Since undergoing a major mill expansion in 1979, Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Limited has successfully operated a somewhat unconventional rod mill/rod mill grinding circuit at its mill in Tungsten, N.W.T., Canada. The concentrator employs two rod mills in series, of unmatched size and horsepower, for production of feed to a gravity (tabling) circuit. Cyclones and screens are closed circuited with the secondary rod mill. Outlined in this paper are the rationale behind, and consequences of operation of this unusual grinding and classification configuration.

This paper describes the technical development of the Newman beneficiation plant over its 23 years of operation and how this development relates to the mine ore reserves of high-grade and low-grade ore. It also discusses the importance of the beneficiation product grades in the overall blending of shippable products from a range of mines to optimise overall ore resource utilisation. Also discussed is the importance of the ore reserve reconciliations in resource utilisation. Data is provided on the capacity and quality improvement results of the plant upgrade, carried out in 1999. This shows how the original capacity upgrade targets have been exceeded and the additional quality benefits that have been obtained from this capacity.

Abstract -A well-defined approach is essential to ensure the long-term success of a regional exploration program. Teck's approach in eastern Canada is designed to fulfill corporate objectives while recognizing certain unique parameters for exploration in the area. The elements of this approach include clearly defined objectives, technical considerations and personnel policies, all of which are equally important. The goal is a significant discovery before the mid-1990s and the company is confident that this target will be achieved.

"Cast in place concrete shaft linings have been used in many salt and potash shafts sunk in North America over the last 100 years. A large number of these shafts have exceeded their initial design lives and as producers look to extend the life of their operational assets, maintenance costs and shaft downtime will, in many cases, continue to rise unless repair work is undertaken. Successfully implementing concrete liner repair schemes in operating salt and potash shafts is complicated due to their age, environment and time constraints during inspection, detailed design and construction. This paper outlines a general approach to the repair of concrete-lined portions of these shafts, based on lessons learned from the authors’ involvement in a recent repair project. INTRODUCTION Prior to the recent boom in potash mine construction many of North America’s potash mine shafts were entering their sixth continuous decade of production (Table 1). Of North America’s salt mines, one has been in continuous production, for nearly nine decades.As would be expected, considering the environment in which these liners operate and the age of the material, the concrete-lined sections of the shafts outlined in Table 1 have been noted by the authors to have lost both cross-sectional thickness and strength over time. Since construction, three principal factors have contributed to this loss in section/strength; (1) physical degradation (impact, freeze/thaw or rebar expansion), (2) chemical degradation from brine/water inflows (Neville 1969; Bothwell, 1972) and (3) overstressing of the liner. These factors may act in combination, in which case they can produce more significant distress than individually. Physical degradation There are three main causes of physical degradation of concrete shaft liners. The first is impact from falling debris/tools or equipment (whether large or small), which may damage specific sections of concrete lining as they fall through the shaft. Impacts tend to damage infrastructure fixed to the shaft liner more than the liner itself, so damage from this mode of failure is usually localised, for example, where bolts fixing a shaft services bracket to the wall have been pulled away, pulling out the concrete around the bolts with them."

Mining schools around the world, many unfortunately now closed, were often established to teach the techniques of narrow vein mining and associated processing to students studying part-time while working in the industry. This arrangement ensured graduates (or æassociatesÆ) had a mix of skills and knowledge invaluable to the industry.It is argued that there is still a need to educate students in these narrow vein techniques and that there will be a growing demand for such graduates with a high level appreciation of this type of mining. There is also a need for innovation in narrow vein mining and processing to develop specific technologies and allow the use of techniques applied in æbulk miningÆ to achieve improvements in productivity, safety and economic performance.This paper aims to review the situation with regard to education and innovation in narrow vein mining.CITATION:Hall, S, 2012. Rock salt has been mined by the solution method for many years in many countries. Attempts have been made in the past in Canada and various other countries to produce potash by the' same method. However, only Kalium Chemicals Limited (1) has been successful, possibly because the conditions in Saskatchewan are the most favorable conditions to be found so far for the development of a solution mining method for potash. There are significant differences in solution mining of rock salt and solution mining of potash. First, rock salt deposits are relatively pure in respect to soluble minerals, whereas potash is never found in the pure state and contains Substantial amounts of other soluble minerals, particularly rock salt. In comparison to rock salt, much less potash is dissolved and brought to the surface for the same amount of water circulated through the orebody. The amount of water to be evaporated per unit weight of product is a major difference. Much greater amounts of water must be evaporated when producing potash and the treatment of the brine is more complicated because other dissolved salts have to be separated. Secondly, the rock salt deposits, particularly the domes, are much thicker. Bed thickness is of prime importance because it determines the yield of a well and consequently the economics of the process. Furthermore, as rock salt provides a strong roof structure, larger cavities can be developed and this prolongs the life of the rock salt well.

I feel a certain sense of responsibility in bringing before you the subject of the direct process in iron manufacture. I am aware that, in such a body as I have now the honor of addressing, there are few who are not already so well informed upon its past history that it would be a weariness to them to listen to anything else than an account of practical success. Yet, to claim that success involves so much that, if I do not make good my claim, I deservedly expose myself to severe criticism. The whole literature of the art, so far as it relates to the direct process, is, up to this time, but a history of failure. It is safe to say that more money, time, and talent have been fruitlessly spent in the pursuit of this object than in all the other unsuccessful efforts in the whole line of iron metallurgy. A distinguished authority in patent law has remarked that " the invention records of the United States and of foreign countries are filled with the waifs and abandoned relics of these abortive struggles." Dr. Percy, whose great work may be taken as an epitome of all that was worth mention, whether useful or curious, in pig-iron metallurgy, up to the date of its publication (1864), after giving elaborate accounts of various attempts at the direct process, condenses his own opinion of all that had been then effected, into a brief but summary comment upon a pamphlet of one of the sanguine inventors who had said: "It is evident that the present mode of working iron

CREATION of a "committee on promotion of student interest in coal mining" has an encouraging implication for the coal industry. It is indicative that mining men, both in the field and in the educational centers, realize that the problems of the industry require the best talent available. Young men are being invited into coal on the premise that it needs them, that it offers opportunity for creative work and the realization of their objectives. In initiating a movement which purports to meet the objectives of any young man who spends four or five years of his life in college, the industry does so with a full realization of its obligations.

"The Gosowong Gold Project is owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM), an Indonesian company 75 per cent owned by Newcrest. It is located on Halmahera Island, in the North Maluku Province of the Republic of Indonesia, approximately 2450 km north-east of the national capital, Jakarta (Newcrest, 2017).Kencana is one of two underground gold and silver mines at the Gosowong Operation where ground conditions vary from competent to very poor. Development headings occurring in poor rock mass conditions require high capacity ground support including long tendon cable bolts. Manual installation of cable bolts in these development headings has been a time consuming process due to borehole collapse, blockages requiring subsequent re-drilling and a minimum eight hour grout curing time interval. The installation of cable bolts including the setting, plating and tensioning can impact the critical path for development heading advance resulting in development cycle delays.A review was conducted by PT NHM on current industry practices for alternatives to manual cable bolting. PT NHM subsequently approached Minova to assist with the development and trialling of self drilling anchors (SDAs) installed using jumbos with a rapid setting pumpable resin, CARBOTHIXTM. A series of system development trials were conducted and a reliable bolting system was developed utilising the existing jumbo drilling fleet with minimal required modifications.The system developed was a ‘one pass’ bolting process to install and grout SDAs using a two component resin with a remote, mechanised system. Improvements achieved from the system include: eliminating hole closure issues and more immediate support in poor rock mass effectively reducing personnel exposure to poor ground conditions by removing the requirement to access the drive backs reducing grout set time with full installation times for 6 m SDAs averaging 25 min.The resin grouting system has now been successfully implemented to effectively manage areas of poor ground conditions and to accelerate advance rates in high priority headings.CITATION:Pateman, D and Sprague, T, 2017. In a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Department of Energy, laboratory column-flotation tests were conducted to evaluate fluorosurfactants as selective fine coal flotation collectors. A Middle Kittaning seam coal responded to flotation with both anionic and nonionic fluorosurfactants. These fluorosurfactants were no more selective than MIBC alone. However, for increasing coal yields, nonionic fluorosurfactant systems did not increase total sulfur and ash contents as sharply as MIBC systems. Flotation selectivity also improved slightly when a combined anionic fluorosurfactant-MIBC system was used in acidic pulps (pH < 3.6). While the fluorosurfactants examined will not likely have direct application in current coal flotation practice, other fluorosurfactant systems could eventually prove beneficial for floating fine coals.

Cobalt-sulfide mineralization can he found in potentially economic quantities where permeable, basal Cambrian formations "pinchout" against Precambrian pal eotopographi c highs. These environments are common around the Saint Francois Mountains of southeastern Missouri and they share many similarities with the geologic environments of Zambia and Zaire in South Africa. Exploration for this type of deposit involves test drilling targets identified by trend analysis from past drilling, geophysics, geochemistry and a comprehensisve study of regional geology and isopach maps. Innovative ideas, new exploration concepts and insoluble residue geochemical methods may provide the necessary "edge" needed to complement basic geologic understanding leading to ore discovery.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines studied the suitability of using flexible tendon cable supports as secondary roof supports at a western coal mine. The supports were installed in longwall tailgate entries and grouted into the mine roof. This paper quantifies how the use of cable supports can improve ventilation in underground airways. A mine ventilation simulator was used to model the changes in airway resistance and airflow and show potential for further ventilation improvements when cable supports are used. Model results indicated that cable support use translated to savings in air pressure around the longwall panel and increased airflow at the longwall face.

"SAMPLING: THE IMPACT ON COSTS AND DECISION MAKING1. INTRODUCTIONFor years those in the minerals industry have been taking samples to assist them in making decisions; whether they be about investing billions of rand in a new mining operation, or simply whether a truck load of mineralised material should go to the mill or the waste dump, - we need a sample to help us make our decisions. This paper emphasises the importance and significance of sampling as a process, some of the associated technical problems and some of the advantages, especially in the light of traditional approaches that has usually left mine sampling to the least educated and lowest paid individuals on the mine. Perhaps the most important aspect that requires attention is the variability, usually measured in terms of precision, that tends to infect the sampling procedures. Francis Pitard 12 has stated: ""There is no such thing as reliable feasibility studies, unbiased ore grade control, accurate environmental assessments or effective process control, if you cannot identify and minimize the seven (ten) major sources of sampling variability. "" It is these ten sources of sampling variability and the way they arise that are briefly investigated. Variability is measured in terms of variances and rather than being self-compensating, there is good evidence to indicate that they are in fact additive at every step in the sampling and analytical process."

Most 3D geological modelling tools were designed for the needs of the oil industry or detailed mine planning and are not suited to the variety of situations encountered in other application domains. Moreover, the usual modelling tools are not able to quantify the uncertainty of the geometric models generated. The potential field method was designed to build 3D geological models from data available in geology and mineral exploration, namely the geological map and a digital terrain model (DTM), structural data, borehole data and interpretations of the geologist. This method considers a geological interface as a particular isosurface of a scalar field defined in the 3D space, called a potential field. The interpolation of that field, based on cokriging, provides surfaces that honour all the data. The 3D model and its parts are always consistent with the observations. New developments allow the covariance of the potential field to be identified from the structural data. This makes it possible to associate sensible cokriging standard deviations to the potential field estimates and to express the uncertainty of the geometric model. It also, for the first time, gives a statistically optimal, geologically sound way of interpolating geology, other than directly joining the dots as you do with CAD. Practical implementation issues for producing 3D geological models are presented: how to handle faults, how to honour borehole ends, how to take relationships between several interfaces into account, how to model thin beds over many kilometres, how to optimise lithological properties and how to integrate gravimetric and magnetic data. We describe all geology surfaces and volumes using implicit functions. These are then rendered onto the required sections, plans, etc. The estimation of orebody grades and tonnes, using an unbiased and optimal geostatistical technique, makes use of the stratigraphically bound 3D geology model. An application to the geological modelling of the Hamersley iron ore district, Australia, is briefly presented.

In the original roast-leach-electrowin (RLE) circuit at the Chambishi Cobalt Plant, commissioned in 1978, the separation of nickel and zinc from cobalt in aqueous streams was achieved by successive stages of precipitation using lime. However, this technique was not able to meet the increasingly stringent metal quality requirements of customers whilst maintaining acceptable process recoveries. Intensive process development work was carried out and, in July 1988, an ion exchange circuit for nickel removal was commissioned using DOW XFS 4195 resin and for the first time Z.C.C.M. produced high purity cobalt metal containing less than 0.10% nickel. Following further work, a solvent extraction circuit for zinc removal, using DZEHPA, was commissioned in February 1991 in order to enhance cobalt recovery by reducing co-precipitated cobalt losses. This paper outlines the process development, design, commissioning and subsequent operation of these nickel ion exchange and zinc solvent extraction circuits.

A process has been developed for recovering the refractory metal values contained in mixed secondary source materials such as contaminated grinding wastes, oxides and sludges. The wastes are calcined with sodium carbonate in air to convert the refractory metals to water soluble Na2CrO4, Na3V04, Na2Mo04 and Na2W04. The base metals, Fe, Ni, Co and Cu, are converted to water insoluble oxides. An aqueous leach of the calcine effectively separates the refractory metals from the insoluble base metals. Co, Ni and Cu can be recovered from the oxidic residue by conventional processing methods. The leach solution is purified and then treated to recover the refractory metals as Cr203, NH4VO3, (NH4)6Mo7024?4H2O and H2WO4. The purity of the products is sufficient for their use in many metallurgical applications. The Na+ values in the leach solution are recovered as Na2CO3(or NaHC03) and are recycled to the calcination step. It is shown that the process can accommodate a wide range of feed compositions and generates a minimum of aqueous effluents.

The low-volatile, or smokeless, coal field of southern West Virginia is in Fayette, Raleigh, Wyoming, Mercer, Summers and McDowell counties, in the extreme southern portion of the state, and extends into the adjacent counties of Tazewell and Buchanan in Virginia. McDowell County is the largest producer, with Fayette and Raleigh counties next. The total area of the field (Fig. 1) is approximately 1600 square miles, or 1,024,000 acres. The percentage of volatile matter in the various seams ranges from 15 to 26 per cent, The upper limit of true low-volatile coal is usually considered to be 23 per cent volatile matter; above this point, the coal usually is classed as medium volatile. This limit will be used in this paper. Geological Position of Seams The smokeless seams are among the oldest coal seams in the country, as the Pocahontas group of rocks is the lowest member of the coal-bearing series and rests on top of the Mauch Chunk red shale, in or below which no coal seams of any importance occur. The Pocahontas group, or Lower Pottsville measures, has a thickness of 750 ft. in southern McDowell County, which decreases to about 350 ft. at Prince, on the New River, in Fayette County, 50 miles to the northeast. In this group, at various points, 12 coal beds have been found, of which 4 have been found in workable thickness and are now being mined. The New River group, or Middle Pottsville measures, is just above the Pocahontas group and varies in thickness from 1300 ft. in southern McDowell County to about 700 ft. along New River. At various places, 16 beds of smokeless coal have been identified in this group, of which 5 have been found in workable thickness and are now being mined. A general columnar section of these strata is shown on Fig. 2. The workable seams in these strata, arranged in geological sequence, are as shown on page 77.

"This paper summarizes available information on the characteristics and properties of deep-mixed soilcement produced by the wet method. The topics covered in this paper include: unit weight, unconfined compressive strength, strength variability for field mixed materials, influence of curing time, influence of consolidation pressure, Young’s modulus, differences in strength and stiffness between small and large samples, creep deformations, Poisson’s ratio, and tensile strength. In addition, this paper discusses the development of design considerations and recommended property values for a project that uses soilcement to protect an existing dam penstock from loads applied by an overlying stability berm. Some of the key recommendations for the deep-mixed soil-cement to be used in this project are that (1) a curved strength envelope that includes tensile strength can be used in the analysis, (2) the stress-strain and strength properties can be characterized using Duncan and Chang's (1970) hyperbolic model, and (3) a specification based on the median unconfined compressive strength value is appropriate.INTRODUCTIONFor many projects, including foundation and embankment support, deep mixing can be designed based on simplified procedures and following standardized guidelines (e.g., FHWA 2013). However for unusually complex or critical projects, it is often necessary to perform numerical analyses, and in order to perform these numerical analyses well, a thorough understanding of the material properties is needed.This paper summarizes information on the characteristics and properties of deep-mixed soil-cement produced by the wet method, and it discusses the development of design considerations and recommended property values for a specific project, herein referred to as the penstock project, that requires numerical analyses. For the penstock project, a horseshoe-shaped enclosure of soil-cement is being considered beside and above an existing dam penstock to protect it from loads applied by an overlying stability berm that will be constructed for seismic remediation. The concept is to use soilcement created by the deep mixing method along the sides of the penstock and to use compacted soilcement above the deep mixing to create the crown of the protective soil-cement zone around the penstock. For this application, the soil-cement stiffness, rather than its strength, is the controlling design parameter. To achieve the necessary soil-cement stiffness, the strength will be high enough that the factor-of-safety values against instability along potential failure surfaces passing through the soil-cement are high. Following conventional practice, the soil-cement acceptance criteria will be based on the unconfined compressive strength, and the specified strength will be selected to produce the desired modulus value."

In a conventional zinc refinery plant, zinc concentrates were roasted at 950°C. The calcine was ground and leached in a series of leaching vessels using sulfuric acid. The pH in the first leaching vessel was maintained at 2.5, while the pH of the solution exiting the last vessel was about 5.4. The leached residue typically contained (in percent) 0.1 Ag, 0.2 As, 0.7 Cd, 2 Cu, 15 Fe, 10 Pb, and 15 Zn, and it was classified as hazardous material according to the EP-toxicity test. In order to make the residue non-hazardous, and to recover most of the metal values from the residue, a brine leach process was developed. The process consisted of leaching the zinc leach residue in CaCI, brine solution at pH 2 for 1 hour at 90°C. Silver extraction was about 95 percent, while lead, copper, cadmium, zinc, and iron extractions were about 80, 50, 50, 30, and less than 0.5 percent, respectively. More extreme conditions of acidity could have been used in the leaching stage to increase zinc dissolution, but iron dissolution would have significantly increased which would have complicated subsequent recovery steps. The leached and washed residue passed the EP-toxicity leach test and could be disposed as non-hazardous. Silver, copper, and lead in the leach solution were recovered by zinc cementation, while zinc and cadmium were recovered by sulfide precipitation. The resulting solution can be recycled in the process after magnesium precipitation.
