One of the principal objectives of the Bureau of Mines program for development of superrefractory ceramic materials is to obtain fundamental data on the physical properties of refractory oxides. Elements of particular interest to research workers in the Bureau include groups III and IV of the Periodic Table and the rare-earth group. This report contains thermal expansion and phase inversion measurements on oxides of scandium, yttrium, lanthanum and 12 lanthanide series elements (promethium and terbium omitted) up to 1,350°C, made by high-temperature X-ray diffractometer techniques. Thermal expansion values were calculated from unit cell dimensions measured at selected temperatures; with anisotropic oxides expansion was determined parallel to each major crystallographic axis. The combined random and systematic errors in the thermal expansion values are considered to be less than 3 percent of the total expansion at 500° C, and approximately 2 percent at 1,000° C, No difference in expansion coefficients was observed between heating and cooling cycles for oxides that did not undergo phase inversion. Tabular data of linear expansion, in percent, linear expansion coefficients, and graphical presentation of linear expansion as a function of temperature are presented.

Critical minerals are becoming more important in our technological society because they are used in many of our electronic devices, batteries, and magnets. In New Mexico, low to moderate concentrations of critical minerals are found in Late Cretaceous coal and related strata in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, REE, and Critical Minerals) program. The New Mexico coal, humate, and clinker deposits are relatively low in REE (<325 ppm TREE), Li (<90 ppm), V (<168 ppm), Co (<51 ppm), Ni (<108 ppm), Zr (<557 ppm), and many other critical minerals compared to normal economic deposits. Some of these rocks are enriched in Al2O3 (<40%) and Sr (<3740 ppm), both critical minerals. Common minerals hosting the critical minerals in these rocks include clay minerals, zircon, and rutile/anatase. As the demand for some of these elements increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics. Ultimately, economic potential will most likely depend upon production of more than one commodity, maybe even from coal, humate, and clinker deposits.

The Marquette District of Central Northern Michigan is the oldest of the Lake Superior iron districts with a mining history dating from 1852 up to the present. The total production of all types of ore through 1965 was 338,120, 146 long tons. Emphasis up to the 1950's was on mining the direct shipping ores; however, demands for higher-grade and better-structured ores in the last decade has resulted in a complete shift in emphasis to beneficiating the lowgrade Negaunee Iron-formation to produce high-grade iron ore pellets. The Precambrian sediments of the Marquette Range have been correlated with the Animikie Series of the Thunder Bay District, Ontario, and are contained in a westward plunging synclinorium that is approximately 3 3 miles in length and 3 to 6 miles in width. -The rock unit of major economic importance is the Negaunee Iron-formation that reaches a thickness of 2500 feet near the City of Negaunee. The primary iron content of the Negaunee Iron-formation averages 26 per cent, whereas the altered iron-formation approximates 31 per cent. The Negaunee Iron-formation has been divided into three principal types: diagenetic, oxidized, and metamorphic. The ores produced to date fall into four categories: high-grade soft ores, high-grade hard ores, siliceous ores, and concentrates and agglomerates (pellets). The soft ores generally are found in synclines and in fault-trough structures, bounded by mafic dikes along at least one side, and are mainly found in the basal portion of the Negaunee. In contrast, the hard ores occur in the uppermost portion of the Negaunee and are controlled by structural features such as folds, faults, and dikes. Iron-formation that has undergone diagenetic and metamorphic alteration makes up the main beneficiating ore types. Studies on the Negaunee Iron-formation have played an important role in the formulation of many of the theories on the origin of the Precambrian iron-formations.

C URRENT practice in the zinc concentrate roasting plant of The Consolidated Mining arid Smelting Company of Canada Limited, at Trail, B.C., involves passing the furnace effluent gases through an electrostatic precipitator for the recovery of dust. After removal of the dust the gas is treated for recovery of sulphur dioxide by conversion into sulphuric acid ( 1). However. as roasting techniques improved, and furnace productivity in-creased, the rated capacity of the precipitator was exceeded and it was necessary to consider various means of improving the dust recovery. A study of methods indicated that a baghouse using silicone-treated glass fabric, might be suitable for this particular application. Glass fabric was chosen because the temperature of the roaster effluent gases would range from 450°F to 500°F and tempering air was undesirable to avoid dilution of the sulphur dioxide gas.

This paper presents the findings of a study on roof bolters&apos; hazard exposure. A "micro-analysis" of accident data was combined with ergonomic observations of roof bolter operators to categorize bolting-related injuries and a checklist was constructed. Bolting-related problems were identified as situations that could expose bolter operators to hazards. Approaches to avoid these situations were applied at six mining operations to evaluate specific problems in roof bolting operations. The re-search emphasized the importance of analyzing worker behaviors in the context of mining situations and equipment design problems that lead to human error accidents.

In 1961, a research program started at Columbia into the mechanical aspects of flotation,* and certain ends are now in view. The purpose of this note is to explain these tentative conclusions in the hope of stimulating discussion and eliciting new data, especially industrial data, with which to test the views expressed. The variables presently under consideration are impeller rotational speed, N, volumetric air rate, Q, and impeller diameter, D, the latter being the parameter chosen to designate cell size. In an effort to test the extent to which fundamental fluid mechanics can provide a prediction of particle separation, a study on a simple parallel-sided sluice has been carried out using glass bead and ilmenite mixtures at various particle concentrations and flow rates. Great care was taken to devise a flow splitter at the end of the sluice that permitted accurate measurement of the fluid flow profile and collection of slurry samples, allowing evaluation of the particle species concentration profiles. The actual particle separation taking place was compared to predictions made by first describing the fluid flow by a modified ?law of the wall? model. The hydrostatic pressure variation in the flow was taken into account and the eddy viscosity was calculated from a mixing length expression incorporating Van Driest?s damping function. Using an average density and viscosity provides an explicit expression for the velocity gradient that can be numerically integrated for the flow profile. The particle concentration distributions were then modelled with Hunt?s sediment transport model assuming the particle eddy diffusion coefficient to be the same as that for the water. Hindered settling velocities of the particles were calculated using Brauer and Thiele?s formula, which takes the particle size and density distributions and solids volumetric concentration into account. The resulting predictions of particle separation are shown to be a strong function of the settling velocities of the particles used. Keywords: flowing film concentrators, fluid velocity

"An overview of various physical and interfacial characterization methods for use in mineral processing is presented in this paper. The availability of a large number of characterization techniques and commercial instruments requires that the reliability and limitation of each be carefully examined. The choice of a method may depend upon the manner in which the information is to be used, for example in development of new processes, plant and process design, plant control, problem solving, etc. IntroductionThe behavior of particulate systems, in mineral processing and other applications, is primarily affected by the physical characteristics (size, shape, surface area, pore structure) of the particles and the nature of the different solid-fluid interfaces present. Mineral processing operations in general are either designed to modify and/or control physical and interfacial properties (grinding, classification, agglomeration, etc.) or are strongly influenced by them (flotation, flocculation, solid/liquid separation, etc.). Characterization of physical and interfacial properties should be an integral part of the development of new processes, plant and process design, and routine plant operation.Our purpose in preparing this article has been to present an overview of the current status of characterization, to point out areas of weakness, and to discuss the reliability and limitations of the various techniques, procedures, and instrumentation available. For more detailed discussion of methods, etc., the reader is referred to standard references.Sampling particulate solids.Sampling is a critical factor in any procedure for characterizing particulate materials — the reliability of characterization data is ultimately limited by the extent to which the sample used was truly represen¬tative of the population from which it was taken.Sampling from particulate solids involves two basic problems: (1) the selection of a random', unbiased sample and (2) choice of the appropriate sample size.The problem of sample selection involves the design of a sample collection procedure that ensures that every kind of particle in the population has the proper chance of being included in the sample without bias. Specific procedures such as the well-known cone-and-quarter technique have been developed and are discussed at length in the literature on particle characterization (Allen, 1981: Herdan, 1960: Gy, 1982)."

The Bureau of Mines is studying cupola ironmel technology with the objectives of conserving high-quality raw materials through substitution and productivity. In the research re-ported here, a ize was modified by a gas-fired melting and/or ing chamber into the stack above the level of the coke bed, for study as a prototype for a coal-fired melting chamber. The modified cupola, in which natural gas was used to partially replace foundry coke, was evaluated in several trial runs. Data were obtained on furnace performance, metal and slag chemistry, and scrubber waters as particulates. Results of the modified ion were compared to those of conventional cupola operation. Although this research was preliminary--since the ultimate goal is to use pulverized coal instead of yielded ample evidence that the melting rate of a cupola can be icantly increased with less than a increase in energy input. Other evidence suggests that melting of low-density scrap can be enhanced and that scrap containing undesirable and/or oxidizable elements can be appreciably upgraded. This work is continuing and will include the use of pulverized coal of low rank to assist in melting.

The New Orient mine, owned and operated by the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., has caused a great deal of comment and interest because of its unusual features and huge daily production. It is in Franklin County, Illinois, adjacent to the town of West Frankfort. The seam being mined is the Illinois No. 6 which in this locality is 9 to 12 ft. thick and lies approximately 500 ft. below the surface. Without fear of contradiction, it can be said that this is one of the largest coal mines in the world from a daily production standpoint. During 1928, New Orient produced 2,400,000 tons, which amounts to over 10,000 tons each day the mine operated that year. The mine is built for a capacity of 12,000 tons but has actually hoisted over 15,000 tons in one 8-hr, shift. This enormous production can perhaps be better visualized if it is realized that each day&apos;s operation depletes over two acres of coal. The general features of this mine have already been fully covered in a paper by George B. Harrington,&apos; President of the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co. In a paper of the nature of Mr. Harrington&apos;s, it was unnecessary to stress any particular phase of mining conditions, consequently the ventilation problems were touched upon but lightly. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe some of the problems which have been encountered in providing adequate ventilation for the mine. Ventilating Conditions The acreage allotted to New Orient mine has a length, north and south, of approximately 6 miles, and a width, east and west, of 2 to 4 miles. A number of important considerations caused the hoist shaft, air shaft and surface plant to be located near the southeast corner of the property, instead of near the center, as is usual. During the initial phase of the mine development, the mine was ventilated through these shafts, although there was a full realization that at some future date other shafts would be required.

Coal oil mixture (COM), a liquid fuel pro- duced by mixing together coal and heavy oil on the 50-50 basis, has been brought to a level of practical use in Japan, being actually employed by a oil fired system at Yokosuka Thermal Power Station of The Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. A COM Production Plant, built in Onahama which is located about 160 miles from Yokosuka, required COM to be transported by sea. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. therefore performed a series of studies to develop a spe- cialized COM carrier, the world&apos;s first of its kind. Long lasting high stability is of pri- mary importance to successful use of COM. Much have been done in the way of research on stability of COM in the static storage, and the mechanism of COM static: stability is almost completety known. On the other hand, the knowledge about the COM dynamic stability, such as the stability while being transported aboard the COM carrier at sea, is still limited at the moment. The motion of COM aboard the COM carrier and how COM would settle were studied by tests. A visualization test on the COM behavior under dynamic motion was also performed and the mechanism of COM dynamic stability was analysed. The tests showed that the ship rolling motion had @n effect of promoting the settling of coal content of COM in the cargo hold. And studies were also made to device a method for esti- mating the settling quantity of coal during sea Transportation.

ZrB2 was produced in batches of 4 to 6 Ib by interaction of ZrO2, B4C, B203, and carbon at around 2000°C in a simple graphite resistance furnace. Techniques of production are discussed and the final design of a suitable furnace is described in detail. Several other borides were made by the same technique and the process appears to have possibilities for commercial production. N seeking out new hard and refractory com- pounds, many researchers have turned to the investigation of the borides and excellent papers have been published on the properties of these compounds. Few papers, however, have appeared on the techniques and problems concerned with the production of these high temperature substances. This report describes progress made in developing a method for preparing zirconium diboride, ZrB2, on a pilot plant scale. The literature of the borides and other refractory hard metals recently has been reviewed, annotated, and classified so completely&apos; that it is needless to attempt such an outline here. It is enough to say that three borides of zirconium have been reported: ZrB, ZrB2, and ZrB12.2 ZrB2 is the most stable of these and is especially stable in the presence of carbon up to and including its melting point of around 3000°C. Like most borides, it can be prepared in several ways. It can be prepared by synthesis of the elements, but these are expensive and difficult to produce in a high state of purity. Obviously, production directly from the oxides would have decided economic advantages. In electrolytic production such as that of calcium boride,:&apos; the product is recovered as a sludge mixed with electrolyte; and separation of product from adhering electrolyte and regeneration of the electrolyte is an involved and difficult process. The work on borides was started on a small scale in 1948. Late in 1949, Naval Ordnance expressed a specific interest in ZrB2 and the project then centered on this compound. After the usual experimental work necessary in a new field, ZrB2 of good quality was produced by heating mixtures of B4C, ZrO2, B2O3, and carbon to a temperature of about 2000 °C in a resistance-type electric furnace. Over 100 lb was made for experimental use tests, and the method of production probably could be expanded into a commercial operation. A similar process has been described by Kieffer and coworkers.&apos; The main chemical problems were the development of proper charges to insure complete reduction of the elements, determination of the proper temperature range at which these reductions took place, and adoption of techniques necessary to pre- vent inclusion of such impurities as carbon and nitrides. The mechanical problems consisted of developing a simple practical furnace that would attain the high temperatures required and permit use of a controlled atmosphere when necessary and determining of suitable refractories. Both problems were solved by designing a crucible resistance furnace. Crucible Resistance Electric Furnace Attempts were first made to produce ZrB2 in an electric arc furnace, but such a furnace would not provide the degree of carbon control required for producing clean graphite-free borides, so it was decided to try working in a crucible. Obviously, the furnace would have to be constructed of graphite, as the temperatures required are too high for other refractories or heating elements. Crucibles were made by hollowing out segments of graphite electrodes, which were fitted with a cover and clamped between two electrodes so that the current passing through the thin wall of the crucible would generate heat, using the principle of the Helberger crucible furnace."? Preliminary tests with this type of furnace were encouraging and led to the furnace design shown in Fig. 1. The essential components were a thin-walled graphite crucible resting on a graphite block, which formed the lower electrode assembly, and a top electrode assembly swung from a pipe column making contact with the top of the crucible. The space around the crucible was filled with graphite prepared from waste electrodes crushed to about ¼ in. This packing had excellent insulating properties, both electrically and thermally, and could be removed easily and quickly from around the crucible by means of an industrial vacuum cleaner. The largest resistor crucibles were machined from 8 in. electrode stock and were 26 in. long, with a side wall Yi in. thick and a 1 in. bottom. Temperatures were determined optically by sighting down a 1 in. hole drilled longitudinally through the top electrode and the crucible cover. Sealing this hole at the top was a water-cooled brass sight-glass assembly, shown in Fig. 2. An opening was provided for a light flow of helium to keep the sight opening clear of smoke, and a glass prism above the sight glass changed the line of sight to the horizontal for easier reading. More recently, the prism and optical pyrometer were replaced by a photoelectric recording pyrometer. At first the charges were placed directly in the resistor crucible but this meant that everything had to be withdrawn from the furnace every time the charge was emptied. As we move towards the 21st Century there are several factors that will influence the markets and processing requirements for industrial minerals. Traditional markets for many industrial minerals in the developed world are frequently stagnant or decreasing because of their maturity or due to environmental factors such as reclamation, recovery of byproducts, and recycling. Some industrial minerals are greatly affected by these factors, while others are either immune to or have adapted successfully to meet these challenges. In the developing countries of the world, there is rapid market growth and resource exploitation. The future of specific mineral commodities in several markets will be discussed.

Para ello, la construcción de dicha refinería ha establecido una serie de reglas precisas basadas en el avance tecnológico y la acción contra el medio ambiente de los desechos. Es decir, la refinería fue diseñada y construida con la tecnología más moderna, garantizando que sus efluentes cumplan los requerimientos más exigentes de preservación del medio ambiente.

A produção de aço no mundo está a cada dia mais competitivo, com isso as indústrias siderúrgicas tem desenvolvidos projetos com foco na melhoria da qualidade dos aços e na redução dos custos dos processos de fabricação. Este trabalho descreve as melhorias realizadas no processo de lingotamento contínuo, com foco na redução do desvio de placas por desobstrução dos veios da MCC 2. Esta melhoria consistiu na modificação do sistema de controle e injeção de argônio dos veios durante o lingotamento. A implementação dessas ações propiciou um melhor controle na injeção de argônio no sistema de válvula gaveta, reduzindo significativamente as obstruções do veio por deposição de alumina. Hoje, com os resultados alcançados na MCC 2 perduramos entre as melhores práticas nacionais. O trabalho foi realizado sem investimento contribuindo com a redução do custo de transformação do aço em placa.

The inorganic nanotube halloysite (HNT) is a promising type of natural occurring filler for polymers. Its characteristics, such as high aspect ratio (10–50), small size, and high strength (elasticmodulus—140GPa) suggest that HNT shave a potential use in high-performance polymer nanocomposites. Compared to other nanoclays and nanosilica the relatively low content of hydroxyl groups on their surfaces makes HNTs relatively hydrophobic, although, sometimes, this is not sufficient for guaranty a good interfacial adhesion in composite systems. Further hydrophobic treatment is required to improve HNTs compatibility with polymer matrixes, maximizing interfacial interactions. In the present study, different percentages of EPB (2,2-(1,2-ethene diyldi-4,1-phenylene) bisbenzoxazole) was used to perform anon-covalent functionalization of halloysite, based on electron transfer interactions. The functionalization is characterized by specific surface area (BET), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and water/toluene extraction experiment.

The separation of radionuclide during rare earth element (REE) production is an important requirement for developing the Canadian REE mining industry. Separation of actinides from REE is often a large concern in the rare earth industry because of the need to manage the radioactive nuclides. A patented process developed for actinides extraction from radioactive wastes was applied to REE ore. Objectives were to optimize the process for REE leaching from ore, and separate radioactive impurities from sulphuric and nitric liquor by ion exchange (IX). Ore leaching was optimized using a surface response plan to ensure statistical significance. In optimized conditions, solubilization yields ranged from 90–95% for Th, 60–75% for U, 48–55% for LREE, and 59–75% for HREE in sulphuric and nitric media. Both media were compared for radionuclide removal from rich REE-bearing mineral liquor by IX. Actinides separation ranged from 92–97% for Th and 69–96% for U in sulphuric and nitric media.

FLUORSPAR, a little known non-metallic mineral, referred to technically as fluorite, chemically as calcium fluoride, is a compound of calcium and fluorine in the ratio of one molecule of calcium to two of fluorine. By weight it is composed of 51.3 per cent of calcium and 48.7 per cent of fluorine. Its specific gravity is 3.2. It is brittle, has a hardness of four and can be easily scratched with a knife. It weighs about 200 Ib. per cubic foot and has a melting point of 1650" F. The color of fluorspar ranges from pure white and opaque white, according to its purity, to various hues of yellow, green, pink, lavender, blue and brown, to bluish black. Although the lumps have color, when ground the fluorspar becomes pure white. The reason for this is because the mineral usually carries no fixed pigment, the color being produced by the re- fraction of light rays within the crystal structure and small quantities of organic matter which readily oxidizes. It crystallizes in the isometric system with perfect octahedral cleavages.

The Seismic Interactive Interpretation Workstation (IIW) integrates various sets of geophysical and geological data to form a network of information which is stored in a database. Computer models are generated from known drillhole information and later correlated with the processed seismic data. Seismic color processing adds another dimension to the interpretation process. Complex trace attributes provide better definition of subtle features not easily observed from black and white sections. Utilizing the computer workstation, the explorationist gains valuable insight and conducts more intelligent interpretation of seismic data through a more comprehensive network of data analysis.
