The operation described herein differs from the usual practice in the Tri-State district in two important respects: (1) the ore is loaded into cars which are tramped to the shaft and hoisted on self-dumping cages, and (2) about 30 per cent of the ore is loaded by power shovels. The four-month period covered by the cost data appended at the end of the paper immediately followed a period of about one year during which the mine was shut down, and the expense incident to the resumption of operations is reflected in the costs. The author acknowledges the assistance of C. F. Jackson, mining engineer, U. S. Bureau of Mines, in the preparation of this paper and the compilation of the data.

Information is presented on remote sealing of a mine passageway through a borehole by five methods : PPnneeuummaattiicc injection of mineral wool and sand, ureaformaldehyde foam , balloons , urethane foam, and caving by blasting . An adaptation of the method using pneumatically conveyed mineral wool was tried in an operating mine . Further research is needed to simplify and to improve the techniques involved , as well as to explore the possibilities of other methods and combinations .

As part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop substitute or improved performance refractory materials for metallurgical applications, the Tuscaloosa Research Center has evaluated the effect of additives on sintering and strength properties of aialon (silicon aluminum oxynitride) compositions fabricated by a conventional powder metallurgy technique. Additions of Y203, Gd203, CeO2, MgO, ZrO2, ZrSiO4, and MgA12O4 to a sialon composition containing 70 pct ß-Si3N4 + 30 pct a-A1203 increased sintered densities by as much as 50 pct over densities of undoped material. The studies also indicated that sintered densities reached a maximum between 20 and 30 mole-pct a-A1203 when a series of sialon compositions of a-Si3N4, having 6.7 to 57.9 pet a-Al203, were doped with Y203, Gd2O3, and MgO. In studies to establish the effect of the crystalline phase of the silicon nitride and alumina used, tests were made using a- and ß-Si3N4 and a- and ?-A12 03 as starting materials. The tests indicated that when using an addition of 5 wt-pct Y203, best results were obtained with a sialon composed of 74.4 mole-pct a-Si304 and 25.6 mole-pct ?-A1203. In other tests made with this sialon composition MOR values of 28,120 and 29,500 psi at 25° C, and 23,520 and 16,850 psi at 1,400° C, were obtained when doping with 5 wt-pct ZrSiO4 and ZrO2, respectively.

The study of oil production methods with reference to the amount of oil originally pressent in the oil-bearing, formations has developed the fact that-ordinary methods-of production remove only a part of the oil actually present. In fact, it is generally realized that when a field is abandoned more oil remains in the sand than has ever been removed. As a consequence of this realization, the petroleum engineer has devoted considerable tine in recent years in devising methods for increasing the percentage of recovery. His studies have indicated that in most cases the total production of a field is dependent upon the available gas rather than upon the available oil. Mien the gas in the sand is exhausted, oil production ceases even though there may be enormous quantities of oil remaining unrecovered. Consequently, any method of conserving the gas or increasing the supply of gas will increase the ultimate recovery from a field. The practice of producing oil under vacuum increases the effectiveness of the gas remaining in the sand, as well as furnishing more gas by evaporating the light fractions of the crude. Pumping ' compressed gas or air down selected wells of a lease has been found to increase the production of oil from the surrounding wells. Studies of oil and gas ratios have indicated that much of the available gas has been wasted as far as its effectiveness on oil production is concerned. his has led to the development of "stop cocking"3 and the practice of producing under back pressure3, which methods aim, to obtain more effective work from the gas with reference to the amount of oil delivered to the well.

The Bureau of Mines studied the displacement of the roof in a portion of the Bear coal mine near Somerset, Colo, Horizontal-and vertical-displacement gages were installed in a five-entry section during normal room-and-pillar mining procedures. Monitoring of the roof continued until this section was mined out. Displacement measurements in combination with known time lapses between mining and bolting operations indicate that once support is achieved, the length of unsupported time does not appear to affect long-term roof stability in the mine under investigation.

"Cooperation was arranged between the mine operators, the Michigan College of Mines and Technology, and the Bureau of Mines for a study of present milling practice in the copper district of Michigan. Work was actively commenced in January, 1928.In Michigan copper occurs almost wholly as native copper. An insignificant amount of copper sulphide is present. The native copper occurs in two general classes of formations--namely, amygdalaid and conglomerate.In respect to ore dressing, the outstanding peculiarities of the two types of copper are: (1) In the amygdaloid, the relative coarseness of the metallic copper, which is almost completely liberated at approximately 48-mesh comminution; (2) the sprangly and flakey physical character of much of the liberated copper after crushing; (3) in the conglomerate, the extremely fine dissemination of the metallic copper, which is not completely liberated by crushing to -200 mesh.Because the study to date has been confined almost wholly to amygdaloid ores, the conglomerate class is not considered herein. The conglomerate ore is being efficiently treated, and the loss of copper is small.The amygdaloid ore contains a silicious gangue of which 80 per cent has a specific gravity of less than 2.84, 92 per cent of less than 2.94, and 98 per cent of less than 3.17. Epidote of 3.25 specific gravity is noticeably present, and accumulates on the table concentrators, from which it is hard to make clean con¬centrate and middling recovery.The general nature of the amygdaloid ores varies a little from mine to mine, but the general characteristics are the same, as is shown later by flotation tests."

The feasibility of removing sulfur dioxide by carbon monoxide reduction in a fixed-bed catalytic reactor was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The reduction rate of sulfur dioxide with carbon monoxide was significantly dependent upon the iron and alumina content of the mixed catalyst. Maximum catalytic activity was obtained with about 40 percent iron-alumina mixture with a nominal gas mixture of 10 percent carbon monoxide, 5 percent sulfur dioxide, and the balance nitrogen. The synergistic effect of this catalyst mixture was explained by a dual reaction site mechanism, with both iron and alumina augmenting their specific sites at their interparticle contacts. The catalytic activity also increased with decreasing catalyst pellet size. With O.7-mm pellets, the entire pellet appeared to be catalytically active in a 2-gram catalyst bed. The apparent activation energy of the reaction was 18.3 kcal per mole in the temperature range of 350° to 600° C. Carbonyl sulfide (COS) was produced by the interaction of carbon monoxide and sulfur. The amount decreased with decreasing CO concentration. The ratio of COS formed per SO2 removed reached a maximum at about 400° C. The reaction rate appeared to be independent of S02 concentration in the range of 0.2 to 16 percent. The rate, however, increased directly with the CO concentration in the range of 5 to 20 percent. The presence of CO2 (<15 percent) had no appreciable effect on the rate. However, not over 0.5 percent oxygen could be tolerated. This method appears feasible for removing S02 from waste gas if the oxygen is removed prior to the catalytic S02 reduction process.

"The size of off-highway trucks has increased substantially over the last decade, bringing about a radical change in truck maintenance practices and procedures. As a result, surface mine maintenance mechanics today are faced with the increased hazards of working with larger and heavier tools and components and doing repairs at greater heights, thereby exposing them to a high potential for serious injury or death. Not surprisingly, the number of accidents involving truck maintenance mechanics is significantly increasing.The Bureau of Mines has assessed the haulage truck maintenance safety problem, analyzing maintenance-accident data over the 7-yr period, 1978- 84, in terms of personnel, job activities, truck components and systems, tools involved, and truck design. This assessment, based on the review and interpretation of 1,225 haulage truck maintenance accident reports, identified major factors contributing to these accidents. Overall, young, inexperienced workers are involved in most accidents. A typical maintenance accident involves a male mechanic under 33 yr old, with less than 5 yr job experience. INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, surface mine maintenance and repair operations have changed radically. The number of maintenance personnel has grown along with the hazards of working with larger and heavier components at greater heights and with larger and heavier tools. Furthermore, transfer of skills from over-the-road vehicle mechanics is not as feasible as it once was, because of the ever increasing size of mining equipment and the complexity of its design. In short, surf ace mine equipment maintenance and repair has become increasingly sophisticated as well as labor intensive, necessitating further research and evaluation in terms of both safety and efficiency (1, 7-8) 2"

Maintain good blowing face ventilation while taking deeper cuts with a radio-remote, scrubber-equipped miner. Approach A six week in-mine study of face ventilation effectiveness was made by comparing the existing MSHA-approved blowing curtain setback distance of 25 ft with brattice set back distances of up to 50 ft. Effectiveness was determined by measuring methane levels at the face and in the immediate return. How It Works Blowing ventilation systems are commonly used in mines because the high velocity air stream created by these systems rapidly mixes with and dissipates methane generated during the cutting of coal. A drawback to blowing ventilation is that the work area is placed in return air and this may create dust compliance problems for the shuttle car and mining machine operator. To clean dust from the return a number of mining machine manufacturers supply dust scrubbers built into the machine. Dust-laden air is drawn into ducting at the front of the mining machine&apos;s boom and is ducted to a scrubbing unit located on the machine&apos;s main frame. The clean air from the scrubber is discharged as a high velocity jet toward the return, generally from the left fender of the mining machine. When taking cuts deeper than 20 to 25 ft with a scrubber-equipped machine, the machine&apos;s discharge is in by the mouth of the blowing curtain, creating a concern by mine workers that a loss of air to the face could result. However, Bureau of Mines research found that the push or throw of air toward the return by the scrubber discharge jet allows good face ventilation to be maintained with extended curtain setbacks.

The first thing to consider in prevention of electric shock is the voltage of the circuit. No person can be sure that he will not be killed, even from a 110-volt circuit, if he makes proper contact with the circuit so as to cause the maximum current to pass through his body. As the voltage is increased to 250 volts, 500 volts, or 2,300 volts the danger from contact with the electric circuit is increased, Alternating current of the same nominal voltage is possibly more dangerous than direct current. Experience has taught us that both will cause death, and that if the fatalities from this source are to be kept low, certain precautions in the guarding of circuits must be observed.

This paper gives the cost and describes the mining of 55 tons of nickel-bearing rock by hand methods from a prospect in southern Nevada, June 15, 1937, by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines. The geology, mineralogy, and problems related to future development also are discussed briefly. The main object was to obtain a 55-ton sample within the limited period during which funds were available; little time was available to make a first-hand detailed study of the possibility of commercial ore deposits being found. The sample was desired by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau for experimental purposes at the Electro-Metallurgical Station at Boulder City, Nev. The term "ore" is used loosely in the following discussion to designate dike material containing nickel and copper, without consideration of its commercial value. A variety of dynamic failure cases with regional impact were described at a bump symposium held in 1958. These types of events, while rare, are of particular interest because their ability to impact a large area has disaster potential. These cases can be grouped into two broad classes of events by mechanism. These are (1) slip along steeply dipping faults and (2) fracturing of strong strata above, or below, the coal seam. Both failure modes produce dynamic or ?shock? loads on the perimeter (roof, rib, floor) of mine openings. Special consideration should be given to these failure modes in planning of deep coal mines since their occurrence is not within the professional experience of many contemporary workers, and their potential is not evaluated by many of the analysis tools commonly used to evaluate hazards in coal mine plans.

This report presents the results of a U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of smoke detectors placed in conveyor belt entries of underground coal mines. The selected mines are located in six different Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) districts, are operated by seven different companies, and use atmospheric monitoring systems from seven different manufacturers. Principal concerns are early detection and warning of fires, reliability of operation, frequency of maintenance, and adaptability of detectors to monitoring systems and the mining environment. The data contained in this report provide for some comparisons between smoke detectors and CO sensors, specifically in the areas of early detection of fires and susceptibility to nuisance alarms due to diesel exhaust contaminants. Finally, recommendations for performance standards, sensitivity tests, detector classification, and maintenance are presented.

Samples of gas were obtained directly from the coalbed during drilling of horizontal and vertical boreholes in six different formations. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography for C1 to C5 hydrocarbons and for 02, H2, H2, He, and C02. Methane in the gas varied from 63 to 99 percent; carbon dioxide from 0.1 to 15 percent. The CH4 /CO2 ratio varied and showed no apparent correlation with age, rank, or bed. The majority of samples contained ethane, propane, and butane; hydrogen and helium were found in some samples. Oxygen and nitrogen were usually present, possibly as a result of air contamination. A more extensive sampling program would be necessary to establish relationship between the amount and composition of the gas in the coalbed and other factors.

Medium-frequency (MF) techniques have been successfully .[pplied] to the problem of radio voice communications in both coal and metal and nonmental mines. Long range is achieved by taking advantage of existing mine conductors that carry and propagate the signal over vast areas. It is very likely that in the near future such systems will become the referred method for general mine communications. MF techniques can also be applied to the areas of in-mine control and monitoring. Preliminary work in this area is described. In a western mine, locomotives are being operated under MF remote control in a loading operation. In several eastern mines, MF has been evaluated as a method for monitoring the status of devices in remote areas of the mines. All control and monitor information uses existing mine conductors.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a procedure for removing excess iron from representative samples of bauxite ore from the Quapaw deposit of American Cyanamid Co., Saline County, Ark., in order to produce a beneficiated ore suitable for use in the alum industry, At the request of the sponsoring company, the samples were reduction-roasted at 800° C. and then magnetically separated. Although some rejection of iron was effected under these conditions, the general results were not satisfactory, A much more successful procedure, from the standpoints of both rejection of iron and recovery of alumina, consisted of a short (l5-minute), low-temperature (400° C.) oxidizing roast, followed by a 2-minute interval in a hydrogen atmosphere, then cooling to room temperature, and, finally, high-intensity magnetic separation to remove the iron.

As an integral part of the investigation of critical and essential minerals in Alaska , the Bureau of Mines examined the lead deposits in the Slana area . Four examinations were made during June , July, and August 1945 in the 200 - square -mile area immediately northwest of Slana . The settlement of Slana lies near the conflux of the small Slana River with the mighty Copper River less than 60 miles southwest of Tek Junction on the Alaska Highway . Travel through the area and the examination of the properties were conducted by a three-man crew consisting of the author , a caterpillar operator , and a laborer . An RD6 caterpillar , equipped with blade and winch , was used in breaking trail and freighting through the country . Supplies and equipment were loaded on a 7- by 14 -foot , double - end , go -devil , which was hauled by the tractor .

Twelve subjects participated in an investigation of the biomechanical stresses of asymmetric lifting in stooped and kneeling postures. Three factors were manipulated in this study: Posture (stooped or kneeling), height of lift (35 or 70 cm), and weight of lift (15, 20, or 25 kg). Subjects were required to lift or lower a box every 10 seconds for a period of 2 minutes. Electromyography (PIG) of eight trunk muscles was collected during a lift in this period. The PIG data, normalized to maximum extension and flexion exertions in each posture, were input to a biomechanical model and used to predict compression and shear forces at the L, level of the lumbar spine. Results from the EMG-driven biomechanical model indicated that compression was greater when lifting to a higher shelf (p < 0.001), and indicated a significant interaction between posture and the weight of the lifting box (p < 0.01). Peak lateral shear was not significantly affected by any main effects or interactions (p < 0.05). Anterior shear was increased with increasing height of lift (p < 0.001), and also by the posture x weight interaction (p c 0.01). A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicated a complex relationship for recruitment of the eight trunk muscles, with the triple interaction being significant (p < 0.001). The results of this investigation will be used to evaluate safe loads for lifting in these restricted postures.

Drift mining, according to California mining terminology - and it is distinctly a California development - is the blocking out and extraction (breasting) of the auriferous gravels of an ancient buried stream either through tunnels, inclines, or shafts; it is one of the minor divisions of the larger classification known as placer mining. The contribution of each of these divisions and of lode mining to the gross production of gold in California totals as follows:3 [ ] The total amount of gold recovered from the placers of California from 1848, when Marshall discovered the precious metal in the mill race at Coloma, to 1928, was $1,226,515,404. The same period saw a total gold production from all operations of $1,823,562,360.

A multiple drill carriage or "jumbo," which is believed to be unique in both design and performance, was constructed and has been in use for the past year at the Bureau of Mines experimental oil-shale mine near Rifle, Colo. This jumbo mounts four long feed percussion drills and is so designed that two men can operate all four drills. Before the jumbo was placed in operation, a minimum of eight man-shifts was required to drill 72 fifteen-foot holes in headings 60 feet wide and 27 feet high. The sane round is now drilled by two men in about 6 hours. Over 500 feet of drilling per man shift is easily and consistently accomplished. Use of the jumbo has resulted in a 75 percent reduction in drilling labor and a substantially lower drilling cost.
