Two 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in.) diameter raises, concrete-lined to 5.49 m (18 ft) inside diameter, were completed in 1978 at the Monterey Coal Company Number One Mine near Carlinville, Illinois, by Frontier-Kemper Constructors. These two raises are the largest in cross-section yet completed by full-face upreaming, and the success of this project is expected to increase the application of raise-boring to coal mine shaft construction. WHY 6.17 M (20 FT) DIAMETER ? Raise boring is well accepted in the metal mining industry for a variety of applications, and is gaining in acceptance in the civil works construction industry. The use of raise boring to construct vertical openings for coal mines has not been as widely accepted, even though coal mining requires, per mine, the greatest number of openings to the surface of any underground activity. Several factors have influenced the low utilization of raise boring in coal mining: 1. Coal mine shafts must often be of large diameter to pass the required high volumes of ventilation air at acceptably low water gage pressures. Cross-sectional areas of finished shafts exceeding 23.23 sq m (250 sq ft) are common. 2. The life of ventilation shafts is comparatively long, and the typical sedimentary strata overlying coal seams normally require that the shafts be lined. Shafts on the intake ventilation circuit must have permanent water-tight linings. 3. Unconsolidated overburden at the surface is often thick, and as reaming cannot be safely utilized in unconsolidated material,

The Alcan Smelter project at Lynemouth on the Northumbrian coast draws cooling water for the power station through shafts and tunnels from the North Sea. The sea at this part of the coast is frequently very rough and even in calm weather the coastal currents are strong. The adjacent coal mine makes use of these currents to disperse colliery waste and discharges into the sea some thirty thousand tons each week. In consequence the sea bed is continuously shifting and the sea is black and turbid. Construction of sea shafts under these conditions presents difficulties as drilling from a floating vessel is hazardous and sea bed activity of divers is greatly hindered by the entire absence of visibility. After considering several alternatives a method of construction was agreed with the Consultants in which the drilling and also the lining of the shaft would be completed in sequence from an eight legged work barge (GEM 126). Each shaft would be drilled to full depth and a steel cylinder, with its ends closed temporarily, would be lowered into the hole and grouted into the formation to form a full-length permanent lining. The bell mouth for each shaft would be constructed in advance to form part of the cylindrical casing. On interception of the shaft by its appropriate tunnel the lower end of the cylindrical casing would be cut away and the internal walling of the shaft installed from below. After completion of construction the shafts and tunnels would be flooded and the bell mouth sealing covers removed by divers.

Comminution of various materials can be achieved in grinding equipment by nipping, impact, attrition, or a combination of these actions. Pna mills also known as edgerunners, chasers, and mullers-are classified as a nipping machine. The essential features of this type of grinding machine are rollers or mullers that turn on a horizontal axis while rating on the bed of material in the pan. Ploughs are used to direct the unground material to the center of the pan. Grinding may be accomplished wet or dry. Aritres, Chilean mills, and Huntington mills are types of pan mills. Ring roll and ring Ml mills, another type of nipping machine, were developed for grinding smaller particles of intermediate hardness to product sizes of about 100 pm. They were designed to attempt to reduce the cost of similar size reduction in ball mills and have been widely used to pulverize coal for power-plant facilities. Impact Machines Grinding machines that can be classified as impact mills include: hammer, cage, centrifugal, vibratory, pin, and stamp mills. The distinctive feature of an impact mill is that it has a fast-moving part that transfers some of its kinetic energy to the material particles by direct contact so that internal stresses are created in the particles. The Reitz Disintegrator is an example of an impact mill. It has rigidly mounted hammers attached to a vertical shaft that rotates in close proximity to horizontally mounted screens. Most copper mines produce both ore and low-grade "leach" rock or acid waters that contain recoverable copper. The sulfide ores pre¬dominate, and a portion that is too low grade for milling to produce concentrates for smelting, but has to be mined and trucked away anyhow, may be leached successfully with acid in dumps. Most of this leach material consists of sulfides and silicates or carbonates, and if the gangue is such that it consumes a high quantity of acid, this factor may rule out a leach operation. There are also valuable deposits that contain mostly acid-soluble copper, or occasional sulfide ores from which a sulfide concentrate can be roasted and acid-leached to produce a copper-bearing solution. Finally, there are milling ores in which the lesser part of the copper is acid-soluble and can be precipitated with iron or synthetic inorganic precipitants that produce metallic copper or copper sulfides that will float with the sulfides. Ordinarily, ores that contain copper associated with the sulfur ion, such as in the minerals chalcopyrite, chalcocite, bornite (and others), are milled to produce a 25-30% Cu concentrate for smelting, while a lesser amount of acid-soluble copper may be converted from solution to cement copper on iron scrap. A fast-growing percentage of such copper, however, is removed from solution with exchange resins or organic compounds in organic carriers such as kerosene (solvent extraction), then eluted with strong acid and subjected to electrolytic precipitation either in marketable form or as anodes that can be refined further. From the point of view of conventional copper smelting, copper flotation concentrates and cement copper are of chief interest in this chapter. Table I is a condensed open schedule for concentrates that generally run between 25 and 35% copper, and much less frequently as low as 12-15% or as high as 65-75% copper, the former being due to intimate relationship with pyrite (like the former United Verde Extension), and the latter representing such ores as the Bolivian Coro¬coro ore in which the copper is in the form of chalcocite in sandstone. These extremes are no longer common. When they occur, a special purchase schedule has to be negotiated. Included in Table 1, copper precipitates (cement copper) generally run from 70-85%a copper, and the same basic purchase schedule is used as with flotation concentrates. Sulfide Flotation Concentrates The sulfide copper concentrate produced in the mill as a flotation froth, with water then added for transportation of the heavy mineral particles from the flotation cells to thickeners, may run 60-80% water by weight, and the removal of water down to 25-50% by weight by means of thickeners, followed by further dewatering by continuous vacuum filters to 7-18% moisture by weight (depending on size of solids by screen analysis and also by content of clay) is a critical operation. Mill operators would like to produce a filter cake with 7-9% moisture content, but even with the help of steam on the filter this desirable condition is seldom realized when the concentrate is as fine as 80% -325 mesh. More commonly, the final concentrate is reground in pro- to produce best copper recovery and grade of concentrate (or molybdenite separation). In those cases, increasingly frequent, the filter product may not be a cake at all, but a mud that is hard to handle-even requiring a thermal dryer. Greater difficulty of form¬ing a manageable cake often comes from the copper-molybdenum separation by flotation, because the alkaline sulfides and hydrosulfides, or cyanide, or other similar reagents used for the separation, may leave the now relatively molybdenite-free copper concentrate even more difficult to filter. Handling a wet filter cake is difficult enough when its destination is only a short distance away-a matter of yards rather than miles. In those cases the filter cake may be thermally dried near the point of production, using rotary or multiple hearth, or fluidized-bed dryers. Alternatively, the concentrate may be pumped or carried in slurry form to the smelter and filtered there, or it may be spray-dried and compacted. For transportation to a smelter just a few miles to a few thousand miles away by ship or railroad other factors may be important, such as: in shipping by sea, avoidance of spontaneous combustion; in shipping by rail, losses by leakage if too wet or by wind and sun if too dry. It is the responsibility of the millman-usually the mill superinten¬dent-to make sure that his concentrates are in satisfactory condition when they leave the mill so that they meet these requirements: 1) They must have been accurately sampled and dry-weighed, the latter meaning that a moisture determination and gross weight must have been taken. 2) They must be dried sufficiently when necessary to prepare them for safe transportation. 3) They must arrive at the smelter with reasonable likelihood that they can be check-weighed and sampled fairly and equitably,

In Oct. 1981, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corp. began producing silver bullion from the Escalante mine and mill complex, located in southwestern Utah. Current in-place reserves are estimated at 2.42 Mt (2.67 million st) of ore, containing about 936 t (33 million oz) of silver at an average grade of 428.5 g/t (12.5 oz/st). The vein-type deposit is being mined underground through a decline that is currently 864 m (2,835 ft) in length, but will ultimately be at least 1.5 km (5,100 ft) long. The mine is completely mechanized with rubber-tired equipment, and is producing 680 t/d (750 stpd) of ore, five days a week, or 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy). Additional capacity is available. The cyanide leach mill and associated refinery are presently producing 4.35 t/month (140,000 oz/month) of silver bullion-an an¬nual rate of about 52.25 t (1.68 million oz). With minor modifications, the mill can produce up to about 70 t/a (2.25 million oz/year), and expansion is currently underway. History The Escalante property is located 68 km (42 miles) west of Cedar City, UT, on the west side of the Escalante Valley, where the vein forms a gentle ridge in an area of low, rolling hills. For years, the vein has been the object of considerable exploration, but never became more than a sporadic producer, primarily due to low silver prices. Heber Holt of Enterprise, UT, staked the original four claims in 1896; they were patented in 1910. During the next 48 years, limited exploration and mining activity was conducted on the property. Systematic evaluation and development did not, however, begin until March 1958, when Samuel S. Arentz, a prominent mining engineer and consultant, formed several joint ventures with mining and oil companies that conducted drilling, drifting, mining, and water drawdown tests on the property. However, it remained uneconomic, principally because of low silver prices and costs for pumping large flows of underground water. In 1975, Ranchers obtained an option on the property and in 1979 began a drilling program. As of May 1982, the company had drilled 70 core holes, bringing the number of exploratory holes drilled on the property to 138. Test mining began in 1979 as silver prices increased, and full mine development began in 1980. Mill construction began in Sept. 1980, and on Aug 29, 1981, the first ore was fed to the mill.

Introduction From 1973 through 1986, a total of 12 fires involving oil-flooded rotary screw compressors (OFRSC) were reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Most of these incidents were attributed to faulty or by-passed safeguards, or improper maintenance. The cause of a fire in an OFRSC is unique when compared to other types of compressors. A compressor inspection checklist is provided here that can be referenced when conducting regularly scheduled maintenance operations. This checklist and a well-planned program of periodic training and maintenance should help minimize the probability of fires and explosions in OFRSC's. Operation A rotary screw compressor operates on the principle of positive displacement of air. Compressed air in this type of compressor is produced by the meshing of two helical rotors, or screws, as they rotate within a steel housing called a stator. The male rotor normally has four lobes and is driven either directly or indirectly - through a gear assembly - by a motor. It intermeshes with a female rotor having six cavities. Figure 1 explains the compression mechanism: (1) Atmospheric air is drawn into the stator by the suction action of the two rapidly rotating rotors. (2) As the rotors rotate past the intake port, air is trapped in the stator and in the cavities between the rotors. (3) Further movement of the rotors causes an increased reduction in volume, compressing the entrapped air. (4) Compressed air is expelled at the discharge port in the bottom of the stator at a pressure and quantity determined by the particular compressor rotor design parameters, such as length, diameter, and speed. Radial bearings on the male and female rotors compensate for radial loading on the shaft and position the rotors within the stator. Thrust bearings on the discharge end of the compressor prevent rotor misalignment due to thrust developed during the compression cycle. This design prevents the male and female rotors from making contact with each other or the stator. A clearance of 0.07 to 0.1 mm (0.003 to 0.005 in.) exists between the two rotors and the stator. For this reason, there is virtually no wear on the rotors or stator, and the unit is relatively maintenance-free. Oil is injected into the compressor and serves to cool, seal, and lubricate. When air is compressed from atmospheric pressure to some higher discharge pressure, a specific amount of heat is produced. This heat is sometimes referred to as the adiabatic heat of compression. Pipe canopies continue to gain momentum as a reliable methodology for construction of excavations below critical facilities with minimal surface settlement tolerances, such as railroads or roadways. Two tunnel projects designed by Kilduff Underground Engineering in the Salt Lake City, UT area, each at varying stages of completion, had project design criteria for selection of a tunneling methodology to minimize surface settlement. Both projects consist of a pedestrian tunnel, one crossing beneath a major roadway in downtown Salt Lake City and the second beneath UPRR tracks. Both projects were in difficult, coarse alluvium/fan ground conditions with project criteria that resulted in minimal cover above the tunnel. For each project, a pre-support pipe canopy was designed, requiring the placement of steel, canopy pipes driven the extent of the tunnel length. The pipe canopy is installed using a trenchless technology and then excavated with SEM tunneling and shoring provided by traditional support of excavation methods. The pipe canopy pre-support method offers a low-impact method to install an underpass beneath critical structures by adding significant stiffness to the subgrade to mitigate surface settlement during the main tunnel excavation sequence. These case studies seek to communicate the challenges associated with pipe canopy installation in site-specific ground conditions and explains how these challenges were overcome. This paper aims to define the project risks and describes the pipe canopy methodology as a viable solution to mitigate surface settlement in low cover tunneling scenarios.

Microseismic passive velocity tomography is becoming an effective technology for large-scale mining-induced stress monitoring in underground mines, especially in the field of early warning of mining-induced hazards. Aiming at the problems of missing low-magnitude events in traditional microseismic monitoring, as well as the potential to increase the resolution of the tomograms in both time and space, a microseismic passive velocity tomography analysis method based on the template matching method was proposed. First, the template matching method was used to pick microseismic events. Then, the probabilistic, non-linear, global-search earthquake location method was used to locate the events and calculate travel time and travel distance. Finally, the fast-marching method was used to carry out passive velocity tomography analysis to image the movement of the abutment stress associated with the longwall. The results show that the selected templates can identify more microseismic events than the traditional microseismic analysis, and the variation trend of events in each day is consistent with the data from the traditional analysis. Using microseismic event locations, travel times and travel distance can effectively complete microseismic passive velocity tomography analysis in each day during the study period and can effectively identify the forward and side abutment stress zones of that longwall panel. This study provides a reference for the identification of mine-induced high stress zones, which has implications for hazard identification and mitigation, with increased resolution of the tomograms in time and space.

The environmental and economic problem created by pyrite in coal are well documented. The removal of pyritic sulfur prior to, or during, utilization has been the object of considerable research, however, much of this research has proceeded without a proper knowledge of the microscopic occurrences of pyrite in coal. This paper investigates the forms, occurrences, and variations in the distribution of pyrite in major West Virginia coal scan. Twenty-nine samples from twenty-two major west Virginia coal scans were selected for this study (see Table I). The samples were selected so as to be representative of the major coal producing areas of the state. All samples, except five, were collected at active surface mines, as indicated in Table I, and all except one were channel samples. The time interval between sampling and preparation of polished microblocks varied from two months to two years, though most were prepared within three months of collection. Grinding, screen¬ing, and riffling of samples to obtain 250 grams of -20 mesh coal for microscopic analysis strictly followed ASTM procedure D2013-72.

As mines continue to deepen and become more expansive, active monitoring of larger volumes of rock mass will become more critical to calibrate numerical simulations and to ensure the safety of underground workers. Monitoring larger volumes of rock mass requires low-cost sensors that are simple in construction and installation. In this study, a novel hybrid optical fiber cable (HOFC) designed for use in distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) via grouted boreholes was deployed to monitor a bulk mining operation in an underground metal mine. The HOFC was successfully used to monitor approximately 2.7 × 10 m3 of rock mass above excavations surrounding a pillar removal area in which six large pillars were removed simultaneously. A total of six measurement boreholes (maximum depth of 22 m) were used to measure strain along the optical fiber during the pillar removal operation using the HOFC, allowing for 70 individual strain measurement points, which were constructed for under one U.S. dollar each. Monitoring of the excavation area took place over a 44-day period after pillar removal. Extensional strains were noted in the areas closest to the removed pillars, while areas of compression were noted directly above the remaining pillar in the area. The results of the case study demonstrate that a low-cost optical fiber strain sensing network can be rapidly installed in a large excavation area and can provide highly sensitive strain measurements in a manner that would be cost prohibitive using other methods.

The Kori Kollo operation is owned by Empresa Minera Inti Raymi S.A., a Bolivian mining company. Inti Raymi is an eighty-five percent owned subsidiary of Battle Mountain Gold Company (BMGC). The remainder of Inti Raymi is held by Zeland Mines S.A., a Bolivian mining company. The project is located near the village of La Joya, approximately 220 km south of La Paz, and 40 km north west of Oruro on the Bolivian altiplano. Inti Raymi started a heap leach operation in 1985. By 1988, following several expansions, 4,000 tonnes per day of oxide ore were being treated. At this time drilling was started to delineate the larger sulfide orebody. A feasibility study for the development of this deposit was completed in 1990, and following project approval, the engineering design was started later that year. During this period orders were placed for the major items of mechanical equipment. In July 1991, Minproc Engineers Inc. was awarded a firm price contract to design and construct the 14,000 tonne per day sulfide ore process facility.

The objective of this research study was the investigation of heavy metal removal from wastewaters of the "SARAKA" stream by using low-cost materials. These wastewaters flow into Krivelj River and through the network of existing rivers into regional water reservoirs. Sawdust, cardboard and fly ash were used as reactive materials in laboratory studies. Sawdust was obtained from oak and fir-wood while fly ash from heating station Bor, bitter-oak and oak. Experiments were carried out using real Saraka stream wastewaters and the degree of removal for iron, copper, manganese and zinc was investigated. The content of these heavy metals in Saraka stream wastewaters was under the limit of III and IV class of water (Law on Water - Official Register of the Republic of Serbia). Parameters such as flow rate of water, pH and effluent volume, contact time between water and reactive material, etc, were monitored during the experiments. All used materials give satisfactory results for iron and other heavy metals removal; the highest degree of removal was obtained by using fly ash.

Appalachian coalfields have been the predominant source of quality coals since the inception of commercial mining in the United States. In a broad sense, Appalachian coalfields can be considered those east of the Mississippi River, representing about 55% of total US coal production. In this special feature on Appalachia in MINING ENGINEERING, emphasis is given to the four coal-producing states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and (eastern) Kentucky. These four states produce more than 90% of the coal from the total Appalachian region, or about 40% of the total US coal production. Historically, Appalachia has been the principal source of coal for domestic industries and for export. There have been numerous fluctuations in the Appalachian coal industry during the past 20 years. Appalachia was affected by cyclical and structural changes in various industries, particularly the US steel industry, and changing world coal markets. It was also the region of more mine worker labor stoppages than other parts of the country. In general, the factors that affected Appalachian coal production over time are identical to those that determined changes in coal production nationally.

Establishment and monitoring of revegetation in areas affected by mining activities is quite often a difficult task. The efficiency of the scheme applied can be substantially improved by using simple adequate indicators so that progress and trends can be plotted, elucidated and assessed over time. Sustainable revegetation management indicators should take into account soil quality and area characteristics, as well as social, economic and political aspects. In the present paper an interactive prototype Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) is presented. The system, based on methodological studies, has been designed to identify and interpret indicators that can be used for the evaluation of revegetation efficiency. It provides a platform for formulating indicators describing biophysical, socio-cultural and economic processes during the entire revegetation period. It integrates modular assessment, database management sub-systems and Geographical Information System (GIS). It is structured in a way that takes into account the project environment, soil quality, land characteristics, data acquisition control, output engines and spatial analysis. The output generates visual quality diagrams and interactive attribute quality maps that elucidate revegetation issues.

An investigation was conducted to determine the minimum number of samples that must be studied by image analysis of polished sections to characterize a mill product and determine the apparent mineral liberation. It was found that a representative polished section cannot be prepared from an unscreened sample that has a wide size range of particles. Similarly, individual screened fractions are not representative of the sample because minerals are partitioned during screening, and the quantities of soft brittle minerals are increased in fine grained fractions, whereas the quantities of hard minerals are increased in coarse grained fractions. It is assumed that results obtained by combining data for a series of narrow size range screened fractions (one Tyler size range) are representative of the sample, and relatively accurate apparent mineral liberation data can be obtained for a mill product by analyzing each fraction and combining the data. Somewhat less accurate data would be obtained by analyzing a series of screened fractions that have a wider size range of particles (five Tyler size ranges).

The performance characteristics of a multigravity separator for the recovery of heavy minerals of lead, zinc, copper and silver from a lead rougher-flotation concentrate were studied. Factorially designed experiments were carried out on three operating variables, i.e., the amount of wash water, the drum inclination and the drum rpm, of a multigravity separator. The experiments were carried out at two levels of each variable. With the experimental data, regression equations were developed for different metal grades and recoveries. The analysis revealed that drum speed has a major influence in determining the heavy-metal grade and recovery. Drum inclination is the next most important variable, with the amount of wash water being the least important. A concentrate containing 40% lead, 9.4% zinc, 1.5% copper and 1,400ppm silver was obtained with recoveries of 74.8%, 65.9%, 64.1% and 53.2%, respectively. Finally, the predicted values of grades and recoveries at intermediate levels are compared to actual experimental data to test the validity of the equations developed.

The flotation performance of Florida phosphate rock was evaluated in terms of the mixing behavior of reagents and particulates during anionic conditioning of phosphate slurries. The various conditioning variables that influence mixing, namely, solids loading, agitation speed and conditioning time, were investigated to determine their effect on reagent coating of the particles. The phosphate recovery was used to monitor the conditioning efficiency. The mixing characteristics of the phosphate feed were evaluated in terms of the ratio of the mixing power (P) to the minimum power (Pm) required to keep the slurry in suspension. It was found that mixing conditions govern the conditioning time required to obtain a high recovery. Reagentization was slower at lower P/Pm ratios. At higher P/Pm ratios, the flotation recovery was optimized, and the agitation speed was found to have no significant effect. Optimum mixing conditions were obtained for a74 wt% slurry at an agitation speed of 450 rpm (47 radians/sec). Under these optimum mixing conditions, the collector dosage required for an improved recovery was lower and the conditioning time was shorter.

From 1996 to 2001, Wayne County and 13 suburban Detroit communities constructed the Downriver Regional Storage and Transport System (DRSTS) to improve area water quality, protect public health and alleviate basement flooding. The project consisted of a 10-mile long storage and transport tunnel, a pump station at the existing wastewater treatment plant, 9 miles of relief sewers (6 in tunnel and 3 in open cut). The work was separated into 10 contracts. Due to hydraulic design requirements and other constraints, the tunnel profile was located generally 65 feet below ground surface within a soft to medium clay strata which skimmed along the top of a very dense glacial till “hardpan” overlaying bedrock. Boulders within the tunnel bore were recognized as a significant, but indeterminate risk. This paper presents a case history of the owner’s contracting strategy for risk assumption and management of the boulder impacts on the project. Actual conditions encountered during construction and contractual adjustments made to address problems are reviewed, and recommendations for future contracts are included.

A mineral processing strategy developed for the finely and complexly interlayered calcite rich wollastonite, microcline, and iron-garnet ore of Jokkmokk, northern Sweden, gives an overall calcite recovery of 89.4% at a grade of 90.7% CaCO3. The wollastonite product assays 53.0% Ca- SiO3 at a recovery of 92.2%. The significant elements of the developed strategy are stepwise grinding, wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS), reverse flotation and starvation flotation. Stepwise grinding avoids the overgrinding of soft calcite. WHIMS removes the colored iron-garnet impurity and thereby increases the whiteness of the product. Reverse flotation enables a simple flotation circuit and starvation `flotation helps to optimize the physicochemical conditions in cleaner flotation by giving rougher products of narrow particle size distributions. Moreover, with the reagent scheme developed in this work only one cleaner stage is necessary for the various rougher flotation products to be upgraded to give the foregoing results. In this paper, the strategy is presented in detail along with appropriate results.
