INTRODUCTION General Switzerland is a densely populated country in the heart of Europe. With its total surface of 41.300 km2 and a population of 6,8 million in 1986 the average population density is 163 capita / km2. The population density is lower than in Germany (245 capita/ km2) or the Netherlands (355 capita/km2). The USA have a population density of 26 capita/ km 2. However, sixty percent of the Swiss surface is covered by the Alps and another ten percent by the Jura mountains the remaining thirty percent of the surface is covered by the Swiss plateau where the majority of the population lives. The population in the inhabitated areas is thus substantially higher and may possibly reach those in major metropolitain areas. Due to the high population density in Europe in general and Switzerland in particular future traffic demands cannot be fulfilled sole by car or plane. Environmental and land-use constraints lead to the third option for growing transportation needs: High-speed rail (Bovy, 1990). Switzerland has developed its own approach to promote public transportation and in particular rail transportation: "Rail 2000" (Stalder, 1990). The system "Rail 2000" is based on a series of hubs distributed over Switzerland where easy connections can be made.

The Bureau has identified several ventilation techniques and a water spray application for reducing auger mining dust levels. The dust control methods all work by improving air quantity or flow patterns at the face. Section airflow is maximized by reducing air leakage between entries. Sealing stoppings with brushed- on mortar, containing fiberglass additives, reduces leakage. Heading airflow is maximized by properly installing the brattice curtain and keeping the area between the curtain and rib free from obstructions. The brattice curtains should be hung at least 1.7 m (5.5 ft) from the ribs in 7.9 m (26 ft) wide entries and kept less than 4.6 m (15 ft) from the face. A tight curtain seal is created by using the mine air pressure to force the curtain against the timbers, roof and floor of the mine. Using both a blowing curtain and an exhausting curtain will isolate some face workers from dusty air. The Bureau designed, auger clearer spray system, can be used to force heading air across the active face. Laboratory tests indicate that the auger clearer spray system can increase face velocities by more than 0.5 m/sec (100 ft/min), while using less than 0.13 l/sec (2.0 gal/min) of water.

"IntroductionMINING operators in common with other operators are confronted today with two serious problems, shortage of experienced workmen and rising costs. The following review of practices at the Sullivan mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, outlines certain measures that have been responsible, during recent years, for minimizing the effect of these two problems. The paper is divided into three main sections:( 1) Training programmes and job studies( 2) Improved mechanization and equipment( 3) Large-scale methods of operationTraining Programmes and Job StudiesJob TrainingJob training courses were introduced at Cominco immediately after the last war and proved to be a great benefit to the operations. There were three courses given, Job Instruction Training, Job Safety Training, and .Job Relations Training. These were spread over a period of two years and were taken by all operating supervisors and some key operators.The courses were introduced by a trained instructor from the British Columbia Department of Labour. This man trained twelve of our employees as instructors by giving them an intensive one-week course. Similarity between the three courses was such that the instructors trained in the first one were very readily trained for instruction in the two succeeding courses."

The mining industry’s attention has shifted over the last decade with the recovery from the downturn resulting in greater development of innovation and new work methods in a bid to remain competitive and deliver higher productivity. The emphasis on cost reduction to improve profit margins has primarily been the focus of the “work smarter” campaigns embraced within the industry. But is this strategy holistically the best-for-business, or does it place a ceiling on revenue opportunities and inhibit mining companies from truly maximising value? Businesses need to maintain a balance between active cost management and revenue generation often resulting in cost reduction strategies at site level. These strategies have merit, assessing areas of cost wastage across operations and creating space for opportunity. However, this potentially can create distractions from the goal of enabling growth and lead to the sacrifice of quality and delivery. Focusing too heavily on cost reductions without addressing revenue generation is an unprofitable lens to look through, and the relationships between cost, revenue, quality and profit margin can often be overlooked resulting in missed opportunity to maximise value. How these relationships are effectively employed by mining companies to reap the rewards from an overarching corporate perspective down to site level remains a fluid concept depending on the nature, operating market and strategy of the business. A common directive from businesses to their operations is to strive for greater profitability and productivity. The quantification of these requirements, and the nature of the cascading message delivered, impacts the methods employed by the operational team to meet the expectations of the business. Cascaded strategies, if not delivered with appropriate participation and buy-in can often be perceived to be knee-jerk and create frustration for operations who are squeezed to deliver on expectations by slashing site costs. This squeezing is not only felt by the mining operation but at the individual level and can result in increased team stresses. In some cases, this may also steer behaviours towards activities that result in corner cutting and an elevation of operational risk, potentially increasing associated incidents and injury. Driving down costs by any means can create an unhealthy tunnel vision where value is no-longer assessed for best-forbusiness results. By flipping the viewpoint to a value-based approach revenue opportunity may be realised and potentially exceeded, however this opportunity may be missed if value is over shadowed by a cost heavy focus. By analysing a selection of real operational cases (ranging from mining contractors through to in-house mining giants), it becomes apparent that practical revenue maximisation strategies are not only key to an increase in value and cash flow but to a stronger understanding of business drivers for sites and operators alike. In the cases evaluated additional revenue opportunities are foregone in favour of cost reduction strategies resulting in negative impacts on the associated operations and wider businesses. Alignment towards value generation is king. If strategies are not implemented focusing towards value and revenue maximisation, the opportunity loss experienced by mining operations could continue be great and the question should be posed; when the next up-turn hits will operations be ready to reap the rewards or still have a glass ceiling above their heads?

Newmont Mining Corporation?s Carlin (?Carlin?) operation processes roaster feed through a double rotator, dry grinding mill following secondary crushing. Metso Process Technology & Innovation (?PTI?) was involved in a review of crushing and dry grinding circuit operations in August 2009. A number of opportunities for increased throughput were identified in the PTI study. Extended plant trials were conducted in July 2010 to provide justification for possible circuit modifications and if needed, additional equipment. The trials confirmed that a finer crusher product would reduce the build-up of material ahead of the coarse grinding chamber in the double-rotator. Also revealed were material transport and airflow restrictions in the dry grinding circuit that resulted in a high circulating load. The secondary crushing plant demonstrated it was capable of reducing the amount of +¾? material in the mill feed thus increasing dry grinding throughput. However, wet and sticky feed affected screening efficiency resulting in low utilisation of the existing crusher capacity. The open circuit configuration also made it difficult to control crushing circuit product size. For the dry grinding circuit, changes in grinding media size, transfer grate design and increased airflow were recommended to reduce circulating load issues and increase circuit capacity. This paper summarises the crushing and grinding circuit review, the extended site trials performed by PTI and the improvements in dry grinding operation that resulted from this study.

This is the sixth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data plus more than 100 new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. An article in the December 1984 Kentucky Coal Journal could have far reaching applications. It explains that a banking firm examined the "reserve risk" as one of six factors for analysis when financing a coal project. The firm concluded that coal reserves in Kentucky are worth an average of $0.29/t ($0.26 per st) in-place. The banking firm based this in-place value on its examination of more than 50 leases. In-place value is especially important when trying to establish a mineral value for a given deposit. Ernie Lehman wrote to this author after last year's column appeared and he quoted the lease rates for lead and zinc on federal land. He states, from first hand information, that the leases are based on a percentage of net smelter return as follows: 4% for the first five years, 4.5% for the next five years, and 5% thereafter. The figures used in last year's column ($ per st) came from dividing reported royalty income by reported production. The information reported last year merely translates the results of the net smelter return (as written in the lease) to royalty income per ton to the US Government for the various years. Statistics from the Minerals Management Service of the Federal Government show that oil and gas account for 40% and 53%, respectively, of the Federal royalty income. Coal accounts for about 4% and all other minerals, the remaining 3%. Oil and gas leases are mostly at 12.5%. Most of the coal leases are at 12.5% for surface mining operations and 8% for underground mining. Many of the other commodities are leased at 5%, which has been true for decades. Relative to Federal leases, this year's table shows some percentages and some costs per ton. This was done to give information about the leases and also to show income produced by various commodities. Note that some commodities have a variation in $/ton even though the royalty percent is the same. These variations result from a combination of factors that influence the value of a mineral commodity. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; *quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give the location - either by state, US geographic area or Canadian province; the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. Siskon Gold has started gold production at the San Juan deposit in northern California. The mine is located about 27 km (17 miles) north of Nevada City, CA (Fig. 1). It is scheduled to be-come the largest underground gold mine in California. It is situated in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the Mother Lode gold belt. The property consists of 8 km2 (2,000 acres) of patented land. It is situated in a topographically high area known as San Juan Ridge, which is 213 m (700 ft) above and between the Middle Yuba and South Yuba rivers. The elevation is between 790 and 914 m (2,600 and 3,000ft) above sea level. Annual precipitation averages 1,346mm (53 in.). Most of that falls between November and April.

No1ihwest Alloys produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferrosilicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial products. Two such products are dicalci­um silicate, termed as Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide, termed simply MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing power, comparable to traditionally used lime. Thus, the materials warrant study for their use in various appli­cations where neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions are required. One such application is the treatment of acid mine waters with the objective of removing heavy metals. The chem­ical stabilities of the produced metal precipitates are critically important, from an environmental point of view, for their safe disposal in tailing ponds. The EPA regulates waste material dis­posal according to the results from TCLP testing. In this ongoing study, three mine waters were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the control for these experiments. The waters were collected from the Bunker Hill mine, Berkeley Pit, and the Blackbird Mine. In addi­tion to testing the chemical stability of produced metal precipi­tates by the TCLP procedure, two other parameters were studied as well. They are: 1. the effect of water pH on stability, and 2. the effect of pH on the stability of resulting precipitates. In the first three months of study, it was found that neutral­ization with Di-Cal results in precipitates that range from equiv­alent to superior in performance as compared to those produced using lime for the waters from all three mines. An additional beneficial characteristic of precipitation with Di-Cal is the fast filtering characteristics of produced precipitates, when compared to the precipitates produced by lime. This property may be of significance when considering the improvement in drainage of tailing ponds and the volume of solids produced. This paper will discuss in detail the stability of metal precipitates with respect to various pe1iinent metals found in mine waters of Berkeley Pit (Cu, Zn, Mn, etc.), Bunker Hill (Zn, Mn, Ni and Co), and Blackbird Mine (Cu, Co).

I feel that if we are to understand the problems that beset this basic mining and manufacturing industry and, more important, if we are to appreciate the solutions to these problems that I plan to put forward in a few moments' time, then we had better look at asbestos from the proper perspective. Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. This has resulted in asbestos finding its way - in fact, being welcomed - into literally hundreds of applications.

The introduction of continuous papermaking in the early 1800's was the beginning of the industry as we know it today. Since that time, the majority of the paper produced has employed an acid process. However, in the mid 1960?s, European producers began a transition to an alkaline papermaking process. Early European mill conversions to alkaline papermaking begun in the 601s, accelerated during the 1970's influenced by the dramatically higher cost for OPEC energy as well as the high cost of fiber and imported filler clay.

Due to the perceived potential to extract the second economic manganese seam at its Black Rock Operations in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, Assmang commissioned an investigation with respect to mining method and sequencing of the two orebodies in 2007. Based on this initial study into multiseam potential, conditions and impacts, the rock engineering aspect was expanded to determine conceptual rules to govern the extraction of both manganese seams using the normal bord-and-pillar layout implemented at this operation. This work included the theoretical analysis using basic pillar design practices and numerical modelling, including the use of Map3D, UDEC and Phase2 codes.In 2013, Assmang launched a large-scale investigation into the potential to increase mine output from all possible manganese sources at the operation. Included in this investigation was the requirement to confirm or modify the conceptual multiseam extraction rules to implementation. As part of this confirmation process, stress measurements, borehole camera audits and additional numerical modelling were performed at a particular site on the operation where a limited extraction of both seams had been undertaken. The results obtained from this process provided confidence in the conceptual extraction rules and allowed the derivation of final extraction rules that will be implemented at the operation as the multiseam mining process becomes more widespread.CITATION:Hanekom, J W L, Roberts, M K C, Magwaza, M G, Lousteau, R and Piper, P, 2014. The zinc deposits are well known in a variety of sedimentary settings as well as in association with igneous centers, but have attracted little attention in theepithermal environment. Nevertheless, zinc accompanied by gold and silver occurs in several styles of both high- and intermediate-sulfidation epithermal mineralization. However, low-sulfidation deposits are everywhere zinc-poor. High-grade epithermal zinc deposits are hosted by carbonate rocks in transition zones between the HS and IS environments, whereas large tonnages of lowgrade epithermal zinc mineralization of either HS or IS type occur in diatreme breccias or impregnate lacustrine sedimentary rocks around volcanic centers."

A consolidated porous medium is mathematically modeled by networks of irregularly shaped, interconnected pore channels. Mechanisms are described that form residual saturations during immiscible displacement both by entire pore channels being bypassed and by fluids being isolated by the movement of an interface within individual pore channels. This latter mechanism is shown to depend strongly on pore channel irregularity. Together, these mechanisms provide an explanation for the drainage-imbibition-hysteresis effect. The calculation of steady-state relative permeabilities, based on a pore-size distribution obtained from a Berea sandstone, is described. These relative permeability curves agree qualitatively with curves that are generally accepted to be typical for highly consolidated materials. In situations where interfacial effects predominate over viscous and gravitational effects, the following conclusions are reached. 1. Relative permeability at a given saturation is everywhere independent of flow rate. 2. Relative permeability is independent of viscosity ratio everywhere except at very low values of wetting-phase relative permeability. 3. Irreducible wetting-phase saturation following steady-state drainage decreases with increasing ratio of nonwetting- to wetting-phase viscosity. 4. lrreducible wetting-phase saturation following unsteady-state drainage is lower than fir steady-state drainage. 5. Irreducible nonwetting-phase saturation 101lowing imbibition is independent of viscosity ratio, whether or not the imbibition is carried out under steady- or unsteady-state conditions. Experiments qualithtiveIy verify the conclusions regarding unsteady-state residual wetting-phase saturation. Implications of these conclusions are discussed. INTRODUCTION Natural and artificial porous materials are generally composed of matrix substance brought together in a more or less random manner. This leads to the creation of a network of interconnected pore spaces of highly irregular shape. Since the geometry of such a network is impossible to describe, we can never obtain a complete description of its flow behavior. We can, however, abstract those properties of the porous medium pertinent to the type of flow under consideration, and thus obtain an adequate description of that flow. Thus, the Kozeny-Carmen equation, by considering a porous medium as a bundle of noninterconnecting capillary tubes, provides an adequate description of single-phase flow. With the addition of a saturation-dependent tortuosity parameter in two-phase flow to account for flow path elongation, the Kozeny-Carmen equation has been used to predict relative permeabilities for the displacement of a wetting liquid by a gas. 1-5 It has long been recognized that relative permeability depends not only on saturation but also on saturation history as we11.6,7 Naar and Henderson8 described a mathematical model in which differences between drainage and imbibition behavior are explained in terms of a bypassing mechanism by which oil is trapped during imbibition. Fatt9 proposed a model for a porous medium that consisted of regular networks of cylindrical tubes of randomly distributed radii. From this he calculated the drainage relative permeability curves. Moore and slobod,10 Rose and Witherspoon,11 and Rose and Cleary12 each considered flow in a pore doublet (a parallel arrangement of a small and large diameter cylindrical capillary tube). They concluded that, because of the different rates of flow in each tube, trapping would occur in one of the tubes; the extent of which would depend upon viscosity ratio and capillary pressure. At first glance, mineral processing on an industrial scale might seem entirely in the realm of macro-engineering, with large machines operating on minerals and rocks to achieve size reduction, classification, chemical treatment, separation and dewatering. These operations must be conducted on a large scale to be of practical interest. But the machines and processes may not be designed and operated to take fullest advantage of micro-engineering factors. At the same time, idealized designs based solely on micro-engineering research may require adjustments to gain the desired results in the larger scale, operational context. Using micro-engineering research in this way allows the design and implementation of more efficient versions of the machines and processes currently used, while aiding the revolutionary developments unlikely to come from macro-engineered, trial-and-error solutions. Thus, from an industrial viewpoint, micro- and macro-engineering are complementary functions.

IN this survey of the progressive development (of education for the mineral industries throughout the United States, the review of .the history of each school has usually been completed wherever it is first mentioned, but the history of the schools in the cities of the eastern seaboard was not carried beyond 1870. It is necessary now to cover what happened during the period of approximately the last quarter of the nineteenth century in several of the schools in the east. Philadelphia Of Philadelphia, it has been related in chapter 4 that the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania began offering a curriculum leading to the B.S. in mining in 1853; that the school did not prosper, and finally closed about 1890. The establishment of a Department of Mining, Arts, and Manufactures at the University of Pennsylvania in 1855-56 was also mentioned, but its history was not carried beyond 1860. In 1859 J. Peter Lesley was appointed professor of mining in the University of Pennsylvania. The son of a cabinetmaker, born in Philadelphia Sept. 17, 1819, he had taken his A.B. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1838 and then secured a position on the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania under H. D. Rogers. When the Survey was discontinued, in 1841, he went to Princeton to study theology, was ordained a Presbyterian minister and followed that career until 1852, when the Pennsylvania, Geological Survey was again started and he rejoined its staff. He published "A Manual of Coal and its Topography" in 1856, and studied at the École des Mines, Paris, in 1856-57. He published an 800-page "Iron Manufactures Guide" the year that he was appointed to the staff at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1863-64 a College of Agriculture, Mines, Arts and the Mechanic Arts was established, but it was not a separate school

Toward the goal of maximizing minerals and metals recovery from domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has conducted in situ corrosion studies at the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resources Area (KGRA) in the Imperial Valley, Calif., to evaluate and characterize materials of construction for geothermal resources recovery plants. General-, pitting, and crevice-corrosion characteristics of 13 commercially available alloys were investigated for periods of 15 and 30 days in seven process environments expected to be found in typical geothermal resources plants. Stainless steel alloy 29.4, Inconel 625, and the Hastelloys G, S, and C-276 were the most resistant to general corrosion, did not pit, and exhibited little susceptibility to crevice corrosion. Stainless steel alloys 430, E-Brite 26-1, and 6X had low general corrosion rates, but pitted and were susceptible to crevice corrosion. Stainless steel alloy 316 L had a low corrosion rate, but corroded intergranularly, pitted, and was susceptible to crevice corrosion and to stress-corrosion cracking. Titanium-1.5 nickel and TiCode-12 had low corrosion rates, did not pit, and were not susceptible to crevice corrosion. Carbon and 4130 steels had high corrosion rates, pitted, and had high susceptibilities to crevice corrosion. The major scale-forming mineral on the corrosion samples in most of the process environments studied was galena mixed with lesser amounts of other minerals.

A laboratory and a pilot-plant-scale investigation has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines to examine possible sources of nitride defects in the production of magnesium-reduced titanium sponge. The production of alpha-stabilized nitride inclusions in hot-rolled titanium plate from air contamination of sponge during its manufacture has been experimentally demonstrated. Magnesium-reduced sponge prepared from air-contaminated magnesium or when contaminated by an air leak during reduction, vacuum distillation, or inert gas sweep, shows very large variations in nitrogen content. Refractory nitrides, delta TiN and epsilon Ti2N have been identified in this sponge. The highest incidence of inclusions resulted from sponge that was reduced by air-contaminated magnesium and from sponge subjected to air contamination during the vacuum distillation cycle and during helium sweep. Air contamination of sponge during the reduction cycle was not nearly as effective in producing inclusions. Tests showed that color and texture may not be reliable criteria for locating defects during sponge inspection. Maintenance of good vacuum-tight integrity, filtration of molten magnesium prior to charging into the reduction retort, and mechanical attrition of sponge to pulverize and disperse nitrides are suggested as practices to lower inclusion incidence in commercial titanium ingots.

This paper describes the research con-ducted on bit wear and respirable dust generation conducted by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and West Virginia University (WVU), a member of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust. The USBM investigated wear, energy and dust characteristics of various conical bit designs when cutting rock. WVU studied the functional relationships between wear, cutting force, energy, and dust of one conical bit type when cutting coal. The objective of the USBM study was to identify qualitative bit selection guidelines for cut-ting rock; WVU's research objective was to determine optimum bit replacement guidelines. These research studies both found that bit geometry (a function of bit design and wear) influences energy consumption and dust generation. Bit selection and replacement recommendations are given.

The use of solid fuel in shaft furnaces to indurate iron ore pellets was originally considered a necessary evil, which the industry worked long and hard to eliminate. Since then changes have taken place in furnace design and operating practices that have led us to our suggestion that solid fuel additions could again be used. In essence, what has happened is that the developments which made it possible to operate without solid fuel have also created new operating conditions favorable to the effective use of solid fuel. Because these new conditions* were brought about in part by the desire to eliminate solid fuel and because the development was a gradual one, the industry failed to reassess its position and for years neglected the possibility of returning to solid fuel.
