Two new railroad bridges in Kansas City, Missouri are founded on drilled shafts embedded into the soil and underlying shale. The uncertainty arising from the non-homogeneous, anisotropic nature of most shales, and the variability of shales across the U.S., makes it a difficult material to assign appropriate design properties. As was the case on this project, the uncertainty of foundation performance in shale can lead to overly conservative designs, particularly with drilled shaft foundations. An extensive Statnamic axial testing program was performed to verify that the load-settlement behavior of the drilled shafts would be acceptable for the intended railroad traffic. Axial Statnamic testing was applied in three increasing cycles of 927 kips, 1007 kips, and 3177 kips, respectively. The maximum movements recorded at the shaft head during each of the loadings were 0.052 inches, 0.062 inches, and 0.257 inches, respectively. The loads applied in each of the respective Statnamic tests were not sufficient to reach the capacity of the shaft; so direct comparison of measured and calculated capacities is not possible. However, evaluation of the estimated design capacity can be accomplished based on results from the Statnamic testing program by utilizing normalized load transfer relations presented by O?Neill and Reese (1999). Such comparisons necessarily require extrapolation of the data measured in the Statnamic tests following typical load-displacement response. Results indicate the Kulhawy and Phoon (1993) method for estimating side resistance in Pleasanton shale rock sockets, assuming a smooth socket, appears to agree well with observed behavior during Statnamic testing. Accordingly, the O?Neill and Reese (1999) method for estimating the toe resistance in intermediate geomaterials, assuming cohesive rock with Rock Quality Designation (RQD) between 70 and 100, appears to agree well with observed behavior during Statnamic testing. Finally, based on Statnamic testing at varying load magnitudes and normalized curves developed by O?Neill and Reese (1999), the contribution of side resistance to the capacity of a deep foundation can be determined assuming no load is transferred to the base of the foundation during lower magnitude testing. Furthermore, higher magnitude testing can provide a means to evaluate the accuracy of design end bearing calculations.

This paper provides estimates of large-scale temperature gradients that can be used to support modeling of natural convection and cold-trap processes in thermally perturbed drifts. Temperature influences estimates of the quantity and chemistry of water contacting engineered components (e.g., drip shields and waste packages) in a potential high-level waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Temperature gradients drive natural convection and cold-trap processes, which could affect the distribution, quantity, and chemistry of liquid-phase water contacting drip shields (waste packages).The confluence of high temperatures, liquid-phase water, and high chloride may lead to corrosion of drip shields and waste packages. An overview of the evolution of environmental conditions in thermally perturbed drifts is presented to provide a context for the estimates of temperature gradients. A mountain-scale conduction-only model is used to estimate temperature gradients and temperature differences for a drift located at the center of a potential repository. Thermohydrologic models and heat transfer algorithms are used to evaluate the reasonableness of the conduction-only results. Estimates of temperature using an in-drift heat transfer algorithm account for the possibility of drift degradation and formation of a rubble pile on the drip shield. Temperature differences between the center and ends of the drift are estimated to rapidly increase to 80 °C soon after repository closure. That temperature difference decreases over time to 15 °C after 10,000 years. Local temperature gradients are generally estimated to be less than 0.2°C/m, though the gradients can be much larger near changes in lithology and near the end of the drift. The estimates of temperature gradients do not account for intermediate- and small-scale variations, such as those influenced by differences in heat loads between waste packages, intra-layer variations in thermal properties of the surrounding fractured rock, or localized drift degradation.

A study was undertaken to evaluate the thermal environment and determine the contributing heat sources within the existing 153 Orebody of Coleman/McCreedy East Mine which would then enable the prediction of the climatic conditions in the mine?s future 170 Orebody. The study entailed continuously monitoring, for a 2-week period, the dry-bulb temperature, humidity and barometric pressure along the existing intake airways from surface down to the 4810 Level and throughout an active mining area on that level. Furthermore, the mining activities and associated equipment that could be responsible for any changes in the temperature and humidity conditions within this mining area were also monitored. These data were then used to develop and validate a climatic simulation of the mine?s mechanized cut and fill mining method. This climatic model was then transposed to the future 5700 Level in the deeper 170 Orebody, to determine the environmental conditions within its production workings and along the main haulage route ascending from that area. Based upon the simulations performed it was shown that the level of ventilation planned for the new orebody should be able to maintain adequate environmental conditions. However, this study did emphasize the importance of the appropriate distribution of airflow in workplaces that used auxiliary ventilation in order to sustain a suitable thermal environment.

A new prototype ionization-attachment fire detector was developed by the Bureau of Mines for detecting combustion-generated submicrometer particulates. It is much more sensitive than the conventional ionization smoke detector, and it has the following added features: 1. A primary charging current of unipolar air ions is generated by a gold-coated, radioactive center electrode of a cylindrical diode. 2. Submicrometer particulates are flowed axially through the unipolar cloud where they acquire charge. The charged particles impinge upon a third electrode, located downstream, resulting in a current which is directly proportional to the particulate concentration. 3. Additional electrodes analyze the particulates in terms of their mobility and thus determine their size distribution. 4. A filter and cyclone assembly protect the ionization chamber against ambient dust. An analysis of conventional ionization smoke detector performance is also presented in terms of source strength, chamber geometry, and applied potential.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of roof bolting machine operators and to prevent additional cases of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) thru the development of engineering noise controls. This paper describes and evaluates an engineering noise control for the roof bolting machine, namely the collapsible drill steel enclosure. The results of the evaluation demonstrated that using the collapsible drill steel enclosure provided a 7 dB(A) reduction in sound pressure level at the operator?s position of a roof bolting machine.

In fact, sulphur is so important that there has been an increasing tendency in recent years to measure industrial growth in terms of sulphur consumption.The uncertainty of obtaining adequate supplies •of elemental sulphur from the Frasch-mined domes. of Texas and Louisiana in the United States led all countries in 1950 to seek alternative sources of supply of this necessary element.Canadian industry has been supplied, for many years, with most of its sulphur requirements by United States Frasch-mined sulphur. World demand for this sulphur has necessitated the imposition of controls on its distribution, as production has not kept pace with demand. Until the third quarter of 1950, Canadian manufacturers of pulp and paper, heavy chemicals, explosives, and textiles •experienced little difficulty in obtaining their needs of elemental sulphur from the United States. However, at that time, low producers' stocks and declining reserves threatened to reduce shipments from producers, with the prospect of a continuing shortage for some time. These conditions, together with higher prices, stimulated the search for alternative sources of supply in Canada."

The current state of the mass transit industry in America will be examined. How and why this important urban activity shifted entirely, or almost entirely, from the private sector to the public sector. Who pays for transit? For day to day operating costs? For capital investment? The prospects for transit's future will be the next major issue addressed. In a word, they are rather good. Over the past decade there have been major new transit investments made in Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Miami, as well as constant re-investment in such cities as New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. While the current administration has put a temporary halt on the initiation of any major new rail transit projects using Federal funds, there are several mechanisms localities have for using other resources for such projects. These will be explored.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level. It is situated in a wide east-west valley. Minera Peñasquito, S.A. de C.V., wholly owned subsidiary of Goldcorp Inc. has operated twin SABC-flotation lines since June 2010. Each line is capable of processing 50,000 tonne per day using a SABC grinding circuit followed by flotation to produce lead and zinc concentrates. The addition of a Polysius Polycom HPGR 2417 with dual 3,000 kW drives to reduce the crushed pebbles produced by the SAG mills was planned to increase production to 65,000 tonne per day per line. The production has been limited to 100,000 tpd due to operating issues in the grinding circuit. The operating issue has been the amount of pebbles generated by the SAG mills is significantly less than originally planned. This paper describes the planned installation of a crushed augmented feed to maximize utilization of the HPGR capacity. This coupled with full utilization of the SAG and Ball Mill available energies there is the potential to achieve a 50% total capacity increase from the grinding circuit.

In a paper presented at the Heavy Minerals Conference 2001 a laboratory scale investigation on the beneficiation of an ilmenite containing waste stream by magnetizing roasting was reported1.This waste stream contained a high concentration of ilmenite, which was contaminated by chromite and other gangue minerals. Interpretation of the results of the investigation was based on the assumption that during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate, under the oxidizing conditions, the magnetic properties of the chromite would remain constant. In this article the following hypothesis was tested: The magnetic susceptibility of chromite would remain constant during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate under the oxidizing conditions reported by Gouws and Van Dyk1. The results of this study indicated that the hypothesis is not true. The increase in the magnetic susceptibility is not significant though and it is expected that it will not influence the final ilmenite quality to a large extent. Based on the assumptions that the bulk magnetic susceptibility of the waste stream samples represents that of the ilmenite in the waste stream, and the bulk magnetic susceptibility of UG1 chromite that of the chromite in the waste stream, the results also served to confirm that the waste stream with a high chromite content should be roasted under oxidizing conditions, in a reactor with a well-defined retention time distribution (i.e. a fluidized bed reactor), at a roasting temperature of 750°C (rather than the higher temperature ranges of 800°C and 850°C).

This study was initiated by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to develop guidelines for determining the maximum economic recovery of resources in coal mines. The work was in response to a requirement in the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 and Federal regulations. The intent was to address the economic rainability of small, irregular reserves in existing longwall mines. In particular, there was a need to determine if room-and-pillar mining using a continuous miner (CM method) was economically sound, or whether unconventional (short or odd-shaped) longwalls could be used to recover small coal reserves economically. Small reserves, called "widgets" are left in longwall mines on one side of the mains, near outcrops and adverse geological conditions, or near any other location where reserve geometry does not lend itself to mining with a rectangular longwall panel. The work included (1) analysis of the geologic, geo-technical, and economic factors that influence the recovery of small coal reserves, (2) analysis of historic changes in supply, demand, and coal prices, (3) development of typical cost models for room-and-pillar and longwall mines, and (4) development of a practical methodology for determining maximum economic recovery. The methodology included an evaluation of the ratio of coal mined during longwall mining to that mined for development (LDR) as well as costs of maintaining coal quality depending on market conditions. Instrumented handles or dynamometers are widely used to measure hand forces and/or the biodynamic response of hand-arm system. To study hand-transmitted vibration exposure, six generations of instrument handles were constructed or initially developed by researchers in ECTB/HELD/NIOSH. This presentation provided a summary of these handles. Their basic characteristics, limitations, and usefulness are described, which may help their appropriate applications and further improvements. Six Designs of Instrumented Handles Handle 1: The conceptual design is recommended in ISO 10819 (1996)1 for glove test. The grip force is measured by detecting bending strains on a measuring beam in the handle. A special handle fixture was designed to connect the handle to a shaker. Except the screws, the handle and fixture were made from aluminum. Handle 2: The design is based on the principle of shear strain measurement.2-3 Both grip and push forces can be measured simultaneously using this handle. This handle was directly designed for a simulated vibrating tool. Handle 3: This design is basically composed of a handle base, a measuring cap, and two charge-based sensors (Kistler 9212) sandwiched between the base and cap. The handle was also made from aluminum. The fixture for Handle 1 was also used with this handle. This generation of handle has three different handle diameters (30, 40, and 50mm).4 Handle 4: This design is an improvement from Handle 3. The handle fixture was totally redesigned and it was much stiffer than the previous one. The aluminum measuring cap was replaced with a magnesium cap. Handle 5: The basic structure of this handle is the same as that for Handle 3. However, the piezoelectric sensors were replaced with two strain gage based sensors (Interface SML-50). Handle 6: This handle includes two measuring caps, four piezoelectric sensors, and a handle centre base. The handle fixture was the same as that with Handle 4. Methods for Handle Examinations The static and dynamic characterizations were performed using the methods reported by Dong et al.5-6 Results and Discussion Handle 1: The static force measurement depended on the hand grip location on the handle. Its natural frequency was less than 200 Hz.5,6 Because the transmissibility of gloves may not vary significantly with the applied grip force, this handle may be acceptable for glove test. However, the force measurements with this handle may not be reliable. Handle 2: The static force measured with this handle was insensitive to the hand acting location. However, when the handle was vibrating, the force signals could be totally distorted. For this reason, it was not used for vibration studies.

A year after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and replaced President Amin with their choice, President Karmal, Afghanistan remained in turmoil. In some respects, the political and economic situation in Afghanistan was no better by the end of 1980 than it was preceding the December 1979 invasion. The Government faced widespread and growing alienation and resistance, virulent factionalism within the ruling party, and an acute shortage of material. The mining sector of the country did not fare better either; the only raw material produced in a significant amount was natural gas, which was exported mainly to the Soviet Union. No statistics on production of other minerals and materials were available by yearend. Most of Afghanistan's gas production was from the Hodja-Gugerdag Field, southeast of Shibarghan. The gas flow from this field had been about 300 million cubic feet per day since 1961. An estimated 230 to 250 million cubic feet per day of Hodja-Gugerdag's production was moved by pipeline across the Amu-Darya River into the Soviet Union. Most of the remainder was transmitted eastward to a 105,000-ton-per-year fertilizer plant and an electric power station built near Mazar-i-Sharif with Soviet assistance. After the Soviet invasion, the second gasfield, Djar-Kuduk, in the Shibarghan area, was brought under production. This field, which will produce about 200 million cubic feet per day, consists of four gas zones in the Jurassic and lower Cretaceous zones between 3,000 and 8.500 feet deep. The gas has a high hydrogen sulfide content, with considerable carbon dioxide, A new treatment plant was built at Djar-Kuduk by Soviet technicians under a turnkey contract at the end of 1980. It is believed that most of the Djar-Kuduk's initial flow will be sent to the Soviet Union.

"IntroductionHaving mined an economic mineral bearing rock which is of insufficient grade to warrant direct smelting, upgrading or beneficiation is required to make it an economically viable ore. The first step in effecting the concentration process is comminution or sequential breaking of the rock to allow liberation and subsequent recovery of the desired mineral particles. Desirably the ore could be broken down to the point where the valuable mineral is completely liberated to maximize the chance of recovering as much of it and in as pure a form as possible. The number of energy intensive stages of breakage required to attain this goal depends on many physical characteristics of the ore such as hardness, friability, toughness, grain size, existing fracture planes and particle shapes.Commonly the distinct stages are primary, secondary and often tertiary crushing and finally grinding. To increase the efficiency of each stage of size reduction, pre-treatment sizing is common.Crusher feed is commonly scalped of large pieces or screened for reduction crushers and classified for secondary grindingcircuits.Although crushing and screening is employed for many different products, this chapter reviews current practice in larger tonnage metalliferous ore treatment plants.Current practice is to use large gyratory or jaw crushers for primary crushing and some sort of gyrating or cone crushers for additional stages of reduction. For autogenous or semiautogenous grinding circuits only the primary crushing stage is necessary, the balance of the work being performed in the grinding stage. For conventional grinding circuits using ball mills or combinations of rod and ball mills, secondary, tertiary and even quaternary crushing stages are normally required.Older type crushers such as stamp mills, double rolls, sledging mills and hammermills are no longer common but are used for small tonnage special processes.Important to efficient crushing are a variety of sizing devices such as grizzlies and vibrating screens. Products at different stages must be stored to give surge capacity and allow controlled feeding rates through mechanical and gravity feeders. These storage piles, bins and feeders as well as crushers and screens are commonly integrated into a total facility by means of conveyor systems. Most often these are endless rubber belts driven by simple or multiple drive mechanisms usually consisting of electric motors and speed reducers."

The twenty-ninth Sir Julius Wernher memorial lecture of the IMM, presented at Tunnelling '97, London, 2-4 September 1997. The tunnelling industry is well prepared to face the challenge from the population explosion in urban areas in the near future. Many well-established yet redundant concepts are still impeding progress, however, including the prediction of excessive surface ground settlements. The correct selection of TBM can minimise these, and ground deformations can be avoided completely if the appropriate techniques are applied. Advanced techniques have been used in the Tokyo Bay Crossing, where the tunnel lining was installed by robots. Other advanced techniques include the use of a sliding slip form to give temporary support to an extruded tunnel lining, the chemical processing of ground by polymers during earth-pressure balanced tunnelling and the use of electronic monitoring and steering devices in TBMs. There will be challenges to tunnelling in urban environments, as open cut techniques will no longer be tolerated. Information on the technology, costs, and the current permitting regulations is of vital operators and to firms considering in important aspect of in situ effectiveness of the current state and federal government importance to in situ leach situ leaching. This study, funded by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, describes: (1) all recent restoration attempts at commercial in situ leach operations, (2) restoration costs reported by the industry, (3) empirical equations that predict the amount of groundwater flushing required to meet the current restoration criteria, and (4) in situ uranium permit requirements for the states of Texas, Wyoming, New Mexico, Utah, Montana, Colorado and South Dakota, and Federal requirements.

The MineTracer System developed by a Liberty Lake Washington company is a broad capability wireless sensor network based on a new breed of technologies known as wireless mesh systems. In this paper, R&D Manager Jim Barrett summarizes the balance of engineering tradeoffs that result in a system that (1) performs well, (2) is survivable against many types of mine accidents, (3) operates for many hours post-accident on battery power, (4) meets stringent MSHA requirements for intrinsic safety, and (5) is economically affordable for the mines.

The Group Equivalent Pile (GEP) approach was proposed by researchers to analyze a laterally loaded pile group. This approach enables engineers to evaluate the behavior of a pile group in single pile analysis software, such as LPILE. A previous study showed that the calculated results using the GEP approach for piles agreed well with field test data. To evaluate the accuracy of the GEP method for analyzing laterally loaded shafts, two case studies with different shaft diameters were performed in this study. The comparisons showed that the calculated results using the GEP method and considering the contribution of the shaft cap if embedded generally agreed with the measured from the full-scale tests.

A detailed analysis of faulting indicatcs that blocks of "greenstone" have been thrust beneath the southern end of the Mt. Isa orebodies.This "greenstone" basement is considered to be a major structural control in the localization of these orebodies.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on exploration carried out by Mining Corporation (Aust.) N.L. from 1956 to 1960 in the area immediately south of Mt. Isa, Queensland. During this period over 20,000 ft of diamond drilling was completed together with costeaning and geochemical exploration.Early in 1959, it became apparent that diamond drill information could not be correlated with the current geological concepts of this area and a detailed geological appraisal became necessary. In all, sixty square miles were mapped at a scale of 1 in. to 500 ft, using enlarged aerial photographs. All drill core was logged and sections re-interpreted.Professor K. C. Dunham of the University of Durham consulted on this project and contributed through valuable discussion. Dr. A. Day of the University of Sydney carried out a gravity survey in February 1960 and Dr. H. Wilshire of the same University undertook microscopic examination of rocks from the area. Certain sections of the area were investigated geochemically by Mr. K. K. Hughes of New Consolidated Gold Fields (Asia) Pty. Within the Ag-Pb-S ternary system, the boundaries of the immiscibility region together with the tie-line distributions were re-established at 925°C by the equilibrium-quenching technique where samples were kept in evacuated and sealed silica capsules. Activities of Pb were measured by the dew-point method along the Ag-Pb binary at 925°C, 1100° and 1200°C. positive deviations were observed and the results were modeled by the Krupkowski formalism. Activities of Ag, Pb, and S, along the ternary miscibility gap were calculated at 925°C by utilizing the boundaries binary thermodynamics, phase equilibria and tie-lines. Activities of PbS within the pseudobinary Ag2S-PbS mattes were also measured by the dew-point technique and the results were again modeled by the Krupkowski formation Where negative deviations were observed.
