The bagging of dry pulverized products using fluidized air packers creates severe respirable dust problems in many surface mining operations. During bag filling, excess air and product blows by the bag valve/nozzle interface. After bag ejection, dust blows out of the bag valve. During conveying and handling dust is released from the bag valve and dirty bag surface. Overexposure of the bagging machine operator and bag handlers is common. This report describes the development and testing of a new dust control system for bagging machines. The system features a new bag clamp design to reduce product blowby during filling. A controlled vacuum system removes excess air from the bag before ejection, eliminating the problems after bag ejection and during conveying and handling. The system has shown significant reductions in dust exposure for both bag machine operators and bag handlers. These reductions are achieved with no significant effect on total mill productivity.

he flotation studies on hematite were carried out using di (2-ethylhexyl) Phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as the collector. The possible mineral reagent interaction was studied through electrokinetic and dissolution studies. The shift in zeta potential (PZC) and decrease in dissolution of iron in the presence of D2EHPA indicated that D2EHPA was specifically adsorbed on hematite surface. The adsorption imparted necessary hydrophobicity for flotation of hematite. Hematite could be floated selectively from hematite and quartz synthetic mixture. Water well drillers are exposed to high levels of noise while working. NIOSH researchers have found that water well drillers are exposed to levels above 85dB (A) while performing certain tasks during a typical drilling job. Noise levels consistently over 85dB (A) during an 8–hour work shift are hazardous and can lead to hearing loss in workers. Finding ways to reduce noise exposure is difficult because of many factors. The work environment is constantly changing due to the location of jobs and environmental factors. The types of drill rigs required for drilling are expensive. Equipment can range from new to used (10 to 30+ years old). Drillers and owners can work together to prevent noise–induced hearing loss, and measures can be taken to reduce exposure to hazardous noise.[ ] Preventing hearing loss occurs through three stages. The first stage is removing noise from the source (i.e., drill rig). Various parts of a drill rig create noise besides the drilling rod. NIOSH researchers have examined noise levels of drill rigs. Some of the loudest parts of the drill rig include the compressor, engine, and cooling fan (Fig. 1). While removing the noise source from a worksite is ideal, the process would be expensive and difficult.[ ]

In the case of a reservoir where the oil underlies a large gas cap and overlies bottom water, production can be inzproved considerably if wells are perforated below the water-oil contact rather than opposite the oil-bearing section. The theoretical arguments for this improvement, which in some cases may be tenfold, are supported by experimental evidence. INTRODUCTION Reservoirs frequently consist of one sand body containing an oil layer underlying a thick, gas-bearing section and overlying bottom water (Fig. 1). Wells in such reservoirs are customarily opened up opposite the oil-bearing interval or, rather, opposite the lower part of this interval (Fig. 2). More often than not, it is inefficient or prohibited to blow off large quantities of gas with the oil. This im-psses a severe limitation on the drawdown, which results in low oil-production rates. Because of the small difference in specific gravity between oil and water, the latter will easily cone upwards, so that the production of water together with the oil is not prevented by this completion method. In such a situation wells should be opened deeper, in the originally water-bearing zone. The gas can be shut off by not perforating over the upper part of the interval (Fig. 3) or by a tubing hung close to the bottom of the interval (Fig. 4). Initially much water will be produced, but when steady-state conditions have been established (as depicted in Figs. 3 and 4) larger drawdowns are permissible than in a conventionally completed well, and correspondingly higher oil-production rates will result. Water cuts are only slightly higher because of the small effect of gravity on the water-oil flow distribution. CALCULATIONS The ratio of improvement has been estimated by means of approximate calculations. The completion depicted in Fig. 4 is the most convenient basis for these calculations. By postulating that vertical flow gradients can be disregarded, the Appendix shows that the well-known Dupuit formula can be obtained except for some complication due to the presence of two fluids rather than one. The Appendix makes the reasonable assumption that, for suitable boundary conditions, the oil layer occupies a constant fraction of the total fluid height throughout the reservoir. Any defect activity resulting from an applied stimulus on a structure will generate a stress wave which travels in the medium under the laws of acoustics, thus the name of acoustic emission (AE). AE techniques can therefore provide information on the deformation of both surface and below ground structures, Two operating coal mines were monitored from the surface, and both mining activity and post mining microseismic activity were detected. The nature of the detected AE signals demonstrated that there were a range of deformation mechanisms in operation and that some predictive capabilities were possible with the technique.

Rock dust, as a preventive or limiting factor in explosions of gas and coal dust in bituminous-coal mines, was used in larger quantities in 1939 than in any other year except 1937 since annual figures first became available in 1930, Reports from mining companies to the Bureau of Mines revealed that 144,430,000 pounds of rock dust was applied to underground mine workings in mines that produced 126,635,677 short tons of coal during the year. This quantity of rock dust applied averaged 1.14 pounds for each ton of coal produced. Rock dusted mines were the source of 39.7 percent of the total production of bituminous coal from underground mines; 33.2 percent of the total number of underground workers were employed at rock-dusted mines, and 35.9 percent of the total number of man-hours worked underground at all bituminous-coal mines in the United States during 19719 can be accredited to mines so treated.

Because of drilling, completion, and workover practices, the permeability around a wellbore generally is different from the permeability of the formation. The zone with the altered permeability is called "skin" and its effect on the pressure or flow behavior of the well is called "skin effect". Hawkinsl has shown that the radius and the permeability of this zone are related to the skin by: If the permeability in the skin zone is less than that of the formation, the skin is positive; if it is more than that of the formation, the skin is negative. If the two permeabilities are equal, s is zero; that is, there is no skin. Van Everdingen2 and Hurst3 have given mathematical solutions to the case of a zone of reduced permeability around the wellbore. This skin effect is illustrated in Fig. 1. They treat the positive skin as a zone of reduced permeability of infinitesimal thickness around the wellbore. When applied to a well with negative skin, however, their solutions lead to the calculated flowing well pressure which is smaller than the formation pressure, i.e., an injection situation. This is a physical contradiction. In this paper, it is shown that this mathematical difficulty can be overcome by assuming an effective wellbore radius larger than the actual wellbore. Existing solutions2"4 are modified to include the effect of an enlarged wellbore radius, and thus enable the engineer to deal with negative as well as positive skins. An image analysis program can search for gold minerals in polished sections by scanning about 100 x 100 back-scattered electron images at a magnification of x400, allowing gold grains as small as 1 micrometre in diameter to be detected. Typically, a c.15 h overnight search of a product smaller than 45 micrometres will scan c.1 500 000 particles, providing data that are not easily obtained through manual operation of an optical microscope. The program locates grains of the correct brightness, acquires gold X-rays from them by wavelength-dispersive spectrometry, filters the data to remove artefacts and record the images and stage locations for subsequent retrieval. At the end of the run, the program allows the operator to verify and identify the grains found. Industrial studies at Canmet have included determining the nature of gold in cyanidation tailings, checking the mineralogy and size of gold grains in samples from an Indonesian Cu-Au concentrator and locating and measuring gold liberation and grain sizes in an ore

Corundum, natural alumina, or aluminum oxide (A1203) is the hardest mineral known except diamond. Theoretical composition is Al 52.9 percent and 0 17.1 percent, but it always contains small quantities of impurities, chiefly silica, iron, and lime. The melting point of corundum is above 1950° C., and it is insoluble in the strongest acids. Its hardness (9 on the Mohs scale) varies slightly according to purity, and its specific Gravity ranges from 3.95 to 4.10, 4 being a fair average. The index of refraction is 1.760 to 1.768 and its streak is white. Luster is adamantine to Vitreous, come specimens pearly, and color varies widely from white, gray, pink, and blue to black, brown, or bronze. Gem varieties are transparent or translucent, and of more brilliant coloring - red, blue, yellow, purple, or green. Corundum occurs in opaque massive or block structure with parting planes little developed or only roughly delineated and in granular form as minute crystals or small, irregular grains interspersed throughout the contact zones of schists and gneisses.

One of the safety and health research programs of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center was the evaluation of technology that will provide remote-controlled operation of mechanized equipment in underground room-and-pillar mining. The purpose of this effort was to enable workers to be located away from the hazardous and unhealthful coal extraction area (the face). As part of this program, advanced machine navigation and control technologies were developed for underground room-and-pillar and highwall coal mining that can be applied to commercially available mining equipment. These technologies use off-the-shelf components and a flexible control software architecture to minimize the effort required to adapt them to mining equipment. An accurate, reliable navigation system that can provide the mining machine's heading and location is a critical requirement for a remote-controlled mining system. After investigating several different types of navigation sensors, researchers selected the Honeywell Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System (INS) as showing the most promise. It was installed on a continuous mining machine at our Mining Equipment Test Facility. Extensive testing at an open pit (OP) site was also performed. This report describes the INS as it was employed on the mining machine in the laboratory, in the field, and OP tests, and provides the accuracy and performance results of the OP and highwalltests.

The West Coast region of the South Island is situated astride the Pacific û Australian plate boundary zone. The most significant component of this zone is the Alpine Fault. A variety of reconstructions of the pre-Alpine Fault plate tectonic configuration of the New Zealand continental area have been attempted over the past 25 years or so. Most of these have not been closely constrained by a regional compilation of field data related to the age and horizontal displacement history of the Alpine Fault. A model in which the Alpine Fault was initiated no earlier than the interval 18 - 16.5 Ma (B.P.) is proposed, a significantly younger age of inception than has been widely accepted as the onset of dextral displacement along the plate boundary through the South Island. A subsequent history of displacement is presented consistent with the West Coast basin stratigraphy. The alluvial gold content of some parts of the Miocene to Pleistocene conglomerate sequences is also discussed.

Coal production in the United States increased in2004 by 36 Mt (39.7 million st) to end the year at 1 Gt(1.11 billion st), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was a 3.7-percent in-crease from 2003’s 971.6 Mt (1.07 billion st) (Table 1).(All percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) Although U.S. coal consumption rose in 2004, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sectors by 1 percent and declined slightly in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption dropped by 2.4 percent. U.S. coal exports rose for the second consecutive year, while coal imports again increased to record levels. Coal stocks declined during the year, as electric generators used their stockpiles to helpmeet increased demands and missed shipments. Coal producers used their stockpiles to supplement their production levels.

Slag from stainless steelmaking is known to disintegrate, which is an environmental problem and prevents the cooled slag from being utilized. This disintegration is due to the transformation from the ßto the ? polymorph of di-calcium silicate. The transformation is accompanied by an increase in volume of about 11% and a total disintegration of the slag. AOD slag from stainless steelmaking was re-melted in a laboratory induction furnace, together with olivine and calcinated dolomite, to investigate the prevention of disintegration by increased MgO content of the slag with small changes in CaO to SiO2ratio. The modified slag was examined with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The trials showed that an increased MgO content can change the mineral composition towards formation of more Merwinite and Bredigite, which prevents disintegration of the slag. THE mechanism of the martensitic transformation has been the subject of a remarkable number of papers in recent years.' Because the task of evaluating all the available theories is a formidable one, the authors will confine themselves merely to the presentation of results of an experimental investigation of the habit orientation, lattice relations, magnitude and direction of average transformation shear strain, and orientation of subband markings for a single variant of the possible habit systems in an 11 pct Mo-Ti alloy. It is hoped that these data will assist in the establishment of a rigorous theory for the mechanism of the martensitic transformation. Experimental Procedure Specimen Preparation: A sample, approximately 1/2 x 1/4 x 1/4 in., was cut from a double arc-melted ingot composed of commercial-process A titanium and high purity molybdenum (nominally, 11 pct Mo). It was capsuled in evacuated Vycor at 10.-3 mm Hg subsequent to a double argon wash and homogenized for 48 hr at 1100°C. After a direct quench into H2O at room temperature, a large-grained specimen resulted, which, by X-ray diffraction and metallographic means, was subsequently shown to be in the body-centered-cubic phase, ß. Two adjacent, approximately perpendicular faces were polished and the ends of the specimen were ground parallel in a V-block. Fiducial lines were inscribed at 45" to the common edge of the polished surfaces in order that they would be perpendicular to the habit traces of the subsequently formed a plates.2 The specimen was then compressed between the ground ends in a Buehler press to stress induce the transformation ß to a'. Experimental Measurements: The habit-plane orientation, the orientation of subband markings, the orientation relation between the parent ß and the product a', and the transformation strain for the same plate were determined. To further establish the nature of the subbands, one surface was repol-ished and etched. The bands in the a' were still visible and were found to be optically anisotropic under polarized light. Back-reflection Laue patterns were obtained from the ß matrix and from a region comprising both a' plates and adjacent ß matrix (a Cu target was used). By superposition of the two X-ray diffraction patterns, it was possible to obtain a tentative orientation relationship between the two phases. This result was confirmed by a pattern taken after the specimen was rotated to make the basal-plane pole of the hexagonal a' phase strike the film. This necessitated cutting the specimen to expose the a' plate in the new position relative to the X-ray beam. This work aims to study the influence of the nanoclay Cloisite 20A incorporation on mechanical properties of ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene). The incorporation of Cloisite 20A was made in two steps; firstly,a masterbatch was preparated and then, it was incorporated in ABS. The Cloisite 20A masterbatch using 40 % of nanoclay and 60 % of SAN (Styrene Acrylonitrile) was prepared in an adiabatic mill. After that, Cloisite 20A masterbarch at 1 and 5 % (wt) was added in ABS. The resulting nanocomposites were characterized by tensile tests and the correlation between properties was discussed.

In order to provide an initial approach to the deposits of oil shale, nahcolite, and dawsonite in the central area of the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado, the U.S.B.M. and associated contractor personnel drilled and cased a 96-inch ID shaft to a depth of 2,371 feet. The shaft was constructed using "big hole" drilling techniques and succeeded in giving access to previously inaccessible deposits of the above minerals. This report documents the construction from its beginning in January 1977 to its completion in January 1978. Procedures used and problems encountered are discussed in derail.

A leaching column technique that produces effluent similar in quality to coal mine drainage in the Eastern Interior Basin has been developed. The columns are charged with 1000 grams of crushed overburden and cycled through the leaching process once a week for twelve weeks. Inter-relationships among the important chemical constituents are very similar to those present in actual mine drainage waters, but the overall concentrations of ion are more dilute in the leachates. Multiplying the leachate concentrations by a factor of 4.5 gives values similar to mine waters. Available data suggests that each of the leaching cycles represents about three years of natural weathering, so that the leaching technique can predict the evolution of the mire drainage water over a time span of nearly 40 years. Use of the leaching technique with drill core samples should provide a method of approximating mine drainage quality in advance of mining and should be quite useful in identifying potentially toxic units in the overburden. However, the results should he considered to be a 'worst case' situation because the technique' does not consider the effects of reclamation.
