The Greek Cement Industry is a vital sector of our economy. With an annual production of cement over 15.5 million tonnes, it contributes significantly to the national gross domestic product (G.D.P.). The cement industry, as other mineralogical transformation process industries (lime, glass, ceramics, extractive metallurgy etc.), is high energy intensive. Each tonne of cement produced requires not only large amounts of fuels (coal, fuel oil), but additionally a significant quantity of electrical power as well. All fuels consumed by the Greek Cement Industry are imported and energy accounts for one third of the cement production cost. Therefore, it is of interest of the community and the industry to increase energy efficiency, to reduce the quantities of fuels consumed in the cement manufacturing process. It is also known that like almost all manufacturing processes, the cement industry produces large amounts of CO2 (combustion of fuels, de-carbonization of limestone and use to electricity). The utilization of wastes (principally as alternative fuels, scrap tires, spent solvents etc.) is compatible with the general principles of waste management and it is also a common practice in other European and developed countries. In the present paper the economic, social and environmental benefits provided by the recycle process of the various wastes in the Greek cement plants are extensively analyzed. From the whole work, it was concluded that such a practice: - replaces a significant percentage of imported fossil fuels in the cement manufacturing process, - maximizes the recovery of energy and also ensures their safe disposal, - produces overall environmental benefits by reducing releases to air, water and land, - prevents resource depletion of valuable non-renewable fossil fuels, - overcomes the need for the construction of dedicated incineration facilities, - contributes positively to the principles of the sustainable development.

Part two of this three part series looks at explosives use in open-pit and underground mining operations. Part three, next month, will discuss the transportation, storage, handling, and destruction of explosives. Larger ore bodies, lower grade deposits, and more difficult geologic conditions have led to changes in blasting products, techniques, and field practices in both open-pit and underground metal mines. Pit blasting operations must consider the material's geology, needed fragmentation for the material, and hole diameter and depth-as well as the traditional consideration of the type of explosive used. With underground mines, various blasting aspects of burn, angle, and machine cuts must be considered for an efficient and safe operation. Of the factors related to open-pit blasting, geology of the material is most important. Many theories relating to sonic velocity and rock hardness are used to determine needed explosives ratios. Extensive field tests are necessary to determine these factors. In most cases, results assume that the material to be broken is homogenous. The drilling penetration rate is sometimes used as a guide to determine rock hardness; however, this is not necessarily a good idea. In many cases, a very hard, brittle rock will blast with less difficulty than a soft, spongy rock. The formation's stratification is also important. In thinly laminated horizontal seams, rock will usually break and adequately fragment with relatively large burdens and spacings using a low explosives ratio. Massive formations with few laminations require close burdens and spacings and a high explosives ratio. When the stratification is pitched on a severe angle, it is usually preferable to develop the pit face 90°-but no less than 45°-to the stratification. If the face must be developed parallel to the stratification, burdens and spacings must be reduced and the angle drilling that will conform to the angle of the lamination should be given serious consideration.

Istanbul is the bigest metropolitan city of Turkey with more than 15 millions of population and construction activities are steadly increasing with respect to that increase in population. In this papaer petrographical, physico-mechanical properties of natural aggregate mines from west, (Tekirdag) to East, Izmit (Gebze) 'will be summarized in connection with the concrete production. However the locations suitable for aggregate production in these area as; Paleozoic aged sandstones (Ayazaga, Cendere, Mahmutbey areas), Permb-Carboniferous aged limestones (Cebeciköy area), Triassic limes tones (Ömerli-Gebze areas) and Eosen limestones (Çatalca area), Plio-Quaternary aged volcanic basalts (Tekirdag, Çorlu, Beykoz areas). Plio-quaternary aged, fine grained aggregates within sandy formations are mined in Silivri-Sinekli area, Catalca-Ormanali area, Agacli-Akpinar (Kemerburgaz area) and Sile-Karakiraz-Sahilköy areas. Sandstones mineralogically contain mainly of Quartz+Feldspar and less amount of Mica (biotite+muscovite) rich with slica content and sedimentary origined. Especially limestones are cryptocrystaline textured, unique mineral composed of calcite and secondary have Dolomite ± (Quartz+Albite). Basalts are microlitic textured and contain Olivine+Pyroxene+Plagioclase. Chemically basalts rich with Fe and Mg and also volcanic origined. Sands are fine grained natural aggregates mainly contain semiangled, rounded minerals and rock fragments. Mineralogically have Quartz + Feldspar ± pyroxene+ ambhibole ±garnet and less amount of epidote ± magnetite ± hematite. Different rocks, used in aggregates such as limestones, sandstones-sands and basalts, supply varied concrete strength because of their mineralogical composition and characteristics of textures. Moreover, Basalts (Karatepe area) are good example for the higgest concrete strength (1017-1895 sc; kg/cm2) in our study area because of their clambed mineralogical apperance such as intersertal texture. As the result of extensive field and comparative laboratuary studies, the effect of petrographic, physical, mechanical properties of the aggregates on concrete srtength is extensivelly discussed in this paper.

In this study, the formation of zeolites around Kizkapan and Karlikoy villages (Sothwest Kesan) were investigated. In this region, stratigrafically, Upper Eocene Kesan Formation, i.e. sandstone and rarely shale are observed at the bottom. Early Middle-Oligocene Yenimuhacir Formation is composed of sandstone, marl and tuffs. The zeolitisation is determined in the dasitic tuffs of the Yenimuhacir Formation. In this tuffs' zone, alteration had primarily resulted in zeolites, mainly mordenite, heulandite-clinoptiIolite. Silicification and alteration to clay minerals are also common. The Miocene-Pliocene Ergene Formation and alluvium deposits are the top units in the area. In the studied area, zeolite occurences have economic importance. The results show that successively rapid and short term periods are responsible for the clinoptilolite-heuylandite formations. The homogene chemistry of the solutions may be evaluated for a possible successive zeolitisation period. Multi-periodic vocanic activity and also circulation of thermal water had resulted in a continous dissolution of volcanic glass; moreover, resulted in the formation of suitable conditions of zeolite formation. The mineral crystallization sequences and alteration products as zeolites within the wall-rock, circulated solution reaction depends on a serie of parameters such as chemical composition of both initial materials and volcanic solutions during rock¬solution interaction period. The previous researches and the chemical studies support our results and observations in the studied area. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of zeolitisation and to explain the formation steps of zeolitisation in Kesan Area by considering the content and distribution of major and minor elements determined in zeolite bearing tuffs. The chemical structures of both zeolite bearing volcanics and zeolite minerals are compared to the results of previous studies. Two dimentional behaviours of major and minor elements were discussed in order to caracterize zeolitisation development and to postulate a probable formation type of zeolitic alteration.

CANMET has developed a simple yet very effective tracer gas method to test the efficiency of stench gas emergency warning systems which can easily be performed by mine personnel. This test method uses sulphur hexafluoride (SF,) as a surrogate for such stench gases as ethyl mercaptan. The test has many advantages: it is non-disruptive to production because SF, is odourless, colourless; it is safe to use as it is inert and only a small volume, insufficient to reduce oxygen levels, is necessary to dope the air with a measurable concentration; and most importantly it provides definitive results to assess the adequacy of the warning system. Specific findings of these tests have included, over doping sections of the mine and subsequent production loss due to sickness, the warning being ignored, the injection period being too short, excessive dispersion, and inadequate notification times. The simple test protocol involves releasing a known volume of the SF, under similar circumstances to those of the stench gas, and then sampling for its presence downstream. These samples are collected in air-tight syringes which are then analyzed in a laboratory with a gas chromatograph. By direct proportion, between the size of the stench and tracer gas releases, it is possible to convert the SF, concentration into equivalent stench gas concentrations profiles. From these, it is possible to define, the initial arrival time of the gas, the time it takes to reach a "target" notification concentration, whether the gas peak will exceed TWAEV, STEV and CEV exposure limits, and the duration of the peak above these levels. Since 1993, this test protocol has been employed a total of eight times on four different Canadian mine properties and the results are being used to optimize the stench gas release system with respect to volume of gas used, duration of injection, and number of injection locations.

The use o f cyanide to extract gold from ores is widespread. In the process of extracting gold, cyanide may form metal cyanide complexes with a variety of other metals present in the ore. This study was carried out to investigate the biodegradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex and tetracyanonickelate under varying pH and nutrient additions. Detailed studies using shake flask cultures and bioreactors showed that naturally occurring bacteria residing on gold-leach-pad ore uti¬lized the Cu(I)-cyanide complex (CuCN) and tetracyano-nickelate, Na2(NiCN4), as carbon and/or nitrogen sources. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and/or cyanate (CNO-) accumulated in solution as the metal cyanide complexes were degraded. The accumulation of cyanate as a product is a concern due to its toxicity. Degradation rates were increased if a growth substrate (peptone, 0.1%) was added to the medium or if bioreactors were primed with peptone before addition of the metal-cyanide complex. Tetracyanonickelate was degraded at pH 8 without added peptone, but it was not degraded at pH 10. The addition of peptone was required for degradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex at pH 8 and pH 10. At pH 8, the addition of peptone resulted in the accumulation of cyanate, whereas, at pH 10, cyanate was not detected in the cultures. Biodegradation of metal-cyanide complexes was faster (approximately 1.5 to ten times faster) in bioreactors than in shake flask cultures. The addition of peptone was not required for degradation of metal-cyanide complexes in bioreactors. However, priming the bioreaetor with peptone resulted in higher metal-cyanide degradation rates over multiple cycles.

One of the principal responsibilities of the California State Geologist is to provide local governments with maps and information regarding mineral resource occurrences within their jurisdiction. The primary objective of this effort is to furnish basic data that is essential in planning for and accommodating wise development of mineral deposits that are important to the economic well-being of the region, state, and nation. Local government agencies are required by law to incorporate the information provided by the State Geologist into their general plans and formulate mineral resource management policies that emphasize conservation and development of mineral deposits. The Mineral Land Classification program was initiated by the State Geologist in 1977 under authority of the California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA). To date, about 33,000 square miles of land have been classified for mineral resource potential. Most of the mineral land mapping has been conducted in three principal areas: (1) metropolitan areas of the state where urban encroachment has greatly diminished available supplies of construction aggregate; (2) Sierra Nevada foothills, a region that is undergoing dramatic population increases; and (3) the Mojave Desert and Great Basin regions, where large Federal land withdrawals are pending that could preclude mining. Mineral land classification studies address the overall mineral potential of a region through the identification of local and regional geologic factors that control or influence the formation of mineral deposits. These studies are field-intensive surveys that enable project geologists to gain first-hand knowledge about the nature and distribution of mineral deposits in a given area and portray that information accurately in map form. This paper summarizes the progress made in the Mineral Land Classification program in the metropolitan, Sierra Nevada foothills, and the Mojave Desert/Great Basin regions of California. Selected projects from each area are discussed in detail.

The design of an underground mining operation requires the integration of transportation, ventilation, ground control, and mining methods to form a system which provides the highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel; the lowest cost per ton of product; the most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use; the maximum percent recovery of the reserve, consistent with cost and subsidence rights; and the minimum disturbance to the environment. The selection of mining method is generally the controlling factor in overall mine design. Some important considerations in the choice of mining method are : 1) Depth of cover over the coal seam. 2) Strength and thickness of rock strata in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam, including thickness, nature and location of impurities or irregularities, dip (or pitch), nature and direction of cleavage, hardness, and structural strength of the coal. 4) Nature and strength of the immediate roof (top) over the coal seam. 5) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 6) Presence and amount of explosive gas (methane). 7) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 8) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. 9) Any restrictions on recovery required for subsidence control. Topographical and geological reports and maps of the area are usually available from state and federal geological surveys, and contain excellent general information to guide more detailed investigations. Exploratory drilling, and the plotting and analysis of the information thus obtained, are essential steps in any development program, and aid in the correlation and evaluation of information gained by other means. Other good sources of information are operating coal mines that may be in the same seam in nearby properties. Such mines may indicate in advance much about roof control, drainage, ventilation, and other mining problems.

Growing concerns of climate change and its potential association with the release of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere have prompted possible legislation which would require minimization of greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon dioxide and methane, both of which largely contribute to the greenhouse effect, have direct links to the fossil energy industry sector. Specifically, the combustion of one ton of coal produces between one and three tons of carbon dioxide, dependent upon the carbon content and heating value of the combusted coal. Additionally, coal mine methane (CMM) released through a mine?s ventilation system has a radiative trapping impact approximately 20 times greater than that of an equivalent mass of carbon dioxide. The capture of coalbed methane (CBM) prior to the mining process and its utilization as an alternative energy source provides the possibility of a decreased carbon footprint. Domestically, the past 25 years have seen a significant expansion of the CBM industry. Internationally, in developing countries such as China, the need for western coal degasification technology is growing. A collaborative, international effort will be required to initiate a recognizable decrease in global greenhouse gas emissions. This paper identifies the potential decrease in equivalent carbon dioxide emissions through effective degasification at a hypothetical longwall mine located in China. Advanced, three-dimensional gas reservoir simulation software will be utilized to determine the maximum feasible CBM recovery in a low permeability, high gas content reservoir prior to the mining process.

Glass is the most unique substance which man has made. It is understood that Phoenician sailors playing on the beach in Mesopotanmia around 12000 BC, produced glass by the fusion of sand and soda in their campfire. Glass is unique for many reasons. However, let us consider the following. It is made of materials which are opaque and yet glass can be translucent, transparent, or opaque. It can be as soft as cotton or stronger than steel. It transmits light readily and yet is totally impervious to gases and liquids. It is chemically an inert, creates very little pollution in its manufacture. It is made of the most abundant raw materials on earth. It is readily recyclable and has little pollution in its disposal. Glass containers are made principally from sand (that is, silica), soda, which is sodium carbonate, and lime, which is calcium carbonate, plus decolorizers or colorants and cullet. The proportion of cullet, broken glass, in most glass tanks today is roughly 10 to 20% of the glass product. In most cases, the cullet used in the plant is glass from off-ware, or broken ware, which is a waste product within the plant. Cullet has the following advantages. It contains all of the raw materials normally used in a batch. It tends to melt at a lower temperature than batch, thus saving some fuel, and, finally, by forming a crust above the normal melting system, there is a tendency to cut down air pollution.

Six industry trends will have significant effect on the way mining equipment is designed and supported in the years ahead: 1. MINING IS MIGRATING TO LESSER DEVELOPED PARTS OF THE WORLD The global recession of the early 1980's drove down commodity prices and intensified cost competition. This caused a fairly dramatic trend in mining away from higher cost operations in developed countries to richer, lower cost deposits in developing countries. Miners operating in lesser developed parts of the world will place higher value on rugged, durable designs that can live in more difficult and sometimes abusive conditions. They need engines and power train systems that are more tolerant of a wide variation in fuel quality and oil specifications. They'll require machines that are simpler to operate, simpler to maintain, simpler to troubleshoot and simpler to repair. And they'll require creative means of support in getting technical information, parts and components to remote operational sites. Mining equipment in the future will be more durable and simple than it is today, and product support will grow in importance as purchasing criterion. 2. THE MINING INDUSTRY IS CONSOLIDATING An intense amount of corporate acquisition and industry consolidation activity is occurring, to the point that today just 50 mining companies account for 55% of the western world non-fuel mineral production. Consolidation will continue, leading in the future to an industry structure weighted heavily toward a few key global mining houses.

A laboratory study was carried out to evaluate the effect of oxygen and lead nitrate on the recovery of gold by cyanidation of a free milling gold ore, which contains 0.4 % copper as chalcopyrite. Efficient gold extraction is achieved only under specific conditions. The recovery of gold was increased from less than 90% to up to 98% by addition of lead nitrate. In the pre-leaching, the kinetics of oxidation of soluble sulphides are not an accurate indication for the length of the treatment. Even though the consumption of cyanide was reduced due to the inhibition of the dissolution of chalcopyrite by increasing additions of lead nitrate, cyanide consumption had to the held above 1.85 kg/t to maintain good recovery of gold. The continued addition of lead nitrate above 300 git had no impact on the recovery of gold. It was also found that the addition of lead nitrate at the start of cyanidation gave the same performance as when added during pre-leaching. The addition of oxygen increased the recovery of gold by 1.5%. The concentration ofNaCN had to be maintained in the range of700 mg/L because of the high concentration of copper in solution. The recovery of gold dropped significantly when the average NaCN concentration fell below 640 mg/L. Application of the findings of the laboratory study at the industrial scale led to improved plant performance.

Thin-seam mining presents unique challenges when management or economic conditions require significant productivity increases. These challenges can be further amplified depending on such factors as labor unions, federal and state regulations and market characteristics. This article explores the turnaround situation occurring at Tanoma Mining Co. (TMC), a medium-sized, underground coal mining company in central Pennsylvania. The company has used a systematic approach of improving management controls and direction, labor relations and communications to improve its cash flow from negative to positive within a projected five-year span. An intensive upgrade-rebuild-replacement program for mining equipment and systems has also been established to support other management activities. Discussion Thin-seam coal mining is an industry within the broader industry of coal mining. Thin seam mining faces the same cost pressures and engineering problems as its higher-seam competitors, without the advantages of moving volume per foot of extracted material. To stay at economic parity with others requires additional creativity within the management team to extract higher productivity gains from the existing workforce and mining systems. The Tanoma operation is a deep mine in Indiana County, PA, about one hour northeast of Pittsburgh. Coal is extracted from the Lower Kittanning "B" seam. INTRODUCTION Stillwater Tunnel construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 1973. The tunnel will be the site of an extensive program in rapid excavation research. This paper presents a progress report regarding our plans and relates the tentative decisions which have been made on how to carry out the research effort. The details are subject to revision as more input is obtained from other Government agencies interested in tunnel construction and from experts in industry and educational institutions. The objective of the research program is to bring about faster, less costly tunnel construction. This objective will be pursued through the development, improvement, and evaluation of various construction systems and investigative techniques. The need for this kind of program was recognized by the National Research Council, in its authoritative report "Rapid Excavation - Significance, Needs, Opportunities." (1) The Council advocated a federally funded $200 million, 10-year program to help meet the $69 billion market it expects in underground excavation between 1970 and 1990. The significance of tunnel construction to Reclamation is made clear by statistics of its tunneling experience and outlook. Reclamation has constructed 174 water conveyance tunnels totaling over 190 miles, Six tunnels are presently under construction which have a combined length of about 27 miles. There are on the books nine authorized, but unfunded tunnel projects totaling another 70 miles in length. Many more miles of tunnels are included in programs in various stages of investigation.

In reasonably dry rock, long-wave radar can theoretically explore to distances approaching 75 meters (250 ft). High-resolution radar reflections have already been demonstrated through 13 m of hard limestone, through 9 to 18 m of coal in place and through 225 m of rock salt, using only low-power experimental radar equipment. Radar reflections have been received through the rock from rough pillar walls, from faults, and from a slim, uncased, vertical drill hole. In three years of intermittent experimentation, the feasibility of rapid radar exploration of large volumes of rock, with portable equipment, in deep, wet workings has been demonstrated. With future, improved equipment the theoretical working range, of the order of 75m, is expected to be attained in most hard rocks. THE TECHNIQUE Fig. 1 illustrates an early "monocycle" radar system (1) set up in a coal mine. This radar equipment is entirely different from that employed for detecting distant objects through the atmosphere. However, the basic principle is the same: a pulse of electromagnetic energy is radiated by the transmitter, a portion is reflected by some "target" object embedded in the surrounding medium and some of this energy is collected by the receiving antenna. In the receiver, the pulse is amplified, is "stretched out in time" by a sampling process, and is displayed on the screen of a cathode-ray oscilloscope. Historian and storyteller, Duane Smith, will be the keynote speaker at the National Mining Hall of Fame's 10th anniversary induction banquet on Saturday, Sept. 6,1997 in the Museum Convention Center at Leadville, CO.Smith is a professor of history and southwest studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. He is also an award-winning author of 28 books about the West and mining. Hall of Fame Board Chairman Richard Moolick said the induction banquet event will mark the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum's 10th anniversary in its Leadville facility, a century-old Victorian schoolhouse. Karl Elers, chairman of Battle Mountain Gold in Houston, TX, will be the master of ceremonies. He is a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum's board of directors. The six inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be enshrined by Thomas Falkie, president of Berwind Natural Resources of Philadelphia, PA. He is also chairman of the Mining Hall's board of governors. The six inductees will join 132 mining greats who were previously honored. The black-tie (optional) banquet will be highlighted this year by guests who prefer to don 1890s dress for the occasion in the old silver-mining boomtown. A cocktail reception and open house will precede the banquet, with tours of the district and special events to follow on Sun- day, Sept. 7.

The increased use of continuous miners to extract thicker coal seams has necessitated the use of enhanced ventilation systems in the headings. Due to the increased face size, more ventilation is required to effectively dilute the liberated methane down to acceptable levels. If more air is directed to the face an increase in the entrainment of dust creates an increased potential for workers to be exposed to dust. To enable the ventilation systems to reduce the methane levels and the levels of the airborne dust the ventilation systems in the heading have to be carefully designed. The matter is made more complicated through the use of other ventilation methods like jet fans, air-moving sprayfans on the continuous miners and high capacity scrubbers on the continuous miners. To enable the design of a balanced ventilation system in seam heights of over five metres requires methods that consider the system in a three- dimensional manner rather than in a two-dimensional fashion. Through the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with appropriate methods of taking underground face ventilation readings these problems can be solved in a cost effective way. Using computer modelling, ventilation methods can be designed and assessed instead of using costly underground trials to test the alternatives. Use of this system has led to a higher level of ventilation design as well as a more effective method to combat the health and safety hazards in coal mine headings.

Today mine shaft and slope contracts include a greater amount of ancillary work such as level and pump stations, loading pockets, rotary and side dumps and connecting raises. This ancillary work requires the application of a number of construction methods often for short periods and often at short notice if the contractor is to maintain a profitable operation. In the next decade, the number of shafts that will be sunk by a boring method will outnumber those sunk by traditional methods. This will be particularly true of the deeper shafts where water problems are minimal. The increase of bored shaft work will not decrease the work completed by the shaft sinking contractor but it will change it. A greater emphasis will be placed on the speed of construction of station and other ancillary work. To meet this challenge the contractor requires full information on the ancillary work as well as the shaft work at an early date, preferably pre-bid. The two examples discussed in this paper illustrate the importance of early information. The two main factors of shaft ancillary work construction are sequence and ground support. This paper describes two examples completed recently by The Cementation Company of America Incorporated in Arizona. The first described is a Rotary Dump-Ore Pocket-Ore Pass complex and the second described is the excavation of the Main Station Level in a 2 Station-Loading Pocket-Ore Pass complex. Silicon nitride (Si3N4 ) is an advanced structural ceramic materia1 which is presently being considered for a number of potential engineering applications, particularly in heat engines, gas turbines, and electronics. With respect to other structural ceramics, silicon nitride has relatively low thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficients and a moderate elastic modulus. Thus, during thermal cycling the stresses developed in this material are lower than in other structural ceramics. At the present time silicon nitride is produced via three main processes: thermal decomposition of silicon imide or amide, treatment of silicon tetrachloride or silane vapour with ammonia and nitriding of silicon powder. These three methods of production are discussed with particular attention to the effect of morphology and phase content on the properties of the final product. In this work carbothermal production of silicon nitride has been studied in a high temperature resistance furnace. Compacted briquettes of silica and carbon were produced which were reacted in a nitrogen atmosphere. The optimum reaction temperature and the carbon to silica ratio were found to be 1425OC and ten to one, respectively. The presence of large amounts of ash in the reductant promoted the formation of silicon nitride. The specific surface area of the briquettes did not have a large effect over the range studied in the present work. Briquette seeding with small amounts of Si3N4 was effective in increasing the reaction rates.

The US Bureau of Mines undertook a study of those factors influencing worker escape from an outby coal mine fire. The results of this investigation were two-fold. First, those factors affecting escape from a mine fire were defined, and second, the relationships between these factors were identified. Although the individual components had been studied before, little information was available on their interdependence. Fault tree analysis was used to evaluate the miner escape scenario. After constructing the fault tree, a two-phase analysis of the tree was conducted. During the first phase, the minimal cutsets of the fault tree were identified and ranked. These sets were the smallest sequence of events leading to fatalities during the fire. This ranking revealed that reduced evacuation delays, improved self-rescuer training, and improved stopping construction were important in controlling fatalities during escape from the mine fire. The second phase involved additional analyses of the fault tree. These evaluations were started by first determining occurrence probabilities for each event in the fault tree. Two types of sensitivity analyses were then conducted. The first analysis dealt with changes in event probabilities and their impact on the likelihood of fatalities. The final sensitivity analysis considered dramatic reductions in the probability of fire fatalities. This revealed what event probability values were necessary to reach this level. These results have revealed various remedial actions that could be used to improve the survivability of an outby mine fire.
