Before and during in situ mining at the Santa Cruz In Situ Copper Mining Research Project test site, hydraulic testing was conducted at injection and recovery test wells to characterize patterns of fluid movement in the 5-spot well field. Testing included borehole spinner flow meter surveys, single-well and multiple-well injection and recovery tests, straddle packer injection tests, and bromide pulse tracer tests. Results of hydraulic testing for determination of fluid flow regimes were used to modify well and mining zone hydraulics for the purpose of increasing fluid migration in flow pathways of the mining zone with higher copper grade.

Mineralisation was identified at Gladstone Hill as far back as the late 1870's û early 1880's, shortly after the initial discovery of Martha Hill. Indeed, early recovery problems from the Martha Hill mineralisation led to the preferred development of are bodies within what is now the Union Hill Joint Venture tenement; ore bodies such as Silverton, Amaranth, Union to name a few. Work at Gladstone Hill is carried under the Union Hill Joint Venture, a 50:50 joint venture between Auag Resources Ltd - manager (a fully owned subsidiary of Otter Gold Mines Ltd) and Welcome Gold Mines Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of the Normandy Group). The joint venture participants also operate the adjacent Martha Hill operation. Mineralisation of Gladstone Hill, as with mineralisation at the adjacent Martha Hill, has been interpreted as a low sulphidation epithermal Ag-Au system hosted within hydrothermally altered andesites of the lower Coromandel Group. Drilling in recent years has successfully identified extensive mineralisation associated with the Gladstone vein set and the more recently identified high grade Moonlight Lode. Veining ranges in character from thin stock works to broader lode-style banded chalcedonic to cherty quartz. Visible gold is rare, with mineralisation generally associated with very fine-grained pyrite, arsenopyrite and minor electrum. The potential for the Gladstone Hill area is yet to be clearly defined as drilling to date has yet to close off mineralisation both along strike and down dip. If further drilling is successful, the joint venture partners believe Gladstone Hill could contribute significantly to the economic future of current operations.

At this point, you decide to take your crew and travel on foot in the belt entry that is on a neutral split of air. We discuss the mechanical characteristics of underground structures that are subjected to vertical oscillations. Under such circumstances - expected when an earthquake rupture occurs very close to highly developed urban areas - the conventional seismic analysis, which mainly considers horizontal shear oscillations, may not be fully valid. Our analysis, based on the elastic wave theory, shows the effects of vertical disturbances and the generation mechanism of the unique damage patterns observed on the occasion of the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu (Kobe) Earthquake. Wir diskutieren über die mechanischen Eigenschaften der unterirdischen Strukturen, die sich vertikalen Schwingungen aussetzen. The various ion exchange reactions occurring during the restoration of formations contaminated with ammonia during in situ uranium leaching are reviewed. Data are presented on the restoration of a previously leached laboratory packed column using line saturated brine. Although this restoration fluid selectively and effectively removed the ammonia, 24.5 pore volumes are required to reduce the ammonia concentration from 500 to 3 ppm. The presence of NaCl in the restoration fluid is beneficial in + improving the selectivity of the system for NH removal and reducing ca++ ion consumption.

Before this bill can be reported out it will be necessary for the House Committee on -interstate and foreign commerce to hold hearings. This will not be done unless the engineers of the country show interest -and demand action which should be taken immediately after the recess ends and Congress reconvenes this fall. Surveys and maps have been made in this country ever since Captain John Smith mapped Chesapeake Bay about. 300 years ago, but it is only in comparatively recent years that the need for accurate maps has been keenly felt by those engaged in the industrial' and commercial development of the country.

Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the orebody to enhance rock mass cavability is gaining acceptance in underground cave mining applications. Assisting cavability is becoming important as an increasing number of cave mines are being implemented in hard, deep and competent rock masses where clamping stresses are higher and cave column heights may be in excess of 1000 m. Propagating large caves to surface in such conditions can be challenging as risks such as slowed propagation and air gaps can develop during the process.Underground-based hydraulic fracturing is routinely used at Cadia East as a means of preconditioning the orebody to assist in cave propagation, fragmentation and seismicity reduction. This paper presents a summary of a surface-based hydraulic fracture program that was successfully implemented to assist in the propagation of the Cadia East Panel Cave 1 (CE-PC1) cave to surface through competent overlying rock masses. In this case study, the propagation of the CE-PC1 cave slowed as the cave grew past 750 m in height, initiating a Trigger Action Response Plan regarding the cave propagation rate. Surface-based hydraulic fracturing was subsequently used to stimulate the cave to propagate through the final 450 m to surface. The guiding principle in developing this plan resulted from evaluating potential future markets for oil, the quantity of mineable oil shale and the optimum rate of production comensurate with market demand on the available oil from shale. In addition, the rate of production may depend upon a solution to the problems of scarcity of resources other than oil shale. The rate of production finally will tend to establish the choice of technologies with these limits. The principle components discussed will be: 1) The place of oil shale among the various energy sources and its relative adaptability for use in the area of major consumptive demand. 2) A recalculation of the reserves and their classification on the basis of quantity, grade - gallons per ton, - and physical characteristics principally thickness, overburden and depth.

Surface tension, density and viscosity coefficient of acidic copper sulfate solutions simulating electrolyte solution for electrolytic production of copper have been measured and are summarized as a function of the solution composition and temperature. Nickel sulfatc is taken to be a representative coexisting sulfate that affects the physical properties of the copper sulfate electrolyte solution. The sulfates in the solutions, including sulfuric acid, increase the physical properties under consideration. Gelatin, representing organic additives for electrolyte solution, was found to sensitively affect the surface tension of the solution at low concentration of up to 200mgIL. The surface tension was markedly lowered by the addition of gelatin and the increasing concentration of gelatin led to a more pronounced decrease in the observed values. The surface tension gradually increases with time after addition of gelatin and the increase is enhanced by higher acid concentration and higher temperature. The observed change in the surface tension is considered to reflect the preferential adsorption of gelatin to the bubble-solution interface and the decomposition of gelatin due to hydrolysis to form various molecules having smaller molecular weights.

The tremendous growth in grinding mill size and horsepower during the '70s demanded advancements in gear cutting technology and equipment for the '80s. Computers are used as an aid in the design and selection of the mill drive system; sophisticated computer graphics are used to create manufacturing drawings; and a new generation of gear cutting machines are used to manufacture the gears. These new gear cutters can generate-cut gears over 40' (12.2 m) in diameter at an AGMA quality level exceeding the currenty acceptable standards. The precision of the resulting gear assures maximum tooth contact, which will result in longer gear set life.

The influence of solution ionic strength (IS) and electrolyte valence on the flotation behavior of malachite has been investigated. The microflotation tests were conducted over a range of solution IS (1?300 mM) at a constant speed (340 rpm), pH (9.5), flotation time (10 min), and sodium oleate dosage (5.3×10-7 moles/g). The size of malachite ranged from 45 to 53 µm, and two different types of electrolytes (NaCl and CaCl2) were employed. Electrophoretic mobility was also measured over the same IS range employed in the microflotation study. Overall, strong coupled effect of solution IS and ion valence was observed. Specifically, the flotability of malachite increased with increasing IS in the presence of monovalent cation (Na+) while the flotability increased up to 30 mM and decreased with increasing IS in the presence of divalent cation (Ca2+). Notably, the flotability of malachite was greater with the presence of Na+ compared with Ca2+ under high IS conditions (IS>30 mM). Consistent trend for Na+ versus Ca2+ was observed from the flotation results with different SO dosages. The characterization and flotation results suggested that the trend was likely attributed to the increased unfavorable interaction between malachite and bubble via the charge reversal of bubbles and malachite at higher IS in the presence of Ca2+.

A new method has been developed for handling supplies in underground bituminous coal mines. A survey indicates industry wide implementation potential for the proposed method. Reduction of supply handling accidents' by as much as 73% and improvements in the productivity of face operations by at least 3% are anticipated benefits. The new method is based on the palletization of daily supplies and the use of a forklift for carrying out the handling tasks at the underground section. A prototype of the forklift has been delivered to the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The forklift has demonstrated several important features necessary for underground supply handling such as compactness, maneuverability, visibility, ease of control and auxiliary attachments for hoisting, carrying timber and pulling. Design improvements are recommended for future generation underground forklifts. These relate to higher speed, increased battery duty cycle, higher payload and modified traction/steering to eliminate plowing of soft mine floors.

Means of improving the U.S. Bureau of Mines Brattice Window Method have been investigated by Goodyear Aerospace Corporation (GAC). An extensive series of laboratory tests at GAC and a series of tests in three operating coal mines of the Bethlehem Mines Corporation were conducted. The GAC laboratory tests defined the window coefficients and the accuracy of the method using different measuring techniques for a range of window sizes and shapes with window areas from 0.0873 to 4.0 square feet for flow velocities through the windows of from 100 to 1000 FPM. The results indicated that for the range of window sizes and window flow velocities investigated a single window coefficient value can be used with little error for each window size and for each flow direction, for the investigated range of window flow velocities. The mine tests developed techniques for quickly erecting the Temporary Test Stopping (TTS) in a cross-out, making the measurements, taking down the TTS and moving it and the test equipment to the next cross-cut. The time period for the total cycle ranged from 15-45 minutes depending on the properties of the cross-cut's surfaces. The total weight of the TTS and test equipment carried by the two miners conducting the tests was approximately 40 pounds. Correlation was obtained between the sum of the leakage values past 10 consecutive individual stoppings using the brattice window method and the value for the difference in the airway flow values before and after the 10 consecutive stoppings when the value for the sum of the leakages for the 10 was significant when com¬pared to the airway flow values. The mine tests reiterated the importance of using the largest TTS window(s) consistant with making accurate anemometer measurements for the best results with the brattice window method.

El litio se considera un elemento estratégico debido a sus diversos usos en industrias tales como la electrónica o la automotriz. Por ello, se debe entender cuáles son los ambientes geológicos (pegmatitas, ambientes volcánicos, ambientes metamórficos y cuencas endorreicas en relación a salares y salmueras) asociados donde alberguen los minerales de litio (silicatos, sales y/o salmueras). Para llegar a ello, se deben conocer las características macroscópicas geológicas de campo y fundamentar su interpretación por medio del apoyo de la instrumentación en los tipos de análisis químicos, mineralógicos, las características microscópicas petrográficas y la caracterización puntual de algunas muestras por la microscopía electrónica de barrido (SEM). Por tanto, en esta publicación se presentan datos preliminares de ocurrencias con valores anómalos de litio en afloramientos de rocas volcánicas, intrusivas (graníticas), aplíticas y metamórficas dentro de las unidades morfo estructurales del Altiplano y la Cordillera Oriental, ubicadas en las regiones de Cusco y Puno. En la zona de Corani (Puno) afloran rocas volcánicas tipo tobas de lapilli con altos contenidos de litio entre 2815 a 3070 ppm, cuya presencia se relaciona a los minerales de micas de litio, denominado lepidolita, como constituyentes inmersas en agregados granoblásticos de cloritas y silicatos, perteneciente al miembro Sapanuta de la formación Quenamari. Por su parte, en la zona de Ocongate (Cusco) las ocurrencias con anomalías de litio (1096 ppm) se encuentran asociados en clinocloros y/o amorfos asociados como constituyente dentro de cuerpos de areniscas, con presencia de vetas de cuarzo, sulfatos de cobre, óxidos de hierro, trazas de pirita y calcopirita, pertenecientes a la formación Ananea.

"In 2015, 40 longwall mines provided nearly 60% of the US coal production from underground mining methods. This represents a substantial, yet gradual increase from just under 50% over the last 5 years. As a result of this increased production share, the percentage of ground fall related fatalities in longwall mines has also increased when compared to all US underground coal mines. Additionally, about 80% of ground fall related fatalities have occurred in areas where the roof was supported. In an attempt to better understand the status quo of current US longwall support practices, a sample of 21 longwall mines were visited, representing about 40% of the currently active longwall mines in 4 of the 5 major US longwall producing regions. The resulting data was obtained from a wide variety of overburden depths, geologic conditions, mining heights, ground conditions, support practices, and gateroad configurations. The data collected is reported using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results from the research update previous efforts in classifying mining accidents and injuries as well as current support practices. This data provides a necessary background for future research aimed at further reduction of ground fall accidents and injuries. INTRODUCTION Maintaining ground stability in gateroad entries is essential for longwall productivity and safety (Campoli, 2015). In 2015, 148 unintentional roof falls were reported in US longwall mines. About 34% of these resulted in mineworker injuries. Safety considerations not only include injury from roof and rib falls but also egress from the longwall face during an emergency (Mucho et al., 1999). Over the past 30 years, a number of researchers have studied longwall tailgate support performance (Mirabile, 2015). This research aims to take a snapshot of the ground support installed in modern US longwall mines and provide a supplement and update to the overview provided by Barczak (2005). This will provide a framework for future research into improving gateroad support systems. BACKGROUND Large unplanned roof falls at or above the primary support or those impeding travel and/or ventilation must be reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Reportable roof falls, normalized based on production in million metric tons, generally relate to the amount of roof exposed during the mining process (Pappas and Mark, 2012) and provide an evidence-based statistical background for this review of current support practices. Figure 1 shows the reportable roof fall rate in US underground longwall mines for the period 2006-2015 (MSHA, 2016). Over the past decade, roof fall rates have shown a gradual decrease with numbers now at a rate nearly half of what was observed just five years ago. However, over the past few years, roof fall rates in US longwall mines appear to have stagnated at levels just over 1 per 2,000,000 tonnes mined."

Barrick Goldstrike’s (Goldstrike) AA Heap Leach Pad is an HDPE lined facility used for gold recovery from low grade ores using conventional cyanide heap leach technology, operated from 1987 through 1999. Goldstrike prepared a unique reclamation plan for the AA Leach Pad Facility to provide for a cost-effective, environmentally sound facility closure and to fulfill the State of Nevada’s closure requirements. Traditional Nevada leach pad closure has involved rinsing to reduce cyanide concentration to an acceptable level, followed by reclamation. However, certain metals and compounds are not typically reduced by rinsing and some constituents may increase in concentration with rinsing. A closure scenario to effect limited infiltration through installation of a capillary cover for the leach pad was developed. The capillary cover was constructed by placing a fine-grained layer above the coarse-grained spent leach material to create a capillary break. In an arid climate such as Nevada, the fine-grained layer will rarely reach full saturation and the cover will be able to store water during precipitation and allow removal of water through evaporation and transpiration (ET) during the growing season. A 1.22 m (4 ft) cover thickness was selected as the optimum design cover thickness. The drainage network on the surface of the re-contoured AA Heap Leach Pad was specifically designed to enhance the revegetation, reclamation, and sediment yield control aspects of the AA Heap Leach Pad closure, while resulting in a natural looking surface, compatible with the surrounding topography. Adjacent natural topographic features were used to establish target design parameters for re-contouring and erosion control design.
