This paper describes the mining setting for the sub-level open stoping (SLOS) mining method used at Olympic Dam (OD), and investigates the range of stope performance conditions encountered over 30 years of production, using a qualitative description of the factors influencing performance. Utilising a continuous improvement tool, the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) process, and a forward-looking rock mechanics program, the intent is to identify the key factors driving productivity and performance to create a stable and achievable long term mine plan.

In recent years over 100,000 persons have been killed annually in the United. States by accidents; about one-fifth of these have been workers in some of our industries; about one-third have been killed by motor vehicles; about another third have mot death in home accidents, chiefly falls, burns, scalds, explosions, poisons, asphyxiations, suffocations, cuts, scratches, and so forth; and the rest have been killed in public accidents, excluding those caused by vehicles but including accidents on railroads or electric cars, drowning, and deaths by firearms and. other means. Definite statistics on nonfatal accidents are not readily available, but at least 10,000,000 fairly serious accidents probably occur in the United States annually. The latest industrial-accident statistics are obtainable from 1935 National Safety Council publications, in which annual industrial fatalities are divided about as follows (in round numbers): Agriculture, 4,500; trade and service, 4,500; construction, 3,100; transportation and public utilities, 2,900; manufacturing, 2,600; mining, quarrying, petroleum, etc., 1,900.

Rope guides, consisting of ropes spanning between anchor points at the top and bottom of shafts, have frequently been considered as a viable alternative to fixed guides, comprising buntons and guides. However, their design has generally been based on empirically derived rules, arising from European hoisting practice of 50 to 100 years ago. This paper describes a recent technology development project aimed at defining and quantifying the important forces acting on rope guided conveyances, calculating the resulting displacement of the conveyances and assessing whether the displacements are acceptable or not. The paper describes the derivation of aerodynamic force coefficients based on CFD analyses and other significant forces acting on the conveyance and rope system. The conveyance displacements may be calculated using computer simulation of the mechanical system, or approximately using simplified equations given in the paper. Measurements taken to confirm the suitability of the proposed formulation are described. The combination of displacements and assessment of the rope guide system design are proposed, based on the ratio of design clearances and the predicted displacements.

TOP-SLICING was introduced in the Pachuca district in 1917 by T. C. Baker, at that time mine superintendent, of the Santa Gertrudis mine. There then existed 1200 ft. (365.7 m.) below the surface, lying between the fourteenth and eighteenth levels (a vertical distance of 108 meters) a block of ore having a length of 295 ft. (90 m.), and an average width of 82 ft. (25 m.) and dipping at an angle of 65°. This block lay in the hanging wall of the vein and consisted of highly altered and fractured andesite, cut through with mineralized quartz stringers. On the foot-wall side, 26 ft. (8 m.) of old filling, left by former operators, was of payable grade. Stoping therein was first undertaken by the square-set filling system, but because of the extremely heavy hanging wall and loose dry filling in the foot wall, all square setting had to be accompanied by spiling, which made the operation exceedingly slow and costly. A system of mining was sought that would eliminate the difficulties inherent to the square-set system in heavy ground and that at the same time would effect the desired economies in mining. After several years, top-slicing has met all the conditions most satisfactorily, so that when similar conditions presented themselves in El Bordo mine, this method was adopted with necessary modifications. El Bordo mine is operated by the Santa Gertrudis company, and is situated about two miles north of Pachuca. Because of the diversity of the orebodies, a number of different mining methods are in use, among them top-slicing.

THE United Eastern Mining Co.'s property is located in the Oatman, Gold Roads mining district of Mohave County, Ariz. The mine and mill are some 26 mi. (41.8 km.) southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway connection. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz with some andesite. The values, which are mainly gold, alloyed with approximately 34 per cent., by weight, of silver, are extremely fine so that fine grinding is a most important factor in extraction. The milling process, briefly, consists of single-stage, coarse-crushing, two-stage ball milling in cyanide solution, followed by combined mechanical and air agitation, and by straight counter-current decantation. The Merrill zinc-dust precipitation method is used to recover the values, and is preceded by the Crowe vacuum treatment of the solution. The most notable features of the plant are the absence of filters, and the use of short peb mills loaded with steel balls, for fine grinding. As originally designed, the capacity of the mill was to be 200 tons per day, although the grinding end was to be capable of handling double that amount. By adding extra agitators and thickeners and by some alterations to the grinding end, the daily capacity has been raised to 285 tons. This, it is hoped, may be increased to 300 tons during the warm months of the present year. The natural gas-air burner described in this report was designed and constructed to meet the thermal requirements of a convective process for heating steel scrap. This process involved downward combustion of natural gas with air, blending the combustion products with diluent air, and then passing this tempered stream of gases downward through a porous bed of steel scrap contained in the furnace chamber. The scrap would be heated to a temperature limited by the adiabatic flame temperature of the gas stream in a period that depended on the rate at which heat was supplied per unit of bed cross section. The temperature of the gas stream would be limited to that beyond which an objectionable degree of oxidation would occur; for carbon steel this limit had been found to vary from 1,900° to 2,100° F. with the superficial velocity of the gas stream. The productivity of the process was dependent on the rate of heat input per unit of furnace cross section; for the 3-foot-diameter experimental furnace an input of 680,000 B.t.u. per hour was desired. The burner described was designed to meet these conditions of temperature and heat input. It provided for three streams of entering gases: (1) A primary air-fuel mixture too rich to be combustible, that is, above the upper flammable limit; (2) secondary air for combustion of the primary mixture; and (3) tertiary air, principally for cooling the combustion products to the temperatures desired for process operation. Downward combustion of the primary and secondary streams occurred in a flame stabilized on an annular port, while tertiary air flowed in an annular path surrounding the port and also through an axial channel whose wall formed the inner ring of the annular port. This burner performed beyond the designed heat-input rates while producing stable flames, which were adjusted readily to the temperatures desired. Gas-stream temperatures were easily controlled to within 15° F. of the desired value by simple manual adjustment of the flow valves.

Mr. Chairman, Officers, Members and Guests of the AIME, I want to express my appreciation for the privilege of being on your program at this meeting. Coal mining, in recent years, has become much more competitive than it formerly was. To stay in business, it has been necessary for coal mines to mechanize. This, in itself, has not been enough for after one has mechanized his mine, he must keep replacing the equipment with the latest type and model machines. We, at Olga, have been doing this very thing for the past several years. Olga No. 2 Mine is located at Caretta, West Virginia, in McDovell County, about twelve miles south of Welch, It is a shaft mine, operating in the No. 4 Pocahontas seam. The thickness in the area, we are presently mining, varies from five to six feet. In some areas the immediate roof is slate, ranging in thickness from a few inches to four and five feet; in other places, the sandstone lies on top of the coal, This sandstone is about twenty-five feet thick.

"In order to understand the sintering phenomena during iron ore sintering process, a CFD model of iron ore sintering has been developed, combining with the kinetics of 15 relevant chemical reactions with the aim of describing the temperature fields and the gas flow patterns in the sintering bed. This CFD model can be used to simulate the concentrations of the gaseous and solid species, temperatures of the gas and solid, melting and molten fractions of the mixture, gas velocities, temperature zones and residence times of the gas in each temperature zone. IntroductionThe off-gas analyses clearly revealed that the off-gas of a sinter strand does not have a composition corresponding to thermodynamic equilibrium, for example, the CO, CO2 and O2 concentrations are not the mutually consistent equilibrium values. Apparently the chemical reactions in the sinter bed are controlled kinetically. Therefore kinetic modeling of sintering reactions combined with CFD modeling is necessary to understand the sintering phenomena during iron ore sintering process.Several models of iron ore sintering have been developed since 1970 [l-l 4l, each being more refined than its predecessor. The models were formulated as a series of differential equations to describe chemical and physical changes occurring at a point in the bed. These equations were solved numerically in a vertical plane along the strand. The present CFD model, based on the Nath's model [14], has been published in the reference [15]. In this work, some new chemical kinetic models of gas-solid reactions are incorporated in the present CFD model. The concentrations of gaseous and solid species, temperatures of gas and solid, melting and molten fractions of solid, velocity of gas, and residence time of gas in each combustion zone can be calculated by this model."

The channel-type non-mechanical stirring production process is a new developed technology for emulsion explosives in recent years. It removes traditional equipment such as mechanical-mixing emulsification, mechanical-mixing sensitization, matrix pumping, and explosive pumping, and has been applied in China. This technique achieves a fusion of higher intrinsic safety and lower cost, as well as the excellent quality of products and high efficiency of production. The emulsion particle diameter is about 0.5μm. The storage period of emulsion explosive produced with span-80 emulsifier is more than 7 months.

This paper is one of a series being prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines to disseminate technical information retarding the methods used in mining nonmetallic minerals. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. This paper deals particularly with methods and costs of dredging, classifying materials, and transportation at the plant of the Ross Island Sand & Gravel Co. of Portland, Ore. The estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from coalmines is increasingly becoming a priority for both operators and regulators. At the same time, involved scientific challenges in the methane measurements is generating significant interest from global research community. Various technology providers are also actively engaged in improving their sensors and platforms to address the measurement challenges and capitalise the market opportunities. This presentation highlights rapidly evolving multifaceted landscape of coalmine greenhouse gas emissions. It covers the advances in sensors for the detections, including ground-based, airborne, and satellite-based systems as well as models for the emission estimations, including attempts to reduce the involved uncertainties.

The flow of a liquid through a large grain filter has been considered. An improved form of the fluid dynamic equations describing flows through porous media is proposed. The theory is applicable to all Reynolds numbers. Particulate inclusions are described by passive scalar fields where only very simple mechanisms for particle removal are included. However, the deposition of particles are allowed to change the "porosity" of the filter. Hence, the flow pattern through the filter will change as the filter ages. The theory is employed to the filtration of aluminum in an industrial grain filter. The model shows that the filter is not effectively designed and there is room for considerable improvement. The dynamic "aging" process of the filter is shown to change the filtration from bed filtration to cake filtration. Finally, the predicted inclusion collection efficiencies are compared to efficiencies measured in an industrial filter. The predicted initial efficiencies are in very good agreement with experimental results.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests to compare the cutting forces required by radial and point-attack bits when making similar cuts. Three radial and four point-attack bits were tested in two coal mines using the Bureau's in-seam tester to measure coal-cutting forces in situ. Tests were also conducted to investigate the effects of weathering and cleating. The test results show that in each case, at a specific clearance angle, the radial bits required less tangential and much less normal force than the point-attack bits. The resultant of the cutting forces for some types of cut was 50 pct less at mine 1 for radial cuts compared to cuts with the best point-attack bit, and 40 pct less at mine 2. There was some difference between three types of radial bits, but it was not as significant as the difference between each type of point-attack bit. Cutting coal perpendicular to the cleat planes required less cutting and normal force than the same type of cuts parallel to the cleat planes. Test results showed no effect due to weathering on cutting force data. Cutting parallel increased forces only because cuts were made in the rock band.

SOME 70 miles south-east of the of Auckland lies the town of Waihi-the centre of the Waihi goldfield, at present the mining pride of New Zealand. That the glory of most mining camps is evanescent forms an axiom to which it may be expected Waihi will prove no exception. For the last fifteen years, however, Waihi has been an important gold-silver producer, with an annually increasing output, so that now the area ranks as one of the leading goldfields of the world.

This paper presents the experience that NESA and MECHIM have gained about recovery of non ferrous and precious metals from complex sulfide materials. Processed materials are from natural deposits or metallurgical by-products or residues. Roasting of these materials is closely related to the pyro or hydrometallurgical processes used downstream of the roasting. Conditions of a first step of roasting the SELECTIVE ROASTING, are analyzed and explained. The roasted products so obtained are characterised by an extended elimination of volatile sulfides (AS, Bi, Sb, Sn, Pb, Hg, ?? ) and are readily available for the pyrometallurgical recovery of non ferrous and precious metals. After the SELECTIVE ROASTING, thanks to. the high porosity obtained in the "selective calcine", the SULFATE ROASTING is per-formed in excellent conditions. Hydrometallurgical tests performed for the final calcine show a high recovery of non ferrous and precious? metals and require only simple and well known processes. Many experimental and commercial data are given.

It is generally acknowledged that the head grade of the world’s copper resources is declining. Accordingly, there is an increase in the volume of resource material being mined and processed to maintain copper production. This has led to increases in cost base accompanied by reductions in Life of Mine (LOM) Net Present Value (NPV). The higher tonnages of material mined are driven by increased quantities of lower grade material required to satisfy the short term mine model. In turn, this has brought an increased focus on sampling and assay methods, since any error associated with estimating the grade of each block and determining its correct destination serves to magnify the losses that will occur. Presently most open-pit copper mining operations use blasthole sample assays to feed their shortterm model. The problematic nature of blasthole sampling is well documented (Engström, 2017), particularly the poor timeliness of the data and the significant errors that are inherent to the technique. Methods to improve grade control, such as drilling a separate grade control grid, have been proposed but come with their own cost, logistical, and accuracy shortcomings. A recent development in grade estimation is the Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) downhole logging probe. Deployed on an efficient semi-autonomous platform, PFTNA is being aggressively adopted in the Australian iron ore industry. The technology provides in-situ elemental analysis of the geological formation, delivering high accuracy, high efficiency, near realtime data from a sizeable measurement volume. In this paper we consider the application of the technology to copper. Whilst there are several operational components to such a value proposition, we focus on the benefits of improved gradeestimation. A simulated copper mine is used to model the quantum of improvement expected from a reduced grade-estimation error, which reduces the likelihood of misallocating material to the wrong destination, which in turn increases NPV.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the methods and results of many of the laboratory studies on spontaneous heating of coal published in the last 50 years. It includes a brief description of experimental methods, indices of combustibility, and important contributing factors. Adiabatic calorimetry, isothermal calorimetry, [0], sorption systems, or temperature differential are the most frequently used experimental methods. Indices of combustibility include various heating rates, crossing point temperature, ignition temperature, and CO index. Factors that affect the spontaneous heating of coal include air flow rate, changes in moisture content, particle size, rank, temperature, pyrite content, geological factors, and mining practice. Experimental conditions and results from 20 papers are summarized in an appendix, and the bibliography contains 45 references.
