An overview of methods of manufacture is presented, as well as the results of laboratory experiments on the making of stainless clad steels. , It is concluded that stainless clad steel can be made in South Africa with existing rolling equipment, and that good bonding between the two materials depends on clean mating surfaces, proper edge welding, and a minimum reduction of 25 per cent at a rolling temperature of 120O"C. In practice, a minimum reduction of 70 per cent at 1100cC is recommended. : Suggested applications for clad steel include parts and equipment for the chemical, petrochemical, marine engineering, and mining industries, for the building sector, and for household appliances.

Additions of boron have been found to increase the hot workability of stainless steels. Boron forms complex chromium-iron borides, primarily at grain boundaries but also on delta-ferite stringers. This paper describes how a nuclear technique based on the track-etch method was used to distinguish between borides and chromium carbides on grain boundaries and to investigate the distribution of boron in stainless steels. The method was found to be sensitive for boron, and made it possible for boron precipitates to be identified on grain boundaries and interphase boundaries.

Over 200 delegates attended the SAIMM Colloquium on Flotation, which was held at Mintek on 22nd September, 1983. In introducing the programme, the Chairman of the Technical Programme Committee, Mr Eugene Fivaz, said that an attempt had been made to strike a balance between theoretical and practical papers, which he hoped would provide something for everyone. He wished to record in advance the thanks of the Institute to S.A. Cyanamid for sponsoring the lunch, and to Bateman Equipment Limited for the cocktail party to be held at the end of the day's proceedings.

The hydraulic transportation of relatively dense slurries for backfill purposes is typically carried through vertical and horizontal pipelines under gravity. Wear in backfill pipelines has become such a major problem that it is now one of the main reasons for the relatively slow build-up of placed backfill in spite of encouraging performance results in the gold-mining industry. This paper describes tests on pipeline wear that were carried out on classified tailings from the backfill plant at Vaal Reefs East. The testwork was carried out under various conditions of slurry relative density, slurry velocity, and pipeline diameter. Empirical relationships are presented for each transportation and pipeline parameter evaluated and, finally, overall relationships between pipeline conditions and transportation parameters are proposed.

Mineral commodity prices comprise one of the key criteria in the selection of mining stocks. We contend that of the three principal elements of mineral commodity prices, spot price, forward price and long-term price, one has a greater impact on the share valuation processes used by investors. This research paper examines the extent to which each of these elements influences the valuation process. The intention is to provide investors in mining stocks with a greater understanding of how fluctuations of commodity prices over time affect the prices of the mining stocks they hold, or intend to sell or buy. Three mineral commodities, gold, silver, and copper, were used as case studies, since market data on these commodities is readily available in the public domain. Nine market indices covering all three mineral commodities were selected. These are based on clearly defined criteria with the intention of eliminating ambiguity and to test for correlation with the three sets of mineral commodity prices. Nine mining companies, which were not the primary drivers of the relevant indices employed in the study, were used to validate the results obtained from the indices in order to avoid duplication of the same correlation during cross-checking. Each commodity price was adjusted for operating costs. For each market index, an average operating cost was calculated from the companies comprising its basket, while each company?s annual operating costs were used for the stocks of the individual companies examined. The data was collected for the period January 2004 to October 2010. This period was further split up into three sub-periods to account for the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period that started in mid-2008. We conclude that mining stock prices are correlated with mineral commodity prices, but with spot and forward prices exhibiting stronger correlations than long-term price. This finding should be useful for evaluation purposes. Where cash flow methodologies such as discounted cash flow or earnings per share are used to value ordinary shares and commodity prices are required to estimate future cash flows, the findings suggest that spot prices should be used as opposed to long-term prices. The work reported in this paper is part of a current MSc research study at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Copper electrowinning models are useful for prediction of process performance, optimisation and improved understanding of complex phenomena such as current distribution without the expense of physical experiments. Recently, finite element models such as those generated in COMSOL Multiphysics have been developed for the electrowinning process. The predictive capacity of these models is improved by incorporating physical and chemical phenomena. Since physicochemical properties of electrolytes can have a significant effect on the quality of copper produced, this work was conducted to investigate the effect of such properties on electrodeposition at varying levels of copper, sulphuric acid concentration, iron concentration and temperature, in the presence of a smoothing agent. Tests were conducted at conditions similar to those for industrial copper electrowinning. Mathematical correlations were developed for the following properties; density, conductivity and diffusivity which were compared to existing models in literature and thereafter applied in a COMSOL generated model. The model predicts, current distribution at the cathode surface, deposit thickness (morphology), concentration of species within the cell and current efficiency. Current distribution output shows the impact of several phenomena on the deposit generated including the relationship between increasing copper concentration and current density and lack of influence of acid concentration on this property. On Friday, 6th June, 1986, an SAIMM party of32 set out at 06h30 for a tour of Duvha Opencast Colliery, Lesedi Village, and Duvha Power Station-all situated just outside Witbank. Duvha Colliery On arrival at the mine, the party was met by Mr. Colin Kolver, Assistant General Manager, and the guides for the morning. After refreshments had been served, Mr. MacDonald, General Manager, welcomed the tour, and a series of slides on the opencast mine and Lesedi Village were shown.

The practice of refractory lining in Fe Cr furnaces is purely based on the behavior of various refractories used in different parts of the Furnace at elevated temperatures. The choice of the pattern of lining is mostly done on traditionally based concepts. Refractory Lining of a furnace is the most crucial enabler for operational excellence for Ferro Alloys production. During the last few years, no major technological change has taken place in ?Refractory Lining Management?, only freeze lining concept is becoming popular. Many ferro chrome furnaces today, have the refractory lining problems especially at tap holes, resulting in shutdowns and production losses. The author with his experiences for the last 37 years in furnaces of all sizes tried to attempt to investigate into the reasons for premature failure of lining.

Most copper/cobalt ores from the Central African Copperbelt contain sulphidic compounds, which are not extractable in direct leaching. Roasting provides the possibility to transfer the valuable components into leachable compounds. In an operation window defined by temperature and off-gas composition it is possible to selectively oxidize iron sulphides to haematite and copper/cobalt sulphides to sulphates. Selective sulphating of the valuable minerals is an important condition for the subsequent leaching stage. The dissolved copper and cobalt are recovered by solvent extraction and electrowinning. This technology has been part of an established process for many decades. The concentrates from recent projects on the Copperbelt have lower sulphur contents, and frequently higher copper contents, than those from older projects. The paper shows the consequences of this trend for plant operation and explains useful counter actions by means of case studies. Autothermal combustion is ensured even at very low sulphur contents. Off-gas treatment has so far been based on SO2 removal through sulphuric acid production. The generated acid is used to make up acid losses in the hydrometallurgical plant section. This well-proven process combination is still the preferred route if the feed sulphur content is high enough; however, some cases may require different off-gas cleaning concepts without compromising on clean air quality. Roasting in a fluid-bed furnace remains the core of the technology. Fluid-bed roasters are easy to operate and provide an excellent control of the calcine quality. Different feeding and heat-recovery systems are used to provide a tailor-made solution for each project. Outotec built it first sulphatizing roaster in Zambia about 30 years ago. At that time, the roasting of metal sulphides was already one of the main technologies in the company. Outotec has developed roasting solutions for copper, gold, zinc, lead, molybdenum, and pyrite ores. The continuously expanded and upgraded research facilities provide an excellent basis for developing sustainable, energy-efficient, and economic solutions for copper and cobalt production in Africa.

In order to assess the requirements for online matching when using a transverse electric field (E-field) applicator to treat mineral ores continuously, the effect of varying load properties on matching has been investigated by simulation. The effective permittivity of the ore to be treated is expected to show variation on both short (< 1 s ) and long (minutes) time scales. By modelling the ore as a series of slices with alternating effective permittivity values, it was shown that permittivity variations on the scale of the expected particle size are attenuated significantly and matching is not required. For variations in permittivity on the length scale of the free-space wavelength, variations in reflected power are at most within ±10% of the mean. This is not considered operationally significant, as extreme permittivity variation over this length scale is unlikely, given the expected distribution of ore particle sizes to be treated. At typical ore transport speeds through the applicator, these variations occur on a time scale an order of magnitude shorter than the response time of typical industrial online matching equipment. This implies that online matching is neither required nor possible for short time scale variation. Long-term variations in dielectric properties can be adequately compensated for by current matching technologies. It is concluded that the transverse E-field applicator is robust to changes in the dielectric properties of crushed ores within the expected range of their variation.

This paper summarizes work carried out on the treatment of fine coal, nominally classified as minus 0,5 mm (wedge-wire screen), which is removed from the raw coal prior to the treatment of the plus 0,5 mm sizes. The minus 0,5 mm coal divides, for treatment purposes, into fines, nominally between 500 and 150 !tm, and ultrafines, nominally minus 150 !tm. Studies on processes for the treatment of minus 0,5 mm coal are discussed, and the lower size limit beneficiated is indicated for each process. The installation and operational results from a pilot froth-flotation plant treating minus 150!tm coal are described.

Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes: examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements, assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, and evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable basis for our opinion. GENERAL Invitation to attend O.F.S. Branch Meeting: Members of the Witbank/Middelburg Branch were invited to attend a branch meeting of the O.F.S. Branch on the 15th November. The subject of the meeting would be a talk on the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam Project and up to 25 members could be accommodated on the nights of the 14th and 15th November by kind invitation of members of the O.F.S. Branch. A questionnaire would be issued at a later date, to obtain the names of those interested in attending the meeting. PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The Chairman called upon Mr G. H. J. Kitson to present his joint paper, entitled: &apos;Photoelectric readings; their significance for dust control on collieries.&apos; G. H. J. Kitson (Member) and Y. J. F. Haven (Visitor). After Mr Kitson had presented his paper, both he and Mr Haven answered questions from the floor. The Chairman then thanked Mr G. H. J. Kitson for presenting the paper, and the meeting closed at 6.15 p.m.

SYNOPSIS Planning for the Finsch opencast mine is described with particular reference to the proposed stages of mining, the method used to determine the limits of surface waste rock stripping and the derivation of the waste rock mining rate. Actual mining practice is described and the possibility of installing a skipway into the open mine at a later date is discussed. In addition, the waste dumping policy is referred to: this includes the cutting of slots through the hill on the west side of the pipe to increase tramming speeds. The crushing, washing and recovery sections of the treatment plant are described together with the various changes being made to the circuit. The most important of these are the installation of X-ray sorters for the final recovery of + 7 mesh diamonds, and the vibrating grease belt for the recovery of - 7 mesh diamonds. INTRODUCTION The Finsch Mine, a subsidiary of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Limited, is situated approximately 90 miles west of Kimberley, and some two miles from the village of Lime Acres, in the Northern Cape. Lime Acres is a company village shared with the Northern Lime Company which operates a limestone quarry and works near the township. The mine is near the southern end of a well mineralized belt producing limestone, asbestos, diamonds, manganese and iron ore, and the whole area has developed rapidly in the last 20 years. Power for mining operations is drawn from the Electricity Supply Commission. The mine is conveniently close to the main Kimberley-Postmasburg railway line. Water is drawn from the Vaal River through a 57 mile State-owned pipeline at present temporarily operated by mine staff. DISCOVERY AND PROSPECTING OPERATIONS The diamondiferous orebody is situated on the farm Brits, which is State-owned ground that has been leased to the Company for the period of mining operations. There are indications of interest in the area by prospectors (Richter, de Bruin and others) over a period of some 30 years and the discovery would possibly have been made years earlier but for a law preventing prospecting for precious stones on State-owned land. Although the pipe formed a clear depression on the hill where it was situated, it was overlain by some 5 to 40 ft of banded ironstone rubble which was washed into the depression from the hillside above the pipe and obscured the deposit. In 1958, Mr Allister Thornton Fincham applied for, and was granted, the right to prospect for base minerals on the farm Brits. Asbestos is known to occur in the area and, initially, was Mr Fincham&apos;s primary interest. Feasibility studies of the on-stream analysis of lead in mineral slurries by S. K. KAWATRA. P. Eng. (Canada). Ph.D. (Australia). M.Sc. (India) (Visitor) Instruments for the measurement of lead in mineral slurries by the use of isotopes can be based on the absorption of Iow-energy gamma rays, backscattering of beta particles, or X-ray fluorescence. The merits of each method are discussed, and the reasons for the selection of the beta-backscattering technique are given. A system using this technique has been designed, constructed, and tested on samples of concentrates from an industrial concentrator.

Rock breakage by drilling and blasting is fundamental to every hard-rock mining operation. The subject was an apt choice for a mining school because many technological changes have taken place since the subject was last presented some ten years ago. However, because of the development of surface mining, it was decided that two schools should be held: one for underground mining, and the other for surface mining. The School on Underground Mining was held at the University of the Witwatersrand in February 1986.Copper 87 COPPER 87 is an international conference organized by metallurgical and academic institutions of two of the largest producers of copper in the world, Chile and Canada.

This paper reports on the use of the MINSIM-D stress-analysis program for the modeling of two large seismic events that occurred on the same fault eleven years apart. It was found that the first event (magnitude 5,2) could not be ascribed to purely mining-induced stresses, indicating that the largest seismic events probably result from the interaction of mining-induced stresses with large scale tectonic stresses. However, the stress changes induced during eleven years of mining were found to be capable of generating sufficient excess shear stress (ESS) to be responsible for the second event (magnitude 4,3), The upper limit for the magnitude of purely mining-induced events was found to be approximately 4,3.
