In this paper, an innovative concept in longwall tailgate support is discussed. This new concept utilizes a new high capacity roof truss system in lieu of conventional wooden crib block. The first field test was conducted at Bailey Mine and was very successful. Similar tests have been installed in other mines and seams. An extensive instrumentation plan was designed and implemented in the truss test area. The test data has shown that the dynamic roof truss system effectively controls the various abutment pressures caused by longwall mining thus maintaining a stable tailgate entry.

"Engineering practices have shown that the skip-fault longwall mining is frequently used when faults with offsets larger than 1 Om are present. Since the skip-fault longwall mining not only reduces the recovery rate of coal reserves, but also increases the cost due to developing another setup room on the opposite side of the fault and moves the longwall into it. The coal pillar so created induced residual stress in and thus affects the safe mining of adjacent coal seams. In order to investigate the influence on panel layout and retreat by a l 6.5m offset normal fault, the similar material simulation model was constructed based on the geological and engineering conditions of No.13 coal seam in the western district of Liuzhuang coal mine employing the down-dip longwall mining. The characteristics of deformation, movement and failure of the overlying strata and abutment pressure when the face cut through the hangingwall and footwall of a normal fault were obtained. There were significant differences between the hangingwall and footwall as conformed by the equilibrium structure model. The results showed that superposition of the tectonic stress from a normal fault of large offset and that induced by mining is one of key factors that lead the severe pressure difficult to control during panel retreating from the hangingwall to footwall. Accordingly, the technical solutions for a fully mechanized mining face directly cutting through the fault are presented and optimized, and the applications of the technical solution in Panels 171301and171303 of Liuzhuang mine enabled them to complete the mining safely and efficiently. INTRODUCTIONFaults have been one of the important technical factors in underground coal mining l1-2i. Engineering practice has shown that the methods of mining through the faults depend on the seam thickness, seam dip angle, offset of fault throw, equipment height, rock strength, and advancing direction l3-5l. In the fully-mechanized longwall mining, the face normally proceeds to cut through the fault directly if the offset of the fault less than 5m, and to skip Uump) the fault if the offset is larger than 5m. In the former case, the most important problem is to efficiently control or avoid roof fall accidents (i.e., crushing, falling, pushover, and rock burst). In the latter case, the most important problem is very expensive to drive a new setup room and move the face equipment to it. The skipped coal pillar may poses problems for mining in adjacent seams."

Information about geostructure for effective rock bolting must be obtained before setting the bolt into rock in a coal mine roadway. Especially, rock type variation and distribution of discontinuities such as layer boundaries, and separation of strata and cracks all represent indispensable knowledge. To achieve in-situ evaluation of roof rock, we developed an MWD (measurement while drilling) system using mechanical data from a drilling machine for rockbolt. System hardware detects torque, thrust, revolution, and stroke of the machine, and software analyzes the mechanical data log and displays locations of discontinuities using Neural Network techniques. Also, this system is able to estimate roof rock 3-D geostructure for varied rock types and discontinuity distribution in cases of a drill hole array arrangement in roof rock. We conducted a feasibility study for it using hydraulic drilling at roadways of the Taiheiyo Coal Mine, Japan. Simultaneously, some core drillings were also performed to confirm system analysis data. For core samples, distribution of cracks was observed and the borehole wall was investigated by OFS (optical fiber scope). Must discontinuity locations estimated from roof logging were conformed with data obtained from core inspection. However, the core sample contained a number of cracks which were not found in the mechanical data log. This indicates that additional cracks were generated during and/or after core drilling by the influence of rotational force of the machine and water supply. Furthermore, in comparison with the OFS image, resolution of the discontinuity's log estimated by this system was clarified; that is, it is difficult to detect small size cracks (hairline cracks) from a mechanical data log and the core inspection by OFS. This paper outlines the new hardware system for hydraulic drilling machine and compares the discontinuity map obtained from the software system with drilling core inspection.

A low cost methodology that allows the determination of in- situ stress using oriented core specimens has been investigated. The technique can be used to determine the stresses during the early stages of a project, even in undeveloped areas of a mine. The research aim was to compare the experimental results estimated by the AE and DRA methods to those estimated by conventional ANZI (Australia and New Zealand Inflatable) cell measurements. The studies have been focused on fill stress tensor determination from a single oriented cored rock. In all cases the rock core specimens recollected the in-situ stress reasonably well compared with the standard overcoring method.

The paper describes research undertaken on an ECSC/K HSE project which investigated several potential physical principles which might be harnessed to provide a non-intrusive means of determining the extent of failure in the near roof of mine roadways and tested the most promising in the laboratory and in the field. It was concluded that the principles which warranted further development were thermal response and laser vibration measurement. In the latter case there is a need to develop an efficient means of imparting energy to the seam to induce sufficient vibration. A new, SIMRAC funded Project will progress work in the field of thermal response.

Through extensive practical experience and multiple studies, tensioned roof control systems have proven beneficial in difficult mining conditions. Due to increased mining of less desirable seams, tensioned roof control systems have claimed a progressively larger share of the total number of roof bolts installed in the US coal industry. Each tensioned roof control system has its benefits, but also has problems concerning cost, cycle time, stress concentration, load retention, and protrusion into the mine opening. For example, resin-assisted mechanically anchored bolts (also known as resin point anchor bolts) have a fast cycle time and the potential for high tension loading, but the stress from the mechanical shell is concentrated in a small area and can create concerns with certain roof structures (Zhang and Peng, 2001). Resin point anchor bolts can be difficult to fully grout. The cost of resin point anchor bolts can be an issue; a two-piece resin point anchor bolt has a large number of parts (10) and manufacturing steps (9), adding to its higher cost. Tension rebar bolts can achieve high loads and are easier to fully grout but have longer cycle times. In addition, a high percentage of the installed load can ?bleed off? if the resin mixing time or the ?hold time? before tensioning is short-circuited. Tension rebar bolts can be notorious for protruding into the mine opening, creating an obstruction for man and machine (Figure 1), in particular, with reduced mining heights. A new tensioned roof control system has been developed that doesn?t have moving parts, is cost effective, provides fast cycle times, has a low profile, and is simple t install.

A new monitoring device called SAFEBOLT (Stress And Force Evaluator in Bolts) has been recently developed. The device SAFEBOLT, essentially replaces the load cell, it permits the monitoring of bolt axial load from the time of its installation underground. The SAFEBOLT system consists of a portable readout unit, connecting cable and the SAFEBOLT device, which is installed in the bolt head. SAFEBOLT can be installed on any industry standard rockbolt. No special installation method is required; the conventional method of bolt installation by the stoper or roofbolter remains unchanged. The device is completely encapsulated in the bolt head, which makes it resistant to corrosion, rugged, and free of any electrical wires. Pilot tests at three underground Quebec mines were carried out and helped improve the initial design of the device connector. The paper reports on two of such pilot tests.

A longwall coal mine in Appalachia about 1,500 ft deep encountered a fault while developing a new longwall panel. The fault extended from mining depth to the surface near a secondary road and drainage. The fault was located inside the anticipated angle of draw within the mined panel and gob. The fault extended vertically out and up, away from the panel, caved zone, and gob at nearly the angle of draw: the fault very nearly following the angle of draw. It was initially thought that "fault reactivation" could possibly occur. Fault reactivation is the phenomenon of having mining subsidence localized along a fault leading to a "reactivation" of the fault and shearing and displacement along the fault. Such fault reactivation would disrupt and deform the fault plane beyond the normal angle of influence of the subsidence trough, and may provide a conduit for any ground and surface waters to reach the mine. We contacted all operators of longwall mines in Appalachia to determine if any Appalachian longwall mines had ever experienced fault reactivation, and teamed that none had experienced the phenomenon. After studies of possible water intrusion quantities and rates based upon in-fault pump tests, which indicated that water intrusion rates should be manageable, and the prior experience that faults in this particular area were usually barriers to water flow, mining proceeded with caution and monitoring. Mining was successful with no noticeable increase in water inflow rates, and no measurable off-setting of the fault exposure on the surface. It can be concluded that the fault did not reactivate due to its relationship to the mining sequence.

A chance detection of a seismic event of unexplained origin in the mining district of Appin in New South Wales. Australia, led to a detailed investigation of recording and analyzing seismic events occurring in the area. Multiple events were recorded each day on the seismometer stations. The larger events were strong enough to be recorded on a number of stations spread out in the district. Background investigation of seismicity stimulated due to engineering activities revealed that similar cases of mining triggered seismicity have been reported previously from many mining districts around the world. If the tectonic stresses are close to failure in a region then a small perturbation of the stress state may lead to instability in the region which may manifest itself as seismicity. The parameters that control the occurrence of such siesmicity include tectonic stress magnitudes and orientations. geological weaknesses or structural features and the amount of stress contribution due to mining. This paper reports on the seismic investigative study conducted in the Appin area and considers its association with the geological layout of the region and the mining activity.

"The Broadmeadow punch longwall coal mine in Central Queensland Australia has experienced significant highwall movement associated with the effect of longwall subsidence when the longwalls approach their final position close to the open-cut highwall. In response to this movement, Broadmeadow employed two types of broadscale highwall monitoring (radar and laser scanners) to provide full coverage measurement throughout three consecutive longwalls approaching the highwall. This was to attain a better understanding of the mechanism causing the movement and potentially enable prediction of instability. Results from the monitoring found the highwall is displaced to magnitudes unlike those typically measured in open-cut mining and in direct contrast with typical longwall subsidence behaviour.This paper discusses the ground movements measured, monitoring methods used, safety measures established, as well as theorising the failure mechanism. Recommendations are made for mine and pit designs for future punch longwall layouts. The paper shows how the movements measured are more aligned to some measurements made during stream valley closure studies previously presented at the ICGCM and challenge the mechanisms suggested by previous literature.BACKGROUNDThe mining of longwalls under or adjacent to large voids (e.g., stream valleys, escarpments, or cliffs) is commonly associated with heavily vegetated or steep surface areas. In areas of extreme topographic variance, access to traditional survey pegs and stations or even new radar or laser technologies is limited. In addition, seldom have the longwall layouts aligned themselves parallel or perpendicular to the surface feature, making interpretation of any available surface movement data more complicated.The punch longwall layout (Figure 1) is also quite uncommon (only undertaken at a small number of longwall mines in Australia) but creates the perfect configuration to enable a somewhat controlled study of the effect of longwall subsidence on a steeply dipping surface feature (an un-vegetated, evenly excavated open-cut highwall). The relatively recently developed radar and laser scanning technology has also enabled near continuous, real-time, sub-millimetre monitoring of a full 500m wide x 100m high highwall. Because the punch longwall enables access and a clear view, the technology could be easily deployed as compared to the highly vegetated and variable topography of stream valleys."

Compared to the rocks encountered in, say, metalliferous mining or tunnel drivage in igneous and metamorphic rocks, the strata associated with the coal measures are relatively soft. If excavations are made at depths greater than one or two hundred metres, zones of fractured or yielded rock develop around the openings. The stress which can be taken by yielded rock at the boundary of an opening is low, but because of the friction present between the fragments or particles, the sustainable stress rises rapidly with distance from the opening until sufficient confinement has been developed to prevent failure of the rock in the first place. Thereafter the laws of elasticity will apply and increasing distance will reduce the stress field until conditions consistent with the cover load are reached. For rocks which maintain their elastic condition right to the edge of an opening, finite element analysis and similar techniques have proved successful in determining the distribution of stress around the opening. This approach, however, is not successful when a yield zone is introduced between the elastic zone and the opening. Nevertheless, some estimate is required if help is to be given in the siting of roadways and in the determination of adequate pillar sizes. This matter is of particular importance in the planning of new mines especially if retreat faces are involved, as extensive roadway drivage must be planned and executed before experience of the effects of face extraction is gained. In 1977, the author published [I] a method based on 'stress balance'. The total aggregate downward load over a large area will remain that of the cover load even after part of the coal seam has been removed. Any rise in stress in ribsides and pillars must be offset by an equivalent stress reduction across roadways and other areas of extraction, and vice versa. Knowledge of one can lead to an estimate of the other, provided the general form of the stress distribution can be postulated. It is the object of this paper to revue the method in more detail and to give further examples of its successful application.

Roof fall risk is a common problem in coal mines, and it is generally unpredictable due to variability in geological and mining parameters. In this study, a new fuzzy logic model was developed to predict roof fall rate in coal mines. Parameters such as coal mine roof rating (CMRR), primary roof support (PRSUP), intersection span, and depth of cover were considered as the model inputs. The model was developed based on experts? knowledge and also a database including about 109 datasets of roof performance from U.S. coal mines. Approximately 20% of these datasets were used to assess the performance of the fuzzy model. In each case, comparison between results from model and real roof fall rate showed that this model can predict roof fall rate to an acceptable extent.

Longwall mining produces surface subsidence basins that affect streams by water diminution and contamination. These effects can ultimately impair the biological character of the plants and animal communities living in the streams. The combination of flow, water quality, and ecological effects threaten the environmental sustainability of longwall mining and, ultimately its social acceptability. Pennsylvania has developed new standards, released in 2005 and implemented in 2007, to help protect the commonwealth?s valuable streams from the detrimental effects of subsidence. These standards are aimed at eliminating environmental problems and will therefore help to make underground bituminous coal mining more sustainable. The engineering solutions necessary to comply with these standards are fundamentally affected by the geologic nature of coal-bearing strata, the existing in-situ stress conditions, and the ability of selected species to survive and adapt to changes in their environment caused by longwall coal mining subsidence. Needless to say, geologists, biologists, and engineers are all playing a pivotal role in developing prevention controls and recovery measures necessary to protect streams and sustain underground coal mining. The challenges facing scientists and engineers in sustaining the development of underground coal mining in Pennsylvania are examined through case studies. These challenges all arise from the subsidence effects of longwall mining. The key effects of subsidence, discussed through case studies, are: a) tension cracks, b) springs in headwater stream areas, c) stream gradients and subsidence basins, and d) stream compression ruptures and horizontal stress. All of these potential threats demonstrate the need for high-level scientific knowledge and innovative engineering solutions. One could argue that Pennsylvania?s stringent stream protection standards put the coal mining industry at a competitive disadvantage compared to other coal producing states. It is equally likely that compliance with these standards help to mitigate the effect of subsidence, thereby helping the coal industry achieve a sustainable future.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued the research role of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines to develop techniques that will reduce the hazards in the mining work place associated with coal bumps. Current research focuses on both analyzing historical seismic data from bump-prone operations and utilizing a mine-wide seismic network to investigate the exact strata failure mechanics associated with bump-prone geology. The anticipated outcome of this research will be reduced bump incidences through advanced engineering concepts and designs which implement the new understanding of strata behavior. The analysis of the historic seismic data consists of correlating observed mining seismicity with the geologic and geometric parameters at the sites. The primary seismic parameters are the timing, location and magnitude of a recorded seismic event. These parameters are correlated with such mining parameters as: the overburden, the size of the immediate gob, the size of the district gob area, etc. This detailed analysis of historical seismic data has provided an informative quantifiable relationship between many of the specific mining parameters and the induced seismicity. The second aspect of the coal bump research is the instrumentation of an appropriate field site to determine the main roof, floor, and gob behavior associated with hump behavior. The chosen field site is a deep-cover longwall mine with competent geology in a historically bump-prone area. The primary field instrumentation is a three-dimensional, full-waveform, seismic array with both surface and underground sensors surrounding an active multi-panel district. The purpose of this seismic array is to determine the timing, the exact location, and the mechanism (tensile fracture, bedding plane slip. etc.) of the failure of the strata surrounding the active and multi¬panel gobs. The preliminary results presented in this paper help to define the strata failure areas around the longwall panel.

Total extraction mining of coal is being undertaken on a small scale by Anglo Coal South Africa. Longwall mining has been done in the group at New Denmark colliery since the 80s and recently the company started experimenting with pillar mining at Goedehoop colliery. Total extraction mining methods result in caving of the overburden strata that is often accompanied by displacement of air causing wind blasts. The windblasts can cause injuries to underground mining personnel, damage to mining equipment, and ventilation disruptions. Some incidents of windblast damage and injuries have been recorded at both New Denmark and Goedehoop Colliery that prompted mine management to experiment with the goaf warning device, an instrument developed by CSIR mining technology to give early warning of impending god. The initial version of the Goafwarn was originally developed to operate as a stand-alone unit, with LED lights mounted on the device that would flash if the unit was triggered'. That set up would be effective in small working areas where the flashing lights are visible to all workers. This requirement is more difficult to satisfy in longwall application of the unit where mining activities are spread over large linear distances of up to 250 m and the flashing lights would not be visible to all workers in the longwall face. It was also found that the single unit had limitations in distinguishing between man made vibrations and cracking in rockmass leading to an unacceptably high incidence of false alarms. The case studies describe the experiments that were carried out to ameliorate the two issues mentioned above through networking more than one unit. This was achieved through the development of radio communication from the warning devices to a central control (Trollex Data Acquisition Unit) from which the alarms are issued once the prescribed triggers are satisfied. The operating system was made up of 4 Goafwarn units installed 30 m apart with 2 in the tailgate and other 2 in the main gate. The alarm state was defined where 3 or more units were triggered simultaneously. The concept was applied successfully in real time during longwall mining, and management procedures have been developed to achieve safety through the system including switching off the shearer, and flicking the lights to warn people.

"Modified cable bolts are commonly used in underground mines due to their superior performance in preventing bed separation when compared with plain strands. To better test the axial performance of a wide range of cable bolts, a new Laboratory Short Encapsulation Pull Test (LSEPT) facility was developed. The facility simulates the interaction between cable bolts and surrounding rock mass, using artificial rock cylinders with a diameter of 300 mm in which the cable bolt is grouted. Furthermore, the joint where the load is applied is left unconstrained to allow shear slippage at the cable/grout or grout/ rock interface. Based on this apparatus, a series of pull tests were undertaken using the MW9 modified bulb cable bolt. Various parameters including embedment length, test material strength and borehole size were evaluated. It was found that within a limited range of 360 mm, there is a linear relationship between the maximum bearing capacity of the cable bolt and embedment length. Beyond 360 mm, the peak capacity continues to rise but with a much lower slope. When the MW9 cable bolt was grouted in a weak test material, failure always took place along the grout/ rock interface. Interestingly, increasing the borehole diameter from 42 mm to 52 mm in weak test material altered the failure mode from grout/rock interface to cable/grout interface and improved the performance in terms of both peak and residual capacity.INTRODUCTIONFully grouted cable bolts have been used in underground mining industry for many decades. Initially, plain cable bolts manufactured by winding seven flexible steel wires together were commonly used (Thorne and Muller, 1964). Laboratory and field tests lead to a better understanding of the transfer process between grouted cable bolts and the surrounding rock mass, which is beneficial to improve the reinforcing performance of cable bolts in engineering practice (Fuller and Cox, 1975; Cox and Fuller, 1977; Schmuck, 1979; Stillborg, 1984). Nevertheless, as in many cases the initial cable was sourced from discarded steel with a smooth surface along the strand, plain cable bolts did not always meet performance expectations (Windsor, 1992). Over time, it was realised that cable surface geometry plays an important role in determining anchorage performance. Consequently, modified forms of cable bolts were developed. For instance, twin-strands which were made by using spacers to combine two plain cables together improved anchorage capacity two-fold (Matthews, Tillmann and Worotnicki, 1983). However, this required a large borehole to be drilled. Epoxycoated strands had remarkable performance in practice but were difficult to install without damaging the epoxy layer (Dorsten, Hunt and Kent, 1984). In the 1990s, there was a rapid development in the cable bolt design. A typical example was birdcaged cable bolts. They were initially suggested by Hutchins et al. (1990) via unwrapping traditional seven-wire strands and generating a number of nodes together with antinodes along the strand. But it was difficult to make birdcaged cable bolts that could be coiled for transporting."

"Over the past 36 years, a great deal of information has been presented and discussed at the International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM). The topic of surface subsidence engineering has resonated throughout each of the 36 conferences, producing 155 related papers. These papers have come from many countries. The major focus has been underground coal, especially longwall mining, but hard rock mining has also received attention. This impressive collection of reports presents a unique opportunity to reflect on the progress made towards understanding subsidence basin characteristics and developing methods to predict and mitigate its impact.In the initial meetings, the focus was on measuring subsidence and developing prediction methods. As understanding increased, predictive methods were developed and tested, especially in North America, China, Australia, Europe, and India. Efforts were made to understand how structures, aquifers, and surface waters were impacted by the formation of subsidence basins. As time progressed, the number of papers dropped slightly and became more focused on site-specific conditions. Most recently, advanced monitoring techniques have revealed new information, spurring a resurgence in research activity. Another recent focus has been on anomalous horizontal deformations occurring in sites with significant relief. Several reports from Australia and one from the US have brought this issue to light. In closing, all of these surface subsidence engineering papers have chronicled the maturing of this most important topic and, in the process, highlighted the importance of the ICGCM in the evolution of our current state of practice.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this paper is to examine the role of ICGCM in 1) shaping our understanding of the mining induced subsidence phenomena, 2) developing tools to help predict its impact on the surface, and 3) evaluating controls to mitigate these impacts.This analysis involved the consideration of 155 papers available within the ICGCM conference proceedings and listed under the subsidence topic. Three of the papers where only available as abstracts and were not included in this analysis. Four other reports were focused on topics other than underground coal mining-induced subsidence issues and were also not included. It should also be noted that papers dealing with overburden behavior were not included in this analysis. As a result, 148 papers were reviewed and analyzed (Figure 1)."

The Powhatan No. 4 Mine is located in southeastern Ohio along the Ohio River in Monroe County. The mine produces approximately 3.2 million tons of steam coal annually from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam. The Pittsburgh No. 8 seam in this area dips to the southeast in varying amounts from 10-feet to 40-feet per mile. The seam is made up of a main bench coal (4' to 5f' ) containing several thin and variable partings and a rider ("roof") coal (0" to 18") which is separated from the main bench by a parting (0" to 18") that is reasonably consistent in occurrence and position. Strata overlying the seam varies from a bedded to nonbedded calcareous mudstone-claystone (6' to 12') in the north and east regions of the mine to a sandstone (Pittsburgh Sandstone C10' to 40'1 in the south and west regions. The Redstone Limestone (10' to 18' ) overlying the mudstone-claystone in the north and east thins and rises toward the area of sandstone deposition in the south and west. From its opening in April of 1971 until late 1981, primary roof support in the long-1 ived entries at Quarto Mining Company's Powhatan No. 4 Mine had been achieved with 8-foot and 10-foot. 518-inch mechanical roof bolts using a Single expansion shell. These bolts were installed so that the expansion shell achieved a competent anchorage in the limestone. However, as the mine developed westward, the limestone began to trend upward becoming inaccessible as an anchorage medium at the 8-foot and 10-foot horizons. Anchorage achieved in the underlying mudstone-claystone strata was failure-prone due to weathering (after exposure to air and moisture) and inconsistencies in the anchorage horizon, leading to an increase in the incidence of reportable roof falls at the mine. Responding to the threat to safety and productivity posed by the increase in roof falls. Mine Management through its Safety and Engineering Departments, sought solutions to the problem. In seeking a solution to the problem, the safest and en engineering groups examined the reportable roof falls to determine the cause of those failures. Their examination pinpointed two items which were found to be a common link in the majority of those falls; namely, anchor integrity and geologic trends. Analysis of the roof falls indicated that due to effects of air and moisture on the anchoraae zones in the mudstones and clay- itones, the integrity of the anchorage over time could not be maintained. Geologic trends noted included the upward trend of the -main limestone as mining progressed westward, inconsistencies in the amount of roof coal and draw slate in the immediate mine roof and increasing evidence of heavily slickensided immediate mine roof. In the absence of the protective barrier provided by the roof coal, the immediate strata and particularly the draw slate, is susceptible to deterioration due to the weathering effects of air and moisture and thus is prone to "eat out" around the roof bolts and cause roof falls. The presence of heavily slickensided roof creates a need for increased contact surface such as that provided by plank and header blocks to aid in holding up the roof and tends to make the behavior of such roof very unpredictable. Having determined the causes of the roof falls. Mine Management began to identify the kind of roof support which would best solve these problems, while at the same time providing the mine with a safe, cost effective and efficient roof support system. This paper will provide an analysis of how this decision was reached, the background that was researched to aid in forming the decision, the considerations that played key roles in the formulation of the plan, the mechanics of following through and implementing the new roof support system, and an assessment of the resultant gains in safety, productivity and improved costs derived from the implementation of the new roof support system.

BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal operates Dendrobium Mine in an area 10-20km west-northwest of Wollongong in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales, Australia. The mine recently completed longwall mining in Area 3A adjacent to an overhanging rock feature known as Sandy Creek Waterfall, which had been identified as a significant, and potentially sensitive natural surface feature of the environment. This waterfall lies within the Sydney drinking water catchment area, in a surface terrain of variable topography where non-conventional subsidence behaviour such as valley closure, and far-field horizontal movements are known to occur, over and above conventional subsidence responses to mining. As a part of the conditions of approval to mine, Illawarra Coal undertook to protect the waterfall and the section of Sandy Creek immediately upstream of the waterfall from the effects of longwall mining using an innovative management process and an array of very high resolution monitoring systems. This paper outlines the type of non-conventional subsidence effects that can occur; the range of different monitoring regimes adopted in response to such effects in order to develop an understanding of the valley closure phenomenon in proximity to the waterfall and provide suitable early warning data. The paper also describes the management processes that were adopted, incorporating the use of these monitoring regimes in order to successfully protect the waterfall from the valley closure effects of mining four adjacent longwall panels in close proximity to the waterfall while continuing to maximise recovery of the coal resource in the area. The management structure adopted involved a technical committee, a steering committee, and an external independent reviewer. The technical committee was responsible for design of the monitoring systems, interpretation of the results, and making timely recommendations to the company steering committee who were then able to make informed decisions on when to cease mining each adjacent panel. The steering committee comprised Illawarra Coal management and technical personnel. Although the steering committee took advice from the technical committee, all decisions relating to mining were made by the steering committee. An external reviewer was engaged by the steering committee at the end of each longwall panel to review the results, interpretation and management decisions. This management structure was effective in successfully protecting the very sensitive structure of Sandy Creek Waterfall from potential impacts of nearby mining in the midst of active ongoing natural erosion processes.

Excessive floor and side deformation are major problems in deep coal mine entries in Europe, and in particular in the UK where rockbolt support is used at depths of working of around 3000 ft. This has major economic and safety implications for the industry resulting in the potential for sidewall instability, disruption to mine infrastructure, (belt conveyors, floor mounted transport systems and powered supports), and the requirement to safely manage excavation of large quantities of floor material. European research aimed at improving deformation control is described. The outcomes include innovations in support systems, materials and installation practices, as well as better methods for predicting and monitoring deformation levels. As coal mines get deeper, some entry deformation is inevitable, and methods for mechanised removal of floor lift and repair of sidewalls have been developed to allow production to continue as mining clearances are re-established.
