Federal regulations require refuge alternatives in underground coal mines to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). Research by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown that heat and humidity buildup is a major concern with refuge alternatives because they have limited ability to dissipate heat, and high internal air temperature and relative humidity (RH) may expose occupants to heat stress. The heat transfer process within and surrounding a refuge alternative is complex and not easily defined, analytically or experimentally. To investigate heat and humidity buildup in refuge alternatives, NIOSH conducted multiple in-mine, 96-h tests on a 10-person tent-type refuge alternative, a 23-person tent-type refuge alternative and a six-person metal-type refuge alternative. The results show that when moisture was introduced to represent perspiration and respiration from miners (wet tests), the average temperature at midheight increased by 10.5 °C (18.9 °F) and the RH approached 88 percent for the 10-person tent-type refuge alternative; the average temperature at midheight increased by 9.4 °C (16.9 °F) and the RH approached 94 percent for the 23-person tent-type refuge alternative; and the average temperature at midheight increased by 7.7 °C (13.9 °F) and the RH approached 95 percent for the sixperson metal-type refuge alternative. For the dry tests, where no moisture was introduced, the average internal temperature increased by 12.6 °C (22.7 °F) for the 10-person tent-type refuge alternative, by 10.3 °C (18.5 °F) for the 23-person tent-type refuge alternative and by 8.4 °C (15.1 °F) for the six-person metal-type refuge alternative. These results may provide refuge alternative manufacturers and mine operators with guidelines and considerations for evaluating temperature profiles for portable refuge alternatives. The information may then be used to make decisions on occupancy ratings and heat mitigation strategies based on the thermal environment in which the refuge alternatives will be installed.

Este trabalho propõe a utilização de simulação computacional adotando princípios de volumes finitos para avaliação do escoamento gasoso em torre de apagamento de coque. Tal simulação poderá fornecer dados, favorecendo a aplicação de tecnologias para redução e controle de emissões de material particulado no período do banho do coque, assim como estimar as variações e características da pluma emitida com a instalação de dispositivos de controle ambiental. Neste estudo são destacados os principais fatores para aplicação da simulação computacional, considerando as condições de contorno; modelos de evaporação; propriedades termofísicas e previsão de saída. Como variáveis de entrada para o modelo apresentado, foram selecionadas a concentração e granulometria do material particulado de vapor d’água da torre de apagamento de coque, através de ensaio de isocinética; as características físico-químicas da água de apagamento; as condições estruturais da torre de apagamento de coque e ciclos de apagamento de coque. Para validar a proposta apresentada, são mostrados resultados baseados nas simulações com o modelo computacional proposto.

The graphite industry as a whole has gone through many changes over the years. Most of the graphite used in major applications since the turn of the century were basic natural or electrode by-product synthetic materials, processed using simple crushing, screening, or grinding techniques. In the mid 1970's new thermal technology was developed which changed the face of the .graphite industry, and opened up a panacea of new products and capabilities. Materials produced through this new technology have helped revolutionize new products and processes in industries including automotive, batteries, fuel cells, electronics, iron, lubricants and steel. This paper outlines the continued improvements in those industries as well as the as well as the outlook for new technology in this rapidly changing area.

Foi implementado um modelo matemático para simular a solidificação de ligas do sistema Nd-Fe-B no processo de lingotamento de tiras. O modelo foi baseado na aplicação da equação de condução de calor unidimensional através da espessura da tira e da parede do rolo refrigerado da máquina de lingotamento. A resolução numérica dessas equações permitiu o cálculo do perfil de fração de sólido através da espessura da tira e dos perfis de temperatura através da tira e da parede do rolo. A temperatura de um ponto da superfície do rolo oscila em ciclos formados pelo contato com o metal líquido (vazamento) e pelo destacamento de um pedaço da tira. A temperatura média do rolo aumenta continuamente, diminuindo a taxa de resfriamento nas tiras. Mesmo no início do processo, os pedaços de tiras que se destacam ainda não estão completamente sólidos.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of ground control considerations associated with floor heave. Factors affecting heave, such as in situ stress, floor characteristics, and mine geometry, are described. Floor-displacement monitoring and data analysis methods are outlined. Finally, floor heave remediation is discussed. The remedial techniques are divided into four categories: mine maintenance, supplemental support, mine structure, and techniques for multiple-seam operations. Other subjects covered in the report include laboratory and in-place testing of floor rocks, U.S. and international case studies, effects of mine layout, determination of excess horizontal pressure, and types of heave failure. The emphasis of this report is on practical considerations; theoretical discussions are kept to a minimum.

Except in a few special cases, it is necessary for solid fuel direct reduction in rotary kilns that iron-bearing materials be charged with a minimum grainsize of approx. 5 mm. For fines not usable in such form, the combination of sintering - as agglomeration step - and direct reduction were investigated. During reduction of sinter in rotary kilns prevail dependencies on sinter quality and varying reaction parameters, owing to the use of different coals, which led to a definite statement as to what quality sinter must have and which coals can be used.

Widespread high-calcium limestones in New Mexico region are low -in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds deleterious for sulfur removal usage. Thick limestones in Mississippian Escabrosa, Lake Valley, and Leadville, Pennsylvanian Madera and Hermosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, Permian Hueco and Capitan, Cretaceous U-Bar, and some Cenozoic travertines are high-calcium units. Significant outcrops are in mountains of southwestern, south-central, central, southeastern and north-central New Mexico, southeastern Arizona, southwestern Colorado, and northwestern Chihuahua. Coal-fired powerplants are mainly in northwestern New Mexico and eastern Arizona, thus transport is mainly by railroad.

O presente trabalho estudou a evolução microestrutural durante o recozimento no campo intercrítico de um aço baixo carbono com micro-adição de nióbio e molibdênio, laminado a frio, destinado a indústria automobilística, sendo este material da classe dos aços bifásicos. Com o intuito de verificar se os parâmetros utilizados no processo de fabricação (laminação a quente e a frio em função de uma determinada composição química) foram definidos de forma eficaz para obtenção da microestrutura esperada para um material “Dual Phase”. Os estudos foram suportados pelas análises da evolução microestrutural durante o processo de recozimento em escala laboratorial e análise dilatométrica, com o objetivo de determinar a faixa de temperatura no tratamento de recozimento em que as melhores propriedades foram atingidas. As caracterizações microestruturais e mecânicas foram avaliadas por Microscopia Óptica, Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) e ensaios de dureza Vickers.

A preocupação com o adequado tratamento de resíduos industriais surgiu com o conceito de desenvolvimento sustentável criado pelo Clube de Roma e contribuiu para o uso racional dos recursos naturais ao longo dos últimos 50 anos. A preocupação com a produção responsável e uso judicioso de recursos naturais priorizou a reciclagem de materiais na agenda das empresas, tornando-se numa atividade de alta relevância, vital para a sustentabilidade econômica e ambiental. Este trabalho aborda os aspectos técnicos, econômicos e ambientais da reciclagem de resíduos contendo zinco através do estudo de caso de reciclagem de resíduos gerados no processo de fabricação de aço em Forno Elétrico, denominado pó de Aciaria Elétrica (PAE). A indústria ainda está em busca de tecnologias para redução da geração e reciclagem desse resíduo. A relevância do estudo está na utilização da Análise Hierárquica de Processo (AHP) para avaliação e seleção da melhor alternativa, entre várias, para tratamento e reciclagem do PAE. Como resultado, demonstrou-se a eficácia do uso da metodologia no empreendimento de reciclagem de resíduos contendo zinco implantado pela Votorantim, em Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais.

LouisiaNa ranks fifth among the oil-producing states. In 1941 the state-wide production was slightly in excess of 118,000,000 bbl. of crude oil and conden-sate—an increase of 15,000,000 bbl. over the total production for the year 1940. During 1941, south Louisiana produced approximately 90,900,000 bbl. of oil, while north Louisiana produced approximately 27,000,000. South Louisiana, therefore, produced about 3¼ times more oil than north Louisiana. During the past year, 574,800,000 M cu. ft. of natural and casinghead gas were produced in Louisiana; thus 1941 gas production exceeded the 1940 production by 104,900,000 M cu. feet. Completion records for the year 1941 show that 1512 wells were completed in or adjoining producing fields. These wells, which were drilled to extend known producing areas or were located within producing areas, are not considered as wildcat wells. Of the total number of field wells drilled, 1152 wells found production; the remaining 360 were junked or dry and abandoned. This means that 76 per cent of the wells drilled were successful. Considering the precarious nature of oil-field development, this percentage of new producing wells is exceedingly satisfactory. Of the total number of field welis com-pleted as producers, approximately 86 wells found new and distinct producing sands. During the past year, 30 new fields were found. Four parishes—namely, Caldwell, Catahoula, Orleans, and Natchitoches— entered the ranks of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state during that period. This brings the total number of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state up to 48. Thus, 75 per cent of the parishes in Louisiana now contain one or more oil and/or gas fields. Although sufficient data are not available to list the addition reserves found in Louisiana during 1941, it is felt that such reserves undoubtedly exceed twice the total production for that year, or at least 200 million barrels. In reserves, therefore, Louisiana ranks third among the various oil-producing states. South Louisiana Although 16 new fields were found in south Louisiana, the outstanding developments in that part of the state were not limited to new discoveries. In fact, most of the increase in reserve in that area has been most consistently accumulated through extensions of known producing sands and through the finding of new sands in already productive fields, especially at depths below the presently producing sands. Since data concerning most of the new extensions and sands are too extensive for discussion here, the more important developments arc briefly outlined below: Abbeville, Vermilion Parish.—Production extended ½ mile to the west. Anse La Butte, St. Martin Parish.—New oil sand discovered at 9400 ft., thus extending production to east flank. West flank defined by dry holes. An experimental investigation has been carried out using a laboratory scale Denver flotation cell. For evaluation of cokeable coal of Alborze Sharghi coal washing plant, the full factorial method was used to statistically design and analyse the experiments. The 2 factorial interaction model were developed for combustible recovery and ash content as response and diesel dosage, conditioning time, feed percent solids and rotor speed as factors. Model validation and residual analysis were con-ducted and results indicated that the fitness, predictability power and residual distributions of models were good. The effect of parameters and interactions were examined and it has been demonstrated that rotor speed, solid percent and interaction between diesel dosage and solid percent were more important terms of all responses. A product with approximately 78% combustible recovery and 10% ash content was obtained at 4000gr/ton diesel fuel oil (high level), 30 sec conditioning time (low level), feed percent solids of 15% (low level) and 800 rpm rotor speed in appropriate condition.

The 10th Annual UCT -US Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel at Gordon's Bay from 31 July to 2 August 1991. The conference was attended by 133 delegates representing a broad cross-section of the mining and metallurgical industry in South Africa. For the first time the Symposium, which was celebrating its 10th anniversary, was extended to two days. A cal for papers was announced and the organizers were inundated with responses resulting in a very full technical programme which consisted of 29 oral and 15 poster presentations.

Estudou-se o efeito do tamanho de grão austenítico nas propriedades de tração do aço Hadfield refinado com Hf. Estas propriedades foram comparadas com as de um aço Hadfield sem refino, ambos com a composição química de acordo com a norma ASTM A128 – grau B2. Adicionalmente, foram usadas técnicas de caracterização macroestrutural, microestrutural e fractográfica. A caracterização macroestrutural mostrou que o aço Hadfield com adição de Hf apresentou tamanho do grão austenítico (600 ?m) aproximadamente cinco vezes menor do que o do aço Hadfield sem refino (3000 ?m). Os resultados do ensaio de tração mostraram um pequeno aumento (~6%) no valor do limite de escoamento com o refino do grão, em acordo com a Equação de Hall-Petch para materiais austeníticos. No entanto, os resultados dos ensaios de tração do aço Hadfield refinado mostraram aumentos que não foram previstos para as propriedades de resistência à tração (~37%), alongamento (~53%) e tenacidade (~88%). O exame fractográfico dos corpos de prova de tração indicou predominância do mecanismo de fratura dúctil para o aço Hadfield sem refino, enquanto que o aço Hadfield refinado apresentou predominância do mecanismo de fratura intergranular dúctil.

The principal ore deposits of Arizona are in the southern, cen-tral, and western portions of the state, which physiographically are part of the Basin and Range province, southwest of the Colo-rado Plateau (Pl. I). The Basin and Range province is characterized by numerous subparallel mountain ranges separated by plains or valleys. Most of these ranges trend northwest to north, parallel to the margin of the Colorado Plateau; but in southeastern Arizona, southern New Mexico, and northeastern Sonora, they trend northward, transverse too the edge of the Plateau. The mountains rise abruptly from plains or valleys, the margins of which in many places are pediments cut on hard rock. Some of the plains form closed basins (bolsons, playas), but most of them are drained. The Basin and Range province in Arizona is divisible into the Mountain Region and the Desert Region4 (Pls. I and II). The Mountain Region forms a belt 60 to 100 miles wide that contains most of the large ore deposits. Its longest range measures about 55 miles, the widest 20 miles, and the highest peak more than 10,000 feet above sea level or 7,000 feet above adjacent valleys or plains. Broad plain-forming valleys are exceptional, but several with maximum widths of 20 to more than 30 miles appear in the southeastern portion. In the Desert Region the mountains are relatively low, narrow, serrated, and steep, with sharply angular profiles. There are a few exceptionally large ranges of which the longest measures nearly 100 miles and the widest 18 miles. The highest peak is some 7,000 feet above sea level, and the maximum local relief amounts to about 5,400 feet. Broad and comparatively low desert plains form 50 to 75 per cent of the area.

During an investigation of the copper-rich portion of the copper-silicon-iron system as part of an extensive research program on P.M.G. alloys, which was begun in 1937 in the research laboratory of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, it became apparent that the binary copper-silicon system below 7 per cent Si needed revision, therefore an investigation was undertaken. Both X-ray methods and microscopic technique were employed. Despite the many investigations that have the clarification of this system as their object, no two successive reports on the system have agreed in placement of the alpha-phase solubility limit, and uncertainty about the secondary phase first to appear has been voiced several times.3,4,5 It was therefore not surprising, when T. Isawa's6 and M. Okamoto's7 works were reported at the time we were finishing up our experimental work, to find essential disagreement between their results and ours. But when C. 5. Smith's latest work on the copper-silicon systema was published just as we were finishing our laboratory report, it was indeed gratifying to find that the latter's diagram and ours checked in all essential features, except the temperature of the peritectoid line above 830" C. Many attempts were made to retain the beta phase during the present investigation, but none was successful. Isawa,6 however, reports that he has been able to obtain X-ray photograms of the beta phase. The structure, he states, is body-centcrcd cubic with a lattiee constant of 2.848 ,&. at 7.2 per cent Si. Okamoto7 and Smith8 both use the designation Kappa for the hexagonal phase, and to avoid confusion this designation will he adhered to in the present paper. Preparation of Samples The alloys were melted in vacuum in a high-frequency furnace. from copper cathodes containing 99.98 per cent Cu, and specially refined silicon supplied by The Electro Metallurgical Co.
