American Aggregates Corporation is one of the leading producers of mineral aggregates in the nation. Production is from deposits of glacial sand and gravel and limestone and dolomite bedrock. Annual production from 33 plants is 25,000,000 tons. Land consumption is at the rate of 300 to 400 acres annually. This annual rate of consumption presents a continuing challenge to the exploration and mining personnel to meet the requirements of reserve replacement, mining and land rehabilitation.

"Highwall miners continue to be implemented by operations to increase recovery, improve margins, and justify higher stripping ratios as high quality surface reserves become increasingly rare. Many times, operations facilitate projected underground operations by leaving an intact highwall for development purposes. These facts result in larger highwalls that are left standing for increased periods of time prior to reclamation. As a consequence, worker exposure and risk is also elevated, resulting in higher potential for accidents or fatalities relating to surface highwalls. Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent on both geologic and mining factors. Dynamic numerical modeling offers the capability to assess possible stability issues related to blasting-induced ground vibrations. Research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of highwall stability due to ground vibrations from blasting events. Additionally, the relationship of amplitude and frequency, and their impact on highwall stability is investigated. The results of this modeling indicate that amplitude has little impact on stability. However, frequency has a significant impact on highwall stability. INTRODUCTION The number of mining fatalities has declined since 2010, and 2016 is currently on pace to continue this trend (MSHA 2016). This decline can be directly correlated to the decline in surface mining activity and the overall decline of the coal industry. However, since 2002 the percentage of surface coal mine fatalities associated with highwall activities remains relatively high, constituting approximately 15% of all surface mine fatalities. 2014 was the first year with a highwall failure fatality since 2011. Most recent surface coal mining fatalities are associated with machinery and haulage. Table 1 provides a summary of the total surface coal mining fatalities, and the number of highwall failure fatalities dating back to 2010.Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent upon geology and geologic discontinuities within the rock mass, along with highwall geometry, standing time, and applied stresses. Another possible concern that has not been previously investigated is the effect of blasting-induced stresses on highwall stability and the stability of web/barrier pillar systems as a result of ground vibrations from blasting events. Many modern surface coal mines employ numerous extraction fronts that rely on blasting for primary rock breakage. This results in highwall and highwall pillar systems experiencing blasting-induced stresses of many different types and magnitudes."

INTRODUCTION Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. is an Evansville, Indiana based heavy construction contractor engaged in projects for both the public and private sectors of the underground construction industry. Construction activities range from conventional shaft, slope, tunnel and chamber excavation through state-of-the-art mechanical excavation, ground freezing, standard support and structural concrete operations. Conventional excavation and concreting equipment, as well as raise boring machines, road headers, tunnel boring machines, and freeze plants are owned, operated, maintained and modified "in-house" to suit the needs of individual projects. The balance of this paper wilt present a general overview of the Frontier-Kemper planning and construction operations on the recently completed Phase II of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, John Day Dam, Juvenile Fish Bypass Project. General Project History The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for designing, constructing and maintaining various navigation and impoundment structures on the nation's inland waterways. Maintenance involves both the work required to maintain the structure in fully-operable condition and the ongoing work required to maintain a positive impact on the environment. John Day Dam is located on the Columbia River approximately 95 km (60 miles) upstream of The Dalles, Oregon. It was constructed to: provide electric power to the Pacific Northwest; provide Locking for up-and-downstream bound commercial and private watercraft; act as a water impoundment structure to control flooding conditions; and to provide a source of irrigation water

This paper describes a process which finds the maximum worth of a mineral deposit. The procedure requires two phases. The first uses a microcomputer evaluation model to find the optimum design input, with minimum attention giving to actual mining constraints that might exist. The second phase runs the first-phase design parameters through a direct simulation model on a mainframe computer. In phase one, financial, economic, and geotechnical data are entered; and an idealized list of design parameters is output. The list includes optimum values for cutoff grade, mine life, mine size, paytons, paygrade, and payvalue. In addition, the model generates pro forma operating and cash flow statements and it indicates the maximum net present value (NPV) possible for the deposit along with the probability of that oc¬curring. The initial results imply perfect mining conditions. In phase two, when actual mining selectivity, sequence, and other practical design considerations are related in a direct simulation model to the optimum criteria found above, the maximum NPV invariably decreases. However, if it is still satisfactory (NPV greater than or equal to zero) then the maximum worth/ optimum design have probably been found in the first iteration. If, on the other hand, NPV is now unsatisfactory, then design compromises must be made and simulated, and the results rerun through the evaluation model. If several iterations fail to yield a positive NPV then the deposit is most likely unfeasible t for the forecast economic conditions used in phase one.

Deposition of calcium carbonate scale on activated carbon in the Pinson Mining mill carbon column circuit was causing erratic gold recovery rate, long acid wash time, high carbon attrition and long strip times. Continuous addition of a blended antiscalant into the mill thickener overflow at 8 ppm reduced the average carbon acid wash weight loss from approximately 10% to < 2%. Cleaner carbon improved the gold loading rate in the mill column. The loading on Column I was increased to 175-225 oz/ton carbon from 125-150 oz/ton for a two-day carbon advance cycle. The higher loading capability has given Pinson more flexibility and better control of gold flow through their carbon adsorption, stripping and electrowin­ning processes. Preventing calcium carbonate build-up on activated carbon with this antiscalant reduced acid wash batch time. This enabled Pinson to acid wash and regenerate every batch of stripped carbon for all the adsorption circuits. Shorter strip times have also resulted from the lowering of the calcium carbonate scale level in the loaded carbon. Carbon consumption has been reduced and is now averaging 0.046 lb/ton ore for the first six months of 1990 compared to 0.072 and 0.083 lb/ton respectively in 1989 and 1988.

Facing an orchestrated assault from the anti-mining lobby and its congressional allies, the Mining Law of 1872 may soon be either dramatically changed or even repealed. In 1989, Sen. Dale Bumpers (D-AK) introduced Senate Bill 1126 entitled the "Mining Law of 1989." It has been through several hearings and is still in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, where Sen. Bumpers is the number two ranking Democrat. In the House, Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) introduced the "Mineral Development and Exploration Act of 1990," HR 3866. This bill is in the House Committee on Interior and Insu¬lar Affairs. (The numbers on these bills, and perhaps some of their language, will be changed when they are reintroduced in early 1991. However, their substance is expected to remain substantially unchanged. Bill numbers here refer to legislation as it was numbered in the 1990 Congress.) In the eyes of its supporters, Bumpers&apos; S 1126 appears to be more complete and has the inside track over the Rahall bill. Bumpers&apos; bill includes provisions for royalties, bonding and reclamation. The Rahall bill is criticized by opponents of the Mining Law for its failure to include a royalty provision and for not having specific bonding and reclamation provisions.

Development of process control in the metallurgical industry over the past ten years has been highly influenced by technical advances centered on use of computers as well as on measurement and associated equipment. The discussion in this section reviews advances in computer technology, measurement devices, data input-output techniques, and their use in mineral processing for the objective of guiding application of process control principles. Advances in the next ten-year period through the 1980&apos;s can be foreseen in the cost and application of data handling facilities in the coincident fields of data processing equipment, interface and control devices, and computer programming systems. These will lead to greater acceptance in a widely expanding range of mineral processing fields. It can be predicted that process control methods now known to be effective will become more re- fined. Costs of on-stream analyzers for assays and particle data will be reduced. Continued innovation can be anticipated in measurement devices required for effecting control. Control techniques developed over the last decade in key process operations such as crushing, grinding, flotation, smelting, and hydrometallurgical processes are described in the following chapters. The general forms taken by computer process control are first outlined briefly.

Cut-off grade is one of the most critical parameters affecting project cash flow. Its sensitivity is due to the number of other parameters that are correlated with any change in its value. Changes in cut-off grade, average grade and ore tonnage vary and they in turn can affect such parameters as capital and replacement costs, recovery, life of the project and operating costs. Perhaps one of the best definitions of cut-off grade is that of Taylor (1), "... any grade that, for any specific reason, is used to separate two courses of action, e.g. to mine or to leave, to mill or to dump ... . Obviously the most likely specific reason is one governed by economics, involving the return of investment and sufficient profit to motivate development and mining of the deposit. In this paper the cut-off grade is defined as that mining limit which will maximise the economic return for a projected mining venture. The following brief literature survey indicates that when computing the optimum cut-off grade there is a need to be able to directly compute the Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFRR) or Net Present Value (NPV), as economically as possible, while allowing for parameter dependencies and variation in project structure.

A systematic approach has been developed to analyze a phosphate grinding circuit with a view toward determining promising alternatives for increasing mill capacity. This analysis was carried out and capacity increases were predicted in the context of detailed population balance models developed for the plant ball mills and classifier systems. Model development and verification was performed using data obtained in a series of batch tests and two plant test campaigns. The effects of feed rate, percent solids, ball size, and mill material filling, etc., on grinding were investigated in the laboratory and plant. Residence time distribution tests were also performed to determine the transport behavior in the mill. The population balance models were found to provide accurate predictions of full-scale grinding circuit performance. Based on the findings of this study, additional capacity in excess of 25% was predicted for these ball milling circuits by a proper combination of ball size change, mill dilution, and adopting screen classification in place of hydro-cyclones. These predictions have been confirmed by plant tests in which the recommended operating changes have been implemented. Understanding the effects of operating variables on breakage kinetics and the interplay between kinetics, transport, and classification has contributed significantly to increasing the mill capacity.

INTRODUCTION For the past 25 years, tunnel support requirements have frequently been determined, at least in North American practice, by classifying the rock according to the system proposed by Terzaghi (1), using one or more of the 8 Rock Conditions which he defined, the rock load then being selected within the range given for each Condition. However, there is a lack of published data comparing Terzaghi loads with actual measured rock loads, and it would appear that the degree of conservatism, or otherwise, of the Terzaghi approach is very often unknown. Excavation of 4 large diameter tunnels at the Tarbela Dam Project in Pakistan afforded an opportunity to compare Terzaghi and measured loads, through instrumentation of the steel ribs installed for temporary support, and by classification of the geology exposed during the tunnelling operations. In addition, the deformation of the rock surrounding the tunnels was monitored during excavation by means of borehole extensometers installed prior to the start of tunnelling. This paper describes the tunnel instrumentation and the results obtained therefrom, and relates these results to the Terzaghi load coefficients. One of the major current efforts by the Florida phosphate industry to reduce deep aquifer water consumption is to use 100% recycle water for flotation. This measure alone could save billions of gallons of deep well water annually. However, this also results in higher suspended solids (slimes) in flotation water, causing poor process performance particularly for amine flotation. Polymers could play a major role in allowing the industry to use high-turbidity recycle water for amine flotation without compromising its impact on the Florida economy. The enhancement of rougher flotation by polymers may also have potential. Most importantly, dramatic efficiency improvement may be realized by floating silica first. Adding polymer to flotation feed and/or water is perhaps the most economically viable way of reversing the Crago "double float" process, in order to reduce operating costs and increase phosphate recovery. This paper presents both laboratory and pilot flotation data showing the effect of different polymers on collector dosage and flotation recovery. There appeared to be an optimal range of polymer concentration beyond which the benefits do not offset the drop in phosphate recovery. The effect of poly mer is slime-level dependent. Pilot testing data show that the "Reverse Crago" process (floating silica first followed by phosphate flotation) can outperform the Crago process.

Several nonionic surfactants and one anionic surfactant were tested to enhance the flotation response of a low-rank coal. The nonionic surfactants included an ethoxylated octylphenol and several polypropylene-polyethylene block copolymers, and the anionic surfactant was a dioctyl sulfosuccinate. All of the surfactants improved the yield significantly, but the influence on grade was complex. To elucidate the mechanisms involved, separate studies were conducted to determine the emulsification behavior of the surfactants. For the nonionic water soluble reagents, a correlation between the emulsifying power of the surfactant and the flotation response was observed. An increase in the number of droplets produced was considered to he the main reason for increases in the yield. However, a small amount of surfactant adsorption on coal is essential to promote adhesion of oil droplets. When the surfactant was introduced into the flotation pulp prior to addition of dodecane, the benefits of the surfactant decreased significantly. The decrease was attributed to both a decrease in hydrophobicity of coal through increased surfactant adsorption and a decrease in the surfactant available for emulsification. When a surfactant dispersed in oil was used, the transfer of surfactant to the aqueous phase was minimal, and a considerable increase in yield was observed.

A suite of ore and waste rock materials was selected for the interlaboratory testing of combustion-infrared ("Leco") methods used to estimate carbonate and sulfide minerals present in test materials. The objective of the study is to develop ASTM standard methods to be used for metallurgical characterization of ore, acid drainage prediction for ore and waste during ore body evaluation, and for ore and waste control during the active mining of ore deposits. The results may be interpreted for classification of the materials according to their carbonate-sulfide or acid-base characteristics based on net carbonate value (NCV). The test materials were processed by x-ray diffraction and x-ray fluorescence (XRD-XRF) at Newmont Metallurgical Services (NMS) to obtain a semiquantitative mineralogical composition. Results of the interlaboratory testing for total carbon-sulfur, pyrolysis loss carbon-sulfur and hydrochloric acid residual carbon¬sulfur are compared with the mineralogical composition to aid in interpretation of the NCV classifications of the samples.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the sensitivity of three selected input parameters in the operational control of continuous bottom fed thickeners used for the treatment of coal refuse slurries. The three variable parameters were "Feed Flow Rate," "Feed pH," and "Feed Solids Concentration." These three input parameters were studied under three cationic-anionic polymeric conditions. For each polymeric condition, two mathematical models were developed, one for overflow response and the other for underflow response. The combination polymers produced the best quality of overflow and underflow. For this polymeric condition, change in the feed solids concentration was the most sensitive factor in the maintenance of the overflow quality, and the feed pH was the most sensitive factor for the maintenance of underflow quality. The mathematical models generated a set of plots that would allow an operator to control and/or adjust any of the three variables to achieve optimum conditions.

3.1 INTRODUCTION The final subsidence basin discussed so far is that developed long after mining has stopped. In a supercritical final subsidence basin, the central portion subsides uniformly. Thus any structures located there are not subjected to any final permanent surface deformation. But this statement is only true for the final subsidence basin. When the face is moving, the structures are subjected to dynamic deformations associated with the dynamic subsidence basin. For instance the house in front of a moving face (location 1 in Fig. 3.1) is subjected to the maximum tensile strain and the maximum positive curvahue. When it falls behind the face in location 2, it is subjected to the maximum compressive strain and the maximum negative curvature. When the house is far behind the face in location 3, it returns to its original condition with only uniform subsidence. However, the magnitude of the dynamic deformations may be sufficiently large to damage a structure in locations 1 and 2 before it reaches location 3. Therefore it is very important to study the characteristics of the dynamic subsidence basin. Under normal conditions, when the face has advanced for a distance approximately one-sixth to one-third of the seam depth from the setup entry, depending on the seam depth and the physical properties of the overburden strata, the movement of the over- burden strata reaches the surface, whereupon the surface also be- gins to deform. Thereafter, the surface point where the movement initiates is always located at a fixed distance ahead of the face. The angle between the vertical line at the faceline and the line connecting the movement initiation point on the surface and the face- line is the angle of advance influence, w. The angle of advance influence can be used to determine the distance, [ 1], which is the influence zone ahead of the face. w is approximately 20O to 35 O for the northern Appalachian coalfield (Peng and Geng, 1984). The movement of each surface point is a relatively complicated process both in time and in space, because the relative position between the faceline and each surface point varies continuously, so that the direction and rate of movement for each surface point differ. In the following sections, the movements of each surface point on the major cross section are illustrated. 3.2 DYNAMIC SURFACE MOVEMENTS Dynamic surface movements include dynamic subsidence and displacement. The movement of each point on the subsidence basin is different as the face advances from 1 to 6 (Fig. 3.2). Surface points A and B, being far in front of the moving face, subside and displace toward the face (i.e., from A to A&apos; and from B to B&apos;). Point C, which is quite near but in front of the moving face, subsides continuously but displaces initially toward the face and then turns to pure subsidence ending up at C&apos;. Point D, which is behind the face above the gob, subsides continuously, but displaces initially toward the face when it is in front of the face and reverses to follow the moving face when it is behind the face, with the amount of displacement toward the face being larger than that following the face. As a result the net displacement is toward the center of the gob (i.e., from point D to D&apos;). The same statement is true for point E. For point F, the net displacement is zero, i.e it appears to have dropped down vertically to F&apos;. For points G to I, the net displacements are in the direction of face advance except the magnitudes are increasing in sequential order. Point 1, has reached the final dynamic position of 1&apos;. In other words, the face has passed sufficiently away such that it does not affect the movement at point I. All other points (A to H) are still within the face influenced area. 3.3 DEVELOPMENT OF DYNAMIC SUBSIDENCE PROFILES When the face has moved for a distance of h/6-h/3 from the setup entry, surface subsidence reaches the surface. At this time the surface subsidence basin is very mild (S, in Fig. 3.3), and it is symmetrical about the center. As the face continues to advance, the maximum subsidence continues to increase, and its location moves with, but falls farther behind the face. When the face has advanced a sufficient distance, e.g., (0.9-2.2)h, away from the setup entry, the maximum subsidence reaches the maximum possible value (curve S,). At this time, the dynamic subsidence profile is fully developed. Thereafter both sides of the dynamic subsidence profile become stabilized. The subsidence profile on the face side moves with the advancing face in an orderly manner (curves S, and S,). When the face stops, the face side of the profile continues to subside and becomes stabilized (curves;) sometime after. Curve S; is the final subsidence profile (see Fig. 2.22). 3.4 DEVELOPMENT OF DYNAMIC DISPLACEMENT AND SLOPE PROFILES The dynamic displacement profile moves with the advancing face (Fig. 3.4), but changes according to some specific rules. When the face has advanced to A, the surface begins to move and its dynamic displacement profile has two maximum values (curve Ua): one positive near the setup entry moving toward the face advancing direction and the other negative on the face side also moving toward the face advancing direction. As the face continues to advance, the positive maximum displacement on the setup entry side increases and moves toward the face continuously. The same statement is true for the negative maximum displacement on the face side. When the opening increases to the critical size, both the maximum positive and negative displacements reach the peak values and remain constant thereafter. Notice that when the opening becomes critical in size, the point of zero displacement no longer moves with the advancing face. Rather it spreads into an area of zero displacement (curve Ue) and expands as the face advances. When the face stops, the displacement on the face side continues until it becomes stabilized (curve Úe). Curve Úe is the final displacement profile. The ratio of maximum dynamic to final displacement ranges from 60 to 75%. The dynamic slope profile follows the same patterns of change. The ratio of maximum dynamic to maximum final slope ranges from 50 to 80%. The maximum slope decreases with in- creasing rate of face advance (Peng and Geng, 1984). It must be pointed out that except for those near both sides of the profiles, each point on the displacement and slope profiles is subjected to a cycle of positive and negative displacements and slopes depending on its relative position with respect to the face.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. Weight may be defined as the gravitational attraction or earthpull on a body (mass). Thus, from a practical viewpoint, a scale or other form of weighing device is a mans for determining mss. Weighing devices fall into two principal categories: (1) gravimetric; and (2) non-gravimetric or nuclear devices. At present, after many centuries of use, the effect of gravitational force as a meas¬ure of mass in industry and commerce remains by far the most common method for mass (weight) determination. Non-gravimetric methods are just becoming established in the industry. The general trend is toward weighing materials on the Trove. The predominant advantage of continous weighing over batch weighing operations is its ability to handle large tonnages without interrupting the material flow. The accuracy and reliability ability of continuous weighing equipment have improved greatly over the past decade. However, static weighing equipment still outsells continuous weighing equipment, because it is considered more accurate. Batch weighing can also produce a continuous weighed delivery through automation where the process requires it. In caparison with continuous weighing devices, such as belt scales, the batch-type scales have same inherent advantages affecting their accuracy. For example, weighing 300 lbs. per minute on a belt scale may mean that only 3 lbs. will be on the scale mechanism at one time. In order to obtain a scale accuracy of 1/2%, the sensitivity must be at least 1/2% of 3 lbs. or 1/4 oz. On the other hand, a batch scale may discharge a 300 lbs. load every 60 seconds through a timing mechanism. An accuracy of 1/2% can be easily obtained with a sensitivity of 1/2% of 300 lbs. or 24-oz.

Part 2 of this article continues the discussion of a 10-year, multimillion dollar research and plant testing program on slurry rheology and grinding circuits. The first part of the article (ME, Dec. 1982) presented the basic concepts identified by the research and some laboratory test results. This section Illustrates typical Industrial scale test results and Identifies some industrial operating implications of controlling rheology by different methods. At least four controllable factors decide the rheological character of a slurry-slurry density or percent solids, particle size distribution, chemical environment, and slurry temperature. The second factor has two interrelated facets: the shape of the particle size distribution which controls packing behavior of the solids, and the fineness of the distribution. Finer particles increase interparticle forces and viscosity. As indicated in Part 1, during a given grinding test it is possible for all four factors to change. However, regardless of the particular settings of the four factors in a given test, if the resulting rheological character is either dilatant, pseudoplastic, or pseudoplastic with yield, the associated breakage rate is correlated with the current rheological character. It is obvious, for example, in batch grinding tests run at constant percent solids, that the second and third factors, where appropriate, are changing during grinding because size distributions are changing and the production of fresh surface area takes up unadsorbed chemical. Thus the corresponding rheological character change in batch tests with increasing grind time would be dilatant to pseudoplastic to pseudoplastic with yield. The degree to which this transformation occurs depends on the changing setting of the four factors over grinding time. In continuous grinding tests, one might logically expect that dramatic changes in any one of the four factors will be less likely to occur. It will be shown that continuous mill operations offer some unique opportunities to take advantage of possible rheological transformation by more direct operational control of the settings for the four factors. One extra observation noted in the rheological studies was the variability in the location and extent of region B (pseudoplastic behavior) for the various coals and ores tested. The location of region B was usually in the region of 45-55% solids by volume and was of the extent of 0-8%, or 2-11% with chemical addition. The corresponding increase in net production ranged from 0-10% in region B and 0-21% in region B&apos;. When region B is small or zero (no pseudoplastic character is exhibited) no increase in production will be observed and the use of chemicals is often marginal. There are several reasons for some materials exhibiting this quick transformation from dilatancy to high yield values often at surprisingly low percent solids by volume such as 30%. One condition identified was for materials containing high levels of viscosity-producing elements such as- carbonates or clays. A second condition documented was for materials that exhibited unusually fine primary fragment distributions (fine B1,; curves). This corresponds to materials having small y values of < 0.5. Such a slurry developed a yield value quickly during grinding because of the rapid buildup of fines. A related problem can be presented by materials exhibiting excessively coarse primary fragment distributions, y values > 0.9. Breakage of this type of material produces size distributions that give poor packing efficiencies even at long grind times, thus hindering the normal rheological transformation presented earlier. A final condition that can cause the occurrance of region B to be small or zero is when the media void volume filling of slurry is < 100%. Figures 5a and 5b use previously published data of this study to demonstrate the influence of solids loading and weight percent solids on the net production of taconite ore in a laboratory batch ball mill. In particular, Fig. 5a illustrates several trends not generally recognized until this study. They include these two: • Increased slurry density allows for increased solids loading before passing through the maximum in the net production curve where the fall-off is due to non first order breakage. • The use of rheology control chemicals such as GA-4272 allows this trend to be extended to higher slurry loadings with an increase in net production over any previous condition by keeping grinding first order. Figure 5b shows the same data as Fig. 5a plotted for constant weight loadings. These various figures of net production versus percent solids show the location and extent of the regions A, B, and C presented in Part 1 as a function of solids loading. It is obvious that the rheological transformation pattern described earlier does not hold true for slurry loadings corresponding to less than the void volume of the media, which is also a region of

Thiourea is recognized as a technically competitive alternative to cyanide for gold and silver extraction for a variety of ores and concentrates. This paper describes the results of a recent mini-pilot locked cycle test comparing cyanidation with acidothioureation treatment of gold bearing sulphide concentrate. The gold extractability of both methods was similar. The comparative metallurgical operating conditions and test results are summarized. Detailed byproduct solution analyses and environmental toxicity test results are presented and suggest that thioureation might result in acutely toxic byproducts even after treatment. Comparative process economics are summarized based on preliminary commercial operating flowsheets derived for the locked cycle case study. Capital and operating cost estimates are shown. The results indicate that cyanidation is more economically favorable within the constraints of the case study. Considerations for process selection between thioureation and cyanidation, for conceptual case studies, are discussed.

The first section of this text delves into construction engineering techniques for successfully completing necessary underground production support projects. I will discuss alternative design concepts, installation practices, materials and material costs, completion time, and necessary labor for individual projects. The emphasis of this section is on describing each project thoroughly and providing a practical guide for the supervisor or engineer. There are four main construction categories for typical underground mining projects. These are: 1) Transportation of men and supply materials. This refers to track and wire installation and roadbed grading and ballasting. 2) Ventilation, composed of overcasts, man doors, regulators, and stoppings. 3) Drainage, including sumps, pumping stations, drainage networks, pumps, and face drainage. 4) Haulage of coal and rock from the face to the outside. The focus here is in the installation of belt lines, belt drives, transfer points, and vibrating bins/feeders. The first section shall fully discuss these four categories in regard to the construction engineer or supervisor designing, building, or improving a system. In addition, special projects such as surge bins, rotary dumps, and underground offices not classified under these categories will be discussed. For manageable purposes, I have limited the installation discussions to one or two approaches I feel have merit. The variation of installations in coal mining is endless, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, the reader should not dismiss or restrict his thinking to only the approaches in the text. It serves as a guide only.
