En ese sentido, durante la producción de aceros, es opcional el uso de fierros secundarios en la fundición (Scrap). La gran flexibilidad que ofrece el proceso permite producir tan bajo tonelaje sin sacrificar el costo de producción por tonelada de metal. Asimismo, las reparaciones pueden hacerse con gran facilidad, quitando la alimentación, drenando el horno eléctrico y cortando la corriente. Se puede operar el tonelaje deseado en una planta ya instalada con un pequeño descenso en la eficiencia. Por ello, es el método más adecuado en los lugares donde no se dispone de coke, tal es el caso de Chimbote - Perú y en donde se dispone de energía eléctrica barata, y de carbones que requieren procesos caros para su coquificación.

A significant amount of metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from iron ore pellets. To control the quality of pellets and to optimise pellet production, characterisation of both green and fired pellets is required. Optical image analysis (OIA) allows identification of different minerals, binder, remaining fluxes and porosity within pellets.For proper identification of the mineralogy, porosity and texture in pellets a high magnification is required, therefore each individual image covers only a very small portion of the pellet. At the same time the characterisation of pellets requires that the whole pellet is represented as a single object, so the size of the resulting overall image at high magnification can make it difficult to handle. A solution to this problem has been implemented within the CSIRO OIA package Mineral4 by combining images at different levels. Namely, to average out local irregularities, individual frames can be stitched during imaging into larger MosaiX images. Mineral4 further combines these MosaiX images into a single panorama image of the whole pellet.The proposed procedures allow the calculation of mineral and porosity spatial distributions, local gradients and abundance graphs based on the distance from the centre of the pellet. Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013. A rock classification for drilling and boring is presented covering most equipment types and providing an estimation of the key parameters for operation, such as thrust and speed, and of performance such as penetration rate and bit life. Drilling and boring are significant and integral aspects of both the mining and heavy construction industries. Together these constitute over 20% of the G.N.P. Drilling and boring represent the most arduous mechanical processes performed in industry. Their misapplication quickly leads to equipment destruction, hazards, and to major delays. The classification is unified in two ways: 1) for a particular rock class several parameters can be estimated, 2) the classification integrates most excavating activities (i.e. digging, ripping and even blasting), and is derived from ground control. The rock classification provides a job property, based on fundamental and index properties, which yields quick and rough estimates of vital information. However it does not obviate the need for a more thorough analysis, and maintaining field records. BACKGROUND In order to adequately describe a drilling operation the conditions, activity, and equipment must be characterized. Of these the major independent variables are the conditions. Conditions focus on the geologic mass and also consider whether the site is surface or underground. For tunnels in horizontally bedded rock, geologic factors affect the selection and design of the initial supports, including the rock propensity toward parting along bedding and the resulting high potential for rock slabbing during excavation. To evaluate this ground behavior, numerical analyses and results with Mohr-Coulomb, Hoek-Brown, and Ubiquitous Joint constitutive models were used, using the Upper Rouge CSO tunnel in Detroit, Michigan as an example. The different rock models and other geologic considerations are shown to impact the selection of the tunnel initial support and design. This paper emphasizes the appropriate selection of an analytical model based on the site specific geology to achieve an optimum initial support design.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting re-search to determine the influence of mining machine mounted water sprays on airflows and methane concentrations at the face when blowing ventilation systems are used. Tests were conducted in a full-scale ventilation gallery. Airflow speeds and directions were measured at several locations near the face with ultrasonic anemometers. Methane was released from the face and concentrations were measured in the entry at locations above the mining machine using fixed point methanometers. Changes in airflow speed, direction, and methane concentrations were correlated with water spray operations. The test results using different spray arrangements and water pressures showed that operation of the machine-mounted sprayers can improve face ventilation effectiveness by increasing the velocity of airflow moving toward and away from the face. The improved ventilation resulted in reduced methane levels near the face.

Beyer Barometric Condenser The Ingersoll-Rand Co. is now offering to the trade complete steam­condensing plants for all service conditions. This equipment includes the Beyer barometric condenser, for' which the company has secured the patent rights, Imperial duplex and Ingersoll-Rogler straight-line reciprocating dry vacuum pumps and, where required, Cameron simplex and centrifugal pumps. The Beyer barometric condenser is of the counter-current type, in which air and cooling water flow in opposite directions. The steam inlet is at the bottom of the condensing v el, the water inlet above and the air-removal opening at the top. The sheets of cooling water over owing the pool at the inlet point meet the entering steam. The two are brought into intimate contact by conical baffle plates which assist the water to absorb to its full capacity the latent heat of the steam. The non-condensable air liberated in the condensing action rises through the falling water to the removal point at the top, being cooled to practically the temperature of the incoming water. Determining ventilation system model inputs from the field test work has been produced in the working oil shale mine which has been in production since the early 1970s. At this mine room-and-pillar with drill-and-blast methods are used. The mine has a complicated ventilation system to supply fresh air for the eight mining production areas on the radius of about 12 km. The main purpose of the experimental test works was to obtain data for estimation of an optimum cross-section area for a new ventilation shaft. Experimental test works included measurements of air volume and fan pressure using five different modes of intake air through the ventilation shafts system. Measurements of airway friction factors were obtained during the ventilation surveys to determine characteristic friction factors for the intake airway. The results of the measurements will be used for further air flow simulation processes required for design of new additional ventilation shafts in the oil shale mine. Results of the study can be useful in estimation of frictional pressure drop in oil shale mine conditions.CITATION:Sabanov, S, 2017. [New stochastic process models are developed to calculate the probability of various fill levels in section feeders as a function of vehicle interarrival times, payloads and feeder-discharge rates. These models may be utilized to establish the minimum feeder-discharge rate necessary to prevent a feeder, with a particular surge storage capacity, from constraining the section's production rate. In addition, it is shown how the output from these models may also be utilized to calculate the probability of various flow rates at junctions in the conveyor haulage network, enabling one to size gathering belts. The model provides a basis for optimizing, (in economic terms) capacity specifications for feeders and conveyor belts in the materials-handling system by considering tradeoffs in the size of the two types of units.]

This report documents the research efforts that were undertaken to design, install and test noise abatement devices for use on off-highway haul trucks operating in surface mines. The objective of the program was to reduce the environmental noise from haul trucks. The noise reduction devices that were developed utilized existing technology and were tested on a 50-ton haul truck. The efforts emphasized the reduction of noise emitted from the engine compartment which included the use of side shields, sound absorbing material, improved radiator shroud design, and a modulating clutch fan. Noise tests were conducted using modified SAE test procedures for measuring sound levels around a stationary and moving machine, and inside of the operators compartment. Test results showed a maximum of 4 dB(A) reduction measured 16 feet from the truck. Interior cab noise was reduced 6 dB(A) with the windows and vents closed.

This contribution introduces the fundamental concepts of wave propagation and fracture mechanics which form the basis of electronic blasting, i.e. precise initiation timing using electronic detonators. The concept of Lagrange diagrams will be frequently used for the calculation of the delay time between blast-holes in a row and rows of blast-holes. The effect of burden and structural geology will be briefly touched. It is found that the advanced blasting technology based on the use of electronic detonators introduces a change of paradigm. It will be shown that knowledge in wave propagation and fracture mechanics is essential for the successful application of the new blasting technique in industry. In particular, the delay time, the wave speeds in the rock mass, the shape of the wave pulse and the acoustic impedance mismatch have become decisive parameters in advanced blasting. Utilizing the wave speed and wave shapes of detonations, large scale tests Utilizing the wave speed and wave shapes of detonations, large scale tests in various countries (Australia, Chile, etc.) have shown that optimal delay timing requires shorter delay times in conjunction with allowing for a wider drilling pattern and the use of a reduced amount of explosives, i.e. a lower powder factor. This seemingly contradictory arrangement is fully justified by using scientific principles in blasting, and converting blasting from an art to a scientific discipline.

Copper sulphate solutions are produced during the pressure leaching of first-stage leach residue in a typical base metal refinery process. Apart from impurities such as selenium and tellurium, this leach solution also contains other precious metals (Rh, Ru, and it) due to dissolution in the pressure leaching stage. Selenium and tellurium are removed from the leach solution by precipitation with sulphurous acid, since these elements negatively affect electrowinning. This study investigates the feasibility of modifying the Se/Te precipitation process step to achieve significant rhodium precipitation in addition to selenium and tellurium precipitation, in order to reduce the rhodium inventory of the process. Thiourea, S02, formaldehyde, formic acid, and sodium thiosulphate were evaluated to determine which of these reagents would achieve the highest Rh precipitation. Based on these screening tests, SO2 and thiourea were selected to be used as precipitation reagents in optimization tests. During these optimization tests, the operating temperature (80 to 150°C) and the amount of reagent added (80 to 140 per cent excess) were varied to evaluate the effects that these operating conditions have on the precipitation behaviour of Rh as well as Se, Te, Cu, and Ni, and to propose appropriate operating conditions. It was found that thiourea resulted in good Rh and Se precipitation (typically in excess of 90 per cent), but precipitated noticeably more copper and nickel from the solution than when SO2 was used. In addition, thiourea had poor Te removal characteristics. SO2 achieved a maximum of 70 per cent precipitation of the rhodium. Faster kinetics and a larger extent of Te precipitation were, however, observed when using SO2 compared to thiourea.

A mine fire is one of the most challenging safety issues facing a mine operator and can occur at any location underground. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Twentymile Coal Mine, Colorado, conducted in-mine experiments to determine the capability of high-expansion foam for addressing underground fires. The tests were conducted in sloping entries with high-capacity diesel-powered foam generators. The following results were observed: a well-designed, maintained, and properly operated high-expansion foam generator can propagate a foam plug hundreds of feet in steep upward sloping (20 pct) multiple entries against a ventilation pressure; stoppings and partitions designed to contain the foam plug in upward sloping entries must be substantially constructed; and the predicted quantity of foam concentrate can be significantly less than the actual amount used due to foam losses, such as bubble breakage on dry surfaces. This paper describes the production of high-expansion firefighting foam and discusses the in-mine experimental tests and results. THE BUREAU OF MINES is investigating methods for upgrading tar produced by the low-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal. This survey was undertaken to compile information needed for identifying the ether constituents of low-temperature tar. Physical properties are listed for 1,024 aromatic ethers. The compounds include cyclic and noncyclic, polyfunctional and monofunctional ethers with oxygen joined directly to either one or two aromatic rings. Alkyl groups up through butyl are included. The compounds are divided into 37 groups ranging in complexity from alkoxybenzenes to dibenzopyrans. Compounds containing aromatic ether groups are important constituents of the neutral oxygen components of low-temperature tar. For example, at Morgantown, W. Va., the Bureau of Mines has identified and determined the amounts of benzofuran, 2-, 3-, 5-, 6-, and 7 -methylbenzofuran, diphenyl ether, dibenzofuran, 2,3-dimethyldibenzofuran, and two other dimethyl-dibenzofurans in the neutral oil from a low-temperature bituminous coal tar (103, 104).3

"INTRODUCTION The Southern Cross district in Deer Lodge County, Mont., has been chiefly a gold producer. Most of the production has come from gold-bearing hematite-limonite ores. Some of these ores were mined and shipped to smelters for use as flux in smelting copper ores. A magnetite deposit in the Pomeroy property, containing no gold or other economic nonferrous minerals, was mined from 1921 to 1923, the ore being shipped to smelters for flux.The iron-bearing deposits in the Southern Cross area were examined by Bureau of Nines engineers/ on June 28, 1943, and October 14, 1943. As a result, a Bureau exploration project was recommended; it was conducted during 1944. A magnetometer survey was first made of the magnetite-bearing area at and in the vicinity of the Pomeroy property. Exploration by diamond core drilling was then conducted within this area, and in the Southern Cross and Hold Fast properties. The cyanide tailings dump at the Hold Fast mill was sampled by auger drilling.This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau of Mines exploration."

A newly developed chemical conditioning technique, which greatly simplifies the preparation of plating baths for the electrodeposition of titanium diboride (TiB2) coatings, is described in this report. The new plating technique was used to prepare samples of titanium diboride (TiB2) coatings on three types of substrate materials. These samples were then evaluated in both low- and high-speed wear-test programs to determine the wear resistance, microhardness, and adhesion of the coatings. In general, it was found that the wear resistance of the coatings is independent of substrate. Scanning electron micrographs have shown that the coating wear surfaces are very smooth, suggesting slow and continuous removal of the coating during the wear test (that is, adhesive wear). Adhesion between the coating and all substrates was excellent. Microhardness results show that the TiB2 coating is harder than alumina, with a hardness value exceeding 5,000 kg/mm2 measured in one test. The results of the wear tests show that TiB2 coatings have relatively poor wear resistance compared with alumina in low-speed unlubricated sliding environments, but exhibit wear properties comparable with alumina in high-speed unlubricated sliding environments.

Subduction zone magmatism is a direct response to tectonic and chemical processes operating at convergent margins. Changes in the tectonic configuration of plate boundaries in SE Asia during the Cenozoic had consequences for the nature and volume of magma produced. Retreat or advance of the trench hinge has probably been an important process in controlling the presence or absence of magmatism in SE Asian subduction zones. This process also provides a means of replenishing the mantle wedge and counteracting the effects of melt extraction in depleting the wedge. Changes in the nature of recycled material and lithologies of the over-riding plate also have the potential to influence the lavas that are erupted in arcs. Several locations in SE Asia have experienced magmatism bearing the geochemical signature of subduction but are remote from coeval subduction zones. Such magmatism requires an earlier period of mantle enrichment by subduction but may result from localised extension. The distribution of such magmatism may provide information of tectonic value. Some adakitic magmatism occurred in tectonic settings where there is no evidence for subduction of young oceanic crust at the time of magma genesis. Slab melting in such settings is not possible and alternative mechanisms are required to explain the occurrence of, at least some, adakitic lavas.

Biological leaching of low-grade nickel laterite is based on a non-traditional leaching of oxide minerals using heterotrophic micro-organisms. The organisms solubilise metals by excreting organic acids; these acids then form complexes with heavy metals. High salinity of water supplies and soils in the vicinity of nickel laterite ore bodies is a major abiotic stress to fungi and represents a major challenge in the application of bioleaching process in-situ. Salinity exposes fungi cells to Na+ toxicity and osmotic stress. This study examined the salt tolerance development of Aspergillus foetidus based on gradual acclimatization of organism, its salt threshold and the salinity effect on its metabolism. The biological leaching of weathered saprolite ore with the resulting halotolerant organism under saline conditions was assessed.
