Theories of ore genesis. have both practical and philosophical application-practical in that they influence our search for new ore bodies; philosophical in that they provide a test for our theories of petrogenesis-and our ingenuity.For example, the theory of granitization requires an explanation of ore genesis compatible with the general concepts of granitization.Our understanding of some processes of ore formation, such as supergene enrichment, or the formation of residual lateritic iron ores, is so complete as to permit of nq controversy.For other ores, like the oolitic iron ores of England and France, and elsewhere, or the segregations of chromite or ilmenite in basic igneous rocks, the broad principles are generally agreed on; dispute is limited to details of process.But for a wide range of ore deposits there is no such agreement. Completely incompatible hypotheses are advanced to explain' identical facts, and we have difficulty in finding new facts or criteria that will distinguish unambiguously between them.In thinking about such ores, a co:n;venient starting point is provided by Schneiderhohn's (1953) fourfold division of ore deposits:1. The hydraulic turbine blade of the matensitic stainless steel (Cr13%,Ni5%,Mo1%) is a kind of large and curved shape, which is susceptible to deformation in both casting and heat treatment processes. The coupling analysis of heat transfer, phase transformation and stress in heat treatment process of the turbine blade for Three Gorges Project is carried out by using Deform-3D software. Its temperature fields, phase fields and stress fields in heat treatment process are obtained. And its deformation is predicted. In the cooling process of normalizing, the blade exhibits relatively large deformation. Based on the stress analysis and deformation prediction in heat treatment process, an algorithm for the determination of reverse deformation of the blade casting in heat treatment process is presented. And the reverse deformation distribution of blade is obtained.

Unplanned stope panel collapses occur on most near-surface and shallow mines in South Africa. Although these incidents often occur during blasting, they pose a major threat to the safety of underground workers and the economic extraction of orebodies. Most stope panel collapses occur due to excessive panel lengths (resulting in excessive stope spans) that are not designed according to a systematic design procedure or methodology. Instead, panel lengths are often dictated by the equipment in use and by previous experience under similar conditions. Hence, a rock engineering design methodology for the design of stable stope panels between pillars is of vital importance for optimum safety and production in shallow mining operations. Using the proposed design methodology described in this paper, rock mechanics practitioners and mine planners should be able to identify and quantify the critical factors influencing the stability of stope panels. The critical factors should then be used as input to the design of stable stope panels that will provide the necessary safe environment for underground personnel working in stopes. The proposed design methodology is an iterative process, which includes aspects such as rock mass characterization, estimation of rock mass properties, identification of potential failure modes, consideration of appropriate stability analyses and other elements of the rock engineering design process. This process continues after implementation. During monitoring, new data should be included in the database and the design process repeated on a regular basis. Design approaches included in the proposed design methodology include empirical methods such as different rock mass classification methods, analytical methods such as elastic and Voussoir beam analyses, kinematic analyses, probabilistic analyses, and numerical analyses. Over 400,000 tonnes of kaolin, sillimanite, mica, kyanite, feldspar and rutile have been mined from the unique Williamstown orebodies since their discovery in the early 1900's. Numerous companies; both large and small were associated with the early development of these deposits but since the formation of Australian Industrial Minerals in 1947, this company has been the only significant producer. A combination of mining and management problems almost forced closure of the mine in the late 1970's but this was averted by a changed attitude towards mine planning. Mine development is now based on detailed geological and technical investigations, exploration for additional ore reserves is being conducted and laboratory and pilot scale studies are being undertaken to utilise both low grade ores and waste materials. The professional approach to mine and market development will ensure that Williamstown mineral products will continue to be available for many years.

In mineral processing, poor froth-flotation performance translates into both an enormous loss of revenue and an unnecessary waste of the ore reserve. In this context, Bacís Mining Company developed a versatile new, high-performance flotation-cell design that can be incorporated into various flotation circuits. The main feature of this circular cell is that it is comprised of two separate sections, namely, a flotation cell that uses wash water to minimize the entrainment of fine gangue particles into the froth product and an external bubble generator that produces small bubbles of relatively uniform size at a specified aeration-rate. The air/water mixture is blended with the pulp by gentle agitation, so as to enhance particle-bubble aggregate-stability. Comparative metallurgical performance with conventional flotation cells show that the power requirements and operating costs for precious metal flotation are three times lower, while the concentrate grade is 7% higher and the recoveries of precious metals are 5% higher.

Exposure?response relationships between the relative risk of lung cancer and quantitative measures of exposure to asbestos are available from a number of epidemiological studies. Meta-analyses of these relationships have been published by Lash et al. (1997) [Lash, T.L., Crouch, E.A.C., Green, L.C., 1997. A meta-analysis of the relation between cumulative exposure to asbestos and relative risk of lung cancer. Occup. Environ. Med. 54, 254?263] and Hodgson and Darnton (2000) [Hodgson, J.T., Darnton, A., 2000. The quantitative risks of mesothelioma and lung cancer in relation to asbestos exposure. Ann. Occup. Hyg. 44, 565?601]. In this paper, the risks derived in these meta-analyses have been compared. Lash et al., concentrated on process and found that the risk of lung cancer increased as the asbestos is refined by processing. Hodgson and Darnton concentrated on fibre type and found that the risk was highest for exposure to amphibole asbestos (crocidolite and amosite), lowest for chrysotile and intermediate for mixed exposure. Some of the differences between the conclusions from the two meta-analyses are a consequence of the choice of studies included. The range of asbestos types included in the studies in the analysis of Hodgson and Darnton was wider than that in Lash et al., enabling differences between fibre types to be analyzed more readily. There are situations where occupational exposure to chrysotile asbestos has shown no detectable increase in risk of lung cancer. Owing to decreasing high-grade ore reserves, there is a need for better understanding of the jigging process to improve the recovery efficiency of finer, lower grade material. The use of positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) was examined as a technique to study the motion of iron ore particles inside a laboratory batch jig. PEPT is a non-invasive method that can provide three-dimensional kinetic data on a particle in laboratory-scale processing units and has been successfully used to study mills, hydrocyclones, and flotation. Experiments were conducted to determine whether PEPT would be a viable technique to study iron ore jigging and what valuable information could be obtained. The results indicated that detailed information on the stratification rate of a particle could be obtained, with adequate resolution to track the particle?s movement through an individual jig pulse.

Between the early 20th Century and the present, the production of mined copper ore has increased from tens of millions of tonnes per annum to several billion tonnes per annum, an unprecedented increase. Contemporaneously, the average grade of mined copper ore has declined from over 2% to approximately 0.5%. Again, in parallel, the price of copper has increased dramatically to reflect the increasing cost of extracting and beneficiating such large amounts of low-grade ore. Within the period the copper price however exhibited several periods of intense volatility, driven by interrelationships between demand and supply, themselves strongly driven by periodic industry developments in the fields of exploration, ore extraction, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. It is notable that these periods of intense innovation exhibit a strong correlation to preceding periods of price, demand or production volatility. This paper examines key trends in each theme between 1900 and 2018 and draws strong conclusions as to the interrelationship between them. INTRODUCTION The production of copper metal has increased from around half a million tonnes per annum to over fifteen million tonnes per annum over the course of the 20th Century. Contemporaneously, the average grade of copper ore mined has declined from over 2% to approximately 0.5% copper by weight. As a result, the volume of Run-of-Mine (ROM) copper ore required has increased from around ten million tonnes per annum to over a five billion tonnes per annum over the period, an unprecedented increase. The adage is that demand drives supply, that prices rise in times of high demand and/or short supply, and that prices fall when supply catches up with demand. The market sellers in biblical times knew this well; mediaeval market sellers equally. Dutch tulip sellers in the 1600’s experienced both in extremis — much to their dismay — and the great industrialists and early capitalists of the industrial revolution knew this also. Mining recently went through a cycle where investors and producers both believed that the “old” rules did not apply any more and that the industry was in a “supercycle” where prices would continue to rise on the back of increasing demand. However, as the GFC of 2008–2011 showed, this was not to be. Another adage says that we constantly innovate to lower costs of production. Is this true? Do we only innovate to lower cost? Has the true cost of producing copper actually gone down over the century? Or are there other balancing forces at play? Herb Kellogg, in his Centenary address to the American Institute of Mining Engineers (now SME), categorized two types of innovation: ‘Bigger and Better’, and ‘New Process’ (Kellogg, 1970). ‘Bigger and Better’ allows increased production at presumably lower cost; ‘New Process’ supports the same result at presumably the same scale, but at significantly enhanced efficiencies and (therefore) lower cost. It is suggested that both types of innovation are constantly and interchangeably required to achieve the kind of scale-up, at achievable operating and capital cost that the industry has achieved over the period. What can be shown, over this last Century and a bit, is that supply and demand are indeed inextricably linked, price and demand are linked, but so are price and cost of production. And the innovation required to sustain that weaves in between them all, cost-effectively increasing production capacity or lowering the cost of production at the same throughput, and sometimes both.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Thomson Orogen is a large but poorly understood element of Queensland geology. Extensive cover conceals the Thomson Orogen at depth, thus limiting studies to a small number of surface exposures. Previous studies of the northern Thomson Orogen have been restricted to the largest of these exposures in the Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Less extensive exposures, including Mt McLaren in east-central Queensland, are largely overlooked and poorly documented. Fieldwork suggests that Mt McLaren is a west-tilted fault block of Thomson Orogen metasediments that are at least 2200 m thick. The substantial thickness of these sediments (which we have named the Mt McLaren Formation) and the consistent shallow marine facies throughout the block suggest deposition in an actively subsiding basin. Initial dating of detrital zircons places deposition of the Mt McLaren Formation in the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician, allowing correlations with formations of similar composition and age in the nearby Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Both of these areas have a long history of mining and exploration for gold and base metals, suggesting that correlation of basement sequences across these areas could be beneficial for exploration models of the Thomson Orogen as well as for tectonic models of eastern Australia.CITATION:Lee, M, Verdel, C, Welsh, K and Oorloff, A, 2015. The paper reports on a vacation work project conducted at Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft, Anglo Platinum, where there was a need to optimize the transport of personnel to level 15 and below. Approximately 900 men per hour need to travel between the shaft and the start of the current chairlift system. Time studies were used as the major indicator of the extent of the current problem, and it is recommended that a new chairlift system be installed to cover the distance from the vertical shaft station at level 15 to the chairlift decline station on level 15. A capital cost of approximately R10 million is necessary to carry out the proposed recommendation. Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft has the capacity to wind 1070 people per hour, and the current labour complement going to the level 15 shaft station stands at 1570 employees; thus at optimum efficiency the proposed chairlift system could transport the entire shift to the start of the current chairlift system in only 1 hour and 45 minutes. Reducing the distance walked at the start of the shift may also have an impact on productivity.

It has previously been observed that industrial high-titania slags display a compositional invariance, remaining close to stoichio-metric M3O5. The present study focuses on this invariance and the phenomena which may cause it. The invariance was studied using thermochemical calculations and a mechanism is proposed for the observed behaviour. The mechanism suggests that a combination of thermochemical equilibrium and transient slag solidification and melting results in the observed compositional invariance. The proposed mechanism provides new insights and prompts questions about other mechanisms in the smelting process.

Fe-26Si-9B (wt per cent) alloy has been identified as a potential high-temperature phase change material (PCM) due to its attractive properties, such as its high latent heat of fusion and low volumetric change during solid/liquid transition. For the successful utilisation of this alloy into thermal energy storage (TES) systems, the development of a cost-effective production method is essential. Presently, the Fe-26Si-9B alloy is produced by mixing FeSi alloys with either pure boron element or FeB alloys. However, the use of pure boron is financially prohibitive, and the carbothermic reduction results in high greenhouse gas emissions and high energy consumption in the production of FeB alloys. In this regard, our study proposes a silicothermic reduction method to produce Fe-26Si-9B PCM by using FeSi alloys and B2O3-based oxides. Accordingly, the influence of various parameters on the production process was investigated, including operating temperature, holding time, B2O3 content in the added oxides, and initial Slag/Metal (S/M) ratio. Based on the experimental results, the optimal parameters for producing FeSiB alloys with over 9 wt per cent boron were determined. Consequently, it was documented that the FeSi alloys and the added oxides enriched with 50– 65 wt per cent B2O3 should be subjected to temperatures ranging from 1550–1650°C, maintain an initial S/M ratio exceeding 1, and ensure a holding duration beyond 1 hr. Moreover, the energy consumption of this process was estimated to be ~1.86 MWh/t metal and the mass loss was lower than 7 per cent. Therefore, silicothermic reduction offers a sustainable approach for producing FeSiB alloys with a boron content above 9 wt per cent.

Patterns of species colonization, biochemical interaction among species, and competitive phenomena were studied in four reclaimed areas in western North Dakota ranging in age from one to four years after mining, along with a site from a native mixed grass prairie for comparison. Early successional changes in floristic composition and soil chemistry were quantified. The mined sites had been contoured, topsoiled, fertilized and seeded. Despite seeding of agronomic species, initial colonization was by fugitive species; analysis of the seed bank in topsoil showed that the most dominant colonizers immigrate after topsoiling. Of the 95 species encountered, Kuchia scoparia was the most dominant in the first two years following mining. Kochlo had relatively low densities in the first year (50-80 plants m-2), but was robust and attained heights of 88 cm with a biomass of about 400 g m-2 In the second year, the plant densities increased to over 10,000 plants m"2 but the height and biomass were reduced to 15 cm and 90 g m-2. However, during the third and fourth years Kochia density declined and was practically non-existent by the fourth year, while the planted Agropyron grasses had concomitantly increased. Other pioneers like Amaran thus retroflexus, Chenopodlum album, Helianthus annuus, Salsola spp. And Setaria spp. showed a less abrupt but similar decline. Chemical analysis of the soils over the same time period showed decreases in electrical conductivity (E.C.), and in the concentrations of P, Ca, Mg, Na, Li, Sr, and SO4 (due to leaching), while N increased. Field studies were conducted on the competitive relations between the dominant species - Kochia scoparia and Agropyron spp. - during early succession. It was found the Kochia acted as a "nurse" crop for several months during the first year of Agropyron spp. establishment, but then began to shade heavily by late July, thus reducing grass tillering. Field and growth chamber experiments on the intraspecific competition relations of Kochia demonstrated that its density and dry matter production, per plant and per unit area, conformed to several laws of plant population biology. Autotoxicity or the depression in growth of a species by its own degradation compounds, in Kochia, appears to be the main factor causing the decline in its growth. Results from a field experiment indicated that thinning dense second year Kochia stands to the density of first year stands did not alter the growth of Kochia, providing strong evidence for autotoxicity. Similarly, several growth chamber experiments demonstrated that small amounts of decaying Kochia leaves and especially roots were toxic to Kochia growth, but not Melilotus officinalis or Agropyron canlnum, Chemical analysis of the soils and plant tissues indicated nutritional im¬balances as shown by P/Mn and P/Zn ratios may be responsible for autotoxicity. In addition to Kochia, a bioassay experiment showed allelochemics to be important in several other colonizing species. Although our results indicate that later stage species generally have greater toxicities than first year colonizers, autotoxicity in the very initial stages seems to be accentuated by harsh habitat conditions. Several practices (mowing. fire, etc.) are used to manage grasslands. Mowing of the first year erect, annual, colonizing vegetation was shown to be beneficial in the growth and establishment of wheatgrasses after mining in western North Dakota. Plots containing Kochio predominantly were mowed in mid-and late-July, and in mid-August, during the first year of growth after recontouring, replacing topsoil. seeding and fertilizing. It was found the Kochia densities were reduced to two percent of the control and its biomass reduced to less than one-third when the area was mowed in mid-August. On the other hand, wheatgrasses showed increases of 23% in stem density and 860% in biomass production over the controls when mowed in mid-August. The mowing of Kochia just before seed-set apparently reduces interspecific competition between Kochia and Agropyron spp. during the following growing season. The method is highly recommended for use in hastening the establishment of planted grasses.

This study explores two evolving 3D surveying technologies, photogrammetry and laser scanning, and applies them to deformation monitoring of rock faces and mine highwalls. A quantitative analysis focused on 3D coordinate determination is performed. Furthermore, a qualitative assessment directed at the practicality and viability of each system operating near a rock face or in a mining operation is undertaken to reveal one systemÆs deficiencies over the other. Two photogrammetric and four laser scanning surveys aimed at optimising accuracy and precision within a short period of data acquisition are conducted on the rock face at Organ Pipes National Park, Keilor, Victoria. The accuracy and repeatability of each survey is determined using a combination of iWitness photogrammetric, and Cyclone laser scanning software. The 3D coordinates of targets placed on the rock face are determined by triangulation and resection principles within a bundle adjustment. The coordinates determined by each system are then compared in a 3D transformation. Controlled deformation conditions are established to determine the precision to which each system can detect movement in the rock face. An object of known dimensions is placed on the rock face to simulate deformation. The relative orientation of images taken for the pre- and post-deformation photogrammetric surveys provide an overall 3D point accuracy of 1.255 mm and 1.804 mm respectively. A 3D transformation shows discrepancies of less than ¦22 mm (RMS) between the geometry of the photogrammetric and laser scanning models. Both systems are able to detect the simulated deformation to a precision of 50 mm. This work also identifies how to obtain millimetre accuracy for 3D coordinate determination of rock faces, thereby providing a quality data set for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists. Photogrammetry is shown to be a mobile, time and cost-effective technique that is more amenable to mining operations than terrestrial laser scanning. However, both systems demonstrate that they are capable of detecting movements that may lead to failures in the rock face, and possibly endangering human life. The implications are significant for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists working in mining operations where enhanced safety conditions, increased productivity and lower operational costs are important considerations.

The Sutong Bridge across the lower Yangtze River in China will have, when completed, the longest span (1,088 m) and the highest towers (306 m) of any cable stayed span in the world. The foundations for this record setting span will also be record setting. They are located in water depths exceeding 30 m with maximum flows exceeding 3 m/sec. The soil at the site of the main pylons consists of layers of silty sands and silty clays extending to bed rock at 270 m below river elevation. This paper describes the innovative methods used by the team of foundation designers and constructors to support this record setting bridge at this very challenging site. This paper covers three specific topics related to the foundations of the Sutong Bridge: ? Design and construction of the 131 drilled shafts (2.8/2.5 m diameter and 114/117 m long) under each of the two main pylons, including the post-grouting of all drilled shaft tips. ? Design and construction of the scour protection for the two main pylons. ? Construction methods used to construct the waterline pile caps (113.8 m by 48.1 m by 13.3 m deep) under each pylon.

A senior design project is required by all accredited mining engineering degree programs. Often referred to as the capstone of a student’s education, this project is expected to include all the important components of the preliminary economic assessment of a mineral prospect, including orebody modeling, grade and reserve estimation, selection of mining and processing methods, preliminary mine design, access and utilities, environmental compliance and reclamation, and financial analysis. Two of the authors (Campbell and Holdsworth) completed a senior project in 2021. They analyzed the Akie zinc deposit located in Canada. This paper summarizes the economic analysis portion of that project. The two primary objectives of this economic analysis were risk reduction and integration of economics and engineering. Addressing risk is important as risk is one of the primary concerns in mining investments. Risk reduction was the primary concern through the entirety of this economic analysis. Integration of financial analysis and engineering design was the first component of a risk reduction design. This allowed for financial and engineering design to be optimized in conjunction with one another. This produced benefits from both a financial and an engineering prospective. From a market, economic, and financial risk perspective, risk was reduced by forecasting multiple metal price scenarios, and then addressing the Akie project’s economic viability at each price point. Lastly, risk was address through consideration of nontraditional financing options. The project also sought to minimize financial and human capital risk, by proposing mutually beneficial cooperative social relationships and favorable work, schedules. Description of that work is not included in this paper.

THE Australian States and New Zealand have for many years provided instruction in mining, metallurgy, geology, and their allied subjects through their Universities and Schools of Mines. Though such education has been provided at considerable expenditure, there is no legal recognition whatever given to the holders of degrees, diplomas, or certificates granted by the authorities controlling these educational institutions. Certain of the, Australian States and New Zealand require, however, that mine managers and other officials employed by the mining industry shall 'hold' certificates granted by their respective Mines Departments.The position at present is that each educational institution is practically a law unto itself, and therefore in many ways there is a want of uniformity amongst institutions all aiming at the same result the training of mining men. The object of this paper is, in the first place, to point out certain aspects of this want of uniformity, and thereby how disabilities accrue. A chlorination pilot plant having capacity to produce 5?10 kg/hr of titanium tetrachloride is in operation at the chlorination facility in Mintek. The bubbling fluid bed chlorination plant can be operated in batch and/or continuous process to study the chlorination kinetics of various feedstocks. The chlorination of titaniferrous ores to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) was carried out during the commissioning of the pilot plant and also as part of the titanium programme carried out at Mintek. TiCl4 is a basic raw material for producing commercial titanium dioxide pigment and titanium metal. This paper discusses the challenges faced during the commissioning and operation of the chlorination pilot plant. It also discusses the effect on the auxiliary facilities and instrumentation as a result of the harsh operating conditions of +1000°C and use of corrosive gases like chlorine and titanium tetrachloride. It discusses the effect of physico-chemical properties of the titanium tetrachloride and iron chlorides. The effect on the chlorinator refractory lining due to heating and cooling of the chlorinator is also discussed. Besides the special provisions made during the design of the chlorinator, this paper also discusses the operational experience and possible solutions to be implemented in future.
