Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

SXFIT is the latest in a series of programs developed in our group to model solvent extraction systems of increasing complexity. SXFIT permits the user complete freedom to define the constituents from which the composition of each phase is to be specified in the data and from which all species of a model for a system are assumed to be formed. Activity coefficients in the nonaqueous and aqueous phases, water activity, apparent molar volumes of aqueous species, and solution density needed for the conversion of concentration from the molarity to the molarity scale are all taken into account by the program. Several extraction systems relevant to nuclear-waste treatment were modeled successfully using this program. As an example, the cesium extraction efficiency of the CSSX process chosen by the USDOE for cesium removal from high-level waste stored at the Savannah River Site can be predicted correctly for varying feed composition.

Pelletizing of iron ore fines is an important process used to produce high quality of raw materials for the subsequent reduction processes in the ironmaking industries. The process involves the production of green pellets and subsequent induration on a traveling grate furnace to promote inner partial melt and agglomeration which confer physical and metallurgical proprieties appropriated to the subsequent reduction processes. The pellets are produced with addition of charcoal to improve efficiency in the reduction processes. The lignin coal from sugarcane straw is an alternative source to replace the charcoal or coke in the self reduction of pellets. This work focused on the influence of biomass on the chemical kinetics parameters inner agglomerate pellet structure under industrial process conditions of the travelling grate furnace due hot gas flows within the pellets.

We have developed a high-performance, flexible scheme for interpolating multi-dimensional data. The technique can reproduce exactly the results obtained, for example, from Ordinary Kriging and related techniques in 3D, or from Thin-Plate Splines (Briggs' minimum-cuwature algorithm) in 2D. Moreover, com- pared to traditional implementations of these algorithms, our method enjoys large computational-cost savings. The new approach produces an interpolation that obeys a Partial Differential Equation (PDE). The PDE may arise from physically based arguments, but its form can vary widely. It might be specified only implicitly (as through a Model Variogram), or be nonlinear (although a performance penalty could then apply). While a formal equivalence between Kriging and Splines has been known for some time (Matheron, 1980), the present derivation, from radial basis functions, further illuminates this connection. Thus, for example, we can make explicit the PDEs that underlie some of the Model Variograms most often used in Geostatistics. Besides its practical utility, the work thereby ac- quires a theoretical interest.

The redesign and reinforcement of a highwall located adjacent to a $10,000,000 shopping center, destabilized by active subsidence, was conducted after an extensive geotechnical investigation. The highwall was excavated in a hillside where a coal seam had been retreat mined and augered. Engineering geological mapping, determination of the properties and behavior of the intact rock, fractured rock, and urethane grout material, and soil were required to characterize the highwall and conduct a stability analysis. Remedial measures included re-excavating portions of the highwall to reduce the slope angle, and pressure grouting of the immediate roof.

Chemical and physical properties of surface soils and overburden materials must be evaluated prior to strip mining activities. This information can be used to assess whether subsurface overburden can be equal in quality to the existing surface soils, especially when these soils are classed as prime farm lands. In Texas, materials from the Carrizo, Calvert Bluff, Simsboro, and Hooper Formations overlie the lignite. The Carrizo Formation consists of thick clean sands with poor water and nutrient retention capabilities. These materials are least suited for placement of the surface of reclaimed land. The oxidized, medium textured overburden from the Calvert Bluff and Simsboro Formations possess adequate water and nutrient properties and are better suited for sustained plant growth. Non-oxidized Calvert Bluff and Hooper sediments generally have acceptable properties for reclamation. However, caution must be exercised in vegetating these materials since they may contain acid forming sulfide minerals.

The exploration of the seafloor regarding the abundances of poly-metallic nodules has received growing attention recently. Image-based exploration using cameraequipped deep-sea observation systems has been introduced successfully to increase spatial resolution in the exploration process but the evaluation and interpretation of the huge amount of image data creates a serious bottleneck. In this paper we present a new software solution to the problem of automatic detection and segmentation of poly-metallic nodules in underwater images, which is not only accurate but so fast that real time image analysis is definitely in reach. Thus, an application on an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) seems possible in the near future.

Invariably when a new plant is cammissioned operations personnel on takeover look at ways and means of reducing certain restrictions and improving process conditions. These improvements are generally of a mechanical/engineering nature with minor metallurgical alterations to fine tune and maximise recovery. Most operations are continually reviewing and updating existing equipment and equipment spares to gain the maximum performance hereby reducing operating costs. Design of current carbon-in-pulp/carbon- in-leach (CIP/CIL) plants has evolved to such a high degree that many of the medium sized plants can have a "blue printed" design from one to the next if the same engineering designer is used.

The Manufacturer's Viewpoint A prominent manufacturer of mining 'machinery not long ago expressed himself as being confident that he was securing the best kind of publicity for his product through the advertising pages of the monthly Bulletin of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Such an expression coming from such a man is highly gratifying; yet it is justifiable when the high quality of reader and subscriber is taken into consideration. In fact, the majority of those using our advertising pages feel the same. It is to be regretted, of course, that others catering to our field do not realize the means at their disposal for presenting the points of interest of their product to the mining man. The question has been asked, " Do your members read their Bulletin?" They not only read the editorial pages, but they "admit being up-to-date enough to peruse the advertising section to "see what is new." The next question the prospective advertiser asks is, " Will the Bulletin bring inquiries?" The answer to this question holds good for any publication having as subscribers those who have purchasing or recommending power-yes, if the article advertised is not a stock one, that has been before the public for any length of time. To secure inquiries on, say, a standard centrifugal pump or any other standard product, the features of which are well known, is a most difficult proposition. Yet, of course, some inquiries are secured, but mostly from those having use for the catalogue or trade literature for reference purposes. It is safe to say that the traceable returns from advertising in trade publications hardly, if at all, pay for the advertising. The real returns are intangible, and result from the constant publicity, and keeping ?everlastingly at it." Who can say what subconscious effect is taking place when an advertisement is "glanced at," to say nothing of the effect produced when the copy is attractive and interests the reader. Time after time it has been proved that sales have been secured as a result of an advertisement, yet no inquiry had been made directly traceable to advertising.

More than a quarter of a century has passed since the introduction of the machine known as the Blake crusher, the invention of Eli W. Blake, of New Haven, Conn. Although originally designed for breaking stone for road-metal, its importance for crushing ores of the precious metals, and those of iron, copper, and zinc, as well as emery, phosphates, plaster, etc., mas soon recognized, and for many years its use has been world-wide, and its construction so well known that no special description of it is deemed necessary. Following its introduction, many different machines for the same purpose, containing the same essential features of upright convergent jaws, one of which is movable with respect to the other, hut having some slight modification of such movement (generally a rubbing motion) or of the non-essential method of imparting motion to one or both of the jaws, have been offered to the public for sale and use, but have, as a rule, in time disappeared from the market. If we seek for the reason of the success of the Blake crusher, aside from its simplicity of construction, we shall find it in the adherence to the principle of crushing by simple pressure and careful avoidance of attrition. In this lies the economy of power and of wearingsurfaces. To reduce any hard and brittle material to a fine powder by many different methods—by attrition, impact, or percussion—is a comparatively easy matter; but to accomplish this by the employment of either of the above-mentioned principles involves such a consumption of wearing-surface? (generally iron) or of power, that the numerous devices that have hitherto been presented to the public as solutions of the problem of fine crushing have proved utter and complete failures when tested with reference to the power employed and the wear of iron in doing their work.. From the very early stages of a mining project, there is a requirement to predict the chemistry of potential drainages from various waste storage facilities. However, using relative masses to scale chemical loads measured by laboratory kinetic tests, such as humidity cells, to a full-scale mine waste facility will lead to concentration predictions that are unrealistically high for many dissolved constituents. Scaling factors developed by various procedures indicate that laboratory rates may range anywhere from two to eight times (Drever and Clow, 1995) to 100 to 1000 times faster than field rates (Malmstrom et al, 2000; Smith and Beckie, 2003; Ritchie, 1994). This contribution will use previous works and secondary data to discuss the significance of scale in water quality predictions. It will also present primary experimental geochemical and numerical data from a column leaching study on coal spoils to discuss potential applications of mesoscale leaching tests in bridging the gap between bench-top tests and field scale trials.

"The Cape Breton Development Corporation is a federal Crown corporation which was formed in 1968. Initially, the Corporation had two divisions - the Industrial Development Division, whose purpose was to stimulate Cape Breton Island's economy, and the Coal Division with a mandate to phase out the operating coal mines. However, that strategy changed in the early 1970s with the Middle East oil crisis. As a result of that crisis, Nova Scotia Power Corporation adopted an ""off oil"" policy. Today, approximately 700/0 of Nova Scotia power needs are met by generation of electricity from coal. Therefore, since the early 1970s, emphasis has been on the rehabilitation of the Cape Breton coal mining business with the opening of three new mines.Today, Devco is solely a coal mining company which employs 3300 people.Physical DescriptionThe mines operate in the Sydney coal field which is located on the eastern tip of Cape Breton. The Corporation leases the deposit from the province of Nova Scotia and its leases cover all coal from the outcrop to the 4000 ft depth. The seams outcrop along the shoreline and dip beneath the ocean floor at dips varying between 5% and 100%.There are eleven seams, of which three - the Harbour, Phalen, and Hub - have been extensively mined."

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies are designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena. This report is the fourth of a series4/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the evaluation of the constant pressure flame temperatures of methane-air, propane-air, and ethylene-air mixtures for a range of pressures.

The Bureau of Mines used a diphenyl ether calorimeter to determine the heat contents of natural and synthetic blast-furnace slags. For solid slags, enthalpy (HT-H298) at 1,448° to 1,680° K ranged from 282.1 to 348.5 cal/g (±3 percent); liquid slag values were 400.1 to 514 cal/g (±3 percent) in the temperature range between 1,626° and 1,890° K. Experimental results for liquid slags were 14.3 to 16.2 percent higher than the enthalpies calculated from thermodynamic tables; values for solid slags ranged from 5.3 percent lower to 3.9 percent higher than calculated values. Experimental results for liquid synthetic slags ranged from 14.9 to 24.3 percent higher than the calculated enthalpies; values for solid synthetic slags were from 1.0 to 3.4 percent higher.

This report describes an accident, which took place in the Chemical Corrosion Laboratory at the College Park, Md., Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The accident occurred while Walter L. Acherman, chemist, was performing a routine manipulation during a corrosion experiment involving commercially pure titanium and red-fuming nitric acid. There was a sudden and very violent reaction, and a large quantity of acid was thrown in the face and over the body of Acherman, causing serious injury. L. B. Golden, chief of the Chemical Corrosion Section, was exposed to nitric acid fumes during the ensuing rescue and first-aid operations and died on January 25, 1954. According to the medical report, the direct cause of Mr. Golden's death was pulmonary edema and confluent bronchopneumonia; the contributary cause, was inhalation of fumes from red fuming nitric acid. The following employees of the College Park Station contributed to this report by supplying information on the accident and assisted in the rescue operation: L. B. De acuerdo al estudio realizado se encontró que la industria del plomo y zinc inicialmente ha crecido por los costos bajos, para luego ascender en aras de la supervivencia y desarrollo minero. Así también es necesario que la Sociedad de Minería y Petróleo establezca una comisión que fije códigos de cuenta como normas contables para llevar contabilidades uniformes, como la creación de un programa de capacitación al personal de forma integral para que conozcan la verdad sobre la industria y los problemas que conlleva la misma, entre otras medidas, que ayuden al crecimiento y producción minero.

The nature and orientation of joints in rock strata affect the damage pattern under explosive loading. Most of the limestone deposits in India are found with severity of joints. Categorically, these joints may have variable orientations such as dipping out of the blast face, inside the face, horizontally or having strike parallel to the face. The damage pattern under the varying category of orientation will be different. Accordingly, a numerical model in Ansys-Explicit Dynamics was prepared to compare the damages of rock mass under different joint orientations. The physical nature of a joint reflects frictional and stiffness behaviour. Accordingly, the damages have been compared under bonded and frictional nature of joints. The output damage pattern from the model has been validated on the basis of blastability index proposed by Lilly. Different limestone mines in India show different nature of jointing in their rock strata. Accordingly, the blasting outputs from three different limestone mines, viz. Rawan limestone mine, Sagmania and Birhauli limestone mine and Injepalli limestone mine, have been compared along with their blast design parameters and the nature of joint. The comparative results show that the closely spaced horizontal joints support maximum in burden movement and rock fragmentation due to blast.
