During the past two decades, the emphasis on technological advances in US underground coal mining has focused on longwall mining. But there also has been a steady, although less spectacular, advance in the state-of-the-art in room-and-pillar mining. This has been stimulated by the successes of longwall mining in mine cost reduction, increased availability and improvements in haulage infrastructure, such as conveyor belt haulage. In addition, changes in management practices, such as nine- or 10-hour shifts, and marketing pressures have resulted in changes in the use of equipment. The net result of these changes has been the creation of modern room-and-pillar operations where average production levels currently exceed those considered very good 20 years ago. In fact, current production levels considered outstanding were considered unattainable two decades ago.

Pará Pigmentos S.A. (PPSA) is an association between the Brazilian companies CVRD and CADAM, Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan, and the IFC (World Bank) created in 1992 in order to recover kaolin from Rio Capim deposit, northern Brazil. Commercial production at PPSA started in August 1996 using a process comprising mining and beneficiation at the mine site, pumping through a pipeline and drying/loading at the port site on the Amazon river estuary. Presently, all PPSA production is concentrated on 82% <2um, high-brightness coating clay shipped in bulk. In this paper, a detailed description of the development of PPSA beneficiation process is presented. The results of laboratory and pilot plant studies under- taken to develop alternative grades of clay, such as delaminated and calcined kaolins, are also discussed.

Our portion of this afternoon’s session is dedicated to the operation of automatic process control associated with small to medium size primary or SAG milling circuits. In recognition of the subject matter of this symposium, specifically precious metals, our historical reference is Rosario Dominicanna in the Dominican Republic, one of the largest gold producers in the Western Hemisphere. Plus a backward glance to review very briefly the initial performance of the big primary mills at Island Copper in British Columbia and Pima IV in Arizona. We will then get to the subject at hand with a discussion of a retrofit control logic recently installed on a 5000 hp primary mill. The focus of this review is the simple, inexpensive, and cost effective character of this retrofit installation.

The use of electrokinetic or zeta-potential phenomena in studies of the properties of mineral sulphides has increased greatly over recent years. This review aims to examine and discuss the body of literature on the subject of electrokinetic properties of sulphides in a comprehensive and critical manner. Although the review covers the period from 1925 to 1975, it is only in the past ten years that researchers have been fully aware of the implications and problems of chemical reactions, notably oxidation and precipitation reactions, on the surface properties of sulphide minerals. These papers are discussed in more detail than the earlier publications. A table containing a list of determinations of iso-electric- points and points-of-zero-charge of mineral sulphides, and the methods employed in obtaining these results, is presented.

Computer-based dispatching in open-pit truck haulage operations yields many benefits of current interest to mine management. The key tangible benefit is a substantial productivity increase with a given fleet of equipment or, alternately, a significant reduction in equipment required to meet production quotas. Other tangible benefits in mines with concurrent operating objectives include minimizing rehandle, meeting several blending constraints simultaneously, and ensuring a target plant feed rate. Intangible benefits include production forecasting, performance comparisons of trucks or shovels of different manufacture, and extensive on-line report generation. Recent advances in mini- and micro-computer hardware and software and solid state electronics permit design and implementation of system features not feasible a few years ago. This paper discusses system aspects with emphasis on dispatching algorithms needed to meet concurrent objectives.

Though installations of main mine fans vary widely, the commonest installation is of a surface exhaust fan connected to an upcast shaft some distance below its collar by a horizontal fan drift bending sharply. downwards near its junction with the shaft. The junction of the fan drift with the shaft often causes considerable shock pressure loss if not properly designed. In one of the major coal mines in India circulating 180 m3/s of air through the mine a pressure drop of 229 Pa out of the total fan pressure of 568 Pa occurred at this junction while in a smaller gold mine circulating 9.4 m3/s it was 147 Pa out of a fan-drift pressure of 382 Pa. With larger mines circulating larger volumes of air, ill designed fan drifts can lead to considerable wastage of the power of ventilation. Shock loss at the junction of fan drifts with exhaust shafts depends on (1) the angle of deflection of the bend, (2) sharpness of the corners (both inner and outer) at the junction, (3) the degree of contraction of the flow-stream which depends on the cross- sectional area ratio of the shaft and the fan drift as well as the amount of leakage through the shaft collar. It must be noted here that the friction pressure loss in the bend is negligible compared to the shock pressure loss.

Prologue Antoine Marc Gaudin (Fig. 1) was truly a giant in the field of mineral processing, and his shadow is still cast long on our profession. "Tony," as his students affectionately called him (but never to his face), came to the United States in 1917 and enrolled at Columbia University where he studied under Professor Arthur F. Taggart. Later, as a lecturer, he wrote his classic comminution paper (Gaudin, 1926). This important work led to his appointment as an associate professor at The University of Utah, where he conducted highly original work on flotation fundamentals that is still widely quoted today (Gaudin et al., 1928-30). In 1929, he was appointed Research Professor of Ore Dressing at the Montana School of Mines in Butte. Shortly thereafter, he published his first book, Flotation (Gaudin, 1932). Because Gaudin could so quickly cut through the fog to get to the essence of a problem, this is still a valuable reference book. It is a valued part of my personal library, and I consult it frequently. Over the next decade, he conducted an outstanding graduate research program at Butte, but, more importantly, he honed his undergraduate lectures and produced the century&apos;s outstanding text in the field, Elements of Mineral Dressing (Gaudin, 1939). SUMMARY La Granja copper deposit, in terms of volume, is among the five largest deposits in the world and represents reserves of three thousand million tones. The field consists of a 40 m. thick layer of copper lying over the secondary ore and further down the primary copper. The flotation process has indicated a recovery rate of 88 to 90 percent and concentrates of 27 to 32 percent of copper. The acid leaching process of low grade ore produces financially acceptable results. To carry out the project, it is necessary to build long distance pipelines and a port. Both the Feasibility Study and the Environmental Impact Study on the project have been approved by the Peruvian government. INTRODUCTION La Granja is located in the district of Querecoto, province of Chota, in the department of Cajamarca, in the Northwest of the country (Figure 1). Geographically it is situated on the eastern slopes of the Andean mountains at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,700 m.a.s.1. (Figure 1). The site is an 8 hour car ride from the city of Chiclayo, capital of the department. The first 60 km. are over a paved road and the remaining distance is over a narrow hard dirt road. The copper porphyry of La Granja was discovered between 1969 to 1971 during some geochemical prospecting activities carried out by the State mining institution, Ingeomin (currently Ingemmet). From 1978 to 1982, Ingemmet continued with its geochemical and geophysical studies supported by a German technical assistance program. A total of 19 bore- holes were drilled (5,814 m.) and a 90 m. long tunnel made. This study calculated reserves of 175 million MT. In 1993, Minero Peru drew up a technical-financial study based on the above studies and proposed a 12 year extraction operating program: 20,000 MT daily using the leaching process, followed by 13 years of operation using the flotation process with the same daily volumes. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Since the beginning of operations, with the exception of a small tonnage mined by slushing, ore extraction has been by full gravity caving. Formerly, a checkerboard sequence of block undercutting was followed with the even-numbered blocks in one panel and the odd¬numbered blocks in the adjacent panel being mined. As these blocks were depleted, the intermediate or pillar blocks were mined (Fig. 1). Following this checker¬board, the mining sequence went through a number of changes, finally evolving into diagonal retreat panel cav¬ing by blocks (Fig. 2). The numbers in Fig. 2 indicate the sequence in which blocks were undercut. Gaps in the numbering sequence indicate undercutting on the level outside the illustrated area. Geology The ore body is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite mineralization disseminated throughout structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rocks. It takes the shape of a gently dipping elliptical cylinder consisting of an ore shell of variable thickness surrounding an interior waste core. Major and minor axes of the mineralized cylinder are 1524 m (5000 ft) and 762 m (2500 ft), respectively, and length approximates 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore is sufficiently fractured to break readily into medium-coarse size. The igneous rock complex containing the ore body is covered by a wedge-shaped blanket of Tertiary con¬glomerate which was brought into place by faulting along the major regional structure of the San Manuel fault. Thickness of the conglomerate cap varies from only 9 m (30 ft) at the east end of the ore body to more than 610 m (2000 ft) at the west. Structurally, the con¬glomerate is much more competent than the igneous host rocks and, when caving, it breaks into massive chunks. Conglomerate boulders seen in drawpoints underground are very coarse. The total rock column over the initial mining area of the 1415 grizzly level was 354 m (1160 ft) of which 122 m (400 ft) was ore, 79 m (260 ft) was leached igneous capping, and 152 m (500 ft) was conglomerate above the San Manuel fault. Diamond Drilling: From 4572 to 7620 m (15,000 to 25,000 ft) are drilled annually from underground workings to delineate the ore body. MINE DEVELOPMENT Haulage Level In the south or main ore body (see Figs. 3-6), with the exception of the draw and transfer raises, all the extraction openings are concreted (Seaney and Tobie, 1965). The haulage panel drifts, which are 18 m (60 ft) below the grizzly drifts, are first driven with pre¬concrete ground support. The drift, which has an arched section, then is concreted using mobile collapsible steel tunnel forms. The haulage drifts leading from the pan¬els to the hoisting shafts are not concreted. After the panel drifts have been concreted, the raise stations from which transfer raises will be driven are constructed and the raise-station ore-drawing chute is installed. The chute is prefabricated of A-36 steel with undercut guillo¬tine gates made of abrasion-resistant 2.5-cm (1-in.) steel plate powered by 20-cm (8-in.) air cylinder installed on each side of the raise station. Transfer Raises The transfer raises are lined with 15 x 20-cm (6 x 8-in.) cribbing and are 1.22 m (4 ft) in the clear. Each cribbing is protected from wear by a high carbon steel angle which is nailed onto the cribbing. The transfer raises are driven from each side of the raise station on an angle of 1.1 rad (63°). Each raise con¬sists of a main and a backover branch. The transfer¬raise driving crew consists of two men working one shift only. Grizzly Drifts After the transfer raise reaches the grizzly level, the grizzly drift can be driven. The grizzly drifts are spaced at 10.6-m (35-ft) centers and are driven parallel to the long axis of the ore body (see Fig. 2). This drift is driven by a two-man crew working on one or more drifts at a time using feed-leg machines. The eight grizzlies in the 42.7-m (140-ft) long drift are spaced at 5.3-m

The behavior of the immediate shaly roof within a drift mine in eastern Kentucky, operating in the Coalburg seam, was monitored with roof bolt dynamometers. The dynamometers used were capable of providing readings up to a maximum load of 66.72 kN (15,000 lbs), + 0.022 kN (5 lbs). To observe the influence of moisture on the rate and extent of roof deterioration, 57dynamometers were installed on roof bolts anchored in intake and neutral airways. Monitoring was conducted during the period January 1985 through January 1986, in order to cover a full cycle of dry and wet mine conditions associated with seasonal changes. Analysis of the data showed a trend of roof deterioration induced by condensation and eventual penetration of moisture within the immediate roof bedding planes, leading to rapid disintegration of the mine roof.

The motion of grinding balls has been the subject of study since 191 9 when Davis published the first treatise on this subject. Subsequently came the notion that knowing mill power draft, using Bond equation or others, is sufficient to do an analysis of grinding. Next, population balance models provided accurate scale-up from small laboratory size mills to very large plant size mills. However, this success was not repeated when dealing with semiautogenous grinding mill. The study of charge motion with the discrete element method provides support and answers to such issues. Besides providing an accurate picture of charge motion in large mills, the method begs the investigator to study grate and pulp lifter equally critically with fluid dynamic principles. Hence, in recent years, the field of comminution in grinding mills is advancing on a firm footing.

The paper is divided into two parts. The first part describes an investigation of the effect of temperature on the conditioning and flotation of an ilmenite ore with a 1:l oleic acid-fuel oil mixture as collector. During conditioning the pulp underwent characteristic changes of flocculation, deflocculation and dispersion which were monitored by measuring the power consumption of the conditioner motor. Optimum flotation results were obtained at the end of the deflocculation period. High ilmenite recoveries were obtained at high temperatures and high concentrate grades at low temperatures. The second part of the paper describes a study of the effect of temperature on the adsorption of oleic acid at the ilmenite/water interface. At high adsorption densities it was chemical and exothermic. Contact angles showed that the hydrophobicity of the collector-coated minerals increased with an increase in temperature.

Fluid flow phenomena and therefore the flotation efficiency of air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation are strongly dependent on operating and design variables such as air and slurry flow rates, underflow and overflow opening areas, percent solids of the feed, reagent levels, particle size and ASH length. Time-averaged multiphase flow characteristics, as determined by X-ray CT (described in a previous publication), are used to understand and explain the steady-state ASH flotation of quartz. A detailed parametric study of quartz flotation by a nominal 2in. diam. air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH-2C) revealed the influence of these variables on the flotation response, which is discussed in terms of the multiphase flow characteristics. Thus, a phenomenological description of quartz flotation has been established to assist in the further development and utilization of the ASH technology.

Jigs are the most important equipment used in the separation process that exploits the stratification of particulate matter under the influence of hydrodynamic and gravitational forces. Very little is known about the determined mechanisms by which particles of varying density, size, and shape stratify in a moving bed. A model is developed by using the discrete element method to understand the behavior of jig bed. This model is utilized here to study the stratification behavior of the bed and its control. The control action is based on the understanding of the physics of the stratification process within the framework of fuzzy logic. The actions suggested by the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) depend on the current degree of stratification and the existing frequency of the jig cycle. The results show that the FLC achieves efficiency in stratification with minor variations to the jig cycle.

Currently, a 4.3 km long drift is being developed on the 3440 level in the Lower Kalamazoo project at the San Manuel Mine, Magma Copper Company, AZ. The drift, located at 1050 m below surface, is being constructed using a 4.6 m diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM). The drift is ventilated by a forcing type auxiliary ventilation system. At the face, to mitigate the impact on the work environment of the TBM, the system is equipped with dust extraction and refrigeration systems. Recently, to evaluate the ventilation conditions in the drift, a continuous monitoring system has been installed. The system can be used to measure the air velocity, barometric pressure, relative humidity and air and rock temperatures. This study describes the capabilities and limitations of this system, and presents a summary of the results.

Management support systems are extremely important to mining management to enable them to operate their company as a business. Management must give attention to the financial, maintenance, materials, and other reporting and control systems that are necessary to successfully operate a mining company. This subsection describes the management support systems that are critical to most mining companies. In this introductory review, the major objectives and functions of these management support systems will be introduced. The following topics will expand on the functions and key concepts as well as other considerations in each of these systems areas. Additionally, this introductory review will touch upon the unique environment that mining companies find themselves in from a management and personnel standpoint and the effect of this environment on management systems. Additionally, specific keys to successful systems installations and acceptance in the mining industry are discussed.

A placer ore jig, typically used to recover fine gold, tin and diamonds from alluvial ores, has been modified to remove fine pyrite from minus 6.4 mm (-114 inch) coal. In parallel tests, it proved to be far superior to two conventional coal jigs, the Baum and the Baum-feldspar, in removing fine pyrite from coal. The Pan-Am placer jig was found to remove essentially all of the +28 mesh pyrite and from 99% to 90%, decreasingly, in the 28 to 200 mesh range. This jig also showed a superior performance to the Baum-Type jigs in removing fine coal from its associated refuse. The superiority of the Pan-Am placer jig is related to the strong emphasis given on the suction stroke and, hence, on consolidation trickling, whereas the Baum jigs principally emphasize the pulsion stroke during jigging.

The work reported herein compares the support characteristics of two different types of roof truss subjected to the same force in the horizontal tension member. The major differences between the two trusses are in the sequence of tensioning the horizontal and inclined members and in the design of the loading brackets. A photoelastic model was used to compare stresses at points along the roof of the mine opening and at the junction of the roof surface and the rib. The effects of simulated subsidence on stress in the roof and on tension in the horizontal member were analyzed. Results indicate that there are significant differences in the overall support characteristics of the two trusses. Conclusions are drawn relative to which type of roof truss provides the most favorable support if the horizontal members are tensioned equally.

The Gross Rosebel gold deposits are located in theGuiana Shield of northcentral Suriname in South America. The property lies 80 km (50 miles) south of the capital city of Paramaribo. Gross Rosebel covers 170 km2 (65 sq miles) in an area of small hills covered primarily with secondary tropical rain forest, separated by discontinuous savannah (Fig. 1). The concession is accessible from Paramaribo by a 120-km (75-mile) paved and all-weather gravel road. Surficial gold was discovered in 1880 by local artisanal miners. This was followed by small-scale mechanized mining from 1885 to 1939. Placer Development carried out the first systematic exploration program from 1974 to 1977. In May 1992, Golden Star Resources optioned the property. Initial shallow reconnaissance diamond drilling of the extensive surface geochemical anomalies intersected sporadic gold mineralization with no apparent continuity between drill sections. Successive deep augering, trenching and systematic grid drilling, based on information from surface mapping, allowed the development of a preliminary geological model. Further drilling of specific structural-lithologic targets and more complete synthesis of geological data from the trenching and deep auger sampling added to the geological model and defined the multiple controls of gold mineralization. Carefully planned infill drilling on a tighter grid spacing resulted in progressive definition of reserves within six discrete gold deposits. Reserves based on $11.25/g ($350/oz) gold now stand at 35.5 Mt (39.1 million st) of 1.8 g/t (0.053 oz/st) gold, or 62.2 t (2 million oz) of gold.
