The separation process called solvent sublation for the removal of two hydrophobic compounds (penta-and tri-chlorophenols) from the aqueous phase is discussed. A steady state mathematical model for the process is discussed. The process was conducted in a continuous countercurrent mode. The underlying mechanisms, theory and experimental details on the effects of process variables on removal efficiency are reported.

GROWING use of basic slag in the agricultural industry is of special interest and importance to the iron and steel industry of the Birmingham district, providing an increasing outlet for this by- product. Such use of basic slag was first developed in England about fifty years ago where it soon became wide- spread. About twenty years ago the Tennessee Coal, Iron & R. R. Co. began its production in the United States after exhaustive tests had demonstrated its high value here as in Eng- land. It is particularly valuable on heavy clay and acid soils, improving their physical condition, increasing their alkalinity where that is desirable, and providing soluble phosphate and small amounts of manganese to soils deficient in these respects. Its use in agriculture is growing as its advantages are becoming more widely known.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied process mineralogy to investigate a lead and zinc deposit located near Story Creek, Colville Mining District, Alaska. Mineralization is hosted by the Kayak Shale in veins, veinlets, and breccia. Sphalerite and galena, with supergene anglesite, occur in symmetrical quartz veins and between breccia clasts. The study sample analyzed 2.11 percent Pb, 5.37 percent Zn, 0.014 percent Cu, and 1.2 oz/ton Ag. Analyses of crushed products showed that 33 percent of the sample weight, and more than 50 percent of the Pb and 65 percent of the Zn, are in the minus 850 µ m fraction. Liberated grains of sphalerite and galena were found in crushed products finer than 300 µ m. Beneficiation tests indicate the material is amenable to processing by traditional gravity and flotation techniques.

SAG mill throughput is often a bottleneck in increasing metal productivity. Improved size distribution control in the mill feed can be used to increase mill production. This can be accomplished by controlling blast fragmentation as a function of energy input and rock characteristics. Such an approach requires the integration of rock fragmentation and comminution modeling. The optimal mill feed size distribution is determined by adapting a population balance comminution model to a measure of rock hardness or fragility which is also relevant to the rock fragmentation that is achieved by blasting. The relation between the size distribution and fragility of the feed and of the mill's product and the critical size in a SAG mill is examined.

American Electric Power Company (AEP operates 31 coal mines in three states, and some 26 electric generating stations (19 coal-fired) located in the Ohio River Basin. Normally the system burns over 36,071,600 tonnes (40,000,000 tons) of coal and generates in excess of 3.6 X 1018 J (100 billion kwh) of electricity per year. In 1975, AEP, in response to the progressively more stringent air quality requirements of the clean air act, acquired large low-sulfur reserves in Carbon County, Utah (Figure 1. Location Map). Price River Coal Company (PRCC) is the operator OF this multi-seam complex, which is part of the Book Cliffs coalfield at an elevation exceeding 1,829 m (6,000 ft.). The topography is mountainous and divided by numerous canyons. Flat areas are at a premium (Figure 2. Castle Gate Area). Modern high production longwall mining takes in some top and bottom waste, and in this particular operation, it amounts to about 14% of the ROM tonnage.

It is difficult to evaluate exploration properties in a manner that is transparent, repeatable and easily re-calculated to cater for different geological interpretations, but the risk-based assessment methodology, the Geological Risk Method, developed and described by Lord et al (2001) attempts to satisfy all these criteria. This paper examines a case study example based on valuations of exploration projects conducted by SRK Consulting using this methodology, and describes some of the advantages and limitations of the method.

"Molten hauling and water granulation are the commonly used slag treatment methods in the production of nickel. Water is present in these processes either to accelerate cooling of the dumped slag or in the granulation itself which creates an inherent safety risk of explosions. Even good design and operation are not sufficient to prevent explosions or injuries from occurring. Several dry methods to treat slags have been intensely studied. However, most of these technologies have never been commercialized due to numerous challenges including scalability, cost, low heat recovery efficiencies, and difficulties in heat utilization. Ecomaister-Hatch has recently developed and commercialized a reliable and simple Dry Atomization process, which eliminates water and allows for heat recovery. As part of the development towards other sectors, laboratory-scale and pilot-scale trials have been completed in a number of base metals and PGM facilities. Recently, Dry Atomization of a nickel laterite slag was successfully demonstrated at the laboratory-scale. The current paper introduces the technology and reports the test results obtained from atomization of the nickel slag.INTRODUCTION The processing of nickel laterites produces vast amounts of slag with over 90% of the feed to the furnace reporting as slag. Slag handing is therefore of critical importance to a laterite smelter. Traditionally there are two ways in which the slag is handled (1) Molten hauling, dumping, cooling and quarrying (2) Water granulation, dewatering, stockpiling. There are inherent disadvantages of both methods that will be outlined in this paper. An alternate route of Dry Atomization provides distinct advantages over the two conventional routes that are of particular interest to the nickel producer such as elimination of molten hauling, dumping and quarrying, elimination of water and improved safety. There is also the potential to convert the slag, which is typically regarded as a waste product, into a value added product and the continuous nature of slag tapping makes it amenable to heat recovery. Hatch has recently conducted laboratory-scale test work on laterite slag to demonstrate its viability for Dry Atomization. Results of this work are presented."

With a worldwide growing population the demand for higher living standards, food and the development of new technology is rapidly rising. To allow for a continuous growth, larger quantities of minerals and raw materials are needed at a faster pace. Different methods have been developed to access or tap ore more quickly, such as improved drill and blast operations, mechanical mining methods using equipment such as roadheaders (RH), longwall miners and other technical equipment. Another possibility to access and develop mines faster is the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM).The historical usage of TBMs is surprisingly long, but the opportunity for technology adoption by the majority of worldwide mining companies remains largely untapped. Dozens of full face TBMs have been used by mines around the world, including two that will begin operation soon in Australia. TBMs have been used to safely and rapidly gain access to the orebody, or to expand access to the orebody to increase output by running a TBM along the edge of the orebody for several kilometres. These machines have also been used for ventilation and for conveyor tunnels for ore removal. They have been used to quickly excavate long and winding declines giving access to an orebody at several levels in a short period of time.Tunnel boring technology can be used for mine declines, mine access tunnels and all sorts of different mine designs and set-ups. TBM technology simply needs to be adapted to the mine conditions and, if manufacturers are involved early on in the planning process for mine development, the operation can be very successful. In some cases, historically typical mine designs may need to be re-thought.One mine, the Stillwater Platinum mine in Nye, Montana, is currently employing its fourth TBM in 25 years. Two were used to create tunnels running alongside the orebody, rapidly expanding access to the orebody in many locations for increased output. Two were used to create parallel access tunnels to a mine expansion at the East Boulder orebody; one tunnel is for conveyor haulage and the other for vehicular access. TBMs have been employed successfully many times to rapidly drive vehicular decline tunnels to multiple mine levels, such as at the San Manuel – Magma Copper mine in the USA. While TBM technology may not seem to be optimal for every mine, these success stories show that the method can provide vast benefits for the right projects.Early use of TBMs in extremely hard rock metal mines, in the 1960s and 1970s, had limited success since performance was low. However there have been great improvements made over the years in the strength of rock which can be excavated by TBMs with high performance. Other important improvements involve the provision of a safe work environment, safely and rapidly supporting the rock and predicting geology ahead of the TBM.This paper will briefly note the more than 20 TBM mining projects and highlight some notable successes. It will then go on to give a status report on the two active TBM mining projects in Australia and the difference between a TBM operation versus other excavation methods such as drill and blast (D&B) or RH excavation.CITATION:Rauer, M, 2014. Sands are utilized to make molds for metal castings in the foundry industry. Approximately a half ton of sand is disposed of for each ton of metal cast in this country. In Michigan, annual sand disposal amounts to about one million tons. A process has been developed in this study to reclaim sands from a steel foundry. Physical separations are utilized in conjunction with other operations (such as the removal of binder, metal, spruce, washes, etc.) to yield silica and chromite sands with desirable molding properties. Several different separation methods, including electrostatic, magnetic, and various gravitational approaches have been examined. Experimental results are presented. The applicabilities of these separation methods are discussed.

LABOR. conditions have finally caused rock-drilling machines to supplant hand drillers in the Japanese mining industry, and have encouraged this study. During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author's mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. Geomembranes have been used in the mining industry since the early 1970s in solution and evaporation ponds, tailings impoundments, and heap leach pads. Traditionally, heap leach pad lining systems have consisted of a single geomembrane liner placed directly over a prepared subgrade of locally available soil. Heap fills are constructed by placing a layer of highly-permeable drainage stone (overliner) over the geomembrane. Crushed ore is then placed on the leach pad in 3- to 10-m (15- to 30-foot) thick lifts, sometimes reaching final heights of several hundred feet. The crushed ore is irrigated with a chemical solution which dissolves the precious metals from the ore. The nature of the chemical leaching solution depends on the metal being targeted. Low pH sulfuric acid solutions are generally used to leach copper and nickel; high pH cyanide solutions are used to leach gold and silver. The metal-laden pregnant leach solution (PLS) passes down through the ore pile and is captured in a drainage system. Metals are extracted from the leach solution and the solution is then recycled back onto the leach pile. When under load, geomembranes are vulnerable to damage from large stones both in the soil subgrade and in the overlying drainage layer. Although intact geomembranes are virtually impermeable, installed geomembranes will have a small number of holes due to imperfect seams or damage during construction and filling operations. These holes serve as open pathways for leakage into the soil below. Smith and Welkner (1995) estimated liner leakage rates ranging from 5 to 10,000 L/ha/day, depending on the type of heap pad liner and level of construction quality assurance (CQA). Thiel and Smith (2003) reported liner leakage rates up to 2,000 L/ha/day for a valley fill facility with heads ranging from 15 to 35 m.

Pebble recycle crushing circuit performance at Telfer has historically fallen significantly short of the design product P80 of 12 mm. An investigation was undertaken to evaluate the current pebble crusher circuit performance, quantify the optimum performance achievable with the existing circuit and examine the impact of pebble crusher performance on the overall grinding circuit throughput. The primary objective of this investigation was to develop an operating strategy that could consistently deliver the finest possible pebble crusher product to maximise the overall plant throughput.The pebble crusher specific energy (Wc) was proposed as a key control variable for pebble crusher operation based on the results of plant survey work. Over the range of pebble crusher specific energies encountered at Telfer, a strong linear relationship was found to exist between Wc and the crusher product size. This direct linear relationship between specific energy and crusher product size remained constant regardless of how the change in specific energy was generated, ie through changes to the crusher closed side setting (CSS), feed rate, liner profile or moisture content. Key findings for the Telfer pebble crushing circuit were: each 0.1 kWh/t change in Wc resulted in a 4.9 per cent to 6.0 per cent change in plant throughput, each 1 mm change in pebble crusher CSS resulted in a 2.2 per cent to 2.6 per cent change in plant throughput, and 0.57 tonne of new feed was displaced for each tonne of crushed pebbles recycled to the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill. The presence of an existing 3000 tonne pebble stockpile between the SAG mill and pebble crushers provides an opportunity to manipulate the feed rate to the pebble crushers independently of the SAG mill pebble production rate. This flexibility, along with excess pebble crushing capacity, enables the pebble crusher specific energy to be maximised the majority of the time. Pebble crusher specific energy has subsequently been incorporated as an online crusher control measure to assist in maximising plant throughput.

The territory of Czechoslovakia is well endowed in deposits of a variety of industrial minerals. At present, 29 different types of industrial minerals are mined from some 600 individual deposits in Bohemia and Moravia only. About half of those production centres involves structural materials like aggregate and common brick clays and loams. A significant proportion of industrial minerals produced in Czechoslovakia are exported. Destinations of main products are shown in Figure 1. Production of industrial minerals in Czechoslovakia has a long history. Glass has been produced since the 14th century, sulphuric acid since 1578, graphite since 1750, and chinaware since 1790, to name just a few; but most of the present production comes from deposits developed during the past forty years. For a variety of reasons, only about 30 per cent of registered and explored industrial minerals deposits in the country are in production (Table 1). Two of the reasons may be the complexity of processing or conflicting interests of parties involved, but lack of market research, investment funds, or processing capacity have also had an impact on the level of utilization of the resource base.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is currently being produced from a relatively small area in the Dunkard and Pocahontas basins, in the northern and central parts of the Appalachian Basin, respectively. In general, much of the production occurs where the coal beds are beneath 500 feet or more of overburden, where the rank of the coal is high-volatile B or greater (%Ro >0.8), and where the natural fracture system is enhanced by structural deformation. It is anticipated that near-term CBM development will continue within these areas and will expand in the Appalachian basin as technology improves and as the price of gas rises.

Coal fines of less than 0.5 mm particle size, discarded as too fine for gravity separation, were subjected to flotation tests at varying pH and temperatures using modified dosages of kerosene as oil phase and methylisobutylketone (MIBK) as frother. Optimal coal recovery of over 74% was obtained using 200 kg kerosene and 4 kg MIBK per ton of coal fines at a pH of 9.7 and an ambient temperature of 26° C. The coal concentrate obtained under these optimal recovery conditions assayed 9.10% ash, 0.35% sulfur and 0.011% phosphorus, representing reductions in the ash, sulfur and phosphorus contents of approximately 75%, 43% and 8.3%, respectively. Its gross calorific value was 32.9 MJ/kg, its percentage of volatile matter measured 30.6 and the fixed carbon content was 66.3% (d.a.f). Caking tests showed the optimal concentrate has a standard welling number of 1 and is a Gray-King coke type C. These results show that the optimal flotation product could be utilized for such industrial purposes as steam raising or for processing in gasworks, but it would be unsuitable for metallurgical coke production.

"In 2005, Messer Group established a technology competence centre for metallurgy in Gumpoldskirchen (Austria), with the aim to develop oxygen burners which satisfy today's and upcoming standards of legislation as well as customer requirements. With the assistance of the Development Sponsorship Fund (FFF) of Austria, cooperation with the University of Leoben was agreed on. With the long term experience of the Gas-Warme-Institut ""GWI"" in Essen (Germany) and the University of Leoben, different new burners have been developed.The efficiency of industrial combustion processes can be increased in two ways (which can be seen in Figure 1 ), either by preheating the fuel and combustion air or by adding oxygen. Due to the high 79 % Nz ballast in air combustion, only low flame temperatures can be reached. This results in high heat loss in the exhaust gas, caused by the low combustion efficiency. Therefore, it can be concluded that even low enrichment values produce higher flame temperatures and result in higher combustion efficiency."
