THE milling of silver ores has arrived at a great degree of perfection in the mining districts of our Western States and Territories, and I have thought the record of the practical results obtained at the present time, in a few of the principal districts, would prove of value and interest to many of our members, both at home and abroad. An American silver mill is composed, in descending order from where the ore is dumped, of: 1st. A rock-breaker, usually of the Blake or Alden pattern ; 2d. The battery of stamps, the number of which varies from 5 to 120, generally in batteries of 5 or 10 heads, so arranged that a single battery may stand while the others are running; 3d. The tanks where the crushed ore settles (if it is a wet stamping-mill), or of a drying-floor if the crushing is done dry; 4th. Amalgamating pans ; 5th. Settling pans ; 6th. Agitators or pans in which mercury escaping in the tailings is caught; 7th. Blanket sluices, over which the tailings run, and where mercury and unamalgamated sulphides are saved. A reference to the engravings (see plate), which show one of the latest forms of an 80-stamp silver-mill run by a turbine water-wheel, will show clearly the arrangement of the several parts. THE ONTARIO, UTAH, SILVER MILL. One of the best examples of a silver-mill, and at the same time one of the most successful concerns in the West, is the mill of the Ontario Silver Mining Company, near Salt Lake, in Utah. This mill treats the ore from the Ontario mine, ore which at present is very base, being composed of zinc, lead, and silver sulphides and silver chloride in a quartz gangue. This ore has become baser as the mine attained greater depth, though the vein holds its own, or rather increases, both in thickness and richness. The thermodynamic data necessary for the quantitative treatment of Metal-NH3- H2O systems at elevated temperatures are lacking in the literature. As a result discussions of the chemical basis of high temperature processes, such as leaching and hydrogen reduction, have tended to rely on low temperature thermodynamic data. In this paper a critical review is presented of the available high temperature data for metal ammine formation in aqueous systems, and methods are suggested to enable extrapolation of elevated temperature stability constants from low temperature thermodynamic data. Predictions of the Van't Hoff Lsobar, the simple cation Correspondence Principle (whereby metal ammine complexes are treated as simple cations) and Helgeson's Electrostatic-Nonelectrostatic Model are compared with the available high temperature stability constants for nickel ammines. Up to 80 °C all three estimation methods yield results which are in agreement with experimental data. However, serious deviations occur at higher temperatures; the various models overestimate the stability constants in the order Van't Hoff Isobar > electrostatic-nonelectrostatic model > simple cation Correspondence Principle. Using the experimental nickel data as a basis, a method is presented which permits reasonable estimates to be made of the stability constants of metal ammine complexes for temperatures above 80 °C.

The New Guinea orogen comprises terranes that have accreted to the northern margin of the Australian craton. The history of the accretion of terranes begins earlier (in the Late Cretaceous) and is more complex than has been suggested previously. There was a collision in the central highlands in the Late Paleocene or Early Eocene, and a Finisterre collision that precedes and is distinct from the later (Pliocene) Bismarck volcanic arc collision.

The capital requirements to develop a new mining venture are becoming very large; amounts of the order of US$1,000 million are not now unusual among estimates to bring new mining complexes into production. At the same time prevailing political and economic conditions are making it increasingly difficult to determine whether or not a project is likely to be viable. The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. An outline of the project and the geology of the mineralised structures follows:

Os pós de compósitos foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, os corpos de prova consolidados foram avaliados quanto a densificação a verde e do corpo sinterizado, e os corpos sinterizados foram submetidos a ensaio de compressão a fim de verificar a resistência dos compósitos.

A remoção de inclusões no distribuidor de lingotamento contínuo tem sido intensamente investigada por meio de modelamentos físicos e matemáticos. Recentemente, a injeção de gás no distribuidor tem sido considerada como uma alternativa para aprimorar a remoção de inclusões. Vários trabalhos vêm sendo desenvolvidos analisando os efeitos da injeção de gás e sua interação com as inclusões. No entanto, há espaço para mais investigações envolvendo o efeito da vazão do gás, a localização do sistema de injeção de gás e as dimensões das bolhas na eficiência de remoção de inclusões. No presente trabalho, foi usado um modelo físico construído em uma escala 1:3 de um distribuidor industrial de 40 toneladas de capacidade nominal, para analisar a injeção de gás e seu efeito no padrão do fluxo de fluído e a remoção de inclusões. Os experimentos incluíram a determinação de curvas DTR e visualizações do escoamento. Os efeitos de diferentes vazões e localizações das injeções foram analisados.

Devido a sua alta demanda de produção e padrão de qualidade a indústria automotiva tem utilizado ao longo da história robôs nas mais diversas atividades como montagem, soldagem, pintura e inspeção. No intuito de levar esta realidade para a sala de aula de alunos de Engenharia Mecânica, foi desenvolvido um braço robótico didático, apresentando configuração semelhante à um modelo industrial, a ser utilizado como ferramenta de apoio ao ensino de robótica e outras disciplinas correlacionadas. Para isto, fez-se o uso associado da placa eletrônica Arduino e do software Matlab. Inicialmente foram obtidas as equações de cinemática direta e inversa. Os resultados mostraram que a posição teórica obtida apresentou um comportamento esperado conforme a metodologia adotada e o resultado experimental mostrou pequena variação de posição. Para a cinemática inversa, o tempo de resolução do conjunto de equações foi comparado à resolução do problema através de um método numérico. Com base nos resultados experimentais, foram feitas algumas sugestões de melhoria para o braço robótico didático e considerações relacionadas a acurácia de um robô industrial.

El presente texto señala diversas alternativas y usos para un modelo dirigido a la optimización de una operación minera en el corto plazo, incidiendo en los aspectos mineros, metalúrgicos y comerciales. El modelo se basa en la función de utilidad financiera, cuando ésta es optimizada respecto de las variables que la conforman. Se prescinde de la variable tiempo, al considerarse este modelo como de corto plazo. Se presentan cuatro ejemplos, dos simulados con data real y dos prácticos basados en el resultado actual de la operación. Asimismo, se provee al usuario una visión integral que incluye las actividades principales de la cadena de valor en la minería; unificando criterios y evaluando los efectos de cada una de las decisiones del operador minero en la rentabilidad global de la operación, al variar los principales parámetros en el proceso productivo.

The solubilities of sideronatrite [Na2Fe(OH)(SO4)2?3H20] and ferrinatrite [Na3Fe(SO4),&apos;3H2O] were determined by the Bureau of Mines in the Na2SO4-Fe2O3-H2SO4-H20 system at 25°, 40°, 60°, and 90° C. The solution compositions investigated ranged from Na+-Fe&apos;+ mol ratios of 0.5 to >100 (Na2SO4 saturation) and H+ -SO4 2-mol ratios of 0 to 1. O. The results are presented in the form of contour plots. The solubilities were determined by seeding supersaturated solutions of known composition with the specified solid phase to precipitate a substantial amount of solid. Water was then added in small portions to the solution until the last portion of the solid dissolved. Equilibration times at 25°, 40°, 60°, and 90° C were 2 days, 1 day, 8 to 16 h, and 2 to 4 h, respectively. The accuracy of the solubility data is estimated to be 1 to 2 pet. Low iron solubilities of <0.36 pct Fe2(SO4)&apos;, or 1 g Fe/kg solution, were obtained in solutions containing at least 8 pet Na2SO4 in the absence of H2SO4 or a total of at least 36 to 38 pet Na2SO4 + H2SO4 at high acidity. The filterability and density of sideronatrite and ferrinatrite in comparison with other iron compounds are reported. These compounds are suitable vehicles for iron removal in Na2SO4-rieh solutions. Additional solubility data on the Na2SO4-H2SO4-H20 system were also obtained.

Data from ball mills of a wide range of sizes are analysed using detailed mathematical models and non-linear least squares fitting techniques. This analysis reveals that the relative power inefficiency of large ball mills is due to inefficient grinding of coarse (plus 4 mm) particles in these mills. A qualitative physical hypothesis is proposed to explain this behaviour. The results of the analysis can be used to scale up ball mill behaviour, using the mathematical models and techniques developed. A simpler ball mill scale-up procedure is also proposed, and its limitations stated. Laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine the average size distributions of single particles of different ores after breaKage. These experiments can distinguish between the different ores, and it is hoped to use their results to model and predict the grinding of different ores in ball Mills.

"Electromagnetic based proximity detection systems (PDSs) are utilized on mining machinery to protect workers from being pinned or struck. These systems generate magnetic fields covering the space around a machine, and a miner-wearable component (MWC) detects the field. The PDS determines the distance of miners relative to the machine based on the detected magnetic flux density in the magnetic field. This information is used to establish warning and shutdown zones around the machine. Maintaining a stable magnetic field is essential for system accuracy. However, components used to generate magnetic fields can be influenced by temperature changes. Depending on ventilation conditions and seasonal alternation, a PDS can be subject to significant temperature fluctuation. To better understand and quantify this phenomenon, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed an experimental apparatus to study the influence of temperature on magnetic field generator circuits used in PDSs. Results from the study show that the electric current through a generator can be influenced by both ambient and internal temperatures, modifying the magnetic field that is produced. These findings show that temperature can significantly influence the ability of PDSs, used in underground coal mines, to accurately determine a worker’s position in relation to mining machine. INTRODUCTION Electromagnetic based proximity detection systems have been developed to reduce machine-related accidents in underground coal mines. The first proximity detection systems installed in underground coal mines were developed for continuous mining machines (CMMs). There are five of such proximity detection systems that are approved for use in U.S. mines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2013; Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2015). There are several basic components that interact within an electromagnetic proximity detection system (PDS). A PDS includes two main elements: a set of generators to create magnetic fields around a CMM and a set of magnetic probes to detect the fields. These systems can determine if a miner is located at a safe distance from the machine based on the detected magnetic flux density. Stability of the magnetic fields is essential for system accuracy."

Good mining is central to any approach to value tracking. Good mining occurs where the ore is correctly delineated, measured and fed to the mill. This process is usually referred to as grade control, ore control or quality control. There are now ways to measure the efficiency of this process, such as by using conditional simulation, and a brief synopsis is presented. Resource estimation is the foundation of ore reserve estimation, which should enable useful prediction of the expected metal to be recovered from mining and milling. Significant improvements have resulted from applying new techniques such as the Chain of Mining (CoM) method, which models the mining process. Again, a brief synopsis is presented. Tracking value from the mine through the mill implies a linear sequence of processes that can be modelled. Reality is more complex and there are error components, feedback loops and breaks in the Chain of Value. Modelling the total production process in a number of operations is considered, including the various impacts on producing reconciliations. Procedures are also discussed for handling a number of difficult issues such as: different data supports, stockpiling strategies, blending from multiple ore sources, blast movement and underground ore extraction.

At New Celebration Gold Mine the advent of treating primary sulphide ores resulted in decreased gold recoveries of four to ten per cent. The grind coarsened due to an increase in ore hardness and gold in the residue was found to be associated with pyrite. Finer grinding improved recoveries but was impractical as production rates would have decreased to unacceptable levels. An alternative approach that has proved to be viable combines both gravity separation, to recover the coarse gold bearing sulphides, and then regrinding the concentrate in a tower mill prior to releaching in the cyanide leach circuit. The tailings treatment plant was commissioned in December 1990 and details of the first 18 months&apos; operations are Provided.

The Blast Furnace Campaign lifetime is highly depending on the wear progress of the hearth lining. This progress is monitored in general through single and double thermocouples at the cold side of the lining. This type of monitoring becomes ineffective as soon as heat resistance will be formed in the refractory lining. Paul Wurth’s monitoring system, consisting of MTP-Sensor and Heat Flux Probes, is able to identify such heat resistances to give a true hearth lining wear. Since last year Paul Wurth is also able to install safely those MTP-Sensor and Heat Flux Probes on running blast furnace without salamander tapping, thanks to a newly developed cooled core drilling device. Blast Furnaces that are equipped with Paul Wurth’s monitoring system have optimized their campaign lifetime as they received right information upon the true wear lining such as detection of heat flux transfer failure, detection and monitoring of brittle layer or detection of hot spot.

"Communities near sand mines and processing facilities in Wisconsin have raised concerns regarding possible exposure to ambient respirable (PM4) crystalline silica. Fenceline PM4 (particulate matter captured with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers aerodynamic diameter) crystalline silica concentration data were compiled at Fairmount Santrol Inc., Mathy Construction Inc. and U.S. Silica facilities. The long-term average PM4 crystalline silica concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.45 micrograms/m3 when sample values below the limit of quantification were treated as zeros. All of the long-term average concentrations were less than 20 percent of the Minnesota Department of Health’s and California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s PM4 crystalline silica chronic reference exposure level of 3.0 micrograms/m3. The measured concentrations were consistently within the local background concentration range.Air Control Techniques P.C. compiled the sampling data using Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Partisol 2000i PM2.5 samplers meeting the requirements of 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix L. These samplers were adapted to capture particulate matter with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers. The use of polyvinyl chloride filters allowed for crystalline silica X-ray diffraction analysis by NIOSH Method 7500. The combined use of adjusted PM2.5 filter-based samplers with Method 7500 crystalline silica analyses provided for a highly sensitive limit of quantification of 0.31 micrograms/m3 of PM4 crystalline silica.BackgroundIn 2005, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA, 2005) adopted a 70-year chronic reference exposure level (REL) for PM4 (particulate matter having aerodynamic diameter of 4 micrometers or less) crystalline silica. The REL was extrapolated from occupational hygiene epidemiological studies, essentially all of which were based on in-plant PM4 crystalline silica measurements. No well-established ambient sampling technique for PM4 crystalline silica was available at the time that OEHHA adopted its REL. The personal samplers used for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 0600 in-plant sampling of employee exposure were designed for concentrations higher than ambient levels. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of PM4 crystalline silica on NIOSH 0600 filters was too high for the effective sampling of ambient air."
