Brown iron ore resources in Barbour , Butler , Crenshaw , and Pike Counties were investigated in a drilling program and geological study by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Alabama Geological Survey and the University of Alabama . The aggregate footage drilled was 18,010 linear feet . When developed , reserves of 12,664,000 long tons of crude ore were indicated , containing from 26.9 to 29.0 percent iron and 0.2 to 1.6 percent manganese under a maximum overburden of 40 feet . Total inferred crude ore for the four counties was calculated to be 827,700,000 long tons . Beneficiation of samples by simulated log washing and use of a 1 / 8 - inch screen yielded from 46.8 to 51.7 percent iron and 0.2 to 2.6 percent manganese . Screen- test studies indicated no appreciable interlocking between the iron and manganese minerals and the waste particles of materials retained on a 200 - mesh screen . Clay was prominent in micron - size slimes . Silica was deleterious in the minus 20 - mesh size . While an indicated 2,198,000 dry long tons of usable iron ore can be recovered , sink - and - float tests show that it may be possible for 4,654,000 dry long tons to be recovered by other than log washing . However , applicable commercial processes have not been demonstrated .

In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil , this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states . Information given on each heavy - oil deposit includes the following items : Field and formation , location , average or range of depth , average API gravity of oil , average thickness of formation , areal extent of field , total productive wells drilled in field , discovery date of field , field status in 1963 , cumulative production to Jan. 1 , 1964 , and all known types of secondary - recovery operations initiated ( active and terminated ) in the reservoirs . The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map , and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text . As of Jan. 1 , 1964 , 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place . It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history , such as the one in Missouri , were included , the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels . To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil , industry is developing technology in several types of thermal - recovery methods . Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study for thermal - recovery techniques are : Lithology , depth , viscosity of reservoir fluids , gravity of oil , reservoir thickness , oil in place , and permeability and porosity .

A complete list of permissible mining equipment, rescue apparatus and gas masks tested prior to January 1, 1925, was published in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 3761. The present list includes all equipment tested and approved by the Bureau, up to and including January 1, 1926, and supersedes the list issued as Serial 27202 in November, 1925. It covers electric air compressors, coal drills, mining machines, mine pumps, room hoists, switches, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, flash lamp, methane indicators and detectors, blasting units, storage battery loco- motives, power trucks, self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and gas masks. The system under which these devices were tested permits the manu- facturer, after his equipment has passed certain tests prescribed by the bureau, to mark his equipment with a seal showing that it has been "approv- ed" by the Bureau of Mines. The tests are designed to insure that the equipment has the minimum requirements for safety in use. The only object of the bureau in making such tests and publishing lists of permissible equipment is to safeguard the lives of workers and to help lessen the hazards of mining.

"Gas hazards may be divided into two principal classes- namely (1) inflammation and explosions; (2) asphyxiation and poisoning. Inflammation and explosion are prevented first by adequate ventilation so that gas sufficient to propagate flame or explosion can not accumulate, and second, by avoiding sources of ignition such as open lights, flames, sparks, electrical arcs, short circuits, or sparks. Ventilation is also the best preventive measure against asphyxiation and poisoning from toxic gases. When men must enter unventilated or poorly ventilated places containing poisonous or asphyxiating gases, suitable gas masks, hose masks, or oxygen breathing apparatus should be worn. As a rule, loss of life and property from gas hazards is due to ignorance of the properties and hazards of various gases commonly used, and consequently a failure to use proper measures for eliminating and meeting these dangers. It is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the common gases and vapors with respect to the hazards involved in their use and to discuss the necessary precautions and methods for avoiding these dangersLight, heat, and power are prime essentials of our modern industrial civilization. The combustible gases and vapors used for the production of these necessary elements of our existence comprise the largest and most common group of domestic and industrial gas hazards. Almost every individual in his daily life subject to possible danger from asphyxiation, fire, or explosion due to one or more of these gases. For evidence one need only refer to the daily newspaper where headlines such as the following are frequently seen; ""Family asphyxiated by carbon monoxide from gas heater;"" ""Schoolhouse wrecked by gas explosion in basement;"" ""Man killed by automobile exhaust fumes in his garage;"" ""Fireman overcome by smoke fumes in basement ""Woman"".""Boman severely burned by accidental ignition of gasoline used in cleaning gloves;"" and 'in recent Years we often see ""Building wrecked by explosion of still in residential district.""It will be noted that these accidents are due to inflammation, explosion, or asphyxiation. Any combustible gas or vapor, when mixed, with air or oxygen within certain limiting proportions, will explode on ignition. The violence of the explosion varies with respective proportions of air and gas, and with the degree of confinement of the mixture. For example: Mixtures of natural gas and air containing between 4.5 and 12 per cent natural gas will explode, or propagate flame throughout the mixture without the continual presence of the source of ignition that started the inflammation. The table following gives the explosive limits of the common combustible gases and air:"

"The Bureau of Mines in Serial No. 2606,4 issued in May, 1924, gave tentative specifications for rock-dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines. Subsequently, a sectional committee of the American Engineering Standards Committee was appointed to formulate recommendations for standard practice in rock-dusting coal mines. The report of this Committee which follows was approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee, December 30, 1925. Several members of the Bureau of Mines staff served on this Sectional Committee and its recommendations are essentially in harmony with those of the Tentative Specifications in Serial No. 2606.As certain explanatory details contained in that serial are not included in the recommendations formulated by the American Engineering Standards Committee, it should be considered by coal-mine managements in conjunction with the committee's report which follows:Recommended American Practice for Rock-Dusting Coal Mines to Prevent Coal-Dust Explosions 1. """To prevent the propagation of mine explosions, the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, recommends rock-dusting all coal mines, except anthracite mines, in every part, whether in damp or dry condition. It also recom¬mends that rock-dust barriers be used to sectionalize the mine as additional defense; but these should not be regarded as a substitute for generalized rock-dusting."" Enormous quantities of limestone are used for metallurgical purposes. Approximately 23 million tons were so used in the United States in 1925 chiefly for smelting iron ores in the blast furnace. Smaller amounts are used in basic open-hearth steel manufacture, and in smelting lead, copper and antimony ores. Most limestone producers lave little knowledge of the way in which their stone is used in metallurgy. Maximum tolerances of silica, alumina, sulphur and possibly magnesium; and minimum content of calcium carbonate may be arbitrarily fixed for the guidance of the producer, but aside from these requirements little information is available to producers on the manner in which their stone is used, the office it performs in smelting, or the effects of impurities. More complete [wledge] of utilization would enable limestone operators to solve their production problems more intelligently.

"As the result of the work of an efficient safety organization, the Midwest Refining Co. at its various operations and particularly in the Salt Creek field has been able to show a definite accident reduction. Lost-time accidents during the past year have been reduced to a small number as compared with previous years, and infection cases have been almost eliminated.The accident-prevention work of the Midwest Refining Co. is in charge of the department of industrial relations, with a director as the administrative head; two safety men handle the work directly at Midwest, Wyo. A competent medical staff with a well-equipped hospital at Midwest is also an important factor in the prompt and proper treatment of injured persons when an employee is injured, he is given first-aid and then taken to the hospital with minimum delay.About 1,450 persons are employed in the 4 departments (production, gas, pipe lines, and electrical) and in the 34 districts of the Midwest Refining Co. The work at Midwest spreads over a considerable area, and new drilling operations, pipe work, and similar activities require the services of many small gangs of workers. Complete supervision, of each job, whether shall or large, is possible through the large number of superintendents, foremen, and gang pushers employed; thus, there are 20 superintendents, 78 foremen, and 115 gang pushers. The largest number of men under any one toss is approximately 15, and it is probable that much of the good safety record is due to this intensive supervision. These company officials, including the gang pushers, have been impressed with the idea that it is their duty to see that the men under them do not get hurt; the responsibility of instructing new employees in safety practices is placed directly upon them. Monthly meetings of the field officials, including superintendents, foremen, and gang pushers, and as far as possible the men, of each district are held with the safety engineer. Both officials and men are encouraged to bring up for discussion any practice or proposals looking to the changing of any conditions that will"

"The underlying principle of the storage battery was discovered within the memory of many still living, hence storage-battery locomotives, which were made possible by this discovery, represent a still more recent development. The Journal of the Franklin Institute for December, 1883, gives an account of the building of an electrical omnibus by The Electrical Storage Battery Co., of Millwall, London, This, if not the first, was among the first attempts to, use the storage battery as the source of energy for locomotion.During the period 1888 to 1893 occasional attempts were made to apply this idea practically, but not much was achieved along useful lines.. The progress during the next, 15 years was slow, and little success was achieved. Therefore, the last two decades may be considered the successful development period of the storage-battery locomotive.In coal mining, the application of the storage-battery locomotive is chiefly in gathering service in competition with animal or cable-reel locomotives. The locomotive delivers empty cars to the rooms or working places where the coal is being mined and hauls the loaded cars from the rooms. The length of haul depends upon the distance of, the junction point from the active workings of the mine. As a rule the haulage from the junction point to the foot of the shaft or bottom of the slope is done by trolley locomotives, but in some instances where the grades permit this main-line haulage work it: performed by storage-battery locomotives.As the place storage-battery locomotives occupy with respect to safe haulage in gassy mines appears to be misunderstood, it is the purpose of this paper to clarify this point.Those who originally designed storage-battery locomotives had no thought of safety in mind and it is just as well that they did not, as these early types of storage-battery locomotives with open controller open motor, open rheostats, flimsy headlights, and crude wiring were very dangerous electrically and not at' all suitable for use in a gassy mine. These locomotives, however, were placed in mines in which open lights were permitted and they replaced considerable animal haulage. Later they were gradually introduced in mines where closed lights were used, but in most cases these mines were not extremely gassy."

It is with some diffidence that I venture to address the Montreal Section of the Society of Chemical industry on the subject of motor fuel from coal at a time when crude petroleum is produced in greater quantities than at any time in history, and at a time when the known reserves exceed all expectations, even the optimistic estimates of the Committee of Eleven of the American Petroleum Institute. Not only are new fields being discovered in America a -an embarrassing frequency but sources outside of the North American Continent show, unmistakable signs of adding materially to the world's sources of oil. Were it not for the tremendous scientific and technical importance of the work done in the past few years in transforming coal into liquid motor fuels, I should prefer to let this subject rest until a more propitious time, such as prevailed some years ago, when the gasoline consumption curve was rising rapidly and the production curve was slowing in its upward rise. That was the period which stimulated the researches which resulted in tetra ethyl lead and anti-knock gasolines on this side of the Atlantic and in methanol, synthetic gasoline and hydrogenation of coal on the other side. Some of you will recall a symposium on Motor Fuels and Oil Conservation held at the Chemists' Club n New York in September; 1925. Dr. R. L. Brown and I presented a paper at this meeting on "Complete Utilization of Coal and Motor, Fuel, in which we pointed out that coal was the most likely raw material source of gasoline substitutes if and when needed. This information circular is written is response to the marry requests for information on the recovery, or reason for poor recovery, of fine gold by the amalgamation process. Checking Gold Content Experience has shown that in many cases error has been made because the true told content of a particular sample or deposit was not known. Fire assays of representative samples give accurate results and should be considered final in determining the gold content.

"The belief is now fairly general among the coal-mining people of the United States that one of the most effective methods of preventing wide-spread coalmine .explosions is that of introducing rock-dust into coal mines to reduce the inflammability or explosibility of dusts found on mine surfaces. Notwithstanding this belief it is improbable that even a small fraction of 1 per cent of the coal mines of the United States are at all adequately protected by rock-dust; in a survey made in the summer, and fall of 1927 it was found that but 463 out of more than 7,000 operating bituminous and lignitic coal mines were using rock-dust at all, and that few if any of the 463 were fully or adequately protected by rock-dusting.Inspections of a large number of mines through the United States by Bureau of Mines safety division field men have failed to reveal a single adequately rock-dusted mine, Yet there is no doubt that many of the owners and operators believed their properties to be fully protected by rock-dust against the much-feared hazard of widespread explosion. Two of the most disastrous explosions of recent years occurred at properties where the owners were definitely of the belief that the rock-dusting done had made the mines immune to widespread explosion involving coal-dust. In both instances it was found that although some rock-dusting had been done, the mines were more nearly 1 per cent than 100 per cent rock-dusted.This condition as to inefficiency or insufficiency of rock-dusting in the coal mines of the United States is almost universal, and unless our mining men awaken to its, dangers, the disaster record of the coal-mining industry is much more likely to become worse than better. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 1928, the attention of the safety division of the United States Bureau of Mines was called to. 22 explosions With 320 fatalities in bituminous coal mines of the United States; and of the 22 explosions there were 10 with 258 fatalities in mines that were listed as having used rock-dust; upon investigation it was found that as usual the rock-dusting had been anything but comprehensive or adequate. It is probable that in a very few instances last year the relatively small amount of rock-dusting stopped the .extension of the explosion and thus prevented further expansion of the death list. In general, however, the explosions occurred in a part of the mine that had not been rock-dusted - and right here is the crux of the failure or probable failure of present-day rock-dusting in the United States, There should be no part of any bituminous or coal mine in which all of the exposed surfaces (roof, ribs, and floor) have not been thoroughly rock-dusted and kept thoroughly rock-dusted. In other words, all exposed surfaces of all accessible places in bituminous and lignitic coal mines should be kept covered with rock-dust so that the combined rock-dust coal-dust mixture at all times and in all places has less than 35 or 40 per cent combustible matter, The only exception to this rule is that surfaces which are wet (and this does not mean merely damp) need not be rock-dusted. However, a mine opening may have several inches of water on the floor and yet have much explosive dust on the ribs and roof above the water; in such places the ribs and roof should be kept rock-dusted, irrespective of the wetness of the floor."

Each mining district presents different problems as to the methods of ore extraction cad underground support, which are dependent upon the type of the ore deposit and the character of the inclosing rock. Mining costs, however, depend largely aeon the efficiency with which the methods employed underground are [applie] as well as upon the selection of the method best adapted to the physical conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present to the operator in other districts a detailed description of ho mining method used ins results obtained in tie exploitation of the bedded magnetite deposits of the Mineville district. The town of Mineville is situated in the Adirondacks, five miles west of Port Henry on Lake Champlain.

The Holmes Safety Association , organized and named in honor of the late Dr. Joseph A. Holmes , first director of the United States Bureau of Mines , has for its object the prevention cf accidents , the improvement of health conditions at work, in the home , and in public places , and the promotion of the general welfare of its members . As a means of preventing accidents and advancing health and safety , the Holmes Safety Association disseminates information , gives instructions on subjects related to safety , and promotes first -aid and other forms of protective and accident - prevention training . This organization is intended to work and cooperate in the closest possible way with existing mine or plant safety organizations in conducting educational , social , and recreational activities for the promotion of health , safety , and efficiency .

So many subjects are covered in State mine-safety regulations that any attempt to compare different State laws in their entirety would be futile. On the other hand, if one selects a single phase or branch of safety work, such a comparison may prove profitable. The subject selected for study in this paper is limited to legislation or regulations dealing specifically with safeguarding (electric) motored equipment used in gassy mines. T When one reads glowing accounts of the safety activities being carried on here and there it is easy to believe that everything which is right and proper is being done to safeguard the mine.workers; but, when one takes time to look into the weakness of many State regulations, it is evident that there is still room for improvement. Undoubtedly it would have been much better for the safety of mines if electrical equipment had been introduced into mines 50 years earlier. If electricity had been in general use when the first mine regulations were pre- pared, those formulating the rules would have covered this hazard along with other hazards, but as electricity came in at a later period, safe mine legisla- tion regarding it has been woefully neglected. Today the United States in general is far behind most other coal-producing nations in the provision of adequate safety rules or laws for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and wiring. Returning to the subject of our study, approximately 30 of the 48 States mine coal. More than 20 of these States' produce coal in large quantities. How- ever, of the 30 States only four, 3 Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia, have laws which specially call for the use of explosion-proof types

It covers electric air compressors, coal drills, mining machines, loading machines, conveyors, mine pumps, room hoists, mine telephones, rock-dusting machines, switches, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, flash lamps, methane indicators and detectors, blasting units, storage barrery locomotives, tandem locomotives, power trucks, concrete mixers, self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and gas masks. The system under which those devices were tested permits the manufacturer, after his equipment has passed certain tests prescribed by the Bureau of Mines, to mark his equipment with a seal shoring that it has been "approved" by the Bureau. These tests are designed to insure that the equipment has the minimum requirements for safety in use. For a number of years the efforts of the coal -mining industry , as well as of the Bureau of Mines , have been directed largely towards the limitation and prevention of explosions in coal mines . The origin of most explosions is ignition of methane or marsh gas , but the extent and violence of these explosions depend chiefly on the combustible dust present . The Bureau of Mines has conducted a large number of tests on the use of incombustible materials in limiting or preventing widespread explosions . The result of these tests , published in Bulletins 167 and 268 and Technical Paper 386 , proves that incombustible dust can be so applied and maintained in coal mines that the ignition of the mixture of incombustible and combustible dusts , or the propagation of flame by the dust mixture , is impossible ; on the other hand , experience and experiment indicate that watering methods are not reliable as a preventive of general or widespread coal-mine explosions . This report describes the use of " mudite , " a mixture of water and finely divided incombustible soil or dirt applied in some coal mines as a means of attempting to limit or prevent widespread explosions .

The first thing to consider in prevention of electric shock is the voltage of the circuit. No person can be sure that he will not be killed, even from a 110-volt circuit, if he makes proper contact with the circuit so as to cause the maximum current to pass through his body. As the voltage is increased to 250 volts, 500 volts, or 2,300 volts the danger from contact with the electric circuit is increased, Alternating current of the same nominal voltage is possibly more dangerous than direct current. Experience has taught us that both will cause death, and that if the fatalities from this source are to be kept low, certain precautions in the guarding of circuits must be observed.
