In the first cart of that little space of time that we have designated as the nineteenth century, chemistry had reached a wonderful stride. Viewed from the present heights attained by the efforts of innumerable chemists with perfected apparatus, mire reagents, air under pressure, water, gas, and electricity conducted to the desk, and. numberless other helps, it seems marvelous that chemists of that day obtained such results. In 1820, about half of the elements had. been discovered; of these discoveries, Swedes had made 15 or more, about once-third of the elements then known and nearly half of those discovered after 1700.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study of current trends in methods employed by the coal industry to dispose of acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment sludge. Thirty-three AMD treatment plants, operated by 11 Pennsylvania coal companies, were randomly surveyed. These plants provided data for calculating sludge volumes, as well as information on sludge settling, transportation, and disposal. Onsite visits allowed observation of problems associated with the various methods of sludge disposal: (1) disposal into a deep mine, (2) permanent retention in ponds, (3) disposal at an active coal refuse area, and (4) onsite burial. Method 1 is the most frequently used and the most environmentally sound. It is apparent, based on this representative sampling of AMD treatment plants, that the magnitude of sludge production is such that an aggressive and directed effort in reduction of sludge volume is seriously needed. The areas of major concern are (1) the amount of surface land required for sludge storage and disposal, (2) reclamation of these disturbed surface areas, and (3) effective and efficient means of removing, transporting, and disposing of AMD sludge. In this report, an engineering approach to the practical problems associated with the existing disposal methods is presented, together with recommendations for future research.

"Black powder is employed widely in peace and war. Its properties are therefore of considerable interest to many. The Bureau of Mines frequently is asked to furnish information on its use and safe handling in the mining and mineral industries in times of peace and is now engaged in studies of its application to the arts of war.Black powder has been the agent in many accidents - some very disastrous - and its handling and use are deemed very hazardous. The belief is widespread that the hazards are due principally to the ease with which the powder is ignited by a hot spark or flame in contradistinction to high explosives; these usually are ignited only with difficulty, and some burn incompl0tely and to a certain extent are self-extinguishing. Primary precautions, .therefore, should be taken to prevent the access of heat, spark, and flame.In black powder manufacturing operations a frequent source of disaster is the initiation of fires and explosions in the wheel mills in which the sulfur, charcoal, and nitrate are incorporated. Long experience has indicated that the wheel mill probably will fire if the powder is not kept moist enough; manufacturing supervision calls for the maintenance of a minimum moisture content, at least during the milling. Accidents occur elsewhere in the manufacturing line, and in an endeavor to minimize these, particularly those happening in corning mills, one of the writers suggested many years ago that a suitable humidity be maintained in other operations in the hope that it would serve protectively as in the wheel mill. The experience of one company for many years with this practice was favorable. It seemed desirable therefore, to explore the question experimentally."

SEVERAL categories of storage are used depending on capacity. Operational storage, which is small in comparison with the market, facilitates handling surges of a few hours' or a few days' duration. Seasonal storage, usually larger, permits accumulation of product during sea- sons when demand is low, for delivery when demand is high. In producing areas, large storage may permit production at a uniform rate, without waste or distress sale. Near large markets such storage increases the efficiency of transportation, allows a more extensive or higher grade market to be served, and affords protection against interruption in delivery.

Prospectors were digging silver in the Ray mine area in 1873, and by 1880 high-grade copper ore was feeding a 30-ton copper furnace. In 1910, D. C. Jackling and his associates organized the Ray Consolidated Copper Company, known in mining circles as Ray Con, to exploit the Ray orebody. For 50 years, all mining was underground and the Ray mine was known the world over for innovations in mining methods. It was the first to mine important tonnage (8,000 tpd) by block caving methods. The mill at Hayden, 26 miles (41.6 km) from the mine, kept pace with the new mining methods developed at Ray and in the early 1920's flotation replaced gravity concentration by the vanner machines. First mining by open pit methods began in 1950 and in January 1955 all underground mining was discontinued. The new primary crushing plant, installed in early 1967, featured design simplicity with a low capital cost. The 54 in. gyratory crusher was installed within a total height of 6 1 ft (18.65 m) from the truck dump road bed to the floor beneath the feeder-conveyor under the surge pocket. The crusher is fed by 120-ton trucks dumping from one side only into a 200-ton hopper equipped with a horizontal splitter bar to protect the crusher spider. The crushed ore pocket, of 120 -ton live capacity underneath the crusher, discharges to a 0 to 200 fpm (61.2 mpm), variable-speed, 72 in. by 80 ft long (1.83 m by 24.4 m) sloped belt feeder, probably a first in the industry. Wood-picking stations are provided on either side of the belt so that old mine timbers and tramp iron can be removed from the crushed ore and the wood can be dropped into Dempster containers located below the belt. Counter-weighted finger gates control the bed depth on the belt at 14 in. (356 mm) and a low- level radiation unit automatically maintains a minimum of a 3 ft bed (900 mm) of material on the belt directly under the surge pocket. The conveyor is skirted for its full length and is approximately 60 in. (1.52 m) wide inside its metal skirt liners. Ten impact idlers at 12 in. (305 mm) spacing are provided under the loading pocket and remaining idlers are spaced at 18 in. (457 mm). The belt is 1 ¼ in. (31. 8 mm) thick; and, while it has occasionally been damaged by tramp material, belt life averages 11 million tons. When the belt is changed, the coiled new belt is lowered into position onto one of two belt stands mounted over the feeder, the old belt is cut, and one end is attached temporarily to the new belt. Eco-efficiency has been proposed by the World Business Council on Sustainable Development as an environmental performance indicator framework that contributes to sustainability by assisting corporate decision makers improve the environmental performance of their operations and processes, while also extracting additional economic value. Given that the recent engagement of the minerals industry with sustainability has highlighted the need for requisite tools and methodologies, it is therefore of interest to assess whether eco-efficiency indicators can drive sustainability performance improvement during process design within the minerals industry. Previous work indicates that the choice of sustainability performance indicators to be used for decision making needs to be governed by the decision context; ie the performance indicators need to be fit-for-purpose. Here, the strengths and weaknesses of eco-efficiency indicators are analysed using case studies. First, a more rigorous definition of eco-efficiency indicators for the minerals industry is proposed based on indicators currently offered in the literature. Two case studies are then selected to reflect typical decision situations encountered within minerals process design. For each case study, eco-efficiency indicators are computed and are compared to more traditional graphical representations of the economic and environmental performance of process design alternatives considered. The sensitivity of these indicators to various process design parameters is also investigated. Results confirm that the meaningful application of eco-efficiency indicators is strongly dependent on the decision context in which the process data is generated. Results also show that eco-efficiency indicators can be related to technical process design parameters to allow for richer communication of performance information for various decision trade-offs; however, in some cases, graphical approaches that provide more insights into the environmental-financial trade-offs should be preferred. The research thus contributes to guiding the selection of the appropriate tools for more environmentally sustainable design of minerals beneficiation processes.

Published or available data on safety in quarries are few except those pertaining to blasting issued by manufacturers of explosives. During the past 25 years the quarrying industry (including various types of quarries producing many different materials) has had a markedly improved accident experience. The downward trend has not been phenomenal or has it been uniform from year to year, owing to occasional major disasters; but from the information at hand it appears that improvement during the 25-year period has been definite.

"The Norita deposit is an Archean volcanogenic-exhalative Fe-Zn- Cu sulphide accumulation of the distal type, consisting of six overlapping stratiform massive sulphide lenses, interbedded with exhalative cherts and thin pillow basalt flows, which formed down-topographic-slope from a mineralized hydrothermal discharge zone in the Norita rhyolite. The sulphide lenses are of two main types: channel-fill deposits such as the Main Zone and Main Zone West, composed of intricately layered pyrite-sphalerite-chert, which formed by the dynamic down-slope transport and re-deposition of sulphide exhaled from the vent zone; and stratiform lenses such as the Cu-rich A-Zone and A-Zone West, which formed even farther down-slope, in basinal depressions flanking the dome. Although rotated into a vertical position by folding, the sulphide lenses are otherwise essentially undeformed and contain a wide range of preserved primary sedimentary structures.Of prime importance in exploration has been the recognition that the formation of the distal sulphide lenses was controlled by submarine paleotopography, and that it is possible to approximate the sea-floor paleotopography using variations in the thickness and strike extent of the interbedded volcanic rocks. This has proved to be a major and successful exploration tool in the search for further sulphide mineralization in the mine, and offers prospects for use elsewhere in the district."

There has been a long history of ironmaking on the North East coast of England centered around the River Tees. The industry developed here because of the availability of good coking coals to the North in Co. Durham, and the discovery in 1851 of ironstone in the nearby Cleveland Hills, South of the .River. Cleveland ironstone is relatively poor in quality, with an iron content not exceeding h% and high proportion of sulphur and phosphorous. The iron exists in chemical association with alumina and silica, and physical beneficiation processes involve a serious loss in iron unless the upgrading is limited, when the economics of the process become doubtful. Over the years, richer foreign ores have replaced the local ironstone, and the last operating mine was closed in 1964.

WMC Resources Pty Ltd û Copper Uranium Division operates the large underground Olympic Dam Mine at Roxby Downs, South Australia. These operations mine and process the ore to produce refined copper, uranium oxide, gold and silver. In mid-1996, the company committed to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project (OEP) to expand production from 3.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (85 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal) to over 9.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (over 200 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal). Along with the increase in the ore production capacity of the underground mine and the surface ore handling and processing facilities, expansion of the backfill system was required. The target backfill placement rate was 2.0 million cubic metres of backfill per annum which was to be predominantly delivered as cemented aggregate fill (CAF). This paper discusses the engineering activities undertaken to assess and change the method of designing the required strength of fill exposures. In addition, the operational changes that were introduced to achieve the required fill quantities and the mix designs to meet the specified strengths, including the use of alternate binders, are discussed. This work resulted in a large increase in the fill placement rate and a reduction in the overall unit cost of fill.

Detrital minerals of mantle origin have been found in the Green River Basin of Southwestern Wyoming (Figure 1). Pyrope, pyrope-almandine, and chrome-bearing clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene occur on the antmounds of Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis. These antmounds are a common sight throughout the western U.S., and were used by early paleontologists as fossil mammal collection sites. The mound is composed of two types of material; (1) soil excavated during the digging of the nest below the surface (maximum depth 3 meters) and (2) larger grains collected from the surface and placed on the mound, probably to prevent erosion. The selection of grains to armor the mound seems to be based largely on the mean diameter of the grain, with other factors such as weight, sphericity, roundness and composition in decreasing order of importance (Wheeler and Wheeler, 1963). The minerals of this study happen to fall within that mean diameter range. The garnets are found on the mounds as 3-6 mm diameter subrounded to subangular grains. The pyroxenes are also 3-6 mm in diameter and are most commonly subangular laths. The minerals themselves show evidence of abrasion, such as frosted surfaces and rounded edges. Orange peel texture is present on some of the grains, which suggests that kelyphitic rims were once present, but have been removed. Also, no similar minerals were found in sieved soil auger samples to depths of 2 to 6 meters taken near the antmounds. These observations imply a distal rather than proximal source for the minerals. Lamproitic rocks of upper mantle origin are found bordering the "Green River Basin. The best known are the Leucite Hills, a series of ultrapotassic volcanics found on the north flank of the Rock Springs Uplift (Carmichael, 1967). Minor occurrences of mica peridotite and ultrapotassic volcanics are also found on the western end of the Uinta Mountains in Utah (Best, et al, 1968). None of these rocks are known to contain minerals like those on the antmounds. The garnets are comprised of purple chrome pyrope, red chrome pyrope-almandine, and pink to orange low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandine. Oxide statistics for these groups are summarized in Table 1. These three groups are distinct when their Cr203 values are plotted against magnesium number (Figure 2). The chrome pyropes are highest in Cr203 (1.28-2.66%) and have high, restricted Mg number values (0.781-0.826). The chrome pyrope almandines have similarly high Cr203 (1.29-2.62%) but a lower Mg number range. The low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandines have the lowest Cr203 content (0.09-0.73) and the widest Mg number range (0.534-0.836). Using the classification scheme of Dawson and Stephens (1975) the chrome pyropes are most similar to garnets derived from kimberlite and from garnet lherzolite, websterite, and harzburgite xenoliths in kimberlite. The chrome pyrope-almandines and the low chrome pyrope/ pyrope almandines are similar to garnets derived from eclogite nodules (Figure 3).

Historically, underground mine rescue teams have received training only in the course of actual emergencies, or in simulated mine environments, usually on the surface, with placards to identify objects and hazards. Also, while U.S. Federal Regulations require all underground miners to walk escapeways and conduct fire drills every 90 days, this does not fully prepare them for the conditions that may be encountered in real escape situations, such as smoke filled entries. This paper describes technology and realistic training simulations that have been identified for the general workforce and mine emergency responders. Of all the technology evaluated by underground personnel, laser lights and lifelines were most beneficial in leading personnel to safety and out of the mine in smoke-filled passageways. These technological advancements can improve the state of readiness for rescue personnel and increase the chances of survival for personnel escaping from underground emergencies.

"IT is indeed a pleasure to have the opportunity of addressing this group today. Not only does it give me the opportunity of meeting with representatives of what is considered by many to be the most dynamic segment of industry in Canada today, but it also allows me to talk about a subject of para-mount interest to myself, the development of the North, and to explain, if even only briefly, some of our beliefs and hopes in this regard.It is inconceivable that all lands north of the 60th parallel, representing 35 per cent of Canada's total land area, which we believe contain a great natural resource potential, will remain as an undeveloped portion of Canada. The re-sources are there, although the people and private industry are as yet not there in sufficient numbers.It has been estimated that in the west and north of Canada there are 1.6 million cubic miles of sedimentary rocks. Of this figure, 342,-000 are thought to lie in Alberta, 115,000 in British Columbia and about 1 million cubic miles are thought to lie in Canada's northern regions, the bulk in the Arctic Islands. On the basis of apparent volumes of sedimentary rock, we estimate that as much as 13 billion barrels of petroleum may lie beneath the permafrost of the North-west Territories, another 3 billion barrels in the Yukon Territory and 33 billion barrels in the Arctic Islands. This is, indeed, a rich and elusive prize, and one which must be sought with a view to fulfilling demands on the production of petroleum."

Corrosion studies in laboratory ball mills and grinding environment simulations produce corrosion rates and total metal removal rates much lower than those recorded in operating production ball mills. The corrosion component of ball metal loss in commercial mills represents less than 10% of the total loss expressed as micrometers/hour of exposure in recent USBM tests. Such small absolute losses are consistent with ball metal loss measured in production ball mill marked ball wear tests to determine effects of corrosion and abrasion resisting properties of alloys in operating mills which indicate that metal hardness and microstructure determine relative metal loss rates of a given situation. The combination of ore characteristics and grinding process dynamics determine metal loss severity. Alloying for corrosion resistance and modification of the milling corrosion environment yield relatively small metal loss reductions. Alloying and heat treatment to produce high hardness and microstructures of high carbon martensite and for cast irons, M7C3 carbides produces the lowest metal losses in typical wet grinding applications.

The $650 million financing for Into Ltd.'s Soroako nickel project is a story worth telling-not only because the project itself represents a significant achievement but also because there are certain important lessons that can be derived from our experience in financing the project. A critical appraisal of the methods and successes in the financing plan is presented in this article, in light of goals which Inco sought to achieve. A technical assessment of the project is not included, since Inco Ltd. has submitted a series of papers on this subject at the International Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of AIME in February 1979. Introduction An engineer is a builder and a problem solver. He uses knowledge of the properties of matter and energy to furnish the needs of society. Engineers form the bridge between scientific researchers and the general public, most of whom are technologically illiterate. Mining, metallurgical, and petroleum engineers extract minerals from the ground and process them into usable forms. Then, other engineers further process them into society's needs. Minerals engineers deal with more uncertainty than other engineers. Each ore deposit has its own personality and each ore is metallurgically unique. Minerals engineers, therefore, must be flexible, often applying larger safety factors and contingencies than other engineers, and frequently functioning as a jack of all trades. A minerals engineer can work in coal, oil, oil shale, base metals, ferrous metals, precious metals, industrial minerals, strategic minerals, or in exploration. Other mining jobs include banking and financing, education and research, marketing and sales, and government. As a minerals engineer, you may be among the first to work on the ocean floor or the moon. College Preparation A difference between college and industry is the type of problems to be solved. A typical college problem has an exact answer derived from given information. An industry problem is more apt to have a solution chosen from a number of alternatives. Information required for the solution is not given. It must be measured, calculated, looked-up, estimated, or otherwise derived. Solutions involve trade-offs, economics, and human factors, as well as application of physical laws and theory. When a college problem is answered, you move on to the next one. In industry, however, the headaches may just be starting with the implementation of the solution. Students often complain that they see little use for the theory they are learning. This is valid. A good professor will link theory and practice. Another difference between college and industry is the price of failure. In college, you can make a half-hearted effort in an assignment and take your C or D. On the job, however, poor engineering results in potentially effective projects being rejected and unsound projects being undertaken. Poor performance results in cost overruns, schedule holdups, oversights, disgruntled employees, irate bosses, unsafe structures, and unreliable systems. The costs are time, money, and possibly lives. The student pays the university for his work - not the other way around. So the rewards for good schoolwork often seem nebulous. But education must be viewed as an investment. Working for good grades will help you think better, learn more, receive better job offers, and perform more effectively on the job. There is no substitute for hard work. Avoid taking the easiest electives. If you desire a more liberal education or dislike rigorous physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering courses, change majors. Remember, you are training to be an engineer, not a computer programmer or market analyst. At least one summer of industry employment is necessary for minerals engineering students. The sooner you gain actual experience, the sooner you will know whether to change majors. Most large companies hire students during summer. It is best to send out applications around Christmas break. First and second year students usually work as laborers. Upper-classmen may work as engineering technicians. Students must sometimes choose between returning to a company at a higher position or trying a different company at a lower position, for more varied experience. Both alternatives have advantages. Do your best on these summer jobs. The company is watching. If you do well, the chances are good you will get a job offer when you graduate. Good references are important when you begin job hunting. Interviewing occurs near the end of your school career. The standard procedure is to send your resume with a cover letter to each company you are interested in. The resume for a graduating engineer with little experience need not exceed one page. The cover letter must be written for the individual company.

"The Deep Mixing Methods (DMM), in their current forms, have been employed in the United States since 1986, although an earlier version had seen service from 1954. The earlier developments were strongly influenced by practices in the Nordic countries and Japan, while by the late 1980’s several DMM systems had been developed in the U.S. itself. Since then, DMM has continued its evolution, principally via the challenges of a series of large, landmark projects, but also via distinct, significant technological advances. This paper highlights the key points in the history of DMM in the U.S., and provides an overview of the different methods currently in use.IN THE BEGINNINGIt is a common misconception that the history of applications of the Deep Mixing Methods (DMM) in the United States dates from 1986 when SMW Seiko Inc. — a subsidiary of Japan’s Seiko Kogyo Company — was established in the Bay Area. However, the author believes that Intrusion Prepakt Co.’s patented MIP (Mixed in Place) system had been used, albeit sporadically (about 30 projects are recorded), since 1954 (FHWA 2000, 2001). Ironically, by 1961 this single auger method had been extensively used under license in Japan for excavation support and groundwater control — by the Seiko Kogyo Company. By 1972, the original MIP technique had been succeeded by more advanced Japanese methods, involving multiple augers. Intrusion Prepakt have long since become defunct.The first systematic studies of contemporary Deep Mixing Methods in Japan began in 1967 when the Port and Harbor Research Institute of the Ministry of Transportation began laboratory testing using granular and powdered lime for treating soft marine soils. Fundamental studies continued through the early 1970’s, by which time the development of industrial scale equipment was well advanced, having its first application on a marine trial near Haneda Airport. Coincidentally, laboratory and field research also began in 1967 in Sweden (“Swedish Lime Column Method”) for treating soft clays using unslaked lime. Reportedly the progenitor was a Norwegian, Kjeld Paus, who had made observations on fluid lime columns in the U.S. It would seem that developments in Japan and the Nordic countries proceeded independently until 1975 when the technology leaders from each group (Broms and Boman; and Okumura and Terashi, respectively) presented their — very similar — findings at a conference in Bangalore, India. Limited technical exchanges ensued thereafter.Whereas the Nordic developments continued to focus on the use of dry reagents (cement and lime) and relatively light equipment compatible with operating on and in very soft clays and organics, the Japanese progressed into the use of fluid reagents (cement-based grouts) and heavier equipment for both marine and land-based projects. Thus, by 1986, there were a large number of proprietary (wet and dry) DMM systems in Japan, and a rapidly growing market already by then accounting for over 12,000,000 m3 of ground treatment."

Metal mining at great depths presents a number of serious challenges for mine operators. Among them is the high demand for fresh air required to cool down mine openings, evacuate noxious gases and contaminants and provide sufficient amounts of oxygen for miners. At the same time, modern mechanized mines extensively use diesel-powered load-haul-dump (LHD) machines, trucks and other mobile equipment. These vehicles not only emit exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM), but constitute an additional source of heat. As mine regulations get steadily more stringent with regard to air quality, the use of diesel engines has an additional adverse impact on ventilation costs. In this context, the present paper examines possible alternatives for diesel power trains, both those commercially available and those in development. They are reviewed with regard to their principles, required infrastructure, stage of technology development and progress. The questions of their flexibility, practicality and economic viability are also addressed. Finally, their possible benefits and potential for implementation in the conditions of deep metal mines are discussed. The paper concludes with short- to medium-term predictions concerning promising drive alternatives for vehicles destined to operate in deep metal mines.
