The formation of petroleum is normally thought of as a geologically lengthy process, involving the accumulation of organic matter, its gradual burial, diagenetic breakdown via geochemical reactions, maturation, heating within a 75-150'C "oil window" induced by normal geothermal gradients in the subsiding basin, and slow product migration into structural traps (Tissot and Welte, 1984, Hunt, 1979). The entire process can take millions of years and, indeed, most oil reservoirs probably formed in this manner. How-ever, today in sedimented, submarine rift basins (Fig. 1), Cl to >C40 hydrocarbons with the chemical and physical properties of crude oil are forming in demonstrably much shorter time by rapid thermal maturation of immature organic matter in hydrothermal regimes that are unusually high for sedimentary basins (Brault and Simoneit, 1988a, b; Didyk and Simoneit, 1988; Kawka and Simoneit, 1987; Peter et al., 1988; Simoneit, 1983; 1984; 1985a,b; 1988; Simoneit et al., 1984; 1987; 1988).

The effect of oxygen partial pressure on the volatilization percentages of valuable metals from iron-rich pyrite cinder by chlorination-volatilization method using CaCl2 as chlorinating agent was investigated in this study. The volatile products were collected directly and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. It was found that there were CuCl2, CuCl, PbCl2, and ZnCl2 existed in the volatile products. Au and Pb volatilization percentages were almost not affected by oxygen partial pressure. Both Cu and Zn volatilization percentages were negatively correlated with oxygen partial pressure when CaCl2 dosage was no more than 4 wt%, and almost uncorrelated with oxygen partial pressure with a CaCl2 dosage of 6 wt%.

This paper describes a method to improve coal mine entry intersection design. The method considers the effect of in situ stresses, local geologic conditions, rock physical properties, and mining sequence. Development of the method is discussed, including the results of field instrumentation studies and numerical modeling investigations. Data required to evaluate the effects of roof span, mining sequence, entry orientation, and bolting patterns on intersection stability are also presented. Ground control studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in two underground mines in the Illinois Coal Basin have shown that in situ horizontal stresses and roof geology have a critical effect on intersection stability. Methods to reduce the adverse effects of these parameters are emphasized. Typical failure behavior associated with specific geologic and horizontal stress conditions is' presented to illustrate proposed control methods to alleviate adverse ground conditions.

This paper will deal with the type of rocks so called evaporites, which are sedimentary rocks produced by water evaporation from seas, lakes or marginal lagoons, in warm and arid climates. Salts derived from these deposits are precipitated according to their solubility; that is, the more soluble precipitates first, overlain by other sediments like silts, shales, limestones, sands, etc. The most common evaporites, according to their chemical composition, are : Chlorides Sulphates Carbonates Nitrates Borates Common salt, or halite, sulphates like anhydrite and gypsum, are the most important. Potassium chloride (silvite and carnalite) and potassium sulphate are of great commercial value.

Mining of a bedded barite deposit exposed highly pyritic siliceous sediments which have weathered and degraded subsurface and surface waters. The ph, sulfate, and total dissolved solids are the most seriously affected parameters. Several solutions were tried and eventually horizontal holes were drilled into the mine wall to draw down the water table and decrease the movement of groundwater through oxidizing zones opened up by the mining operation. Areas of surface disturbance were capped with layers of soil, bentonite, and gravel to decrease the infiltration of water into the disturbed areas. These actions have begun to decrease sulfate and total dissolved solids concentrations and increase ph values.

The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins: including the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State, and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of over 12,000 feet and vertical continuity in excess of 4,500 feet, along with mining widths from 5 to 50 feet, are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district and eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970’s. Open pit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines. Operations in the Berkeley pit were suspended in mid-1982 because of the rejection of high arsenic, copper concentrates at major smelting facilities throughout the world. Bulk mining of porphyry style mineralization in the Continental pit began in January 1980 to supplement copper production while stripping “C” pushback in the Berkeley pit. The Anaconda Smelter closed in September 1980. A molybdenum circuit was added to the Butte Concentrator in 1981 and mining continued in the Continental pit to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. A blend of Berkeley and Continental ores were processed to dilute penalty metals in the final concentrates marketed to toll smelters. All mining operations ceased mid-1983 when Anaconda closed the Continental pit and offered the property for sale. Montana Resources reopened the Continental pit in June 1986 to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. Operations were suspended mid-2000, because of exorbitantly high power prices, but resumed in November 2003 with rising metal prices. Bulk open pit mining of the early porphyry style mineralization has sustained production over the past twenty years and mining is expected to continue in the Continental pit with favorable prices. Future mining will eventually develop a 500 million-ton geologic resource incorporated in a supergene enrichment blanket situated between the Berkeley pit and the Continental pit. Grades in this enrichment blanket range in the neighborhood of 0.5% copper.

In 1985 the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conducted a study to evaluate the emerging selective agglomeration processes (Killmeyer, 1985). This paper covers a recent similar study evaluating an associated technology, the emerging advanced froth flotation processes. This study has goals similar to those of the 1985 study: to evaluate the emerging froth flotation technologies collectively and determine how far they have progressed in their ability to clean ultrafine coal, and to assess the differences among the participants. The major concern again in this study was not the level of development, nor the economics of each individual process but only the current technical performance.

Introduction Mechanical classifiers consist of a settling tank with parallel sides and a sloping bottom equipped with a mechanism which continuously agitates the pulp and removes the settled solids. The functions served by mechanical classifiers include the following: (1) allow the particles larger than the desired size to settle in the tank and provide an overflow product with a minimum of oversize particles, (2) produce an overflow product of sufficiently high solids content to meet the requirements of the subsequent processing steps, (3) agitate the pulp and permit separation of the entrapped undersize particles so they can report in the overflow product, and (4) drain and remove the underflow solids from the settling pool. Various types of mechanisms have been used to agitate the pulp and remove the settled solids, which include: (I) endless belt and chain drags, (2) reciprocating rakes, (3) helical flights mounted on a rotating shaft which extends through the settling pool, (4) helical flights inside of a rotating drum which contains the classifier pool, (5) troughed conveyor belts forming the settling pool in the concave curve of the belt closely following the tail pulley, and (6) low-speed impellers agitating the underflow settled in the apex of cone-type mechanical classifiers.23 The principal use of mechanical classifiers has been in closed¬-circuit wet grinding; however, this application has been widely displaced over the past few decades by the hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone installation, including its feed pump, offers lower capital costs and requires less floor space. Nominally it produces an overflow prod¬uct of higher solids content, compared with a mechanical classifier, for comparable classification size up to 400µm (35 mesh). However, these advantages of the hydrocyclone are being gained at the sacrifice of some of the advantages of the mechanical classifier. The mechanical classifier requires less power and has lower maintenance costs than the hydrocyclone and its feed pump. The underflow product from the mechanical classifier can have a higher solids content and contain less entrapped undersize particles than the comparable product from the hydrocyclone. Consequently, it is capable of operating at a higher classification efficiency. A reduced circulating load24, 25 results under these conditions in a closed-circuit grinding application. Other applications for mechanical classifiers include desliming, dewatering, and washing operations. Sand-slime separation may be achieved using one or more stages of mechanical classifiers. Typical applications would include washing and deslimining of concrete aggre¬gate or sand; glass sand; abrasives; oyster shells; phosphate rock; iron, nickel, and chromium ores; alumina; zeolites; solar salt; and precipitates from chemical processing. As an example for the latter, Bitzer26 recommended the use of mechanical classifiers for countercur¬rent cementation-in-pulp of copper from the leach liquor. Similarly, mechanical classifiers are used in uranium processing27 for separation of the barren sands from the pregnant leach solution. Depending on the particle size and the effectiveness of the sand¬slime separation, the sand product from mechanical classifiers may be drained to solids content approaching 84%. Thus, mechanical classifiers are frequently used as dewatering equipment for various applications, such as: 1) Make a product having suitable solids content for subsequent transport by belt conveyor. 2) Provide a drained product to reduce cost of drying. 3) Provide a drained, washed, heavy sand product for return to the circuit. 4) Recover fine values from dilute plant effluents from coal, sand, phosphate-rock, and iron-ore washing plants and from steel-mill flue¬dust scrubbers. 5) Drain residual reagents of a preceding process stage prior to conditioning with reagents of different characteristics, e.g., cationic¬anionic flotation of phosphate rock, iron ore, etc. Design and Operating Features The proper selection of mechanical classification equipment re¬quires that the properties of the solids and liquid are adequately de¬fined. The following descriptive information regarding the solids is desired: feed rate, chemical and physical composition, density, tem¬perature, size analysis, and desired separation size. For the liquid used, the following data would be needed: feed rate, density, viscosity, pH, and temperature. Settling Area. The pool area required to permit a particle larger than the separation size to settle depends on the density and shape of the particle and on the density and viscosity of the pulp within the classifier pool. These criteria of the solids and pulp determine the settling rate which, in turn, determines the settling area required. Determination of the settling rate by long-tube batch tests can be used to calculate the settling area. A theoretical approach for estimat¬ing the settling area requirements is discussed in Chapter 1, Classifica¬tion Theory. This procedure can be used when neither test data nor empirical data from similar operations are available. Data on settling-area requirements and settling rates have been compiled by the manufacturers of mechanical classifiers. The approxi¬mate settling area required for a particular separation size can be estimated by using the curve shown in Fig. 65. This curve applies for closed-circuit grinding applications. For dilute velocity classification in open circuit, desliming, the length of the overflow weir, W, multiplied by the weir's mean distance from the feed opening, E, is used as the design criterion, instead of the settling area, in sizing the classifier. The area requirements, W X E, for dilute velocity classification can be expressed in terms of volumetric flow, Q, and settling rate, Rs, as follows: W x E = Q/(18.06 Rs) where W and E are feet, Q is gallons per minute, and Rs is inches per second. Overflow Weir. The hydraulic head, and thus the velocity at which the overflow crests the overflow weir, is one of the factors controlling the particle size of classification. Consequently, the length of the overflow weir must be designed to provide the overflow velocity which allows the particles larger than the desired size of classification to settle in the working area of the pool. Gold continued to be the primary focus of minerals exploration worldwide during 1995. Other targets, though, included primary diamonds and base metals, especially copper deposits amenable to solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) processing. The discovery of nickel, copper and cobalt at Voisey Bay in Labrador, Canada was an unusual surprise. Meanwhile, exploration geochemistry continues to evolve to meet new challenges. The major event in this category during 1995 was the17th International Geochemical Exploration Symposium (IGES) held in Townsville, Queensland, Australia in May. The meeting was sponsored by the Association of Exploration Geochemists, which celebrated its 25thanniversary of service to the mineral industry, and the Economic Geology Research Unit of James Cook University, Townsville.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting core leaching experiments with sulfuric acid on oxide copper ores from the Cyprus Casa Grande and ASARCO Santa Cruz deposits in Arizona to further our understanding of the leaching process in supergene copper ores as it relates to in situ mining. Leach solutions from atacamite mineralization contained 5 to 30 g/l copper and few extraneous ions. Leachant from chrysocolla ores, with grades similar to the atacamite, contained 2 to 9 g/l copper and abundant extraneous ions. Quartz and K-feldspar had no impact on leach solution composition at any acid concentration (up to 40 g/l) while illite and sericite had minimal impact. Biotite, calcium-rich clay and limonite have a significant impact on solution chemistry when there is abundant free acid in solution. High acid concentrations increase acid consumption in ores with abundant biotite and limonite gangue. High acid concentrations can be used in ores with quartz, K-feldspar, and sericite gangues without increasing acid consumption per unit of copper removed.

Editor's Note: For purposes of uniformity throughout this book, Coal Preparation, 5th Edition, the editors have advocated the use of the U.S.A. Sieve Series of testing sieves (see Table 6-2) as the testing sieves of modem choice. The adoption and use of the U.S.A. Sieve Series and its forerunner, the Tyler Standard Screen Scale, has for over seventy-five years introduced uniformity into reports; has simplified the comparison of results; and has provided control for operation of modem coal preparation circuits. While a full explanation of the differences, and more importantly the similarities of these two measuring systems cannot be stated here, it is felt that a brief clarification of terms is in order. The difference between the U.S.A. Sieve Series and the Tyler Standard Screen Scale Sieve Series is the identification method. Tyler Screen Scale sieves are identified by mesh designation with the width of opening varying by the square root of two, or 1.414 times the width of opening in the previous sieve. The U.S.A. Sieves are identified by openings in millimeters or microns and also arbitrary numbers which do not necessarily mean the mesh count; this series uses width of opening variations in the order of approximately the ratio of the fourth root of two, or 1.189. Tyler Standard Screen Scale and U.S.A. Sieves can be used interchangeably, and to avoid confusion the nameplate of all Tyler Screen Scale sieves show the U.S.A. Number, while all U.S.A. Sieves show Tyler Screen Scale mesh equivalent numbers on the nameplate. INTRODUCTION Sizing is the process of separating mixed mineral particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles range between definite maximum and minimum sizes. This chapter applies the modem mechanical screen and the liquid-solid cyclone (hydrocyclone) to the process of sizing solid particles as applied to coal preparation. Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modem coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modem preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1. Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2. Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or for processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3. Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits.

The Los Bronces porphyry copper deposit is located in the high Andes of Central Chile. Ore is mined from several tourmaline breccias and from an earlier porphyry. After years of experience in the geostatistical estimation of reserves in different zones of the ore body, we believe that success lies in considering the evaluation as an integrated process beginning with the analyses of the drilling density and sampling methodology, ending with the critically important reconciliation between the estimated and the actually extracted ore, in general, when errors or differences occur, focus is centered in the calculation stages of geostatistics. However, this paper demonstrates that all the evaluation stages are equally important and require the direct and continuous geologic input to ensure the best possible estimate within the frame of the geologic constraints.

The metallurgical processes that are frequently applied today use strong solutions and are of alkaline, acidic, or organic nature. These play a very important part in recovery of values from many ores. These solutions are of such a chemical nature that they are generally corrosive, flammable, and contaminating. In most cases, they are highly dangerous to the environment. Within the extractive metallurgical industry, it is also very common to have to deal with the handling of contaminating solutions with a high content of cyanide, arsenic, mercury, lead, copper kerosene, acid and many other components whose temporary or permanent confinement within the process must be adequate and absolute.

Mining companies, as developers of natural resources, are being forced to deal with the potential long-term liabilities of past, present, and future mining operations. As discussed in a previous paper (Cobb, et al., 1987), these liabilities can include solid waste disposal corrective action programs (state or federal actions), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), (Superfund) (state or federal actions), or natural resource damage claims (typically filed by state agencies and provisions specified in CERCLA). These potential liabilities are very real, and should dramatically impact the way a company views its exploration and development programs, and operating mines.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the stability of the mass flow rates and average pellet size in the different streams of an industrial-scale balling circuit. The variables in this study include water content, drum speed and fresh feed rate. It was found that both the mass flow rates and pellet diameter are greatly disturbed when a change, positive or negative, in any of the variables takes place. For most of these disturbances to be damped don, a period of one hour or so is required. When a disturbance in the feed rate was made, the transient period extended to more than one and half hours (the duration of the experiment). It was observed that there is an interaction between the drum speed and moisture needed for producing an acceptable green ball product. The moisture content of the product pellets was found to be a function of the pellet size, with the larger pellets retaining a higher moisture content.

Iron, cobalt, and nickel in waste ferric chloride solutions were separated from each other by solvent extraction. The iron was extracted from the cobalt and nickel by the use of methyl isobutyl ketone, and then the cobalt was separated from the nickel by the use of a high-molecular-weight quaternary amine dissolved in a solvent of high aromatic content.

Recently developed organic binder systems have the advantage of eliminating bentonite contamination. This results in better chemically reactive taconite pellets. Both acid and fluxed pellets show increased R40 reducibilities, whereas mechanical and physical properties of the taconite pellets are not adversely affected. Blast furnace performance of these pellets is excellent, and substantial economic benefits are achieved.

At the Freeport Indonesia Grasberg Mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, a system of underground drainholes and surface drain wells have been designed and are currently under construction. The underground drainholes are located at elevations of approximately 9,600 feet and the surface drainwells located at elevations ranging between 12,500 and 13,000 feet. Together they will be used to drain the ground water contained within relatively incompetent rock. This drain system will allow for the successful dry mining of the open pit, and provide slope stability of the pit wall. The surface drain well network, when completed will allow for the draining of ground water to the Amole Drift where the underground drainholes are constructed.

One of the primary areas of computer application in mine ventilation has been the analysis of mine ventilation networks. A variety of network analyzers that are aimed toward the solution of flows in a given network has been developed. These programs typically use the Hardy Cross or other iterative algorithm for solution of any network, even those that are complex. The computer software has become more efficient and sophisticated over time and has thus been widely adopted for ventilation network analysis. One of the shortcomings of these programs is that they have been developed with the idea of analyzing the ventilation requirements at a single point in the lifetime of a mine. This provides the ventilation engineer with an important tool for analysis but falls somewhat short of providing a convenient means to economically com- pare alternative methods for ventilating a mine. The program described in this paper provides such a tool. The principal concepts that were necessary for the completion of a computer program that analyzes ventilation alternatives is the capability of efficiently determining the ventilation requirements at a variety of times during the lifetime of the ventilation system and some method of analyzing the costs of the alternatives on a realistic comparative basis. To accomplish this task, the authors began using Penn State's mine ventilation simulator designated as PSU/MVS, Didyk et al. (1977a, 1977b) and added the necessary additional software to accommodate the need for multi-period, time-dependent analysis of the net- work. The software was then tested on a coal mine ventilation problem with a 23-year life. The problem points out the value of such a program for ventilation analysis.

This paper describes the emergency water control measures used at Pegasus Gold's Zortman Landusky mine during the September 1986 flood. The amount of solution stored increased by approximately 78 165 m3 due to receiving 0.2134 m of rain in a 24 hour period. Three methods of water disposal will be discussed including continuous chlorination, batch chlorination, and reverse osmosis. A water management program will also be discussed.
