The Macquarie Dictionary defines `information' as: knowledge communicated or received concerning some fact or circumstance; (in communicating theory): a quantitative measure of the contents of a message. For mining companies investing in data capture and information processing technology for operations management is a key issue. Beyond producing performance related information that employees can relate to it is being able to deliver that information into the workplace when it is required, to the employees that can utilise it. To be effective the data needs to be received and understood as `information'. The technology is now available and proven to enable `information' to be delivered into the mining workplace adding value to the activities performed by mine employees. The application of computers and information technology in the mining industry has typically been limited to the resource definition and planning stages, accounting and administration and the process plants that treat the ores and minerals. The mining extraction processes that consume expenditure and determine output in a mining operation occur in an environment dominated by unpredictable events and variable conditions. The mining operation has long been regarded as an inexact science conducted in unpredictable circumstances with many independent variables affecting the output and resultant cost of production. Financial accountants keep track of expenditure and management accountants analyse the cost of production usually on a weekly or monthly basis but all this effort can't affect the outcome, that was determined by the real time events and variations of circumstances over a week ago. Such reporting and analysis can result in conclusions being drawn about what improvements can be made and how you might do better next time, but generally the data is not detailed enough, is inaccurate or misrepresents the real issues. The capital investment required for any mining operation is substantial and comparable to other industries such as manufacturing. The performance and utilisation of manufacturing plants is usually closely monitored down to the lowest level of detail. Many modern plants are controlled and optimised using programmable intelligent devices and monitors display real time performance to the operators and prompt them to make informed decisions to maximise production and minimise wastage. Technology suitable for the mining industry is now widely available and has proven to be a reliable and powerful tool for the optimisation of mining operations. This paper focuses on the latest information technology developed by Modular Mining Systems that has been implemented in mining operations worldwide. The benefits reported by the mining companies utilising real time information technology over the past 15 years have generally related to optimisation of truck fleet allocation and material blending. Some mining operations have reported improvements in equipment utilisation of greater than 20 per cent. With the development of real time graphical display screens in the operators cabins the benefits of information delivery can be harnessed to make employees more effective in the workplace.

Inactive underground mines now provide essential habitat for more than half of North America's 44 bat species, including some of the largest remaining populations. Thousands of abandoned mines have already been closed or are slated for safety closures, and many are destroyed during renewed mining in historic districts. The available evidence suggests that millions of bats have already been lost due to these closures. Bats are primary predators of night-flying insects that cost American farmers and foresters billions of dollars annually, therefore, threats to bat survival are cause for serious concern. Fortunately, mine closure methods exist that protect both bats and humans. Bat Conservation International (BCI) and the USDI-Bureau of Land Management founded the North American Bats and Mines Project to provide national leadership and coordination to minimize the loss of mine-roosting bats. This partnership has involved federal and state mine-land and wildlife managers and the mining industry. BCI has trained hundreds of mine-land and wildlife managers nationwide in mine assessment techniques for bats and bat-compatible closure methods, published technical information on bats and mine-land management, presented papers on bats and mines at national mining and wildlife conferences, and collaborated with numerous federal, state, and private partners to protect some of the most important mine-roosting bat populations. Our new mining industry initiative, Mining for Habitat, is designed to develop bat habitat conservation and enhancement plans for active mining operations. It includes the creation of cost-effective artificial underground bat roosts using surplus mining materials such as old mine-truck tires and culverts buried beneath waste rock.

To develop a rugged catalyst capable of withstanding hydraulic attrition resulting from the oil-circulation process for synthesizing liquid fuels, use of an iron catalyst containing an active coating surrounding an inert solid core of metal was investigated. This massive-iron catalyst in the form of steel shot and lathe turnings was activated by partial oxidation with steam at 600° C, impregnated with alkali, and reduced with hydrogen at 450° 6. The massive-iron catalysts were resistant to oxidation and spalling, and a 6-month catalyst life was attained. Higher operating temperatures could be employed than with fused iron oxide catalysts, resulting in greater gasoline yields. Because the lathe turnings pack with void volumes of 70 to 90 percent, it has become possible to employ a fixed bed without the danger of cementation that occurs with fused iron oxides.

This paper describes a mine truck hauling process called "Truck Jigging" which is currently the subject of a process patent application.The investigation explores the production and cost advantages of using the potential energy available in a descending haul truck to assist in elevating an ascending vehicle. Applications are studied for both strip cut mines and open pit operations. Various mechanical connections between the two vehicles are considered, based on a pulley mounted rope system. Fifteen year operating cost estimates show savings of up to 26.5 percent over conventional mine truck operations.

The first full year of the second World War for the United States presented a picture of the metal-and nonmetal-mining 4 industry which, without proper analysis and explanation, would convey a distorted view of achievements during 1942, especially because employment at gold and silver (lode and placer) mines-the largest group-declined to such an extent that the over-all totals for the country were reduced even though increases were made at mines producing copper, lead-zinc, iron, miscellaneous metals, and non-metals. A complete panorama of the metal-and nonmetal-mining industry, exclusive of coal mining, reveals a decrease in the number of men employed, the man-hours of employment, and the accident-frequency rates. Were the gold and silver (lode and placer) mines to be considered as a separate category; it would be seen that the number of men employed at all the other groups of mines increased appreciably over 1941. These other increases must be considered important, since these mines produced the vital war minerals that made valuable contributions to the military successes of the United States and its Allies during the year. A separate analysis of each of the various groups of mines may be found elsewhere in this bulletin. For the purpose of maintaining continuity in this series of bulletins, however, the discussion in this introduction will be confined to the entire metal-and nonmetal-mining industry (excluding coal mining, for which a separate bulletin, No. 462, has been published).

This Final Report describes the major technical activities that were accomplished to produce a comprehensive continuous miner training system (CMTS) for coal industry utilization. The primary product of this program was a continuous miner part-task trainer. It is composed of an interactive computer graphics system combined with the operating controls of a continuous mining machine mounted in a simulated cab. The cab contains an audio system for reproducing continuous miner operational sounds. The trainer is supplemented with a complete set of cognitive materials that provide instruction in the operation, safety and health of continuous miner operations. A complete summary of the field test and evaluation of the CMTS is provided along with a set of recommendations for further training program refinements, expansions, and utilization.

"This paper provides a critical review of the development and application of advanced controls in mineral processing at the industrial level. These algorithms can be sub-divided into four broad categories: Kalman filter, self-tuning, extended horizon, and knowledge based or expert systems. Applications from each category are described outlining the benefits derived, the relative advantages of that particular controller, and potential limitations of the controller which may inhibit their more widespread application. The paper will conclude with a description of control algorithms which are currently in the rudimentary design stage, but may hold tremendous potential for mineral processing control systems in the next decade. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian mining industry has a large installed milling base and many plants are run with manual or low level automatic process control. The competitive pressures imposed by the market will not allow these operations to ignore the significant increase in efficiency that can be achieved through the effective application of advanced process control. These improvements will come in the form of better quality, higher productivity and reduced costs.There have been quite a number of reports of successful applications of advanced control in mineral processing applications. As this trend continues, and more of the work is documented, the technology will be more effectively transferred to process and control engineers. It is the authors' opinion that the most difficult problems facing process control are not really technical in nature. Rather, they lie more in process control education. This extends from management, through engineering to the operators.The purpose of this paper is to provide a tutorial type overview of some of the more frequently encountered advanced control algorithms. The assumption is that the reader has a superficial knowledge of this technology. In the discussions which follow, several techniques are explored within the framework of simple process examples. Industrial examples are cited for each and an evaluation of the expected longer term potential is given."

This paper describes the implementation of specialized software in mine planning at the Cleveland-Cliffs' managed Empire Mine on Michigan's Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience on the eastern end of the Marquette Range beginning in the early 1960's. The Empire Mine, in its thirty-fifth year of production, uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short and long range planning.

The stabilities of rehabilitated landforms are often threatened by the altered surface hydrology, especially the excessive surface run-off, which may cause severe water erosion and associated pollutant transport to surrounding areas. These effects would lead to pollution in waterways and render the failure of newly established vegetation. An accurate quantitative evaluation of run-off problems are consequently essential for the proper rehabilitation designs which can help minimise these harmful consequences. For this purpose, in this study a novel run-off model, RunCA, was developed based on Cellular Automata (CA), integrating fundamental hydraulic principles. In this model, a series of rectangular cells were employed to cover the study area. Run-off production within each cell was simulated by determining the cell state (water surface elevation) that consists of both cell altitude and water depth. The distribution of water flow among cells was determined by applying CA transition rules based on the improved minimisation-of-difference algorithm and the calculated flow travelling time. RunCA was applied to various aspects in mined land rehabilitation planning, including landform designs for both hill-slopes and tailings dams, revegetation strategies and cover constructions. Simulation results showed that surface run-off increased with slope gradient and more run-off was produced on convex and straight slopes than on concave and S-shape slopes. Both mounds and rip lines constructed on the tailings dam surface could help reduce the water discharge. Vegetation planted in rows were more effective than those in columns or patches in controlling run-off. Increased cover thickness had the potential in reducing run-off rates, and the covers with an increasing thickness from top to bottom of the slope tended to be more efficient than those with a constant thickness. All these results have demonstrated the efficacy of RunCA as a simulation tool in assessing the hydrologic behaviours of different rehabilitation designs. Compared to the traditional hydrologic models, most of which were developed for the catchment scale studies, RunCA has the potential advantages in capturing the dynamic and spatially varied run-off behaviours at different spatial and temporal scales.CITATION:Shao, Q,?Baumgartl, T, Huang, L and Weatherley, D, 2014. This user's manual covers a set of 5 computer codes which were generated during development of a simulation of deep ocean mining operational economics. Table 1.1 provides a summary of these codes, and a more thorough description of each follows, In addition to the descriptions in this user's manual, internal documentation is provided throughout each code, except for the very simple ones, for ease of understanding or possible modification. The two major codes are MINER, which performs the deep ocean mining system operational simulation, and MSWEEP, which calculates the sweep and feed efficiencies for a set of collector paths generated by MINER. The standard operating procedure is to input the system and operating parameters to MINER, which computes a set of collector paths automatically and stores the information in the fife PATH.DAT. MSWEEP subsequently retrieves the collector path data in PATH.DAT, and uses it to calculate sweep and feed efficiency. Separating MINER and MSWEEP allows parmetric execution of MSWEEP without recomputing the collector paths with MINER. PIPEST, RESP, and OBSTCL are special-purpose codes described in more detail in the following documentation.

Froth flotation is applied to mineral sand concentrates in order to produce commercially viable xenotime concentrates. Experiments indicate that a xenotime product containing 38% Y2O3 at 47% recovery or 34% Y2O3 at 83% recovery can be obtained from a 27% Y2O3 feed. The process involves a primary stage of reverse flotation at which oxide and silicate gangue is floated, and secondary stage of direct flotation at which xenotime is floated. Of the various collectors screened an amphoteric compound was found to be effective at both stages. This was made possible by the addition of sodium silicate at the second stage, which acted as depressant for the remainder of the gangue. Similar studies on a low grade feed material were somewhat unsatisfactory as the grade achieved fell short of what was targeted.

In this paper the possibility to complete the copper recovery and to enrich in PVC a mixture of plastic granules obtained by grinding electrical cables are investigated. The recovery of a large part of the copper still present among the plastic granules was possible by means of a mechanical screening, the finer polymeric fraction was collected, at the same time. In order to complete the copper polymer separation the following techniques were employed. Counter current separation in water, static dense medium separation with zinc chloride solution and copper extraction with nitric acid and subsequent electrolytic deposition. A Tri-Flo® dynamic dense medium separator was employed in order to separate the lighter polymeric fraction, from the heavier polymeric fraction, mainly PVC. Water or a salt-water solution was employed to feed the separator device.

In a previous paper, Oelsen, Schuermann, and Hey-nertl pointed out the possibility of obtaining complete thermodynamic functions for alloy systems from calorimetric measurements alone. Specifically, if the heat content of a heterogeneous, multicomponent system is known as a function of temperature and composition, then it is possible to derive the heats, entropies, and free energies of formation of liquid phases and of solid intermediate phases of fixed composition. The authors present equations and graphical techniques applicable to eutectic systems and systems with intermediate phases without solid solubility at lower temperatures. eijering has considered possible extension of the treatment to systems with complete solid-state miscibility at lower temperatures; however, experimental difficulties practically restrict the method to systems with very limited miscibility in the solid state. The purpose of this note is to present an alternative derivation of the heats and entropies of formation of liquid phases and of solid intermediate phases from heat-content measurements alone. Fig. 1 shows three types of phase diagram to which the analysis may be applied. If the heat content is determined as a function of composition x, at temperature T, we have quite generally and the heat of mixing of the liquid is obtained directly from heat-content measurements. As part of an over-all laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing ad other techniques for a more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or a batch of pellets has been developed. Through this test, it has been shown that dry fracture load is directly proportional to bentonite content in batches of pellets, but inversely propor tional to bentonite content in individual pellets of the same batch. This apparent paradox is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that large pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than small pellets. In past attempts to characterize green and dry iron ore pellets, the authors found large variations in the results of strength tests on closely sized pellets from the same batch.' Reasons advanced for such variations in the quality of pellets in which the binder is bentonite were the presence of internal flaws and the nonuniform distribution of the binder. Even when resulting pellet strength is good, there is still the question of whether the same strength could have been attained through a more effective use of a smaller amount of bentonite. The authors' own and other studies 2-3 have pointed out the strong dependence of pellet strength on the degree of "mixedness" of the iron ore concentrate and the bentonite binder. A S far back as 1925, Brazeau Collieries, Limited, became interested in .briquetting. This was brought about by complaints from their principal customer that stack losses, due to a high percentage of fine coal in their mine run, were excessive. The Company considered oil spraying of the fines. This, after some experiments and tests had been made, was ruled out as uneconomical and impracticable. When sufficient oil to be effective was put into the fines, it caused the coal in the tender of stoker-fired engines t0 arch over the screw feeder. The Company ultimately placed their problem in the hands of the Re-search Department of the University of Alberta. Experimental work was carried on by this department over a period of more than a year. The results obtained and the experience gained in this research work were conveyed to Brazeau Collieries in a report dated October 31st, 1929, and in a supplementary report dated February 2nd, 1935. Most of the results obtained in experimenting with Brazeau coal are embodied in a brochure, reprinted from the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Bituminous Coal, Vol. 19-24-28, entitled Principles in the Briquetting of Coking and Non-Coking Bituminous Coals, by E. Stansfield and W. A. Lang. All who are interested in briquetting should read this brochure. In the writer's opinion, iris the most important treatise on the subject printed in recent years. The results given in the paper are, of course, those obtained in laboratory investigation. It was pointed out to the writer that it would be most interesting to have such results correlated with those obtained in commercial practice. In this short paper, an attempt is made to do so.

The area discussed in this report comprises a group of 38 counties lying in the northeast corner of Texas. It covers all, and extends beyond, the borders of what is commonly described as the East Texas Basin. It includes two major oil fields, Van and East Texas; two major gas fields, Bethany and Waskom; and a number of fields, both oil and gas, of lesser importance. All commercial oil production comes from beds of Upper Cretaceous age and almost exclusively from the basal member, the Woodbine sand. Gas is produced from both Upper and Lower Cretaceous beds with the newer production from the older beds. East Texas Field This field continued as in 1932 and 1933 to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the oil business. This paper describes the location and general features of iron occurrences in Colorado. Most of the deposits were examined; many are in forested and mountainous areas at altitudes of 5,000 to 13,700 feet. Iron is known to occur in 30 counties of western Colorado. Transporting the ore to market is a handicapping economic factor involving long truck and railroad hauls; the nearest purchaser of smelting ores is the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., at Pueblo, Colo. When the ore can be sold locally for special purposes and at higher prices than can be obtained at iron smelters, small-scale operations can supply that market.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc Eng (Mining)degree The purpose of this report is to assess the risks faced by mines in dolomitic compartments in particular Kloof 8 shaft. The dolomites of the West Rand comprise one of South Africa?s most natural water resources, and overlie the reefs of the richest gold mines in the world. The pumping of water from the dolomitic aquifers to prevent flooding has caused the natural water table to subside, and the resulting cavities within the dolomite rock formations that overlie many gold deposits sometimes collapse, causing sinkholes. These impacts of the mining industry could worsen over time if preventative measures are not taken. This report discusses these impacts in detail, more specifically the risks to which operations in dolomitic compartments are exposed. A risk analysis was carried out to access the risks that the organization could face and it was this analysis that allowed one to examine the best methods to combat the problems. Other factors such as geological features and seismic events were also considered for the evaluation. To aid with the completion of this work various resources were utilized. A literature study was undertaken, information was gathered from various experts who specialize in dolomitic studies, evaluations were conducted and conclusions reached. The results from the project indicated that preventative measures should be implemented and correct procedures put in place to prevent any disasters.
