In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. The reclamation of surface land areas disturbed during the course of coal recovery became a major, universal consideration upon the implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This legislation not only established reclamation as an absolute requirement, but also presented guidelines for reclamation standards and required bond-posting procedures to assure completion of the reclamation process. The Office of Surface Mining was established to enforce the provisions of the Congressional mandate by promulgating specifically detailed regulations and supervising the State participation in this regulatory process. The major operational consequences of the reclamation-related provisions of the Act and the OSM regulations are the increased costs and complex procedures necessary to accommodate the regulatory authorities. It is anticipated that many of these costs and procedures have not been adequately evaluated by either the coal operators or the regulatory bodies. It is, therefore, necessary to proceed with an examination of the general reclamation processes, the effect of these processes on product costs, and the methods, if any, which may be utilized to minimize their impact on the overall operation.

As part of its goal of helping maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines is evaluating alternative technologies to treat oxidized taconites. Since process control is an essential element in the application of these process technologies, research was performed with a prototype monitoring system. A Californium-252 neutron source and a thermal neutron capture- gamma ray spectra analysis method was utilized to measure the amount of iron and the percent solids in the process slurries. The concentrate and tailing streams in a 410-kilogram-per-hour (900- pound-per-hour) pilot plant employing a selective flocculation and cationic flotation process were monitored. The results obtained showed that the thermal neutron capture-gamma ray reaction can be used to provide process control parameters.

INTRODUCTION Legend has it that when Isembard Kingdom Brunel was confronted with the cost and consequences of one of his bridges having failed, he responded cheerfully that the event had saved investors and taxpayers a fortune because it prevented him from repeating the same design at several other locations. To meet the demands of rejuvenating and expanding the transportation system in an era of industrial growth Brunel and his contemporaries introduced bold designs and many innovations. Great advances in design and construction techniques resulted, yet these too had their practical limits as the story tells. In the gold mining industry today we face the same challenge of expansion, yet designers must respond mindful of economic restraints. Is innovation the answer? It has two meanings; to bring in novelties and to make changes. Distinguishing between improvement and novelties, or simply recognizing the benefits and limitations of new ideas over proven technology is part of good design. This paper will illustrate the practical aspects of selecting appropriate solutions to a design problem by examining a variety of examples common throughout the industry. Since a variety of engineering disciplines contribute to the design of a gold processing plant, and each has some old wisdom to impart or new development to boast this paper is divided into the different areas of expertise involved.

"The early mining of iron ore in Minnesota was carried on with the most primitive kind of tools. The pioneers used only such equipment as could be packed from Duluth through one hundred miles of forest to the first mines on the Vermilion Range and the operations were carried on with picks, shovels, hand drills and wheelbarrows, the ore being hoisted in buckets with a horse winch and carted in horse drawn wagons to the stockpile. This was about the extent of the mechanical equipment of the Minnesota iron mines in the early eighties.As soon as a railroad was pushed through from Two Harbors to the Vermilion Range the equipment began to be improved upon; wood burning steam boilers were installed and small steam puffers displaced the horse-winches, wheelbarrows were aban¬doned and small cars were introduced. Hauling the hoisted ore in wagons was discontinued and trestles were built so that the ore could be stockpiled more cheaply through the use of cars and high piles. These same stockpiles were loaded by hand into the 10 and 15 ton capacity railroad ore cars.Within a few years a marked change took place—the hand drill gave place to the air drill, such as No. 3 Rands, Ingersolls, Sargents and some Sullivans. Tramming was done by mules, the ore hoisted in. self-dumping skips, hoisting engines were intro¬duced and it seemed as though mining as a business in Minnesota had come to stay. At this stage someone conceived the idea of making the stockpile floor about three feet above the top of the ore cars to facilitate the hand loading of stockpile ore for trans¬portation. This was done through the use of wheelbarrows at first and later by using I-ton cars running on tracks laid on the stockpile floor."

INTRODUCTION The problems involved with moving millions of tons of rock are being addressed by nationally recognized tunnel contractors who have converged in Chicago over the past 5 years. This wealth of expertise has been needed to meet the risk and challenge of constructing the world's largest network of underground tunnels which in turn has required a dramatic advance in the art and science of tunneling. These pioneers, through innovation, adaptation, and hard work, have eliminated the one major concern of The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago - how to move 8 million tons of rock. The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves 122 municipalities covering 866 square miles in Cook County, Illinois. Of these cities, towns, and villages, 53 have combined sewer systems. On an average of once every four days, these systems overflow about 4 million gallons of combined sewage and rainwater into the area's rivers and canals. The overflows occur at approximately 640 outfall locations of which 10% are owned by the MSDGC, with the remainder of the points belonging to various other municipal bodies. All those who own these "point" sources of pollution are in violation of Illinois State and Federal regulations. To enable its member municipalities to come into compliance with State and Federal law, the MSDGC is implementing its Tunnel And Reservoir Plan (TARP). TARP is a regional solution to the problem of combined sewer overflow in the metropolitan Chicago area. During the last few years high-tonnage plants have been designed with comminution circuits using semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), or both, followed by ball mills in different configurations. A strong interest in improved energy efficiency and reduction of carbon footprint, along with the recent launch of new high-capacity crushers and stirred grinding mills, has driven the industry to investigate the development of novel flowsheets. This paper presents work based on recent projects that include modeling and simulation of two innovative circuits recently considered for current projects. One circuit uses autogenous (AG) mills and parallel trains of crusher-HPGR and the other is a modified three-stage crushing circuit with the use of HPGRs and pebble mills. The paper indicates the potential savings in operating costs provided by the HPGR-pebble mill circuit when compared to a more conventional SAG-mill-based circuit.

Evaluation of the stability of a structure under given boundary conditions requires accurate knowledge of the state of stress as well as the mechanism of failure at the critical state of stress. This paper represents a part of the research done by N. K. Bohidar during 1965-1968 for his Ph. D. research in Mining Engineering at the University of Utah. It summarizes the determination of internal stress and failure phenomena around cylindrical openings in viscoelastic media subjected to lateral restraint and vertical uniaxial load. The conditions of lateral restraint and viscoelastic nature of the media represent conditions associated with subsurface openings in rocks. The financial assistance provided to the project from the University of Utah Research (Uniform School Fund), W. C. Browning Scholarship Fund, Earth Science Research Fund, and D. C. An attempt has been made to compile and code geologic data relating to twenty of the major porphyry copper districts of North America in such a manner as to permit the use of modern electronic digital computers to retrieve, compare, and build statistical mathematical models from the input. In the exploration process as part of his broader efforts to evaluate the potential of some prospective region, district, or ore body, the experienced geologist consciously or subconsciously compares and fits the observed geologic features to similar phenomena associated with known ore bodies with which he is acquainted. Thus an adequate conceptual "model" of the total geologic environment and type of ore body sought is an essential requirement for the successful exploration effort. Numerous such models of porphyry coppers already exist in the minds and notes of many experienced geologists today. These models are, of necessity, couched largely in qualitative terms and though they may be quite definite in the mind of the porphyry copper expert, the total concept of what constitutes a porphyry copper deposit and environment is difficult to convey in very precise terms. There probably is no such thing as a typical porphyry copper deposit. However, it is well understood that most of the deposits that have been studied have many geological characteristics in common. A logical question then might be: What characteristics are most common or how often do they occur in common, and what is their relationship to other common characteristics ?

"THE MICHIGAN COPPER DISTRICT.Location. The copper mines of Michigan are all in the north¬ern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeast¬erly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of.location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. This event is described as fol ,lows by Foster and Whitney : Location: As shown on the accompanying map, the Mar-quette district extends from the region of Marquette on Lake Superior westward for about forty miles. The main basin of the district is only about three to six miles wide, but outlying areas which are commonly regarded as belonging to the same mining unit, make the north and south dimension of the district about twenty miles. The most productive portion of the area is in the vicinity of Negaunee and Ishpeming, .about ten miles from Mar¬quette, but important mines are found also all along the range as far west as Michigamme and also to the south in the fold known as the Republic Trough. Comparatively recent developments indicate that important ore bodies have been developed in the outlying Swanzy district about eighteen Miles nearly due south of Marquette.The Marquette Iron District.History: The first discovery of iron ore in the Lake Supe¬rior region was probably that made in 1844 near the site of Ne-gaunee by the government surveying party in charge of William A. Burt, sent out under the direction of Douglass Houghton. This surveying party was using a solar compass, invented by Mr. Burt, and noticed variations in the direction of the magnetic needle at various times and places, but. on the 19th of September, while running the east line of Township 47 North, Range 27 West, the needle varied from its normal position until it stood nearly at right angles thereto."

Smart defense: that?s what the industry needs to play for the next four years, according to panelists at the 118th Annual Meeting of the Northwest Mining Association (NWMA), which met December 2-7 in Spokane, WA. The conference was well attended, with approximately 2,200 attendees, 244 booths in the two packed exhibition halls, and a rich offering of short courses, field trips, social events and technical sessions. Speakers at the packed legislative session articulated many of the frustrations felt by members of the mining community after the U.S. elections in November, and offered words of advice. Matthew Ellsworth, the new Government Affairs hire at NWMA, stated it best: ?Elections are like Christmas: you find out who?s naughty and nice ? and it?s always going to come again.?

Geologists searching for carbonate rocks suitable for chemical uses traditionally have relied on extensive laboratory testing in order to locate strata or zones that might be suitable for mining. However, when considering the significant time and costs involved in sampling and performing chemical analyses, any exploration technique whereby fewer samples and analyses are needed would be of great value. In other words, if the exploration geologist could "zero-in" on select areas, considerable time and money could be saved. In general, the major-element chemistry of carbonate rocks is determined by the abundance of the minerals present. CaO occurs with CO2 as the mineral calcite, which is the primary mineral comprising allochems, matrix and sparry cement; MgO is found in high-magnesium calcite (many calcite fossil species contain appreciable amounts of MgO in solid solution), dolomite, and chlorite; iron occurs in pyrite and in limonitic stylolites, as well as in chloritic and glauconitic clay minerals; materials containing abundant Si02 are microcrystalline quartz (chest) silt-sized quartz, and clay minerals; and Al203 is found primarily in illitic, kaolinitic, and chloritic clay minerals. The presence or absence of these minerals determines the chemical composition of the carbonate rooks.

One often sees in the papers, in these days of ecological consciousness, estimates of the quantity of land that has been "devasted," "ruined," or "destroyed," by surface or strip mining, especially for coal. One feels sure that coal miners must have been the first to discover the art of excavation and that the public didn't know of its existance until five or 10 years ago! Estimates of the acreage vary widely with most of them sounding somewhat unreal. One estimate of 175,000 acres in Alabama appeared in one newspaper article and the implication was that all of this was mining for coal. The question was raised anew last summer when the author began working on a land use estimate utilizing aerial photographs, a preliminary project to the Alabama Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) contract presently being fulfilled. One land use category was barren or waste land and aside from some sand beaches in the two coastal counties in Alabama, recently strip mined land constituted most of that category. It quickly became apparent that old stripping was very hard to detect so that estimates from aerial photographs are not accurate. With regard to relatively new stripping, a thin veneer of reflective dirt washed over the countryside may result in a considerable overestimate of the excavated area. Actually, there is a way to estimate the area excavated by strip mining using published Bureau of Mines figures. At least three sets of data are needed: (1) Coal production figures, (2) average thickness of coalbeds mined, and (3) an accurate recovery figure.

Salt from Great Salt Lake was probably used by the Native Americans prior to the Jim Bridger Expedition to the lake in 1824-25, and was used by the region's early explorers and trappers after that time. From the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in 1847, salt has been produced from Great Salt Lake, starting first with the collection of crude salt from along its shores, and later by boiling down the lake's brine to obtain crystalline salt. Since these early beginnings, salt production from the lake has become a substantial commercial enterprise. Since the early 1960s, research and development have led to the economic production of potassium sulfate, magnesium metal, chlorine gas, magnesium chloride products, and nutritional supplements. Many of the salt-production techniques and equipment that were developed prior to 1964 are still being used today. Sodium sulfate has been produced, but is no longer marketed. Morton Salt, Cargill Salt, and IMC Salt currently extract sodium chloride, which is precipitated during the early stages of evaporation when the brine concentration reaches saturation, or about 26 to 27 percent total dissolved solids. Magnesium Corporation of America produces magnesium metal and chlorine gas, and IMC Kalium Ogden Corporation produces potassium sulfate, as well as magnesium chloride brine and flake products. These salt, gaseous, and metallic products are processed from the sodium-chloride-saturated, high-magnesium-chloride brines, and from the potassium and magnesium salts that are precipitated from the lake brine after it has been further concentrated. One obstacle to salt production is the fluctuating level of Great Salt Lake. In 1983, the lake level began a dramatic rise from an elevation of 4,200 feet (1,280.16 m) to its historic high of 4.211.85 feet (1,283.77 m) in 1986-87 (uncorrected USGS provisional lake-level records). The State of Utah employed flood-control measures, including breaching the Southern Pacific Railroad causeway in 1984, and pumping lake water to a shallow basin west of the lake in 1987. During the high-water years, the lake's mineral-extraction industries faced many challenges including the need to raise dikes to prevent flooding of facilities, broken dikes which resulted in the inundation of solar ponds, and dealing with the lake's greatly reduced brine salinities which resulted in lower annual salt and concentrated-brine production. The years following the record-high lake levels have been a time of adaptation, innovation, and change for Great Salt Lake industries. After its solar ponds were flooded in 1986, AMAX, Inc. built a new solar-pond complex near Knolls, and used the concentrated brines from the West Pond, generated by the State's West Desert Pumping Project. Great Salt Lake Minerals built a 21-mile-long (33.8 km) open, underwater canal, called the Behrens Trench, to convey concentrated brines from a new, remote solar pond on the west side of the lake to the east side of the lake, to help increase its production of sulfate-of-potash. There were also numerous changes in corporate ownership and production-facility locations.

Electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are being developed by mining vehicle manufacturers as a replacement for diesel-powered vehicles. Explosion-proof (XP) enclosures are frequently employed to enclose electrical ignition sources in gaseous underground mines to prevent the spread of an internal methane-air explosion to a nearby explosive atmosphere. Due to thermal runaway (TR), Li-ion batteries have the potential to cause pressurized explosions in an enclosed structure. Past research has shown the potential for well-confined Li-ion cell TR to drive pressures beyond the conventional pressure specification for XP enclosures. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used an Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC) to induce thermal runaway of Lithium Titanate or Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO) type 18650 cells enclosed within containers with various volumes and found an inverse power relationship between the TR pressure and available free space. The results were similar in magnitude to that of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, which were used in prior testing. Temperatures, gas amounts, and TR pressure-rise rates were also recorded. The data indicate that with enough free space, the pressures can be lowered below the conventional pressure specification for XP enclosures.

The asbestifom habit is most commonly developed in certain amphiboles and chrysotile, but other minerals may also crystallize with this unususual habit, The habit may be characterized by 1) a fibril structure, single or twinned crystals of very small widths (generally less than 0.5 inn) which have gram with a common fiber axis direction but which are disoriented in the other crystallographic directions, 2) anomalous optical properties, primarily parallel extinction, 3) unusual tensile strength, 4) high aspect ratio, and 5) flexibility. In addition, there is evidence to indicate that some amphibole asbestos may have unusual surface properties.

Roping in hydrocyclones is a well-known phenomenon in mining and mineral industries which put serious restrictions on their continuous and maintenance free operation. Roping is mostly observed in association with high underflow solid concentrations which can be attributed to higher fraction of solids reporting to the underflow or the feed solid concentration itself being higher. This paper proposes a newly designed spigot with a truncated conical geometry which can allow for a rope-free discharge at higher feed solid concentrations. The experimental observations revealed that in the operation of a 50.8-mm-diameter hydrocyclone, roping ensued at 10% to 12.5% (wt%) feed solid concentration depending on feed inlet pressure for the cylindrical spigot, whereas with the modified spigot, rope free discharge was attained even at 25% (wt%) feed solid concentration.

Bauxite, dolomite, and magnesite are natural occurring minerals that are used extensively in the manufacture of refractory products. In addition, magnesia produced from seawater or brine finds its way into the production of refractories. All of these materials must be processed at high temperatures, 1500°C to 2200°C, to produce an intermediate raw material (refractory grain) , which can then be used in the final manufacture of refractory bricks and shapes. During the last 20 years, the major supply of refractory bauxite has been from Guyana, and at times the annual production has ranged up to 1,000,000 tons per year. More recently, China has become a major source of refractory grade bauxite by supplying over 300,000 TPY. Other sources of bauxite in lesser quantities have been Surinam, Brazil, and the U.S.A. During 1980, the estimated available world tonnage amounted to slightly more than 1,300,000 tons. The bulk of this material has been calcined in rotary kilns except for some of the Chinese production, which was treated in shaft kilns. Recent work has indicated that an excellent product can be produced in the Nichols Shaft Kiln using much less fuel than the conventional rotary kiln. Details of the Nichols Shaft Kiln will be provided later in this paper.

Wollastonite is a little known industrial mineral of the silicate group. The largest and purest known deposit in the free world is being mined and beneficiated in Millsboro, New York by NYCO, A Division of Processed Minerals Incorporated. The associated garnet and diopside are separated from the wollastonite using dry high intensity magnetic separators. Beneficiated wollastonite is used extensively as an additive and filler in the ceramic, paint, refractory, and wallboard industries. Wollastonite acts as a functional filler due to its unique chemistry and physical acicularity.

Herrenknecht has collected many experiences in the automation process of carousel systems for segment production, implemented several robot systems and launched new artificial intelligence-based camera system supporting the production team in the quality control This paper is a follow up of the presentation on Automation in Segment Production held in 2021 at the RETC.
