"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies. REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). "Design for reconstruction of the East Flagstaff traffic interchange project located in Flagstaff, Arizona posed particular challenges. The proposed design included construction of a nearly 50-foot tall mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall given rightof- way constraints and soft subgrade soils. The tight right-of-way, approximately 15 feet in certain locations, adjacent to existing structures limited the number of viable remedial alternatives to provide grade separation at the proposed bridge abutment without significant settlement. Preliminary analyses indicated the existing subgrade soils - consisting primarily of relatively soft silts and clays with decomposed pumice - would settle approximately 12 to 14 inches resulting in unacceptable wall deformation. Stone columns placed via vibratory methods (vibro-replacement) consisting of circular excavations which penetrate to firm bearing soils and which are filled with crushed stone were selected to densify the existing subgrade soils. The implemented mitigation measures helped limit settlement to less than one inch and allow for successful construction of the project. The project history - including site constraints, subsurface conditions, evaluation of remedial alternatives, stone columns methodology, and effectiveness of ground improvements - will be discussed.IntroductionThis paper describes the subsurface investigation performed for the reconstruction of the Business Route 40 (B-40) (Country Club Drive) and United States (US) 89 Traffic Interchange (TI) located within the city limits of Flagstaff, Arizona. This project is currently referred to as the East Flagstaff TI. The Project Site Vicinity Map is shown below.The former B-40/US 89 TI was considered ineffective in handling the current and projected volumes of traffic which transition from northbound (NB) B-40 to US 89 (both directions), as well as from southbound (SB) US 89 to SB B-40. The intent of the project was to reconstruct the TI to better accommodate projected traffic volumes. The project eliminated the existing ramps from both NB B-40 to SB and NB US 89. The new interchange includes a Tee intersection from B-40 to US 89. In order to accommodate this alignment, the profile of US 89 was raised several feet (on nearly the same as existing horizontal alignment) to match the elevated profile of B-40. B-40 was shifted just west of its current alignment to accommodate construction of a new, wider bridge structure which spans over Industrial Drive, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway, and old Route 66. South of the new bridge, B-40 transitioned back to the existing alignment just north of the I-40/B-40 TI. Within the project limits, both US 89 and B-40 were widened to three travel lanes in each direction."

"The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.1 km long water-diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, which was excavated by a 14.4 m diameter tunnel boring machine. The excavated rock types included limestone, sandstone, siltstone, shale and mudstone. Based on observations and measurements the overbreak was divided into four zones. Approximately half the tunnel length was excavated through the Queenston Formation, which locally is a shale to mudstone. Three of the four overbreak zones were within the Queenston. Zone 1 includes the formations above the Queenston Formation, Zones 2 and 4 are border regimes with little or no influence from St. Davids Buried Gorge and Zone 3 is the area influenced by the gorge. Zones 2 through 4 can be generally summarized as having overbreak as the result of stress induced spalling. Zone 2 marks the transition from slabbing at the Whirlpool contact in the stress shadow to spalling towards Zone 3. The behaviour of Zone 3 is interrupted from the typical high stress behaviour due to the presence of St. Davids Buried Gorge. As the tunnel passed from the gorge the high regional stresses induce spalling, which creates the typical notch shaped overbreak geometry of Zone 4.Three modelling approaches were used to back analyze the brittle failure process at the NTP: damage initiation and spalling limit, laminated anisotropy modelling, and ubiquitous joint approaches. Analyses were conducted for three tunnel chainages: 3+000, 3+250, and 3+500 m because the overbreak depth increased from 2 to 4 m. All approaches produced similar overbreak geometries to those measured. The laminated anisotropy modelling approach was able to produce overbreak depths and chord closures closest to those measured, using a joint normal to shear stiffness ratio between 1 and 2. The back analysis results were able to produce sets of stress and strength inputs for different sections of the tunnel at the transition from overbreak Zone 3 to 4. The back analysis procedure demonstrates the importance of including the anisotropic stiffness in the numerical modelling approach to correctly capture the overbreak geometry and deformations around underground excavations."

Since the late 1960's the Interstate Division for Baltimore City (IDBC) has been planning and developing the Interstate Highway System for the city to meet regional planning goals. The principal goals are to provide convenient access to the central business district and the port while diverting through traffic away from these congested areas. Interstate Route 95, an eight-lane highway carrying north-south traffic, has headed the city's priority list; during the 1970's its construction proceeded steadily from both east and west towards the harbor. Closing the final 8800-ft (2670-m) gap under the harbor will complete Interstate 95's construction. This final portion, known as the Ft. McHenry Tunnel project, will be built in nine construction contracts. Construction costs of the complete project are expected to exceed $700 million, making it the costliest single project in the Interstate Highway System. Full funding is being provided initially by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the Maryland Department of Transportation will re-pay the 10 percent local share from toll receipts within the first three years of operation.

Recent studies suggest that trace metals emitted by internal combustion engines are derived mainly from combustion of lubrication oil. This hypothesis was examined by investigation of the formation of particulate matter emitted from an internal combustion engine in the absence of fuel-derived soot. Emissions from a modified CAT 3304 diesel engine fueled with hydrogen gas were characterized. The role of organic carbon and metals from lubrication oil on particle formation was investigated under selected engine conditions. The engine produced exhaust aerosol with log normal-size distributions and particle concentrations between 105 and 101 cm-3 with geometric mean diameters from 18 to 31 nm. The particles contained organic carbon, little or no elemental carbon, and a much larger percentage of metals than particles from diesel engines. The maximum total carbon emission rate was estimated at 1.08 g h-1, which is much lower than the emission rate of the original diesel engine. There was also evidence that less volatile elements, such as iron, self-nucleated to form nanoparticles, some of which survive the coagulation process.

A Retomadora de Minério 342-RE-001 da Anglo American é um equipamento fundamental para a homogeneização do minério, porém este equipamento apresentava problemas de performance operacional desde início da operação da Planta Industrial de Barro Alto. Em agosto de 2015, as equipes de Engenharia e Manutenção realizaram um levantamento de todas as intervenções feitas no equipamento desde o início da operação em 2012, classificando estas intervenções em seis grupos, utilizando as ferramentas da metodologia Lean Six Sigma. Desta forma, foi possível realizar o Retrofit da roda de caçambas, manutenção geral nos rastelos, trucks e na lógica de automação que eram os sistemas que mais impactavam na estabilidade e disponibilidade física do equipamento.

Liquid incendiaries were burned within the interstices of several different types of sandstone cores to determine the technical feasibility of increasing sandstone permeability by this method. Fuel-oxidant mixtures were tested in 186 cores; six cores exploded when ignited. In virtually all instances, the explosion completely pulverized the sandstone cores. In addition n those cores damaged by explosions, 24 cores were fractured so severely that permeability tests were impossible. Although combustion gener¬ally increased the permeability, specific mixtures at given pressures were inconsistent in their ignition and burning behavior. Tests indicated that the heat of burning incendiaries significantly increased sandstone permeability. The improved permeability ratios were usually less than 2, but one was 10.3. Permeability alteration by other in situ methods was not as effective as that by flame propagation.

One of the challenges of mine planning is to determine the most cost-effective replacement time for aging equipment. The lifespan of equipment, such as haul trucks and shovels, deployed in mining operations varies due to the nature of the material and ground conditions in which it operates. For engineering economists dealing with aging equipment, the options become an economic trade-off between higher maintenance cost versus the cost of new equipment. The discount rate plays a significant role in this decision; the higher the rate, the longer the economically optimal lifespan. Therefore, the ultimate question is: ?How can the relationship between the discount rate and the economically optimal lifespan be expressed mathematically??

Underground mining environments are inherently hazardous and can lead to emergencies where effective rescue and self-escape become critical. Missouri University of Science and Technology is pioneering new technologies for effective self-escape. The rescuers and miners need to be trained in these new technologically driven environments. Previous research in fields like aviation, medical surgery, and oil and gas drilling has demonstrated the effectiveness of virtual simulation training, but the mining sector has yet to fully adopt advanced tools such as eye-tracking and immersive training modules. This research proposes a comprehensive training infrastructure incorporating these technologies to enhance situational awareness and decision-making during emergencies. The novelty lies in the application of advanced miner escape and communication technologies, specifically designed to monitor and enhance cognitive responses in high-stress situations. By leveraging these technologies, the proposed training infrastructure aims to prepare the next generation of underground miners and operators, by equipping them with the necessary skills to manage emergencies effectively.

"The effect of applied DC potentials on the bioleaching of a chalcopyrite concentrate in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is discussed. Copper dissolution was the highest at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE), while all the dissolved copper got cathodically deposited at a negative potential of -600mV (SCE). Electrobioleaching at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE) was established at different pulp densities as a function of time. The effect of applied potentials and electrolytic currents on the activity and growth of bacterial cells was assessed. Preadaptation of bacterial cells to the concentrate slurry and electrolytic growth conditions significantly enhanced copper dissolution. Electrochemical and biochemical mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching are illustrated with respect to oxidative dissolution and biocatalysis of anodic oxidation. IntroductionIn recent years, the bioleaching of low-grade chalcopyrite ores as well as their flotation concentrates has been receiving increased attention. Use of mesophilic bacteria such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in the bioleaching of chalcopyrite does not yield desirable copper extraction rates due to its easy passivation.Bioleaching of chalcopyrite using A. ferrooxidans has been reported to be very inefficient, and use of thermophilic bacteria at higher temperatures is recommended to improve its bioleaching rates. Bioleaching under imposed applied DC potentials or currents has been shown to enhance not only bioleaching kinetics but also to confer selectivity in mineral dissolution (Abhakumari, 1996; Chirpa Selvi and Natarajan, 1998; Natarajan, 1992a, b,c). Electrochemical principles governing electrobioleaching have been earlier illustrated (Jyothi et.al, 1989). The role of applied potentials on the activity and growth of A. ferrooxidans has also been studied (Natarajan, 1992b). Also, the electrochemical aspects of bioleaching of several sulfide minerals when present alone or in binary and ternary combinations have been reported (Jyothi et al., 1989). The electroleaching of copper-nickel concentrate (Natarajan et al., 1985) and electrobioleaching of sphalerite concentrates have already been studied (Selvi et al.,1998). However, it is possible to enhance the bioleaching rate of chalcopyrite in the presence of A. ferrooxidans under galvanic conditions in the presence of nobler minerals such as pyrite (Jyothi et al.,1989). Also, dissolution of chalcopyrite can be significantly enhanced under applied potential conditions. Ali Ahmadi and his coworkers recently studied the electrochemical bioleaching of chalcopyrite concentrates using moderate thermophiles (Ahmadi et al., 2010, 2011)."

In 2006 the Australian steel industry and CSIRO initiated an R&D program to reduce the industry’s net greenhouse emission by at least 50%. Given that most of the CO2 emissions in steel production occur during the reduction of iron ore to hot metal through use of coal and coke, a key focus of this program has been to substitute these with renewable carbon (charcoal) sourced from sustainable sources such as plantations of biomass species. Another key component of the program has been to recover the waste heat from molten slags and produce a by-product that could be substituted for Portland cement. This paper provides an overview of the low-emission Integrated Steelmaking Process, progress made over the past seven years and the program’s future direction which includes proposed demonstrations of the technologies developed including large scale piloting and full scale plant trials.

A technique is described for the solvent extraction of zirconium. In this method, zirconium has been extracted quantitatively from 0.005 M sodium salicylate solution at pH 2.5 - 3 using 0.01 M triphenylphosphine oxide dissolved in toluene as an extractant. Zirconium has also been recovered quantitatively from 0.2 M potassium thiocyanate solution, but extractions in nitric and hydrochloric acids (as media) were negligible. The resulting extracted metal ion has been stripped with sulfuric acid (0.5 M) and determined with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. This method has been applied successfully to achieve 95% recovery of zirconium from zircon concentrate.

Scattered outliers of the Chibougamau Formation and the more continuous Mistassini and Otish Groups lie unconformably on an Archean basement abutting the Grenville Front. All the Aphebian rocks are deformed and offset by faulting related to the Front. The older Chibougamau Formation is exclusively elastic in origin, whereas the two later, time-equivalent groups include carbonatedominated (Mistassini) and elastic (Otish) sequences. Known syngenetic mineralization within these formations is limited to various radioactive showings in the Mistassini and Otish elastics, and the iron formations of the upper Mistassini Group. Three distinct types of epigenetic mineralization occur within the sedimentary rocks; pitchblende fracture fillings in all types of rocks in the Otish Group, widespread Mississippi-Valley type galenasphalerite showings at certain levels in the Mistassini Group, and chalcopyrite-pyrite bearing veins in or near argillaceous horizons of the Mistassini Group and Chibougamau Formation. The Otish elastic basin is part of a large area of the central Ungava peninsula which contains a variety of radioactive showings, the most promising being of the unconformity type, The final control for many individual showings appears to be local physico-chemical changes within faults and fracture zones. The overall structural control is in part supplied by the faulting episode related to the Grenville Front, which in turn limits the mineralization to the depth zone appropriate for open fracturing. The lead-zinc showings exhibit a strong stratigraphic control as well as close ties to secondary porosity developed by f aulting. The ore solutions were probably derived during the low grade metamorphism of the formations. Chalcopyrite- pyrite veins have provi ded the only mine production (Icon Mine) to date. They appear later than the low-grade metamorphic fluid circulation, and deposition is related to favourable structures and stratigraphy. The veins are clearly related to major faults. Thus, whereas stratigraphic settings appropriate to individual types of deposits are important, an overall structural setting may be demonstrated for a wide range of mineralizations. Detailed structural interpretations of individual showings may be the most fruitful pursuit in developing a concrete prospecting model.

Coal is the prime source of energy in India. It now contributes to about 55% of the total power generation and will continue to have its major share in the energy mix of the country in the foreseeable future. Thermal coals of India, known for their wide variations in nature and categorized as difficult to wash due to their typical mineral matter association with the organic matrix, need suitable beneficiation technique for quality upgrade for improving the overall economics, efficiency and pollution free power generation. A non-coking high-ash coal, collected from Vasundhara open cast mine of the Ib Valley Coalfield, Orissa, has been characterized along with its different fractions obtained in the process of beneficiation for distribution of minerals using FTIR, XRD and ash analysis. The raw coal was fractionated by size as well as by density. It has been observed that ash yields and mineralogical composition (found to be mainly kaolinite and quartz) have no appreciable change in different size fractions, indicating homogeneous distribution of minerals in the coal matrix. However, for the different density fractions the mineral composition and ash yield have significant variations. The quartz content of the beneficiated coal visualized with 34% ash yield, as mandated by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) for the use of coal in power plants is reduced to half of that of the raw coal. As quartz is the most abrasive mineral in coal, reduction of its proportion obviously signifies considerable reduction of wear of power plant machinery when beneficiated coal is fed to utility boiler for generation of power. The authors discuss the cooperative efforts by Minnesota Ore. Operations and Research; from the earlier development, testing and installation of fine shear screens in the Minntac Step III concentrator to the most recent testing and operating data that has resulted in the installation of Derrick Multifeed sandwich deck screens in Minntac Steps I and II. Pilot-plant test results that were obtained at the Coleraine, Minnesota Research Laboratory are also reported and demonstrate the effects of feed rate and feed percent solids on sandwich screen performance with two sizes of Minntac fine screen feed.

Discussion of the paper of GEORGE S. RICE and H. H. CLARK, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2563 to 2571. NORMAN V. BRETH,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-It was my privilege to visit in the last two months on behalf of the U. S. Bureau of Mines 10 mines where electric shot-firing systems controlled from outside the mine are installed. I will describe briefly what I saw in some of these mines, which are located in Utah, New. Mexico, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Kansas. At a mine in Utah, 230-volt alternating current is used to fire the shots, which is taken from a small transformer in the substation. The shot-iring circuit is independent of all other wires and is tested for grounds every day. There are no lightning arresters on the firing circuit. Porcelain insulators are used inside of the mine, and glass outside. The switches are situated as follows: One in the substation, one in, the shot-firer's cabin, two at each cross entry; where the shot-firing circuit crosses the trolley wire a switch is placed on either side of the entry in series with the shot-firing circuit. The miners are checked in and out of the mine. The coal is undercut and is shot down with permissible explosive, the shots being connected in multiple. There are 75 to 110 shots fired each day. A great many times there are no missed shots. If not more than two or three are missed they are left until next day. The fan is kept running at full speed when the shots are fired. The shot-firing switch is closed only once and the whole mine is shot at once. At another mine in Utah, power wires are used for shot-firing circuits; 500-volt, direct current is used to fire the shots. The only sizes of wire used outside of the power wires are Nos. 8 and 14 B. & S. gauge. The return is connected to the pipe lines and track. Porcelain insulators are. used inside of the mine.

Gold is mobilized and precipitated in a wide variety of environments ranging from those of weathering and biological phenomena, to pluton emplacement to deep metamorph ism . But it appear that pervas ive leaching of large rock volumes fo llowed by the focussed di charge of typically low salin ity flu ids is frequently involved. There are great gaps in our knowledge, particula rly with re pect to gold in very high temperature fl uids generated at near Moho depths. But uch flu id may play an important part in Archaean pluton associated lode gold deposits whe re ultra high temperature fluids, rich in C02-CO-COS, may be associated with magma underplating and crustal assi mil ation processes (sag subduction) associated with very den e ult ramafic magma . Other environment with great potential include those of major thru t fau lt and strike slip fa ult s where large quant ities of fluids are mobilized .
