The scheelite concentrate was leached with a mixture of sulfuric and oxalic acids. Chemical compositions, mineral phases, and morphology were characterized by XRF, XRD, and SEM–EDS. Based on the results of the single-factor experiments, the response surface methodology (RSM) was chosen to optimize the leaching parameters: temperature, time, and concentrations of sulfuric and oxalic acids. The RSM results indicate that the optimum values for those parameters are as follows: temperature 72 ℃, sulfuric acid concentration 1.48 mol/L, oxalic acid concentration 0.96 mol/L, and reaction time 2 h. Under the optimal leaching conditions, the model predicts a maximum leaching yield of 99.5%, compared to the value of 99.1% obtained experimentally, that is, a discrepancy of only 0.04%. This good correlation shows that the quadratic polynomial equation obtained by the RSM optimization is reliable. The importance on leaching parameters of scheelite is, in decreasing order, temperature, time, sulfuric acid concentration, and oxalic acid concentration.

THIS paper describes the results of microscopic examination of a series of brass pipes removed from apartment and office buildings in New York City, adjacent localities on Long Island, and Philadelphia. They were selected as typical of approximately four hundred pipe specimens obtained over a period of five years during an investigation of corrosion in hot-water installations. A part of the investigation is reported in this paper and includes a brief history of the pipes, a description of their inside surface and microstructure, and a study of the effects of corrosion, with particular reference to the structural aspects of local and selective dezincification. Although the bibliography on the corrosion of brass pipes is quite extensive, it refers almost entirely to corrosion in sea water. The authors believe that their examination of this series of pipes, which had been subjected to the corrosive action of fresh water for various lengths of time, may throw some additional light on the problem of corrosion. PIPES EXAMINED The pipes were made by different manufacturers and their sizes range from ¾ in. to 4 in. nominal inside diameter, the majority being within I to 2 in. They can be divided into two groups according to chemical composition: (I) with a copper content of 60 to 62 per cent and (2) with a copper content of 65 to 68 per cent. The first group (pipes made of Muntz metal) comprises 22 pipes and the second (pipes made of high brass) comprises 18 pipes. The pipes had been in service in various locations in the hot-water systems of the buildings involved. Some were taken from horizontal lines in the basement, some from overhead distributors and some from vertical risers. The distance, in terms of feet of pipe, of the specimens from the hot-water generator was no less than 75 ft. and often 100 to 300 ft. In the majority of cases the water-heating equipment was provided with a regulator to limit the temperature of the hot water supply. The normal range of temperature in pipe systems of this kind is 100° to 160°F. WATER SUPPLIES The average chemical composition of the water supplies carried by the pipes is shown in Table I. In evaluating the corrosiveness of a natural water, four factors are considered of prime importance: namely, hardness, alkalinity, pH and silica content. The waters listed in Table I are characterized by relatively low hardness, low alkalinity, low pH and low silica content. The waters of lower pH and higher CO2 content are more corrosive. "La Mine Doyon is a gold mining operation located in northwestern Quebec, approximately 35 km east of Rouyn-Noranda and 85 km west of Val d'Or. The mine is jointly owned by Lac Minerals Ltd. and Cambior Inc. with Lac Minerals as the manager. Production statistics as of February 1987 are 6.4 million tonnes milled at an average grade of5.8 g/t Au. Current reserves of9.9 million tonnes at 5. 7 g/ t Au to a depth of400m have been outlined. Indicated reserves below this horizon could considerably increase this reserve.The mine currently consists of two open pit and two underground mine operations, producing approximately 3600 tonnes per day of ore at an average grade of6 g/t. The ore is currently processed at the La Mine Doyon mill at a rate of1400tid and at Lac's East Malartic mill at 1950 t/d. Ore is also processed intermittently at Lac's Les Terrains Auriferes mill and at Noranda's Horne Division.La Mine Doyon is currently in the midst of a program to expand and upgrade the mill at La Mine Doyon. The expansion to 3000 t/day includes the conversion of the existing crushing and grinding circuits to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill circuit and the existing filter wash plant to a CIP (carbon-in-pulp) recovery plant. The economics of this project are based on reduced operating costs (milling and trucking) and improved recovery due to updated technology. HistoryThe area between Noranda and Val d'Or has a long history of mining activity in both base metals and gold, dating back to the early 1930s. More recently, several new orebodies have been discovered and exploited in the area including La Mine Doyon, Lac's Mine de Bousquet, Dumagami, and the Kiena operation.La Mine Doyon was discovered in the early 1970s, and brought into limited production in late 1979. The mine was started on are reserves of 2.75 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t and was, thus, considered a small, short-term operation. Mining started at an initial rate of 550 tI d with all the ore being shipped to Noranda's Horne smelter as flux. When Lac's East Malartic mill became available for custom milling, Doyon commenced shipping to that facility at a rate of 650 t/d. As a result of some equipment additions and an improved understanding of the ore, the East Malartic mill throughput was gradually increased from 650 t/d to the current rate of 1950 t/d."

EVERY man connected with the mining industry should take a significant pride in the fact that he belongs to an industry and to a profession that, from the beginning, has been constructive. The miner digs his ore and he gives the metal to art, to industry, and to commerce. The nature of our business is destructive only in that we deal with a wasting asset. That should be a source of great pride to those who belong to the profession. But unfortunately, the product of our mines, our smelters, and our re- fineries does not always go to constructive purposes. There are times when, in the administration of the affairs of men, our product chiefly goes to purposes which are destructive. When we look upon the panorama of horror that is being enacted throughout the world today, we wonder whether any effort toward the development of civilization and culture and education and well-being has been worthwhile. We are appalled to see the things that have been developed, through the application of science, toward progress and efficiency, now used for the catastrophic destruction of those things which are the most valuable that man has built. We must find hope that this is but an episodic thing; that it must, in the infinite wisdom of the Almighty, usher in a period of peace and progress, of civilization and development that will make man's existence upon earth worthwhile.

South Africa has two main platinum reef deposits, namely the Merensky reef and the UG2 reef. These reefs are currently mined using traditional drilling and blasting methods. Mechanized cutting could potentially enable continuous mining, which would offer significant advantages. This would require thorough understanding of the cutability of the rock. To explore this, a linear cutting machine was developed to conduct laboratory scale cutting tests. This work describes the development and commissioning of the cutting machine using sandstone, as well as subsequent characterization tests on UG2 reef samples. UG2 reef has large variability in strength on a millimeter scale. This introduces uncertainty in the test results due to added variance from one cut to the next for the same UG2 reef sample. Another problem is the variability in rock properties of the UG2 reef, when testing samples from different mines. The cutting tests led to fine fragmentation, which is known to be a significant problem for cleaning operations in underground stopes and warrants further research. A finite element method simulation of the rock cutting was conducted using ANSYS LS-DYNA and the continuous surface cap model to simulate rock cutting in the UG2 reef. It was found that it is possible to use LS-DYNA with the continuous surface cap model to model rock cutting of UG2 reef and get acceptable results, but the user must calibrate the model parameters using the experimental results. Therefore, the model is only fit for one set of cutting parameters and further work is required to generalize results.

Under such conditions close control of screen sizes of primary-crusher products is a secondary consideration and has received very little attention. The growth and development of tae nonmetallic industries have drawn more attention to primary crushing. Many of these industries are interested is the production of a minimum amount of fines and a maximum amount of a coarse Product that meets certain definite size specifications, a condition entirely different from that in the field of ore dressing. Under such conditions tae proper type of primary-crushing equipment and a knowledge of the factors governing the operation of such equipment nest are essential to economical production of a satisfactory material.]

Energy efficiency is a cost-effective way of both bolstering energy security and limiting the harmful effects of energy use on the environment. Mining is an inherently energy-intensive activity, and the 2008 revision of South Africa’s National Energy Efficiency Strategy (NEES) set a target of a 10% reduction in energy consumption by 2015 for the mining sector. In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of the NEES in improving energy efficiency in the South African coal mining sector by surveying energy intensity at a number of operations, and analysing energy efficiency trends and energy use by process and energy carrier at an underground coal mine in Mpumalanga. Most mines surveyed exhibit an increase in energy intensity over time. At the case study mine, the increase was primarily due to increased energy use in the beneficiation and discard reclaiming processes. Trends in energy consumption are a poor reflection of trends in energy intensity, as a decline in energy consumption is most easily achieved by reducing production. A more appropriate metric for energy efficiency at coal mines is energy intensity, defined as energy use per unit of saleable product, relative to a multi-year baseline. The evidence suggests that the NEES has been ineffective in promoting energy efficiency in South African coal mines. We propose that greater success could be achieved by monitoring and reporting on energy intensity at the process level, and by incentivizing energy efficiency gains.

"Self-similarity is proofed to be a common feature when brittle material is comminuted, either in particle bed or single particle mode. Appropriate test work is well documented for particle sizes less than 7 mm in several publications. In contrast, almost no research has been done for coarser particles. The aim of this paper is to show that the fracture pattern of coarser material also tends to be self-similar. Hence, single particles of quartzite, granodiorite and dolomite were comminuted under compressive load. The focus was set on three different size fractions -3.15 +2.5 mm, -31.5 +25 mm and lumps -300 mm. According to the wide range of particle sizes, three different piston-die presses were used with a maximum compressive force ranging from 5 kN to 4000 kN. The force-displacement curves were recorded in order to calculate the specific comminution energy. Additionally, the -31.5 +25 mm size fraction was crushed in a laboratory scale jaw crusher and a roll crusher. Some authors report that the energy-size-reduction relationship of self-similar materials can be approximated by a linear function, which is independent of the comminution equipment. In their charts the slope can be seen as a product-size-independent grindability measure. Our tests show a self-similar breakage behavior when particles in a range of -300 +3 mm are comminuted in single particle mode. Furthermore, the products of the piston-die-presses and the roll crusher are similar to each other in a self-similar representation of the particle size distribution. The jaw crusher product, however, is not self-similar compared to the piston-die-press products. Finally, the linear energy-size-reduction relationships are confirmed for each fraction, but show size dependent slopes."

"Tin oxide (SnU2) thin films of thicknesses in the range 100-600 nm were prepared on glass substrates by vacuum evaporation at ambient temperature. The films were characterized by transmittance measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations and energy dispersion X-ray analysis (EDAX). It is found that the films have high transmittance and non sharp absorption edges. XRD diffractograms showed that the films are amorphous and the SEM micrographs showed that the surfaces are smooth, uniform and well covered with the material. The EDAX analysis showed that the films are deficient in oxygen. Indirect optical bandgap energy and Urbach tailing in the bandgap was observed, and the width of the tail, which is related with disorder and localized states, was estimated.IntroductionTin oxide is an n-type wide bandgap semiconducting material with a direct bandgap energy of 4 eV and an indirect bandgap of 2.6 eV [1], where inherent oxygen vacancies act as an n-type dopant [2], Tin oxide thin films have been used for transparent electrodes in photoelectric conversion devices namely amorphous silicon solar cells, liquid crystal displays, gas discharge displays, etc. [3]. Perfectly amorphous thin SnO2 films show good electrical response to reducing gases in air and could, hence, be applied to construct semiconductor gas sensors where the metal oxide films function as a monograin-eqivalent active layer [4]. Amorphous SnU2 can also be used in extended gate field-effect transistors (EGFET) as a pH sensor, where the sensitive part is made of the SnO2/Al structure. This device can be used to detect and to quantify any kind of substance that can produce or consume protons, like an enzymatic reaction, therefore showing a large range of applications as biosensors [5].There are different methods to prepare SnO2 films, such as atomic layer deposition (ALD) [6], reactive magnetron sputtering [7], chemical vapor deposition [8, 9], dip coating [10], spray pyrolysis (SP) [3, 11-14], and evaporation [8], The thermal evaporation method was chosen to produce SnO2 thin films in this work because deposition by this technique does not present any compositional problems. In addition, it is a low temperature technique, which increases the probability of producing amorphous films. To increase this probability, the films were deposited at ambient temperature."

The design, operation, and performance of an integrated pilot plant for recovering zinc and copper from a complex sulfide ore are described. Metallurqical processing comprised selective sulfate roasting in a fluid bed, leaching in a weak sulfuric acid solution, recovering copper by cementation with scrap iron, air oxidation to remove soluble iron, more-or-less conventional Purification for removal of impurities deleterious to zinc electrolysis, recovering zinc by electrolyzing solutions, and recycling spent electrolyte to the sulfating roaster. The effects of several feed preparation and roasting variables on the sulfation response of zinc, copper, and iron are set forth, together with the electrolyzing characteristics of the zinc solutions. SEVERAL years ago, St. Joseph Lead Co. undertook a research program to develop procedures for winning values from a complex ore. The deposit was a massive sulfide ore body containing upwards of 65 pct pyrite. Gangue, composed principally of quartz, calcite, dolomite, and alumina, comprised only 10 to 20 pct of the mineralized zones. Zinc, lead, and copper values were variable, but averaged about 6.7 pct Zn, 2.6 pct Pb, and 0.4 pct Cu. Early in the exploratory test work, it was established that the intimate physical association of the minerals in the ore made beneficiation by conventional flotation procedures difficult. Accordingly, in addition to a comprehensive program to investigate physical methods of ore beneficiation, a research program was established to develop a direct metallurgical method for processing the ore. After surveying a number of potential methods for recovery of both metal and sulfur values, effort was concentrated on the development of a sulfate roasting process. It is the pilot-plant development of the sulfate roasting-solution purification—electrolyzing procedures which forms the subject of the present paper. PREPILOT PLANT INVESTIGATIONS From a thermodynamic viewpoint, it is feasible to sulfate selectively a host of metals, including Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Co, in an iron sulfide ore without sulfating iron. Of course, a number of conditions such as roasting temperature and gas composition must be controlled. In addition, as first disclosed by Hybinette,' an alkali metal salt is frequently beneficial in promoting the sulfation reactions. The application of fluid bed roasting to the sulfate roasting of nonferrous metals was pioneered by Stephens of Battelle Memorial Institute.' Subsequently, Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Ltd. developed an unique process for selectively sulfating and recovering nickel, copper, and cobalt from their nickeliferous pyrrhotite, which recently has been described in an excellent paper by Thornhill.3 One of the unique features of the Falconbridge process is that the feed is introduced into the fluidized roasting furnace in a manner such that the feed slurry is broken up into droplets and the droplets lose their moisture before contacting the surface of the fluidized bed. The dried droplets do not tend to cake or fuse, but rather remain as discrete agglomerates of concentrate particles and roast without significant degradation. The risks associated with operating water reservoirs and tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are different because of their different purposes, methods of construction and operation, and characteristics of the materials impounded and their flow behaviour. Regardless of the differences, these two types of structures are often put in the same category when it comes to risk assessment and the application of relevant methodologies, which may result in unrealistic outcomes. In this paper we investigate whether it is possible to apply the risk ranking methodology designed for water reservoirs to TDFs and overview the key differences between these two types of structures. We also provide a comparative analysis of the results obtained by conducting a risk assessment of the operation of a TSF, applying the method recommended by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), and analyse the results using the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) technique. It is concluded that a more realistic evaluation of risk levels can be obtained by adopting a systematic approach to risk assessment in accordance with the traditional risk definition on which the FMEA technique is based.

The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project (MPSO) is in Doha Qatar. This technical paper will discuss and explain the three major stages of geotechnical investigation employed. Stage one the tender geotechnical data and how this was used to design the TBM and identify various areas of risk. Stage two was the selection of supplementary geotechnical investigation methodologies. Stage three was the geotechnical investigation by specialist equipment installed on the TBM and providing further data on a real time basis as the TBM was advancing. Analysis of all the data will be provided along with the lessons learned.

The EMEW® cell has been developed to overcome a number of inherent limitations in conventional electrowinning technology, particularly the high cost and restricted process windows characteristic of conventional hardware. The technology has been widely demonstrated to achieve high performance for various metals under chemical conditions well outside the limits required for efficient operation of conventional cells. This process flexibility offers significant opportunities for cost savings. in recovery of zinc from primary and secondary sources. The EMEW® technology is now available on a fully engineered basis, as a versatile commercial alternative to conventional electrowinning hardware. Application of the EMEW® cell for recovery of secondary zinc material offers significant advantages to the recycling industry. For example, a selective caustic leach can be used where there are high levels of iron or other contaminants in the target material. The reagent requirement is minimal as most of the caustic is regenerated in the bell and zinc dust that may be required for electrolyte purification is produced in the cell. A high purity zinc powder or cathode is produced in the cell. In the case of acidic zinc electrolytes, the cell is capable of operating over a much wider range of operating conditions than a conventional cell.

Ausmelt is supplying commercial quantities of an alkyl hydroxamate flotation collector AM28 for flotation of oxide and supergene base metal ores and tailings. AM28 is a non-hazardous product used as a ten per cent to 50 per cent solution in dilute potassium hydroxide. It is a selective flotation collector for oxide or oxidised base metal minerals and replaces conventional sulfidisation for oxide mineral flotation. At Radio Hill, the AM28 is used in conjunction with traditional sulfide collectors, which allows simultaneous flotation of oxide and sulfide copper minerals. The Fox Resources Radio Hill copper concentrator near Karratha, Western Australia, is currently configured to treat supergene copper ore sourced from the West Whundo open pit. This Archean VMS type copper deposit has been deformed and remobilised with uplift, erosion and weathering to form a significant supergene zone. The sulfide copper minerals present in the upper zone are digenite and chalcocite with lesser chalcopyrite and covellite. Oxide copper minerals present include cuprite, with lesser malachite and azurite. Gangue minerals include quartz, talc and chlorite. Plant trials at Radio Hill are reported for supergene West Whundo ore, where the AM28 was stage added into the circuit at nominally 80 g/t. Plant data over three months shows the copper recovery increased consistently from around 50 - 60 per cent to above 70 per cent when AM28 was added. This has been proven statistically. The grade of the concentrate was consistent with and without AM28, at nominally 22 - 24 per cent copper.

As shallow coal reserves with easier mining conditions are exhausted, future deep coal mining with difficult mining conditions may face significant economic, technical and environmental challenges. Moreover, due to increased coal production capacity with the new generation longwall systems, predicting adverse mining conditions has become more important than ever before. The potential impact of these difficult conditions is an increase in mining risks and costs. Reliable prediction of rock mass deformation, mine stability and mine water inflow is not only essential for improving mine safety and reduction of coal production costs, but it is also important for the assessment and management of the environmental impact of mining. This paper briefly describes an integrated approach to mine groundwater simulation and prediction. Central to this integrated approach is a three-dimensional computer code called COSFLOW, developed by CSIRO of Australia in collaboration with NEDO and JCOAL of Japan to address the pressing issues of mine water management. COSFLOW incorporates unique features that make it ideal for the simulation of coal mining and examining the interaction between rock fracture, aquifer interference and water flow. This paper also presents an example of an application of the integrated approach and COSFLOW in water inflow prediction at Springvale Mine in New South Wales.

"The new permissible blasting device, Cardox, utilizes as a blasting agent liquid carbon dioxide which is discharged.as a gas from a steel container or shell. The loaded shell is placed in a borehole, stemmed, and tamped in a manner similar to that employed with explosives, and is fired by electricity.The Bureau of Mines' approval for use of the device in coal mines was granted as Approval No. 1 under date of October 3, 1928; as the result of tests made under the conditions and requirements of Schedule 20. There have been three subsequent extensions whereby minor modifications in the original design were granted.The permissibility of the device is subject to the following conditions; (1) It shall be in all respects similar to the sample submitted for tests; (2) certain thicknesses of disc and. weights of heater ingredient and of carbon dioxide, all of which are set forth in Table 2 under the provisions governing permissibility, must be used: (3) the rear cap must always be in place after the shell has been charged, to prevent accidental firing; and (4) firing must be done by means of a permissible-type blasting unit.The permissibility of Cardox was established by gallery tests similar to those used in testing explosives for permissibility. In these tests the shell was discharged into gallery 1 without causing any ignition of gas and air or of gas, dust, and air mixtures there. The conditions of charging the shell, such as weight of the ingredients of the heater element, the carbon dioxide charge, and thicknesses of the disc, were varied according to the conditions under which it would be likely to be used in blasting. The tests made in gallery 1 are here described in detail, as are also the tests which have been made for determining the propulsive strength of the device and the quantities of poisonous gases given off when a shell is discharged."

The experiments herein described were undertaken with a view to investigating thoroughly the influence of carbon on the tensile and impact physical properties of carbon steel. The original comprehensive plan included investigation of a series of steels with varying carbon contents over a wide range of heat treatments. These were to be studied as to their static tensile qualities, and also their resistance to shock as measured by the Charpy impact bending test. A thorough metallographic examination was likewise included in the schedule. The Charpy tests and the metallographic examination have not been completed to date, and are accordingly withheld for another report. All heat treatments, however, have been made, and the static tensile tests have been completed. A description of the procedure of the experiment and the results thus far obtained are therefore reported herein. Conclusions No attempt is made to draw general conclusions from these experiments, but the curves and the data are submitted as being of general importance and wide applicability. Composition of Materials An attempt was made to secure steels increasing in carbon by increments of 0.1 per cent. from 0.1 per cent. up to 0.8 per cent., and from that composition to 1.6 per cent. by increments of 0.2 per cent. Actually, however, steels of the composition given in Table I were procured, and as the carbon contents were arranged sufficiently well so that satisfactory curves could be drawn showing the relation between carbon content and other properties, these steels were used in the experiments.
