A recent advance in slope dewatering-depressurization and stabilization is the use of vacuum assist horizontal drainage. (Brawner and Pakalnis) Horizontal drains have been used for several decades to reduce water pressures in slopes to improve stability. The benefit from vacuum assist arises from an increased hydraulic gradient caused by an induced negative atmospheric pressure. A research program included a laboratory model whereby the effects of vacuum drainage were evaluated. Three case studies are described where the technique has been successful. The first is in a rock slope where flows increased from 0.1 1/min. under gravity drainage up to 1.2 1/min, upon vacuum. The second study involves installation of 17 drains placed at a slightly downward gradient to intercept and de- pressurize aquifers under a major tar sand deposit in Canada. The third study was on a large open pit copper mine in British Columbia where flow increased about 30 per cent.

This system represents the latest thinking in slurry pipeline design and is one of the main contributors to the viability of the SAMARCO project. This paper presents the background, description, and latest information on the system's operation. Special attention is given to the handling limitations of the slurry and to the unique hardware requirements.

"Recovery of water is always a major factor in the Beneficiation process. As Preparation Plants become larger the recovery of water for reuse, is a critical cost consideration. Tema Isenmann Inc in conjunction with our sister Company Multotec Manufacturing, has over the years, developed numerous different Screen Panels, Sieve Bends and Static Screens for dewatering. This paper will focus on a new innovation, the TeePee™ Panel which has double the open area of conventional Screen Panels. This results in efficient dewatering (reduced filter cake moistures) which allows for the use of smaller Vibrating Screens or increased capacity on existing Vibrating Screens. A major factor in the efficiency of any Screen Panel, including TeePee™ Panels, is the performance of the Vibrating Screen. If the Vibrating Screen does not have the required gravitational force or screen area to drain it will not dewater efficiently. Therefore a holistic approach has to be taken where the Vibrating Screen needs to operate at an optimal level, in conjunction with the correct Screen Panels, to achieve efficient dewatering. Key performance areas for Vibrating Screens are therefore detailed in this paper with an emphasis on important dewatering criteria. Case studies of different dewatering applications are included, where the use of TeePee™ Panels, has shown a marked improvement over conventional flat Screen Panels in reduction of filter cake moisture content.INTRODUCTION Dewatering can be done in a number of different ways and is largely dependent on the ore type, the particle size distribution and to what extent one needs to dewater will determine the method used. There are a number of different dewatering methods that can be used for particles above 200 micron, including Screen Bowl Centrifuges, Filter Presses, Static Screens, Static Sieve Bends and Vibrating Screens. This paper will focus primarily on Vibrating Dewatering Screens showing improved drainage and a reduction in the filter cake moisture content. KEY PERFORMANCE CRITERIAL FOR VIBRATING DEWATERING SCREENS For clarification the critical key performance criteria for Vibrating Dewatering Screens are set out in this paper. Dewatering Screens Vibrating Dewatering Screens are normally linear motion, either horizontal or inclined at 5 to 7° upwards with a vertical or back sloped plate at 45° to the rest of the screen deck. The back plate will often have screen panels in them to increase the dewatering capability, as shown in Figure 2 below."

A methodology for the inversion of a scaled charge weight superposition model to predict peak particle velocity (PPV) has been examined. The inversion involves two steps: first simulated annealing is used to get an initial estimate of the model parameters; and second, these parameters are used as input to a quasi-Newton non-linear optimisation method, used to refine the value of the parameters. The methodology recovers the three required parameters (two charge weight scaling parameters and a time window width) and does this directly from a single production blast for a given point of interest. It has been tested on a synthetic example and recovered the input model parameters successfully in the presence of introduced noise with a coefficient of variation ranging up to ten per cent. Another test used the vibration measurements of three tunnel blasts monitored during the construction of the Citybanan tunnel in Stockholm. In this case, the three model parameters are found from one blast and for a given point of interest, and the PPV at the same point of interest is predicted for the second and third blast fired in the same vicinity as the first blast. The three blasts used different firing sequences. The predicted PPV limits use a confidence interval determined from the scatter in the peak levels obtained from the single calibration blast. The methodology was able to predict an upper bound for the PPV in 21 of the 26 tunnel blast vibrations studied. These predictions improve on a previous study involving the same model but which did not use the inversion process above. Given this reasonable success, further testing of the method on other data sets and alternative forward prediction models is recommended.CITATION:Lawlor-O’Neill, M L and Spathis, A T, 2015. For the pillars, which have been standing long after mining, the stability depends much on the weathering action in the presence of mine moisture. From the field observations, it has been found that this weathering action becomes critical in terms of pillar stability if the coal seam contains partings or binders in it. The weathering action degrades both the partings and coal in terms of their load bearing capacity as the mine moisture penetrates into them. This paper investigates the effect of weathering action on coal and partings in the laboratory. In the field, the strength profile in the coal and the partings and the effect of time (in terms of the pillar age) on them have been studied by using borehole penetrometer. In this paper, an attempt has also been made to establish formulae for time dependent strength of coal and partings.

There is a close relationship between the mining industry, economic growth, and technological and social development. Mining activities benefit all economic agents, but only during a timespan determined by available reserves, primarily driven by internal factors such as production rate, technology and costs, and external factors such as prices determined by the market and taxes and royalties controlled by governments (Gordon and Tilton, 2008; Henckens, 2021; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). The intense use of Mineral Commodities (MC) needed to maintain the current lifestyle has placed ore depletion as one of the main threats to sustainable economic, social and technological development. However, ore depletion does not only arise due to the finite nature of MC, price fluctuations or technological challenges. It is also triggered by the ‘economic limits of extraction’, determined by the optimisation of financial factors and technical restrictions within the regulatory framework (Henckens, 2021). Most reporting standards – if not all – define ore reserves as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resources’ determined by the technical and economic viability of extracting, processing and commercialising MC having the NPV as the fundamental decision – making tool (JORC, 2012; Krzemień et al, 2016). However, is the NVP an ‘economically’ basis index able to capture the complexity of economic phenomena? No, it is not, and it is crucial to define what is economic and financial. Although related, they are different disciplines. Economics studies the behaviour of the different market agents, including human behaviour and policies and explains the factors involved in the scarcity (or surplus) of goods and services. Finance focuses on financial systems and managing funds considering the time, cash available, and risk. It involves banks, loans, investments, and savings and can be considered a small subset of economics (Simon, 1959; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). Given the economic nature of ore Reserves, endorsed by governments (Figure 1), NPV is an incomplete tool to determine ore Reserves as it limits the problem to simply maximising cash flows instead of optimising the economic benefits for all economic agents. In addition, using the rigid scheme of controlling taxation – unable to adapt to new market or economic conditions and systematically increasing – within the NPV framework only increases the sub-optimisation of ore reserves, mainly due to the systematic taxation rise. Short-term benefits of higher taxes and royalties are unlikely to offset the impacts of reducing exploration and project development in the long-term, which not only boosts ore depletion concerns but also reduces competitiveness, threatening economic and social welfare (Fisher, Cootner and Baily, 1972; Gordon, Bertram and Graedel, 2007; Lilford, 2017; Mardones, Silva and Martínez, 1985; Radetzki, 2009; Rodrik, 1982; Tan, 1987; World Bank, 2000). Holistic methods and collaborative tools, able to dynamically simulate and assess how changes in the technical settings, regulatory framework (taxes and royalties), and financial factors affect the availability of ore reserves and the impact for all economic agents, should be incorporated into the evaluation process to fill the gap.

Large deposits of titaniferous magnetite occur associated with anorthosite and gabbro in the Lake Sanford area, Essex County, New York. The ore, gabbro, and anortbosite show consanguineous relations. Anorthosite grades through gabbroic anortbosite into gabbro but is locally intruded by gabbro. Structural and petrographic evidence suggests that gabbro was differentiated from anorthosite by filter pressing. Field and laboratory study of ore occurrences indicates that an ore residuum concentrated in the gabbro through magmatic segregation' by normal crystallization and flowage. Ore occurs as bands which grade into gabbro, and also as large masses which replace anorthosite. Ore in the gabbro is finer grained and richer in ilmenite than ore in anorthosite. Introduction The Lake Sanford area lies in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, in the southeast portion of the Santanoni Quadrangle (Fig. I), and there are four ore bodies in the area immediately surrounding Lake Sanford. The area lies 30 miles by highway from the railroad at North Creek. The deposits were discovered in 1826, and from then until 1858 iron was produced in small quantities. They were idle from 1858 to 1906. Between 1906 and 1913, extensive development work was carried on. These early attempts to produce iron ore were thwarted by transportation difficulties and by the titanium content of the ore, which, ironically, has been the element responsible for the present development. In 1941 the National Lead Co., Titanium Division, developed the Sanford Hill ore body and is now producing ilmenite and magnetite concentrates.18 The Defense Plant Corporation is extending the railroad to the property from North Creek and is building a sintering plant to treat the magnetite concentrate. Investigations OF the Deposits* Early studies of the Lake Sanford titaniferous magnetite deposits were made by Emmons in 1842,l2 by Kemp, in 1897-98'0 and by Newland in 1908.22 Singewald26 and Osborne23 considered these deposits along with numerous other titaniferous magnetite deposits in 1913 and 1928, respectively. The entropy values at 298.1° K. for the elements and inorganic compounds, on which sufficient data were available for calculation in 1931, were discussed in a previous publication (96).3 Since that time the specific beats at low' temperatures of many more inorganic substances have been determined, and considerable advances have been made in the realms of spectroscopy applicable to the determination of thermodynamic properties. Moreover, a critical study of the existing vapor-pressure data made by the author (98) furnishes entropy of vaporization results suitable for obtaining approximate values of the entropies of a number of gases from the entropies of the solids or liquids. Consequently, it appears worth while at the present time to supplement the former publication, giving the new values now obtainable and making such revision in the older values as the data warrant. The methods of calculating entropies were discussed in previous publications (96, 98) and will not be repeated here. ENTROPIES AT 298.1° K. FOR INORGANIC SUBSTANCES In the following pages, the same arrangement is followed as in the previous publication (96). All entropy values are expressed in 15° gram-calories per degree Kelvin per gram-formula mass of substance. The figures given for gases do not include the effect of nuclear spin, as is nearly universally customary at present. The estimates of accuracy in the case of the values obtained from heat-capacity data apply only to the existing measurements and to the necessary extrapolations as they are made. It is assumed usually that the substances are in such an energy condition at the lowest temperatures reached in the specific-heat measurements that the usual normal type of extrapolation may be made. No allowance is made for error in this assumption. The recent work on Gd2SO4. 8H2O and FeC13 illustrates the difficulties that may arise in obtaining the entropies of some paramagnetic substances. During World War II, when the curtailment of imports led to an unprecedented demand for domestically produced mica, beryl, and other pegmatitic minerals, the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey entered upon a program designed to expedite the production of these minerals from the Black Hills area of South Dakota. The program involved mapping, sampling and drilling many pegmatite dikes found in the southern portion of the area and beneficiation tests in the field and in the Bureau of Mines laboratories at Rapid. City, S. Dak., Rolla, Mo., Salt Lake City, Utah, and College Park, Md. This paper describes the mode of occurrence and the sampling and beneficiation tests on one dike, the Helen Beryl pegmatite, which was investigated as part of the general pegmatite study in South Dakota. Investigation of the Helen Beryl Pegmatite by the Bureau began in August 1943 and was terminated in April 1944. During this period the Bureau took a series of bulk samples from pits for beneficiation tests, drove an adit through the center of the dike to obtain feed for a bulk-sampling plant operation, and finally drilled a series of long holes to sample the deposit further. Geologists of the Federal Geological Survey mapped the deposit and the faces of all excavations and logged drill holes from sludge samples recovered from long-hole drilling.

"The new Wembley Stadium is the most spectacular soccer stadium in the world, built to the highest specifications, using the latest technology and offering visitors an unrivalled match-day experience. Wembley Stadium is the home of English soccer, dating back to 1918 when the British Government began planning a British Empire Exhibition with a stadium as its centrepiece. The Empire Stadium, as it was originally known, was completed in 1924 in just 300 days and cost £750,000 ($1.4m). It was finally closed in 2000.The new Wembley Stadium, which opened in 2006, features fully covered seats for 90,000 fans and a striking arch that sits above the northern half of the stadium. With a span of 315 m (1040 ft), the 133-m (440-ft) tall arch is the longest single-span roof structure in the world. It supports the entire weight of the northern roof and 60% of the weight of the southern retractable roof. This means there is no need for columns within the stadium and ensures unobstructed views.Multiplex Constructions (UK) Ltd. employed Stent Foundations Limited to construct the £10m ($19m) foundations package for the new stadium. The scope of works for the foundation package included the design and construction of all foundations, including all main works piling, temporary works piles for the arch and roof, and tower crane piles. The scope also included trial piling and pile testing, setting out and removal of spoil.Piles were constructed by using bored cast-in-place techniques with both hydraulic and traditional crane-mounted rigs. Stent also installed sheet-piled walls at three locations to the site’s northern boundary. In addition to the main contract works, Stent constructed a £2m ($3.8m) contiguous bored-pile retaining wall within the demolition and earthworks package (Figure 1). This work was carried out as a subcontractor to Griffith McGee."

"Introduction.The Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment station has been studying the production of sponge iron for the past four years, and during 1923 progress advanced to the point industrial applications can be safely considered. A furnace was operated commercially at silver City, Utah, producing about three tons of sponge iron daily.The Bureau was led to undertake this work by the interest in the use of sponge iron for copper precipitation and for conversion to iron and steel in the electric furnace.If a piece of iron oxide is completely reduced at such a low temperature (850 to 900° C) that no sintering or fusion takes place, then the piece of metallic iron formed has the same size and shape as the original piece of oxide on account of the removal of oxygen, the structure is finely porous, exposing a large surface of iron, and the apparent density is less than that of the original piece of iron oxide. This material is called ""sponge iron"". Chemically, it is a very reactive material."

New technology for on-line particle size analysis of mineral slurries has opened up new applications for particle size measurement. In some cases the particle size distribution of the final concentrate is an important quality issue. This paper discusses established on-line particle size analysis technologies and presents experiences on the use of a new technique employing laser diffraction in several minerals processing operations. The main innovations in the new instrument are a simple dilution system and multiple scattering correction algorithm, which allows wide solids content variations of diluted sample in the measurement cell. Representative sample for laser measurement is produced by a simple and reliable dilution system. The applications discussed are; Blaine number measurement of Fe concentrate before pelletizing, grinding of variable batches of ore and paste thickener control.

"Three primary drivers are setting the trend for base and precious metal processing . they are: continued low real base metal prices, environmental concerns, and continued high prices for PGM.s. Low base metal prices are increasing the search for economies of scale and company consolidation as well as the development of some hydrometallurgical technologies. Environmental concerns are pushing for continued reductions in SO2 emissions and hydrometallurgical technologies. The high prices for PGM.s are driving major expansions and a focus on minerals processing recoveries and, to a lesser extent, reductions in the refining metal lockup.In nickel, HPAL operations on laterites have failed economically but Inco is still pursuing some alternatives. BHP-Billiton and others are developing bioleaching alternatives for nickel laterites and sulphides.Copper continues to be dominated by the hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical debate; new hydrometallurgical developments are being tested at several sites whilst the pyrometallurgists continue to make competitive cost and environmental improvements.Gold processing developments are dominated by the use of improved gravity recovery equipment and by the development of thiosulphate as a more environmentally acceptable lixiviant.PGM processing trends are the use of fine grinding technologies, higher power input flotation cells, and new pyrometallurgical technologies. Hydrometallurgical options for some applications are being sought.OVERVIEW The metals industry has remained under price pressure for some time; low and decreasing real prices for most metals have become an expected scenario. Occasional price spikes give some relief but invariably bring expansions and new entrants into an already oversupplied commodity market, thus leading to the continued price pressure. Technical innovation, economies of scale, and improved work systems are continually sought, so as to improve the competitive position of each individual company in such a climate; however, these developments add to the downward price pressure. In such a situation the application of scarce funds to research and development is a difficult task. Excess funding is not available in tight economic times and yet the main route to higher profits is clearly the application of technical developments to lower the cost of producing a metal commodity. Many technical centers have closed as a cost saving exercise and some have coalesced to obtain economies of scale. The Australian based AMIRA research organisation has grown to serve the R&D part of the market well in Australia and in South Africa by acting as the catalyst to form research partnerships between a number of industry players and as an administrator to direct the funding of research projects towards the various applicable research institutions. AMIRA has developed closer ties to Camiro (Canadian Mining Research Organisation) through the appointment of Camiro.s metallurgical processing research director as AMIRA.s North American based director. AMIRA is continuing discussions with MIRO (Minerals Industry Research Organisation) in regard to a merger, with a report outlining the merger proposal expected in March of 2003. Company focused research centers continue to be effective at Anglo American Research Labs, Teck-Cominco Research, Falconbridge Research center, Inco Research and some others."

The study explored a new combination amine collector (XK-28) that can obtain better flotation index and defoaming rate for magnetic iron ore. A pure quartz mineral test indicates that dodecylamine, XK-I, or XK-II has good collection effect on quartz and their best flotation pH is in the range of 6–7. The experimental results of a combination collector (XK-I:XK-II = 2:8.) show that the separation effect for quartz and magnetite is better than that of a single collector. The single factor for actual mineral test shows that when the combined reagent is used as the collector, the best conditions are pH = 7, 90 g/t dosage, and XK-I:XK-II = 2:8, which is consistant with the pure mineral test. The difference for dodecylamine as a collector is that the optimal dodecylamine dosage is 60 g/t. Under the best conditions of actual ore test, dodecylamine and XK-28 are respectively used as the collector to compare the flotation indexes. Study results indicate the magnetite grade using XK-28 as the collector is higher by 3.02% than that of using dodecylamine, recovery is increased by 1.92% over that of using dodecylamine. Based on the measurement results of zeta potential, uses of XK-28 can slightly increase the zeta potential difference of quartz and magnetite to enhance the flotation effect. The mechanism of action between the XK-28 collector and the actual ore from the Gongchangling plant is physical adsorption, and this adsorption also has hydrogen bond formation. Contact angle results shows that XK-28 improves the hydrophobicity of quartz better than dodecylamine. Compared with dodecylamine, XK-28 is more sparsely arranged on the surface of the foam. The foam produced by the XK-28 collector has better air permeability and it is more likely to merge and disappear with bubbles.

GENERAL GEOLOGY Coal is defined as a combustible rock that had its origin in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man's earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the somewhat unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks being returned to earth will, we hope, provide some answers to questions concerning the earth's origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust of the earth is not completely stable, and throughout the geologic past portions of the crust have moved laterally and vertically. Even today, many coastal areas are slowly rising or sinking. More sudden earth movements are recognized by the earthquakes they cause. Throughout geologic history, rises in sea level or the sinking of the land areas have many times permitted the oceans to cover much of what are now the areas of the continents. A geochemical study of cyanide neutralization processes was conducted at Brohm Mining Corporation to gain a better understanding of the leach pad behavior and to develop a simplified procedure to quantify the attainment of compliance with permitted cyanide neutralization criteria. Such attainment is a prerequisite for off-loading spent ore from the leach pad at the "load/unload" gold heap leach operation. The geochemical study program consisted of size fraction analyses and weak acid dissociable (wad) cyanide analyses for various sections of the spent ore from the actual leach pad. Further testwork included size fraction analyses and wad cyanide analyses on the ore from four 29 foot laboratory test columns which were leached and neutralized with different neutralization treatments in parallel with an actual active leach pad. Wad cyanide was analyzed daily on the neutralizing columns and various parameters were monitored weekly on the influents and effluents during the leach cycle and neutralization period. This Bureau of Mines report contains information on 63 water flood projects in Colorado. Water was injected in 10 formations located in 58 oilfields. Specific field data presented include location, discovery, development, water supply, fluid injection, oil and water production, oil reserves, and oil recoveries by primary and secondary methods. An estimated 3.5 billion barrels of water has been injected to recover approximately 533 million barrels of oil, a ratio of 6.57 to 1. Most of the injection water is from alluvial deposits, although produced water is used in many fields. Injection water treatment is not a major problem. Appraisal of project success or failure in this report is based on technical, rather than economic, information.

This report describes laboratory as well as pilot heap leaching investigations of low-grade sandstone ores from Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado. Sodium carbonate-bicarbonate solutions containing sodium hypochlorite extracted up to 86, 54, and 16 percent U308 from Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado ores, respectively. Ammonium carbonate-bicarbonate solutions containing sodium hypochlorite were less effective at leaching these ores. Acid leach in replicate pilot plant testing resulted in U308 extractions of 96, 88, and 81 percent from the Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado ores. The development of cost-effective processes for extracting uranium from low-grade ore is essential to the assurance of a continuing domestic supply of uranium.
