Two low water flux test covers were placed on acid generating waste rack dumps at the Kidston Gold Mine in Queensland, Australia The climate is semi arid with distinct wet/dry seasons. The present study was initiated to develop a cover system to restrict infiltration. The design of the cover required optimization of water storage and evapotranspiration. Instrumentation was installed on both dumps to measure infiltration, moisture conditions and climatic parameters. Field measurements over the last three years indicate that both covers are performing satisfactorily. Selection of the final cover for closure is described on the basis of these results.

More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

To determine the relative permeability of the soil a series of percolation tests were performed at the three locations of interest at Lanse, i.e., 3C, 03A and strip bank, and KA and KB at Kato. Soil cores were removed to 2, 8, 16, 24 and 32 inch depths with the thin wall sampler tube, each core separated from the next by about fifteen feet. Then two-foot-long thin-wall tubes were inserted into the 2, 8, and 16 inch deep holes and three-foot long tubes were inserted into the 24 and 36 inch deep holes. Each tube was tamped down about one inch further to assure a bottom seal; the tubes were filled with water and the rate of fall was measured. The test is similar to those done for septic tank percolation studies 6; but is not quantitatively related to Darcy's coefficient of hydraulic conductivity because the water can flow in three dimensions from the bottom of the tube. The measurements are dependent on the length of test, since the rate of fall is a function of the head. Therefore, it should be noted that the 24 and 32 inch deep tubes should give faster percolation rates because of the one foot greater head. At locations 03A and 3C the data show a sharp decrease in percolation at increasing depth, Table XV. However, the percolation at 03A and 32 inch depth is much higher than at 3C (0.2 vs. 0.01 inches/hour); the fragipan layer must be deeper at the 3C location since this area does experience a perched water table. On the strip bank the rates of falling head are randomly variable, appearing to be as much dependent on the particular location of insertion as on depth of placement. For example, water drained from the 16 inch tube as fast as it was added, probably into a sub-surface cavity or crevice. At Kato the tubes were more difficult to place because of interference of tree roots. For this reason 2 inch deep tubes were not inserted. These short tests at Kato were inconclusive, varying extensively when the tubes were moved. Field permeability tests were also performed in two (previously described) eight-inch diameter permeater tubes at Lanse and one at Kato. Because the soil is confined inside the tube, hydraulic conductivity can be calculated according to Darcy's flow equation. The high values reported in Table XVI experienced when the tubes were rewetted from a dry surface condition, enable us to conclude that infiltration is faster than the saturated permeability of the soil. In contrast to the falling head percolation tests, these permeability results do not show a high variation between locations.

Masses of pyritic copper and zinc ores are entrapped along the contact zone between two volcanic groups in the Matagami area. The upper limits of the sulphide concentrations tend to form concordant contacts against lava or cherty tuffite units of the younger group; the lower extremities tend to either follow transverse structures or merge with zones of dispersed sulphides. The sulphides are deformed and intruded by folded dykes. Close relations between metallization boundaries and volcanic lithology and stratigraphy, and a preliminary investigation of the fabrics and crystallization temperatures of the sulphide masses, suggest that the copper and zinc (but; not necessarily all the iron sulphides) were emplaced at h1gh temperatures during volcanism in near-surface lithological-stratigraphic traps. Introduction T HE Matagami area is centered 120 miles north of the Val d'Or and Noranda camps in north-western Quebec. For the present purpose, it is considered to comprise a 155-square-mile area in Isle-Dieu, Galinee and Daniel townships which encompasses the main sulphide masses. "Unusually rich molybdenum ores (cutoff grade = 4.10/0 Mo) hosted by Lower Cambrian black shales have been mined since 1985 near Zunyi in the province of Guizhou in China. Similar ores were once worked for Mo and Ni near Dayong in the province of Hunan. In both mining areas, mineralization occurs in Lower Cambrian black shale (Niutitang Formation and stratigraphic equivalents) as a single sulfide bed or lens with exposed thicknesses up to 15 cm and reported thicknesses up to 35 cm. In addition to high Mo values (4% to 7%), ore samples contain up to 7% Ni, 2% Zn, 2.5% As, and several hundred ppb Au and Pt-group elements, but the precious metals have never been recovered from the ores. Sporadic occurrences of Mo-Ni sulfide ore beds are found in at least five provinces stretching approximately 1600 Ian from Yunnan to Zhejiang. None of the Mo-Ni ore-bed occurrences has any obvious connection with mafic or ultramafic source rocks. Similar occurrences containing elevated values for Ni, Mo, and PGE exist in Devonian black shale in the Yukon. Future exploration for Pt, Au, Mo, and Ni deposits should consider this previously unknown type of sediment-hosted mineral deposit.Sommaire - Des minerais anormalement riches en molybdène (teneur-limite = 4.1% Mo) provenant de schistes argileux noirs du Cambrien Inferieur ont été exploites depuis 1985 près de Zunyi dans la province de Guizhou en Chine. It is the author's opinion, based on many field experiences over several years, that it is usually better to design a rougher flotation circuit with long rows of rougher cells for high tonnage capacity for maximum recovery and better operating efficiency than the alternative of a greater number of shorter rows with proportionately less tonnage of feed per row. Recent plant studies and tests in the 12,000 ton per day flotation plant of the Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp., Cebu, P. I., have given further substantial support to this opinion. There are two flotation sections in this concentrator: 1) Section 1, treating half the tonnage to the total mill, has eight rows of rougher cells, each row containing 360 cu ft of cell volume. Two separate constructed treatment wetland (CTW) systems receiving the same metal contaminated, acid sulfate water over different lengths of time and at different rates were evaluated for metal attenuation. Both wetlands are the alkalinity generator portion of a succesive alkalinity producing system (SAPS). Sequential extractions are employed to determine phases of metal removal. Results indicate that Fe, Al, Zn, Ni. and Cu accumulate in the organic substrate over time. Manganese accumulates initially, but is not retained in the system over time.

The presentation describes the operation and field test results of a seafloor massive sulphide prospecting system. The prospecting system is deployed from a work-class ROV, and it features a new and innovative electromagnetic ocean floor conductivity sensor. It also includes magnetometers, a multibeam sonar, and subsea cameras. The prospecting system has been used in two exploration campaigns - one in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2007 and again in 2008 in both PNG and Tonga waters. The 2007 campaign used the prototype sensor, and the 2008 campaign used a Mark II version. Correlations between drill core samples and EM conductivity results are excellent. New prospecting system data will be used to help plan future core drilling locations. The presentation discusses the principle of operation of the EM conductivity sensor, discusses improvements made in the EM sensor and the overall prospecting system, and shows exploration results. "Field sampling and testing are part of the Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) requirements for all Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) Projects. Field sampling and testing are also used for determining the performance and quality of soil mixing method(s) and are the primary basis for accepting or rejecting the soil mixing wall among all other QC testing. Two of the most commonly recognized and used sampling methods for CDSM walls are wet grab sampling and verification coring. Depending on the types of wall construction and project budget, one or both of these methods are normally used to help evaluate the in-situ matrix and quality of the mixed soils. Additional to ASTM strength and permeability testing from wet grab sampling and verification coring, more and more testing methods are being employed and accepted. However, these other testing methods tend to be unnecessary, lack consistency and repeatability, and are more subjective to manipulation and interpretation. In certain projects, there are also misconceptions involved with the results of wet grab sampling and verification coring, hence it is important to note how these wet grab sampling and verification coring work and represent the work in terms of quality of production.TYPES OF PROJECTSCDSM projects include (but not limited to) in-situ stabilization, liquefaction mitigation, excavation support, groundwater cutoff, and pollution containment. Although these projects use similar equipment on the jobsites, each project is treated differently in terms of catering to specification, uses of different mix designs, and emphasis on certain steps during production.Different types of projects with different specification changes the focus of quality, but soil types in jobsite also determine how to proceed with production. For example, a jobsite with predominate gravel layer must be treated differently as opposed to jobsite with clayey sand as the main soil type.WET GRAB SAMPLEWet grab sampling is one of the most used testing methods for QA/QC. The wet grab sample specimen is retrieved right after finishing the production of the desired element.Wet grab sampling equipment consist the use of 28 cubic inch (458.84 cubic cm) box attached directly to one of the auger stems. Hinges attached to the top and bottom of the box is fabricated to allow collection only during auger withdrawal. The collection box is strapped just above the mixing paddles on the auger stem and measured from the center auger head tip to confirm proper depth of collection. This box method has been used in Japan and U.S. for numerous projects."

The disposition of world mineral resources is such that a vital need exists for both the most efficient development of existing resources and the rapid disclosure of as-yet undiscovered resources. The technological developments described in this report are directed primarily toward the acceleration and increased efficiency of mineral-resource exploration program. In the past decade the use of computers in the mineral industry has grown exponentially. Most computer applications in mineral exploration are designed to be implemented either before or after data collection. Few, if any, computer applications are designed to be used during the collection of data. One major reason for the lack of development of computer applications in this area is that comunications links do not exist between computing systems and the remote areas that host mineral-deposit exploration programs.

This study was designed to demonstrate the viability of using high-frequency radio transmission as a means of communications between a remote field camp and a time- sharing computer system. A field camp near Johnstown, Pa., was linked by high- frequency radio to a base station 160 miles to the southeast in Vienna, Va. The base station was in turn linked by telephone to a time-sharing computer system near Los Angeles, Cal. Error-free data transmission utilized highly stable receivers and transmitters, forward error correction, and dual-frequency diversity. Three geologic applications programs resident in the Los Angeles computer were executed from a graphics cathode ray tube terminal in the field. Bulk data equivalent in volume to 4 days of typical spectrographic analytical work generated by one spectrograph and one spectrophotometer were transmitted from the field to the base station. All programs, were executed successfully, and all data were transmitted error free.

Since 1988, there have been thirteen documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through near surface strata into structures or other enclosed spaces as a result of nearby trench blasting or surface mine blasting. From these incidents, there are thirty suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and one fatality associated with these incidents. To better understand the variables contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out a small- scale field study to identify key factors that may contribute to the migration of CO through the ground. NIOSH conducted single- hole heavily confined experimental test shots to measure the radial pressure pulse as it propagated through surrounding monitoring holes to determine if a relationship existed between the pressure pulse and resulting CO measurements afterwards. NIOSH also monitored blasts at an airport construction site. Following the detonations, the concentrations of CO, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were monitored for several days in the surrounding satellite holes. The peak CO measurements relative to distances from the shots were compared. Pressure histories and peak particle velocities (PPV) were measured at monitoring boreholes. It was found that the differential pressures recorded within the boreholes give some indication as to the likelihood of CO appearing, whereas the PPV measurements do not seem to be as good an indicator for potential CO migration. In this limited study, changes in barometric pressure had very little influence on removing the trapped detonation products, whereas applying a vacuum to the monitoring holes was effective in reducing the entrapped CO concentration.

On-land waste rock dumps at BHP Billiton Base MetalsÆ Island Copper Mine (ICM) near the northern end of Vancouver Island, B.C. continue to discharge ARD. These waters, which amount to approximately five million cubic metres each year, are injected into a three-layer, meromictic pit lake for treatment. The top layer is brackish water, replenished by each yearÆs rainfall (amounting to nearly 2 m/year). This top layer of water must meet effluent permit limits for heavy metals. This water eventually exfiltrates through a æbeachÆ waste rock dump, which is 93 per cent submerged along the north shore of Rupert Inlet. The middle and bottom layers of the Pit Lake are saline and currently oxic (2 mg/L dissolved oxygen) and anoxic (0.03 mg/L dissolved oxygen), respectively. Spreading of a liquid fertilizer every ten days throughout the top layer results in plankton and bacterial blooms that scavenge zinc, copper and cadmium out of this layer eventually to become mineral sediment in the bottom of the pit lake. Adsorption on planktonic skeletons and mineral precipitates also scavenges these dissolved metals from the middle and bottom layers to form bottom sediment. Sulfate reduction has recently begun in the bottom sediments. Diagenetic processes in the bottom sediments will eventually transform most of the dissolved heavy metals into insoluble sulfides. Cycling of ferric iron between the sediment and the water column and back seems to contribute dramatically to the biogeochemical metal removal processes. This biogeochemical system serves to maintain the top-layer water well within permit limits for discharge to the environment.

Longwall coal mine operators in the U.S. are required to ventilate multipanel longwall districts, but may have little or no knowledge about what happens to the ventilation air between the inlet evaluation points (IEPs), bleeder evaluation points (BEPs) and bleeder fans. The effectiveness of bleeder performance can directly influence the ability of a ventilation system to remove and dilute coal bed methane emissions. U.S. coal mining stakeholders have acknowledged their belief that the T-junction split at the longwall face tailgate corner is very important in controlling the distribution of ventilation air. To obtain direct measurements of bleeder performance, a tracer gas, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), was released into the ventilation air stream on active and inactive longwall panels. Testing was performed on multiple longwall panels that included various phases of longwall development and variable path lengths of ventilation air transport to bleeder fan installations. Changes in the T-junction ventilation air distribution over the life of a longwall panel, and its variable effect on panel ventilation airflow are discussed. These findings will assess the effectiveness of commonly applied ventilation strategies for improving air distribution and ventilation controls to meet statutory requirements.

During the summer of 1980, a field project was carried out to determine the stability of the beautiful and dramatic natural limestone pinnacles (locally termed "Hoodoos") at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, when subjected to ground motions and airblasts resulting from proposed strip coal mine blasting. The concern arose from environmental considerations associated with the proposed development of a large coal strip mine which would approach within 4 miles of the park. The pinnacles range up to 150 ft in height and are quite slender, producing a fragile appearance. The remoteness and ruggedness of the area required a field camp, and 4-wheel drive vehicles, helicopters, and snowcats for support. Portable magazines were necessary to store the more than 7 tons of blasting agents and explosives required. In conducting the blasting, great attention was paid to environmental impacts. In the field, a target pinnacle was selected and instrumented with mechanical strain gages, and research seismographs that required helicopter placement.

Preliminary results are given of solvent stimulation of two wells producing viscous oil (14°-17° API) from the Tar zone in the Wilmington field, California. The solvent (coker oil, an intermediate refinery product) was injected into the formation, and after a soak period, the well was returned to production. Data are given on crude oil properties, solvent properties, determination of volume of solvent in the produced oil, rate of oil production before and after stimulation, volume of additional oil produced, and volume of solvent recovered. Although further study and improvement of the method arcs needed, cyclic solvent stimulation appears to be an unqualified success in one well and a moderate success in the other.

Operating heavy construction equipment is often associated with elevated rates of low back discomfort (LBD). However, there have been few formal studies that dealt with evaluating controls that can reduce the LBD among these workers. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using a continuous passive lumbar motion system (CPLMS) in reducing low back discomfort among operators of heavy earthmoving equipment. The CPLMS is an additional seat support that has a lumbar support bladder and a pump to provide cyclic inflation and deflation. Two groups of operators were identified as potential subjects for this intervention study, the intervention group with a mean age of 41.2 years and experience of 9.7 years used the CPLMS, and the control group with a mean age of 37.5 years and experience of 7.6 years did not use the CPLMS. Body part discomfort surveys were collected from both groups. In addition, the intervention group completed a CPLMS preference survey. The body part discomfort survey was collected up to eight days at three different times of the day. Results from the body part discomfort survey showed a decreasing trend the longer the CPLMS was used, for both the upper and low back region. A decreasing trend for the low back was also found comparing morning to evening discomfort scores across the days when using the CPLMS. When compared to their regular seat, 54% of the operators felt very comfortable in using the CPLMS, 36% of them wanted one for their equipment, and 54% showed interest in experimenting with the CPLMS for a longer time period. Results from this study indicate that the use of a CPLMS can effectively reduce the low back discomfort experienced by operators of heavy construction equipment.

A new technique for the determination of trace levels of uranium in solution has been developed. A compact laser emits short, but intense, ultraviolet pulses to excite the green fluorescence of a uranyl-complex formed by the addition of a proprietary reagent to the sample. Organic species present in most natural waters also fluoresce quite intensely, but their emission does not last appreciably longer than the excitation pulse, in contrast to the relatively long persistence of the uranyl fluorescence . Electronic 'gating' is employed to separate the long-lived contribution, rejecting substantially the organic emission. Results using the laser fluorescence method on many sets of natural waters of various origins have been compared against corresponding values generated by independent laboratories. Correlation has been generally good over a range from less than 0.1 to more than 100 ppb U. Solid samples have also been analyzed after extraction of the uranium into solution. Accuracies adequate for most exploration purposes have been achieved, but further work is required to determine effects of interferences in samples with complex matrices. The transport and deposition of uranium in natural waters is controlled by the organic and inorganic chemistry of the waters involved. It is suggested that interpretation of very low uranium levels will be aided by additional measurements of conductivity and organic content, with subsequent statistical treatment.
