Brine produced from subsurface formations may be employed successfully instead of fresh water as a flooding, medium in the secondary recovery of oil. The feasibility of this substitution has been proved in the shallow "shoestring" area of eastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, where the supply of fresh water often is limited. In this procedure all brine produced with the oil is returned to the formation and thus is prevented from contaminating streams and fresh-water supplies. This report includes a detailed description of a "flood project" in eastern Kansas studied by the Bureau of Mines. In an attempt to determine whether brine, when handled properly, can be used as effectively as fresh water in flooding oil from partly depleted formations, an analysis was made of all known conditions that influence flooding.

Regarding the March 1991 ME technical paper by De Souza and Moore: For more than a decade since my February 1981 article on how to use modern metric, which SME-AIME had decided to do, I have monthly pointed out metric errors to the editors. In part, I do this because there has been no action to al low editors to fix figures and tables or to allow them to require authors to do so. The latest resulting atrocity provokes this discussion of vibrating drill handle units being stated in decibels.

South African discard coal fines and K₂CO₃ blends were heated in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln to produce ashes for H₂SO₄ leaching tests. The optimized H₂SO₄ leaching conditions of 6.12 mol.dm³ (M) H₂SO₄, solid to liquid ratios 1:5 and 1:10, and 80°C for 8 hours were used. K₂CO₃ was added to increase the dissolution efficiency of K. The objective was to determine if the Al present in metakaolinite (Al₂O₃.2SiO₂), the Al, K, and Ti in the alumino-silicate glasses, and the Ti in rutile (TiO₂) in the ashes could be selectively dissolved in H₂SO₄. XRF results show that the ashes formed at 700°C dissolved more efficiently (87% Al, 89% K and 23% Ti) compared to the ashes formed at 1050°C. This can be attributed to the presence of Al₂O₃.2SiO₂, K₂CO₃ melt, K₂CO₃ remnants, KAl(SO₄)₂, and K-aluminosilicate glass in these ashes. XRD results indicate that the ashes prepared at 1050°C contained anorthite (CaAl₂Si₂O₈), microcline (KAlSi₃O₈), pseudomullite (Al₂O₃.SiO₂), and silicon spinel (2Al₂O₃.3SiO₂), which are either insoluble or only sparingly soluble in H₂SO₄. These minerals resulted in the lower dissolution efficiencies of Al and K. Based on the high dissolution efficiencies of Al and K for the ashes produced at 700°C, coal fines blended with K₂CO₃ could possibly be utilized as feedstocks for the production of aluminium(III), potassium(I), and titanium(IV) and a sulphate-containing leach liquor. Furthermore, the environmental issues and costs associated with the handling and disposal of large volumes of coal fines will also be resolved.

Mining had a very considerable effect on the country's development. The visual evidence remaining is an integral part of New Zealand history. Early mining for manganese and copper in the 1840s was succeeded by alluvial gold rushes. These gave way to hard rock extraction, hydraulic elevation and dredging. Coal mining dating from the 1850s was fairly widespread. Other minerals were obtained on a small scale. Manufacture of mining machinery stimulated industrial engineering enterprises. Schools of mines played a significant part in advancing technical skills and several remain as museums. Surviving mine structures and site relics are part of the industrial heritage signifying the technological and economic development of a small isolated nation. Some of these are described. Identification, recording and preservation where practicable is advocated.

This paper will describe the experience gained and explain the deductions made from the phenomenon of the great squeeze which occurred at Brule Mines. The first indication of the commencement of the squeeze was the breaking of posts on the high-side rib of the slope. At first we thought this was due to a lateral pressure only, and we renewed the broken posts with new ones, the result being that the new posts also were soon broken. A noticeable bending and breaking of the collars occurred, with a corresponding reduction in the height of the haulage slope. These symptoms were also evident on the counter above the slope, indicating that the trouble was of an exceptional nature. In the meantime, we had concentrated a large force of repair men, renewing broken timbers and brushing the roof and floor, but in spite of all our efforts we could not overtake the damage being done. Our next problem was to find the cause of this trouble. We were in a new basin of coal (No. 2) which had only been opened a few months, as we had worked the previous four years in another basin (No. 3) where no such trouble as this had ever been encountered. Naturally our first thought concerned the adequacy of the size of the pillars. We had worked in the No. 3 south basin for the previous four years. without any such experience, with 60-feet pillars between slope and counters; whereas we had established 100-foot pillars in the No. 2 south basin between the slopes and counters with an 80-foot pillar between counter and first line of cross-cuts, and 100-foot pillars between the breasts.

There are certain site-specific geological and physical features of a rock mass which control its behavior under the dynamic stresses induced by the action of explosives. It is essential that blasting technology be adapted specifically to those features. There does not exist a single, simple "right" way for each type of blasting operation, but rather each operation must be custom-designed for each site. When this is done, it is often possible to produce unusual but highly desirable end resglts, such as undisturbed narrow rock walls, monoliths and square benches. Although the techniques illustrated here were developed specifically for "sculpture blasting", the geomechanics principles would apply to other types of blasting control, both large-scale and small-scale. Because the techniques are designed more for the purpose of modifying the site responses which would ordinarily be expected than they are to developing new "blasting formulae?, the name "Modified Site Response Blasting" will be used.

Stock piling-and by that I mean well-organized stock piling on a substantial scale-is almost as old as the hills themselves. It was back in early Biblical times, as recounted in the Book of Genesis, that Joseph was charged by Pharaoh with the responsibility of stock piling food during the seven years of plenty to guard against the seven subsequent years of famine that were revealed by the Pharaoh's dream. And this same policy of storing up food or materials to provide for future anticipated emergencies can be traced repeatedly down through the ages. So our own efforts are anything but new. Our modern concept of stock piling-the purchase and storage of strategic materials to assure supplies needed in time of some future war- stems from our experience in World War I. In 1920, the War Department was charged by Congress with the responsibility of procuring all War Department supplies and mobilizing industry in the event of another war. During the two decades that followed there were many authoritative studies made of our deficient mineral problem, all of which pointed out the urgent necessity of stock piling certain strategic materials as a reserve against future war. One such study, made in 1925 through the combined efforts of the Mining and Metallurgical Society and the AIME, was done at the ex- press request of the War Department. A nitretação dos aços inoxidáveis tem sido objeto de diversos estudos nas últimas décadas. O objetivo primordial é promover o endurecimento superficial e com isso elevar a resistência ao desgaste, sem comprometer a resistência à corrosão. Em vista disto, a nitretação sob plasma a baixa temperatura, abaixo de 430oC, tem se mostrado um processo eficiente para inibir a precipitação de nitretos de cromo e promover o endurecimento superficial pela formação de fases expandidas pela supersaturação de nitrogênio. Este trabalho mostra a formação de ferrita expandida em um aço inoxidável ferrítico. Para isso foi utilizada o processo de nitretação sob Plasma-DC na temperatura de 400oC por 20 horas em mistura gasosa contendo 75%N2 e 25%H2. Os resultados de Difração de Raios-X mostraram que a nitretação em baixa temperatura é capaz de formar uma camada nitretada de ferrita expandida. Em Microscopia óptica observa-se uma camada homogênea com profundidade média de 32 microns de profundidade e dureza média de 1296 HV promovendo um endurecimento superficial do aço inoxidável ferrítico em mais de 5 vezes sem que ocorra a precipitação de nitretos de cromo e, com isso, preservado a resistência à corrosão.

This chrysotile asbestos orebody is located near the northern tip of the Province of Quebec, Canada. It is some 1818 km (1130 mi) north of Montreal; 480 km (300 mi) north of the tree line and is situated within the zone of continuous permafrost. The open pit ore zone is approximately 0.4 km (1/4 mi) in length some 61 m (200 ft) in width and plunges at 25-30 below surface to a vertical depth of at least 610 m (2000 ft). The orebody was originally evaluated by programs of surface mapping, diamond drilling and bulk sampling. The fibre is semi-crude, possesses excellent strength, and good fibre length distribution.

OUTOKUMPU, a large copper mine in eastern Finland, has the distinction of being one of the few important mines in the world discovered by a geologist the late Otto Triistedt, of the Geological Sur- vey of Finland, having found the out- clop in 1910 by tracing glacial ore boulders, some of which had been carried as far as fifty kilometres. As the mine had no connection with either railways or waterways and the possibilities of transport were poor, the owners first tried the Hybinette hydrometallurgical process to extract the copper. The raw ore was finely crushed, treated by a sulphatizing roast. and then leached. The resulting solution was electrolyzed, using lead anodes. Atualmente, há uma grande preocupação em criar materiais cada vez mais sustentáveis, dentro desse contexto, encontra-se, o compósito de matriz polimérica adicionado de fibra natural. Dentro dessa classe de fibras, uma das mais utilizadas é a fibra de bambu, a qual apresenta um grande desafio devido a dificuldade para a sua obtenção ultrapassando o comprimento crítico de utilização, que é em média 200 mm. Fibras com essa dimensão são consideradas longas, sendo utilizadas principalmente para a confecção de compósitos como carga de reforço dentro da matriz. Logo, é de fundamental importância determinar métodos simples de obtenção das fibras para se obter melhores resultados diante da finalidade do compósito. Esse trabalho visa apresentar de forma clara processos mecânicos e químicos para se obter fibras de bambu curtas, particuladas e longas, apresentando o seu potencial mecânico através de ensaios mecânicos. Ao realizar ensaios químicos e mecânicos, os procedimentos que apresentaram melhores resultados em relação a fibra ensaiada natural foram a mercerização a 5% de NaOH em solução aquosa e acetilação por uma hora a 100ºC.

A Bureau of Mines survey of noise from quarry production blasting was conducted at seven crushed-stone quarries, providing information on close-in noise generation, comparative instrumentation, and evaluation of the sound levels as related to blasting parameters and existing State and local noise standards. The results from this preliminary survey will be useful in the design of a complete investigation of the problem of noise from blasting. There exists an immediate need for technical guidelines for noise pollution control agencies presently working on the regulation of impulsive noise sources. This survey and results from previous work by other researchers are used to derive interim recommendations on weighting scales, generated sound levels, and instrumentation. These recommendations are based on the limited data presently available and may be modified with subsequent investigation of noise generation, propagation, structural damage, and human tolerance.

Limited geographically by size and geo-logically by origin, smaller countries and territories of the Caribbean are nonetheless engaging in efforts to encourage the initiation of mineral and mineral-related industries. Petroleum dominates the minerals sector, which otherwise consists principally of minor quantities of construction-oriented materials, usually for local consumption. The increased cost of petroleum has adversely affected most of the world, but these islands with their economies precariously balanced on the uncertainties of agriculture and tourism are especially vulnerable to petroleum's direct and indirect costs. In 1975, the Government of Antigua acquired the financially troubled West Indies Oil Company refinery at St. Johns. The refinery ceased operations in 1976. In 1979, negotiations were underway to sell Ashland Oil Co. an interest in the small, 20,000-barrel-per-day refinery for $6.6 million. In 1977, Antigua granted petroleum exploration rights to the Antigua Mineral Exploration Company, which planned to drill in an undefined offshore area, possibly between Antigua and Barbuda. The company expected to spend about $200,000 per year through 1982. There have been no reports on its activity.

This paper discusses the lubrication of surface and underground mining machinery and equipment from the standpoint of machine components. The machine components considered are bearings, cylinders, gears, chains, couplings, fluid drives, hydraulic systems, screws and wire ropes. The best selection of lubricants for these machine components, and for sub-divisions of the components, are outlined. They form general recommendations, for average operating conditions in both surface and under-ground mining operations. The American Petroleum Institute's service classification of both engine crankcase oils and gear oils is de-scribed and used in recommending products for these applications. The practical aspect of lubrication is kept foremost in the recommendations, which are designed to meet the requirements of a wide variety of equipment with the minimum number of lubricants. THE lubrication of mining machinery and equipment presents a variety of problems peculiar to the industry. The type of mine, the ambient temperature, water, dust, and operating and maintenance practices, as well as the age and condition of the equipment, are variables which have to be considered in making lubricant recommendations.

"Hollow bar tiebacks can offer an economical alternative to conventional solid bar and strand tieback systems for use in temporary excavation support construction. However, the limitations associated with the installation of hollow bar tiebacks require special attention during design, construction and load testing to verify conformance with conventional performance and proof testing criteria (PTI, 2014). In particular, providing a reliable free length is complicated by the 10-foot (3-m) -long, segmental, couplingto- coupling nature of the free length sheath in the hollow bar system, and addressing the fully grouted annulus of the bond zone and the free length zone at the end of installation are key concerns. In addition, it is often more convenient to install a greater number of more closely spaced, lower capacity tiebacks with the hollow bar system, compared to conventional tiebacks. This paper examines how these issues were addressed for a project involving a 60-foot (18-m) -deep sheet pile excavation through a highway embankment and a 70-foot-deep sheet pile and soldier pile and lagging excavation through a railroad embankment, both supported by a hybrid system of hollow bar tiebacks and hollow bar soil nails. The project involved approximately 300 tiebacks and 400 soil nails.INTRODUCTIONEngineers Construction, Inc. (ECI), constructed a pair of 32-foot (9.8-m) -wide (clear span), 30-foot (9- m) -high (21 feet (6.4 m) above the stream bed), cast-in-place concrete arch culverts as a design-build project for the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) in East Ryegate, Vermont. The new culverts replaced an existing 8-foot (2.4-m) -wide by 6-foot (1.8-m) -high cast-in-place concrete culvert under US Route 5 (RTE5), and twin, 2-foot (0.6-m) -wide by 5-foot (1.5-m) -high granite block culverts under the Washington County Railroad (WACR) alignment. The culverts convey Manchester Brook eastward, through the embankments for RTE5 and the WACR, on its way to the Connecticut River. The Connecticut River is located approximately 100 feet (30 m) east of the WACR embankment. The existing structures were undersized and backed up water behind the embankments during high flow events; and often trapped debris that flowed down the brook and became clogged. The existing culverts also had cracks and openings that have resulted in the loss of ground into the culverts and the formation of sinkholes in the sides of the embankments. Moreover, the reason for the large cross-sectional dimensions of the culverts was to make them of sufficient size and openness to encourage the migration of fish up the stream to spawn. The culvert through the RTE5 embankment is 144 feet (44 m) long, and the culvert through the WACR embankment is 128 feet (39 m) long, with a 57-foot (17.4-m) -long by 32–foot (9.8- m) -wide by 17-foot (5.2-m) -deep 10 feet (3 m) deep above the stream bed) open channel section between the two culverts. THE progress of metallurgical practice and the demands made by the engineering industry on our foundries and mills have made the crystalline structure of metals a subject of far more than academic interest. Metals and alloys are made up of crystals. Even if we accept the view, so ably maintained by some metallurgists, that the crystals are separated from one another by an amorphous layer, it remains true that all but a very minute fraction of any metallic mass is crystalline. The conditions which affect the growth of crystals are therefore of importance in metallurgy. It is not only castings whose properties depend on the arrangement of their crystals, for the more we learn of the behavior of forged, rolled and drawn metals, the more certain it becomes that it is profoundly influenced by the size and arrangement of the crystals in the original ingot, deter- mining a structure which may persist in a modified form through a long series of mechanical operations and annealings. This is mainly due to the concentration of much of the impurities in the last portions of the liquid to freeze, so that the boundaries between single crystals or groups of crystals are marked out by a zone of segregated material, differing in properties from the mass, and offering a barrier to diffusion and equalization of composition throughout the whole. The importance of this fact has been fully recognized by steel manufacturers, who have to deal with ingots which are sometimes very large, and are cast at a high temperature, containing impurities which have a marked effect on the properties even when present in very small quantity. For this reason the Iron and Steel Institute has set up a committee to examine the whole question of the heterogeneity of steel ingots,(l)f and a report has been issued, containing an account of the structure of 16 ingots, ranging in weight from 15 cwt. to 172 tons, each of which was sectioned and examined by chemical analysis and by etching. A valuable body of data concerning segregation has thus been collected.
