Past surface-mining operations in Appalachia primarily followed mountain con-tours. It is estimated that about 18,000 mi. of highwalls are exposed throughout Appalachia. An evaluation procedure for determining the secondary mining potential (SMP) of these highwalls has been proposed. Sixteen parameters affecting the SMP were isolated. These are grouped in four major categories: geologic conditions, existing infrastructure, site conditions, and environmental conditions. The parameters were then ranked by their impact on SMP and assigned weighting factors. A simple mathematical procedure yields an SMP number (0 < SMP < 100), which may then be used to compare alternative sites and technologies. Determination of limits and ranges while grouping data was aided by field visits to over 40 exposed highwalls in Eastern Kentucky. An interactive program has been developed to rapidly evaluate the SMP for pre-mined sites. The mathematical procedure estimates the relative potential (i.e., techno-logical feasibility) for remining for three predominant secondary mining methods: augering, Hi-wall mining, and underground mining. Other secondary mining methods are briefly reviewed and compared.

The behaviour of single piles under lateral dynamic loading is very critical and the study is still a current field of research since 1950&apos;s. Though many methods have been developed analytically to estimate the dynamic lateral stiffness, very limited dynamic testing on full scale piles were carried out to study the response of piles under lateral dynamic loading. Hence, field lateral dynamic vibration tests are conducted on driven precast concrete square pile of 400mm size and driven cast in-situ concrete piles of 400mm and 500 mm diameter at a petrochemical complexes site at Haldia (India). The results of steady state and free vibrations tests are discussed herein and compared with the response of the piles estimated from PILAY.

On the basis of in situ study of pillar loading at different sites, an attempt is made in this paper to visualize the development of mining induced stress under varying geo-mining conditions. Field study demonstrated interesting interaction between size of pillar and nature of roof rock mass under the influence of increasing dimension of the excavation. Stiffness of pillars/overburden, extraction ratio and depth cover are observed to be the important parameters for the estimation of mining induced stress over the pillar. These parameters influence, both, the value of ultimate induced stress (vertical) and its range of influence ahead of the face line. Further, it is observed that the change in width/height (w/h) ratio of a pillar has got considerable influence over the nature of mining induced stress over it. Impact of highly dynamic nature of mining induced stress over the natural supports is observed to be the most serious factor for the safety of working under a hard and massive roof rock mass. On the basis of these observations, a conceptual model of interaction between the natural support and overlying strata is discussed in the paper. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Aufgrund ist in situ Studium von Säule Beladung an verschiedenen Stellen, ein Versuch in diesem Papier gemacht, die Entwicklung des Bergbaus vostellen sich, Spannung unter Änderung von Geo Bergbau von Bedingungen hat veranlaßt. Feld Studium hat interessante Wechselwirkung zwischen Größe von Säule und Natur von Dach Felsen Masse unter dem Einfluß von Vermehrung Dimension des excavation vorgeführt. Steifheit des Säulen Overburden, Herausziehung Verhältnisses und Tiefe sind beobachtet bedeckt, die wichtigen Parameter für die Schätzung des Bergbaus zu sein, Spannung über der Säule hat veranlaßt. Diese Parameter beeinflussen, beide, der Wert allerletzter veranlaßter Spannung (senkrecht) und sein Bereich des Einflusses voraus von der Gesicht Linie. Weiter ist, es beobachtet, daß die Änderung in Breite Höhe (W H) Verhältnis einer Säule beträchtlichen Einfluß über der Natur des Bergbaus erhalten hat, Spannung hat darüber veranlaßt. Schlag sehr dynamischer Natur des Bergbaus ist Spannung über den natürlichen Stützen beobachtet hat veranlaßt, der ernsteste Faktor für die Sicherheit des Arbeitens unter einer harten und massiven Dach Felsen Masse zu sein. Aufgrund dieser Beobachtungen, ein begriffliches Modell der Wechselwirkung zwischen der natürlichen Stütze und der überlagernde strata ist im Papier diskutiert. RESUME: En se basant sur dans l&apos;étude de situ de chargement de pilier aux sites différents, une tentative est faite dans ce papier pour envisager le développement de creuse la tension persuadée sous varier de conditions de geo creuse. L&apos;étude de champs a démontré l&apos;interaction intéressante entre la taille de pilier et la nature de masse de rocher de toit sous l&apos;influence d&apos;augmenter de dimension de l&apos;excavation. La raideur de piliers overburden, la proportion d&apos;extraction et la couverture de profondeur est observée pour être les paramètres importants pour le jugement de creuse la tension persuadée par-dessus le pilier. Ces paramètres influencent, les deux, la valeur de tension persuadée ultime (vertical) et sa gamme d&apos;influence en avant de la ligne de face. This paper is one of a series on mining methods and costs being published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The operations of the Quartz Hill Mining Co., near Dewey, Mont., afford an interesting example of the cost of mining small bodies of direct shipping ore; they also illustrate the effect of the unavoidable periods of unusually high exploration and development costs in this type of mining upon the cost per ton of producing ore. The importance of skilled geological guidance and the necessity of avoiding unnecessary overhead and capital expense at small mines are shown. Operating conditions at Quartz Hill are typical of those in many other mining districts of southwestern Montana. It is believed that the costs presented here may be of value in the preliminary estimation of costs to be expected by conservative operators under similar conditions elsewhere. The information contained in this paper was obtained during a visit to the Quartz Hill mine in August 1936.

Comparison of various technologies for uranium recovery from sulphuric acid leach solutions shows that Resin-in-Pulp (RIP) and/or Solvent extraction (SX) based processing routes are usually cost effective (11). A combined RIP-SX recovery-purification route and a CCD-SX recovery-purification route were investigated and optimised. The design basis used for the investigation was a production rate of 200 kg/h U3O8 over a solution concentration range of 40 to 1500 mg/L U3O8. The OPEX for the RIP-SX processing route was found to be sensitive to the variation in uranium concentration in the leach liquor. One of the main drivers for this trend is the leach acid concentration. Conversely, the CAPEX of the CCD-SX processing route was sensitive to the uranium concentration in the leach liquor. The leach acid concentration only affected the OPEX of the CCD-SX processing route modestly, as the bulk of the acid is recovered in a pre-leach circuit. Contrary to expectation, the effect of extractant loss assumptions on the overall processing route economics was found to be modest to insignificant. It should be noted that the CCD-SX processing route OPEX was more sensitive to extractant loss assumptions than the RIP-SX processing route OPEX. Economic optimum wash ratios were determined for the CCD-SX processing route and increased with leach concentration ? the increase in wash ratio was less than proportional. A 5-stage CCD configuration was found optimal over the concentration range investigated.

"A recent amendment to Section 36(11)(e) of the Income Tax Act, 53 of 1968 (Tax Act) now extends the allowable deduction of ‘capital expenditure’ incurred by mining companies pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA). In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB 2016), the allowable deduction has been extended to include expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements as per the MPRDA. Interestingly, what necessitated the amendment was the need to recognize SLP requirements and to circumvent administrative difficulties for mining companies and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) in differentiating the use of developmental infrastructure by employees or the community. The successful implementation of such a deduction hinges on a sound SLP system. However, given the challenges within the current SLP system, this amendment could be considered somewhat premature. IntroductionSection 36(11) of the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962 (Tax Act) enabled mining companies to deduct certain capital expenditure in lieu of its other sections. In particular, it made provision for mining companies to deduct capital expenditure incurred pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA), but excluding capital expenditure incurred in respect of infrastructure or environmental rehabilitation. As such, mining companies could only deduct such capital expenditure that related directly to their employees and not to the wider community (Clegg, 2018).In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB, 2016) (South Africa, 2016a), the recent amendment to Section 36 extends the relief provided under section 36(11)(e) to include capital expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of the Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements of the MPRDA. In other words, the capital expenditure incurred by the mining company for the benefit of the people living in mining communities. To qualify for such a deduction, the infrastructure erected or developed by the mining company should reflect what was agreed between the mining company and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) as per the SLP requirements of the MPRDA (TLAB 2016)."

In 2005, a total of 263 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.8% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.0% (n=121) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=32; 12.2%), copper ore (n=31; 11.8%), and lead and/or zinc ore (n=16; 6.1%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=52; 19.8%), followed by Alaska (n=27; 10.3%).

The Meikle Mine is a high grade, underground goldmine utilizing primary-secondary longhole open stoping with delayed backfill to produce 2700 tpd(3000 stpd) of ore. Hot and reactive ground conditions were encountered early on in the mine life. Ground temperatures up to 166°C (330°F) were measured. In the early stages of mining, the mine experienced premature detonations using different explosive products. The learning curve to safely mine this high-grade gold deposit in hot and severely reactive ground was indeed very steep. Currently, the Meikle Mine uses a special buffered bulk emulsion in all blasts to address hot and reactive ground concerns. In addition, exacting procedures are also followed to ensure safe work with explosives. The combination of new explosives technology and strict loading procedures permits high mine productivity with the highest degree of safety.

The history of the Bunker Hill mine dates back to August 26, 1885, when Noah S. Kellogg found the outcrop of the Bunker Hill orebody on the hillside of Milo Gulch above the present town of Wardner, Idaho. A small concentrator was erected in 1886, and before the railroad came, the mine output was transported by mule teams to the head of navigation on Coeur d&apos;Alene Lake. After ten years of production, an interest was purchased in the Tacoma smelter at Tacoma, Wash., to which the entire output was shipped. In 1916 and 1917, a modern lead smelting plant and refinery was erected, and a modern electrolytic zinc reduction plant was built in 1927-1928 by the Sullivan Mining Co. which was 50 pct owned (and now totally owned) by the Bunker Hill Co.

Rampura Agucha open pit mine has successfully been excavated to a depth of 320 m, incorporating multistage working. The key to success is the implementation of presplitting as control blast measures at every stage of mining, including intermediate cut backs, in addition to the final wall. The major challenges encountered in establishing presplitting in the hang wall as compared to the footwall of the mine are:reversely dipping foliation, ie dipping into the hang wall itselfstriking obliquely at an angle of 20–30&#176; with regards to the general strike of the pit wallthe presence of numerous geological planes of weaknesses like major faults, slips, etc.Control blast parameters like hole inclination, spacing and stand-off with buffer row were chosen initially from the literature survey and were subsequently fine-tuned by field trials to the mine geo-mining conditions of the hang wall. ABSTRACT : Rock mass classifications RMR, Q and GSI do not suggest decreasing modulus ratio with the decrease in the quality of rock. These have been linked to joint factor, Jf , for better prediction. An engineering classification is suggested based on strength and modulus applicable to both intact and jointed rocks. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Fels Masse Klassifizierungen RMR, schlägt Q und GSI daß das Abnehmen von modulus Verhältnis mit der Abnahme in der Qualität des Felsen nicht vor. Diese sind zu gemeinschaftlichem Faktor, Jf, für bessere Voraussage verknüpft worden. Eine technische Klassifizierung wird auf der Basis auf Kraft und modulus vorgeschlagen die zutreffend sind zu beiden unversehrten und jointed Felsen. RESUME: RMR de classifications de masse de Rocher, Q et GSI ne suggèrent pas la proportion de modulus décroissante avec la diminution dans la qualité de rocher. Ceux-ci ont été reliés au facteur de jointure, Jf, pour mieux la prédiction. Une classification construisant est suggérée basé sur la force et modulus applicables intacts et les rochers de jointed.

While the Kansas River Tunnel is a relatively short, small diameter tunnel, the shaft excavation methods implemented were long and large on innovation and use of reverse circulation drilling equipment. ATS Drilling, L.P. used mechanical excavation techniques for both soil and rock segments of the 42.7 m (140 feet) and 38.1 m (125 feet) deep shafts that were 2.9 m (9.5 feet) and 4.1m (13.5 feet) diameter, respectively.

There has been much progress on the issue of acid drainage over the past 20 years; however, significant challenges remain. The International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) is attempting to address them by globally coordinating acid drainage information sharing and research. INAP pursues three branches of activities: it links AD research, practice, and people; it organises, sponsors, and participates in regional workshops as a forum for technology transfer; and it instigates and funds key acid drainage research projects. Through these activities INAP is helping the industry deal with what is arguably its most serious legacy issue.

The problems of magnetite build-up have plagued the non-ferrous pyrometallurgical industry for many years. To better understand these problems, a study was undertaken to determine the thermodynamic variables that affect the behaviour of magnetite under different smelting conditions. Equilibration studies were performed in the nickel smelting systems of matte-gas and matte-slag(silica saturation)-gas. The relationship of thermodynamic variables such as temperature, sulphur and oxygen partial pressure and matte grade on iron and magnetite activities were calculated and the significance on smelting parameters such as metal losses and partition coefficients were defined. The experimental data from this study were employed to develop practical methods which could be used to control the build up of magnetite, as well as to obtain additional metallurgical benefits. In general, a lower sulphur partial pressure and higher temperature operation was shown to enhance the metallurgical benefits of nickel smelting by decreasing the magnetite activity. Operating in this manner can also have added benefits such as higher metal recoveries, more efficient vessel utilisation and efficiency and lower smelter emissions at equivalent or higher primary furnace matte grades.

This custom has obviously died out, be it that the articles are nowadays of such a high standard that nothing can be added or be it that the receivers of the Journal suffer from an information inflation and do not read the articles anymore. I now have the temerity to offer a discussion to an article that recently appeared in the journal, namely ?The evaluation of rock brittleness concept on rotary blast hole drills? by R. Altindag (J.S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metall., vol, 102(2002), pp. 61?66.

The Bibliographic Data Base contained in the present volume is the result of a literature search conducted as one task of the Bureau of Mines project concerned with research in borehole assay technology. The data base includes articles, symposia, books, corporate and government reports, patents, and other literature concerned with some aspect of borehole logging, from January 1969 through December 1975. Occasional updating to keep the data base current is anticipated. The remainder of the intro¬duction will be devoted to the explanation of the organization of each entry, along with the translation of terms and abbreviations used in the text. Each entry contains six sections. These include an ID code, a title, an author section, a source section, an abstract, and a descriptor section. The first item listed in an entry is the ID code. This serves to identify an entry. It consists of the first six characters of the first author&apos;s (or editor if no authors are involved) last name, along with the last two digits of the year of publication. A letter sometimes follows the year of publication to assure a unique alphanumeric code. For example, if an author named Wilson writes more than one piece of literature in a given year (for example, 1972), the ID code for the entries identifying these pieces of literature would be identical. Therefore, to allow for unique ID codes, the first piece would he identified as "WILSON 72,&apos;, the second piece as "WILSON 72A", the third "WILSON 72B", and so on.

Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating new techniques to improve the of mineral to recover water lost in the waste slurry, and to produce dewatered solid dewatering s suitable for disposal. As part of this investigation, a study was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of dewatering Alaska placer effluent. Based on the laboratory tests, preliminary field tests were conducted on three placer mines in Alaska. At these mines, the water recovered from the placer effluent (250 to 23,000 NTU) exhibited turbidities of 20 to 240 NTU. In the second year of the project, a large-scale dewatering unit was set up at a mine located in the Livengood district. The feed, at flow rates up to 935 gpm, was mixed with dilute PEO solution in a flexible plastic hose with and without static mixers. Feed to the dewatering unit generally ranged between 300 and 26,500 NTU and required PEO dosages of 0.02 to 0.14 lb per 1,000 gal to produce water from the screen underflow with turbidities of 20 to 50 NTU. During this period, a small unit was also operated at Dow rams of 10 to 25 gpm at sewn sites throughout Alaska, with the effluent from four of the sites being dewatered successfully.
