High groundwater levels combined with variable soil and rock profiles present challenges to the design and construction of deep excavation support systems. Increasingly, secant piling techniques are the preferred technical solution for shoring in these cases. Recent developments in drilling equipment, tooling and procedures allow cost-effective construction of deep, overlapped pile systems to tight tolerances in extremely difficult ground conditions. This paper summarizes critical design considerations for secant pile shoring systems, detailing recent advances in installation procedures and verification techniques that allow secant piles to be used for an expanding range of project conditions. Technically- and commercially-viable secant pile shoring designs require that stringent drilling tolerances be achieved in order to successfully provide combined structural support and groundwater cutoff systems, particularly for unreinforced circular secant pile shafts acting in ring compression. Modern drill rigs and tooling can advance fully cased shafts in geotechnical conditions which range from cohesionless soils below the groundwater table to hard rock, within a single drillhole. Down-hole instrumentation provides verification that tolerance requirements are met and allow secant pile shoring to be used at sites previously considered unacceptably risky. In California, secant pile shoring systems are being used for excavation depths of over 100 ft (30 m) on projects with challenging site conditions. Two case studies are presented detailing severe geotechnical conditions and excavation depths which represent the regional state of practice in secant piled excavation support. These projects provide real world examples of the design, construction and construction verification techniques that permit secant pile shoring to be used in more demanding geotechnical conditions and to greater depths than ever before.

A new concept of roof support by "sonic pin-setting" is introduced. Initial experiments indicate that this method could introduce tremendous benefits for the coal mining industry by making roof-bolting a faster, safer, and more economical operation. A theoretical model is presented for describing the process and an experimental machine was built. The present testing results are included.

El presente texto señala los resultados de la caracterización mineralógica de 28 muestras con importante contenido en sulfosales de plomo y cobre de origen hidrotermal provenientes de la Sierra Central del Perú. El principal objetivo fue caracterizar la mineralogía de la zona con énfasis en las sulfosales y el aporte de plata que éstas podían contener. Así, las sulfosales identificadas por microscopia óptica en conjunto con microscopia electrónica de barrido son: tetraedrita, tennantita, boulangerita, bournonita, fizélyita, jamesonita, semseyita, zinkenita; entre otros. Para determinar qué minerales aportaban plata y en qué porcentaje, se realizaron estudios puntuales por microscopia electrónica. Así también se verificó que la plata se aprecia en pequeñas cantidades en sulfosales de plomo, mientras que éstas aparecen en mayor abundancia con respecto a las sulfosales de plata y de cobre.

This report presents a mathematical model for the propagation of UHF radio waves in the large cross-section tunnels of a room and pillar limestone mine, and describes the analysis of a small amount of propagation data obtained in a limestone mine. The model and analysis is based on the waveguide mode theory developed earlier for the transmission of UHF waves in coal mine tunnels, with allowance for propagation losses due to refraction into the tunnel walls, to scattering by wall roughness, and to long range random tilt of the walls. Propagation around corners and through pillars is also examined based on a ray theory approach, together with the beneficial effects of placing reflectors at intersections to significantly reduce corner losses. The theory is found to be in fair agreement with the data; however, additional in-mine measurements are needed to provide a more conclusive test of the model.

From the perspective of metallurgical processing, gold ores can be classified into freemilling and refractory ores. Their extractive metallurgy is largely driven by mineralogical factors such as gold particle size, association with other minerals, coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of refractory gold minerals, and invisible gold in sulphide and sulpharsenide minerals. Gold process mineralogy helps address issues and problems related to gold ore processing. It is widely used as a predictive and trouble-shooting tool in gold ore processing, and provides useful information on process selection, flowsheet development, recovery improvement, and reagent consumption optimization. By combining classic mineralogical techniques, modern instrumental analysis, and diagnostic metallurgy, the mineralogist is able to balance the various types of gold occurrence in an ore.

This study concerns itself with two topics of the mine ventilation - mine fire interface which, when the work for this study began, did not seem to receive sufficient attention. Section 1: Comments on Spontaneous Combustion of Coal in Mines It is attempted to describe heat generation, heat and oxygen transport, in such a way that existing experimental data for U.S. coals can be used to assess conditions inducive to spontaneous heatings quantitatively. Investigated are, in particular, critical air velocities, minimum sizes of coal accumulations, moisture contents and the influence of mining factors. An extensive, practice oriented literature survey is included. Section 2: The Early Detection of Mine Fires by Assessment. of Mine Gases The suitability of the major constituents of combustion products for an early detection of fires is discussed. The same is done for gas concentration ratios. Since it was felt (at least at the time when this report section was written) that the value of the carbon monoxide/oxygen deficiency ratio was overestimated, the usefulness of monitoring this ratio as compared to monitoring CO concentrations was critically investigated. The state of art concerning instrumentation and organization of fire detection systems is reviewed also.

Worldwide TiO2is extracted from natural ilmenite, rutile, and anatase minerals via the sulphateand chloride processes. The sulphate process generates large volumes of less toxic wastes, whereas the chloride process, including the ilmenite-chloride process of DuPont, yields much lower volume of wastes, which are highly toxic and hazardous. The treatment and disposal of such hazardous chloride wastes is both expensive and difficult in terms of long-term monitoring. Besides the waste management and disposal, there is also a shortage of high-grade titanium dioxide minerals in nature, which consequently yields much larger tonnages of sulphate and chloride wastes. In the present investigation we report the results of an alternative titaniferous mineral beneficiation process based on soda ash roasting of minerals. Compared to the conventional processes for beneficiation of TiO2- ores, the alkali roasting of titaniferous offers several advantages including the zero process wastes. In the soda ash roasting process, the mineral is mixed with sodium carbonate and heated above 1023 K in air. The oxidative roasting of ores yields several complex alkali compounds, some of which produce a liquid mixture above 1123 K. In this paper, we have attempted to characterize the composition and physical chemistry of alkali-rich liquid phase. The phase equilibria in the Ti-(M:Fe)-Na-O system are evaluated and compared with the phases formed as a result of roasting reaction. The experimental results revealed that the composition of complex alkali liquid at the reaction interface plays an important role in determining the transport of O2-ions and decomposition of ilmenite. The roles of the crystal structure of mineral phases and their energetics are also emphasized in controlling their decomposition during alkali roasting. The presence of molten alkali in controlling the partitioning of water-soluble alkali salts and insoluble sodium titanate is also explained. The Mining Division of Iscor, an integrated minerals and metals company, has recently completed a feasibility study for the establishment of a new heavy minerals mine and smelter in the Richards Bay area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mine will produce a heavy mineral concentrate containing ilmenite, zircon, rutile and leucoxene which will be beneficiated at a central processing complex close to Empangeni. The ilmenite will be smelted to produce high-grade titania slag and pig iron for export. The ancient dune containing the mineral deposit is located some distance inland of the coastal dunes, and the sands contain a high proportion of extremely fine material which must be extracted ahead of the gravity separation process. Of the 56 million tonnes to be mined annually over the ten-year life of the mine approximately 23,4%?a total of 13,1 million tonnes of minus 45 micron residue fines?will have to be disposed of in a containment facility. The origin of the fine material is from the weathering of amphibole minerals. The remaining coarse sands will be returned to the mined area to re-create the original dune configuration. A number of options for the disposal of the residue fines have been examined and specialised laboratory tests undertaken to determine the deposition behaviour of the fines. The final solution involved the use of a ?sub-aerial? technique for deposition of fine material in a disposal facility. The resulting arrangement will adequately meet technical and environmental criteria. Upon closure after 10 years of operation, the surface of the disposal facility will be returned to sugar cane cultivation The paper refers to the various options considered and describes the problems associated with competent disposal of the residue fines and the development details of the final disposal facility.

Study on Basic Theory of the Grain Settlement in Fluidised Bed This paper takes thick goal grains (less than 1.5 cm) as research object. According to different densities and particle sizes, thick goal grains are divided into 20 kinds of narrow density and narrow size level average grains. Free settling and hindered settling tests are respectively carried out in ?100 fluidised bed thick goal separators. Hindered settlement includes hindered settling velocity test and measurements of suspension density. Results show follows. (1) Fluid state in separator belongs to transition region. Alien's law is the appropriate formula of thick coal particles free settlement terminal velocity. (2) The main factors affecting hindered settling velocity are the number of solid particles in medium and the structure feature of the particle group. The bigger volume fractions of solids ? is, the smaller decreasing velocity coefficient of particle hindered settlement ¯ becomes. In the organism from bottom to top, density of suspended particles in fluidised bed gradually decreases, but near the top of the suspended particles, the density increased slightly. With increase of density and size, suspension density reducing extent increases from bottom to top of separators.

There has been a veritable increase in the adoption of electronic detonators in the last few years. Electronic detonators offer several distinctive features over electric and non-el (shock tube) detonators including better timing accuracy resulting in excellent fragmentation and vibration control, certainly key mining parameters. The field programmability also helps in reducing the on-site magazine storage of detonators with diverse fixed delays. A typical electronic detonator may consist of a logic core, a communication interface, storage capacitor(s) and the ignition element. Being electronic components, the electronic detonators may be susceptible to RF or electromagnetic interference (EMI). RF sources are virtually everywhere: cellular phones/towers, radio transmission, microwaves, walkie-talkies, high voltage (HV) transmission cables and wireless networks with their characteristic frequency emissions. Safety issues prevail; e.g., whether the RF interference can cause premature or inadvertent firing whether directly or indirectly. From a reliability perspective, the RF interference may also impact on bus communications, e.g., during the logging, verifying, charging and firing phases. The deleterious communications disturbance may result in a misfire (non-firing of one or more of the detonators) which is terribly inconvenient for the mine operators and even pose a safety hazard.

This contribution examines the effect of feedstock sampling before the sorting stage of polyethylene terephtalate (PET) bottle recycling. Batches of waste PET bottles may contain non-PET bottles which need to be removed by sorting. Any residual presence of PVC is detrimental for the quality of products manufactured from recycled PET. The maximum tolerated concentration of PVC in cleaned PET is extremely low, which places high demands on the recovery of PVC achieved by sorting. To be confident of attaining the desired PET quality after sorting, acceptance sampling of truckloads of PET bottles may take place prior to sorting. It is shown that accounting for sampling uncertainty requires that the sorting process achieves a consistently high recovery of PVC bottles.CITATION:Glass, H J and Dominy, S C, 2017. "INTRODUCTION The Denver region coal field, covering an area of approximately 7,640 square miles, extends from the Wyoming State line to the middle of El Paso County, Colo. The coal in this region is subbituminous in rank. Much of it is used as domestic fuel. During the last decade the production of coal in this field has remained fairly constant at an average of 2,600,000 tons per year. This production has come from 50 to 60 mines, 88 to 90 percent of the production being from the section of the field north of Denver.According to the Standard Specifications for Classification of Coal by Bank of the American Society for Testing Materials 4/ the coals in this region are classified in the Subbituminous B and C group. On the as—mined basis, they contain about 22 percent moisture and average 9,600 B.t.u. per pound. They are noncoking and slack to a variable extent when exposed to the weather. This is characteristic of subbituminous coals."

Anglo Platinum has initiated a project to investigate hydraulic hoisting technology for platinum mines. Hydraulic hoisting systems are categorized as pumping, fluidizing feeder or displacement feeder systems. Positive displacement piston diaphragm pumps are most suitable for pumping systems but they require that the ore be milled prior to pumping. Fluidizing feeders are unsuitable for platinum ore applications due to the large percentage of fines in the ore. The three-chamber pipe displacement feeder has been most widely used for hydraulic hoisting and is the most suitable technology for platinum mines. Eight hydraulic hoisting applications covering pumping and displacement feeder technologies are reviewed. The key factors to be assessed in selecting a hydraulic hoisting system for a platinum mine are discussed. A typical platinum mine configuration will comprise an ore preparation plant (to produce -15mm material through screening or crushing), motive water pump on surface, high pressure water pipeline from surface to underground, ore slurrification plant, three-chamber displacement feeder, and a high pressure slurry pipeline to surface. The water and slurry pipelines are housed in a purpose drilled borehole. A hydraulic hoisting system selection chart is presented. A 150mm diameter system with a 25 MPa pressure rating is required to hoist 60 000 t/m from a depth of 1 200 m. Generic capital and operating costs are presented. A major potential advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the fines, which contain a high percentage of PGMs, are captured underground and transported directly to the concentrator. Hydraulic hoisting technology is ideally suited to providing supplementary hoisting capacity to existing shafts that have reached the skip hoisting capacity limit. The main advantage for new shafts is the potential to significantly simplify underground rock handling and transportation. All hydraulic hoisting system components are proven. The only risk area is the wear rates of the valves and piping. Current estimates are based on gold ore. The business cases investigated show that the financial viability of the installations are not sensitive to wear rate. Solid state galvanic cell with CaF2 as the electrolyte was employed for determining the thermodynamic properties of Nb-Al binary alloys in the temperature range of 973-1073 K. The activities and activity coefficients of Al in NbAl3 were determined. The experimental procedure and the design and construction of the experimental setup have been also explained in detail. Aluminum activity in NbAl3 increased with increase in temperature and shows a strong negative deviation from ideality. The activities of aluminum in NbAl3 were determined to be 0.0165 and 0.0289 at 973 and 1073 K respectively. The stability of NbAl3 has been compared with other available intermetallic systems.

Enhancing the understanding of gravity flow in caving operations is a key factor in the design, operation and success of caving methods. Consequently, much research has been performed to increase knowledge about gravity flow. Many valuable theories have been gained from different research approaches, which include physical modelling, numerical modelling and a limited number of full-scale tests. Recent advances in technology have allowed Codelco Chile to carry out trials using Smart Markers technology. This technology was used in Esmeralda mine’s Block-2 at El Teniente mine from August 2012 to January 2015. This paper aims to determine the characteristics of the extraction zone and obtain the data that will allow greater understanding of gravity flow for design and draw control purposes.The collected data from recovered markers were analysed using a linear interpolation of both the initial position of the markers and drawbell accumulated drawn tonnage. For each drawpoint in the trial, the regularity or irregularity of flow was analysed based on the recovered markers and the drawn tonnage. Correspondingly, the relationship between flow characteristics and observed fragmentation in drawpoints was analysed. The gravity flow of the Smart Markers revealed that current drawpoint spacing provides the interaction conditions of adjacent flow zones. However, it is possible to increase the drawpoint spacing while allowing caved rock to be extracted from the major and minor apexes.The results of this research also verified that full-scale test data are the predominant factor in the production level design and production control at El Teniente mine.CITATION:Garcés, D, Viera, E, Castro, R and Meléndez, M, 2016. "Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2Si05) and are used in the ceramic industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. ""Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite 2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs where strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags is desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals.""At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite has given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain ware.""3/The possible economic value of the sillimanite schist in the piedmont Plateau was first recognized by Dr. L. L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, who published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, August 1943, on an occurrence of sillimanite schist in South Carolina.The Bureau of Mines was interested in developing a large source of sillimanite to relieve the shortage of high-grade refractories, and initiated a project to locate the ore-bearing areas in Georgia and South Carolina and to develop the most favorable ones.Two hundred and seventy-eight outcrops of sillimanite-bearing schists were found by a Bureau of Mines engineer.4/ The schist occurs irregularly throughout a belt extending from Talbot County, Georgia; to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, about 220•miIes long and approximately 15 miles in maximum width. The Bureau drilled four areas of the more coarsely crystallized schist in Georgia and South Carolina:In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon; chief; conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work; and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch;.R. G. The use of belt air in underground coal mines has been a continuous discussion since it was first introduced in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (Coal Act) of 1969. Although the Coal Act prohibits the use of belt air to ventilate active workings, there were two exceptions prior to the 2004 Final Rule. There have been several major studies/rule-proposals by MSHA since 1985 and the most recent of which is the Technical Study Panel (TSP) established by the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006 to study the use of belt air and related issues. This paper reviews the history of belt air use, its associated controver-sies, and more specifically, the 20 recommendations unanimously approved by the TSP.

The Kempfield deposit is located in the Hill End Trough, one of several intracratonic basins developed during Silurian–Devonian time, in the eastern province of the Lachlan Orogen, Eastern Australia.The deposit contains an oxide resource of 5.8 Mt @ 58 g/t Ag and a sulfide resource of 14.4 Mt @ 45 g/t Ag, 1.7 per cent Zn and 0.6 per cent Pb, classified and reported in compliance with the JORC Code. The deposit has been previously explored by a number of companies, including INCO, Shell, Jones Mining, Golden Cross Resources and recently Argent Minerals Ltd (Argent). Argent is currently completing a definitive feasibility study with a view to mining the deposit.The deposit is hosted at the boundary between the Molong High to the west, comprising Ordovician sediments and volcanic rocks and the Hill End Trough to the east, interpreted as a back-arc basin containing Silurian sediments and siliceous-feldspathic volcanic rocks. The boundary between these two strato tectonic units is an imbricate thrust fault zone known as the Copperhannia Thrust.The Kempfield deposit is hosted in felsic volcanic rocks known as the Kangaloolah Volcanics. These have been in-faulted and folded into the Middle Ordovician meta-sediments of the Coombing Formation of metasediments along the Copperhannia Thrust. The Kangaloolah Volcanics belong to the Late Silurian Mumbil Group, comprising submarine carbonate-shale facies interspersed with extensive felsic volcanic piles, which grade conformably upwards into turbiditic sandstone and siltstone sequences (interpreted to represent a deeper depositional environment). These turbiditic rocks are known as the Campbells Formation, comprising siltstone, sandstone and andesitic tuff. The rocks at Kempfield are metamorphosed to lower greenschist facies, reflected through the different type of schists.Silver, gold, lead, zinc mineralisation is hosted in barite-rich horizons, near the boundary to quartz-phyric tuffaceous rocks in submarine, immature, reworked felsic ash tuffs. Barite appears to be hosted in greatest concentrations by the coarser grained volcanoclastic sandstones and grits, whilst intercalated siltstones are volumetrically minor and tend to return low barite and silver. Mineralisation is hosted in stratiform and probably stratabound barite-rich horizons. A northeast-trending, steeply dipping, metamorphic cleavage (S1) occurs throughout the project area.

The industrial coal processing trend toward greater fines production, due to mining techniques and customer requirements for reduced ash and sulphur content in the fine coal product, is the basis for ongoing efforts to improve the performance of the flotation machine. WCO has successfully adapted the principles of the beds Column to a full size machine prototype. Recent plant evaluation tests confirmed the initial promise of this concept by achieving a considerably lower ash product while maintaining the combustible recovery level of conventional flotation machinery. The paper will include a review of the fundamental principles of the beds Column concept, together with a summary of the WEMCO R&D Program from concept evaluation and laboratory testing, through pilot, to full size machine tests. The performance of the WEMCO/Leeds flotation column will be compared to conventional flotation concepts using a flotation "kinetics" approach, which quantifies the floatable and non-floatable specie recovery performance using the Klimpel model as the basis for analysis. The variety of distinct features unique to this concept include a series of barrier rods which are used to advantage, often together with countercurrent reflux water flow, to achieve a significant improvement in product grade. The hydrodynamics associated with the mechanics of "gangue stripping" from the rising "air bubble-floatable specie" matrix will be briefly reviewed.

In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).
