Over 10 million tourists have visited Vietnam in 2016. Travel and tourism accounted for 9.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014. At the same time, as with many other resource-rich developing countries, Vietnam has been developing its extractive resources sector as a means of promoting the country’s social and economic development. In 2015, mining was the third largest contributor to GDP, and accounted for 8% of Vietnam’s gross domestic product. Vietnam is the third largest mineral producer in SE Asia. Although it produces zinc, nickel, bauxite, and manganese, coal mining is its most developed sector. The country has over two hundred coal mines, and total reserves of approximately 6 billion tons. Quang Nihn Province, where the World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay is located, is a very important tourism destination. It is also a coal-rich region where mining extraction and processing have been active since the early 20th century. Vietnam is signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is aware of the importance and the challenges involved in managing the extractive sector in a way that does not undermine its tourism industry and yet that contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this end Vietnam is taking actions towards implementing more advanced coal-mining extraction and processing techniques. The country is furthermore promoting a responsible mining sector, and is investing in programs that foster environmental protection and sustainable tourism. This paper examines the case of the Ha Long Bay region and the project involved in relocating the Hong Gai coal preparatory factory from a seafront area to a mountainside area. This paper provides a preliminary review of the initiatives adopted by the government of Vietnam to address the existing challenges that have resulted from a focus on promoting the country’s socio-economic development through the exploration of its rich coal endowment. Furthermore, it also describes Vietnam’s legal and policy frameworks. In conclusion this study identified that Vietnam has drafted a National Action Plan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. The country is also taking an integrated approach to implementing the SDGs agenda and that it is assigning responsibility to a variety of ministries to achieve SDGs’ specific targets. Furthermore the country is changing policies and the legal framework in order to facilitating the execution of the work of agencies that are responsible for implementation, regulation and enforcement. In this respect, the approval of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Development Goals is another important step in that direction. While the decision of supplying its internal market with high quality coal helps minimize negative environmental impacts in Vietnam, exporting low quality coal to other countries does not help resolve the problem of CO2 emissions globally. With respect to the 2030 Agenda, this may be considered a temporary solution since to achieve the SDG goals, Vietnam will have to consider other sources of cleaner energy in order to align with the Sustainable Development Goals # 7 on affordable and clean energy.

IN my review a year ago I pointed out that a small coal-mining companies as well as large had decided that the so called ?central shop? was a benefit. These central shops replaced in a large measure the commercial shops operated by those who have no direct connection with production of cod. Central shops in this time of salvage and major repairs have proved their worth. In addition, many of the larger companies had in their central shops equipment available for the production of many thousands of parts for our vast war machine and, as subcontractors, are doing this type of work. This is a real contribution to the war endeavor. Lack of new supplies has resulted in exhaustion of those stocks formerly stored or hidden in underground shanties. This means that the small stock of repair parts likely LO be available to any mine

Several structural characteristics change during intensive milling such as chemical composition, phase transformation, crystallite size, lattice strain, lattice parameter (s) and solid reactivity etc. The creation of defects enhances the stored energy (enthalpy) in the solids and consequently causes a decrease of activation barrier for the process and/or subsequent processes. In this paper, the effects of milling on the structural changes of hematite have been investigated using dry millings. The structural changes have been characterized using a combination analysis of BET surface area measurements and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Besides, the hydrogen reduction behaviors and kinetics of mechanically activated samples and initial sample were studied using simultaneous thermal analysis (STA). The methods of Williamson-Hall and Warren-Averbach were used for analyzing of XRD patterns to resolve and extract the microstructural characteristics of hematite phases. It was concluded that the breakage and aggregation of particles take place mainly in the starting and prolonged stages of dry grinding, respectively. The BET surface area enlarged steadily over the grinding processes whatever milling methods were utilized. The characterization of structural changes revealed that the hematite milled under various conditions did not undergo any significant reaction or phase transformation during milling processes. In addition, X-ray amorphous phase con-tent increased gradually with extending the grinding intensity. The maximum X-ray amorphous phase exceeds about 81% after 9 hours of milling in both tumbling mill and vibratory mill. The Williamson-Hall plots revealed the anisotropic character of line broadening for deformed hematite and changes in the trend of microstructural characteristics as a function of milling time. It was found that the surface weighted crystallite size decreases and lattice strain increases over the grinding periods. The minimum surface weighted crystallites were calculated about 17.3 nm, 12.2 nm for the products of tumbling and vibratory mills respectively. The maximum lattice strain,, in the grinding with tumbling and vibratory mills was calculated about 4.44×10-3 and 3.95×10-3respectively. 21/210nmLe=<> The non-isothermal kinetic analysis of the products revealed that Fe 2O3 reduced to Fe in a two-step process via Fe3O4. Intensive grinding resulted in improved resolution of overlapping reduction events. It was also established that the mechanical activation had a positive effect on the first step of reduction. The prereduction step in the activated samples initiated and completed at lower temperatures than that in non-activated samples. The activation energy of reduction decreased at the first step of reaction with increasing the grinding intensity. Intensive milling increased slightly the average activation energy of the second step of reduction due to the present of finely agglomerated particles and intensive sintering of the particles in higher temperature ranges.

"Geometallurgy aims to improve resource efficiency by creating a spatial model of an orebody in order to forecast ore processing behaviour. This enables calculation of the economic value of each ore block and the use of this information for production optimisation and hence an improved economic return. Modelling uses different approaches to link geological information with mineral processing: traditional approach uses chemical elements; proxy approach – small-scale geometallurgical tests; and mineralogical approach – minerals.A geometallurgical model is obtained during execution of a geometallurgical program encompassing the entire value chain of ore processing. Available methods for establishing a geometallurgical model are in many cases limited and not yet comprehensively validated. Some of the limitations include: sampling density, assaying methods and quality, forecast accuracy block model content, geostatistical solutions for non-additive components, blending and assessment of positive impact of geometallurgy on the project. Synthetic ore models combined with process simulations and production scheduling, based on strong case studies, present a viable way to address these shortcomings. Such synthetic ore models will have realistic elemental and mineral distribution, textural attributes and 3D variability for input into the design of an appropriate geometallurgical program.A synthetic orebody was created for an apatite-bearing iron deposit. Variability in modal mineralogy was described by geostatistical parameters combined by a set of linear and trigonometric functions. The generated synthetic deposit model was used to develop a mine production plan to generate a simulated process feed. The process feed had detailed information required for beneficiation process simulation: modal mineralogy, chemical composition of minerals, grain size and specific gravity. The synthetic system was used to measure benefits that a geometallurgical program developed for real cases could provide, compared to production where only head grade is optimised. Twins were propagated into large, well-annealed crystals of a, iron-phosphorous and a, iron-molybdenum solid solutions. Strain fields caused by interaction of these twins were made visible by precipitation. These strain fields can be explained by assuming that transmitted and reflected plastic waves are created when a twin strikes an obstacle with high velocity. The twin front itself can be regarded as a shear wave that may be able to develop a one-dimensional shock front. The occurrence of {WO} fracture by the reflected stress is also discussed. The described effects were not found when twins propagated at lout velocity into disturbed crystals, for example, into crystals previously deformed by slip. DEFORMATION twinning leads to shearing of a crystal lattice under external load. The shear appears to be homogeneous over a large number of crystal layers. In a iron, shear occurs on the (112) planes and in the <1ll> directions. The formation of a twin proceeds by the movement of partial dislocations that change the stacking at the twinning plane.l, In the bcc lattice, this partial dislocation can be created by dissociation of a sessile a/2[111] dislocation that lies in the (112) plane: Cottrell and Bilby&apos;s spiral mechanism can explain the homogeneous shear, but has not been proven experimentally. Nevertheless, this mechanism can explain the possible high velocity of formation of a twin. In Cottrell and Bilby&apos;s model, as in other models of twinning or phase transformation, a much higher energy is required to spread the first stacking fault than to add new layers by further movement of the partial dislocations. The dislocations will therefore become accelerated proportional to the difference between the stress, tN, to nucleate and tp to propagate the twin. It has been assumed3,4 that tn is the stress required to make two partial dislocations of apposite sign pass for the first time. After the first layer of new stacking has been formed, the maximum stress is TN=Gb/4pd where G is the shear modulus, b is the Burgers vector of the partial dislocation, and d is their perpendicular spacing so that the amount of shear is S = b/d. From this formula, a value of 25 kg per mm2 has been estimated for twinning in Zn3. The measured values are smaller, but local internal stresses may help to provide the necessary stress. According to the 2010–2019 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident report database, 91% of reported ground control accidents in US longwall mines were caused by roof instability. Gateroads are subjected to significant changes in loading conditions from the development to the longwall abutment loading phases. When combined with thinly bedded shale roof, found in many US longwall coal mines, the design of efficient roof support becomes challenging. In previous work, the bonded block modeling (BBM) of roof by UDEC was validated against field extensometer measurements in a longwall entry roof at a 180-m depth of cover. The BBM was shown capable of capturing delamination and buckling of shale roof, one of the main roof instability mechanisms in longwall mines. This paper presents the recent findings on the roof-support interaction using BBM models of the same longwall entry. The effects of cable bolts, roof bolt density, and strap support on potential roof instability are studied. Results demonstrate the potential for BBM numerical models to help understand the complex roof and support system interactions and to assist with optimizing gateroad support systems.

Este artigo apresenta uma ferramenta de simulação computacional desenvolvida com o objetivo de auxiliar a adoção de melhores práticas de controle do forno durante períodos sem produção. O sistema desenvolvido permite simular as temperaturas do revestimento refratário de um forno de tratamento térmico de tubos em função da evolução da temperatura da atmosfera interna em diferentes cenários. O simulador foi desenvolvido baseado em um modelo matemático dinâmico validado, que utiliza um sistema de equações de transferência de calor discretizadas. Realizou-se a validação desta ferramenta computacional com a utilização de dados reais de uma campanha de medição de temperaturas. A comparação dos resultados apresentou pequeno erro entre simulação e valores reais coletados. A utilização desta ferramenta auxiliou a definição de estratégias de controle do forno durante períodos improdutivos, possibilitando redução do consumo de energia e retomada da produção com garantia da qualidade do produto.

A retort was constructed in which fine particles of shale, entrained in steam or other gaseous media, could be retorted at controlled temperatures and residence times and the effects of retorting variables upon quality and quantity of products could be determined. Studies of the effects of temperature upon products obtained from Green River (Piceance Creek Basin, Colo.) and Chattanooga (Tenn.) oil shales were completed. The feasibility of using the retort to process a shale of extremely high moisture content from Brazil also was investigated. Air was used as the entraining medium in a series of studies in which combustion of some of the products of retorting within the retort tube supplied a major portion of the process heat. In another series, shale oil from a conventional retort was cracked thermally to obtain data for comparison with results of retorting en-trained shale. In still another series the effects of rates of steam flow and solids feed upon rates of heat transfer from the furnace to the process stream were studied. Crushed quartz rather than oil shale was charged to the retort in this series. A study was begun in which raw shale was partly retorted, the products separated, and the partially retorted shale recharged to the retort. The shale was to have been recycled until it was completely retorted in an effort to improve oil yield by recycle retorting; however, the project was terminated before the investigation was completed.

It was shown through high-pressure experiments that tin loss by volatilizatim is necessary for the degrada-tion of the superconducting transition temperature of Nb,Sn associated with high-temperature annealing. Crystallochemical analysis of the degraded Nb3Sn showed that it constitutes a new phase with ordered niobium-site vacancies, created by the migration of niobium atoms to vaccnt tin sites. This new phase was found to form when 4 pct Nb-site vacancies were present. It has a transition temperature of 6&apos;K and a lattice parameter of 5.283A. A similar degradation effect was observed in Nb,Al. Its superconducting transition temperature dropped from 16.5" to 8" K following a high-temperature annealing. The superconducting temperature degradation in these 0-tungsten structure compounds is attributed to the disruption of the interchain d bonding by the periodic interruption of the niobium atom chains. By annealing the degraded Nb, Sn at 1000 C in nitrogen its normal superconducting behavior is restored most likely due to the incorporation of nitrogen atoms causing the elimination of the ordered vacancies. HANAK et al.&apos; have observed low superconducting transition-temperature values (T, - 9"K) in some NbsSn samples deposited from the vapor phase. They attributed such low T, values to disorder in the 0-tung-sten structure. Much lower T values (down to 5.6"K) were reported by Reed et al.zC for NbsSn samples annealed at high temperatures. These authors also attributed this degradation effect to disorder (random occupation of the A and B sites by niobium and tin) but pointed out that such disorder could be brought about (by high-temperature treatment) only in samples containing niobium in excess of the stoichiometric composition NbsSn. Both groups reported that the normal superconductivity behavior could be rever-sibly restored by appropriate heat treatment. Courtney et al., also found that degradation in NbsSn requires excess niobium brought about by the loss of tin during the treatment. However, these investigators proposed that the degradation is due to niobium-site vacancies resulting from the migration of the niobium atoms to the vacated tin atom sites. They did not consider the reversibility of the effect. The present study attempts to establish the nature of the above degradation phenomenon. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All compounds prepared for this investigation were made from the powders or filings of the elements which were intimately mixed, cold-pressed into a cylindrical pellet at approximately 50,000 lb per sq in., and then submitted to the desired heat treatment. The samples annealed under high pressure were placed in a MgO sample container which was mounted in a pyrophyllite tetrahedron designed for a tetra-hedral-anvil press. Details of the experimental arrangement are given elsewhere. This setup allowed heating at 1800°C or above under pressures in excess of 30kbars for 3 hr. The samples annealed in a vacuum were prepared in a high-temperature vacuum furnace which could reach temperatures up to 2400°C under a pressure of 2 x lo-&apos; Torr. For annealing in a reactive atmosphere, a quartz tube was placed in a clamshell furnace and the desired gas ambient passed through the tube. Lattice parameters were determined using a Debye-Scherer 114.6-mm camera. Cohen&apos;s method, programmed for the IBM 7094 computer, was used to calculate the lattice parameter from the measured d spacings. X-ray integrated intensity measurements were made on several samples. These samples were ground to -400 mesh and the powder mixed with a solution of collodion in amyl acetate. The mixture was poured into a depression milled in a bakelite disc. When the mixture dried, the surface of the disc was ground flat leaving a diffraction surface defined by the face of the disc. The disc was mounted in a Philips rotating specimen holder which allowed the rotation of the sample in the plane of the diffraction surface and the integrated intensity measured using a scintillation counter and a pulse-height analysis sys-tem. The superconducting transition temperatures were determined by means of self-inductance techniques.&apos; EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The Role of Tin Loss in the Degradation of Super-conductivity. The loss of tin during high-temperature annealing can be effectively suppressed by annealing under high hydrostatic pressures. Accordingly, a series of experiments were performed under pressures of approximately 30kbars. This pressure was the minimum under which high-temperature experiments could be safely performed in the particular pressure apparatus employed. Experiments were also designed to test high-pressure effects on the superconductivity behavior of NbJSn. The results of the high-pressure annealing experi-ments are summarized in Table I. Dr. Taylor, recently retired from the Colorado School of Mines as the Emeritus Ansell Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering, possesses over 45 years of expertise in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. His remarkable journey has seen him traversing the globe, from Canada to Egypt, contributing to pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, and mineral processing. Dr. Taylor’s portfolio encompasses lab work, pilot-plant projects, research, and process development across various metals, with an impressive array of authored papers, presentations, and nine patents to his name. A soughtafter consultant for over 20 companies and an esteemed expert witness, Dr. Taylor also led the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy at Colorado School of Mines. Under his guidance, more than 100 graduate students and post-docs have undertaken transformative research, while Dr. Taylor’s 45-year tenure as a university lecturer and the creation of 10 industryfocused short courses underscore his dedication to knowledge dissemination. Mercury is sometimes present in non-ferrous ores including gold, zinc, copper and lead. The selection and use of appropriate mercury abatement technology is critical for preventing its release to the environment during ore processing and to protect workers from mercury exposure. This paper presents a general decision-making process for mercury abatement technology selection for major emission sources in the gold industry. Mercury abatement can be accomplished through making process changes and/or by adding a process step to an existing system (i.e. "end-of-pipe control"). Advantages and limitations of the technologies along with waste / by-product management options are discussed through case studies of current operating mercury abatement systems.

THE man who forgot to mail the letters his wife gave him was for once justified at Tulsa, for envelopes, scratch paper and tablecloths were all in demand and through the two days of the meeting of the Petroleum Division, pencils were busy everywhere sketching out diagrams, drawing curves, figuring, or just taking notes. Those attending took the serious papers seriously, and discussion was wide-ranging but pointed. Despite the highly technical character of the papers presented, the chairmen had never to call for discussion; it was only necessary to say the paper was open for it. Both days the meetings lasted until after five in the afternoon, and it was enthusiastically voted to advance the meeting hour on Friday, in order to give more time. In all, ten papers, abstracts of which appeared in MINING AND METALLURGY for October, and copies of all but two of which were available in print, were presented in the two days, and no more could have been handled to advantage in that time. All but one of these dealt with problems of production engineering. That, the opening paper, was a general review of demand, supply and price in 1928, by Campbell Osborn, in which he argued for the price control of production and showed how the economic conditions determined development. J. Elmer Thomas presented a carefully prepared review of the same data, but came to somewhat different conclusions as to trend, and J. E. Pogue pointed out that in recent years it has been the manufacturing rather than the producing industries that have been notably profitable. These and other discussions were too long to be reported here, but will be printed in full later.

Selective carbothermic reduction is the preferred method of treatment of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust (listed hazardous waste, K061). The process maximizes the recovery of recyclable constituents by concurrent production of saleable zinc metal (directly condensed from the furnace off-gases), an innocuous, disposable iron oxide-rich slag, and some metallic iron. Results of a mineralogical investigation of a foaming slag produced during selective carbothermic reduction treatment of EAF dusts are presented. Wiistite and tricalcium silicate were identified by reflected light microscopy as the primary crystalline phases contained in a glassy matrix, but this technique failed to reveal any solid phases that could have significantly contributed to foam stability. It was concluded therefore, that the foam had been unstable, and had been primarily generated by copious gas evolution associated with the sudden reduction of the slag by an inadvertent addition of carbonaceous reductant. This is consistent with the susceptibility to foaming, when subjected to sudden excesses of carbon, of the slags produced by selective carbothermic reduction, because they still contain unreduced components such as iron oxide.

The Atlas Concentrator, reputedly the largest in the Far East today, is located on the island of Cebu in the Republic of the Philippines. It started operation on a 4000 TPD capacity in 1955. An expansion program, coupled with significant improvements both in the Crushing Plant and the Mil, made the Atlas Concentrator what it is today, treating about 14,000 tons of ore per day at a comparatively low cost of about $0.50 per ton treated. The Atlas Copper Mine is at present mainly an open pit operation, with ore supplied from two pits (Lutopan and Biga) north of the Concen¬trator. Development of an Underground Mine, situated on the main ore body at Lutopan, which will be a block caving operation, has been underway since 1963, and this underground mining operation is expected to b e in full production by the latter part of 1966.

Discovery of these unusual fluorite deposits was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines late in 1951, shortly after the first locations were made. A brief investigation of the deposits by the Bureau revealed seven principal outcrops of fluorite in two areas. The smallest outcrop continuously exposes massive fluorite over an area 25 by 55 feet; the largest outcrop is a similar exposure 180 by 240 feet. The deposits appear to be sharp-walled, low-angle-, tabular ore bodies in granite and are at least 10 feet thick. The Bureau investigation of the deposits included bulldozer strip-trenching, drilling and blasting rock cuts, and channel sampling across three of the largest outcrops. This sampling indicated an average grade of 97.2 percent CaF2 and 1.44 percent SiO2. Preliminary metallurgical tests on the ore indicate that it can be concentrated to acid-grade specifications by simple gravity methods. One laboratory test recovered 78.4 percent of the fluorite in a product containing 98.7 percent CaF2, 0.25 percent SiO2, and 0.10 percent Fe2O3.

"The processes for rare earth (RE) extraction include the decomposition of RE ore concentrate minerals, and the concurrent or subsequent leaching of the rare earth elements (REEs) from the decomposed minerals. Ore beneficiation concentrate can be decomposed by, for example, acid roasting, caustic cracking, and chlorination. The REEs can be selectively extracted. The nature of the REE extraction process depends on the concentrate mineralogy and the targeted products. Based on the experience of the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) in RE processing, this paper reviews REE extraction from the major RE minerals, including bastnaesite, monazite, xenotime, ion-adsorption clay, allanite, cerite, and eudialyte. An update on the development of RE extraction processes is also provided.INTRODUCTIONRE processing usually involves two operation stages, physical processing and chemical processing. Physical processing, also known as ore beneficiation, separates the RE minerals from gangue minerals to produce an RE mineral concentrate. Chemical processing, which includes extraction and separation processes, converts the RE mineral concentrate to an RE compound which is either an end product or an intermediate product for the subsequent production of individual REEs or other compounds. The RE extraction process uses one or more reagents to decompose the RE minerals and to leach the REEs into solution. The RE separation process uses solvent extraction, ion-exchange, or chemical precipitation to produce either rare earth oxides (REOs) or individual REEs. The authors have previously reviewed RE ore beneficiation processes (Zhang & Edwards, 2012). This paper focuses on extraction processes for a variety of RE minerals. Table 1 gives the chemical compositions of the RE minerals mentioned in this paper. The varieties of RE extraction methods use many different reagents. These reagents are mainly inorganic acids, alkalis, salts, and chlorine gas. The commonly used acids include sulfuric acid (H2SO4), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and nitric acid (HNO3). Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) are the most common alkalis. Salts include ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4), ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), and sodium chloride (NaCl). HCl is normally used to extract RE from silicate ore minerals such as allanite and gadolinite. The alkalis and H2SO4 are mainly used to leach REs from phosphate ores minerals like monazite and xenotime. The carbonate ore RE minerals such as bastnaesite can be treated using either acids or alkalis. HNO3 is mainly used to leach eudialyte and apatite. The extraction of REs from ionadsorption clay deposits uses salt solutions. Chlorine gas (Cl2) is exclusively used in the RE chlorination process which can be used to treat any RE minerals."

INTRODUCTION The introduction of 165-mm (61/z-in.) holes to underground mining operations has made possible the application of Canadian Industries Ltd&apos;s (CIL) vertical crater retreat (VCR) mining method, illustrated in the accompanying sketches. This unique and revolutionary new application of spherical charge technology (see the Appendix), when applied to primary stopes and pillar recovery, eliminates raise boring, slot cutting, and dilu¬tion of ore by backfill; greatly improves fragmentation; reduces labor and time requirements; eliminates uphole drilling and blasting; and minimizes or completely elimi¬nates damages by blasts to the walls and retreating backs of the stope or pillar. If vertical large diameter holes are drilled on a designed pattern from a cut over a stope or pillar to bottom in the back of the undercut, and spherical charges of explosives are placed within these holes at the calculated optimum distance from the back of the undercut and detonated, a vertical thickness of ore will be blasted downwards into the previously mined area. Repeating this loading and blasting procedure, min¬ing of the stope or pillar retreats in the form of horizontal slices in a vertical upwards direction until the top sill is blasted and the mining of a stope or pillar is completed. The VCR method is also applicable to drop raises and has the potential to replace all other raising methods under most circumstances. PILLAR RECOVERY Levack Mine Inco Metals Co., Ontario Div., provided the first opportunity for the method in pillar recovery. The Levack mine&apos;s high grade ore pillar No. 4800 on the 975-m (3200-ft) level was used for the production¬scale experiment (Figs. 1 to 3). The pillar was about 49 m (160 ft) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 to 26 m (65 to 85 ft) high. The mined area on both sides of the pillar was backfilled with a 1:30 cement:sand mixture. The pillar was removed in two phases. In phase 1, the standard uphole method was used to blast down the 18-m (60-ft) long section of waste from the bottom of the ore into the undercut. From the pillar&apos;s top sill, 165-mm (61/a-in.) holes were drilled downward into the pillar, and by measuring the depth of the holes, the results of the uphole blast were determined and roof line 1 was established. The bottom of each hole was plugged, then filled with sand to place the center of gravity of each spherical charge (loaded from the top sill) at a predetermined optimum distance from the horizontal free surface. The charges were then detonated. After detonation, both draw drifts were full of extremely well-broken material. The depth of each hole was measured again, and the plot of these depths re¬sulted in roof line 2. The same blasting procedure was repeated and the resultant new back elevation was marked by roof line 3. The poor results of the initial uphole blast at one location (notice the peak in area 1) appeared to influ¬ence the subsequent new backs. A third blast success¬fully evened the back, and resulted in roof line 4. An unblasted slab averaging 6.3 m (20.9 ft) thick remained below the pillar&apos;s top elevation as the final sill. In all three spherical charge blasts fragmentation of the blasted material was extremely fine. The backfill was fully exposed on both sides of the now-blasted pillar. The backfill remained undamaged and the ore was not diluted by sand. The remnants of all the 165-mm (61/2 -in.) holes remained clean and undamaged, and the holes had well-defined bottoms that could be easily measured and plugged. Each blast took down a 3.9 to 4.2-m (13 to 14-ft) thick horizontal slab of ore. Productivity was three times greater than that of the previously practiced cut-and-fill method. Since this was the first such experiment, blasting the remaining 6-m (20-ft) thick final slab was the sub¬ject of some deliberation. If the described method was repeated, we could have ended up with a 1.8-m (6-ft) thick sill unsafe to work on. O projeto visa o estudo da reatividade e da resistência do coque, combustível tradicionalmente utilizado na siderurgia, relacionando às diversas condições presentes no alto-forno. Para a realização da pesquisa, foram utilizadas amostras de coque de uma empresa siderúrgica nacional. O coque foi analisado através dos ensaios Coke Reactivity Index (CRI) e Coke Strength After Reaction (CSR) no Laboratório de Processos Metalúrgicos da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). Os testes foram realizados em tempos e temperaturas pré-determinados para simular as diversas zonas percorridas durante a descida do termo-redutor nos altos-fornos. Os resultados mostraram a viabilidade termodinâmica da gaseificação do coque a partir de 900°C, sendo possível calcular a energia de ativação da reação de Boudouard a 1100°C, e a correlação entre CRI e CSR coque.

A Metalurgia do Pó é um processo de conformação mecânica com um grande crescimento de sua aplicação no cenário industrial brasileiro, por possuir um vasto campo de aplicação que inclui, por exemplo, a fabricação de componentes automotivos, eletrodomésticos, ferramentas de corte e ferramentas elétricas. A sinterização é a fase mais importante do processo, no qual o pó já compactado é submetido a uma temperatura abaixo do seu ponto de fusão, obtendo como resultado um material com excelente acabamento, precisão dimensional e propriedades mecânicas. O trabalho apresentado tem como objetivo avaliar o comportamento do composto intermetálico denominada de Al12Si com a composição de 12% de Si, 1,14% de Ni; 1,08% de Mg; 0,45% Fe; 1,08 % de Cu e Al em balanceamento. Foi sinterizado com gás argônio para fazer um comparativo do mesmo material, porém utilizando uma atmosfera de nitrogênio. Tendo como objetivos específicos realizar levantamentos sobre a densidade, microdureza e metalografia apresentados em função das cargas aplicadas em cada uma das amostras. Comparar a influência do tratamento térmico T6 na dureza dos materiais em função da atmosfera de sinterização. A metalografia apresentou porosidade inerente ao processo, mas houve um acréscimo de microdureza entre as amostras produzidas em atmosfera com argônio e as produzidas com atmosfera com nitrogênio com uma variação de 59,51 HV-50g. para 72,30 HV-50g.

MR. TESCHER (Disaster at Dawson) : I move that you appoint a committee of nine members of this Institute to draft a set of resolutions that we can send out to all members of this Institute, to the mine officials in all four states, that might go towards preventing these disasters; that we reach all men, all mining men, mine officials of all kinds. I think we have enough brains to carry out a few suggestions of that kind. I think you are fully familiar or know men who are fully qualified to act on this committee. The only qualification that I have is to ask that Mr. Harrington be appointed a member of this committee. PRESIDENT WHITESIDE: You have heard the motion, and I believe it was seconded. Is there any discussion? That is a subject that really needs a great deal of thought. MR. LAMB: Things like that can&apos;t be handled in a minute. What Mr. Tescher suggested is all right, but to my mind, going into a great many of these different properties, seeing the conditions, such things hit pretty close to home. I would suggest that you put this off; lay it over until such time as the people who had the disaster have some time to think these things over. It is too soon to offer even a suggestion. Suggestions are all right, but there are no nine living men in the United States who can stand up or sit down and talk it over and give you any reasonable answer, in one hour or six months. First, you would naturally have to go down there and converse with the men who were at the camp at the time. You are all operators; all you operators would -like to talk it over today. You realize that anything that is good for the camp is always acceptable in disasters of this kind. I say, do it gracefully and not by publication. MR. TESCHER: I feel that the men present know these suggestions by heart and they don&apos;t have to discuss them. They know them instinctively and they know they will apply to any mine. It must be understood that if these suggestions are not carried out, they ought to be; and there is a motion before the house. PRESIDENT WHITESIDE: Mr. Murphy, you started to rise to your feet a moment ago. Have you anything to say on the subject? MR. MURPHY: I have just returned from a visit to Mr. Brennan. Mr. Brennan and I have worked together for twenty years. The manager of our company asked me to go down there and express his sympathy. Those things come to all men if they live long enough, in the coal business, and he wanted me to express to Mr. Brennan personally his sympathy and deep regret. What I had in mind when I started to rise, was to suggest that the Institute as a whole express its sympathy to Mr. Brennan. I don&apos;t think there is a man in Utah, Wyoming, Colorado or New Mexico who has done more in safety&apos; lines than Mr. Brennan, and it just seems bad luck that he had this disaster, and I am in hearty sympathy with the gentleman who spoke about not appointing this committee. I believe a resolution to Mr. Brennan would be very much better. JAMES DALRYMPLE: I am in sympathy with this gentleman here. I think it is going to hurt the feelings of those connected with the mines in which this disaster occurred. If you will give me the privilege for a few minutes, I will gladly express myself and the action that has been taken in the past by this Institute, and my opinion combined with a great many other opinions. And what I am going to say is going to be said by the-well, I am going to say it as I see it. I am going to say it not in an unfriendly spirit, but from a spirit of not undue criticism. I happen to be one of the original members who organized this Institute. I did what I could to obtain memberships. I remember very well when we had our first meeting that we had a very large membership. I think I have a photograph of the members which was taken on the steps of the Capitol building at that time.
