Two modes of collector addition techniques are applied in the column flotation for cleaning ultra fine coal. The collector can be: 1) added directly into the coal slurry through the feed system; and 2) gasified collector and transported in the gas phase through the bubbles. Operating parameters of the column flotation were investigated through three phases of work plans for Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal. In present study, the column flotation using two modes of collector addition techniques were tested and compared. Ninety percent or higher combustible recovery can be achieved by using both methods. However, utilizing the gasified collector addition technique in column flotation has more potential than direct liquid addition technique to obtain the higher recovery at same collector dosage.

The large population base, complex geology of the large land mass, and notable commercial activity have accelerated the development of underground construction market in China. The projected lengths of underground openings per year in the various sectors are: hydro-tunnels, 180 km; coal mine entries, 40 km; transport-tunnels, 300+ km. An example of the mega projects (being planned by the Government) is the water supply scheme for connecting Yangtze river to Yellow river involving 131 km of water tunnels with a diameter of 8-10m. Several large projects are highlighted in the paper with reference to the schemes for generating hydro-power, mining of coal and minerals, and constructing transportation networks. The related problems of construction and geomechanics are outlined.

An application of water-system magnetizing technology for the mineral processing and hydrometallurgy is introduced in this paper. The water-system magnetizing technique flotation and cyanidation leaching test of vein-ore of gold-bearing and conventional technique flotation and cyanidation leaching of gold-bearing vein-ore was carried out. The best condition of water-system magnetizing was determined by orthogonal test. The results have shown that the water-system magnetizing technology may increase the efficiency of flotation and cyanidation leaching for gold. The industry-scale test results also show that it can increase flotation recovery by 1-3% and leaching extraction by 3-5% of a gold-bearing vein- ore. The interaction of magnetizing water-system with minerals was carried out and initially investigated.

Leachates from gold heap-leaching mines may contain selenium concentrations as high as 2 mg/L. Previous studies report satisfactory selenium adsorption by activated alumina from relatively "clean" drinking waters. However, the findings of these studies cannot be directly applied to the treatment of mine leachate where other ions compete for the alumina adsorption sites. This study evaluated the adsorption of selenium from a mine leachate to develop design parameters for a full-scale activated alumina process. The study revealed that 68% of the selenium in the leachate could be removed by alumina at pH levels greater than 5.0. At pH levels less than 4, silica was poorly adsorbed by alumina, and selenium adsorption was improved. Silica adversely affected the selenium adsorption capacity.

Under special circumstances, electrical energy can successfully replace chemical ex­plosives for blasting rock. High pressure plasma can be generated in the confines of a drillhole, by a powerful electrical dis­charge. The energy level can be adjusted to replicate the effect of a high explosive. The main difference is the almost total ab­sence of gas generation with electric blast­ing. Once the rock fractures, the small amount of matter used for generating the plasma rapidly cools off and regains its former volume. High speed film studies clearly show, that the initial speed of blasted rock fragments is the greatest, no further gas propelled acceleration takes place .. Figure 1, shows a typical electric blast of an oversize boulder of quarzite in an open pit mine.

The use of cyanide in gold mining requires the careful handling and storage of cyanide rich tailings. Cyanide in groundwater can frequently be both persistent and mobile, so that tailings basins need to be designed to limit and collect seepage. Assessment of the potential environmental impact requires an understanding of the hydrogeologic regime, both before, during and after mining. Groundwater monitoring wells provide a basis for monitoring tailings pond behaviour and for assessing the impact of mitigative measures to reduce or control seepage. A case example of Cheni Gold Mines Lawyers Project in Canada is presented to illustrate the use of groundwater monitoring to determine the amount of cyanide degradation and attenuation between the tailings pond and the receiving environment.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an alkaline oxidative pretreatment to increase the recovery of gold from refractory sulfide ores containing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) and/or pyrite (FeS2). Pretreatment of a low grade ore containing 0.4% FeAsS, 3.5% FeS2, and 2.74g/mt Au with 1.2m NaOH, 40 psig o2, 100° C, and 4 hr in a 2-L autoclave resulted in 94 to 96% sulfide oxidation. cyanidation of the pretreated residue resulted in 88% Au extraction compared to <20% Au extraction for untreated ore. Cyanide consumption was 0.25 kg NaCN per metric ton of ore. A flowsheet for treating sulfidic low-grade gold ore is proposed.

The concentration of barite by gravity separation generates substantial quantities of fine particle wastes, and it is estimated that =40% of the contained barite is lost to these waste streams. In this study, froth flotation was examined as a potential method for the recovery of fine-barite particles. The study included the use of kinetic equations to estimate the variables affecting flotation, batch-scale rougher flotation tests to study the flotation variables and an examination of alternatives for the cleaning of the rougher concentrate. Results indicated that a concentrate grade of 96.5% could be achieved with a recovery of 77.5%. Although barite flotation from industrial wastes is more difficult than direct barite flotation, the process has considerable economic potential.

A wide concept of flotation equipment and technologies is presented in this paper. The basis for the presentation in Outokumpu&apos;s world-wide experience in mineral processing and other related areas, and continuing research and development work done in Finland as well as abroad by Outokumpu&apos;s subsidiaries (and customers). It is understood that flotation equipment selection for a certain process stage is becoming more complicated. The Los Angeles Metro Red Line has installed high density polyethylene (HDPE) as a gas and water barrier around all subsurface structures. The paper reviews the geological setting and resulting need for the barrier. HDPE installation practices are outlined, as are the risks to the barrier, from normal placement methods. Testing and inspection methods used to assure a quality installation are described, and also the field tag method for recording deficiencies and their repair. Specifications and installation changes that will be incorporated into subsequent contracts to improve the quality of the installation are high lighted. The cause of the fire that destroyed part of a tunnel is reviewed as are the revised precautions put in place to prevent a recurrence.

Ventilation ductlines with a single fan or with a series of fans are analyzed. The duct friction loss factors are discussed. Numerical solutions, presented in the paper, applies to any fan number and locations along a duct line. The findings are compared with formulas available in the technical literature. Values of the air leakage factors are presented in the SI, technical metric, and US unit systems. A method is shown of how to determine the leak- age factor for a given ductline. Optimum solutions for the sample duct lines with two and five fans in series are discussed and presented in a graphical form. Performance of fans in series is discussed in conjunction with both friction pressure loss and leak- age.

INTRODUCTION Site characterization using oriented borehole core is the subject of this paper. Borehole core is a standard source of data for rock mechanics investigations. Oriented borehole core provides data whereby the geometric orientation of various geologic discontinuities (faults, joints, bedding, etc.) may be determined. The orientation and strength characteristics of discontinuities are important in many engineering investigations and in particular, in slope stability analyses. In heavily vegetated or soil covered situations, oriented borehole core may provide the only means of assessing the subsurface planes of weakness which characterize the site. The purpose of this paper is to briefly describe various methods or orienting core, core characteristics which may be logged and the methods of processing and using the data for site characterization.

Leaching studies of low-grade manganese ore containing 31.77% Mn and 23.71 % Fe from Nishikhal, India, were carried out using pyritiferous lignite as a reductant in sulfuric acid medium. The variables studied were quantity of lignite, sulfuric acid concentration and temperature. Regression equations for the extraction of manganese and potassium were determined from 23 full factorial design data. The experimental conditions for the extraction of manganese were optimized using the steepest-ascent method. It was found that 99.03% of the manganese could be extracted in three hours with an ore to lignite ratio of 1:1.8, a sulfuric acid concentration of 1.9 M and a temperature of 99°C. Four Ca-bentonitic clays from Alabama were evaluated for use in diammonium phosphate (DAP) or urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) fertilizer suspensions. The viscosity and gel strength of suspensions prepared with different proportions of a Western bentonite clay and sodium-exchanged Alabama clays were measured as a function of clay content and dispersant concentration. The results obtained suggested that three of the Alabama Ca-bentonites would replace about 40% of the more expensive Western bentonite in UAN and DAP fertilizer suspensions. The performance of the Nu-modified clays, prepared according to the Tennessee Valley Authority soda ash method, was as good or even better than those observed for the Mg-, NaIMg- or K-modified clays. The TVA clay modification procedure appears to be reliable and cost effective.

Gold heap leach operations often process low grade ores with little margin for cost increases. The advantage of heap leach operations is the considerable savings in both capital and operating costs. This paper looks at an alternative pH modifier to lime in the heap leach process, namely bauxite waste mud or red mud. The red mud can contain trace amounts of gold and was found to be an excellent source of slow release sodium hydroxide for long-term pH modification. Column cyanide leaches showed that 25 kgt-1 of red mud provided a higher pH and longer pH modification than 0.25 kgt-1 of lime. Contaminants leached from the red mud hampered the adsorption of the aurocyanide complex onto activated carbon.

Computer processing and high resolution graphics display of geochemical data were used to quickly, accurately, and efficiently obtain impor¬tant decision-making information for tin (cassiterite) exploration, Seward Peninsula, Alaska (USA). Primary geochemical dispersion patterns were determined for tin-bearing intrusive granite phases of Late Cretaceous age with exploration bedrock lithogeochemistry at the Kougarok tin prospect. Expensive diamond drilling footage was required to reach exploration objectives. Recogni¬tion of element distribution and dispersion patterns was useful in subsurface interpretation and correla¬tion, and to aid location of other holes. Tin was its own best pathfinder. Arsenic, also a useful pathfinder element, forms a discrete halo peripheral to tin mineralization. The arsenic halo is expressed in hand specimens by asenopyrite and/or scorodite staining.

Research efforts which have led to reduced resin bolting costs at White Pine Mine are described. Key factor was development of the capability to drill small holes (1 1/8 in. diam) in the hard (20,000-30,000 psi) White Pine roof rock. Economic data comparing the 1 1/8 in fully-grouted Resin Bolt to the conventional 1 3/8 in fully-grouted bolt is also included. The development of a method which allows the Resin Bolt to hold itself in the hole thus removing the requirement for the operator to break his "work momentum" while he stops and waits for the resin to set is also described. This technique increased bolter productivity by 23% in a recent full-scale unit test.

A major concern for operators of leaching/SX-EW plants is a phenomenon known as gunk or crud. The build up of gunk is typically the result of fine particulates which are transported via the leach operation to the solvent extraction plant. The particulates develop into a solid layer that concentrates at the aqueous/organic interface. This can cause phase separation problems which can result in entrainment and other deleterious operating conditions. Most operations physically remove the gunk from the SX settlers and process it via a centrifuge or coalescer to remove valuable organic. While both methods have served for many years, Magma is currently evaluating the use of a chemical surfactant which induces a definitive separation of particulates from organic.

The Big Walnut Sanitary Trunk Sewer Extension Project consists of two segments, the first a 10&apos; excavated diameter tunnel in rock through the gas producing Ohio Shale formation and the second will be microtunneled through unconsolidated water-bearing deposits. Relatively large quantities of methane gas have been encountered in the Ohio Shale. In the softground segment, the sands and gravels contain large water storage capacity and contain shallow residential wells. This paper will present an evaluation of potential gas inflows in the rock tunnel, design considerations for contract documents preparation to inform bidders as to the volumes of gases which may been countered and design options for construction of an impermeable shaft excavation support system to insure residential wells remain in service.

Jim Walter Resources No. 4 mine produces coal through retreat longwall mining at 610 to 670 m (2000 to 2200 ft) of depth. A three entry, total yield pillar, longwall development experimental region was established for three adjacent longwall panels utilizing 6.1 m (20 ft) wide gate section pillars. Presently, the first longwall panel is completed with roadway deformational behavior monitored for a ground control assessment of the mining system. Data illustrate that the total yield pillar gate section design at No. 4 mine is presently comparable to gate section designs having large equal size chain pillars. Ground conditions will continue to be monitored during the mining of subsequent longwall panels in order to determine the ground control implications from multiple panel extraction.
