Since 1978, the titanium metals industry, throughout the non-socialist world, has experienced a period of growth and prosperity unparalleled since the late 1950s. Sponge producers, melters and mill product manufacturers have operated at capacity, record shipments have been attained, new producers have entered the industry and established producers have implemented expansion plans. However, there is now mounting evidence that the underlying elements which generated this vigorous surge have abated, at least temporarily. It now appears that in 1982, the industry will encounter overcapacity, excessive inventory accumulations and the probability of declining prices. Therefore, it does seem appropriate that we now take inventory of the present and future markets for titanium with the hope we can identify both near term opportunities as well as challenges the industry now faces. If we view the development of titanium markets as a function of time, they fit rather neatly into three sectors.

In its dual role of pig-iron smelter and gas producer, the blast furnace is a remarkably satisfactory and efficient apparatus. Many metallurgists and engineers have pointed out, however, that since the primary function of the blast furnace is to produce pig iron at the lowest possible cost, its function as a gas producer should be subordinated to this primary purpose. During the past 10 years or more, improvements in blast-furnace technique and economy have, in fact, been directed primarily to increasing efficiency in the use of the reducing power of the gases produced by combustion of coke at the tuyeres, to reduce iron ore within the furnace. The net over-all result is a decrease in the fuel value of the top gas per unit of volume, and per ton of pig iron, which is evidently more than offset in value by the corollary saving in coke and the possibility of increased furnace capacity, for otherwise there would be no point in making such improvements. The purpose of the present paper is to suggest that, while progress has been made in this direction, there is another approach to the problem of increasing the chemical and thermal efficiency of the blast furnace in its primary role as a pig-iron smelter, which appears to offer possibilities of improvement in over-all ecorlomy of a different order of magnitude than results thus far obtained by the use of other expedients. The present argument is based in large part upon the hypothesis that the efficiency and economics of pig-iron smelting are seriously and adversely affected by the phenomenon known as "solution loss," and that the problem of solution loss call be successfully attacked by increasing the over-all pressure; i.e., the "top prcssure" under which the furnace is operated. It is indicated that pressure operation may also be expected to result in concomitant benefits, which may be summed up as generally improved operating conditions, together with a substantial saving in fuel and/or a substantial increase in furnace capacity. Increasing depth in vertical mine shafts penalises conventional hoists in at least four distinct ways: rope weight becomes limiting; travel time increases; the obstruction of ventilation becomes more serious; and with friction drives, rope wear due to torque is aggravated. Travel speed is limited by instability of poorly sprung conveyances on inaccurately aligned flexible rails, and also by the cost of installed power to meet an inherently peaky demand. These problems call for a review of existing designs, firstly in respect of the furniture (Buntons and guides) obstructing the air flow, and secondly in regard to the hoist running in the shaft.

In much of the work reported in the literature on long cores. true connate water value, probably have not been obtained because of insufficient flow of 011 to attain equilibrium. A -.satisfactory method for establishing connate water in long cores has been developed in which oil flow is maintained until no additiona1 water is displaced. INTRODUCTION Long cores have been used by sev-erals investigators in an effort to evaluate the efficiency of oil recovery for various producing schemes. The effects of many variables such as rate of displacement. pressure drop, volume of displacing medium, gas-oil ratio, inter-facial tension, and others have been investigated, and the merits of gas drive have been compared with water drive. In the older experiments no connate water was used. but in the more recent stndies the philosophy of the experiment calls for a core containing oil and connate water (irreducible water) as the starting point of the experiment. The method generally used to establish this condition in long cores involves dynamic' displacement wherein one or more phases are forced through the core. flow being maintained at a constant rate or at a constant pressure until a steady state is reached wherein there is no change of saturation with time. It is one purpose of this paper to point out that in much of the work reported in the literature true connate water values probably have not been obtained. The reason for this failure is pointed out. and a method for obtaining more reliable connate water values on long cores is presented. It is impossible at this time to completely evaluate the effect on the conclusions in the earlier papers resulting from the failure to obtain true connate water in the long cores, but some data are presented which indicate that serious errors may he present in many cases. MATERIALS AND APPARATUS Cores cut front outcrop sandstones (Strawn. Torpedo, and Elgin sandstones) with permeabilities of the order of 300 md were used. The major experiments were made with a core 18-in. long and 2-in. in diameter. Cores of the same diameter but only 12-in. long were used in a few tests? and in some work a core I-in. in diameter and 11-in. long was used. These materials were all somewhat bentonitic. 'To reduce the effect of such constituents, one of the cores (Torpedo No. 10) on which the most work was performed was acid extracted at the start of the experiment. Brine containing 50,000 ppm chloride and naphtha (Stoddard's Solvent) were used as the water and oil phases, respectively. The core was mounted in a rubber sleeve which forms the inner lining of a brass cylinder. In this arrangement2 the rubber sleeve is forced against the core by applying pressure to water in the annular space between the rubber sleeve and the brass cylinder wall. The core is therefore sealed in rubber so that all fluids introduced at the input end of the core flow through the core. With this equipment the core may be easily removed for inspection and analysis. Also, other cores may be introduced for study with no extra time for preparation such as is required when plastic mounting is used. When pressure or conductivity measurements are desired at intermediate points along tile length of the core, the brass cylinder comprising the outer jacket of the core holder is cut into section, of the desired length. Each section is then made up as an individual unit with its own rubber sleeve (see Fig. 1). The individual units are then butted up against a ring of plastic or other insulating material which carries an electrical contact for resistivity measurements and an opening which can be used for the measurements of fluid pressures. The individual units are forced tightly against the plastic ring separators and held in place with several tie rods. Inlet and outlet end butts of the same diameter as the core and several inches in length are provided to control the introduction and withdrawal of fluids and to complete the arrangement for sealing the core within the rubber sleeve. Fluid flow is maintained either by applying pressure to the liquid confined in a reservoir or by the use of a gear pump. The latter is preferable where continuous flow at a moderate rate over a long time interval is desired since a small volume of liquid can be readily recirculated using filters to prevent plugging of the core. Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The 23rd Annual National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The four inductees are: William Wheeler Coleman who served 46 years, from 1911 to 1957, as president and chairman of the company that is now Bucyrus International of South Milwaukee, WI, a world leader in the manufacture of surface and underground mining equipment. Dr. Allen Van Heyl, Jr., an economic geologist who served with the U.S. Geological Survey for nearly 50 years beginning in 1943. He studied more of the nation?s mineral deposits than most could begin to imagine. Arthur Lakes contributed enormously to the geological and mining sciences in the western United States as a geologist, teacher, writer and artist over a period of more than four decades beginning in 1869. The Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO, is named for him. Samuel Calvin McLanahan, through his inventive genius, changed the direction of his family?s company from that of a foundry to a leading manufacturer of minerals processing equipment to become today?s McLanahan

The missing link is a connector between the congested downtown area of Knoxville, Tennessee adjacent to the former World's Fair site, the I_40 I_75, and Western Avenue traffic arteries. This connecter was designed to accommodate the 37,470 motorists who presently travel through these highly congested narrow paths to be replaced by the 21.8 million dollar Henely Street Connecter. All construction and blasting was to take place while existing traffic was re_routed so as to allow access between the downtown area and the vital interstate corridor. To avoid major traffic problems, the project was to be accomplished in three phases: (1) the Western Avenue viaduct demolition; (2) two new viaducts to be constructed; (3) the open box cut at Henely Street next to the L & N Depot. Due to the past attempts by the Fort Sanders Community Home Owners group and the Historical Society to stop the Henely Street Connector, this project involved a very comprehensive blasting damage control program with special provisions of .5 inches per second measured at the foundation of the closest structure.

The attrition-leaching process aims at improving leaching performance when formation of passivation layers at the surface of leached particles is a severe limiting factor, as discussed recently by Julcour and coworkers (Julcour et al., 2015). This paper proposes a geochemistry-based modelling scheme for deriving the window of possible operating conditions for the attrition-leaching process to match the properties of the processed ore. The rationale is that the attrition-leaching process maintains the surface of reacting particles in an unpassivated state by continuous mechanical removal of surface leach layers, so that the process reactions can be modelled from thermodynamic equilibria throughout the duration of the process. The strength of the proposed modelling approach is that it bridges the gap between the properties of the ore and the process operating conditions. The present paper exemplifies the proposed process modelling route for derivation of the attrition-leaching process operating conditions in the context of the leaching of silicate ores, matching model predictions against controlled laboratory experiments. It is shown how thermodynamic modelling, when used in conjunction with a solid knowledge of the phases present in the system, can assist with deciding upon suitable process operating conditions. As an example, this firstprinciple modelling approach predicted that steel grinding medium would be converted into siderite (FeCO3) under a wide range of operating conditions, which led to questioning this initial choice of grinding medium for the attrition-leaching process under mineral carbonation conditions. It is emphasised that the same approach could be applied to ores of greater economic significance.

Strength evaluation programs, based on sub- jecting a number of 5-718 inch (0.15 m) diameter core samples from highly fractured or poorly consolidated rock, to triaxial compression tests, have been successfully completed. An innovative approach was required since con- ventional methods with similar materials had not produced reliable results. Drilling methods were modified, and specially designed transparent core barrels were used. Sample preparation was successfully accomplished by using speciallydesignedtools and unorthodox hand- ling methods. Initial tests were carried out on weathered oxides from an open pit copper mine. The technique was later used successfully where the test material was weak, friable coal. The procedures used offer a practical method of testing weak materials where conventional methods would not be successful.

"In projects involving resource development and plant optimization, the use of in-mine geophysics can deliver considerable benefit. The value proposition lies in using very high resolution downhole measurements to model process-plant outcomes. The calibration procedure used to convert in-situ physical properties into process engineering parameters is illustrated using two iron ore projects. Data correction was related either to orebody structure or mineral formation. The deliverable from this approach is a series of high-definition sections indicating the variability of ore delivered to a front-end separation plant and parameters for mine scheduling and stockpile design needed for maximum product yield.RÉSUMÉ Dans des projets de développement des ressources et d’optimisation de l’usine, l’utilisation de la géophysique minière peut engendrer des bénéfices considérables. La valeur de la proposition réside dans l’utilisation de diagraphies à très haute résolution afin de modéliser les résultats de l’usine de traitement. La procédure d’étalonnage utilisée pour convertir les propriétés physiques in situ en des paramètres d’ingénierie de procédés est illustrée en se basant sur deux projets de minerai de fer. La correction des données porte sur la structure de la masse minérale ou de la formation minérale. Les livrable attendus de cette approche sont une série de sections à haute définition, signalant la variabilité du minerai livré à une usine de séparation de première ligne, des paramètres pour l’échéancier de la mine et la conception des haldes requis pour une production optimale."

O Brasil figura como uma das grandes potências minerais do mundo, sendo esse setor de grande valia para a economia brasileira por gerar milhares de empregos diretos e indiretos. Apesar de sua importância econômica e social, a atividade da mineração ocasiona uma grande geração de rejeitos. O país é detentor de um robusto arcabouço legal, com uma série de regulamentações a respeito do meio ambiente no setor mineral, sendo que 14 delas são específicas para rejeitos da mineração. No entanto, o acidente ocorrido com a barragem da Samarco em 2015 trouxe novamente à pauta a temática dos rejeitos, o que tem instigado uma série de discussões na cadeia da mineração. Neste trabalho, os autores procuraram caracterizar três aspectos: o cenário atual da cadeia produtiva da mineração, a problemática da geração de rejeitos e o nível de desenvolvimento tecnológico que visa o seu aproveitamento. Esse conteúdo está estruturado em duas partes. A primeira parte, retratada neste documento, analisa a cadeia produtiva da mineração e a dinâmica que caracteriza a participação de seus vários atores, assim como as formas de aumentar os investimentos em processos de recuperação de rejeitos.

ArcelorMittal Prijedor is a goethitic iron ore mine located in the north-west of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which mainly supplies ArcelorMittal’s European subsidiaries. Annual production of the asset stands at the level of 1.5–2.1 million tons of iron ore product which is sent to ArcelorMittal Zenica steelmaking plant. Two types of products with approximately 50 per cent Fe are generated in Prijedor through a process composed by crushing, screening, and magnetic separation stages. Within this process one of the tailings produced is called ‘ultrafines’. The ‘ultrafines’ product corresponds to the desliming hydrocyclones overflow in Prijedor plant, which is classified in a size fraction below 25 μm and corresponds to about 5 per cent of feed. This material is richer in iron than the coarser size fractions of the ore but do not present a good performance in concentration processes. In this way, several studies have been carried out during the last years to find solutions to use the ‘ultrafines’ material without success. In this context, the possibility of dehydroxylate the goethite contained in the material transforming the mineral into hematite and thus increasing the iron grade of the final product was investigated. During the research, several dehydroxylation tests with different temperatures and time of exposure were performed. Using dihydroxylation process at temperatures higher than 800°C it was possible to produce a material with 43 per cent Fe from the original 39 per cent Fe ‘ultrafines’ sample. In addition, the dehydroxylation tests confirmed that goethite becomes completely transformed into hematite at 400°C (with an exposure time of 60 mins) and material is completely sintered at 1200°C. A simulation study based on dehydroxylation tests results showed that it would be possible to use a ‘ultrafines’ product with Fe grade higher than 45 per cent to produce a material with 50 per cent Fe through a complete dehydroxylation process.

Production of structural hot strip coils in yield strengths up to 700 MPa and higher is increasing worldwide. In addition to requiring higher strengths, structural designs require good formability, toughness and weldability. Toughness and formability come from optimization of ductility properties while weldability comes from lower carbon equivalent alloy designs. The key to the production of optimized cost effective hot strip produced structural coils is to create the correct balance of a proper alloy/processing design to create as fine and uniformly distributed cross sectional grain size as possible. In addition to the creation of the fine/uniformly distributed cross sectional grain size, the correct microstructure needs to be created. In the higher yield strength grades, not only does the grain size/distribution play a role but a proper understanding and control of microalloying precipitation kinetics is required. This paper will present various examples of hot strip alloy designs to produce cost effective hot strip structural coil in yield strengths up to 700 MPa with good ductility and weldability. In addition, steelmaking/casting parameters will be discussed to assure successful production. Optimized reheating, rolling and cooling parameters of these alloy designs will be introduced in an accompanying paper.

The theme of the conference this year is diversification. One way to diversify is through acquisition. The principle underlying the winner's curse is that in competitive bidding situations where the value of the asset bid for is uncertain the winning bid will overstate the true value of the asset. The successful bidder is blessed with the winner's curse. What this paper will explore is to what extent this is true; how acquirers can avoid being blessed with the winners curse; and show how joint venture deal structures are used within the mining industry to avoid the winners curse.

About mid-December 1936, the safety director of a large coal corporation visited the authors at the Bureau's Experimental coal mine to discuss a rock-dust barrier he had invented primarily for use in trackless entries of coal mines. The rock dust in this device was carried in its original paper containers and means were provided for ripping these open so that the dust might be scattered in the path of an explosion. The inventor termed the device a "bag barrier", and this term has been adopted in the present paper for convenience. At that time the device was in an early stage of development, and the inventor felt that the barrier should be tested to determine whether it had enough promise of being successful to justify further development. The matter was taken under consideration and finally three tests were made during the week of February 15, 1937. It was concluded that while the device did stop an explosion in two of the three tests, it was much loss effective than ordinary rock dusting, and that too few data were obtained to permit direct comparison with tests of other barriers. Apparently, the conditions under which the device could, be successful were somewhat limited, out the limits could not be defined without additional tests.

Inflation, fuel shortages, environmental restrictions, and a worldwide recession that sharply curtailed the demand for goods and services, were the main causes for the poor performance & virtually all industrial minerals in 1975. This poor showing was not a surprise. As Felix Shay correctly predicted in his introductory remarks to last year's industrial Minerals Review (ME, Feb. 1975, p. 70), ". . . the minerals industry will soon be facing falling demand as a consequence of sharp declines in auto production, housing, appliances, and other consumer goods. Moreover, when sales weaken. the high-volume, low-priced industrial minerals will incur sharply.

Concentrating plants, in common with other types of industrial plants, cannot operate without lectric power. The elctric distribution system and utilization equipment; therefore, must be carefully considered in all phases of plant design. Two important aspects of proper distribution and usage of electric power are the selection of voltage levels and the methods of system grounding. These are not necessarily the most important design considerations, but are perhaps more controversial than other major points, Modern plants demand increasing amounts of power which, since electric power is the product of voltage and current means higher voltages or currents. Higher voltages require more insulation, higher currents more conductor. The equipment designer?s problem is to obtain in his transformer, cable, switchgear, controller, motor, etc a balance of insulation and conductor to obtain a satisfactory design at lowest cost. To provide the most economical system, both in initial and operating costs requires the system designer to select the proper voltage level. Adequate voltage also permits expansion to meet future requirements, and results in better operation of utilization equipment, Relatively little advancement has been made in recent years in improving conductors; however, great progress has been made in improving insulation. Thus modern plants, in general, now find it more economical to use higher voltages than they did previously. For example plants which only a few years ago would have used 2400 volts as a system voltage often find nowdays that 4160 volts is their proper choice. If the plant requires 10,000 kva br more, then an even higher voltage, such as 13,800 volts, will prove economical. However, for the average concentration plant, with less than 10,000 kva demand, the choice of distribution voltages is between 2400 and 4160 volts, and 480 volts will be used for the low voltage utilization system.

"INTRODUCTION Tunnel is a closed space structure and it is necessary to ensure the sufficient time and route for safe evacuation for the tunnel users in case of a tunnel fire. In order to do so, damages and collapse of the tunnel linings and the secondary disasters can be avoided. Furthermore, the road tunnel is one of important infrastructural facilities and stopping its function for a long time for a tunnel fire could cause a great economic loss. Therefore, the tunnel structure shall be the one which can be repaired as soon as possible, and the fire protection methods need to be selected among those which enable the service to start as early as possible. The necessity of the fire protection works is evaluated for the tunnel structure with the consideration of the expensive tunnel construction cost and the economic effects of the tunnel service. Naturally, the fire protection works, which can protect the tunnel linings from the tunnel fire with small repairs, are inevitable. Design engineers of the fire protection works estimate the scale of fire from the degree of damages on the linings and its repair cost, the effect of fire extinguishers placed inside of the tunnel, the secondary disasters in accordance with the tunnel lining damages if any, and the ratio of fire protection cost calculated from tunnel operation cost. Based on this information, the engineers design the fire protection works according to the permissible limits Among the design cases of the tunnel fire protection in Japan, as shown in Table 1, there is no cases that used the fire temperature-time curve to design the fire protection works for large fire caused by vehicles catching fire. However, the most of cases used 30-60 minutes for fire duration based on the entry prohibition of dangerous goods carrying vehicles or the effect of early fire fighting. This paper will study the variation between different methods used for fire protection in road tunnel in Japan to evaluate them and try to found some recommendations. Especial l care will be attention to Polypropylenes (PP) which is starting to be applied lately."

Emphasis is given to the critical areas of slurry transport, screen design, pump selection, elimination of fast wearing components and maintenance reduction. Sample point design to fulfil the specific accuracy requirements for On Stream Analysis (3% to 10% relative) is discussed.
