In hydrometallurgical processes of PGMs separation and refining, differences between 1-PGMs (Ru;Rh;Pd) and h-PGMs(Os;Ir;Pt) in thermodynamics and kinetics have been observed. The successful practice in the separation and refining of PGMs in China, is mainly based on the following two kinetically extraction sequences of: (1) for the extraction of PGMs complexes in different configurations with coordination mechanism (AuCI,) -> (MCl6)2-> (MCl4 )2-> (MCI6) 3- , and the substitution rate for h-PGMs complexes with higher effective nuclear charge Z' is much more slow than that of I-PGMs. and (2) for the extraction of PGMs in different configurations with oxonium (or ion -exchange) mechanism (AuCl4)-> (MCl4)2--> (MCl6)2-> (MCl6)3- and the extraction of h-PGMs complexes with low surface charge density is more fast than that of I-PGMs complexes. In view of atomic structure theory, the similarity of atomic radii and chemical properties and difficult separation of PGMs resulted from the Lanthanide Contruction between 5th period (1-PGMs) and 6th period (h-PGMs). The differences between h-PGMs and 1-PGMs are due to the loss shielding of 4f subshells on 5d electrons for h-PGMs with higher nuclear number, which makes h-PGMs have a higher Z' (effective nuclear charge) and strong attraction for outer space electrons. As a result, h-PGMs metals and complexes are thermodynamically more stable and kinetically more inert than the corresponding 1-PGMs. The differences between h-PGMs and 1 -PGMs in aspects of elements properties, complexes, hydration, substitution and redox reactions , are discussed.

A testing program was conducted to determine the suitability and reliability of adhesives and polycarbonate lenses for extended use in luminaires in mine environments. Polycarbonates were exposed, for periods up to 36 months, to four environments including ultraviolet light, humidity, intermittent water spray, and heat of either 180°F or 407 in various combinations. Rod impact tests on the exposed lens material indicated, that polycarbonate functions well under all 180°F environments and could be used with confidence for periods exceeding the test period, for as long as ten years, with a suit) able safety factor employed in design. The specimens exposed at 240°F showed decreased toughness after 24 months' exposure. Extrapolation of these data was deemed to be risky. A 462-day compatibility test between polycarbonate and six hydraulic fluids was run on stressed PC beams. One fluid caused beam breakage in less than one day, while three caused breakage at intermediate times. Two fluids exhibited essentially no effect on the PC when compared to a control. Epoxy and silicone adhesives were tested as lens adhesives and sealants. Three epoxy combinations tested showed low and erratic failure stresses. A room-temperature-cure silicone adhesive functioned extremely well for time periods up to 36 months and temperatures u2 to 240°F.

Certain types of mobile surface mining equipment are required to be equipped with rollover protective structures (ROPS) capable of protecting the operator in case of a rollover accident. The Bureau of Mines has developed ROPS performance criteria for wheeled front-end loaders. This report reviews the development of rollover test procedures and subsequent testing of ROPS for 52,000-, 286,000-, and 390,000-lb gross vehicle weight (GVW) loaders. The program consisted of both dynamic (roll) and static tests to assist in the development of the ROPS performance criteria. Each test included extensive instrumentation and photographic documentation to fully evaluate the performance of the ROPS. Data summarizing side, longitudinal, and vertical force and deflections are included. The data indicate that for loaders in excess of 240,000 lb, GVW, a side force-to-mass ratio of 1.0 and an energy-to-mass ratio of 6.0 appear to be adequate criteria to protect an operator in the event of a 5400 rollover. For smaller machines, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 11040 performance criteria provide adequate protection. Longitudinal loading, though not ad-dressed in previous ROPS performance criteria, was shown to be a potentially significant factor in ROPS failure. Longitudinal loading and energy criteria equal to 80 pct of side loading criteria are recommended.

The Ilo Smelter has been continuously operating since 1960 with Reverberatory furnaces and Pierce Smith converters producing blister copper. The original installed capacity of 1.134 tons per day of concentrated was expanded in 1976. A process of modernization started in 1995 and 1998 with the installation of an El Teniente Converter, a sulfuric acid plant and an oxygen plant to reduce the gaseous emissions to the atmosphere. With the official approval of the Environmental Compliance and Management Program (Programa de Adecuaci6n y Manejo Ambiental - PAMA) in January 1997, Southern Peru Copper Corporation made a commitment to capture 91. 7% of the S02 generated at the smelter by January 2007. After an evaluation of six different technologies, the ISASMEL T process was selected because it can be easily adapted to the present operation, has a lower capital cost and it is a simple process. The fast learning curve to reach the total capacity will allow to fulfill the PAMA commitment in time. The project construction is in process and SPCC is prepared for a successful start-up and transition of the current operations at the end of year 2006. This paper outlines the factors considered by SPCC in its choice of ISASMEL T technology and describes the construction and the start-up activities of the new facilities.

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's Ahafo Operation has matured from its project ramp up stage into steady state operations after three years of operation. Management focus has shifted from addressing construction and commissioning problems to optimization and improvement. This focus change has coincided with the introduction by Newmont of a Continuous Improvement (CI) program across the company which provided a project management methodology that can be used in the execution of smaller scale projects. This paper focuses on the application of CI principles at the Ahafo Plant through the discussion of several case studies that demonstrate how these principles are applied.

"Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy Throughout the history of Nova Scotia, trends in the production and use of its coal resources have resulted in major impacts on the economy and society of the province. Current trends in coal demand locally, nationally and internationally are having and will have an increasing positive effect on Nova Scotia over the next twenty years-in terms of energy supply, job creation and general economic development. Coal for electrical generation is an immediate and key objective of Nova Scotia's energy plan; and, in the long term, coal-derived fuels will meet the province's needs for transportation fuels. Demand for metallurgical coal is also expected to increase, especially if the merchant coke plant currently under investigation becomes a reality.Meeting these coal supply and utilization objectives in the face of increasing environmental, social and economic constraints poses a tremendous technical challenge. Work has begun on projects to expand coal production capacity and to adapt new technologies for coal preparation and utilization to the specific needs of Nova Scotia; much more work will be required in the coming decade in order to succesfully tap this resource.IntroductionThe energy problem facing Atlantic Canada has a few unique features not found in the rest of the country. Canada, as a whole, has access to a diverse mix of energy resources, including crude oil, natural gas, coal, hydro and uranium, with the result that crude oil supplies only about 40 per cent of Canada's primary demand. In contrast, foreign crude oil dominates Atlantic Canada's energy mix, supplying over 70 per cent of the primary energy demand.This results in important differences in various sectors. Nationally, about 5 per cent of the electricity is generated from oil whereas last year in Nova Scotia approximately 40 per cent of the electricity generated was from imported oil. Residential, commercial and industrial space heating, and industrial process heating in Atlantic Canada was almost 100 percent dependent on foreign oil. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in central and western Canada, which have access to secure domestic natural gas, oil and hydro electricity."

Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. "District of Arabianranta (Helsinki, Finland) has been founded on an old seabed, which was filled with miscellaneous soil materials. The subsoil consists of very low shear strength clays and organic clays (gyttjas). The soil was moving towards the sea at a rate of 1050 mm/year, because of filling on top of the soft subsoil. In the middle of 1990’s it was decided to build a residential area to Arabianranta, because it is located only 5 km away from the downtown. To inhibit the movement of soil, it was planned to build this 700 m long deep mixed column-wall barrier along the shore of Arabianranta in the years 1997–2005. A lot of instrumentation and inclinometers were analyzed and it was noticed that the column-wall remains at its place and the displacement rate inside the wall has been only 0.44.6 mm/year after construction works. Nevertheless, the displacement of soil at the landward side of the column-wall is still 1.25.1 mm/year. The soil at the seaside of the barrier is also moving towards the sea 12.922.2 mm/year. Another problem might be displacements of soil near the places where the column-wall ends (tails).1. INTRODUCTIONArabianranta district (Helsinki, Finland) has been an industrial, storage and wasteland area for a long time. Developing this area into a residential area was earlier considered too expensive, so it has been constructed during last decade. The organic clay layers (gyttjas), which have weak shear strength and high water content, were covered by various layers of fillings done in different phases. Because of the fillings, the area was not only consolidating, but also moving horizontally 1050 mm/year towards the sea due to the fact that the frictional soil under clay layers slopes towards the sea. A trial deep mixed structure was constructed in 1997 to inhibit the horizontal displacements of soil. The actual construction of the columnwall was completed in 2000-2005 with overlapping deep mixed cement columns on the seaward boundary. The barrier was built so that the horizontal movements would not risk the pile foundations at Arabianranta. The length of the barrier is about 680 m and width varies between 1220 m. There is a great amount of instrumentation near the barrier (inclinometer casings and other measuring devices). All this measuring information has been collected and analysed at 2014 to find out how this deep mixed column-wall has affected the horizontal displacements."

E. was marked by the most delightful cordiality and warm spirit of welcome on the part of the members of the New York Section and an equally charming spirit of cooperation and appreciation on the part of the visitors. On Monday Mrs. Ernest H. Wolfes and Mrs. Charles A. Bohn had charge of registration and most efficiently .provided everyone with the necessary tickets and badges. The reception hall and regisfration booth were gay with beautiful flowers that reflected the welcoming spirit one found there. The smooth efficiency with which the whole program ran was due largely to the tireless efforts of Mrs. Donald M. Liddell and Mrs. Louis D. Huntoon, joint chairmen of the Ladies' Committee, and Miss Margaret Callow, chairman of the Junior Committee. After registering, the ladies proceeded to- the fifth floor, where they had luncheon with the members of the A. I. M. E. On that day Mrs. W. H. Bassett and Mrs. Lucius W. Mayer were the hostesses.

The hard roof in underground coal mines is generally considered as a main cause that induces disasters in working faces and entries, such as rock burst and windblast. Hydraulic fracturing technology is an effective approach to weaken hard roof to reduce ground pressure and control rock burst. The state and achievements associated with hydraulic fracturing technology applied in Chinese coal mines are summarized in this paper. Theories related to hydraulic fracturing are of the essence in fracture design to determine the fracture initiation and propagation pressure and predict the geometry and the characteristics of hydraulically induced fractures. Initially, theory of elasticity was employed to determine the breakdown pressure for a vertical borehole where the rock medium is assumed to be elastic. However, porosity and pore fluid have an influence on the borehole breakdown pressure, and then the poroelasticity theory was applied. Arbitrary deviated boreholes in practice are rather common and the maximum tensile stress criterion was employed to determine borehole breakdown pressure. The effect of natural crack in the rock medium on the initiation pressure has been taken into consideration through fracture mechanics. Meanwhile, considerable achievements have been made on hydraulic fracturing tools and equipment, and a set of mature hydraulic fracturing technologies for hard roof control are available. Some comprehensive investigations on the hydraulic fracturing for hard roof weakening are presented, and successful field applications in the Jincheng and Luan coal mining districts are introduced. Finally, the unsolved problems related to hydraulic fracturing are also put forward.

This study presents a method for the determination of intra-particle diffusivities in ion-exchange resins for the purposes of evaluating the state of resin degradation during service. The method uses a zero length column (ZLC) in a closed circuit with variable speed pump and reservoir. The intra-particle diffusion is determined from absorption data by using the Nernst-Plank approximation along with the ‘mass transfer factor’ - which is a product of the mass transfer coefficient (kf )and the concentration of the adsorbing ion in the liquid at the surface of the resin - in a computer algorithm fitting simulated curves to experimental data.. Through this approach the changed intra-particle diffusivity, of a gel-type acid resin, over a 1000 loading and elution cycles, is shown.

Antimony oxide ores are important antimony resources, but their recovery is still a problem. In this paper, the adsorption behaviour and mechanism of dodecamine and quaternary ammonium salt on the surface of cervantite and quartz were investigated. The flotation behaviour of cervantite and quartz using quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine as collectors was studied by single mineral flotation experiments. The adsorbed amount was measured and infrared spectroscopy was used to study the ability of several cationic collectors to float cervantite and quartz. The results show that quaternary ammonium salts can simultaneously float the cervantite and quartz. It is difficult to achieve separation of the two minerals using quaternary ammonium salts as collectors. At pH>10, dodecylamine can float quartz but not cervantite, which can achieve reverse flotation separation of the two minerals. The difference between the abilities of quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine to float cervantite and quartz lies in the different ionisation properties of the two reagents. Quaternary ammonium salt is a strong electrolyte that is completely ionised in the pulp and exists mainly in the form of quaternary ammonium ions. A new hydrometallurgical process has been developed to recover copper from sulfide ores. Copper is leached in a staged reactor system utilizing nitric and sulfuric acids at 105°C. Iron is removed from the pregnant liquor as a jarosite and cathode copper is electrowon directly from the purified pregnant liquor. The spent electrolyte is recycled. Nitrogen oxides evolved from the leach are reconverted to nitric acid and are also recycled. Sulfur is rejected as S°, jarosite and gypsum. The process is highly versatile and can recover precious metals, molybdenum and zinc, when these elements are present. Continuous, integrated, semi-pilot plant operations using chalcopyrite ores demonstrated 99% copper leaching and production of cathode grade copper. Economic evaluation shows that the process is competitive with pyrometallurgical and other hydrometallurgical processes.

An ongoing problem for industry in Korea is effective removal of heavy metals from and safe disposal of spent power plant fly ash. This research endeavor attempts to develop selective separation of Ni from leach liquor using a selective chemical precipitation method. The research was conducted by changing two variables, the pH and the concentration of ions in solution. The effect of other ions present in the system on the separation efficiency of Ni species was also investigated by adjusting OH and NH3 concentrations. In the pH range of 7-9, the chemical precipitation method produced a high yield of Ni by precipitation from the fly ash leach liquor.

Traditionally, characterisation of the mineralogy and textures of ore and rock samples were based on observations of hand specimens and thin sections using an optical microscope. The extent of the data collection was limited by the available tools and thus variations in mineralogy and texture were generally not described by quantitative data. These qualitative to semi-quantitative approaches, even though well established over the years, resulted in variable observations and data sets. The data were unlikely to be representative of a sample and limited statistical validity meant the results could not be reliably used in modern digital mining design and planning. With recently developed SEM based quantitative mineralogy tools and the corresponding methodologies, ore textures can be quantified and compared numerically. The numerical data can not only enhance the understanding of an orebody in geological terms, but can also be used in the creation of metallurgical models for mine and mineral processing design and simulation. These capabilities provide valuable inputs to risk assessment studies and the evaluation of mineral projects.

IN the broad survey of the nonferrous' metallic elements contained in this book, the reader may well be impressed by the wide range of property combinations offered by the many metals and alloys the metallurgist has prepared since before Kubla Khan. The diversity is great and the overlap is considerable. It is particularly surprising, then, to find the latest structural metal new- comer designated by such extravagant terms as "Cinderella Metal," "Wonder Metal," "Miracle Metal," "The Metal of Tomorrow," "Dream Metal or Nightmare?" and "The Middleweight Champion of the Structural Metals." Of these and others, the most appropriate designation for the metal involved, titanium, appears to be that of The Middleweight Champion. Its intermediate density of 4.5 and elastic modulus of 16 million is a unique combination between the lower density and modulus of magnesium and aluminum and the higher density and modulus of copper, nickel, and iron. It is light, strong, ductile, and corrosion resistant. A chemical neighbor in group IV of the Periodic Table, zirconium, is similar to titanium in many respects but is appreciably denser, 6.5 instead of 4.5, less stiff and relatively much less abundant. On the other hand, the resistance of zirconium to acids and alkalies is better than that of titanium. Also, compensating for its higher density, lower stiffness, and somewhat lower strength level compared with titanium, zirconium has much better permeability to slow neutrons and is much more suitable as a material of construction for nuclear reactors.

Orebodies at or near the surface are generally amenable to open pit mining. The development of a mining program involves designing an ultimate pit and a production schedule. This pit maximizes total profit while the production schedule maximize6 the present value of the property. Optimum pit limits can be approximated by two-and three-dimensional numerical techniques. These techniques presuppose that the mineralized area has been sufficiently sampled to allow a reasonably accurate prediction of grade at any spatial location.

A study of the consumption of reagents used in flotation gives useful data as to the market which employment of the flotation process creates for the manufacturers of the necessary chemicals and oils, and furnishes a useful clue to the trends in flotation practice influencing the choice of reagents used and the' extent to which new reagents are displacing less suitable older reagents. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to cover both of these phases of the consumption of reagents in flotation. Unfortunately, however, the data collected in tie various districts have not been equally informative; some operators have reported very completely both the consumption of reagents and the metallurgical results obtained therewith, while others were apparently unable to supply these figures in sufficient detail to meet the requirements of this investigation. RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION Table 1 gives the tonnage of ore treated by flotation, as reported. This table shows that flotation has been most largely used in the concentration of copper ores, next in complex lead-zinc ores, followed by lead ores, zinc ores, miscellaneous ores, and copper-iron ores.

Bioleaching method makes use of bacteria in solving metallic sulphides, so that these bacteria tend to convert insoluble metal sulphides into soluble sulphates. Since the kinetics description of this process is inevitable for better interpretation of relation between metabolism and growth of live organisms, as well as optimization of metals extraction processes, in this paper, this description is represented and designed in mathematic (kinetics) model for copper sulphide minerals based on Monod kinetics model. According to this model, special growth rate of bacteria (?) is a hyperbola function of restrictive substrate concentration (S). By Solving and developing of Monod kinetics model, a comprehensive kinetics model for bioleaching of copper sulphide minerals results. The designed is also applicable for other metal sulphides.
