Waste clay ponds are a necessary part of phosphate rock beneficiation. They are large, averaging 2.6 km2 (1 sq mile). They are unsightly in that they protrude 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above natural grade. Stabilization and reclamation is slow and they have had a history of catastrophic failure. Florida has never published a specific rule regarding the configuration or height of these ponds. But it has enforced several policies along these lines. The phosphate industry has been forced to make major monetary decisions that affect mine economics for decades. The Florida Bureau of Mine Reclamation believes that the direction of regulation has been solidified but changes are still anticipated. Phosphate rock has been mined in Florida since 1890 (Fig. 1). Three notable technological changes occurred in the industry that led to major shifts in mining technique and volume. By about 1915, hydraulic mining had been replaced by centralized washers. Hydraulic mines usually started at an outcrop in or adjacent to a stream of the pebble zone. Water was pumped out of the stream through high-pressure monitors and sand and clay were washed away from the pebble. Mobile grizzlies and screens were used in conjunction with animal and human labor to concentrate the pebble and haul it away. Populations were sparse and the clays washed into the stream were considered an acceptable price for the commerce. The clays were not voluminous because the pebble zone typically contained relatively small amounts of them. Machines largely replaced animals by 1910 and provided greater efficiency of production. Centralized washers replaced mobile trommels. They allowed greater ease of access to shipping routes by rail. Some clays were placed in mine cuts from 1915 to 1930. Some were dammed off to increase the capacity of a given site. Some of these also failed, leading to clay plumes that were visible all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. By concentrating the waste clays (slimes) in impoundments, the solids concentration had increased, making plumes persistent for long distances. There were complaints. But there was no litigation against the companies during that time. In 1930, flotation technology allowed the recovery of the phosphate from deeper zones. This was because the "concentrate" size phosphate rock was in the sand-size range and could not be screened out. Centralized beneficiation plants grew into a three-step process - washing and screening, feed preparation and flotation (Fig. 2). Reagent storage, safety and the flotation cell complex made the plants into large capital installations. Larger draglines were required to dig deeper into the matrix. These had dramatically larger production capacities, which were then figured into the overall material balance for a given plant. The number of operators shrank and the production per operator grew. Larger areas were being bermed off for waste clay storage. An economic incentive became apparent for storing as much waste clay as possible in each settling area. At the same time, the population was steadily growing and more eyes were watching the activities of the phosphate mines. The vapor pressure of indium has been measured by the torque-effusion technique, as a function of temperature between 1102o and 1422oK. For liquid indium, the vapor pressure (in atmospheres) can be represented by the equation -R In P = 5.782 x104/T - 25.29from 1000o to 1422oK. Extrapolation yields a calculated normal boiling point of 2329°K and a heat of vaporization at 298 oK of 58.09 kcal per mole by the third-law method and of 58.39 kcal per mole by the second-law method. Calculations indicate that the free-energy functions of Hultgren are to be preferred to those of Guruich. BECAUSE of the potential uses of liquid metals, it is important that convenient experimental methods be developed which will lead to a sufficient body of thermodynamic data so that reasonable estimates of properties of liquid metals can be made. Indium is particularly well-suited to investigation, since it remains liquid over a long temperature interval, it alloys readily, suitable containers for it are easily procured, and relatively few investigations of its thermodynamic properties in the region above 1000°K have been made. PREVIOUS RESEARCH The first determination of the vapor pressure of indium was made by Anderson,' using the Knudsen method and silica-lines stainless-steel cells. Kohlmeyer and spandau2 determined the normal boiling point, and a mass-spectroscopic investigation has been made by Lyubimov and Lyubitov.3 (Unfortunately, only an equation representing the data of the latter investigators has been available to us.) Hultgren et al.4 and Gurvich5 have published discordant tables of the free-energy functions for indium. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The torsion-effusion principle has been described amply in the literature.8,7 With this method, one observes the angular deflection induced by effusion of vapor from a multihole effusion cell which is suspended from a filament producing a small rotational restoring force. The pressure within the effusion cell can be computed from the relation ziaifiai where k is the torsion constant of the filament, 6 is the observed angular deflection, and ai, fi, and qi are the area, force factor, and moment arm of the ith effusion orifice. The force factor f is analogous to the Clausing factor,' and corrects for the reduction in effusive force attributable to the finite geometry of the effusion orifice. Schultz and Searcy' have tabulated the force factors for various tube geometries. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The physical arrangement employed in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The furnace elements are six Globar heat rods with 15-in. hot zones. Temperature is maintained to * 1°K by a Beck mechanism driving two 26-amp Powerstats in parallel. A Pt (Pt, Rh 10 pct) thermocouple serves as the sensing element. Four inner tubes act as vibration isolators; the air pressure required for maximum isolation was determined empirically, and is maintained by a solenoid valve. The tungsten fiber, 9 by 0.002 in., is joined to an 0.008-in. tungsten wire or graphite rod via a machined lightweight chuck.

As a result of a field examination made during the Bureau of Mines intensive manganese program, three lots of ore were procured from the famous old Paymaster District, 7 miles from Midway Wells, Imperial County, Calif. This district is an old producer and shipped approximately 10,000 tons of 45-percent manganese ore during World War I. A 2-ton lot of ore was taken of a Bureau engineer from the exposure of a small fissure vein in conglomerate on the Turtle Group of claims; 1 mile east of the Pacific Coast Manganese Corp. claims. The vein material consisted of manganese oxides, calcite, and quartz in fairly coarse association.

Certain influences of oxygen on iron have been known for many years and it has always been considered one of the worst enemies of the iron and steel founders. Nobody had a good word for it, hence little was done to make use of this oxygen. In all the fields of foundry practice, the desideratum was "melt without oxidation of the metal." In the consideration of the influence of oxygen on cast iron, we must not confuse this condition with oxidized iron caused by poor melting conditions, due to a high bed, heavy charges, low coke ratio, excessive melting rate, high blast, or poor charging. It is admitted that oxygen absorbed by iron melted under these conditions has a deleterious effect on the properties of the iron. The writer has had experience both in the melting under such poor conditions and in remedying these bad conditions and considers the product far inferior to iron melted under normal conditions. As stated by Dr. Richard Moldenke,l such iron has a higher melting point and high combined carbon, is sluggish, and contains slags and oxides in solution in the liquid, causing slag inclusions and gas occlusions, 'thus producing defective castings. This oxidized condition cannot be counteracted or removed by any of the known deoxidizers; it can be remedied only by proper melting conditions. Such iron is redly burned, whereas the iron considered in this paper was melted under normal conditions with moderate blast, correct bed height, light charges of iron, and low coke consumption and is not in this category at all. In 1914, the late J. E. Johnson, Jr., startled the metallurgists of the . world when he published his results on the advantages of oxygen on cast iron.2 His work is so convincing and so logical, in spite of the common and well-established notions on the subject, that nobody has been able to refute a single argument. Such an eminent authority on iron and steel metallurgy as Prof. H. M. Howe has accepted the work in all its details in his latest book.3 The work of J. E. Johnson, Jr., has revolutionized the metallurgy of cast iron and it seems apparent that all future work must include an oxygen determination just as we include silicon, sul-

Com a crescente utilização de aços inoxidáveis duplex na indústria petroquímica, química, de celulose e entre outras, motivada em grande parte pelas propriedades mecânicas e de resistência à corrosão apresentadas por estes materiais. Por se tratar de um material com altos teores de elementos de liga e ser composto por duas fases, ferrita e austenita, se faz necessário grandes cuidados na sua soldagem e um aprimoramento dos conhecimentos deste material quando submetido a este processo. Para tal, o presente trabalho denota um estudo da microestrutura de um aço inoxidável duplex após a sua soldagem pelo processo MIG pulsado, sendo aplicada uma energia durante a soldagem de 1,0kJ e adotada uma temperatura entre os passes de soldagem de 150oC. Também foram analisados os percentuais de ferrita e austenita, foi efetuada a contagem de fases do metal base e também da zona afetada pelo calor (ZAC). Foram encontrados na ZAC além da fase austenita secundária, uma fase intermetálica que possivelmente se trata de nitretos de cromo. Apesar do metal base estar com uma proporção ferrita/austenita aproximadamente igual, na ZAC houve um desbalanceamento entre as fases, onde a predominância foi de grãos de ferrita.

In the foreword by C. K. Leith, Chairman of The Mineral Inquiry, it is pointed out that the ordinary mineral production tables do not show the commercial control, and that some knowledge of the situation is desirable as a background for the consideration of problems involving mineral raw materials. The report consists principally of tables, accompanied by a brief text, giving the production and an analysis of the control, according to nationality, of 18 minerals: aluminum, chromite, copper, iron and steel, lead, manganese ore, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, nitrates, petroleum, potash, silver, sulfur, tin, tungsten, vanadium, and zinc. For the most part, the production figures for 1929 and the latest figures for reserves have been used. When feasible, the control has been shown at the various stages of production; mining, smelting and refining. American capital was dominant in the production of 10 mineral commodities, including six of the most important; British capital, in four instances; while Spanish, German, Chilean or Chinese interests cach led in the control of one. British, French, German, and Dutch capital occupied second place in the control of most of the important minerals. Between two-thirds and three-fourths of the world's mincral production is controlled by British and American capital.

O processo que envolve soluções aquosas para remoção do metal de valor de uma grande massa de ganga, com um beneficiamento mínimo, é denominado Lixiviação. A especificidade do agente lixiviante empregado define a capacidade de tratar soluções com baixos teores do metal de interesse e o sucesso do processo. A lama da aciaria, recolhida no sistema de limpeza dos gases oriundos do convertedor LD, e a lama da eletrogalvanização, gerada após a neutralização da solução de zinco contaminada com ferro, são resíduos sólidos gerados nas usinas siderúrgicas com potencial de serem reutilizados ou reciclados. A fim de se remover o óxido de zinco presente nas lamas, amostras foram coletadas e preparadas para sofrerem o processo de lixiviação em escala laboratorial usando soluções de hidróxido de sódio (NaOH) e ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4). Os resultados obtidos nas análises mostraram que é possível remover óxido de zinco através da lixiviação das lamas.

In a paper contributed by W. A. Goodyear, M.E., on "Water Gas as Fuel," read at the Boston Meeting, February, 1883,* the following statenlent was made: "The latest experiments on a scale of some magnitude in our citier, in the way of heating buildings and furnishing power for manufacturing purposes, have been by the distribution of high-presslire steam through pipes laid in the streets. Hilt these experiments (1) have not hitherto been very successful; and when we consider the high cost and (2) the great and unavoidable loss of heat and power, which always accompany the conveyance of high-pressnre steam to any considerable distance in pipes, to say nothing of (3) certain practical difficulties in the management of the pipes themselves, (4) it is evident that all such methods must eventually disappear before a system which can furnish a cheap gas of great heating power, easily distributed wherever wanted, without requiring pipes to stand pressures of 50 to 75 pounds per square inch, and (5) without keeping the whole mass of ground in the streets through which it passes hot, gratis, for a distance of ten or fifteen feet, in all directions around the pipes!' For the purpose of controverting Mr. Goodyear's statements in regard to steam-distribution in cities, I hare numbered the points made in his indictment, my principal object being, not a professional discussion of the technical and theoretical merits of steam vs. watergas, but a simple statement of facts, in regard to the present state of the street system of steam distribntion. Taking Mr. Goodyear's points in their order: 1. Concerning what he terms " These experiments," saying that they " have not hitherto been very successful," I propose to show, that the problem of stearn-distribution has passed beyond the experimental stage, and that its practical solution is highly successful. Os custos com reparos e substituições de peças, que são submetidas a trabalhos que proporcionam desgastes dos mesmos significam elevadíssimos gastos para as empresas. Os testes de campo geralmente são caros, além de necessitarem de um longo tempo para serem completados. A partir do momento que se notou a necessidade do desenvolvimento de materiais com maiores resistências ao desgaste começou a ser feitas várias pesquisas na área de desgaste abrasivo. De acordo com trabalhos realizados, pode-se concluir que existe uma grande variedade de parâmetros que influenciam os mecanismos de desgaste de maneira geral. Neste trabalho estudou-se o coeficiente de atrito bem como a resistência ao desgaste por abrasão em dois tipos de materiais, sendo uma amostra com revestimento de níquel e uma amostra revestida com liga binária de níquel com 7,3% de cobalto. O enfoque principal foi centrado na taxa de desgaste por abrasão, caracterizado pelo atrito de partículas entre dois corpos em contato. Como material abrasivo foi utilizado uma suspensão de diamante com diferentes granulometrias e foram aplicadas cargas diferentes, totalizando oito ensaios. Nestes, foi possível observar que maiores desgastes estão diretamente relacionados com material de maior dureza, abrasivo de maior granulometria e menor carga aplicada.

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A leaches secondary copper sulfides. In recent years, the mine has introduced innovations that have improved the management of mineral crushing, agglomeration, curing, and leaching. The crushing plant, for example, uses the concepts of degree of balance and percentage of time in an operationally balanced state which, displayed in real time, facilitate more intensive and uniform utilization of the crushers. High agglomerate quality is ensured with the correct dose of moisture, which is adjusted to the changing characteristics of the mineral through the use of electrical conductivity measurements. The amount of acid used for curing the agglomerate is also adjusted by using quality control information. Finally, the stockpile irrigation regime is managed using the criteria established by the "Lixiviant Request Rate", which optimizes the addition of leaching solution, creating such benefits as faster recovery, and reduced acid and energy consumption.

The research, development and testing of a Blast Control Plug (U.S. Pat. #4,754,705) funded by the U.S. Department of Energy is described. The plug's function is to improve blasting efficiency through the enhancement of stemming effectiveness and thereby reduce drilling and blasting costs. The plug comprises a solid unit placed in the blast hole within the stemming column above the explosive. It is designed for use with back filled drill cuttings or any other suitable material The research and development program comprised the testing of the plug in small diameter holes in competent rock for both bench and crater blasting configurations and full scale field trials in multiple hole and row blasts using blast holes of from 76 to 387 mm in diameter. Test measurements included stemming displacement and velocity, face movement and extent, peak air over pressure and ground surface peak particle velocity. Data acquisition equipment included a Spin Physics SP2000 high speed video motion analysis system, and acoustic and seismic monitoring units. Substantial reductions in stemming ejection velocity or ejection elimination were achieved whilst reducing stemming length by up to 35% over conventional practice. Peak air blast pressures were also reduced by between 8 and 25 dB. A strong inverse relationship between rock face movement and stemming ejection velocity was found. The implications of the importance of stemming effectiveness in blasting and computer blast simulation is also addressed.

A utilização do wBN como ferramenta de usinagem pode eliminar a necessidade de retífica das peças. Portanto, neste trabalho, os experimentos realizados tiveram por objetivo o estudo e caracterização de compósitos à base de wBN, diboreto de titânio (TiB2) e alumínio (Al) para obtenção de pastilhas para usinagem. A composição utilizada para a investigação utilizou 70% de wBN. Os compósitos foram obtidos sob altas pressões e altas temperaturas via aplicação cíclica . As patilhas atingiram aproximadamente 4,5 mm de diâmetro, e altura de 4,0 mm. As amostras foram caracterizadas por ensaio de dureza Vickers, microscopia eletrônica de varredura, microscopia confocal e densidade. De forma geral, os melhores resultados foram para amostras com ciclos de um minuto cada, para os três ciclos, sendo pouco dependente do valor da pressão aplicada. Foi observada dureza maior que 17GPa, baixa porosidade e um valor de densidade aparente muito próxima à teórica.

Electronic detonators have been in commercial use for a decade, with an excellent safety record. This paper lists known incidents involving electronic detonators. Typical standards required by regulatory bodies for static electricity and electromagnetic fields are reviewed. The performance of some detonators is compared to these standards; in general the minimum standards are easily exceeded. The general resistance of electronic detonators to extraneous electrical energy that can be derived from the body of test results is compared to danger levels for exposure of humans to these energies; it is shown that electronic detonators can safely tolerate higher electrical energies than people can. This comparison includes comparable data for electric detonators, which are shown to be more vulnerable to extraneous electrical energy than people are. Electronic detonators also bring significant safety benefits in blasting due to their testability, two-way communications, reliability, programmability and precision. The links between these attributes and enhanced safety are discussed with examples from actual blasting. Although electronic detonators are usually more vulnerable to extraneous electricity than non-electric initiation systems, the paper shows that the net safety benefit in handling and blasting is in favor of electronic detonators, which are the safest initiation system that has ever been offered to the mining industry.

Materiais poliméricos sofrem danos estruturais ao serem submetidos à radiação X. Estes danos podem causar reticulação, quebra de ligações entre outros danos. Em diversos serviços de radiodiagnostico e de radioterapia é utilizado placa de etileno vinil acetato, EVA, para auxiliar o posicionamento de pacientes crianças ate 2 anos em radiografias de tórax. O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar se este material é adequado para ser utilizado nestes serviços. Para tanto, amostras do material foram submetidas a dose de 25 kGy e avaliados por espectrometria de infra vermelho com transformada de Fourier, e a superfície por medidas de rugosidade e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados indicam que o material apresenta degradação com dose de 5 kGy e aumento da rugosidade.

Although this is a symposium on "The Occurrence, Preparation and Use of Australian Black Coal", I do not think that, in these days, any of the main energy resources can be considered only in terms of country of origin or only by itself in isolation from other energy resources. Accordingly, I propose to comment on solid fuels generally in the world energy scene, and make some brief references to Australian solid fuels, and to some other matters in the latter part of this paper. In this address I am drawing heavily on the 1974 survey of energy resources published just recently by the World Energy Conference. I do this for a number of reasons. Firstly, the survey is the latest and most comprehensive publication of its kind; secondly, it is the result of several years' work by a panel of eminent people, from all the energy industries and from some 16 widely spread countries; thirdly, substantial assistance was given by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in its compilation; and, finally, to let all know of the existence of the book, as I believe it to be a source document for all those interested in world energy resources. The United Nations "J" series of statistical papers provide important information on the annual production and consumption of and trade in the various forms of energy. In their respective areas, these two publications are primary information sources. Our present sources of energy throughout the world are fossil fuel deposits (coal, oil, gas), nuclear materials, water, geothermal, solar and tidal - but we are at present heavily dependent upon the natural stores of non-renewable fossil energy resources. Fig. 1 shows the changing use of energy resources in the present century. A comparison between 1900 and 1973 shows clearly the shift which has taken place.

As propriedades mecânicas e custo-benefício dos ADIs (ferros fundidos nodulares austemperados) tem motivado diversas pesquisas acadêmicas com o intuito de compreender a influência da sua microestrutura em suas propriedades. Buscando consolidar os resultados de estudos anteriores, no presente trabalho foram analisados os efeitos das características (tamanho e posição) dos nódulos de grafita na propagação de trinca submetida a um dado carregamento, utilizando o método dos elementos finitos (MEF) associado à técnica de re-meshing para propagação de trinca, com incremento de comprimento de trinca fixo, tendo como base de estudo dois tipos distintos de ADI. Dentre as principais conclusões, foi observado que nódulos de maior diâmetro apresentam maior influência sobre os fatores intensidade de tensão, sendo este fator um possível motivo para a melhor resistência em fadiga do material ADI 2 (menor tamanho de nódulo) em relação ao ADI1, conforme observado em estudos experimentais anteriores.

"Drilled shafts are being used as foundation support for parabolic solar troughs at the Genesis Solar Project being constructed near Blythe, California. Three types of drilled shaft foundations are required for the project. At project build-out, there will be a total of 23,008 drilled shafts installed at the site. Preliminary designs for the axial and lateral capacity of the drilled piers were based on conventional geotechnical engineering methodologies and soil-structure interaction. The drilled shafts and subsurface conditions were modeled through the use of the computer program LPILE v6.0.Conducting lateral load testing of drilled shafts was considered appropriate to confirm or modify the geotechnical parameters used in the preliminary design. The lateral load testing program was conducted to provide site-specific test data that would allow the design engineers (both geotechnical and structural) to predict the actual performance and adequacy of the proposed drilled shaft foundations and improve the efficiency and hopefully reduce project costs.The lateral load testing was conducted within two solar fields at the site. Three pairs of drilled shaft foundations were installed in each field, instrumented, and laterally loaded to determine load-deflection response. A value-engineered option, proposed by one of the drilled shaft contractors, was also load tested. The results of the load-deflection data obtained in the field was used to modify the soil modeling used in the original L-PILE analyses and adjust the production drilled shaft lengths.Based on the results of the lateral load testing, the in-situ moduli of the subsurface soils were significantly increased over that assumed in the preliminary analyses. Based on the final soil-structure interaction analyses, the preliminary drilled shaft lengths were reduced by 2 to 2-1/2 feet. This resulted in an overall reduction of 55,654 feet of drilled shaft construction on the entire project, a savings of approximately 16.5% over the preliminary"

Electrowinning is the final step in the hydrometallurgical production of high purity copper, involving the passage of electric current through an electrolyte and consequent plating of solid copper to form cathode sheets. Key electrowinning performance indicators are the current efficiency, specific energy consumption, yield, and quality of the metal. The high energy demand and associated cost mean that determination of performance indicators is critical during operation, but ‘online’ measurement is impractical due to the nature of the measurements and corrosive environment brought about by acid mist. This research considered the development of a predictive electrowinning model as a shift towards a pre-emptive approach to attaining plant performance data. A steady-state model was created from input variables available in the industry, using a first-principles approach combining mass balances, electrochemical and thermodynamic equations, and property correlations. A circuit diagram equivalent of an electrowinning cell, containing multiple pairs of electrodes, was used as the backbone of the model. The kinetics of each electrochemical reaction were modelled including iron as a major impurity. Losses in current efficiency due to ineffective electrode contact, short circuits, and stray currents were also incorporated. The model was used to predict the current efficiencies for tests performed at varying conditions in a bench-scale electrowinning cell; the average absolute error between the measured and predicted current efficiencies was 3.2%. The model requires a unique parameter fitting approach for each industrial operation; if parameters are customised for specific plants, the model will be a useful tool to predict performance and can aid the development of effective process control systems in copper electrowinning tank houses.
