By 1980, the free world's need for economic sources of energy is expected to double. As a result, there will be a tremendous potential for all energy sources working together to supply the demand. For coal to continue its dominant role as a low-cost energy source, means must be found for it to meet the challenge of nuclear power and to overcome obstacles placed on its use by air and water pollution regulations. As the more limited reserves of gas and oil diminish, economic ways are also required for converting coal to synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels, and to chemicals, thus resulting in optimum utility of the most abundant low-cost fuel resource. The means for accomplishing these ends can only come about by a vigorous research and development program. Successful efforts by industry and government working together, both in America and abroad, will assure the continued use of coal to meet the world's energy demands. This paper discusses the emerging patterns of energy sources throughout the world and the role that research and development on coal will play in supplying future energy requirements.

"In the present work, two-step heat treatments with preheating treatments at different temperatures (175, 250 and 330°C) as the first step followed by the peak precipitation treatment (375°C/48h) as the second step have been performed in Al-Mn-Mg 3004 alloys to study their effects on the formation of dispersoids and evolution of elevated-temperature strength and creep resistance. During the two-step heat treatments, the microhardness is gradually increasing with increasing time until to a plateau after 24 hours when first-treated at 250°C and 330°C while there is a minor decrease with time at 175°C. Results show that both the yield strength and creep resistance at 300°C reach the peak values after the two-step treatment of 250°C/24h+375°C/48h. The formation of dispersoids is greatly related to the type and size of pre-existing Mg2Si precipitated during the preheating treatments, in which that coarsened rod-like ß’-Mg2Si strongly promotes the nucleation of dispersoids while finer needle-like ß’’-Mg2Si has less influence. Under optimized two-step heat treatments and modified alloying elements, the yield strength at 300°C can reach as high as 97 MPa with the minimum creep rate of 2.2×10-9 s-1 at 300°C in Al-Mn-Mg 3004 alloys, enabling them as one promising candidate in lightweight aluminum alloys for elevated-temperature applications.INTRODUCTION Due to the rapid demand from weight-sensitive automotive and aerospace industrials for the light alloys, such as aluminum alloy on the elevated-temperature applications, Al-Mn 3xxx alloys has been developed to obtain the good properties at both room temperature (RT) and elevated temperature, in which the dispersoid-strengthening mechanism plays a significant role (Li & Arnberg, 2003; Li, Muggerud, Olsen & Furu, 2012; Liu & Chen, 2015, 2015). In our previous works (Liu & Chen, 2015, 2015; Liu, Ma & Chen, 2017), the yield strength and creep resistance at 300°C of Al-Mn-Mg 3004 alloy were further improved by modifying the alloying elements, such as Fe and Mo, to optimize the characters of dispersoids, including the size, distribution and the dispersoids free zone (DFZ). For instance, Mo was introduced in aluminum alloy to further improve the volume fraction of dispersoids and reduce the area of DFZ, leading to increasing on both the strength and creep resistance at 300°C (Liu, Ma & Chen, 2017). On the other hand, the mechanical properties became worse at higher Fe content due to its consumption more Mn to form Al6(MnFe) intermetallics, resulting in less available soluted Mn for the precipitation of dispersoids (Liu & Chen, 2015). Therefore, optimizing the characters of dispersoids is always the key to improve the elevated-temperature properties of dispersoid-strengthened aluminum alloys for elevated-temperature applications."

Cannington Mine has been developing through paste backfilled stopes since the year 2000. These paste drives have been used as either production drill accesses or long-term bypasses. Prior to this study, the ground support requirements for each paste development cut were: an initial 50 mm layer of fibrecrete, weld mesh bolted with 2.4 m split sets, followed by a second coat of 50 mm fibrecrete. Both layers of fibrecrete and the layer of mesh were to be installed before the next cut could be bored and fired. This support regime proved successful at Cannington, however, the total cycle time for each cut was lengthy due to the installation and curing times associated with each layer of surface support. In an effort to reduce the cycle time a study was carried out, with the aid of RocScience’s Phase2 numerical modelling software. The modelling reviewed all of the parameters controlling the stability of a newly excavated development cut. The parameters studied included the early strength of fibrecrete, the ground support load capacity, and the strength of the paste fill masses which varies depending on the cement content. As a result of the study, the ground support standard was revised. The revision has significantly decreased the cycle time as well as fibrecrete consumption, all the while maintaining the safety of personnel and equipment.

Modern mining companies are increasingly turning to integrate digital technologies and circular economy (CE) principles to increase the sustainability of their operations. The so-called “mine of the future” is envisioned as a smart, integrated system where technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, and real-time data analytics work in harmony with human decision-making and environmental responsibility. Already in 2018, McKinsey and Co. identified that the three drivers that would define a technology-enabled change in mining would be technology, including digital, analytics and automation, management systems able to identify the potential and value of the new technologies, and the culture and capabilities of the organisation, leaning to more agile and responsive organisations. From the three drivers, in the last five years most developments have been centred in the first one. Yet despite rapid advances, the adoption of new technologies across the industry today remains uneven and often slower than expected. Furthermore, it has been identified that the problem on the technology uptake often relay on the lack of operational readiness, process incompatibility or misalignment, and resistance to change within the mining operation. At the same time, leading companies like Rio Tinto, BHP, and Anglo American have each launched major digital transformation programs. Rio Tinto, for instance, operates one of the world’s largest autonomous mining fleets and has integrated digital technologies across nearly all its operations (Rio Tinto, 2025). BHP is actively investing in information and communication technology (ICT) development as artificial intelligence, big data analytics and robotics, and has partnered with battery companies to pursue circular economy initiatives. Only in 2024, their ICT spending reached US$ 438.3 million (Global Data, 2024). Anglo American has rolled out its FutureSmart Mining™ framework, explicitly aligning innovation with circularity and sustainability goals (Anglo American, 2025). The accelerating pace of change across leading mining companies along with the uneven adoption in the technology uptake clearly state how digital transformation is no longer just about implementing new tools, instead it requires a fundamental shift in how people, processes, and culture are aligned. Addressing only the technical layer, while neglecting the human and organizational dimensions, leaves transformation efforts fragile and unsustainable. As the industry must act decisively to close this gap, the true test of transformation is today centred in changing behaviours, mindsets, and systems. Even at the listed leading companies, initiatives have encountered cultural and structural resistance that are relatable to the industry in large: siloed departments fail to collaborate, procurement teams focus on upfront costs rather than lifecycle value, and operators are often excluded from early-stage planning, reducing buy-in. In many cases, a lack of communication or failure to link technology to real operational bottlenecks leads to disengagement at the ground level. This friction reveals a broader issue: mining organizations have historically treated technology and culture as separate domains, when in fact they are deeply interdependent. To address this, the authors propose a systems engineering approach focusing on the mining operations as a complex socio-technical system composed of people, processes, and technologies. Systems engineering offers tools and frameworks for mapping interactions, aligning incentives, designing for feedback and adaptation, and integrating change across organizational boundaries. Specifically, besides technical requirements, it demands treating culture not as an afterthought or side-effect, but as a design variable that must be intentionally shaped alongside infrastructure and workflows. This paper explores how this approach can be applied in practice, by analysing a real-world case scenario where resistance to innovation was overcome not by technical capabilities alone, but through alignment of stakeholder incentives, thoughtful communication, and cultural integration. A particular focus is set on the adoption journey of the Powerbit X, a drill bit technology with significant potential for operational and environmental gains.

In 1967 the United States consumed 58.8 quadrillion Btu of energy. Both the Atomic Energy Commission and the Resources for the Future, Inc., a private economic forecasting group, predict that the United States energy requirements will reach 135 quadrillion Btu by the year 2000. In 1967 bituminous coal produced 21.4 percent of the energy used in the United States and anthracite coal another 0. 5 percent. Coal Reserves Coal reserves make up about four-fifths of the United States storehouse of fuel in proven reserves. Seventy-five percent of all fuel, likely to be found and recovered is coal. Electric utilities consume more than half of the bituminous coal mined in the United States in generating 53 percent of the nation's electricity. Atomic Energy Commission analysts have proposed the development of a vast "national energy system" based upon long-distance electrical transmission from abundant untapped coal reserves in the western United States. The study predicts that even if uranium supplies are available and economic breeder reactors developed, coal requirements for electricity generation will more than double by 1980 and increase another 50 percent before the year 2000.

Increased catch bench crest loss has been observed in recent years at Barrick’s Cowal Gold Mine situated in central New South Wales, Australia. A project was initiated to diagnose the cause of the crest loss, and evaluate ways to limit its effect on final walls.A range of different blast measurement techniques were utilised to evaluate the progressive damage caused to catch berms by presplit, production and trim blasts. Techniques employed included; single point vibration measurement, cross-hole seismic analysis, precision berm surveys, horizontal p-wave velocity measurements, crest loss volume calculation and water level changes between blasts.Blast measurements showed that the majority of damage to the catch berm was caused by the presplit blasts, which registered vibrations greater than 700 mm/s at 5 m behind the presplit line. As a result, considerable changes were made to the blast designs after a series of computer simulations via mechanistic blast modelling (MBM). The uncharged presplit collar was increased from 2 m to 4 m, and every second hole was left uncharged. Vibration modelling using a multiple seed wave (MSW) model was used to optimise trim blast delay timing. Burden relief was changed from 16 ms/m to 27 ms/m using one hole firing per 4 ms time window, and the initiation angle was changed from shallow to steep. These changes in the presplit loading and trim timing helped reduce catch bench crest loss by 1–2 m.Trim shots using a high strength bulk emulsion explosive were also identified as contributors to berm damage after analysis of blast monitoring and MBM modelling. The modelling study resulted in the generation of alternative blast designs to minimise the crest loss, including the use of low-density/low-velocity of detonation (VOD) bulk explosive product (Flexigel™ Advantage) in trim pattern designs. This was trialled on the Northern and Eastern pit walls to evaluate the damage to catch berms on final walls. The trials demonstrated that berm vibration was reduced significantly; fragmentation was similar (or slightly blockier) compared to the fragmentation using the old blast designs; displacement of the berm was reduced, so increased catch bench widths were attained. In a minerals-recovery context, the object of exercising control over milling operations must be threefold, 1) To achieve maximum recovery at 2) minimum operating costs and 3) making maximum use of installed equipment, Milling is one of a sequence of operations which have as their objective the economic recovery of minerals from mined ores, All operations in the sequence are interdependent and each is both influenced by and itself affects all other unit processes. The part which grinding plays in achieving each of the above objectives is indicated in the following analysis: In South Africa, the most important mining operations are still the gold mines, A vast reservoir of knowledge and experience in treating the Witwatersrand and associated ores has been accumulated. and recoveries are consistently high, However residue values do vary and frequently this is due to fluctuations in the degree of grind, The significance of changes in residue values is indicated by the following example: On a modern mine, the residue values varied from 0,25 to 0,33 dwi; per 2000 lb, during a period of 6 months, The cash value of the gold thus lost varied therefore between $0.44 and $0.58 per 2000 lb, ton. A residue which assays 0.30 dwt per ton would contain approximately 0.26 dwt as undissolved gold and 0,040 dwt per ton as dissolved gold present in residual solution after filtration. This dissolved gold loss is a function of efficiency of filtration and varies from 0.030 to 0,.070 dwt per ton of residue.

O processo de pelotização foi desenvolvido com a finalidade de aproveitar as partículas finas e ultrafinas geradas nas operações de exploração e tratamento do minério de ferro. Os principais minérios que alimentam as usinas de Pelotização de Tubarão/Vitória/ES são provenientes das minas Brucutu, Fábrica Nova, Alegria, Conceição e Cauê. Os estudos de caracterização mineralógica e testes tecnológicos são realizados para auxiliar o processamento de minérios. Entretanto, alguns minérios possuem grande variabilidade de participação de minerais em sua composição, gerando necessidade de ajustes no processamento dos mesmos. Ter a previsibilidade mineralógica dos minérios é muito importante para atuar no processo com antecedência, realizando ajustes operacionais caso necessário, a fim de ganhar qualidade e reduzir custos. O método de cálculo normativo mineralógico é uma técnica nova que utiliza os resultados de análise química como base para quantificar minerais presentes no minério de ferro. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi avaliar a aplicabilidade da metodologia de cálculo mineralógico normativo por meio de correlação com a microscopia ótica. As amostras analisadas foram pellet feed das minas de Fábrica Nova, Alegria e Brucutu. O estudo mostrou que existem diferenças entre as técnicas, entretanto os resultados foram promissores e satisfatórios.

Depending upon the needs of the operator or inspector, the services provided can range from locating major noise sources to actually building noise controls. Over the years a vast amount of knowledge has been obtained as to what will work and what will not. DESIGN GOALS While many noise controls have been developed for mining equipment and operations, the most acceptable (ergo successful) have achieved the following design goals: - a noise level reduction of at least 5 decibels; - minimum interference with production; - inexpensive to install; and - effective in reducing low frequency noise.

Though the title may border on the dramatic, it illustrates the real consequences of alternative approaches to property management viewed from my experience in the evaluation, development and implementation of a number of such systems and services in my current position as president of Talco Group Corporation. Modelos de transferência de calor possibilitam o conhecimento de espessura da camada solidificada e temperatura da placa, essenciais para alterações no processo visando melhoria de qualidade. Neste estudo foi desenvolvido um modelo pelo método 2½ D, que consiste em acompanhar em toda extensão da máquina uma secção transversal da placa, ajustando as condições de contorno para cada região. Medições de temperaturas superficiais e de espessura da camada de aço solidificada da placa foram utilizadas para validação do modelo. O modelo foi adequado para as condições de contorno e parâmetros da máquina de lingotamento contínuo de placas da Gerdau Ouro Branco visando fornecer subsídios para a melhoria da qualidade superficial e interna das placas.

In 1984 and 1985, as part of its critical and strategic minerals studies, the Bureau of Mines investigated lode and placer tin occurrences near Rocky Mountain (Lime Peak), in east-central Alaska. The lode occurrences consist of mineralogically complex, generally fault-controlled veins, and contain an average of approximately 0.05 pct Sn, as cassiterite. Beneficiation testing of two bulk samples of the vein material produced concentrates containing 65 and 59 pct of the total tin values at grades of 0.35 and 13.9 pct, respectively. Although as much as 30 million short tons (MMst) of mineralized rock containing up to 20 MMlb Sn may be present, the grade of these occurrences is too low to be considered economic at this time. Trace amounts of cassiterite were also identified in surface samples of glacial out-wash gravels collected along North Fork Preacher Creek, which partially drains the area of tin lode deposits near Lime Peak. Low tin grades in the samples do not account for the former erosion of a large volume of lode tin mineralization from near Lime Peak; higher tin grades may be present in gravels closer to bedrock.

Rare earth elements and critical minerals have recently become of great economic interest because of their necessity for many new technologies and recent geopolitical unrest affecting the supply and import of resources. The San Juan and Raton basins in northern New Mexico are two structural coal basins that contain elevated concentrations of rare earth elements and critical minerals. These two New Mexican coal basins will be assessed geochemically and petrographically to identify vectors of the rare earth element and critical mineral enrichment. Coalbeds, coal seams, overlying, and underlying rock units will be sampled and characterized to determine any economic viability. Historic data will be compiled into a new and comprehensive coal geochemical database, which will grow with new analyses, and serve as the dataset for this project; this coal resource database will be made available to the public.

Reducing costs while maintaining productivity and achieving good results is a constant challenge in mining operations, especially in the drilling and blasting stage, since a bad blast can affect production plans, increase costs, affect safety and jeopardizing the pit stability. Examples of undesirable blasting effects are: flyrocks, boulders, loading equipment damages, lower production rates, etc. In some of the biggest open pit mines using conventional blasting patterns visited by the authors, the pattern does not adjust properly to the rock mass, in most cases blasting polygons are large and the rock mass condition is variable within the designed blasting pattern. On the other hand, conventional blasting patterns with stemming columns use 40-50% of the blast hole with inert material (the stemming). Moreover, blasting engineers spend efforts to improve fragmentation results by increasing explosive charge in spite of having the negative effect of ground vibrations, with little or no success. The classic approach is "the more explosive in, the better the fragmentation is", furthermore it is assumed this relation is direct and infinite, but it is definitely wrong. This work challenges the notion of a limitless direct relationship between explosive charge and fragmentation, this means this is partially true but just up to a certain limit. In other words, there is still room to improve energy distribution among the classical blasting techniques without increasing the explosive energy by using air decks. In the work to be presented air decks are built using conical shaped stemming plugs called Paraplug®. The results obtained suggests a wedge effect acts in the bottom of the stemming column that cushions the shock wave and the air deck to reduce the detonation pressure (this is due to the decoupling factor resulted from the air deck). The demonstration shows improvements in fragmentation results, reduced vibration records accompanied with lower dust column and costs savings in explosive charge.

In 2009, the Queensland Government developed a series of amendments to environmental authorities (EAs) for mines throughout the Fitzroy Basin in response to studies that assessed the cumulative impacts of mine water discharges in the basin. One of the key amendments was the requirement for all mines in the Fitzroy Basin to develop and implement a receiving environment monitoring program (REMP). The intent of the REMPs was to provide baseline information on the condition of the receiving environments of the mines and any impacts resulting from release of mine-affected water. Since this time, the requirement to complete a REMP has been incorporated into new or revised EAs for mines (including metalliferous mines) in other regions, as well as for other industries that discharge to natural watercourses (such as coal seam gas). This paper discusses the approaches that can be used to incorporate biological monitoring and direct toxicity assessments into REMPs. It highlights the importance of collecting biological data using sound experimental design principles to investigate whether releases resulted in environmental harm; and the use of monitoring data, coupled with direct toxicity assessments, for setting more realistic, site-specific trigger values and release limits (compared to the default guidelines such as Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC), which may not be appropriate to the region). Implementation of a robust REMP can maximise outcomes for both the proponents and the environment.CITATION:Thorburn, L, 2013. "A low-grade nickel-bearing ore was pre-concentrated on a SB40 laboratory model Falcon Concentrator. Three size fractions, -212+125, -125+75 and -75 µm were tested with the intent to upgrade the nickel content by reducing their content of fine silica, which becomes amorphous during leaching. Separation of silica from nickel-bearing magnesium silicate minerals; hornblende, clinochlore and talc, was more efficient in the finer particle sizes, -125+75 and -75 µm, and at high G-forces. For these two size fractions, nickel was upgraded from 0.06 to 0.07%, with a reduction in silica content from 52.12 to 50.71%. Leaching of feed samples prior to pre-concentration resulted in the formation of amorphous silica, indicative of the presence of fine silica in the samples. Leaching of nickel from the -125+75 µm fraction increased with increasing G-force and feed pulp percent solids, while that of -75 µm was not influenced. The optimum nickel recovery was 15.68% to the Falcon underflow, using the feed size fraction of -75 µm, 30 G and a feed pulp solids content of 10% solids, after 120 minutes of treatment.INTRODUCTION A low-grade South African nickel-bearing ore with about 0.06% Ni was previously studied for atmospheric pressure acid leaching using sulphuric acid. The study was motivated by the continuing search for methods to treat of low-grade ores, which appear to be an increasingly important source of valuable metals as a result of a declining production from rich sulphide ores. Nickel is a base metal that is used as an alloy in steelmaking and chemical industries because of its resistance to corrosion (Haudet et al., 2015). Nickel laterite ores with grades lower than 1.50% Ni are considered to be complex ores, accounting for 70% of the global nickel reserves (MacCarthy et al., 2016). Their complex nature may be attributed to the indefinite mineralogy of these ores, in which nickel may occur in more than one mineral host. In some cases, nickel may be finely disseminated in the ore. The grade of such an ore and complex mineralogy do not justify the application of pyrometallurgical methods for extraction of nickel (Zhu et al., 2012). This suggests that there is a need for less expensive alternative methods of extraction. This study investigates the application of centrifugal gravity concentration, using the Falcon concentrator, followed by leaching to determine the effect of pre-concentration of the ore prior to extraction by atmospheric pressure leaching with sulphuric acid."

The technique of reclaiming disturbed land by use of a hydraulic dredge pump (HDP) (which is a set of hydraulic machines for earthwork), termed 'digging deep to fill shallow has been used in the reclamation of subsidence areas in Chinese coal mines. This paper discusses the operational principle of the technique and summarises its reclamation procedures, which are being used in current reclamation practice. The soil condition reclaimed by the HDP was studied. The results showed that the pioneer crops to be planted in the reclaimed soil should be the ‘pulse’ family crops, and that improvements to the reclaimed soil and the HDP technique itself are needed. Bused on the analysis of the previous technical processes, a new rational technical model for the HDP reclamation method is presented in this paper.

Electro recovery by amalgam methods was investigated to determine the feasibility of recovering pure cadmium from cadmium sponge produced during purification of zinc electrolyte at electrolytic zinc plants . Actual material used in this work was air- oxidized cadmium sponge . An acid rinse and zinc displacement technique was developed to amalgamate this oxidized cadmium . ( In - plant use of the recovery process would probably not require this step because of the fresh state of the sponge . ) Zinc was completely removed from amalgamated sponge by selective oxidation with air . Zinc - free cadmium amalgam was circulated by an electromagnetic pump through an electrolytic cell where cadmium of 99.9+ percent purity was electrodeposited onto a rotating aluminum cathode . Polarographic methods were developed for determining cadmium and zinc in mercury and in sulfuric acid solution .
