"Spent auto-catalyst is a promising secondary resource of platinum group metals (PGMs), which are being extensively used in automobiles catalytic converters to control the hazardous gaseous emissions (CO, NOx and hydrocarbons). Several pyro or hydrometallurgical routes has been employed to recover PGMs from such spent materials but there is no proper process for recovering the other constituents metals. Therefore, it causes the loss of other major constituents like, Al and Mg along with rare earth metal Ce. In the present study, we investigate the dissolution of Al and Mg using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) roasting followed by a sulfuric acid (H2SO4) leaching; thereby concentrating the PGMs and Ce in leached residues. The effect of roasting temperature, time and amount of NaOH were varied. Subsequently, the dissolution behavior of metals in H2SO4 as a function of acid concentration was investigated from the roasted samples. At an optimal condition for roasting at 600°C with 1:1 NaOH-to-catalyst ratio and 60 min duration, the maximum of Al and Mg were dissolved in 1 M H2SO4 solution at ambient temperature (~25°C). Thus obtained leached residues containing enriched PGMs and Ce content can be treated separately for the recovery of these high-value metals.INTRODUCTION Spent auto-catalyst has been considered as a potential resource for recovering the platinum group metals (PGMs) (Jha et al., 2013). The commonly used auto-catalyst is made of cordierite (2MgO.2Al2O3.5SiO2) in which the chloro complexes of PGMs are impregnated onto the surfaces of porous washcoat of alumina substrate (Aberasturi et al., 2011). The average concentration of PGMs in ore are 2-4 g/ton for Pt, 7-2 g/ton for Pd and 0.2-0.5 g/ton for Rh, whereas, an individual catalytic converter weighing about 1 - 2 kg contains on average 1.56 g Pt, 0.62 g Pd and 0.156 g Rh (Upadhyay et al., 2013). Moreover, recovery of PGMs from spent auto-catalyst offers other advantages like, simple process, low cost and less pollution, as compared to recovery from primary resources (Dong et al., 2015).Therefore, technologies to recover PGMs from spent auto-catalyst has become attractive in the recent past and their recycling contribution has been accounted for 35% Pt, 26% Pd and 36% Rh of the quantity consumed in the production of auto-catalysts (Johnson Matthey, 2016)."

"A discussion of the design, challenges and successes associated with the commissioning of the gravity recovery circuit at Canada’s newest open pit gold mine - Atlantic Gold’s Moose River Consolidated Project in Nova Scotia, Canada is presented. An overview of the project, its historical significance and overall flowsheet is provided with special focus given to the design and selection of the gravity circuit equipment including the scalping screen, gravity concentrators and the novel intensive leaching technology selected for the project. The performance of the gravity circuit is benchmarked against the feasibility study process design specifications and the outcomes are discussed. Challenges encountered during commissioning are also presented, including the use of third-party automation and the effects of screen sizing on overall gravity circuit performance. Mechanical modifications made to the Sepro Leach Reactor for the Moose River project are also discussed. A detailed technical review of the mechanical and operational aspects of the Sepro Leach Reactor is provided with key operational data on leach times, recoveries, reagent usage, solid-liquid separation, pregnant solution quality and its influence on bullion purity.INTRODUCTION Atlantic Gold Corporation’s Moose River Touquoy Mill in Nova Scotia, Canada was commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2017 with commercial production declared in March of 2018. The 2 Mtpa process plant uses a conventional, gravity-CIL process. This site was previously mined in the 1870s. Interest waned in the early 1900s but resumed in the 1930s and the mine was brought back into production in 1935 until an underground mine collapse in 1936. This mining district became famous after CRBC radio commenced a ground breaking, around the clock, broadcast of the rescue operations. Over 100 million people listened to the broadcast from Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. These broadcasts changed radio, transforming it from a medium for music to on the spot, breaking news reporting. The mill was constructed by Ausenco on a fixed price EPC contract in the historic Moose River gold mining district, 95 km north-east of Halifax by road. The mill will process ore from the adjacent Touquoy pit for the first 5+ years of operation; after the Touquoy reserves are exhausted, the mill will process ore trucked 37 km from the Beaver Dam deposit for an additional 5 years."

Oil from shales has long been a source of fuel in foreign countries; however, in the fuel economy of the United States this source is classed as a reserve for future needs. In fad, shale oil has never been produced here in quantities necessary to establish oil-shale utilization as a sustained industry. The first known resources of stored energy that man endeavored to utilize were probably wood and water, and from these he directly obtained heat and power, respectively. With the evolution of man came the search for and the development and use of other natural fuel resources, the series progressing through the solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels until today those of one type can be converted into another, depending upon the use for which they are intended. The most important fuels are those that appear naturally in the most concentrated, conveniently obtainable, and usable forms. With the discovery of each new and more concentrated fuel there has been an appreciable increase in the importance of and number of devices for converting these fuels into energy.

"Discrete-element method (DEM) modelling is a powerful tool for studying particulate systems within the mineral processing industry. DEM simulations were conducted to investigate the power draw, load behaviour, and impact energy profile of an experimental ball mill under different milling conditions. The variables considered were mill rotational speed (percent critical speed), ball size, and lifter face angle. The simulation results indicated that the grinding efficiency would be enhanced by using 80% critical speed, 30 mm ball diameter, and 45° lifter face angle. These findings can be useful in guiding actual ball milling tests involving an ore sample.RÉSUMÉ La modélisation par méthode des éléments distincts (MED) est un outil puissant qui permet d’étudier les systèmes particulaires au sein de l’industrie de traitement des minerais. Des simulations par MED ont été menées de façon à étudier le profil de la consommation énergétique, du comportement de la charge et de l’énergie de rupture d’un broyeur à boulets expérimental dans diverses conditions de broyage. Parmi les variables prises en compte figuraient la vitesse de rotation du broyeur (vitesse critique en pourcentage), la taille des boulets et l’angle de coupe de la cornière élévatrice. D’après les résultats de la simulation, on pourrait améliorer l’efficacité de broyage en utilisant une vitesse critique de 80 %, un diamètre de boulet de 30 mm et un angle de coupe de 45 ° de la cornière élévatrice. It consumes approximately 5% of the electricity produced worldwide and more than 50% of the total energy used in mineral processing plants (Pokrajcic, 2010). Among all the comminution stages, ball milling is one of the most energy intensive processes. In ball mills, rotational movement provides the rise of the load and the media that are projected and impact on the mill shell at lower angular displacement, resulting in particle breakage. Ball mills are able to reduce particle size over a relatively wide range of particle sizes. This explains their wide applicability in research laboratories and the mineral processing industry."

"As part of LITHOPROBE's multidisciplinary earth science research program to understand the evolution of the North American continent, studies have been undertaken in a number of key areas in Canada. In the Trans-Hudson Orogen of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, LITHOPROBE results require re-evaluation of tectonic models related to its origin. In the Abitibi greenstone belt of Quebec and Ontario, results indicate a more complex evolution for the southern Superior province, one that links with the development of gold and massive sulphide deposits. As part of the program, the seismic reflection profiling method is being adapted for the mining industry. Three examples demonstrate the subsurface information that can be obtained. In Noranda, the base of the volcanic Blake River group is imaged and reflectivity is tied to geology through well logs; in Matagami, the zone of mineralization is shown to be downdropped along a majorfault; in Sudbury, a new structural model is developed, one that shows marked asymmetry at depth and indicates that some ore-bearing units on the margins of the igneous complex may be repeated at depth. IntroductionLITHOPROBE is Canada's national, collaborative earth science research project, established to develop a comprehensive understanding of how the North American continent has evolved. Ten transects, or study areas, were chosen to investigate pivotal geological features to their deep lithospheric roots. They span the country from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans and from the U.S. border to the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and geological time from four billion years ago to the present. A multidisciplinary approach, which is spearheaded by seismic reflection techniques, is essential to developing complete interpretations and outstanding scientific results. LITHOPROBE also has pioneered the use and demonstrated the value of using reflection technology to determine subsurface geology in mining camps.This paper provides an overview of the transects and their significance for the tectonic evolution of North America. Two specific examples demonstrate how we detennine present three-dimensional lithospheric structure and past geotectonic processes which formed it. The application of the reflection method to imaging complex structures in ""shallow"" crystalline rocks has been developed with funding and other support from the mining industry and provincial geological surveys. Sustaining funds, however, are derived from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and Geological Survey of Canada. Emphasis has been placed on developing deeper penetrating tools for exploration of deeply buried, but economically retrievable, mineral resources near existing mines, where an expensive infrastructure already is in place. Three examples, Rouyn-Noranda in western Quebec, Matagami in northwestern Quebec and Sudbury in northeastern Ontario, illustrate these developments."

A complexidade do formato do molde de beam blank aumenta a importância de se compreender o comportamento do fluxo no interior do mesmo. Neste estudo verificou-se a influência da profundidade de imersão e da velocidade de lingotamento sobre as características de fluxo em um molde de beam blank alimentado por duas válvulas tubulares. Os resultados das simulações matemáticas foram coerentes com os resultados do modelamento físico. A velocidade de espalhamento do jato na região do flange é maior que na alma e este fator pode acarretar na solidificação irregular da pele ao longo da seção transversal. A profundidade de penetração do jato variou entre 66cm e 77cm. A intensidade média de flutuação do menisco foi de 0,22mm, sendo a flutuação máxima encontrada de 0,85mm. Com base nos resultados obtidos, os parâmetros de operação sugeridos são: profundidade de imersão igual a 75mm e velocidade de lingotamento máxima de 1m/min.

The scheme of rehabilitation of surface plant commenced in 1936, included the provision of improved and more hygienic changing and bathing facilities for the employees.At that time the Thompson's Shaft section of the British Mine was being prepared for a resumption of operations, and it was decided to repair and re-equip the existing building. Thus any new scheme adopted could be given a thorough trial, and the proved arrangement used as a basis for the contemplated new main changehouse on the North Section.Investigations were carried out to determine the most suitable arrangement for the Thompson's Shaft changehouse, to provide for a total of 120 men, with particular regard to the internal fittings and fixtures. Also, as the mining conditions were such that a large proportion of clothes worn underground by miners, etc., were wet by the end of the shift, the problem of drying these clothes in the availaole time from a man coming off shift to his commencing again some sixteen hours later was one of the most important to be dealt with.The changehouses in use on the North mine section of the lease were provided with racks around the walls for the men to hang their street clothes on, and a section was partitioned off to house the mine clothes and their drying facilities. The actual drying was carried out by means of hanging the wet clothes over racks between which ran pipe coils heated by means of hot water circulated from the hot water boiler supplying the showers.This method had proved to be far from satisfactory for several reasons, the main objections being:-

No processo de fabricação de aço, o distribuidor possui grande importância na questão limpeza inclusionária, principalmente, quando se trata da produção de aços limpos (clean steel). As inclusões podem afetar negativamente as propriedades mecânicas e metalúrgicas do aço. Estudos realizados em modelos físicos e/ou matemáticos vêm sendo aplicados com intuito de propor medidas que melhorem a capacidade do distribuidor na remoção de inclusões presentes no aço. Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal qualificar o escoamento de um distribuidor e quantificar a remoção de inclusões do mesmo. Um modelo físico de um distribuidor de lingotamento contínuo de tarugos construído em acrílico e que respeita a similaridade de Froude e Reynolds é utilizado para os ensaios. A quantificação das inclusões é realizada por meio de um ensaio que envolve um sistema de injeção de partículas de polietileno na entrada no distribuidor e outro sistema de coleta dessas partículas na saída do distribuidor no qual as amostras coletadas, posteriormente, são secadas e pesadas. Com os resultados obtidos pretende-se compreender o efeito dos parâmetros propostos sobre a remoção de inclusões e permitir a utilização de uma ferramenta capaz de avaliar a qualidade de aços no que se refere à passagem de inclusões na saída do distribuidor.

The filling and solidification of an industrial scale composite casting has been simulated to investigate the re-melting of the outer shell material during casting. Production of a composite requires a two-step casting process which includes centrifugal casting of a hard outer shell material and subsequent conventional ingot casting of a tough core material into the shell-mold assembly. During casting of the core, a thin layer of the shell material re-melts and mixes with the core material producing a bonding layer of intermediate composition. The present numerical model employs the volume of fluid method and an enthalpy-porosity technique to couple the filling of the core material and re-melting of the shell material. The interface between the two materials is tracked and can be used as a guide to examine the extent of melting and, to some degree, mixing of the two fluids and species diffusion.

Previously the authors showed that the Gilvarry equation correctly describes the distribution of fragment size in single fracture, provided the exoclastic particles showing original surface of the specimen are removed from the distribution. In the present work this conclusion has been strengthened in two respects. First, it has been shown that the existence of two peaks in the differential distribution for the endoclastic particles, corresponding to the effect of surface and volume flaws in the interior of the specimen, can be demonstrated from the average of data for a large number of specimens. Second, it has been shown by means of a Coulter counter that data obtained from specimens fractured in gelatin display the behavior at fragment sizes approaching 1 p which is demanded by the limiting form of the Gilvarry equation in this case. In previous work, a rigorous derivation of the proper distribution function for fragment size in single fracture of a brittle solid has been given by Gilvarry,' based on a closely defined physical model and deduced strictly by the laws of probability. Experimental work has been reported by Gilvarry and Berg-str~m,~ confirming the theory in its broad outlines. Subsequently, Gilvarry and Bergstrom extended the theoretical discussion to include comminution and presented experimental data bearing on this point. They have described further experimental results for the case of single fracture recently. The experimental evidence regarding single fracture was rather convincing. However, it was based on only five specimens for which fragment sizes were determined by sieve analyses and three for which measurements in the finer sizes were made on a Coulter counter. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the experimental results as obtained by means of both sieve analyses and the Coulter technique. In the former case, sufficient specimens are included so that the average data should vield ac- curately the detailed behavior of the distribution function for the coarser fragment sizes. In the latter case, measurements for the finer sizes are reported which correspond to single fracture more closely than prior results and fill a lacuna left in the experimental verification. In addition, an extension of the theory given recently bGilvarry for the case of fracture of a two-dimensional solid will be outlined, and experimental results obtained by him will be discussed.6 THREE-DIMENSIONAL CASE Gilvarry' has shown that the Schuhmann size modulus is a measure, in a sense specified later, of the number of activated edge flaws in a specimen undergoing single fracture. Single fracture is defined as that resulting from a single instantaneous application of energy, such as the blow of a hammer whose motion is halted when fracture begins. Plural fracture consists of a short sequence of single fractures, as in a jaw or gyratory crusher; multiple fracture obtains when many applications of energy are made, as in a ball mill. The Griffith flaws associated with fracture of a specimen are flaws occurring within the volume of the body, on the new surfaces created within its interior and on the new edges (intersections of two surfaces) within the body. Fracture proceeds by activation of flaws in the volume of the specimen, in the fracture surfaces throughout its interior, and in the edges produced by intersection of fracture surfaces. If all the flaws and all groups of flaws are distributed at random, independently of other flaws or groups thereof, it has been shown by Gilvarry that the distribution function for fragment size has the form of a Poisson distribution. The fraction y, by weight or volume, passing a sieve of mesh size x is given by where k is an average spacing of activated edge flaws, j2 is an average amount of surface containing one activated surface flaw and i3 is an average volume corresponding to an activated volume flaw. SILICON, unfortunately, is not in the same category as some other metals with respect to the absolute value of the highest purity material prepared. Tucker, in England, and Becket, in this country have devel-oped procedures for the purification of silicon, and Becket's process has made industrially available silicon of a purity of 99.8 per cent or better. However, even the term "silicon metal" may be a paradox to some people, although not more so than the term "amorphous" as applied to silicon. These terms come from commerce, and "metal" is used to distinguish industrially high-purity silicon from ferrosilicon, silicon-aluminum, and other high-silicon alloys. Alloys of iron and silicon with 95 per cent Si or less are known as ferrosilicon, with a designation of silicon content where necessary, and the terns "silicon metal" is invariably applied to the grades containing 96 per cent Si and higher. The Becket method of purification was referred to in a monograph on the Alloys of Iron and Silicon, and the Tucker procedure was described in some detail in that publication.1 In order to get silicon of still higher purity, a sample, prepared by the Becket method, analyzing 99.84 per cent Si, 0.020 Fe, 0.016 Al, 0.005 Ca, 0.025 C, 0.033 per cent 02, 0.006 H2, 0.006 N2, and 0.001 per cent Mn, was crushed to pass a 100-mesh sieve said further purified by a modification of Tucker's procedure. This modification differs from Tucker's method in that after treatment the 100-mesh alloy was centrifuged to remove the last traces of acid. Our directly determined analysis of this purified sample shows: Si, 99.952 per cent; Fe, 0.009; Al, 0.012; Ca, 0.003; C, 0.006; or 99.982 per cent. Silicon by difference equals 99.97 per cent. The variation between silicon by difference and silicon as directly determined is important. Although Tucker mentions the amount of insoluble matter in commercial silicon both before and after his treat-ment, he does not mention the existence of carbon in the alloy; neverthe-less, lie reports silicon by difference. Assam cancer care foundation (ACCF) proposed the construction of hospitals and related facilities across 18 locations in the state of Assam-India. Tezpur is one among the 18 locations of Assam with high seismic risk. The strata at the site are comprised of mostly fine silty sands of lower SPT- N values. The water table is also encountered and ranging from 1 m to 2 m below EGL. Since the site lies in seismic zone V as per IS 1893, detailed liquefaction analysis is carried out for all five boreholes and indicates that soil is liquefiable and ground improvement is inevitable up to a depth of 15 m below existing ground level. To mitigate the liquefaction potential and enhance the seismic performance of the soil, ground improvement using stone columns by Wet top feed Vibro-replacement method is proposed. Also, the differential settlements can be avoided effectively under the raft foundation with Vibro Stone Columns. In this paper, field test validation results such as Pre and post-SPTs and ECPTs to access the extent of ground improvement, along with other information adopted in this project presented.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, devised a flotation technique for upgrading chromite in chromium ores and gravity concentrates. The technique consisted of cationic flotation of chromite from a slime-free pulp acidified to pH 2.5 or lower using H2S04 modifier. Flotation results showed that ore containing serpentine as the primary gangue mineral was more amenable to concentration by this technique than ore containing the readily floatable olivine as the primary gangue mineral. Rougher flotation of a chromite ore containing abundant serpertine increased the grade form 19 to 41 percent Cra03 at a chromite recovery of 89.6 percent. Rougher flotation of ore containing abundant olivine upgraded the chromite from 23.4 to 29.6 percent Cr203 at a recovery of 89.4 percent. The technique was also applied to chromite gravity concentrates to further upgrade chromite and to reject silicates. Flotation of a gravity concentrate containing 40.9 percent Cr203 and 4.4 percent SiO2 recovered 90 percent of the chromite in cleaner products containing 44.9 percent Cr203 and 0.63 percent Si02. The combined recovery by gravity and flotation was 87 percent. An economic evaluation of this technique will be undertaken to deter-mine its feasibility for commercial use.

ABSTRACT The sensitivity of sulphide minerals towards oxidation depends on the mineralogical makeup and nature of sulphide ores. This paper focuses on chalcopyrite behaviour in a nickel-copper sulphide- ore matrix that was aged in the mine-site stockpiles. Results of collectorless, collector-induced flotation and recovery by size are presented following a discussion of XPS analysis that was used to gain insight into oxidative alteration of chalcopyrite’s surface chemistry. Chalcopyrite maintains its high flotation activity despite exposure to weeks of oxidative conditions. It is concluded that chalcopyrite is quite tolerant to stockpile oxidation due to various factors related to alteration of its surface chemistry.

"Monitoring of all the waste streams from Falconbridge's Sudbury Operations to determine whether they meet the required standards, has been performed for many years. By 1969, however, the number of samples being collected had become so large that a complete revision of the existing systemwas necessary. Sites previously designated by name only, were numbered, clearly marked on the ground and on maps which were circulated to all concerned. The types of pollutants analyzed were determined and specified for each sampling location and a chemical analysis report form was designed. The sampling schedule has been computerized to produce a periodic listing of the samples to be taken and the analyses required.An area map showing sampling sites, chemical analysis report form, spill report and a computer print-out example are shown and explained.EVOLUTION OF FALCONBRIDGE'S WASTEWATER. MANAGMENT SYSTEMFalconbridge Nickel Mines employs some 4500 people, operates nine mines, four mills and a smelter in the Sudbury basin. The operations are geographically fragmented into four widely separated locations, the Falconbridge operations east of Sudbury and the Onaping operations in Levack Township being the two largest of the four. The Lockerby area located to the west and the Lindsley Mine just north of Sudbury are now under development. The magnitude, the diversity and nature of the operations are such that constant vigilance is needed to prevent inadvertent damage to the environment. The purpose of this paper is to describe the information system used to monitor and control waste-water disposal on Falconbridge's properties to help ensure the maintenance of effluent standards satisfactory to the Ontario Water Resources Commission (OWRC) and to the Ontario Department of Health."

A aplicação de ligas de NiTi como biomateriais exige que sua superfície tenha um excelente acabamento final, para garantir a alta resistência à corrosão e a biocompatibilidade. O polimento eletrolítico é um processo capaz de diminuir as imperfeições da superfície, sem alterar as propriedades do material, e de formar uma fina camada protetora de TiO2. Nesse estudo, foram realizados eletropolimentos em fios superelásticos e com memória de forma, usando dois eletrólitos ácidos distintos. A partir dos resultados obtidos, foi possível concluir que a solução de ácido sulfúrico produz superfícies mais homogêneas do que o de ácido perclórico, para os mesmos tempos de polimento, e se apresenta como uma boa alternativa para o tratamento superficial de ligas superelásticas e martensíticas de para sua aplicação como biomateriais.

The Birmingham district first produced steel from Alabama hematite ores in 1899. Since then, the district generally produced more than 6.0 million gross tons of ore a year to the late 1950's. Production has declined since then to an annual rate of about 1.5 million gross tons. Reserves calculated for the district are sufficient to last many years. Mining in the district is now confined to Woodward Iron Company's Vance and Pyne mines. The rocks exposed consist of about 15,000 feet of consolidated Paleozoic sediments with a thin veneer of unconsolidated Cretaceous sediments in the Vance area. The district is characterized by a distinctively parallel and subparallel, slightly arcuate series of faults and joint systems. In view of available information, it seems reasonable to conclude that the Birmingham red ores are of sedimentary origin, modified to a small extent by diagenetic replacement after original deposition.
