The tremendous engineering advances occurring during this past century are very evident within the boundaries of the Anthracite Section of AIME. The Steelton plant of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, located along the Susquehanna River just east of the Commonwealth's capital at Harrisburg, for more than 105 years has experienced a most dynamic life which has paralleled America's industrial growth. (Figure 1) In June 1865, just after the Civil War, a group of men met to organize the Pennsylvania Steel Company. The war had brought into sharp focus the vital importance of the railroads to the country's expansion. Until that time wrought iron rails were used, and the replacing of track after only several months wear had become an almost unbearable cost. The spirit of free, competitive enterprise and the prospects of a lucrative market compelled these men to form that first Pennsylvania Steel Company and to develop better rail products. They issued the following statement: "...our desire to free ourselves from dependence upon a foreign market (has) led to the organization of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, and the parties who have connected themselves with it are determined to produce upon American soil all the principal manufactures of steel that are now, at such a serious cost for freight, commission, insurance, exchange, duty, etc., and often, with so much delay and uncertainty, imported from abroad. (We) are preparing to establish near the consumer, works at which articles of accustomed pattern will be promptly produced, and from the

"At the 95th CIM Annual General Meeting in Calgary, 1993, a paper entitled “Progress on Futuristic Mining Technologies” was presented(Matthews and Sarin), in which they outlined the goal of continuous excavation of hard rock and some of the technologies being developed to achieve it. The subject continues to be featured in periodic reviews and articles in the literature, (Gertsch, 1994; E&MJ, 1995). Matthews and Sarin note the considerable success of the development and application of continuous mining technologies in the soft rock under-ground mining industry, especially those in coal and potash, with major benefit to overall production, productivity and economic viability. It is the belief that similar achievements can be realised in the underground hard rock mining which continues to drive the development of hardrock continuous mining technology.This overview has been prepared specifically for this issue of the CIM Bulletin. It attempts to tie together current advancements in continuous mining in soft rock (where remote control and automation are already well established) with the background and status of development in hard rock continuous mining. Following a brief review of key factors and machine types, soft rock aspects are discussed, then a more detailed review is given of hard rock technology, with particular reference to Canada’s HRDK Mining Research Ltd. and their key role.The mining industry has long been at the forefront of technology development, for example, the application of the early steam engine to reach reserves at greater depth for dewatering mines in the industrial revolution. By necessity, the individual characteristics of seams and orebodies dictate the mining method, continually presenting mining engineers with new challenges. One of these is the extraction process itself and the goal of replacement of the drill-blast-muck cycle by continuous excavation. Very soft rocks have always been mineable using some form of cutting, even with primative tools. However, as the challenge has been taken up, technologies have evolved to steadily increase the hardness of rock that can be mechanically excavated. It may surprise some readers that at least three machines have successfully cut and loaded rock with an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 250 Mpa to 300 MPa (36 000 to 43 500 psi) in field trials (Table 1)."

"This report describes an exploratory project conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a fluorite deposit near Vado, N. Mex. Results of trenching are given. Together with analyses made upon samples of the ore. The Federal Geological Survey3/ completed a preliminary geologic study and mapped the deposit during the summer of 1944. A Bureau engineer examined the deposit in August 1944. As a result of these investigations, it was concluded that the deposit contained substantial inferred ore reserves. Exploratory work was recommended to obtain information that might possibly lead to production from the property. Assistance was given the Bureau by the Geological Survey.A gasoline-powered air compressor, other equipment, and supplies were delivered to the property from January 20 to 25, 1943. Trenching began under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer on January 25, 1947, and ended on March 15, 1945. The results of trenching and sampling form he basis of this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. IT is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, R.G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervisions of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

"The exorbitant price of the land in the metropolis has restricted the horizontal expansion and compelled the owners, the developers and the engineers to opt for vertical expansion. This has resulted in the construction of high rises by extending floors of the existing buildings and developing the new ones for which deep excavation is a must. The multistoried buildings up to a certain height can be founded on shallow depth if the soil beneath can withstand the load. If not, the soil can be stabilized by the latest improvement technology to change the properties of soil to cater the desired load of the superstructures. By such practice the cost and time of completion of the substructures can be reduced in comparison to the substructures needed for deep excavation.The necessity of deep excavation cannot be ignored to create housings, underground parking lots and the other public amenities for the urban migrants in the metropolis.Although most of the metropolis have underground mapping the developers, before starting excavation should be hundred percent sure about the alignment and depth of the utilities so that the excavators do not snap the same to bring cut in water supply, power lines, telephone lines etc, resulting in hue and cry in the neighborhoods of the metropolis due to no availability of the essential services The building/structures coming on the influence zones of the deep excavation should be monitored in all sequences of excavations. In case of building underground corridors for rail or road through open deep excavation under a traffic road the developers, before commencing excavation should shift/divert the dry and wet utilities coming on the way of excavation to suitable locations. The surface traffic need to be diverted either temporarily to an adjacent alternative road or allowed to pass over a decking built over the trench of excavation for the affected length of construction. The soil support system is necessary longitudinally on the two sides covering the width of trench for building corridors. In case of building substructures of flyovers built at different plots along the alignment of the flyover or a multistoried complex built at an isolated plot, the soil support system would be necessary on all the sides covering the plot of construction.The material of construction of soil support depends on the depth, type of soil and the type of permanent structure to be developed. Probable geo-hazards inviting casualties in the deep excavation projects occur due to caving of soil, leakage of wet utilities, seepage through honey comb concrete surfaces, failure of pump used for dewatering etc. A detailed comprehensive planning, management and determination of the project authority is essential for marginalizing the casualties. These prevent unforeseen expenditure in mitigation and help to control the time and the cost over run of overall project. The engineer at site should be more a professional manager than an engineer at site. He should be conversant with the safety and environment rules and regulations applicable to deep underground projects."

The problems associated with squeezing rock conditions in tunnels are well known and have been extensively investigated in the past. Although squeezing conditions are predominantly found in tunnels developed in weak rock types it has been noted at the No. 6 Shaft of Hartebeestfontein Mine where the host rock consists of hard, brittle quartzites. This paper investigates typical time-dependent deformation mechanisms in the rock at Hartebeestfontein Mine. The paper will focus on observations made in a strike-orientated tunnel that intersected weak quartzite layers, that were sandwiched between two competent quartzite beds. The observed squeezing mechanism is dominated by creep along bedding planes with a soft talcaceous infilling that behaves in a clay-like fashion when saturated in water. Stress-induced deformation processes, some distance into the sidewall of the excavation, force the already fractured periphery of the excavation into the void. A laboratory study of the creep of intact rock and discontinuities collected at this site was conducted to characterize the time-dependent behaviour. The difference in creep rates between the two types of quartzite found at this site is described in the paper. Creep tests performed on the talcaceous infilling material found that its presence allows substantial shear creep along discontinuities. Attempts were also made to simulate the squeezing mechanism observed underground with numerical techniques. Due to the discontinuous nature of the mechanism described above, a viscoplastic displacement discontinuity technique was used as it allowed for the explicit simulation of discontinuity creep. The results of the modelling and how it compared with the observed behaviour are described in the paper. Environmental impact statement The work described in this paper will not cause any new, or contribute to any existing, hazards confronting the environment.

NKK has developed a new cold bonded pellet process. The features of this process are; 1) it is a continuous process with 10 hours curing. 2) Products can be used as materials for various metallurgical furnaces. 3) Various kinds of slag are used as binders if necessary. 4) The quality of products is excellent. The pilot plant completed in 1981 is now being successfully operated. We are also constructing a commercial plant at our Niigata works. We produced cold pellets containing carbon as material for ferroalloys (Si-Mn), by pilot plant and used them in furnaces. Consequently, considerable economic advantages were obtained.

The profitability of miscible flooding in a hypothetical target oilfield is examined. The major costs, including Windfall Prof it Tax, are identified and their re1ative importance are discussed. The sensitivity of profit to important physical and economic variables is evaluated and discussed, including variance in oil recovery, oil price, injectant requirements, injectant cost, and capital requirements. Economic sensitivities to important development and operating decisions such as timing, Spacing, Slug size, and gas recycling are also analyzed. The Windfall Profit Tax (WPT) as it applies to gas miscible EOR projects is reviewed. The effect of WPT on each of the various project cases is analyzed and the effect of reduced WPT on remaining production from existing operations is evaluated. Tax implications are compared for integrated vs. "independent" controlled projects and the alternative of expensing vs. capitalizing tertiary injectants is also evaluated. The impact of the Net Income Limitation in reducing WPT. during early and late project life is determined and discussed.

A small number of mining contractors worldwide have evolved their businesses to be able to provide a ?total service solution? to their clients. Thiess, an Australian-based international mining service provider, works with numerous clients to tailor delivery methods and commercial arrangements to suit individual projects. The benefits of Thiess? extensive experience is brought to each client and project, whilst business improvement within projects, to the mutual benefit of both the client and Thiess, is a key part of all long term contract relationships. Historically, optimal business outcomes were closely related to the achievement of production and cost performance measures. Whilst these remain fundamental to successful mining businesses, other elements of sustainability are assuming increasing importance. As a large energy user, greenhouse and energy management is becoming an important part of Thiess? business. Thiess is a signatory to Australian government initiatives such as Greenhouse Challenge Plus, and is integrating energy management into its operations and business improvement programs, in many cases to the benefit also of the client. This paper will highlight the benefits that an organisation such as Thiess can bring to a mine owner. Thiess? approach to business improvement and cost reduction, sustainability and energy management, as well as the relationship between these will also be considered. Increasingly, overall mining performance is dependent on the alignment of formally disparate elements.

Premier Mine is a large underground diamond mine, situated at Cullinan in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The mine hoists over 3 millions tons of diamond bearing kimberlite per year, from a modern, mechanized panel retreat block cave mining operation. Troughs sited at the base of the cave are developed into the overlying caved ore, allowing loading access to the ore through draw points. Trough opening is therefore a vital aspect of the mining operation. Most of the production is dependent on fast, reliable and safe trough opening. Successful trough openings are achieved under difficult mining conditions due to restricted void, long up-holes and the inherent properties of kimberlite?soft, elastic rock with a high swell factor. Early in 1998, Premier Mine undertook a joint development project (with an electronic initiation system supplier) to determine whether the use of a fully programmable electronic detonator system would enhance the mining cycle in the trough opening process. Blasting commenced in February 1998, initially with blasts of a similar size and duration to those that had been previously blasted with shock-tube systems, to confirm the operational capabilities of the blasting system. The accuracy, reliability and flexibility of the electronic delay detonators (EDDs) minimized associated risks for re-engineering of the trough opening process. Further, as blast timing was optimized, larger blasts were successfully initiated. To date over 20 troughs have been opened successfully with the use of EDDs. Not only did it take less time to open troughs, but also drilling and blasting operations have been optimized, as well as an overall improvement in safety. This paper details the benefits that EDDs have delivered to Premier Mine in this area. By using management information systems to coordinate support operations, the most productive planning decisions can be made. This paper focuses on the role of computer technology tools in achieving improved productivity from both longwall and continuous miner sections. The primary emphasis is on the planning process and the methodology developed to guarantee the best allocation of management and manpower resources.

The results of initial work indicate that for 3 of the 5 quarry sands bioleaching reduces the iron oxide content to a commercially acceptable 0.035 wt% Fe20 3, although the time taken to achieve this is 14-22 days against a target leach time of 7 day. Subsequent work has identified strains of Aspergillus niger that are more efficient at producing the array of complexing agents for iron and is yielding excellent and rapid reductions in Fe levels. Potentially, bioleaching offers a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient process for the removal of Fe from glass-making sands than conventional routes but the production of organic acids by fermentation must be achievable with low-cost substrates such as sugar-beet molasses and lactose permeates for bioleaching to offer a commercially viable alternative to treatment with hot mineral acids. Silica sands usually contain three groups of Fe minerals: iron oxyhydroxides, which comprise crystalline types such as goethite and limonite tending to occur as thin, discontinuous coatings and in cracks and crevices on the surface of the quartz; the assemblage of heavy trace minerals, which include ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, chromite and haematite, commonly present at levels of 0.1 wt% or less as discrete grains or sometimes cemented to the quartz; and clay minerals cemented in pits on the surface of the quartz and in association with weathered, discrete feldspars. The response of the assemblage of iron minerals to short periods of exposure to hot inorganic acids is broadly related to which group they belong to, those that form coatings being accessible to acid and tending to react rapidly whereas the trace minerals are usually resistant and react very slowly, if at all, and the clays are probably digested. The note reports on a preliminary study of the use of microorganisms to develop an alternative clean technology that will give results comparable to those achievable with hot inorganic mineral acids but with more environmentally acceptable procedures. Various fungi and bacteria produce organic acids when grown in certain media. When these acids come into contact with Fe-stained sand grains the iron is removed as soluble complexes. Several strains of Aspergillus niger have been found to produce organic acids from sugar, predominantly citric, gluconic and oxalic acids, their relative yields depending on cultivation medium and conditions. Sand samples were prepared from five quarries in the UK: Levenseat, Lothian; Redhill, Surrey; King's Lynn, Norfolk; Chelford, Cheshire; and Oakamoor, Staffordshire; ranging in iron oxide content from 0.035 to 0.153 wt% Fe203

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels — basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The real GDP during 2004 increased by 4.4 percent. The nominal GDP was about $11.7 trillion. Housing starts were up by slightly more than 4 percent for the year. And the nation’s unemployment rate decreased to5.5 percent in 2004 from 6 percent in 2003. Interest rates continued to be low (prime rate was 5.25 percent at the end of 2004) but have risen gradually, following rising inflation.

"INTRODUCTION Comprehensive overviews of the world-class talc deposits and related prospects in Montana were published by Olson (1976) and by Berg (1979). Both of these compilations include detailed descriptions and maps of the talc deposits and occurrences and were followed by a regional map and summary descriptions of the talc deposits published by Van Gosen et al. (1998). More recent publications, descriptions and field guides for some of the deposits include Underwood et al. (2014), Cerino et al. (2007), and Cerino (2002). The present paper focuses on some of the more recent ideas regarding talc formation that have developed since the publication of the earlier overviews. Olson (1976) reported that talc production from the deposits in southwestern Montana was over 200,000 tons in 1974 and that talc production had doubled between 1969 and 1974. The last year for which the U.S. Geological Survey published production records for talc by state was 1993. Production in Montana in 1993 was 350,000 tonnes (Virta, 1994). Remaining reserves are substantial at all three of the producing mines in the district. Minerals Technologies Inc., the parent company of Barretts Minerals Inc., stated in its 2014 annual report that it has reserves of 2,791,000 tons of talc. Imerys stated in its financial report for 2014 that it had 19,638,000 tons of proven and probable talc reserves at its North American mines. Although the Imerys reserves were not reported by individual mines or states, a large proportion of the total reserves would likely consist of the reserves at the Yellowstone mine, located south of Ennis, Montana. Talc mined in southwestern Montana is of high purity and is the quality used in a wide variety of applications including paints, ceramics, plastics, rubber, coatings, agriculture, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. GEOLOGIC SYNOPSES FOR MAJOR MINES AND COMMENTS ON REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF TALC OCCURRENCES The general geology of southwestern Montana is shown in Figure 1along with the locations of the three producing talc deposits in the area and the extent of pre-Belt marbles that host all of the talc mines and prospects. The term “pre-Belt” is used in the present paper because zircon and other radiometric data developed in recent years indicates that the metamorphic rocks that form the crystalline basement for the middle Proterozoic Belt basin in the Dillon Tectonic Block of southwestern Montana includes both Archean and Paleoproterozoic rocks (O’Neill et al., 1996; Foster et al., 2006; McDonald et al., 2012). An envelope or “corridor” has been superimposed on the geology in Figure 1 which encompasses all of the talc deposits that have a significant resource. This “talc corridor” will be discussed in later sections of this report. The more important talc deposits are discussed in this report section."

The efficiency of the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges relies on a fully informed market: shareholders and investors are fully and transparently informed of all material information relating to the shares. These principles of transparency and materiality are similarly core to the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code). The JORC (Joint Ore Reserves Committee) Code also includes a principle of competency to ensure that the person providing the material information for public disclosure is suitably qualified and experienced.Since its inclusion into the ASX (Australian Securities Exchange) Listing rules in 1989, the JORC Code has continually improved and evolved in attempts to meet the market’s need for competent, transparent and informed disclosure. The quality and effectiveness of Public Reporting in accordance with the JORC Code is under constant challenge: some practitioners argue there is insufficient regulation, while others argue the need for greater self-regulation.This paper contributes to that discourse by exploring how well the Reporting expectations are met, and, whether Public Reporting in accordance with the JORC Code has a material impact on share-price movement.CITATION:Sterk, R and Coombes, J, 2017. Empero, existe una nueva forma familia de extractos de quebracho modificados que pueden ser aplicados en los procesos de flotación. Estos reactivos orgánicos naturales, extraídos del quebracho, se aplican en bajos consumos y por tratarse de productos de origen natural, se presentan como una alternativa limpia en relación a los reactivos tradicionales. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala la utilización de diferentes extractos de quebracho modificados, dispersantes y depresores, en los ensayos de flotación de sulfuros y también en minerales no metalíferos, donde su aplicación no solo permite mejorar la selectividad, sino mejorar la recuperación de los minerales valiosos.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration’s origins can be traced back to 1871. This was when 22 Pennsylvania coal mining engineers founded the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME). The organization’s objective was to “promote the arts and sciences connected with economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those employed in those industries by all lawful means.” Metallurgy and Petroleum were added to the AIME name in 1919 and 1956, respectively. Divisions of AIME were formed throughout the following years in recognition of the increasing trend toward specialization among mineral industry engineers. At the time, SME’s divisions consisted of the Coal Division (1930, now known as the Coal and Energy Division), the Industrial Minerals Division (1935), the Mineral and Metallurgical Processing Division (1948) and the Mining and Exploration Division (1949). The Environmental Division was created in 1997.

The long-awaited COSMAR study prepared under the auspices of the National Academy of Science reaches one emphatic conclusion that has been enthusiastically seconded by the mining industry: The 1977 federal surface mining act is "poorly suited" as a vehicle to regulate noncoal mining. Though the industry greeted the report with approval, the weight it will carry and the extent of its impact are yet to be felt. The COSMAR report makes no recommendations-that's a job left to the Administration's Council on Environmental Quality-and the prospect of legislation still hovers. For a closer look at the study, MINING ENGINEERING talked to COSMAR committee chairman James Boyd, a well-known presence in the mining arena for over 50 years. After highlighting some of the study's major points, Dr. Boyd comments on the report's impact and possible repercussions. Dr. Boyd, for those readers who haven't seen the COSMAR report, would you summarize some of its major findings? The committee analyzed the surface mining act to determine if it was applicable to noncoal mining and found that there were provisions of the act that either could not be met by existing technology or would be extremely difficult and not necessarily beneficial to adapt. We found that most noncoal mineral mines, despite their obvious diversity, can be considered in two major groups: 93% of all mines move 45% of all materials mined (mostly small units mining construction materials); and the few gigantic regional operations (2%)-copper, iron, phosphate, and uranium mines-that move 50% of the material. With few exceptions, neither of the two groups is amenable to the coal mining practices addressed by the act. The strip mine law was designed for coal mining, where land is regraded, revegetated, and returned to usefulness. In contrast, construction mineral quarries supply local needs for decades, remove most of the material from the immediate vicinity, and cannot be returned to their premining uses (though they have innumerable other valuable uses). The nation's huge mineral deposits require enormous capital investments, are vital to the nation's economy, and can take centuries to exploit. Any attempt to return these locations to premining use would be illogical. Pebble phosphate in Florida and red-bed copper in Oklahoma come near to meeting the conditions contemplated in the act. "INTRODUCTION AND RESUME Arizona asbestos mines are the only sources on the American continents of iron-free chrysotile spinning fiber that meets the Navy specifications for asbestos fiber for use in covering electrical cables. Rhodesia normally supplies the bulk of this grade of asbestos at about half the Price of Ari zona spinning fiber. The acute submarine menace in 1942 focused attention on the danger that imports might be cut off and that a sudden demand for greatly expanded production might fall on the Arizona mines to supply the tonnage of this essential material needed for war production.A joint preliminary investigation of Arizona asbestos deposits was made in August 1941 by J. R. Thoenen, senior mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines and A. E. Granger, a geologist of the United States Geological Survey. A more extended investigation of the numerous asbestos mines and prospects, which are scattered over 25 townships of difficult terrain in Gila County, was begun by the senior author in August 1942.The Geological Survey assigned two geologists (Newton Chute and A. F. Shride) a few weeks later to study the geology as an aid in selecting the mines for the Bureau's exploration projects. Six mines were selected for exploratory work because it was desired to prove reserves of ore where production could be started quickly if urgent demand should arise. Acceleration of production is normally slow because of adverse operating conditions. First, the mines are at distances of 35 to 100 miles from Globe, the shipping and supply point, and the roads are few and poor. The mine openings start in steep canyon walls, so that mining supplies usually have to be packed in and the product packed out over 0.5 to 5 miles of burro trail. Second, most of the ore deposits are small, and the ratio of rock broken to spinning fiber recovered is very high, usually exceeding 200."

The sedimentary basins of this region developed in the collision zone of thePacific Ocean plate and the continent. Stresses were transmitted thorough wedge-like lithospheric blocks, such as the Okotsk Sea, East Kamchatka, Aleutian and other smaller blocks. Compression and inversion were more active at the boundaries: ***INSERT EQ*** and ***INSERT EQ*** in places. Tension, rifting and the increase in the rate of sedimentation were marked in P1-2, P3, N12, and also in N2 û Q in places. Structural plan changes of the sedimentary basins and possible oil, gas and fluid migration occurred more actively at the boundaries: ***INSERT EQ***.
