High costs--and high risks--are normal in coal exploration and mine development. But risks and ultimate costs are minimized by foreknowledge of prospective coal seams and adjacent formations. Extensive drill hole programs are often used to obtain needed information. Cores and cuttings from these holes are used to determine coal location, thickness, and quality; they are also used to study physical and geological characteristics of surrounding beds. Valuable as these core and cuttings studies are, their effectiveness is often diminished by loss of recovery or by incomplete analysis. Needed is an effective and economical method for augmenting these studies. Well logs provide information of the type needed for efficient cool prospecting. Furthermore, obtaining these logs in drill holes, and evaluating the data they provide, is both fast and economical. To investigate the usefulness of well logging methods in coal explorations, the authors worked with Mr. Jon Jenkins of Truax Truer Coal Company. Logs were run in a number of drill holes in various areas of the Illinois Basin; these areas provided variety both in coal quality and geologic conditions. The data were studied extensively using computer methods similar to those now used in the evaluation of oil and gas wells. (2, 3) This study was used to produce a computer-generated analysis designed especially for mining problems.

Mine closure and reclamation issues have evolved over the past several years becoming further complicated by stricter standards and by the cmrent economic climate and price of gold. Many mine permits are calling for more stringent remediation of spent ore heaps and tailings. Leachate solution water quality must meet strict discharge criteria for multiple parameters besides cyanide at mine closure. Closure standards are more difficult to meet and most mines do not have an increased budget at the end of mine life to deal with the falling standards. These issues make additional gold recove1y at the end of mine life a critical problem in financing some closure operations. Another issue is the length of time that must be budgeted for heap rinsing operations. Innovative biological processes developed and applied by Pintail Systems, Inc. at numerous mine closures have indicated that bio-processes can significantly enhance gold recovery dur­ing heap cyanide bio-detox over the recoveries expected from rinse operations. If heap rinsing can be eliminated or reduced and if gold recovery can be improved at the end of mine life, many mine closures may be possible with processes that pay for themselves or generate profit. Additional advantages of the bio­detox technology is that it can be engineered to treat multiple contaminants besides Weak Acid Dissociable (WAD) cyanide. Other contaminants treated in heap process solutions include nitrates, ammonia, heavy metals, thiocyanate and total cyanide. At the Cripple Creek and Victor Mining Company Ironclad Mine near Victor, CO, 5 million tons ofrinsed, heap leached spent ore were biologically detoxified to reduce cyanide content, enhance gold recovery during bio-detox and to reduce dissolved metals in heap leachate solutions. During the bio-detox treatment period a substantial improvement in gold recovery allowed the detox oper­ation to operate as a profit center. Final gold recovery was at least twice what was expected from a normal rinse operation.

Facing lower gold prices, gold mine operators throughout the world are seeking ways to reduce costs for treating refractory sulfide ores. Many gold mines, currently producing oxide ores, have underlying refractory sulfide deposits and the operators could extend the mine life by processing these sulfides. Fortunately, oxidation technologies for refractory ores need not be complex nor costly. GeoBiotics, Inc. has developed heap biooxidation technologies (GEOCOAT™) for treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates. GEOCOATTM uses simple low cost unit operations common to heap leaching of gold and copper ores. The cost effectiveness and flexibility of GEOCOAT™ heap biooxidation allows mining companies to expand operations to include refract01y ore. In addition, GEOCOAT™ can be utilized to supplement or replace existing oxidation processes such as roasting, autoclaving, or agitated tank biooxidation, and to treat a lower resource grade than is currently economic. The GEOCOAT™ technology involves coating sulfide concentrates onto sized support rocks and biooxidizing the sulfides in a heap configuration. After biooxidation the concentrate is stripped from the support rock, neutralized and leached in conventional cyanidation facilities. Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) produces over 885,000 ounces of gold per year from oxide and refractory ores at its Obuasi operations in Ghana. Refractory flotation concentrates are treated in roasters and in the world's largest stirred tank biooxidation facility. In August 1998, AGC and GeoBiotics jointly constructed and operated a field demonstration heap of the GEOCOATTM process at the Obuasi operations. The heap contained I 082 tonnes of support rock and 125 tonnes of concentrate. The heap was approximately 19 meters square at the base and 3.8 meters high, and ran for 88 days after which the concentrate was reclaimed. Average gold recovery after biooxidation was 91.5% with a NaCN consumption of 8.6 kg/t. Baseline gold recovery by direct cyanidation of the concentrate was 53.8%.

A great deal of effort has been put forth in recent years to arrive at accurate projections of the demands for tunnels in this decade. In reviewing the statistics presented by various study groups, it appears that during the decade from 1960-69, there were some 1,335 miles of rock and soft ground construction tunnels excavated throughout the world. These statistics indicate 645 miles of rock tunnel and 689 miles of soft ground tunnel were excavated during the last decade. This is expected to increase to 3,000 miles in the 1970's according to projections made by various authorities in the field of construction tunneling. I point out the above statistics to emphasize two main points: (1) The demands for tunneling in this decade alone are staggering. (2) There is a fairly even distribution in the amount of rock tunneling and soft ground tunneling being excavated. Unfortunately, available statistics do not answer many important questions about tunneling which are of great importance to the contractor and to boring machine designers. For example, how many of the projects completed in the past decade involved both soft ground and rock tunneling? How many projects involved tunneling in conditions where both rock and soft ground were contacted at the same face. While the answers to these questions remain unanswered, I am sure most of you can think of numerous examples of projects where mixed face conditions are prevalent. Many of you are probably familiar with the Austin Crosstown Interceptor which was bid last month in Austin, Texas. Here is a project involving 57,000 feet of tunnel where limestones and clay shales are expected to be traversed. Another project, the Tonner Tunnels No. 1 and No. 2, near Los Angeles, involve some 22,000 feet of tunnel where mixed soil and rock conditions are expected. We can confidently predict such obvious long-term trends affecting the minerals industry as - increasing consumption, exhaustion of easily discovered near-surface ores, and sharp limitations upon open pit mining by environmental considerations. There- fore, we must intensify the exploration for, and the development and exploitation of, deep bodies of potash and other ores. This paper examines the state of the art of the search for, and the evaluation of, potash from both a geological bias and a mining practicability. The use of indirect geological methods and geophysical techniques, followed by expensive deep drilling, are the conventional approach to evaluation and development of mining plans. The geologist and the geophysicist will have to find ways to perform both of these tasks better and cheaper.

The hydraulic movement of coal is here defined as the movement of all sizes of coal in pipes and open flumes, by gravity and against gravity. It is not restricted to coal which is in slurry form. In other words, it is not crushed to a size in the 8 to 20 mesh size range. The top size could be as high as 12 inches. The dewatering of coal which is transported hydraulically is carried out to restore the coal to a suitable form for further cleaning, or for transportation by other methods. The process involves complete separation of all the coal, wood and rock from the water so that the water can be recycled without undue damage to pumps, pipes and monitors.

INTRODUCTION During the last decade, several studies in France (e.g., Perraud et al. , 1970; Chameaud et al., 1974, 1979 and 1980) and the United States (e.g., Stuart et al., 1978; Cross et al., 1978, 1980 and 1981) have demonstrated the systematic production of emphysema, fibrosis and tumors in the lungs of animals exposed to radon daughters alone or to mixtures of uranium-mine air contaminants. The studies in beagle dogs have been particularly interesting because of the uncertain etiology of the disease and the (apparently) diverse results of the studies at the University of Rochester and the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). In the Rochester studies, reported by Morken (1973), beagle dogs were exposed to "normal" room air dust loads and radon daughters from 200 to 10,000 WLM*, delivered in 1 to 50 days (rate of delivery, about 200 WLM per day of exposure). Histological examination of tissues was conducted at 1, 2 and 3 years after exposure for all exposure levels. No cancers were noted in these dogs that received estimated alveolar doses of 34 to 1700 rad (0.34 to 17 Gy). Pathologic changes were found only in the alveolar and bronchiolar regions of the lung. These changes were small, subtle, variable, and widely separated, involving only a very small fraction of lung tissue. Lesions appeared as focal thickening of alveolar septa, with some metaplasia of alveolar cells and some hyperplasia of bronchial epithelium. In the PNL experiments reported by Cross et al. (1978), beagle dogs were exposed in lifespan studies to mixtures of radon daughters (rate of delivery, about 14 WLM per day of exposure), uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. One group of dogs was exposed to cigarette smoke alone. Except in control and smoke-only groups, the dogs died within 4' years of the first radon daughter exposure, or were killed when death appeared imminent because of pulmonary insufficiency (characterized by rapid, shallow breathing). Control and smoke-only animals were killed at periods corresponding to highmortality periods in the groups exposed to radon daughters and mixtures of uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. Emphysema and fibrosis were much more prevalent and severe in the lungs of dogs exposed to the mixtures. These dogs also had adenomatous lesions, which progressed to squamous metaplasia of alveolar epithelium, epidermoid carcinoma and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Pathologic changes in the upper airways of these dogs were most prominent in the nasal mucosa, and included a few squamous carcinomas in the nasal cavity. Respiratory tract neoplasia was noted after ~4 years exposure and at cumulative exposures exceeding approximately 12,000 WLM. Apart from differences in associated carrier aerosol (room air dust vs. uranium ore dust) and radon-daughter exposure rate (200 WLM/day, shortduration exposure vs. 14 WLM/day, long-duration exposure), the most obvious difference in the Rochester and PNL studies was the observation time following exposure (3 years maximum vs. >4 years). Although neoplasia may not have been observed in the Rochester animals because of the earlier termination of the experiments, it is surprising that other lesions, such as prominent fibrosis and emphysema, were not reported. A follow-up study (reported here) is currently in progress at PNL to determine the pathogenic role of uranium ore dust alone and, in particular, to clarify the role of the ore dust in the production of the massive pulmonary fibrosis observed in the earlier study. Pulmonary function testing (a recently acquired capability) was included in the follow-up study as an indicator of progressive change in lung tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chronic (4 hr/day, 5 days/week) exposures began when the dogs were about 2 1/2 years old. Two identical exposure chambers provided space for simultaneous, head-only exposure of 24 dogs to ~l5 mg/m3 carnotite uranium ore dust. An aerosol diffusion system was incorporated in each chamber in order to channel fresh aerosol past each dog's head; uranium ore dust was added to the inlet room air with Wright Dust Feed Mechanisms* (WDFM). Uranium ore dust and condensation nuclei concentrations were measured daily; chamber aerosols were monitored occasionally for particle-size distributions as described for previous hamster experiments (Cross et al., 1981). The operation of an activated charcoal system has five separate unit operations. These unit operations have common points for CIP, CIL and CIS system, which vary widely in application. a. Absorption b. Desorption (Stripping) c. Acid Washing d. Reactivation e. Carbon Handling ( carbon transportation, sizing, de­watering, etc.) Cost optimization starts with the basic operating parameters (design philosophy) set down at the time of engineering design. This parameters undergo almost immediate change due to site specific ore requirements, throughput changes, operator requirements or reagent availability. Activated charcoal is sometimes viewed as simple, uncomplicated reagent that requires not optimization. To some extent, this statement is true, but under most circumstances, if the time necessary to optimize the use of activated charcoal is available, the effort is rewarded with significant savings. CPL-Carbon Link has embarked upon a program of supplying technical support with its activated charcoal. Several operation in the United States have under taken to have CPL-Carbon Link do an operational survey to determine if potential savings are possible. CPL-Carbon Link has offered to do these surveys for projects that are clients or simply would like to have CPL-Carbon Link review their operation. The information accumulated by CPL-Carbon Link is being used to attempt to fashion industry standards so that a common reference point came be establish for activated charcoal usage.

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2005 was estimated to be 653 kt (720,000 st). This was a 5-percent increase compared with 2004. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $179 million in 2005. Production was from six companies with 12 processing facilities in four states. California and Nevada were the principal producing states. They accounted for about 70 percent of U.S. production in 2005. U.S. diatomite exports were about 144 kt (159,000 st). Imports were negligible. The internal structure and chemical inertness make diatomite an excellent raw material for filtration, absorbent and filler applications. Filtration, especially the purification of beer, liquors and wine and the cleansing of greases and oils, continued to be the largest end use for diatomite. Other applications include the removal of microbial contaminants, such as bacteria, protozoa and viruses in public water systems, and the filtration of human blood plasma. The use of diatomite as fillers and in pharmaceutical applications, including the filtration of human blood plasma, continues to increase as has its use as an insecticide base and as pozzolan. The relative rank of end uses of diatomite were filter aids, 75 percent; fillers, 11 percent; absorbents, 7 percent and other (mostly cement manufacture), 7 percent.

R. Michael Craig Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground-water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hunder pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. For example, water levels at elevations of 455 m (1500 ft) or more above the top of the Westwater Canyon member of Reply by H.C. Juvkam-Wold In general, Mr. Craig's comments are useful and accurate regarding the potential benefits of aquifer depressurization. However, two of his points require further explanation since they may lead to a misunderstanding of my paper and its predictions. These refer to his comments regarding failure to account for storativity and to non-artesian conditions. Equation 5 is indeed Darcy's steady state equation. However, as a careful review of the appendix in this paper will reveal, I have used this equation to represent semi-steady state conditions. The chemistry of waters processed by Acid Rock Drainage water treatment plants can affect the Total Suspended Solids quality of the plant effluents. The sulfate ions in the ARD water will combine with the calcium ions from the lime that is used to adjust pH to form calcium sulfate. When the sulfate content of the waters to be treated is greater than about 1400 parts per mil­lion, the resulting calcium sulfate concentration will be approx­imately 2100 parts per million. This concentration is above the saturation point for calcium sulfate, and the salt will drop out of solution until the concentration falls below the saturation point. This "salting" phenomenon affects the total suspended solids of the treatment plant effluents by virtue of the fact that the salts will report to the filtration apparatus used for the analy­sis. This scenario is exacerbated as an effluent sample ages. Zortman Mining's water treatment plant effluent was being affected by "salting" during the spring and summer of 1995, and it seemed as though the effluents were exceeding the TSS lim­its; for no obvious reason. A testing program was initiated to verify an observation that "salting' was taking place. Treatment plant samples were collected and allowed to age, with TSS analyses being performed every day that the samples aged. Synthetic solutions were also prepared to study the "salting" phenomenon.

The rare earth elements (REE) which include the 15 lanthanide elements (Z = 57 through 71) and yttrium (Z = 39) are so called because the elements were originally isolated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as oxides from rare minerals. Most REE are not as uncommon in nature as the name implies. Cerium, the most abundant REE (Table 1), comprises more of the earth's crust than copper or lead. Many REE are more common than tin and molyb¬denum, and all but promethium are more common than silver or mercury (Taylor, 1964). Promethium (Z = 61) is best known as an artificial element, but has been reported in very minute quantities in natural materials. Lanthanide elements with low atomic numbers are generally more abundant in the earth's crust than those with high atomic numbers. In addition, lanthanide elements with even atomic numbers are two to seven times more abundant than adjacent lan¬thanides (Table 1) with odd atomic numbers. The lanthanide elements traditionally have been divided into two groups: the light rare earths (LREE), lanthanum through eu¬ropium (Z = 57 through 63); and the heavy rare earths (HREE), gadolinium through lutetium (Z = 64 through 71). Although yttrium is the lightest REE, it is usually grouped with the HREE to which it is chemically and physically similar. The REE are lithophile elements (elements enriched in the earth's crust) that invariably occur together naturally because all are trivalent (except for Ce+4 and Eu+2 in some environments) and have similar ionic radii. Increase in atomic number in the lanthanide group is accompanied by addition of electrons to an inner level rather than the outer shell. Consequently, there is no change in valence with change in atomic number, and the lanthanide elements all fall into the same cell of the periodic table. The chemical and physical differences that do exist within the REE group are caused by small differences in ionic radius, and generally result in segre¬gation of REE into deposits enriched in either light lanthanides or heavy lanthanides plus yttrium. The relative abundance of individual lanthanide elements has been found useful in the modelling of rock-forming processes. Comparisons are generally made using a logarithmic plot of lanthanide abundances normalized to abundances in chondritic (stony) meteorites. The use of this method eliminates the abundance vari¬ation between lanthanides of odd and even atomic number, and allows determination of the extent of fractionation between the lanthanides because such fractionation is not considered to have taken place during chondrite formation. The method is also useful because chondrites are thought to be compositionally similar to the original earth's mantle. Europium anomalies (positive or negative departures of europium from chondrite-normalized plots) have been found to be particularly effective for petrogenetic modelling. REE were originally produced in minor amounts from small deposits in granite pegmatite, the geologic environment in which they were discovered. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, REE came mainly from placer deposits. With the exception of the most abundant lanthanide el¬ements (cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium), individual REE were not commercially available until the 1940s. Since 1965, most of the world's REE have come from two hard rock deposits: Mountain Pass, United States, and Bayan Obo, China. GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF REE DEPOSITS More than 70% of the world's REE raw materials come from three countries: China, the United States, and Australia. China emerged as a major producer of REE raw materials during the 1980s, while Australian and United States market share decreased dramatically (Fig. 1). Table 2 gives recent annual production figures along with estimated reserves by country, and Fig. 2 shows loca¬tions of significant REE mining. MINERALS THAT CONTAIN REE Although REE comprise significant amounts of many minerals, almost all production has come from less than ten minerals. Table 3 lists minerals that have yielded REE commercially or have po¬tential for production in the future. Extraction from a potentially economic REE resource is strongly dependant on its REE miner¬alogy. Minerals that are easily broken down, such as bastnasite, are more desirable than those that are difficult to dissociate, such as allanite. In general, producing deposits contain REE-bearing min¬erals that are relatively easy to concentrate because of coarse grain size or other attributes. Acid mine drainage waters generated in the uranium deposit Curilo, Bulgaria, were treated by means of a pilot-scale passive system consisting of an alkalizing limestone drain, a permeable multibarrier for microbial dissimilatory sulphate reduction, biosorption and chemical neutralization, and a natural wetland, connected in a series. The waters had pH in the range of about 2.5 ? 4.1 and contained radionuclides (uranium, radium), heavy metals (copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese), arsenic and sulphates in concentrations usually much higher than the relevant permissible levels for waters intended for use in the agriculture and/or industry. The water flow rate through the passive system varied in the range of about 5 ? 15 m3/24 h, reflecting water residence times of about 60 to 20 hours. An efficient removal of pollutants was achieved by this system during the different climatic seasons, even during the cold winter days at external air and water temperatures close to 0°C. The removal was connected with different mechanisms but the microbial sulphate reduction played the main role during the warmer months of the year. However, during the cold winter days the removal of pollutants was due mainly to their sorption by the solid dead plant biomass (cow manure, plant compost, straw) present in the multibarrier as well as to their precipitation as a result of chemical neutralization caused by crushed limestone.

The construction involved in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Contract No. lK0011 (K-1), encompassed some 2,621 meters of single track parallel tube rapid transit tunnels, 335 meters of cut-cover subway station and appurtenant ventilation structures at each end, and a fan shaft at approximately the mid point of the tunnels. The construction contract was awarded June 7, 1974 to a Joint Venture consisting of Intercounty Construction Corporation, Hyattsville, Maryland, and S $ M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio. The former being responsible for performing the cut and cover construction, and the latter being charged with constructing the running tunnels and fan shaft at their mid point. (See Fig. 1) The problems of mining and supporting, the 183 meters of twin tunnels just east of Court House Square Station, by unique mixed face and soft ground mining methods is the main subject of this report, although a general review of the tunnels in their entirety, as well as the geology encountered in the excavations, is presented to give a better overall setting for the problems encountered. A feasibility seismic refraction and reflection field survey was conducted at the U. S. Borax Company open-pit mine, Boron, California by the writers during the weekend of March 13 and 14, 1976. This field survey was carried out as a preliminary investigation primarily for the purpose of evaluating and establishing the ability of such geophysical techniques to locate and outline the subsurface openings of the old room-and-pillar mining under the present open-pit. The value of such knowledge about the old underground workings is directly related to the safe and economical operation of the open-pit mine for the company. Although mine maps of the old underground workings are available at the mine, the extent of roof and wall cavings and the present condition of the old underground openings are unknown. Owen and Suhler (2) are the first investigators who used electromagnetic methods, Pulse-Echo System, and electric resistivity measurement to solve the problem without success. A few years later, Herzig and Owen (1) attempted to solve the problem with application of earth resistivity measurement method with unfavorable results. The U. S. Borax Company carried out an extensive study for slope failure problems of the open-pit with application of dipmeter measurements. However, the slope stability study was not correlated to the old underground openings lying under the present open-pit (3).

Deeply buried coal seams [greater than 3000 ft (914 m)] are difficult and sometimes hazardous to test and complete due to coal sloughing, formation pressure anomalies and coal fine generation. Data collected while stimulating two deep coalbed methane wells located at the Gas Research Institute/Resource Enter¬prises, Inc. "Deep Coal Sean Project" test site in the Piceance Basin, Colorado, is presented in this paper. A single thick coal seam was completed openhole in each well. Core data, reservoir data, in-situ stress measurements, and pre-stimulation calibration test data were collected at the site to use in the design of the fracture stimulation treatments for both wells. A nitrogen foam fracture fluid treatment was selected for the first well and a linear gelled water for the second well. Treatment pressures were monitored with a downhole quartz pressure transducer. Atypically high treating pressures were observed, possibly indicating coal fines plugging at the fracture tip or increase in fluid viscosity caused by interaction of the generated coal fines with the fracturefl uid. In addition, a comprehensive fracture diagnostic effort was employed during the fracturing of the second well; namely, triaxial borehole seismic, seismic televiewer, hydraulic impedance monitoring, gamma ray log (in conjunction with radioactive additives in the sand), and temperature log. The results indicate a vertical fracture was created parallel to the face cleat as expected.

The past decade has witnessed an unprecendented proliferation of groundwater computer models. Some of these numerical models were developed for the purpose of simulating groundwater movement in mining environments and predicting inflow rates into active mines. However, a general acceptance of these models as routine planning tools by the mining industry has been slow. Until recently, the major use of these models in the industry is by consultants. There are several reasons that have contributed to this situation. Some of these factors - include scarcity or non-existence of an appropriate data base information required for executing these models, the difficulty and costs involved in acquiring data, and the fact that the instructions for using these models are often too involved and time consuming. Today, however, the state-of-the-art technology has been advanced to a level where numerical models can be routinely used to simulate and predict inflow rates into active mining environments. Such environments include highly fractured (longwall) and deforming flow media. Features integrated into these comprehensive and yet easy to use models are double-porosity-pressure, multiphase, and non-darcian flow conditions. This paper reviews the role that computer modeling has played in mining-related operations by presenting several case studies and the state-of-the-art tools currently in use. Included will be some of the practical field applications that have been compiled during the past decade.

INTRODUCTION Metal electrodeposition processes are of fundamental technological importance to a number of fields. Electrorefining, electrowinning, electroplating, and electrogalvanizing have all been the subject of intense study for over a century. More recently, electrochem- ical deposition has played a critical role in advances in microelectronics and lately has been an enabling technology for the production of certain nanostructured materials. Electrometallurgists have most frequently been concerned with the structure and morphology of massive deposits. For example, in metal recovery steps such as electrorefining and electrowinning, deposits demonstrating adherent coarse-grained characteristics are most desirable. In the case of electroplating, a bright fine-grained, tenacious and strongly adherent deposit is required. The fabrication of microelectronic devices and the production of nanoscale structures such as nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanorods requires a keen understanding of early stage deposition effects. The initial stages of metal deposition, usually referred to as electroclystallization, are fundamentally linked to nucleation and growth phenomena. Early stage deposits are typically very ordered. Whereas, bulk metal deposition structures are much more ran- dom. Longwall mining is considered to be the most efficient underground coal-mining technique in terms of coal extraction ratio, production rate and safety standards. Due to the increasing demand for higher coal production, the recent trends have been to use wider panels and to maintain a faster face movement. For these reasons, longwall mining can result in unexpected roof falls, excessive face convergence, shield damage and numerous maintenance problems, which can cause sudden interruption of coal production as well as serious safety hazards. Recent work at the University of Alabama has been dedicated to the development of a longwall strata-control and maintenance system that can integrate real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis, forecasting and warning modules. This integrated system has been called LoSCoMS. The main objective of the system is to provide minute-by-minute stability and maintenance information such as the following: high-load, low-setting pressure, leg leakage, etc.; the analysis of various mining and geological parameters to determine past and present roof characteristics; and the forecasting of loading patterns for the following mining cycles, the next periodic weighting, etc. By using this unique system, mine operations personnel are well aware of past, present and future roof-loading patterns at the longwall face and, thus, proper safety measures can be taken ahead of time.

Current mineral industry trends toward handling the high tonnages of lower grade ore and tailings retreat lead to a continuing need for large volume flotation cells. The benefits which accompany the larger cell flotation circuit include reduced capital cost, less mill floor space, reduced operational complexity, and less maintenance, provided the metallurgical performance and solids suspension capability of the cell are not compromised. This study reviews development considerations pertinent to large mechanical air induction type flotation cells from the standpoint of cell internal hydrodynamic characteristics and metallurgical performance. While the importance of process related factors such as chemical usage, pH control, solids size and loading, and circuit arrangement cannot be denied, this study will emphasize the relationship of cell size (volume), mechanism geometry (impeller diameter), and mechanism operating conditions (rotor speed and submergence), to air transfer, liquid circulation, liquid "rise velocity" and mechanism power draw. Specific hydraulic performance maps for large capacity 300 and 500 cu ft flotation cells will be reviewed in terms of the relationship between the operational variables and the air and liquid flow conditions within the cell. Metallurgical results, obtained under plant operating conditions for 300 and 500 cu ft cells, are included to illustrate the metallurgical performance similarity of flotation cells which follow hydrodynamic scale-up criteria set forth in this investigation.
