Energy costs are steadily increasing worldwide while the availability and quality of water are becoming contentious issues between the users (municipalities/households, agriculture, manufacturing and mining). Refractory gold ore treatment - pressure oxidation, biological oxidation and roasting (ultra-fine grinding, or UFG, will not be discussed here as this process only reduces the particle size of the feed prior to cyanidation) - requires substantially more energy and water quantity and quality are vastly different compared to the standard and simple flow sheets used for treating non-refractory ores This paper will provide an overview of the energy and water requirements for treating refractory gold ores, a topic which does not appear to have been considered previously in the literature.CITATION:Roberto, F, Snyder, J, Dodd, J and Dunne, R, 2013. Na manufatura de produtos metálicos, o forjamento é o processo de transformação a quente de materiais dúcteis, como aços e ligas, através de conformação mecânica efetuada com esforço de compressão por uma prensa, de modo que eles assumam os formatos desejados. Este processo normalmente é utilizado para produzir peças de formas complexas e com uma maior precisão dimensional de acordo com a especificidade exigida pelo cliente final. Para obter resultados de qualidade, foi necessária a implantação de técnicas de medição indireta de última geração, que proporcionam ganho de tempo e a redução de desperdício de energia e material, além de aumentar a segurança, reduzindo a presença de pessoas próximas aos materiais para medições manuais. O presente trabalho trata da criação de um sistema de visão que, por meio de análise de imagem, é capaz de coletar a medida do perfil de barras em uma Forjaria em tempo real, podendo ser utilizado durante a operação da prensa, para garantir que o material está em conformidade com o especificado. A execução do sistema em produção aponta que as medidas realizadas apresentam desvio máximo de 2mm em relação àquelas realizadas pelos operadores.

THE iron deposits of central Labrador occur within a relatively small area, herein called the Knob Lake Iron Range, in which a northwest-trending series of low hills and ridges defines the height-of-land at the boundary between provinces of Quebec and Newfound-land. Approximately two-thirds of the deposits are in Quebec and the remainder in Labrador, with several deposits straddling the inter-provincial boundary. These deposits are being exploited in open-pit mines by the Iron Ore Company of Canada centered at Schefferville, Quebec. Since 1954 this company has produced more than 56 million tons of iron ore to become Canada's leading iron ore producer. With indicated reserves of more than 375 million tons of direct-shipping ore and large tonnages of iron formation amenable to beneficiation, this mining district is assured of a long life. This paper describes the Knob Lake iron ores and their geological settings and stresses the features that lead to a better understanding of their origin. The

The performances of four anthracite-burning stokers have been observed under identical 74-hp. steam boilers. Fifty runs of 12 and 24 hours' duration were made in accordance with the test code of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The capacity of each stoker for burning anthracite has been determined, the heat efficiency at each fuel rate has been computed, and the various significant items of hear loss have been estimated. The operating data and results from each run are tabulated in this report in the form used in the test code. The heat efficiencies and most significant operating data for each run are also presented graphically for each stoker to establish the trends with increasing boiler outputs, The tests show that rice anthracite can be burned on stokers adapted to its use at heat-conversion efficiencies of 82 percent or more under continuous firing. These high efficiencies are maintained with fuel inputs 30 percent higher and lower than the peak efficiency rate. Moreover, a heat efficiency of 70 percent or more is obtained at 50 percent of the optimum fuel rate, even though the excess air into the furnace cannot be held below 150 percent.

In recent years there has been a considerable amount of research work done relative to the effect of pretreatment and aging in water on the surface properties of both simple metal oxides and more complex oxides such as the silicate minerals 1-6. Of particular interest is the work of Somasundaran6 who states that after preparing minerals by size reduction and washing with dilute acids "... it is essential to treat it (the mineral) with water in order to remove any effects of leaching itself." Somasundaran also states, "... it is advisable to use a solution close to the point of zero charge for conditioning purposes." Parksl notes that, "Dehydration, dehydroxylation, and increased crystallinity can be expected to decrease the PZC. The presence of anionic impurities or of pH-independent potential determining ions will decrease the PZC. Cationic species will increase the PZC." Healy and Jellett4 believe that in the Zn0-water system "the surface charge of Zn0 in water and each pH is determined by the concentration and adsorption of each hydrolyzed (charged and uncharged) Zn(II) species." Finally, according to Parks 2, "The PZC of an unaltered com¬plex oxide in a system devoid of specific electrolytes is approximately the average of the PZC's of its component oxides... Equilibration with water results in loss of mono and divalent cations by exchange with H+, thus a loss of influence on the PZC by those cations, i.e., a shift in the PZC with time in the direction of that remaining oxide. The present paper investigates the change of point of zero charge (PZC) of a number of simple oxides and several complex oxides as a function of aging time in water. In some cases acid pretreatment of minerals was performed. However, in most cases the minerals were not acid pretreated. In several systems pH change as a function of aging time in water was monitored.

It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best ægrade descriptorÆ is discussed.

This paper reviews briefly the gravity recovery involving conventional gravity separators and centrifugal gravity separators. The advantages of semi-continuous gravity separators will be discussed. Techniques for upgrading the gravity concentrates will be addressed briefly. The research efforts in optimizing semi-continuous gravity separators will be recalled. Innovative gravity circuit for eliminating or minimizing the use of complex processing schemes will be reviewed. On-going gold gravity research at COREM has revealed that gold particle shape transformation is the main factor explaining the lower recoveries of the plant units. Efforts to devise possible remedies for improving gravity recovery at plant will be discussed.

Two-phase Pb-Sn alloys, ranging in compositiotz from 12 to 26 at. pct Pb, were unidirectionally solidified in a convection-fvee system, with thermal gradients in the liquid of up to 480°C per cm. Plane front solidification Loas achieved in all alloys at sufficiently steep gradient and slow growth rate. Conditions causing breakdown of the interface to a cellular or dendritic structure were roughly as predicted by a sinlple constitutional supercooling criterion. Structures of alloys of near-eutectic composition, solidified with plane front, exhibited a lamellar structure; the alloys furthest from the eutectic exhibited a rod-like morphology. Assumptions used in a previous paper for calculations of solute redistribution in two-phase plane front growth are shown to be reasonable for Pb-Sn alloys. Results of calculations are in good agveement with experiment. These show that variations in growth rate during solidification of the composite produce marked changes in average composition of the solid. IN a previous paper, Part I,' conditions necessary for plane front solidification of two-phase alloys were discussed and calculations given on solute redistribution in this type of solidification. This paper, Part 11, describes experiments on Pb-Sn alloys, designed to check the assumptions of the analyses presented, and to demonstrate their applicability to a given alloy system (Pb-Sn). APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE General. A vertical crystal growing unit was built for the study as described below, and "normal solidification" employed throughout (i.e., the ingot was completely melted except for a portion near the bottom end and then solidification initiated). The furnace was designed to permit achieving very low interface velocities, and steep gradients, in essential absence of convection; it is sketched in Figs. 1 and 2. Simple heat flow considerations indicated choice of a small-diameter specimen (ingot) to achieve high thermal gradients; ingot size chosen was 0.3 cm in diam. The ingots were held inside silica tubes 0.06 cm wall thickness. The requirement for an essentially convection-free system was met by use of the vertical furnace with the heat source over the heat sink, as well as by use of the small diameter ingots. In addition, by selection of tin-rich Pb-Sn alloys, the diffusion boundary layer (lead-rich) was denser than the bulk liquid and would not cause convection. The only apparent driving force for convection in this system was the small transverse temperature gradient resulting from heat flow into the samples from the furnace. Such convection must have been small, however, since 1) no temperature fluctuations in the melt were noted in the recordings, which would have indicated turbulent convection, and 2) experimental results obtained and described below could not have been achieved in presence of significant convection. Ingot Preparation. Pb-Sn alloys ranging from 12 to 26 at. pct Pb were prepared from high-purity lead and tin (99.9999 pct pure metal). Each alloy was prepared by first melting the pure metals in the proper ratio in air, in a Pyrex container. The melt was then stirred thoroughly with a graphite rod and cast into a preheated graphite mold. Ingots were then prepared from these castings for use in the actual experiments; each ingot consisted of a rod of alloy, 15 cm long in a 25-cm-long transparent fused-silica tube, 0.3 cm ID and 0.06 cm wall thickness. One chromel-alumel thermocouple, made with 0.004-in.-diam wire and protected by a two-hole alumina tube, was inserted into each ingot. The 1.5 cm of the thermocouple nearest the bead were protruding from the alumina tube and were coated with a very thin layer of boron nitride paste which provided electrical insulation while allowing good heat conduction. The electrically welded junction size was about that of each wire and the cross section of the two wires represented about 0.3 pct of the sample cross section. Opencast mining method is one of the most productive mining methods available at present, which is generally associated with the removal and handling of a huge amount of overburden material. Hence it imposes a serious challenge of dump slope stability and that too, mainly in the case of internal dumps. The study is primarily focused on the stability of dragline dumps and the subsequent development of a rating system to classify the stability of dragline dump profiles. Initially, numerical simulation is executed through RS2 (Version 9.0) software, which is based on the finite element method. Thereafter, simulation results are used to perform the sensitivity analysis of various geometrical and strength parameters of the dump slope, and the two-factor interaction method is also incorporated into the analysis, this method included the dependency of closest parameters while calculating the sensitivity index, and thereafter, it is converted into the rating of each parameter. The strength parameter like the angle of friction and the geometrical parameter like slope angle of the bench between the coal-rib roof and dragline sitting level are assigned the highest rating value. Based on the overall rating of the dragline dump, the dump slopes are classified into various classes, viz., very safe, safe, vulnerable, unstable, and highly unstable. This classification proved to be handy in the quick estimation of the stability of the dragline dump and also gives an idea of designing optimum and safe dragline dump profiles. The developed classification chart has been validated by the previous research works and has found similar results.

"Spodumene, feldspar and quartz possess similar surface properties, which make the difficult to separate spodumene from other silicate minerals by flotation. The differences of crystal structure, surface property and floatability of three minerals were studied by various technical means. The results show that Li-O and Al-O bonds in spodumene structure are not strong and easy to be broken. However, Al-O and Si-O bonds in feldspar and Si-O bond in quartz are very strong and not easy to be broken. High contents of Al and Li on spodumene surface were found by XPS measurements, which is benefit for the adsorption of anionic collector. The surface energies of main cleavage planes of spodumene (110), feldspar (001) and quartz (001) are 1.88 J/m2, 2.97J/m2 and 2.68J/m2, respectively. Hence, the exposed surfaces of feldspar and quartz are not saturated and easy to adsorb OH- ions from solution and cause the lower IEP than spodumene. The contact angles of three minerals in water are lower than 16º, suggesting that the hydrophilicity of three minerals is high, and the order of hydrophilicity is quartz > feldspar >spodumene. Correspondingly, contact angles and flotation recoveries of spodumene are bigger than that of feldspar and quartz in presence of a combined anionic and cationic collector named YOA.INTRODUCTION Flotation technology plays most important role for the recovery of spodumene from pegmatite ore. Generally, spodumene with fresh surface is easy to be floated using soap and oleic acid as collector, and the best flotation pH range is 4.0 to 9.0. However, the flotability of spodumene will become worse when its surface was polluted by slime which produced by the weathering of spodumene and other silicates (Dresler et al. 1998; Moon and Fuerstenau 2003; Menéndez et al. 2004; Yu et al. 2015). In addition, the species of Ca2+, Fe3+, Mg2+ and other metal ions in pulp can not only activate the flotation of spodumene, but also the activation of gangue minerals, and then the flotation selectivity of spodumene from gangue minerals became wores (Wang and Yu 2007; Yu et al. 2014). In order to eliminate the negative effects of slime and metal ions on the flotation of spoddumene, the desliming and long time scrubbing with the addition of NaOH and Na2CO3 were adopted. Usually, NaOH shows the activation for spodumene flotation, and the recovery of spodumene increases with the increase of NaOH dosage. Na2CO3 can eliminate the non selective activation of Ca2+, Fe3+, Mg2+ ions in the pulp, and the concentrate grade of spodumene increases with the increase of Na2CO3 dosage. Anionic collectors such as chelants, hydroxamic acid, oxidized paraffin soap, naphthenic acid and oleic acid were widely used for the flotation of spodumene (Dresler et al. 1998; Moon and Fuerstenau 2003; Menéndez et al. 2004; Yu et al. 2015)."

This article is directed co a commentary on the patent system in its relation to the public interest. As man gained supremacy over his environment, he could devote progressively increasing portions o his time to improving his standards of living. In the history of the human race, we have advanced from the hollowed floating log to the modern steamship of the present age; from the sickle and flail to the reaper and combine; from the trumpet and drum as a means of communication co the telegraph, telephone, and radio; from the horse and ox cart to the automobile, truck, aeroplane, and train; and so on ad infinitum through the list of inventions on which are based the industrial and political economies and standards of living we enjoy today. It has also been a long road from the day of the alchemist and his closely guarded secrets to the era of the patent system and its storehouses of knowledge open to the world. The alchemist and the craft and merchant guilds closely guarded their secrets. In fact, they largely opposed innovations on the grounds that they might injure profits and restrict employment. In these days of unrest, with great clamour out of doors for radical changes in our political and industrial economies, it may not be untimely to examine one of the keystones which support the economic structure we know as the free enterprise system, the system which is predicated upon the right of the individual to own property. Many, through impractical idealism, ignorance, confused thinking, or blind political prejudice, advocate the substitution of ownership by the State ? for the right of ownership by the individual. As civilization has advanced to the high standards of living we enjoy today through the efforts of a comparatively few inventors, the patent system which has provided the incentive that created the inventions on which our industries and our employment are based is fully understood and appreciated by a comparatively small percentage of our people. As a result, the patent system, as a keystone in our free enterprise economy, is an apt target for destructive criticism, with the thought, possibly, that by eliminating or drastically restricting the several rights to individual ownership one by one, ownership by the State will progressively replace ownership by the individual.

This study compared particle size distribution and density distribution of crushed products for waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) before and after heat treatment. The crushing process for heat-treated WPCBs is a selective crushing process; more metal is concentrated in the coarse particle range of 1.0–0.5 mm and high density range of 2.8–2.96 g/cm3. WPCBs were separated using the Falcon separator to recycle useful metals. The Box-Behnken module of Design-Expert was used to obtain optimal separation parameters, namely, rotational frequency of 25 Hz, recoil water pressure of 0.025 Mpa and feed speed of 34 ml/s. On this basis, the separation indexes for WPCBs with and without heat treatment were compared. Experimental results show that the recovery effect is better for heat-treatedWPCBs than for thosewithout heat treatment. Comparedwith the non-heattreatedWPCBs, the product grade of heat-treated WPCBs is 1.95% higher, and its recovery is improved by about 14%. Finally, characteristics ofWPCBs before and after heat treatment were analyzed on the basis of stress experiments and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Results of mechanical characterization indicate that the stress experiment for non-heat-treated WPCBs has a maximumpressure load of 212 N and displacement of 20mm, but heat-treatedWPCBs only need 140 N stress and 14 mm displacement. SEM shows that copper foil and fiberglass cloth are deformed in different directions and sizes after heat treatment to form gaps, which promote liberation of copper foil and fiberglass cloth.

Introduction Many tables of nomenclature for igneous rocks have been introduced from time to time, and each has its strong proponents. As a result, any discussion of igneous? rocks is apt to prove confusing unless the names used for these rocks are defined. This ?became so obvious to a discussion group, formed by the members of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1948, that an attempt was made to establish a scheme of nomenclature that could be used by any member mapping anywhere in Canada. The writer was asked to co-ordinate the ideas presented by individuals in the discussion group, to arrange them in tabular form, and, later, to distribute copies of the resultant table to Canadian universities, provincial geological surveys, and some other geological discussion groups. Many useful suggestions and criticisms were received, were studied ?by members? of the original group, and, so far as practicable, were incorporated in the scheme of nomenclature. The result is the table presented here. This nomenclature of igneous rocks is at present being used by most members of the Geological Survey of Canada who are working with igneous rocks, and by some Canadian universities. We hope it will be found useful and be more widely accepted. With this idea in mind, certain principles were adopted in drawing up the nomenclature.

Urban and industrial construction projects commonly involve interior work within buildings, warehouses and manufacturing facilities. Renovations of these existing structures must address both structural and geotechnical engineering challenges while also balancing the practicality of implementing solutions within site constraints including limited site access, overhead clearance restrictions, vibration tolerances and uninterrupted facility operations. This paper highlights two projects for an international shipping company where mezzanine level additions within active shipping facilities required construction of new foundations. Construction requirements included low vibration levels, as well as rapid and clean installation to limit impacts on the active shipping operations. The selected system also needed to adjust to both variable ground conditions and differing overhead clearances. This paper describes the installation, design and performance of Ductile Iron Piles used to meet the project challenges. The low vibration, driven pile system offered the ability to work within restricted overhead environments while successfully delivering working compression capacities ranging from 45 to 75 tons (41 to 68 tonnes) as well as lateral and tension resistance. The paper also presents the results of site-specific load testing (and pile capacity) for various termination criteria. "El presente texto señala las instrucciones para el trazado de los sondajes diamantinos, así como se describen las siguientes fuentes vanadíferas: Checoeslovaquia, Inglaterra, Francia, Alemania, España, Méjico, Estados Unidos,Argentina Sud Africa y Rhodesia del Norte y Minasragra. En ese sentido, se recomienda que se realicen investigaciones en la parte oxigenada de todos los filones de plomo, zinc y cobre de la Cordillera de los Andes con el fin de identificar una nueva fuente vanadífera. Asimismo, de los tres grupos de filones asfalto-vanadíferos que comprende la región Central del Perú, el que más interés ha tenido por su valor en vanadio es el primer grupo, pese que las asfaltitas que lo constituyen pertenecen a la clase de las llamadas secas. A este grupo de filones, pertenecen Minasragra y Sillapata."

O desempenho balístico de compósitos de matriz de poliéster reforçados com tecido de juta foi avaliado como segunda camada em um sistema de blindagem multicamadas (MAS – Multilayered Armor Systems). Diferentes frações volumétricas de tecido de juta, até 30% vol., foram misturadas com poliéster ortoftálica para se fabricar as placas compósitas. Estes compósitos foram ligados a uma camada cerâmica de alumina dianteira e seguidos por uma placa metálica de liga de alumínio como terceira camada do MAS, os testes balísticos foram conduzidos usando munição comercial de alta velocidade de 7,62 mm. A profundidade de penetração causada pela bala em um bloco de plastilina, que simula o corpo humano, foi usada para avaliar o desempenho balístico do MAS de acordo com o padrão internacional. Os materiais fraturados após testes foram analisados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os resultados indicaram que os compósitos de tecido de juta apresentam um desempenho semelhante ao do tecido de aramida comercialmente utilizado como segunda camada para MAS com mesma espessura, o Kevlar™. O mecanismo que explica este comportamento balístico semelhante, bem como as vantagens econômicas comparativas dos compósitos de tecido de juta foram discutidos.
