"The shell (exoskeleton) waste of shellfish such as shrimps and crabs is the raw material in the extraction of chitosan, a polymer. Chitosan has several medicinal values such as reduction in cholesterol, urea and creatine in the blood. It is estimated that about 40000 tonnes of chitosan may be obtained from all chitin yielding invertebrate sources of India and a foreign exchange of 600 million US$ could be earned annually. Awareness has to be created among sea food processors to put up plants to convert shellfish wastes into chitosan. Similarly pharmaceutical industries may use chitosan in the development of new drugs. Types of training and awareness programmes to be organized for entrepreneurs, sea food processors and pharamacists are discussed in this paper.IntroductionIndia earns annually foreign exchange to the tune of 0.8 million US$ by exporting processed marine crustacean shellfish resources such as shrimps, crabs and lobsters (Figure 1) through 300 sea food processing industries. At present, only a small quantity of shell wastes (exoskeleton) generated from the above is utilized as an ingredient in fish feeds and hence much of the wastes are disposed off either as land fill or by direct dumping in sea. This paper describes the performance of the copper industry over a period of some two decades and examines the theme that improvements in operating efficiency have not been matched by improved returns on capital. The financial performance of the copper industry is analysed using CRU's MICA database. Regression analysis indicates a two percentage point increase in operating margins but no increase in returns on capital. The gain in operating efficiency appears to have been mainly achieved in the mid 1980s. The investment boom of recent years has resulted in a rapid increase in the industry's level of debt and gearing ratio (now some 47%). Data on 44 copper mine projects is used to show the linear relationship between scale and capital costs. Typically new capacity costs some US$5,000 /tpy. The relationship between cash costs and capital intensity of projects is also plotted. The greater attention now being focused on efficient use of capital means that capital intensity rankings will become increasingly important in determining which projects go ahead.

Polish Copper Industry, located in the Lepica-Glogów region and operated since the 1970's, includes four mines and two smelters, "Legnica" and "Glogów", the latter consisting of "Glogów" I" and "Glogów II" both having different technologies. The "Legnica" and the "Glogów I" smelters using shaft furnaces, so sulfur elimination largely takes place during batchwise converting, resulting in fluctuation SO2-concentration between less than 1% up to 10% in the converter pas W the sulfuric acid plants. The ensuing difficulties of the past have now largely been overcome. Introduction of flash smelting at "Glogów II" with subsequent acid making by double SO2-conversion from the stable process gas, contributed significantly to further reduction Of SO2-emission. In 1994 a new double conversion sulfuric acid plant was installed at "Glogów l" as well as a "Solinox" desulfurisation plant at "Legnica", further reducing SO2 emission considerably, The next step towards this goal under consideration is a semi-dry desulfurization system for the "Glogów I" power station, SO2- abatement measures by KGHM and the results thereby achieved are presented.

A fused salt electrochemical process was investigated for the synthesis of non-oxide ceramic powders directly from metal oxides, boric oxide, and carbon powders by electro-deoxidation. Sintered pellets of the mixed powders were designed to act as a composite cathode in the electrolytic cell. Electrolysis was carried out in molten CaCl2-NaCl eutectic at 3.1 V and at 600-900 ºC under argon. The favoured cathodic reaction was the removal of the oxygen from the oxides to produce metal atoms that reacted with either the reduced boron atoms, forming a metal boride, or the carbon initially present in the sintered pellets to produce a metal carbide. The technical viability of the process was demonstrated by the electro-deoxidation of sintered pellets of TiO2/B2O3 and TiO2/C to produce TiB2 and TiC, respectively. Compared to existing carbothermic reduction process, this new electrochemical process may be less energy intensive and may lead to lower production costs. I

All Outokumpu flash furnaces burn some hydrocarbon fuel. Hydrocarbon combustion supplements heat from Fe and S oxidation and provides local heating in cool; parts of the furnace. Adjustment of hydrocarbon fuel combustion rate is an effective way of controlling furnace temperature. More oxygen and more oxidation of Fe?and S in the flash furnace continue to diminish the need for1hydrocarbon fuel. Still, as Tables 2.1 and 3.1 show, all flash furnaces use it. Oil is the most common fuel -natural gas, coal and coke are also used. This chapter demonstrates how hydrocarbon fuel is included in our flash furnace matrix. It shows that: (a) three new variables, mass hydrocarbonfoel. mass CO2 in offgas and mass H2O in offgas are inserted (b) carbon and hydrogen balances are added (c) hydrocarbon fuel quantity is specified (d) ,the oxygen balance is modified to include CO2 and H2O (e) the enthalpy balance is modified to include hydrocarbon fuel, CO2 and H20.

The Tyrone copper solution extraction and electrowinning plant was the first such facility built by Phelps Dodge Mining Company in 1984. Over the next 20 years, the aqueous flow rate capacity of the plant has been expanded from the original design of 12,000 gallons per minute (gpm) to 34,000 gpm to meet production goals in the face of declining copper grades in the leach solutions. The ability to process higher aqueous flow rates through existing equipment comes at the expense of increased organic loss through entrainment to raffinate. These losses of organic (diluent and extraction reagents) can account for up to 10 percent of the plant?s total operating costs. With the recent dramatic price increase of petroleum-based products, these operating costs due to losses are sure to increase. This paper will discuss recent improvements at the Tyrone SXEW plant that have resulted in a 40 percent reduction of organic losses. These improvements include picket fence modifications, new fence materials, organic recovery systems, and operational practices within the solution extraction process.

The SKS copper smelting process was jointly developed by Shuikoushan Mining Corp. and ENFI (Beijing Central Engineering and Research Institute for Non-ferrous Metallurgical Industries) in China. It is a new bath copper concentrate smelting process with oxygen enriched air. The pilot plant testwork was completed successfully in 1993. SKS has demonstrated to be an advanced bottom blown smelting process. This technology got the First Class Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress awarded by CNNC (China National Non-ferrous Metal Industry Corp.) in 1994. The SKS process has significant capital and operating cost advantages. Its environmental and industrial safety and hygiene performance represents a substantial improvement when compared to conventional technologies. The technology has generated great interest in the Chinese metallurgical industry. Feasibility studies and basic designs have been carried out to incorporate in retrofit and green field smelter projects in China and abroad. This paper describes the history of the pilot plant operating data (50 tonnes dry feed/day), and discusses the features of the SKS technology, its application and possible future trends.

"Since the industrial revolution, plastic products sector has growing bigly, however this fact presents as consequence the increase of municipal plastic waste (MPW).The aim of this work is to developmet polymer mixture from MPW with the adittion of rubber tire (TR) post use and to study the mechanical and morphologycal properties. The polymer mixtures Polypropylene/High impact polystyrene/TR (PP/HIPS/TR), where rate weight TR used was 10, 20 and 30 % and with three size particles (500, 710 e 1000 µm). The specimen tests were obtained by injection molding. Preliminary results of mechanical properties showed that the increase of TR influence in a reduction of the flexural and tensile resistance. Results by scanning electronic microscopy on the fracture surface of mixtures PP/HIPS/TR showed a better interaction of TR particle with HIPS than with PP. Also, the presence of microcavoids was observed, characteristic in PP/HIPS blends, favouring in the increase of its opacity.IntroductionOne great part of the municipal solid waste (MSW) is composed of polymer mixed since commodity plastics, blend to polymer composite. The processing of plastics mixtures for recycling has been attempted with some success, but poor mechanical properties and uncertain economic value limit their more versatile reuse. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and polystyrene (PS) are among the most common plastic waste, predominantly used in packaging food industry [1].One other problem that preoccupy to the society is the increase of rubber tire waste in the proportion of MSW. In Brazil, from 1999 to 2004, 39 % from 386 mil ton of tire post-use were destined to ciment Industry as source of energy [2]. However this destiny produces one other problem, environment pollution, due to gas mixture emitted.Recycling represents a valid alternative to the disposal of post-consumer plastics in common landfills if it is possible to obtain new materials with good final properties compatible with practical and, above all, by cheap methods [3]The reutilization of group tire rubber (TR) powder as a dispersed elastomeric phase in a thermoplastic matrix offers an opportunity to design second generation materials which would be recyclable due to the thermoplastic matrix and which potentially could present thermoplastic elastomer (TPE)-like mechanical behavior. The carbon composite brick is a new refractory used in blast furnace hearth and bottom. It caused wide attention due to its high thermal conductivity and low erosion by molten iron. In this paper, chemical constituents, SEM-EDS and X-ray diffraction were carried out in order to understand reaction mechanisms. A series of experiments of oxidation resistance characteristics were made. The oxidation mechanisms of carbon composite bricks in the presence of air were analyzed. According to the analysis on many experimental results, the oxidation process of carbon composite bricks under different temperatures were controlled by different mechanisms. In the condition of high temperature, SiO2 as oxidation product hindered the diffusion of O2, and reduced the oxidation loss of graphite in the internal.

Until mid-1982 the Mines Gaspe copper smelter consisted of a fluid bed roaster, a reverberatory furnace, two Peirce-Smith converters of which only one was blowing at any one time, anode casting facilities, and a single contact sulphuric acid plant treating both roaster and converter gases. Reduced concentrate supplies have led to the shutdown of the roaster and, as a result, it was necessary to adapt the converter and acid plant operation to the new operating mode: green concentrate smelting with resulting lower matte grades and acid plant treatment of off-gases from only one blowing converter. Therefore, modifications were carried out to existing equipment and methods of operation and control. This paper describes the result of work done to obtain steady, maximum strength, converter off-gas flow and an efficient acid plant operation. Topics covered include: optimization of converter operation, tightness of hood and off-gas ducting, improvements in acid plant/converter communications and modifications of acid plant operation and control to cope with the fluctuations in converter gas flowrates and strengths.

In this study, the slag forming route of the single-slag steel melting when smelting medium phosphorus hot metal was investigated. The CaO-SiO2-FeO-MgO-MnO-P2O5 as hexahydric slag system was adopted in the converter. The effect of slag composition on liquidus was calculated by FactSage, the isogram of phosphorus distribution ratio was calculated by using the regular ion solution model, combining these two tasks, the theoretical slag forming route was obtained. Through experiments, the actual melting point ofthe corresponding components on theoretical slag forming route was obtained, in this way, the theoretical slag forming route was confirmed. Then, the theoretical slag forming route was applied to industrial test in a 210t BOF. After using the new slag formating route, the dephosphorization ratio was increased 3.6% while the auxiliary materials consumption was reduced, and the cost of steelmaking was reduced.

Powder characteristics have a significant influence on selective laser melting (SLM) process. In this research, particle size, surface contour and the microstructure of IN718 powder used in SLM were tested, and the physical and chemical changes during heating process of the powder were investigated as well. The shape characteristic and fluid properties of IN718 powder were defined and measured. It is shows that most particles of IN718 powder exhibited nearly spherical shapes, and the particle size is about 22.95μm. On this basis, IN718 sample was fabricated by SLM process using the powder and the microstructure of the fabricated sample was investigated. The results indicated that the sample has a dense microstructure, no macro-defects but a few micropores and porosity. Compared with the powder, there was no new phase formed in the sample and melting point of the sample was little less than that of the powder.

"This paper gives the overview of different alternatives to recycle the following wastes: slag, dusts, wastes of electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) and auto shredder residues (ASR). Based on modified Bogue calculations, steelmaking slags were combined in order to produce a belite-rich clinker activated with sulphoaluminate. The EAF dusts containing significant amount of metals can be recycled in different ways: The carbothermal treatment and INTECT process are reported. The results obtained from the model of Auto Shredder Residue injection into blast furnace show that ASR can be used as reducing agent in the BF process if certain conditions are met. The particle size of this material must be controlled to ensure optimal gasification of the material in raceway. The non-ferrous contents may affect the pig iron quality, which is difficult to rectify at a later point. It seems the pyrolysis is the most attractive process to handle ASR. The BRGM flow sheet of WEEE treatment is also reported.I. Introduction The activities of human been may generate wastes and by their accumulation during several years, these wastes may have an impact on the environment and on the human health. These wastes can be generated in the forms of solid, liquid and gas. A variety of industrial wastes can be recycled for use as products. There are three ways in which industrial waste recycling occurs: at the facility itself (on-site recycling), at commercial facilities that gather waste streams from several companies (off-site recycling), and at a company that uses as inputs in its production process the waste products of another company. The industries producing iron and steel may generate different solid wastes which are classified in three main categories: 1. Ferrous material (mainly dusts and sludges from gas cleaning), 2. Slags (these by-products are generated from different process stages), 3. Others by-products (including refractories and material generated from engineering activities). According to this review, the most quantity of the metallurgical wastes is deposed. Currently, the public opinion opposes the creation of new sites. This leads to the growth of the waste disposal costs. Such situation reduces the enterprise competitiveness and decreases their market share on regional and/or national and/or world scales. In these conditions, the economical activities can be decreased leading probably to social problems. The problem of wastes and/or by-products can be treated on three levels:"

It is recently recognized that the iron reduction and melting as well as the slag separation of a composite of granular iron ore and coal are completed in a very short period of about IO minutes when the composite is rapidly heated up to approximately 1673K. These phenomena are expected to be applied to a new iron-making process. The mechanism of iron ore reduction and iron-slag separation during rapid heating has not yet been revealed and the fundamental research has just started. Carburization of the reduced iron is regarded as one of the most important steps in this process. In the present work, the composite was prepared from four kinds of coal or graphite as a carbon source and electrolytic iron powder as a completely reduced iron ore. The temperature at which the liquid formation and iron carburization occurred was monitored. Direct observation of smelting reduction behavior was made by a confocal laser-scanning microscope combined with the infrared image-heating furnace to clarify the effect of molten ash on iron carburization. It was found that the meltdown temperature of composite became lower as the melting temperature of coal ash decreased. From the observed result, it was presumed that the liquid slag would act as an important media for the carbon transfer from coal to iron. The carburization mechanism during the smelting reduction was estimated as follows. When slag containing iron oxide melted down and contacted carbon, iron oxide in the slag was reduced and the formation of the metallic iron particle as well as the its carburization occurred simultaneously at the slag-carbon interface. Carburized iron particle was carried from slag- carbon to slag-iron interfaces due to the slag convection flow caused by the difference of the interfacial tension between the carbon-slag and iron-slag interfaces. Carburization of reduced iron could proceed with a repeat of the above-mentioned process.

Copper Refineries Ltd. (CRL), Townsville is Australia's largest producer and exporter of refined copper cathode. This status has been maintained by the implementation of a significant capital works program that increased the production capacity to 270,000 t/y by June 1999. In 1979, CRL was the first in the world to commission the ISA Process Technology which has now been marketed to 47 licensees worldwide. The new tankhouse design has focused particular attention on customer requirements, operational improvements, materials handling and equipment modernisation. Equipment which has been upgraded includes cranes, anode preparation, cathode stripping and scrap washing machines along with the total replacement of the electrolyte and electrical reticulation systems. Side stream electrolyte filtration has been introduced. Improvements to electrode alignment afforded by the conversion to polymer concrete cells, precise electrode location, and the upgrade of the electrode handling machines will ensure that CRL. continues to be one of the world's major quality copper cathode producers.

"Various theoretical and experimental techniques used to search and develop new metal hydride systems suitable for hydrogen storage are described. The main theoretical technique under study makes the use of electronic structure of the candidate materials. Microstructural characterization techniques like transmission electron microscopy are being used to study the hydride formation. Novel processing techniques for material preparation such as those needed to produce thin films or amorphous phases are also being utilized. The techniques are illustrated with results from Pd, FeTi and Mg2Ni systems.IntroductionOf the four methods of hydrogen storage, compressed gas, cryogenic liquid, metal hydrides, and gas-solid adsorption, the metal hydride storage method is more attractive from the point of view of high volumetric density and safety. Compressed gas storage has disadvantages of extreme pressure, weight, and volume requirements, whereas storage of hydrogen as cryogenic liquid is unattractive due to the requirements of extremely low temperatures and high consumption of primary energy. Moreover, the number hydrogen atoms present in a volume of 10- 22 Cm3 (nH) in liquid hydrogen state (- 20K) is 4.2 whereas number of hydrogen atoms that can be accommodated in a free volume of 10-22 cm3 of various hydrides are as follows: LiH--5.9, TiH2--9.2, ZrH2--9.2, VH2--l0.2. High hydrogen concentration is usually associated with a large H/Metal atomic ratio but is also a function of structure."

Since the last survey of lead smelters in 1987, the lead industry has experienced many changes. Technological innovations, in combination with a dramatic shift in the market structure as well as more stringent government regulations, caused major upheavals in many different areas. Therefore, a new survey was performed to review the progress in the technology of lead recovery over the least decade. The newly conducted survey reflects all current phases of the world's primary lead production, from charge preparation to refined metal shipment. It was prepared by sending questionnaires to individual companies, and the detailed statistical data of this survey are presented. In considering the data developed from the survey, it should be recognized that the primary lead industry is at a crossroad where novel technologies will gradually substitute the sinter machine - blast furnace operation in the new millennium.

Ferrous calcium silicate slags are potentially important for future practice in copper converting operations and processes and can be described by the ?Cu2O?-FeO-Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 system. Despite its industrial importance the phase equilibria in this system have not been fully investigated. Characterization of this slag system is necessary to improve the design and optimization parameters of new processes, including fluxing and operating temperatures. Experimental methods have been developed to investigate the phase equilibria of these slags at copper saturation and without copper. This technique involved equilibration of samples at a fixed oxygen partial pressure, rapid quenching, and analysis of the compositions of phases using electron probe x-ray microanalysis (EPMA). Liquidus and solidus data are reported for the primary phase fields of spinel, wollastonite and tridymite at 1250oC and an oxygen partial pressure of 10-6atm. The resulting data has been used to construct liquidus isotherms in the ?FeO?-CaO-SiO2 system both in equilibrium with and without molten copper. The experimental results were compared with the predictions of a thermodynamic computer package utilizing a self consistent thermodynamic database. The predictions of the model were in good agreement with the experimental isotherms when projected onto the FeO-CaO-SiO2 section, however the copper concentrations in the liquid phase at copper saturation were lower than predicted using the current database of the model.

Newmont Gold Company (NGC) located in Northeastern Nevada has been processing carbonaceous and sulfide refractory gold ores through a chlorination circuit prior to cyanidation. A "Flash Chlorination" pilot plant was installed in 1987 in an effort to obtain higher chlorine utilization efficiency and increase gold extraction. The Flash Chlorination process oxidizes organic carbon and sulfide sulfur. It also deactivates preg-robbing carbon, making the ore amenable to cyanidation. Significant recovery improvements were observed using this new process. This scheme has also been instrumental in the processing of higher than normal grade ores at economic chlorine levels. The Flash Chlorination pilot plant has been successfully treating carbonaceous ore on a production scale since April 1988. This paper summarizes laboratory and pilot plant optimization test work, using conventional and statistical methods.
