Introduction Basis For System San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton. Until recently, BHP Billiton operated three surface mines in northwestern New Mexico: Navajo, San Juan, and La Plata. The San Juan and La Plata Mines supplied the San Juan Generating Station operated by Public Service of New Mexico. Stripping ratios at those operations were increasing, and by 2000 a feasibility study was underway to develop SJCC’s vast underground reserves as a replacement. Early in the evaluation and planning phase for the San Juan Underground Mine, it was determined that the target seams (Fruitland #8 and #9) had a high propensity for spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion was identified as a risk, both to personnel and equipment, and to the ability of SJCC to reliably fulfill its obligation to the power plant. In the last 20 years, several western US coal mines suffered underground spontaneous combustion events and/or mine fires. Included in this group were Colorado Westmoreland’s Orchard Valley Mine (1987), RAG’s Willow Creek Mine (1998 and 2000), Oxbow’s Sanborn Creek Mine (1999), the West Elk Mine of Arch Coal (2000), Arch’s Skyline Mine (2002), Western Fuels’ Deserado Mine (1996), and the West Ridge Mine of Andalex Resources (2003). The cause for the majority of these fires was spontaneous combustion. Fighting the fires required injection of an inert gas or foam. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide were the predominant choices of inert gas. In all cases, the gasses had to be trucked in from considerable distances. Before the inert gas could be used, injection holes had to be drilled into or near the suspected fire locations. This drilling and trucking caused costly delays in the timing of the fire fighting effort, and was not as precise as desirable. Emergency purchasing of gas and pumping services was extremely expensive, running as high as $70,000 per day at one mine. As a result of the experience of other western US coal operators, and the risk inherent with spontaneous combustion at SJCC, it was decided to pursue installation of a nitrogen delivery facility on-site at SJCC. This decision was later expanded to include a continuous supply of nitrogen.

It is particularly challenging for the mining industry to create and implement an efficient and adaptable mining innovation model to secure the continuous improvement of processes and products via technology. Human resource departments must play a vital role in shifting the mining culture, enabling these new classes of digitally skilled professionals to manage the mining operations of the future. This paper proposes the implementation of a concept based on the 5S mining innovation model ((a) Nieto, 2019), in a coal mining project in Central Asia, Mongolia. Practical and empirical evidence suggests that the model could serve as a roadmap to developing technologies and methods for the mines of the future.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is engaged in developing, extracting, processing and refining palladium, platinum and associated metals (PGM)from the J-M Reef. This geological formation is located in Stillwater, Sweet Grass and Park counties in southern Montana. Associated byproduct metals include rhodium, gold, silver, nickel and copper. SMC’s current mining operations are near Nye, MT. The company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine, the East Boulder project, about 21 km (13 miles) west of the Nye operations. A 5,650-m (18,550-ft) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore-bearing horizon (J-M Reef).

You and I can visit cement plants, inspect the various rotary kiln systems and find some equipment or some burning techniques that waste energy--fuel and power. After we have made such a visit and studied a few ideas, we could recommend ways to eliminate much of this waste. Probably every idea would cost money to bring into action. For our discussion, let us arbitrarily set an upper limit of $1,000,000 on the recommendations that we are allowed to make. Call these "low-cost" or "short-term" measures. They are improvements that do not require more than say, three months to complete; they do not require a major revision to the process. Other recommendations are "high-cost" or "long-term"; they are outside the scope of this discussion. Some of our "low-cost" recommendations would offer a satisfactory return on the money that they cost; the remainder would not. Now, is there some way that we can rather quickly pick out the "low-cost" measures that will show a satisfactory return and spend our time making these improvements first? Can we separate these items from those where the return is less likely to be good? I feel that we can pick some of these items quickly if we have a kiln system that has consistently non-uniform day-to-day operation. If the operation is uniform we probably cannot pick them quickly.

This paper addresses the impact on performance of column height (H), and column height to diameter (H/D) ratio by modelling the effect of HID on mixing and consequently on recovery and grade. Mineral recovery increases with increasing H/D ratio for a constant column volume and feed flowrate, while the concentrate grade decreases to a minor extent. Columns 10-15m in height with H/D-10 are well suited for feed rates 150-600 L/min. Maximum H/D is determined by the gas carrying capacity, an important consideration for pilot units where H/D?200.

Traditional cycle theory would postulate that if you have a supply shortage relative to demand, the price will increase because buyers will incrementally increase the price they are willing to pay to ensure that their needs are fulfilled. As prices rise, more supply will be brought on and will eventually exceed demand. This supply excess will cause the price to decline as producers have to lower their prices to sell their goods. What is interesting is that cycles are simply volatility over time. Without the time factor, volatility simply goes up and down. When we add the time element, a cycle is created. This cycle can be big or small. In mining?s case, we are talking about a Super Cycle ? a big cycle. But a Su-per Cycle can be formed in two ways. It can form by either increasing the wavelength or the volatility. If these two elements are combined, a Super Cycle is formed. It is bigger than the normal cycle in terms of time duration and extent of volatility. A recent study (Fig. 1) conducted by Cuddington and Jarrett showed an interesting proof of Super Cycles and suggests that these cycles last between 15 and 30 years. So, what causes a Su-per Cycle? Is it a convergence of unrelated events or a consequence of related events? In a global community everything is related. Equilibrium theory would also take the position that a Super Cycle is a consequence of events.

Libby, Montana is the site of a large vermiculite deposit that was mined between 1920 and 1990 to extract vermiculite for commercial applications such as insulation, gardening products, and construction materials. The Libby vermiculite deposit also contains amphibole minerals including tremolite, actinolite, richterite, and winchite. Historically, Libby mine workers experienced high exposures to amphibole structures, and, as a group, have experienced the health consequences of those occupational exposures. It has been suggested that Libby residents also have been and continue to be exposed to amphibole structures released during the vermiculite mining operations and therefore are at increased risk for disease. The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted two epidemiological-type studies of residents living in Libby and the surrounding areas to assess these risks. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) collected and analyzed exposure data in Libby and used those data to project risks of asbestos-associated disease for Libby residents. The EPA has placed the Libby Asbestos Site, which includes the mine and the town of Libby, on its National Priority List of hazardous waste sites in need of clean up. This article presents a review of the exposure studies conducted in Libby and an analysis of health risks based on the data collected in those studies. Libby mine workers have experienced elevated levels of asbestos-associated disease as a consequence of their occupational exposures to amphibole structures. Libby residents? exposures typically are substantially lower than mine workers? historical exposures, and the health risk projections for residents are, accordingly, substantially lower. © 2007 Published by Elsevier Inc. The recent seismic events have shown that earthquakes have an immense destructive power. Chile was hit in February 2010 with a seismic intensity of 8.8 on the Richter scale, and had loss of about 700 killed persons, while Haiti was hit in January 2010 with 7.0 killing about 220?000 people. The event in Haiti showed that the seismic events can lead to a disaster if no preventive measures are taken. On the other side, the seismic event in Chile has hit a well-prepared country with moderate consequences. The earthquake with 6.6 Richter in Japan in March 2011, have further shown how severe the consequences can be if critical equipment is involved. Fortunately, the equipment in a mine has not the potential hazard as a nuclear power plant. Anyway, we are diligent and it is obvious that the seismic risk may lead to a real disaster even if the probability is small. The GMD is an important component in the grinding circuit of a mine. This paper maps out earthquake-prone areas including expected earthquake magnitude calculated according to relevant standards, focusing mainly on the building code IBC 2009. An overview is provided on how this standard is applied to mining equipment to minimize damage and aid large mills in operation to successfully withstand seismic effects. The differences in stresses and forces on the GMD and foundation are shown based on a turning and stopped mill simulation during an earthquake. The results demonstrate the need to maintain active and operating earthquake detection systems. Aside from detecting an earthquake?s magnitude, the sensor information can also be used to reduce the harmful effects that an earthquake has on mining equipment. As follows the earthquake requirements are defined. The last part of this paper explains how to fullfill these requirements.

Attending the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting and exhibit has become an annual tradition for many in the mining industry. Similar to last year’s synopsis, this report is an overview of the 2003 conference from the eyes of a consulting mineralogist. It is supplemented by conversations with other participants. And it examines the conference handouts. Certain segments of the mining industry have seen improvement throughout the year in terms of metal prices, stronger demand and renewed interest by the investment community. Other segments continue their decline due to depressed commodity prices, higher oil prices, a continued weakness in the global economy and war uncertainties. SARS was known to the world, but it was not a Toronto epidemic during PDAC. In short, this year’s PDAC was permeated by an air of anxiety about the Middle East.

Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. The roof bolts tested are also used to identify the possible corrosion mechanisms that influenced the bolts’ performance over time. Initially, the most commonly used bolt material in the USA, the ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, was tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal mining environment for approximately 6 months, and the results are discussed. Localized corrosion forms such as crevice and pitting were mainly observed after testing. The stressed and unstressed roof bolts with and without threads that were tested in alkaline coal mine corrosive environment for 6 months passed their load-bearing capacity as per ASTM F432 test standards. From the results, it is concluded that this test protocol could be applicable to test the material performance of different roof bolt metallurgies and coatings with desired modifications to the proposed methodology for the specific underground mine environment. This paper mainly discusses the test system and protocol and shortcomings of the system and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located in northern Sweden, produces about 24 Mton of iron ore yearly using sublevel caving. For efficiency, the mine must deliver planned quantities of three ore products. We use mixed integer programming to schedule Kiruna’s operations, specifically, which production blocks should be mined, and when they should be mined to minimize deviations from planned production quantities while adhering to mining restrictions (e.g., sequencing). A new production block database and a well-formulated mixed integer programming model dramatically reduce the size of the original problem; in less than ten minutes we generate five-year schedules with time fidelity of months.

Using powerful database management software, nested-field analysis and microanalysis of narratives have been made of West Virginia accident data, resulting in a new approach for targeting and prioritizing safety interventions by county, mine size, specific mine, job title, type injury, etc. and combinations of these parameters. The analyses have been useful in focusing training and discussion sessions on specific work problems, trends, conditions, and situations for targeted groups of miners. Application of the technique will be presented in this paper, along with comparisons of various mine performance measures.

P. Mousset-Jones I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent comparative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging. The dream of constructing the new Second Avenue Subway in New York has finally become reality as the first construction contract package is currently underway. This first contract requires the construction a TBM Launch Box in the middle of Second Avenue from which a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) will bore two tunnels south to 63rd Street. This paper will discuss the design of this contract and how construction has progressed including preparation, site constraints, utility construction and com-munity impacts while highlighting the challenges of working in an urban environment. It will also discuss moving forward on this major project outlining the remaining contract packages including their scope and status.

The more than 40,000 mining industry professionals that are expected to attend the National Mining Association’s(NMA) MINExpo International2000 trade show and conference will be treated to the exhibition’s largest display ever. The exhibit is expected to cover more than 60,385 m2(650,000 sq ft) and feature more than 1,300 exhibitors. The event is set for Oct. 9-12, 2000 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. Richard L. Lawson, NMA’s president and chief executive officer, said, “MINExpo 2000 will showcase everything that mining is proudest of. This is the largest premier mining exposition in the world.” MINExpo is held every four years.

INTRODUCTION The headrace tunnel in Amlach is part of a hydro electric power scheme near the city of Lienz in south west Austria. The project is owned and developed by Tiroler Wasserkraftwerke AG, the regional electrical supply utility. The construction work was divided into seven contracts for the entire scheme. The power output will be 60 MW, this being developed from a head of 370 m and water flows of 20 m3/s. The water will be tapped from the river Drau and lead through a 22 km long headrace on the south side of the Puster valley through the Lienzer Dolomiten mountain range. Contract No. 4, which is a joint venture between Mayreder, Züblin, Strabag, Rella and Innerebner, involves the construction of 13.5 km of the headrace. It was decided to bore this from one single adit, which probably makes it the longest pressure tunnel driven from one side by a TBM. (See Fig. 1.) For the tunnelling an Atlas Copco Jarva MK 12 TBM was chosen. The excavation diameter is 3.90 m, with the final lined diameter being in the range of 3.20 to 3.40 m. The back-up is a 145 m long single track rail system supplied by Mühlhäuser (Germany). Side-tipping cars with a capacity each of 8.2 m were used for removing the muck. Signal processing is a major challenge for In-Seam Seismic (ISS) technique. Fourier Transform is an important tool for signal processing such as frequency analysis. However, for ISS signal, localized information, especially time-frequency localization is even more important. Wavelet Transform (WT) provides another approach to study the signal as a function of frequency and time. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the application and advantages of WT to seismic signal analysis. Both transmission and reflection signals from coal mine void detection experiments are analyzed. The results illustrate that WT appears to be a powerful and convenient method for the in-seam seismic signal processing.

Paper 1: Risk of gastrointestinal cancers from inhalation and ingestion of asbestos, John F. Gamble Selikoff suggested the hypothesis that asbestos exposure is causally associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in an early study of insulation workers. In this paper, John Gamble reports on his extensive review and reanalysis studies that address the relationship between asbestos exposure and GI cancers. The purpose of the review was to evaluate the association between asbestos exposure and risks of stomach, colorectal, colon, and rectal cancers separately. Gamble evaluated exposure?response (E?R) relationships using surrogate exposure methods ??because few individual studies of GI cancer have reported exposure? response analyses.?? The principal asbestos exposure surrogates are: (1) the rate ratio (RR) for lung cancer; and (2) the percent of mesothelioma among exposed workers. Analyzing SMRs for GI cancers from individual studies versus the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma provides crude estimates of E?Rs for asbestos exposure and GI cancer. This paper will review world trends that are increasingly restrictive of mineral exploration and mining throughout the Free World This is occurring in the face of projected huge increases in demand for mineral products Some of the impediments are direct and absolute; others are indirect, but nevertheless effective; still others represent merely hostile attitudes Many of the world governments have a reputation for lack of integrity in dealing with existing foreign investments within their borders, and consequently are quite uninviting places for new investments, especially in the capital intensive natural resources industry. Compared with even 35 odd years ago (and pre-World War II is not that long ago) there are few places left where private mining investments are both wanted and where investors are willing, to go. We shall begin with an analysis of conditions in the U. S., shift to neighboring Canada and Flexico, and then have a look around the world. As the world grows smaller for the private mining sector, the function of exploration, development, and operation is passing over to government. We'll conclude with a view of what this holds for the future
