n today's marketplace with high metals prices, many operations are faced with the challenge of improving recovery and at the same time maximizing availability. New operations under feasibility studies have the same requirements, with the additional need for ever higher capacities. Economies of scale have proved a vital competitive advantage in the game of ore dressing. Flotation is the most widely used method for extracting valuable minerals from ore - despite its mature age of 100 years. Customer demand has driven the development to increasing cell sizes, and in most cases, this has brought the advantages of both lower capital expenditure and lower operational and maintenance cost. The challenge of scale up, however, is to meet the metallurgical performance requirements in the larger volumes. The paper outlines recent trends and developments in flotation technology, and presents new solutions designed to address the needs for increased capacities as well as improved performance. Whether the goal is to improve existing operations or to scale up new equipment, computer aided tools are playing a key role in shortening the development cycle and reducing costly trial-and-error tests in full scale. Using the new tools and validation thereof will be outlined, as well as the development principles behind the new solutions. Plant results and experiences with the new developments are presented and discussed in several cases around the world.

Gone are the days of stock-standard diamond beneficiation and final recovery circuits that could, with minor modifications, be adapted to treat any diamond-bearing ore source. A new era has dawned, offering the opportunity to streamline existing diamond processing operations or develop simpler, more efficient, and economical diamond processing plants, with the focus on more efficient comminution, beneficiation, and final recovery. This change in scene has been brought about by: ? The introduction, rapid development, and maturation of multiple comminution, sorting, and recovery technologies ? The need to adapt to a new standard of project approach post the commodity super-cycle phase, where optimizing existing operations and developing scalable, ?fit for purpose? new mines are fast becoming the norm in diamond processing plants in both primary and alluvial operations ? The quest for energy efficiency and lower labour costs ? More remote and inaccessible reserves (under lakes, tops of mountains etc.). This paper serves to identify some technology advances and demonstrates how these could be considered as replacements for or in combination with conventional technologies to arrive at an optimum techno-economic solution. To name a few applications/technologies: ? Comminution: conventional cone crusher, modified/specialized cone crusher, and the high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR). Although significant advances have been made in recent years, this paper only briefly covers comminution within the beneficiation circuit design ? Waste sorting: NIR (near-infrared) sorting, optical (colour) sorting, XRF (X-ray fluorescence) ? Primary concentration by combining dense media separation (DMS) with either XRT (X-ray transmissive), pulsed X-ray, jigs, or pan plants depending on the application, scale, and economics ? Final recovery of diamonds with either conventional X-ray technology, pulsed X-ray technology, or XRT. From recent studies, it can be concluded that there is no longer a standard solution, but rather the ?right? or appropriate solution. Through combining a sound knowledge of the ore source (ore dressing studies or onmine data gathering) and leveraging off the advances in technologies, one is able, through trade-off studies, to arrive at the ultimate techno-economic configuration, the ?right? solution. Emphasis is placed on maximizing diamond recoveries through appropriate technology selection and minimizing the associated costs in an effort to de-bottleneck or improve efficiencies of existing diamond processing plants, or to arrive at the ideal new diamond process plant design..

Since AlphaGo defeated the best human player in the game of Go in 2016 - something thought to be an impossible achievement - machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning have caught the attention of scientists, the media and the general public alike. This recent development in machine learning (let us remember that neural networks have been available for decades now) opens new possibilities in the areas of modelling and process control. However, little has been reported in the minerals processing industry about these new possibilities and opportunities. This paper presents and introduces the topic of reinforcement learning and the different platforms that allow its implementation. The paper shows the consequences of using reinforcement learning for the specific area of process control and optimisation. As an example, the authors present the use of reinforcement learning for the control of a SAG mill closed with a pebble crusher using industrial data from an operation. A comparison with advanced model-based process control is provided, showing the benefits and shortcomings of reinforcement learning as a new control and optimisation technique. Drying, calcination, prereduction, and smelting are the main steps in conventional crude ferronickel production. Industrially, these steps are conducted using the rotary kiln-electric arc furnace (RKEF) process. In this paper, calcination characteristics of Sivrihisar laterite ores from the Central Anatolia region are investigated. The extent of elimination of chemically bound water and other volatiles was studied by experiments conducted at various temperatures in the 250?800°C range. Phase changes were examined using X-ray diffractometry. For the particle size used in the study, 300°C was determined to be almost sufficient for complete transformation of goethite to haematite, and 700°C was required for effective elimination of all volatiles in the ore.

An account is given of a four-phase system for the appraisal of a mineral project while it is still in the exploration stage, and for continual consideration of a favourable appraisal until the production stage is reached. There are ten stages from the idea of a likely project to the production stage, and all the staff that are eventually to be concerned with the development of the project are involved at an early stage.

Ore sorting is a technology that is increasingly used to process primary raw materials. Timeconsuming and expensive empirical state-of-the-art test work is carried out to assess whether the use of ore sorting for the enrichment of a particular ore makes technical and economic sense. With the innovative simulation-based approach presented here, it is possible to direct the selection of a suitable sensor based on quantitative mineralogical and textural data, thus avoiding much of the empirical studies. Required data can be collected quickly and cost-effectively using available methods of automated mineralogy. The obtained parameters such as mineral grain size distribution, modal mineralogy, mineral area and mineral density distribution have been utilised in this study to simulate the prospects of success of ore sorting, applying different types of sensors. Empirical tests with commercially available sensor systems have been conducted to experimentally validate the predictions of the simulations. The estimation of the target mineral grade can be further optimised by the use of machine learning algorithms for the integration of automated mineralogy data and sensor data. The approach can easily be adapted to other types of raw materials and thus has great potential to become a key technology for the optimisation of processing experiments. Rates of return realized on investments in the gold mines of the newer goldfields outside the Witwatersrand were calculated and analysed over various time intervals and on various bases. It is shown that these rates of return are strongly correlated with changes in the gold price and cannot be equated with the returns that are expected when investments are made, and that the changes in gold price also affect the rates of return on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as a whole. These correlations are used, together with a limited application of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, to suggest the expected levels of threshold returns in real terms for new mining projects, for projects on existing mines, and for share valuations.

Logistic curves are used in the prediction of the primary production of tin metal from estimated worldwide resources. Such curves are asymptotic to the total cumulative reserves, which are a function of prevailing metal prices and total resources. The figures for tin resources are based on the findings of Robertson and of Brobst and Pratt, the latter authors including estimates of undiscovered deposits. It is suggested that tin production will slump from the present level to 100000 long tons per annum by the end of the century, but will reach a new peak of 200 000 long tons some thirty years later. It appears that production will never exceed 300000 long tons per annum unless substantial new resources, excluding those predicted, are discovered.

The project report is based on vacation work done by the writer at the Khutala Colliery during December/January 2009?2010. The purpose of this report is to explain and describe the design process in a multi-seam mine design for coal extraction at the Khutala Colliery. The multi-seam design will focus on the No. 2 and No. 4 seams as these are the seams that are currently being mined by underground methods at Khutala Colliery. The seam thicknesses and the parting thickness between the seams provide suitable conditions for designing a multi-seam mine design. An investigation into the pillar design aspects is carried out followed by a numerical modelling analysis of various scenarios. This analysis validates the first principles approach provided by multi-seam design guidelines. The design results from the analysis of the selected pillar design indicate sufficient parting for primitive conditions between seams, thus illuminating the need for superimposing in-panel pillars. This multi-seam mine design confirms the potential for the extraction of coal in a new panel. The design indicates that significant amounts of power station coal are present and suitable for extraction by room and pillar mining methods. The panel block indicates 401 625 tonnes of ROM coal. This block has a life of panel that will be mined just over a 4-month period. This 4-month period is assumed to mined at a production rate of 48 000 tonnes per month. The improvement of coal waste management practices, through the co-disposal of waste rock with sulphur-lean fine waste tailings (<1 mm in size), can potentially mitigate acid rock drainage (ARD). On exposure to natural oxidants, the sulphide compounds present in mine discards generate acidity, creating a cyclical oxidation process intensified by iron and sulphur oxidising microorganisms. To inhibit the emergence of ARD, a stable mine dump may be constructed that is structurally stable and incompressible through the mixing of complementary waste fractions that reduce voids and access to acid generating surfaces. However, large voids manifest as scale increases, due to decreased particle interlock, enabling the unrestricted access of oxidants leading to the early onset of ARD. To avoid this phenomenon, enhanced packing approaches based on geochemical and geotechnical characterisation tests were employed to improve bed stability. These were assessed for long-term prevention using aggressive oxidative conditions typical of heap leaching applications. Favourable results were obtained for both blended and multi-layered systems. However, long-term success was most notable in beds with alternating layers of waste rock and fine waste tailings with co-mingled systems being more susceptible to failure. Deconstructed co-disposed beds provided valuable insight into post-leach structural transformations. Results indicated that relative changes in initial coarse discards to fine waste ratios were most notable in blended systems. Mass fractions of the comparatively more mobile fine wastes increased axially down these test columns that ultimately resulted in increased contact of oxidants with the acid generating waste discards. Conversely, more consistent ratios were observed in multi-layered configurations. In these systems, near impervious hardpans were created by the moisture retaining fine tailings, forming stable structures with neutralising barriers sustained at each alternating layer. Consistent with post-leach geotechnical characteristics, static acid-base accounting tests showed that the uppermost sections of blended systems were more susceptible to oxidation due to structural failure with fine particles migration, while the more stable multi-layered configuration evenly maintained neutralising capacity. The status of the South African research and development programme on continuous ion exchange, which was aimed at the technical and economic assessment of that process for the recovery of uranium, is reviewed. The first phase of this programme, which has now been completed, involved development investigations on various pilot plants and culminated in the successful operation of a large-scale demonstration plant and the incorporation of the system in a number of new South African uranium plants. This account highlights the engineering aspects and the design fo the system, its adaptation to process flowsheets, and plans for future development.

Considerable practical knowledge and effective use of empirical evidence is required in the design of tunnel support systems. In many instances, it is unclear how individual support elements interact with fractured rock and which elements of the support system are critical in controlling and containing the movement of material proximate to the excavation. The present paper outlines a displacement discontinuity approach that allows the coupling of surface constraints, in the form of liner or mesh material, to an explicit representation of time-dependent rock discontinuity creep movements. The method is illustrated for a simple square-shaped tunnel profile in which the fracture zone is mobilized by an imposed stress field. A crucial aspect of the model is the computational treatment of the coupling between the liner material and there presentation of the fractured rock mass. This allows the response of the liner material to be assessed quantitatively in terms of the possible reduction of movement in the rock mass. The importance of installing the liner timeously after the excavation is formed is illustrated in a specific example. A number of computational difficulties in simulating liner-rock interaction mechanisms are identified.

The gold mine sector is presently facing low gold prices as well as technological challenges. Its competitiveness and survival will depend on new mining methods and equipment to improve ore extraction. In 1999, Natural Resources Canada has invested new funds over a period of three years at CANMET’s Experimental Mine to establish the Narrow-Vein Mining Project. A team of engineers and researchers specialized in mining, mechanics and electronics engineering are working to meet the critical need of ore-extraction technology. CANMET’s programme in mechanization and automation for narrow-vein mining had, prior to 1999, realised several important achievements, many in co-operation with a consortium of mining companies(Soredem). The investment of new funds in this area will contribute to develop technologies to improve the productivity, as well as health and safety conditions of the narrow-vein mining industry. Several important impacts of this project will be monitored. In particular, a database of methods and equipment used in narrow-vein mining is being developed. A key thrust is to identify operators’ needs with respect to the development and automation of mining methods and equipment. Based on those needs, research and development projects will be created. The paper will present the objectives of the narrow-vein mining project and some of the results, including the web site developed to present the results of the project.
