The mining complex being analyzed consists of four mines and two processing plants located in an area where there are several existing modes of transportation. Figure 1 shows a map of the general layout of the four proposed mines and the two existing processing plants. The mines are identified by the numerals "I" through "IV" and the plants by the letters "A" and "B". A proposed overland conveyor would collect the product from all four mines and convey it to Processing Plant A. Alternate transportation systems are as follows: Railroad transport from Mines I and II to Plant B; Highway trucking from Mines I and II to Plant A; Off-the-road truck haulage from Mine III to Plant B and from Mine IV to Plant A. River transportation from the mines to the processing plants was not considered in this study under the assumption that the high capital investments for the loading and unloading facilities, in addition to difficult traffic problems, would make this mode of transportation unattractive.

Members are advised that the Council has decided to change the format of the Journal from the present size to the standard international A4 size with effect from August, 1969. By making this change we will be conforming to more general practice today in regard to publications and this should effect certain economies and facilitate selling of advertising space. It has been arranged that in future the publication of the Journal, including advertisement sales, will be handled by Kelvin Publications (Pty.) Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Institutes. While making these changes, the opportunity is taken of redesigning the outer cover of the Journal to incorporate the new coat of arms. The Council trusts that these changes will meet with the approval of members.

As a part of a study of iron are resources in the Appalachians, 9 diamond drill holes aggregating 1,580.7 feet were drilled in a portion of the Butt Mountain area of northeastern Giles County, Virginia. Three hematitic sand-stone beds were intersected in the Clinton formation but only one was consistent in thickness and grade in all 9 drill holes. This bed averages 18.9 percent iron over an average thickness of 24 feet. The drill cores were logged and chemical analyses were made on 161 individual samples and 22 composite samples. Beneficiation studies were made of three composite hematitic sandstone samples each representing a separate bed containing 14.6, 19.8 and 20.0 per-cent iron. Major mineral constituents of the samples were hematite, quartz, and sericite.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the magnetic susceptibility of minerals as a function of mag-netic field strength to determine how it might affect the potential for high-field magnetic separation as an alternative to other separation technologies. Single-mineral concentrates were prepared from specimens from the same deposit to compare magnetic susceptibilities of minerals that occur together and from specimens from different deposits to compare magnetic susceptibilities of like minerals. A vibrating-sample magnetometer with a superconducting magnet capable of producing a magnetic field of 7.16 x 106 Aim (90 kOe) was used to measure the magnetic moment of the samples. The data were then converted to specific magnetic susceptibility data and plotted as a function of magnetic field strength. Cursory studies were also completed on the effects of iron content and oxidation roasts on magnetic susceptibility in high fields. The results showed that magnetic susceptibility is essentially constant in magnetic fields above those needed to saturate ferromagnetic constituents. Although magnetic susceptibility is influenced by iron content and by thermal treatment, the changes are not large enough to influence separations in fields above 1.59 x 106 Aim (20 kOe).

The abstract discusses the importance of predicting fire response time (the time before conditions become untenable for firefighters) in underground coal mines. It introduces a data-driven approach using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict response time and fire size based on measurable parameters like CO concentration, mine geometry, air velocity, and time since fire detection. The approach was tested using simulations from fire models (FDS and FSSIM), showing promising results for real-time predictions during mine fires.

Introduction No commercial deposits of silica sand are known to occur in British Columbia, so all requirements for foundry and other uses must be imported. During the war, nearly 5,000 tons per year were used, all originating in Illinois and delivered to local consumers for about $12.00 per ton. Present requirements are somewhat less, but the cost is still of the same order. The relatively high cost of silica sand in British Columbia is not only a serious item for present consumers, but might be a deterrent to the establishment of a glass industry, should this be contemplated at any time. The present investigation was undertaken in an attempt to provide a cheaper source of silica sand within the Province. In 1936, a large number of beach and bank sand deposits in the lower coastal region of British Columbia were examined by the British Columbia Department of Mines, and samples were analyzed chemically and mineralogically. The deposits over the whole area proved remarkably uniform in mineral composition, consisting essentially of quartz, feldspar, ferromagnesian minerals, rock fragments, and various accessory minerals, and differing only in the relative proportions of the various constituents. In no case did the quartz content of any sand exceed about 40 percent and the average was of the order of 20 to 30 percent.

A study was made by the Bureau of Mines of the penetration of selected granular materials in an unconfined state by wedge-shaped tools having dimensions comparable with the dimensions of the particles composing the materials. The output force for larger particles fluctuated radically. A custom-designed integrator was used to obtain work as a function of depth of penetration in the form of smooth curves. The influence of wedge angle, depth of penetration, penetration rate, entry angle, compaction state, and particle size on the force required and the work performed was ascertained. Empirical equations describing force and work as a function of penetration were obtained for each set of experiments.

Os aços maraging tem grande importância tecnológica devido sua aplicação nas industrias aeroespacial e nuclear. Uma das aplicações para esse material é a fabricação de cilindros de alta resistência pelo processo de estampagem profunda, logo o conhecimento da textura cristalográfica torna-se fundamental. Este trabalho investigou o efeito da laminação à frio seguida por um recozimento sobre a microestrutura, textura e anisotropia plástica no aço maraging 350. A anisotropia foi medida pelo cálculo dos coeficientes de Lankford e dos coeficientes de anisotropia normal (Rm) e planar (?R). Os resultados mostraram o aumento na deformação a frio gera um aumento na intensidade da fibra acompanhada de um aumento no valor de Rm. As análises metalográficas mostram que maiores reduções induzem à um precipitação intermetálica após o recozimento.

Stress-relief techniques and instrumentation have been developed through many years of research in the Bureau of Mines and successfully used to determine the in situ state of stress in rock. This report describes the Bureau's three-component borehole deformation gauge and the drilling equipment and accessories used with it. Operation and calibration procedures for the deformation gauge are discussed in detail, along with site selection and overcoring procedures. Information and references included in this publication provide a guide to the Bureau's cover-coring method for determining rock stress.

Um dos principais problemas enfrentados pelas aciarias é o descarte dos resíduos gerados durante a produção do aço. Além de se pagar pelo descarte em aterros monitorados, ocorre também a perda de elementos de liga, tais como Cr, Ni, Mo, V, etc. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a viabilidade de se aglomerar alguns resíduos gerados durante a produção do aço (lama de VOD/VD, poeira de forno panela e carepa de forjaria) na forma de pelotas autorredutoras e adiciona-las ao forno elétrico a arco (FEA). Primeiramente os resíduos foram misturados com finos de coque de petróleo e cimento. Após a pelotização e o período de cura, as pelotas autorredutoras foram fundidas num forno de indução (teste laboratorial), visando avaliar o nível de recuperação dos elementos de liga a partir dos resíduos. O rendimento dos elementos Cr, Ni e Mo variaram de 84% a 99% nos teste laboratoriais. Nos testes industriais envolvendo as pelotas autorredutoras de carepa de forjaria (aço ferramenta H13), os rendimentos dos elementos Cr, Mo e V variaram de 51%-92%, 94%-99% e 27,5%-88%, respectivamente.

"Industry practice for high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) assessment and sizing relies on tests using pilot-scale machines with 0.7–1.0 m roll diameters. Typically 1–10 t of sample are required, depending on the level of study and resource complexity. This is challenging during early-stage development, which hinders incorporating HPGR into designs. With support from the Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization, researchers at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at The University of British Columbia developed bench-scale piston–die press tests (PPTs) that correlate to pilot- and full-scale HPGRs. This paper describes a new regression model to estimate the HPGR-specific throughput rate using both PPT results and an HPGR database. The present trend of chemicometallurgical research toward widespread and inclusive use of thermodynamic methods requires the inclusion of available data of this sort in any comprehensive metallurgical report . Such data for manganese are far from adequate for the full utilization of these methods . Even if our knowledge of these properties is weak , the collection of available figures is nevertheless well worth while , especially if their utilization in an approximate way may show inherent possibilities of application . No less important is the necessity for discovering the vital gaps in the existing information , to serve as a basis for further pertinent study . The utility of the thermodynamic methods of Lewis and Randall ( 234 ) 3 has become increasingly evident to metallurgists . It is true that at present no better approach to the general , fundamental problems of chemical metallurgy is available than close adherence to these methods . The effort is here made to collect and correlate , as far as possible , significant quantitative thermodynamic data on manganese and its metallurgically important compounds . There are considered here only the intrinsic properties of pure materials . The order maintained as far as possible will be as follows :

Abstract The consumption of barytes in certain paints polyurethane foams, seamless, flooring, glass, brake linings, plastisol caskets for food containers and in fluids used for gastrointestinal X-ray examinations rely on tie unique properties of barium sulfate, There are no readily available mineral substitutes. Barytes are also the essential raw material for the manufacture of industrially important barium chemicals. High quality barite ore has become scarce throughout the world. Processing ore into quality end products is both capital and energy intensive. These factors have tended to limit availability and increase prices which have encouraged the use of alternates and restricted market growth.

The definition of geological/geostatistical domains is the first step in building a mineral resource model. A suitable division for these domains requires some prior knowledge about the deposit geology and can be supported by a careful statistical analysis. It is crucial that data with similar characteristics are grouped together, to avoid the mixing of statistical populations, defining the so-called stationary domains. In order to assist in this definition, two unsupervised clustering algorithms were applied: Otsu and K-means. The first one is widely used in image segmentation and it is based on the exhaustive search of the data to determine the best threshold for separating them. K-means is one of the most used techniques in machine learning, and it is based on the iterative analysis of the statistical distribution. Clustering algorithms may present some shortcomings when applied to geological data, since they are based on pure statistical analysis, not considering spatial distribution or data location. Choosing the most appropriate number of domains can also be challenging. Some methods for defining the best number of groups are presented, based on the analysis of variances between/inside groups, supported by indicators variography in order to verify this definition.

This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. The development of separation process for the wastewater treatment in distinct industrial process have been applied for recover water and inputs. Electrodialysis is an example of separation process that have been studied for electroplating wastewater treatment. The use of ion-exchange membranes and an electric energy allows the selectivity separation of ions in a solution. The 1-hydroxyethane-1,1diphosphonic acid HEDP is an organic acid that is has been applied for the cyanide substitution in electroplating baths, and in this condition the electrodialysis has showed recover potential. The ion-exchange membrane used in an electrodialysis process contain organic sample are exposed for extreme conditions. These conditions can provide degradation structure and loss of permselectivity, which causes unusual membrane properties. The aim of this study is evaluate the influence of CuHEDP complexes in synthetic ion-exchange membranes using electrochemical test.

Results are presented from a series of tests designed to determine the beneficial effects of the microorganism Thiobacillus ferrooxidans upon the leaching of uranium from a pyritic uranium ore. Minus 1-inch (-25mm) 0.0711 percent uranium containing, pyritic ore from the Rio Algom Mine at Elliott Lake, Canada was leached with lixiviants of various Eh and pH as well as being subjected to a biologically-assisted ferric iron leach. In all cases, the biological leach gave superior extraction. At pH 1.6, the biological leach gave 100.6 percent extraction and the ferric iron leach 69.8 percent. This improvement in extraction is associated with a relatively rapid biological breakdown of the pyritic material, thus liberating uranium mineralization associated with these pyritic materials and regenerating the ferric sulphate lixiviant in situ.

"Since the 1980s, China has become the predominant producer of REEs. Recently, it introduced REE export quotas and this started a world-scale REE exploration rush. REE resources are concentrated in carbonatite-related deposits, peralkaline igneous rocks, pegmatites, REE ± P veins, ion adsorption clays, placers, and some deep ocean sediments. REEs could also be derived as a by-product of phosphate fertilizer, U processing, Ti-Zr-bearing placers, and exploitation of Olympic Dam-type sub-type of IOCG deposits. The ideal REE development target would be located in a politically stable jurisdiction such as Canada. REE grade and tonnage, mineralogy, and permissive metallurgy are some of the key technical factors that could be used to screen projects. INTRODUCTIONAccording to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the term “rare earth elements” (REEs) encompasses yttrium (Y), scandium (Sc), and the lanthanide series: lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), promethium (Pm), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb), and lutetium (Lu). This definition is used throughout this paper.REEs are subdivided into light (LREE) and heavy (HREE) categories. LREEs include, Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd and HREE include Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and Y. Promethium (Pm) does not occur in nature. Concentrations of individual LREEs in the upper crust of the Earth are comparable to those of base metals. Even the least abundant REE (Lu) is about 200 times more abundant than gold.The production of REEs, reported in the form of oxides (REOs), for 2011 is estimated at 140 000 t (Figure 1a). Although high technology industries can substitute several REEs with other materials, these substitutes are typically more expensive or less effective than the REEs they replace. A number of countries, including the United States, consider several REEs essential for national security, their economy, and a general reduction in green house gas emissions. The forecasted demand for individual LREOs is much higher than that of HREOs (Figure 2). Dy, Eu, Tb, Nd, and Y are essential for the US economy and subject to predicted supply disruptions (U.S. Department of Energy, 2010)."
