The leaching of copper, gold, and nickel in tanks requires mixing. Minerals require oxygen, acid and/or base [NH3] to assist in the leaching process. Two basic types of tanks are used for this operation. They are either vertical tanks or closed horizontal tanks called autoclaves. This paper discusses mineral leaching, it's mixing requirements, and autoclaves.

A novel low-cost technology is described that treats excavation waters in estuarine environments where water coloration due to humic material is present, along with acidity, turbidity, sediment and salinity. Strictly defined, a stull is an inclined or horizontal timber support; a vertically placed timber is defined as a prop. Common usage allows the catchall term "stull" to refer to all such uniaxial mine support, regardless of orientation. Typically a stull is a round wooden column that is wedged in place to provide short-term auxiliary support between sill and back, or between hanging wall and footwall. Stulls may be used exclusively or in con- junction with other support systems such as roof bolts, shotcrete, or cribbing. Stulls are used both as local temporary support in stoping operations and for uniform systematic support installations. Where stoping areas are to be abandoned soon after excavation, stulls may be used to provide temporary support during mining operations. Where controlled caving and subsidence is required, stull supports are designed to fail in a systematic, predictable manner. Wood type is selected on the basis of availability, price, and load carrying characteristics. Coniferous woods are typically used, especially to carry heavy ground loads. Brittle woods are generally avoided because of their tendency to fail suddenly. Gradual yielding failure is preferable to sudden, unexpected failure of the support. Some usage of wood from deciduous trees such as cottonwood and other poplars has been reported in Grants, NM. These stulls reportedly mushroomed as the ground load increased but continued to maintain their structural integrity. Stulls fabricated from structural steel are used in special applications. Adjustable lengths are commercially available in mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic designs. The high cost of mechanical stulls limits their use to mining systems where recovery and reuse is possible. End blocking, also called headboards or footboards, uses wood blocks that are placed between the stull end and the ground they are supporting. The blocks are typically 50.8 to 101.6 mm (2 to 4 in.) thick, 203.2 to 304.8 mm (8 to 12 in.) wide, and 381 to 609.6 mm (15 to 24 in.) long. End blocking serves to distribute the support over wider back area. Compression of the end blocking gives visual indication of wall movement prior to failure of the stull. A common application of the stull is in flat-bedded uranium mining during pillar extraction. Many western US uranium mines use a pillar pattern development to delineate the irregular ore pods. After development of an appropriate sized pillar, the ore pillars are then sequentially mined out, leaving the undercut hanging wall or back to cave. Where thickness of the ore is less than 4.3 m (14 ft), stulls are generally used to provide ground control as the pillar is removed in slices. Experience dictates the density of stull placement. In general, the number and size of stulls should be sufficient to resist ground closure and to provide support for drilling and loading operations adjacent to the pillar. Stulls next to the mining face are often lagged 0.9 to 1.2 m (3 or 4 ft) up from the floor (or sill) to confine the blasted ore to a passage next to the pillar. Mucking is simplified by this confinement. Experience dictates whether back control along a mining face requires removal of stulls to allow con- trolled subsidence of the back or hanging wall. Without caving or closure, abutment pressure can create poor ground conditions near the pillar.

Aquifer. A formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that contains sufficient satu rated permeable material to yield significant quan tities of water to wells and springs. Artesian. Synonymous with confined; see ground water, confined. Capillary fringe. The zone immediately above the water table in which all or some of the interstices are filled with water that is under less than atmospheric pressure and that is continuous with the water below the water table. Conceptual model. A conceptualization of a field hydrogeologic framework that facilitates the development of analytical field testing procedures. The results of the test(s) may force changes in the initial conceptual model. Conductivity, hydraulic. Replaces the term "field coefficient of permeability." The volume of water at the existing kinematic viscosity that will move in unit time under a unit hydraulic gradient through a unit area measured at right angles to the direction of flow, if the porous medium is isotropic and the fluid homogeneous. Confining bed. A body of "impermeable" material stratigraphically adjacent to one or more aquifers; its hydraulic conductivity may range from nearly zero to some value distinctly lower than that of the aquifer. Flow, steady. Any point where the magnitude and direction of the specific discharge are constant in time. Flow, uniform. At every point the specific discharge has the same magnitude and direction. Flow, unsteady. At any point the magnitude or direction of the specific discharge changes with time. Fluid potential. The mechanical energy per unit mass of a fluid at any given point in space and time with respect to an arbitrary state and datum; the fluid potential is proportional to the head. Ground water, confined. Ground water under pressure significantly greater than atmospheric; its upper limit is the bottom of a bed of distinctly lower hydraulic conductivity than that of the material in which the confined water occurs. Ground water, perched. Unconfined ground water separated from an underlying body of ground water by an unsaturated zone. Ground water, unconfined. Water in an aquifer that has a water table. Head, static. Height above a standard datum of the surface of a column of water (or other liquid) that can be supported by the static pressure at a given point. Homogeneity. Hydrogeologic properties are identical everywhere. Hydraulic gradient. Change in static head per unit of distance in a given direction. Hydrostratigraphic unit. A body of material having considerable lateral extent and comprising a geologic framework for a reasonably distinct hydrogeologic system. Isotropy. Condition in which all significant properties are independent of direction. Porosity. Property of containing interstices or voids; may be expressed quantitatively as the ratio of the volume of its interstices to its total volume. Porosity, effective. Interconnected pore space available for fluid transmission; expressed as a percentage of the total volume occupied by the interconnecting interstices. Potentiometric surface. A surface that represents the static head along a particular specified surface or stratum. Specific retention. Ratio of the volume of water that the rock or soil, after being saturated, will retain against the pull of gravity to the volume of the rock or soil. Specific yield. Ratio of the volume of water that the rock or soil, after being saturated, will yield by gravity to the volume of the rock or soil. Storage, specific. The volume of water released from or taken into storage per unit volume of the porous medium per unit change in head.

INTRODUCTION In uranium miners, a causal relationship between exposure of the lung to high levels of alpha radiation and the consequential induction of bronchial carcinoma is now well-established (Wagoner, et al., 1965). Quantitation of this cause-effect association presents considerable difficulty, however, as the result of various confounding factors such as the contributing effects of smoking and/or arsenic exposure (Archer, Gillam, and Wagoner, 1976), normal metabolic variability and, perhaps most important of all, the absence of accurate radon/radon daughter exposure data. Estimates of cumulative lung exposures suffer from inaccuracy due to critical factors such as 1) unknown ventilation rates; 2) difficulties in obtaining representative mine air samples; 3) the variable character and magnitudes of the exposure sources; and 4) specific differences in metabolism and job histories that exist among miners. It was with considerable enthusiasm, therefore, that investigators readily embraced the idea of using skeletal burdens of the relatively longlived descendants of radon and its short-lived daughters, i.e., 210 Pb and 210Po (Archer, et al., 1968), to provide a measure of cumulative past exposure wherein the body acts as an integrating dosimeter. Early studies considered excretion rates of 210Pb and 210Po in urine, blood and hair (Sultzer and Hursh, 1954; Black, et al., 1968; Jaworowski, 1965; Bell and Gilliland, 1964) as well as their concentrations in bone samples, if and when they became available (Blanchard, Archer, and Saccomanno, 1969). These methods were ultimately complemented by in vivo, whole-body counting techniques using low background, NaI-Csl(T1) detectors (Eisenbud, et al., 1969). By this latter method, it would be possible to measure the skeletal burden of 210Pb directly, thereby avoiding the many difficulties associated with the relation between nuclide excretion rates and body burden. The rationale was simple; by knowing the skeletal burden of 210Pb it should be possible, by the judicious use of an applicable metabolic model, to estimate the cumulative lung exposure to alpha-emitting radon daughters (Fig. 1). Various models that were consequently constructed, however (Fisher, 1969), all suffered from the same limitation, i.e., the assumption that the source of 210 Pb in the skeleton and the source of lung exposure to the short-lived radon daughters were simply related and, if not, were at [ ] least not too variable (Raabe, 1970). By now, the difficulty with this assumption has been recognized and more sophisticated modeling techniques have been attempted which presumably present a more realistic picture of exposure conditions (Holtzman and Rundo, 1981). There is, nevertheless, the pessimistic view that due to the variety and variability (in time as well as in character) of sources that may exist for the origin of 210Pb in bone, it may [never] be possible to estimate past lung exposures accurately by an indirect, predictive model. For example, the origin of 210 Pb in the skeleton may include such sources as: 1) the decay of short-lived 222Rn daughters, inhaled and ingested; 2) the decay of 222Rn dissolved in body fluids and tissues; 3) directly from 210 Pb present in air, inhaled and ingested; and 4) 210Pb from non-occupational sources, e.g., food, water, smoking and endogenous 226Ra. The contribution of each of these sources may vary depending upon specific site conditions such as ventilation and mining operation. "The Vermilion range extends from the vicinity of Tower to and beyond the ""international boundary, crossing into Canada at the eastern end of Hunter's Island. Above the iron bearing formation, geologically, comes the basal conglomerate of the Lower Huronian, carrying large boulders and Masses of the iron bearing rocks."

The Florida Peninsula has existed as a part of a much broader plateau, since at least the Early Cretaceous. This plateau, the Floridan Plateau, now consists of the present peninsula and a broad submerged shelf of equivalent size extending the length of the state and out into the Gulf of Mexico. Florida Peninsula was separated from the mainland United States by a negative area called the Suwannee Straits. To the south of this feature existed an environment similar to today?s Bahamo Banks where very pure calcium and magnesium carbonates with associated evaporites were deposited. Thus the Eocene and Oligocene contain little or no quartz sand or clay minerals except in the Panhandle west of the Suwannee Straits where some clastics were contributed by rivers from the north.

Sustainable development is defined as ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’1 There has been considerable debate of late between environmentalists and mining operators concerning the current regulation and operation of mountaintop mining. To those not familiar with the practice, it essentially applies an area mining method to a mountaintop, removing all overburden above coal seams, resulting in full recovery of the resource with the excess or swell spoil material - (rock and dirt) being deposited in engineered fills in hollows to the side (known as hollow fills or valley fills - very similar to highway fills). Because most of the dialogue has been adversarial and mining’s response is perceived to be primarily reactive instead of proactive, a rift in communication and value systems between the two sides has widened. Since 1999, the global mining community has been concerned that there is a disconnect between mining practices and the values of today’s society.3 Working through the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) was created to review mining practices in a project entitled Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) driven by the following four goals:

The Changement mine in French Guyana has, since 1983, processed gold ore by classical gravity methods. A large part of the gold is in the form of very small, free or enclosed grains. Recovery by gravity methods is thus limited (25-30%) and the present plant produces about 40,000 t annually of auriferous waste assaying about 6 git. The company therefore decided to retreat the waste by heap cyanidation. After laboratory tests which showed the feasibility of the method, a pilot test was set up on site. An experimental 3000 t heap, composed of waste of 0-8 mm grain size, was laid out by bucket loader on an impermeable pad covered by PVC and geotextile cloth. The upper layer of the heap was reworked by mechanical shovel to break up the area that had been compacted by the passage of the loader so as to restore adequate permeability.

A thermal plasma-assisted laminar flow reactor was used to evaluate the kinetics of converting alumina to sodium aluminate in flight. Free energy minimization calculations were used to determine experimental conditions. The experimental variables included alumina particle size, alumina/sodium nitrate molar ratio, temperature and residence time. A mathematical model for the conversion was developed and validated. Experimental and mathematical results are presented.
