In extracting base metals from orebodies, sulphide as well as oxide, the main environmental concern is sulphur, whether in the form of sulphurous gases or sulphate in liquid form. Generally sulphur is in over supply in developed countries mainly because of strict legislation to capture it. In developing countries, on the other hand there is usually a shortage of sulphur because of less strict environ-mental legislation. Africa falls in this second category and the African continent imports substantial amounts of sulphur, despite the fact that large quantities of sulphur are emitted by smelters, thermal power stations, coalmines, fertilizer manufacturers and others. Other than making acid from gaseous emissions, existing methods to capture sulphur from gaseous and liquid effluents are uneconomical and it ends up in the environment either as ammonium sulphate (from gaseous effluents) or as gypsum (from liquid effluents). The CSIR?s Environmentek and Key Structure Holdings have developed a process whereby gaseous sulphur emissions and sulphates in liquid effluents can be economically captured and converted into elemental sulphur and metal carbonates. The elemental sulphur is of high purity as it is precipitated from a gas stream and is readily marketable. The metal carbonates (barium or calcium) can be recycled back to the process or marketed. The only harmful by-product of the process is carbon dioxide. Should natural gas or methane be available, the carbon dioxide could be reduced by about one third. Should solar, wind or hydro energy be available to generate hydrogen, the carbon dioxide emissions would be zero. Employing this technology could make Africa independent of sulphur imports and furthermore reduce the impact of acid rain and seepage of sulphate from gypsum and other waste dumps into the environment.

CaF2is often used as a fluoride addition to the chloride salt flux in the melting of aluminium scrap. The solubility of CaF2in the chloride salt system is limited. Dissolved CaF2is considered to improve the properties of salt fluxes. Experimental investigations indicated that the solubility ofCaF2in 70 wt % NaCl/30 wt % KCl, German salt flux used in aluminium scrap melting, might be lower than expected according to literature data. The pseudo binary section CaF2-(70 wt % NaCl-30 wt % KCl) was investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA). The determined solubility of CaF2appeared to be considerably lower than presented in the literature. The pseudo binary section calculated using thermodynamic data partially confirmed the results. DTA allowed us alsoto determine the crystallization temperature interval of the two phase eutectic consisting of the solid solution NaCl-KCl and CaF2. This paper pays tribute to the pioneers in geomechanics, and addresses some of the most pressing issues of our time related to deep mining, and how to mitigate these issues. Solutions developed by our predecessors seem to have reached their limits as mines continue to go deeper. The International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) guidelines for rock mass characterization for excavation design also require re-thinking to reflect current knowledge and experience. Thus, a whole new approach is urgently required to increase mine safety and productivity. The paper will draw on the challenges and experiences in medicine and science that have been overcome through genuine collaboration, advances in technology, and impressive funding, which can be adopted to provide solutions to contemporary geomechanics challenges for increased safety and productivity as mines continue to go deeper.

Seismic integration schemes aim to incorporate the rock mass response provided by the historical seismic activity to improve the ability of numerical models to reproduce future response to mining. Up to now, integration schemes considered the events using quasi-static models. This paper presents case studies that consider some of the seismic and modelling issues needed to extend these schemes to include the dynamic characteristics of seismic events. The ultimate aim of an automated integration scheme seems impractical for dynamic modelling. The predictions of the WAVE elastodynamic finite difference program are, however, suitable for modelling limited numbers of events to determine either the near-field velocities and damage or the effect of fractures and excavations on the far-field low frequency response. Les projets d’intégration sismique ont le but d’incorporer la réponse de la masse rocheuse à l’activité sismique historique pour améliorer la capacité des modèles numériques à reproduire la réponse future à l’exploitation minière. Jusqu’à présent, les projets d’intégration étudiaient les évènements avec des modèles quasi-statiques. L’étude présente révèle des études de cas qui considèrent certaines des questions concernant modelage et séismes qui sont nécessaires pour porter plus loin ces projets en incluant les caractéristiques dynamiques des évènements sismiques. Le but final d’un projet d’intégration automatisé semble impraticable pour la modélisation dynamique. En revanche, les prédictions du programme élastodynamique par la méthode des différences finies WAVE sont appropriées à la modélisation d’un nombre limité d’évènements de façon à déterminer soit les vitesses à petite échelle et les dommages, soit les effets des fractures et excavations sur la réponse de basse fréquence à grande échelle. Seismische Integrationsschemata zielen darauf ab, Reaktionen der Gesteinsmasse, die von den Berichten seismischer Aktivitäten stammt, zu inkorporieren um numerische Modelle in die Lage zu versetzen, künftige Antwort zum Bergbau zu reproduzieren. Bis dato betrachteten Integrationsschemata die Fälle mit quasi-statischen Modellen. Diese Arbeit stellt Fallstudien dar, die einige der seismischen und modellierenden Fragen betrachten, die benötigt werden, um diese Schemata auszuweiten, um die dynamischen Charakeristika seismischer Fälle einzuschließen. Das Endziel eines automatisierten Integrationschemas erscheint für das dynamisches Berechnen undurchführbar. Die Vorhersagen des WAVE elastodynamisch begrenzten Unterschiedprogramms sind jedoch verwendbar für das Berechnen von begrenzten Anzahlen von Fällen, um entweder die Nahfeldgeschwindigkeiten und Schaden oder den Effekt von Brüchen und Extraktionen auf der Fernfeld Niederfrequenzantwort festzustellen.

Between 2000 and 2006, platinum production from the South African mines expanded from 206 to 307 tonnes (DME, 2007). Most of this additional metal has come from traditional ?narrow? reef stoping, generally taken to mean stoping in working places with a mining height of less than 1,5 metres. It is well known that narrow-reef stoping presents safety, technological and ergonometric challenges (Pickering, 2007). In planning for the expansion, which is still continuing, the platinum mining industry realized that it could not simply continue with traditional methods of narrow-reef mining. Particular issues identified were: ? High labour-intensivity: caused by use of hand-held rock drilling machines, labour-intensive support installation and stope cleaning; ? Dependence on rock-drillers: this occupation is no longer an attractive one and there is a reducing flow of new recruits; ? Safety: most of the work is performed close to the new faces, where there is the greatest exposure to the hazards of falling rock.

The feasibility of using hydrogen to obtain clean steels is investigated. High hydrogen contents are generally considered as detrimental due to the risk of flakes, bubbles and breakouts during casting. Hydrogen can nonetheless be removed by degassing of the steel. The results of industrial campaigns, where total oxygen content and hydrogen content were monitored, are presented. High resolution microscopy of inclusions and laboratory experiments on the rate of inclusion removal by CaO-Al2O3 slags at different partial hydrogen have been carried out. So far, evidence that hydrogen may influence inclusions or the steel cleanliness is not clear. Keywords: hydrogen, cleanliness, inclusions.

Production of ferro-chromium in the submerged-arc furnace is highly energy-intensive. Several process rates have been attempted to reduce the specific energy consumption in the production of this alloy. An exhaustive understanding of the thermo-chemical features of the production process can be used to reduce the specific power consumption significantly. The knowledge can be used to reduce the energy drain through undesired reactions in the process can be minimised. Plant trials have shown that specific energy consumption up to 100kWh/tonne of hot metal can be obtained by adopting this strategy. The process requires modification in operation practice and does not require any capital investment unlike other processes adopted for reducing power consumption. The principle of thermo-chemistry involved in this process development and results of plant trials are discussed in detail.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Mining Engineering) degreeSynopsisLiqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) has been experiencing problems with boulders after blasting where the fragment sizes exceed the maximum of 800 mm as per mine standard. As a result, the mine has employed various methods to improve the fragmentation. The goal is to produce a run-of-mine (ROM) feed that does not choke the crusher and cause delays in production. In order to achieve this goal, fragmentation distribution within the fines and coarse envelope must be optimized through effective planning of blasting activities and accurate execution.The mine determined the fines-coarse envelope within which the entire crushing system can handle fragments using Split Desktop software. It is expected that both the predicted and actual fragmentation curves lie within that envelope for optimal fragmentation. The Kuz-Ram model with blast design parameters of 2.6 m for burden, 2.8 m for spacing, and 127 mm hole diameter was used to predict the fragmentation. The results show that the blast design parameters may need altering to achieve optimum fragmentation. Furthermore, the execution of the drilling and blasting may be the cause of the fragmentation problems. The mean fragmentation size (X50) differs greatly, unlike the uniformity index (n)s values which are relatively close to each other (0.6 to 2.2). The mean squared error (MSE) values have a large range. A proposed solution is a modified burden, spacing, and hole diameter. It is concluded that blast design parameters need to be reviewed in order to obtain correct predictions. IntroductionFragmentation has an impact on the mine production cycle which comprises, inter alia, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and crushing. Correct fragmentation as set by the plant design is important as it reduces the time lost due to secondary blasting and/or loading difficulties. In this paper we analyse blast results at Liqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) in Lesotho for a period of six months. This project was undertaken to observe the trends from the blasts and to identify whether any discrepancies exist in the overall blast information. The period under study included 16 blasts."

Colin Maynard Spence was born in November 1921, and was educated at the Durban Preparatory and High Schools, in both of which he was a Dux Scholar. He graduated from the University of Natal in 1942 with a B.Sc. degree in civil engineering. In 1958 he received a Diploma in Town Planning from the same university. This paper presents an initial investigation into the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts in a two dimensional, thin reef scenario. Deposits with gradational mineralized zones, in the perpendicular sense, are not as well served by the use of reef accumulation and thickness as deposits characterized by a sharp distinction between ore and waste rock. South African Bushveld Complex platinum deposits and Witwatersrand gold deposits are examples of this distinction. The calculation of an optimal mining cut is of paramount importance in the mining of Bushveld platinum. Two-dimensional kriging of a constant stoping width mining cut is an effective method for resource calculations once a cut is decided, but this begs the question of how to decide on the cut. Comparison of multiple cuts is used as a way of achieving this decision on many of Anglo Platinum’s operations. Although the kriging of each cut is valid in isolation, occasional negative values occur when incremental grades between overlapping cuts are calculated. Negative incremental grades cannot reflect reality. They are thought to be related to the inability of the method to include the strong continuity in the perpendicular direction demonstrated by the relevant variograms. Co-kriging of related variables has been investigated as a potential means tore impose this inherent order relationship. Various co-kriging options have been investigated. The method has been tested on a real data set from an established platinum operation. One of three types of anomaly has been investigated so far. The results show that co-kriging the mining cut grade as the primary variable, with just one secondary variable, the reef thickness, eliminates most occurrences. Severe anomalies remaining are arguably indicative of population mixing and might be more effectively treated by rezoning the data. Aim—To investigate the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts as a method for resolving anomalies in the estimation of such cuts on Bushveld platinum deposits, with applicability to other thin reef type deposits with a gradational not sharp cut-off between ore and waste in the direction perpendicular to the reef. One of the most important factors leading to the success of a cement plant is its location. A multicriteria decision-making method is used to rank alternative plant locations. The set of criteria is established and corresponding criteria should be established for each case study, although this multicriteria decision-making approach has broader applicability. In this paper, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with 5 criteria is used to develop a location evaluation hierarchy for an alumina?cement plant in East Azerbaijan province of Iran. Five alternatives for the plant location are evaluated. The main criteria are transportation, water supply, power supply, fuel supply and land. Other criteria have the same importance as these five alternatives. The alternatives are ranked by a multicriteria method and the best site is proposed. The oxygen activity of the ladle slag determines the reactivity towards the steel during ladle treatment. Therefore, the in situ measurement of the oxygen activity of slags can be an important tool. The applicability of an electrochemical sensor is examined in this work. The sensor measures the electromotive force (EMF) that is established between a sample of the slag phase that is immersed in the liquid steel bath and a reference system (Cr/Cr2O3). Industrial and laboratory experiments demonstrated the capability of the sensor to detect the influence of the slag components on the measured oxygen potential. Comparison of the measured values with thermodynamically calculated values shows that the measured oxygen activity is systematically too low. This was attributed to a reaction of the steel with the slag sample. To investigate this, further lab tests were performed where the slag oxygen activity was measured after the slag had been equilibrated with the steel. The measured values were dependent on the oxygen activity (aO) of the steel. For industrial applications, it is concluded that the aO of the steel should be known and that this value is necessary for the interpretation of the measured values. Primarily ferrochrome is used to introduce chromium into steels and alloys. Chromium enhances hardness, hardenability, corrosion, abrasion and wear resistance of the steel. High carbon ferrochrome is one the cheapest sources of chromium, which finds large consumption in foundries and steel plants. However, carbon leads to problems viz. weld decay and sensitization of steels at elevated temperature causing catastrophic failure. Thus high carbon ferrochrome which otherwise enjoys financial edge over its low carbon grade is not suitable for final alloying or adjustment of chromium content. Subsequently, its addition burdens a steel maker. Hence, metallurgists around the globe have researched on finding out suitable technique for refining of ferrochrome. Traditional production methods of low carbon ferrochrome have drawbacks i.e. high refractory consumption, losses of chromium in slag and fumes etc-. Later these were overcome by adopting relatively new methods namely, metallothermic reduction, triplex process, vacuum technique to directly produce extra low carbon ferrochrome. Due to the great importance of the smelting process, it is essential to establish a calculation model on the viscosity of the slag system containing titania. In this paper, the calculation models of mass action concentrations and viscosity for the CaO-SiO2-TiO2slag system have been established according to the coexistence theory of the slag structure, as well as the referenced viscosities ofCaO-SiO2-TiO2at different temperatures and TiO2compositions. With the two models, corresponding calculated programs are made by means of programming language Matlab5.3, and the curves of viscosity of the TiO2concentration (?TiO2/%) at 1400°C, (R=0.9~1.0) are plotted. The results show that mass action concentrations of TiO2increases with increasing percentage ofTiO2, while the viscosity of CaO-SiO2-TiO2system is decreased. The results show that the models are in good agreement with the experimental and referenced data. They also shows that the models are reasonable for the CaO-SiO2-TiO2slag system. "A well-maintained tap-hole channel is important in order to achieve good and stable furnace operation over time. A worn or short tap-hole channel can lead to more violent flow, significantly increasing the fume emissions during tapping and leading to more metal being mixed with and lost to the slag. Over time, a worn tapping channel might cause side channels and damage to the lining around the tap-hole area. This can result in a burn-through which is a considerable safety risk and will cause significant production losses. At Eramet Norway Porsgrunn, tap-hole maintenance has been done regularly with electrode paste for over three decades with good results. This article summarizes some of the experiences obtained from this practice on a 33 MW SiMn furnace, as well as a change to a coal tar pitch-free binder. IntroductionA well-maintained tap-hole channel is important in order to achieve good and stable furnace operation over time. Metal and slag are regularly tapped from the furnace and may cause a lot of wear on the tapping channel, increasing the risk of lining damage and ultimately leading to a burn-through. On furnace 10 at Eramet Norway Porsgrunn, the tap-hole area is the part of the lining that has been by far the most prone to burn-through since the startup of the furnace.Experience shows that almost all lining problems have started with burn-through in the tap-hole area or in close proximity to the tap-hole. During tap-hole repairs, side channels with metal and slag have also been observed emanating from the main tapping channel. In addition, a shorter tapping channel will cause more violent flow. This can lead to more metal droplets being entrained in the slag, and increase the risk of the furnace not being closed properly at the end of the tap.As a burn-through is a considerable safety risk, and also causes significant production losses, systematic work has been performed over the years to maintain the tapping channel in order to prevent burn-through."

The shaft-type ferromanganese smelting furnace (SF) at Mizushima Ferroalloy Co., Ltd. has been in operation since startup in 1985 and is continuing to perform smoothly. Production has been increased from the original design capacity of 270t/d to 350t/d by various operational improvements. As a productivity index of the shaft-type furnace, production of 350t/d is equivalent to productivity of 0.9t/m3/d (daily production/cubic capacity of furnace). Recently, various operational improvements were implemented to achieve productivity of 1.0t/m3/d or higher, including oxygen enrichment operation, increased tapping frequency, maintenance of the throat profile, and operation with small lump coke. The target productivity of 1.0 t/m3/d was achieved in January 2005. This report describes the improvements introduced as part of this high productivity technology.
