This Bureau of Mines report describes the washability characteristics of 13 coalbed samples collected in Colorado. Such data are needed to evaluate the quality of the coals of the West, where most of our low-sulfur-content coal reserves are found. Of the 13 samples included in this report, 11 had a total sulfur content of 1 percent or less. All of the samples contained low percentages of ash or could be readily washed to a desirable ash level with minimal loss of yield. The coals ranged in rank from high-volatile A bituminous to subbituminous B; nine of the samples were high-volatile C bituminous. The coalbeds ranged in thickness from 6 to 26 feet; the average was about 8 feet.

A reaction is evaluated by which heated and pressurized water is used to precipitate metal oxides from loaded Kelex 100 complexes. Pure copper oxide (CuO) and pure nickel (Nio) in powder form, and ranging in average size from 12 to 25 micrometers, were found to precipitate from copper and nickel loaded Kelex 100/kerosene complexes, by water heated and pressurized to between 374 and 400 °c and 2170 psig (148 atm) and 3500 psig (238 atm). The precipitation is suggested to result from hydrolysis of the metal, following exchange for the hydrogen in the phenolic hydroxyl of the Kelex 100 structure, enhanced by the conditions provided by heated and pressurized water. The reaction is believed to have the characteristics of homogeneous nucleation and heterogeneous growth. The effects of temperature, pressure, initial metal concentration and seed addition on the kinetics of the process were studied. In addition, characterization studies were performed on the reaction products. A detailed discussion of the experimental results is presented.

Oil-yield results are presented for 65 oil-shale sections in Piceance Creek Basin, Colorado, sampled during the period 1957 through 1963. Including previously published data, oil-yield results for 203 sampled sections have now been released by the Bureau of Mines to aid in appraising the shale oil potential of the basin. Oil yields of core samples (135 sets) were regarded as reliable bases for appraising the Mahogany-zone interval, but only 5 sets of cores sampled the deeper, lower-zone oil shales. Drill cuttings (68 sets) sampled the lower-zone oil shales, but their oil yields are principally indicative and should be confirmed by analyses of cores. More complete core sampling of the lower-zone oil shales is needed.

Simulation is a general term which commonly appears in the technical literature and which can have different meanings to different people. One interesting definition (9)* applicable in an engineering context is the following: "Simulation is the use of a model to study a problem." In most cases, the model referred to in the above definition is a simulation model constructed in a computer language and implemented on a computer in order to solve the problem under consideration. The application of computer simulation models to the study of problems in materials handling and earthmoving has been successful in the past. Generally speaking, this method has been used where the system to be studied has many variables and where the ability to predict the outcome of the system under different sets of conditions is difficult. The prime reason for using such a model is to evaluate the numerous likely ways of operating any particular system without the necessity of actually conducting full-scale field tests. The simulation model presented here is such an application made to the process of tunneling and, in particular, to the process of tunneling with a boring-type tunneling device. At first glance, the process of tunneling may not appear to be particularly complex and susceptible to study by a computer model. However, a close analysis of the tunneling process will reveal that it is rather complicated as a result of limitations placed upon the system by restricted space in the tunnel, geologic variations along the tunnel

As a part of the program of promoting the conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum, studies are being made by engineers of the Bureau of Mines on secondary oil-recovery projects throughout the United States. In furthering that aim, engineering data concerning the reservoirs, methods of stimulating the production of oil, and other pertinent facts are collected, studied, and subsequently published so that others may profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study made by engineers of the Franklin, Pa., office of the Bureau of Mines of secondary oil-recovery operations in the Boggs field, Spencer district, Roane County, W. Va., whore natural gas is injected into the reservoir to stimulate the production of oil from a so-called stripper field. The Boggs field, like most others in the Appalachian region, is one in which the major part of the natural energy that caused oil to flow through the reservoir to the producing wells during the primary stage of oil production has been dissipated. For all practical purposes, most of the oil produced in the Appalachian region at the present time can be considered to be from stripper fields. Consequently, secondary recovery methods are being used extensively in the oil-producing areas of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky for recovering some of the oil that was not produced by primary production methods.

Management of emission control dust from electric? arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking as an RCRA-EPA listed hazardous waste places economic and environmental pressures on the steelmaking industry. Horsehead Resource Development Company, Inc. (HRD) serves the industry by recovering nonferrous metals from the dust in rotary kiln plants in Palmerton, PA and Chicago, IL, and has demonstrated the commercial viability of its patented coal-fired FLAME REACTOR Process. However, because of location and/or regulation, many steelmakers could be more economically served via on-site processing of its dust. Therefore, in 198-7, through a contract with the Gas Research Institute, HRD embarked on a program to develop a gas-fired reactor and test a prototype unit. The development program has successfully proven the environmental, technical and economic performance of the concept. Consistently high zinc, lead and cadmium recovery to an oxide concentrate as well as production of a nonhazardous, delistable slag have routinely been achieved. The gas-fired FLAME REACTOR field experiment results and the economic performance of on-site or smaller regional plants will be highlighted.

Safety management, both personal and that associated with catastrophic hazard, helps to define the success of mining companies. Personal safety management, often categorised by slips, trips and falls, has been widely addressed, with numerous approaches successfully adopted. Catastrophic hazard can lead to a single accident (eg ground collapse, underground fires etc) causing multiple fatalities. Catastrophic hazard management in mining is an emerging discipline, and as such there are various pitfalls to demonstrate its effectiveness and success; it is much more than simply meeting regulatory requirements. Various standards, guidelines, and leading practices are available for reporting key performance indicators. While measuring and reporting safety related key performance indicators (KPIs) such as Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR), Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR), are important, they often lack detail, and give little insight into the effectiveness of catastrophic hazard management strategies and controls. Catastrophic hazards are low likelihood, high consequence events, and as such demand a different management approach. Companies cannot use the suite of personal safety metrics to help demonstrate management of catastrophic hazards. In-field verifications have revealed that senior management commitment to safety is often clear, well organised, and resourced. However, there are often some inconsistencies between what management promotes and plan, to what the operational teams understand and implement. Communication and clear understanding of expectations were the common themes identified to help empower supervisors to reinforce requirements of catastrophic hazard management. A lack of specific, measurable, and time-sensitive goals and objectives for the short- or medium-term, making it challenging to track progress was another key observation. Development of an integrated, multi-disciplinary auditing process executed by an experienced team of technical subject matter experts, provided an in-depth understanding of the requirements of catastrophic hazard management. Areas such as underground fire prevention, explosive storage, electrical safety, mobile vehicle interactions, ground control, inrush, and shafts and winders management have substantial overlap and intertwined processes, and similar strategies for emergency responses. Auditing of catastrophic hazards and safety management systems compliance is only the first step in safety assurance. Completing operational performance audits in technical areas and benchmarking the site verification of safety management documents and verifications forms a critical part to clearly demonstrate industry leading safety practices. No longer is it the external inspection or regular hazard management plan review requirements that dominate, but rather the culture of continual hazard identification, management, controls verification, underpinned by improvement and follow-up verifications of the corrective actions.

To maintain copper recoveries and maximise production at the Sepon Copper Operation it is crucial to control the amount of copper entering the leaching circuit. This requires close control of blending of the multiple ROM stockpiles to achieve the desired head grade. Grade variability in the ROM stockpiles can lead to significant variation in the processing plant copper feed grade.Head grade sampling from the milling circuit at Sepon is complicated due to milling in leach solution to preserve the water balance. Copper is present in both liquid and solid forms and copper in the added milling solution has to be accounted for. This leads to difficulties in manual head sampling which also introduces delays due to sample preparation and assay turnaround. On-stream analysis is complex because of the solution and solid copper and the need to account for recycled copper solution.This paper describes the complexity of feed grade management at Sepon and the application of on-belt analyser technology to assist in the control of copper metal throughput.

This paper presents the results of large-scale fire experiments on evaluating the performances of carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors at low ventilation velocities. Experiments using three different combustibles — conveyor belt, coal and diesel fuel — were conducted in the experimental mine at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Research Facility. A total of eight sensor stations were located downstream of the fire with each station containing sensors for CO, smoke, carbon dioxide (CO2 ), oxygen (O2 ), humidity, barometric pressure and temperature, as well as two airflow sensors. The airflow velocity ranged from 0.22 to 0.26 m/s (44 to 51 fpm) in the tests. The response times were recorded for the CO and smoke sensors at each sensor station when smoke and gaseous products of combustion from each burning combustible reached the station. The response times of the CO sensors were used to determine the appropriate sensor spacing in the belt entry with a low air velocity. The performance of the smoke sensor was found to be affected by the high humidity in the experiments. The results on proper selection of sensors and the determination of sensor spacing at a low ventilation velocity can be helpful for ensuring sufficient early fire warning for underground workers, thereby improving the health and safety of miners.

He has not the ability to live out in the open alone for months at a time and carry on with enthusiasm and determination like the old-time prospector. But the same engineer, placed in an organized group where modern prospecting methods are employed, is immediately put on his mettle and his chances of winning are greatly increased. Marsman Investments, Ltd., with headquarters in Manila, has at the present time, Sept. 4, 1937, six prospecting parties in the Netherland East Indies. Three of these groups are combing their assignments for lode mines, studying structures, developing and reaching out into veins and zones with diamond drills. Coal wasted with mine refuse represents losses in overall recovery of merchantable coal to the mine operator and a concomitant reduction in domestic reserves of available coal. Fraser, Kelley, and Graham3/ in studying the available coal in mine refuse in the Pittsburgh district of western Pennsylvania have estimated that at least 1 ton of mine refuse is produced for each 10 tons of merchantable coal and that 20 percent of this mine refuse might be recovered as salable coal by mechanical cleaning. SUMMARY This investigation dealt with the mechanical recovery of coal from wine refuse by a dense-medium washery employing pulverized mine rock as the dense medium and operating at a rate of 175 tons per hour. Two types of mint refuse were tested: Freshly mined and that .which had been mined 2 years before and piled on a waste dump.

Mine and facility closure planning is a dynamic and rapidly evolving landscape. In this landscape, mining companies and industry consultants are generally good at estimating the associated earthworks and rehabilitation costs, because it is æcore businessÆ. Through our extensive work in mine closure, we have found that the safe and cost-effective demolition of mining related infrastructure is often grossly underestimated. Or alternately, it is simply assumed that the returns on scrap steel and the sale of re-usable plant will cover the related costs. With fluctuating steel prices and no guaranteed buyer for the assets, the estimated monetary return is often unreliable and in many cases unrealistic. On this basis this logic is fundamentally flawed. We have found that on most occasions this has meant that closure cost estimates fall well short of what the actual costs are to close the mine.GSSE and Liberty Industrial have worked on over 60 mine closure projects in Australia and overseas of varying scales and across a range of commodity types. An evaluation of these projects has shown that costs associated with the safe demolition and removal of a mining related infrastructure is in the order of 20 - 30 per cent of the total cost at closure. We believe it is one of the top three risk areas associated with mine closure planning and cost estimation, alongside bulk earthworks and the capping of tailings and waste rock storage facilities.Our paper uses examples from recent projects to demonstrate all aspects outlined above. We have also endeavoured to address the following key points related to the demolition and removal of mining related infrastructure:If companies fail to plan appropriately, complicating factors such as contamination, hazardous materials, mobilisation/demobilisation, geographical location, decommissioning standards, site constraints and weather, can add considerable costs to the project and result in variations for the demolition contractor.Closure planning often assumes infrastructure that is no longer required can be utilised by a third party and/or the new land holder. The erroneous, but until recently widely prevalent, belief that iron castings were first made in Europe in the fourteenth century has been adequately refuted in a number of earlier papers;1, ll, l² but except for an unpublished metallographic study by the late William Campbell, and a phosphorus analysis by T. A. Wright of the metal of the Han dynasty cast-iron stove described by Laufer,2 nothing was known of either the chemical composition or the metallographic structure of the metal of any ancient iron casting, although data on castings of recent manufacture are abundantly available. The metal of the stove, which had been buried in a grave for at least 15 centuries, was so corroded that it seemed inadvisable to publish the results on it until morc and better specimens from other ancient castings could be obtained. During a journey through China, extending from Peking in the north to Canton in the south and Cheng-tu, Ssu-chuan, in the west, in the late summer and autumn of 1936, one of us (T. T. Read) was fortunate enough to obtain, and bring home for study, nine castings, all more than 1000 years old, of which the date of manufacture is precisely known because of inscriptions cast in them, another that lacks a dated inscription, but of which the date, as explained below, can be otherwise established, and a specimen from the largest iron casting ever made," which is also dated. The period covered by this suite of specimens extends from 502 to 1093 A.D. In addition, a sample was obtained from a casting of date unknown, but which was certainly cast before 1000 A.D. and possibly as early as the third century A.D. A detailed description of these specimens is as follows: I. 502 A.D. A pair [right and left) of recumbent lions (Fig. 1). Base 7¼ by 113/8 in., height over-all 5½in, weight 26 Ib. each. The tranblation of the inscription on the base is: "Made on the twenty-fourth day of the seventh month of the third pear of Ching Ming of Great Wei" (Sept. 11, 502 A.D.).

"The new Mercedes-Benz Stadium (MBS), home of the Atlanta Falcons, is part of a new era of stadium construction in the U.S. These new-age stadiums are larger and have more amenities than their predecessors. Many of the MBS’s features, including its innovative retractable roof, result in extraordinary structural loads. The roof structure is supported by a series of mega columns that bear on eight large caps, six of which are supported by drilled piers. Each of the pier caps contains between 8 and 16 drilled piers that bear in the underlying bedrock. The design pier diameters are 6 and 6.5 ft (1.8 m and 1.9 m). Augercast piles were used to support two of the mega column caps. Drilled piers, augercast piles, aggregate piers and spread footings were used to support the more lightly loaded portions of the structure.The focus of this article is the construction aspects of the drilled pier foundations. Initially, a fairly extensive drilled pier load test program was performed. Load testing included a Statnamic compression test, two Osterberg Cell tests and two lateral tests. Production pier installation included over 3,800 linear ft (1,158.2 m) of earth excavation and over 1,350 linear ft (411.4 m) of hard rock excavation. The piers contain more than 6,600 cu yd (4,587.3 cu m) of concrete and 1,100 tons (998 tonnes) of reinforcing steel. Drilled pier installation took about 4.5 months. ABE Enterprises was the specialty foundation subcontractor and Bauer-Pileco was the equipment provider.Site and Subsurface ConditionsThe project site is in downtown Atlanta and was originally occupied by residential buildings. A portion of the site was later developed as a rail yard, and other areas contained light manufacturing, warehouses and other relatively light structures. For the past 15 to 20 years the site had been used for surface parking.Beneath a surficial layer of manmade fill, soil test borings at the site generally encountered residual soil, partially weathered rock and the parent bedrock. The bedrock at the site is highly variable, both in elevation and in hardness/quality. The depth to rock is reasonably uniform within the western two-thirds of the site at about 20 to 50 ft (6 to 15.2 m), with a few exceptions. In the eastern third of the site, the rock drops off dramatically to the north and east. In one mega column cap, there was almost 80 ft (24.3 m) in elevation difference. In two borings in the cap that were 20 ft (6.1 m) apart, the top of rock varied in elevation by 34 ft (10.3 m)"

"The use of liquid copper as a medium for zinc extraction has been used in the Warner Process as a method of processing zinc-lead sulphide ore. The recovery of zinc metal is based on the reaction:ZnS(s) + 2Cu(l) = Zn(g) + Cu2S(l)In this method, thermodynamic and phase equilibria investigations of the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS systems are of importance and form the basis for the liquid sulphide phase which appears as a product and is used as a solvent in the Warner Process. Phase relations in the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS ternary systems were determined experimentally at 1473°K to provide a fundamental basis for the new zinc smelting process. The results show that the solid solubility of ZnS in the two systems is very small (2 wt% to 3 wt% ZnS in FeS, 4 wt% ZnS in Cu2S for the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS system; less than 0.5 wt% ZnS in both PbS and Cu2S for the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS system). The Raoultian Activity Coefficient of ZnS in the liquid mixtures and the vapour pressure of zinc over the matte in both systems is relatively large (?° = 7.7 – 15.8, Pzn(atm) = 0.088 – 1.026 for the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS system; ?° = 8.9 – 12.9, PZn(atm) = 0.075 – 0.214 for the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS system). On the FeS-ZnS join, the only phases detected are FeS and iron-rich sphalerite (Zn, Fe)S. The binary join mixture occurs at about 92 wt% FeS-8 wt% ZnS at 1473°K. Electron microprobe examination of the quenched samples indicate about 47 wt% to 48 wt% FeS in sphalerite and about 2 wt% to 3 wt% ZnS in the iron sulphide phase. On the Cu2S-ZnS join, microprobe analysis reveals that the maximum solubility is 4 wt% Zn in liquid Cu2S and 3.6 wt% Cu in solid ZnS. In the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS ternary system, microprobe analysis of the quenched samples indicate on average, 5 wt% ZnS in the liquid phase region. The only phases detected on the PbS- ZnS join are ZnS and PbS. The eutectic phase contains, on average, 13 wt% ZnS. The phase relationships, very low solid solubilities of zinc sulphide in the liquid mixtures of both Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS systems, coupled with the high Raoultian Activity Coefficient of ZnS as well as the high vapour pressure of zinc over matte all favour the partitioning of zinc metal into the vapour phase. This new process is cost effective and bypassesthe expensive and tedious conventionaltechnique of zinc production involving oxidationof the sulphide ore by roasting followed bya reduction process to extract the zinc. Theresults indicate that a new zinc smelting technologyusing the Warner Process would bemore efficient and preferable over the traditionalmethods of zinc extraction."

A review of production in the Eastern District for 1930 is necessarily brief. Drilling operations were curtailed, due to economic conditions, which in turn reduced production. However, in spite of these conditions, there have been a few outstanding developments which surpass any of recent years. The development of a field in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, New York, has been rapid and probably reached its peak of production in 1930. The gas in this field comes from the White Medina Sand (Silurian), at an average depth of 2600 ft. Some of the wells had an open flow of 20,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day,' with an original rock pressure of 965 pounds2 per square inch. Another area developed during 1930 was the Tyrone field, in Tyrone Township, Schuyler County, New York. This field was discovered 2nd is practically controlled by the Belmont Quadrangle Drilling Corpn. of New York. The production is from the Oriskany Sand (Devonian), which is found at an average depth of 2100 ft. The field covers approximately 2000 acres, and to date has 14 producing gas wells. The largest well had an open flow of 15,000,000 cu. ft. and an original rock pressure of 740 Ib. The gas from this field is impregnated with sulfur, and requires washing before it is marketed. Because little is known of the Oriskany Sand, a brief description may be of interest. This sand outcrops at Oriskany Falls, New York, and has a thickness of 10 to 12 ft. Its texture is coarse grained, it is composed mostly of quartz and is a regularly bedded sandstone. At Yauger's Wood, in Cayuga County, New York, it is exposed and shows a thickness of 26 feet. The discovery of the Tyrone field led to much prospecting in the New York and the northern part of Pennsylvania, and as a result of this search, the Allegany Gas Co. struck a large gas well in Farmington Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, which created considerable excitement through the Eastern District.
