This paper, which describes mining methods and costs at the Kearney zinc-lead mine, is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in varicus mining districts of the United States. The Kearney mine, which is owned by the New Mexico Consolidated Mining Co., a subsidiary of the Peru Mining Co. (Illinois Zinc), is situated a few miles southeast of the town of Hanover, in the northwest corner of sec. 27, T. 17 S., R. 12 W., in the Central Mining District, Grant County, N. Mex. (Figs. 1 and 2.) This report presents a brief history of the district, describes the geology, and outlines methods of prospecting and exploration, including eampling and estimation of tonnages and values. Development and mining methods are explained, and transportation, ventilation, drainage, safety measures, and organizatich are described. The wage scale and mining costs comprise the concluding sections of the report.

"INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSIONSThe first three reports of investigations 5/ in this series, pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit dealt with the dust produced by blasting, the effect of stemming on gases generated by blasting, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite.This report covers an investigation of the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite, such as a missed hole.The practice of drilling a new hole a foot from a missed hole to blast out the missed hole should be prohibited. It is dangerous, as is evidenced by the number of miners killed through drilling into missed holes. It is even more hazardous in a mine on a multiple-shift basis, in which the same miners do not drill succeeding rounds."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, cooperated with Tecrete Industries Pty. Ltd. and BHP Australia Coal in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage of four seal and two stopping designs for use in underground coal mines. A fundamental safety research area for NIOSH is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach to achieve this goal is to develop new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion isolation protection for the mining personnel against ignitions that originate from within the gob or. other worked-out areas of the mine Full-scale seals and stoppings were constructed in the Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. They were ail--leakage tested, then subjected to a series of explosions with average pressure pulses ranging from 25 to 500 kPa (3.5 to 72 psi). Instrumentation measured seal displacement and acceleration as a function of time, providing data to assist in the development of numerical models 1'01- future seal design. All three seals designed with Meshblock wire forlnwo~-k ant1 a lnonolithic shotcrete core withstood the first explosion test, which generated an avcr-age rnaximu~n pressure of - 140 kPa (-20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. These seals I-anged from 175 to 325 mm thick. They included a 2.7-m-high by 325-mm-thick seal that was tesled 27 hr after completion against this - 140-kPa explosion pressure, a special requirement of the test program. This seal survived explosions with pressure pulses up to 300 kPa (43 psi). The 2.3-m-high by 325-mm-thick Meshblock seal survived three explosion tests with overpressures up to 455 kPa (66 psi) and satisfied the air leakage criteria. A I ,200-mm-thick plug seal was constructed of two Gunmesh formwork walls in-filled with shotcrete and a 3,450-kPa (500-psi) strength Aquablend core. This plug seal survived three explosions with pressure pulses ranging 11-om 150 lo 430 kPa (-22 to 62.5 psi) with no measurable postexplosion air leakage. Two Gunmesh stoppings with thicknesses 01' 40 and 75 inln withstood explosion overpressures of 23 and 115 kPa, respectively. Anchoring all seal and stopping designs into the roof, ribs, and floor with steel "rootbolts" provided very effective boundary constraint that is critical to the performanceofstructures subject to explosion overpressures.

The Convertol process, recently developed in western Germany, is a new method of cleaning and dewatering coal-washery slurries. It is a modified bulk-oil process, in which a very small quantity of heavy oil is dispersed over the surfaces of the coal particles, followed by a screen centrifuge operation in which the water and dirt (clay, shale, and pyrite particles) are thrown out through the screen perforations and the clean coal particles are retained on the screen and discharged as a dewatered, clean coal product of 8- to l0-percent surface moisture. It is reported, also, that the process oil, all of which is retained in the clean-coal product, adds to the coking power of the coal and facilitates the production of briquets, reducing the proportions of binding material required.

"During the coming winter, it is probable that many householders who have habitually been users of anthracite coal will be obliged to turn to some other fuel for heating purposes, because of the limited supply of anthracite. The next best fuel, from a standpoint of cleanliness and ease of operation, is coke, but here again the supply is inadequate and the householder will have to fall back on bituminous coal. Though bituminous coal has the dis¬advantage of being dirty to handle, requiring more care in firing, and of giving off considerable smoke, it will be more generally available, costs less, and in the better grades which will naturally find their way to the domestic market, is higher in heat value, and contains less ash than anthracite.Choice of CoalThere a variety of bituminous coals are available, the householder should choose a low volatile coal, such as New River, Pocahontas, or some other ""smokeless"" coal, or the British coal now being offered in the markets along the Atlantic seaboard. Though not necessary to have the coal sized, as is the case with anthracite, it will be found cleaner to use coal from which the fine dirt has been screened. If it is found that excessive dust is caused when firing the coal, this can be reduced by slightly wetting the coal at the front of the bin, as it is being used.Method of Firingusing bituminous coal instead of anthracite in the domestic furnace, it will be necessary to use an entirely different method of fir Instead of leveling the fuel bed and putting on fresh coal in an even layer over the entire fire box, the coked and partly burned coal remaining from the previous firing should be pushed as much as possible to one side of the box, and the fresh coal thrown into the empty side so as to leave some burning coal exposed. In this way the green coal is heated slowly, the volatile gases are given off gradually, and are ignited by the burninggoing to waste up the chimney unburned."

Design a high-production coal mining machine with inherent low dust generation and low frictional ignition potential. Approach Constant depth linear cutting (CDLC) provides a longterm solution to excessive dust generation from shearers and continuous mining machines through new design of the rotary drum culling system. Problems with rotary drum systems, which must be eliminated to control the dust generation at the source, include the effect of a con¬stantly varying depth of cut using fixed bit spacing, secondary fragmentation of already broken coal and, frictional heating of bits and entrainment of dust by fanning action due to high drum rotational speed, Each bit on a rotary drum enters the coal face at zero depth of cut, goes to some maximum depth at the horizontal centerline during sump, and exits at zero depth.

"A 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Blomechanlcs (1) describes lung disease as a major national health problem. The report cites three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns of the lung. These areas are outlined below.1. In cases of respiratory distress, pressure driven artificial respirators are used. A new technique using high frequency respiration is quite promising, but the pressure distribution in the lung as a function of frequency is not yet known. At these frequencies of 1 to 60 Hz, the lung expands asynchronously (2) and a better understanding of these expansion nonunlformltles could provide valuable Information about the mechanics of high frequency ventilation.2. Listening to the sounds In the lung can yield valuable Information about the state of the lung. To improve the technique, a better understanding of how acoustic waves propagate through the lung is needed.3. The response of the lung as It Is subjected to acoustic excitation, dynamic loading or shock waves is not well understood. A better knowledge of these responees can lead to improved treatment for patients subjected to either explosive pressure waves or car crashes.4. Researchers are measuring the acoustic Impedance of the Iung to detect early states of dysfunction. Sneckenberger and Whitmoyer (3) have reported Impedances obtained at acoustic frequencies up to about 6000 Hz. However, It la not certain which parts of the lung are responding to the acoustic excitation.To Investigate the vibratory characteristics of the lung, excised rat lungs were excited via the trachea with acoustic waves at frequencies up to 6000 Hz. Thie paper describes an Instrumentation system, utlllzlng time-averaged holographic Interferometry, to detect and quantify the response of the lung surface to the acoustic excitation."

"A remarkable explosion of fire-damp caused by a discharge of lightning at the new shaft at the Sitalpur coal mine, has been reported by the Chief Inspector of Mines of India, who gave the following details:""The explosion occurred during a thunderstorm, and the evidence showed that a flash of lightning had, to all appearances, passed down the shaft caus¬ing disruptive discharges at certain points between the guides and the winding rope, rending the latter at two places situated respectively .228 .feet and 278 feet from the surface, The distance between the winding rope and the side of the shaft was 5 feet 4 inches, indicating a spark gap ;of this width, and an intensity of discharge which could not fail to ignite the explosive mixture of gas and air known to be present in the shaft.""The Compressed Air Magazine, January 1920 issue, which contained the above extract also goes on to state;""In 1915, M, Ferey described in a paper read before the Societe de l'Industrie Minerale phenomena of a similar character to the above. In a pit liable to sudden outbursts of gas, for the sake of safety, shot firing was carried out from the surface. During a storm, in the year 1905, shots went off in two places after the detonators had been connected to the conductors) we read in the Colliery Guardian, London. These shots were situated respectively 1,400 and 1,410 metres from the firing station, Realizing the possible danger from this cause, the precaution was taken to cut the conductors at the bottom of the shaft and to connect there just before firing, Even under these conditions a shot went off spontaneously, -.owing, it is believed, to lightning."""

Many inquiries are received by the United States Bureau of Mines for the names of elementary books on geology, mineralogy, methods of identifying minerals, prospecting, and similar subjects. In response to this demand the following brief bibliography has been prepared. As many of the inquiries are received from those who have limited technical knowledge of the subjects involved, the bibliography includes the simpler texts which present the subjects in nontechnical language. Other texts contain glossaries which define the technical terms used. A short note following the title indicates the character of each book, the number of pages, and the price. Thus, elementary mineralogists or geologists, prospectors, mineral collectors, nature students, or travellers may select the texts that best suit their requirements and their capabilities. To supply the needs of more advanced students, quite a number of the standard texts used in schools and colleges are included in a second group. A short list of books on economic geology and mineralogy has also been added.

The mine ventilation system consists of the fan, the roadways, and the regulatory devices. Sufficient fresh air must reach each working face in the mines to render harmless noxious, toxic, and respirable pollutants and to provide for the breathing of men. This is achieved by the proper selection of fan and regulatory devices. Because a mining system is dynamic, the mine ventilation system must also be dynamic. In short, mine ventilation engineers are frequently called upon to provide answers to the following questions: 1. Given a mine or the projected plan of a mine, what fan must be selected for the quantities specified in the section? At what point in its characteristic must it be operated? Are any speed changes or changes in blade settings warranted? 2. What should be the regulation in a section to insure cer¬tain desired quantity in that section? How does it affect the overall ventilation system? 3. What are the effects of driving a new shaft? Where should it be located? What size fan should be installed in the shaft? How does this affect the overall ventilation sys¬tem? 4. How much quantity increases can be obtained by cleaning up falls and streamlining roadways and by driving addi¬tional parallel airways? These questions are in no way exhaustive, nor are answers easy. Most of the operational and planning problems discussed above are to a cer¬tain extent solved by ventilation engineers using rules of thumb from experience. Both natural conditions and regulatory requirements have changed so drastically recently that use of scientific methods in ventilation planning and of faster methods in evaluating the plans is a must. "The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. These coals from two different mines of the New River district both caked considerably during burning, the nut and slack more than the other. Analyses of the coal were as follows:"

Reduce dust generated during bagging at minerals processing facilities, such as silica sand operations. Approach Installation of a new type of bag nozzle system eliminates the major dust sources during the bag filling process. How It Works The drawing illustrates components of the new bag nozzle system. The system differs in several ways from the conventional nozzle system. An improved bag clamp reduces the amount of blow-back during bag filling, because it has direct contact with approximately 80 per-cent of the nozzle. A two nozzle arrangement includes an inner or "fill" nozzle surrounded by another nozzle, which is designed to exhaust excess pressure from the bag after it has been filled. The exhaust is powered by an eductor, which uses a venturi effect to exhaust the bag at approximately 50 cfm. The exhaust exits into a bucket elevator and is recycled. A pinch valve automatically opens and closes the exhaust system to the bag.

Where possible , date of publication , publisher, current price , and number of pages are given, although prices are subject to change at intervals . The references are grouped under the following headings : minerals , gems , rocks , geology, geomorphology, engineering geology , prospecting, mining . engineering, microscopy, technical dictionaries , and miscellaneous . For ready reference, the authors ' names are arranged alphabetically under each grouping . This list is not comprehensive, but contains only those references in most common use and which are generally available in public college libraries .

This report describes the development of new electroplating baths from which tin-nickel alloy plate was deposited. Although tin-nickel plate can be deposited from an aqueous ammonium bifluoride bath, the corrosive nature of this bath has served as a deterrent to its use. The Bureau of Mines felt that more general acceptance of this new alloy plate would follow if neutral or alkaline baths could be developed. Promising results were obtained from electrolytes containing both tin and nickel chlorides dissolved in triethanolamine-hydrochloric acid or in ethylene glycol hydrochloric acid baths. Current efficiencies close to 100 percent were obtained with these baths. Research revealed that tin-nickel plate could be produced from organic solvents or from mixed aqueous-organic electrolytes. The composition of the alloy deposit - 65 percent tin and 35 percent nickel - was found to exhibit the same single-phase structure that is obtained from the commercially accepted fluoride-type bath.

Beginning in 1991, scientists at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory recorded interviews with individuals who are recognized as experts in mine emergency response. These 30 veterans related stories and observations from events experienced during as many as 47 years of response activities. Overall, the response veterans averaged 29 years of mine emergency response experience and 35 years of mining experience. Interviewees included representatives from mining companies, the United Mine Workers of America, and State and Federal agencies. Most of their comments dealt not so much with technical aspects of particular mine emergency responses, but rather the human side of more general topics, including preparedness, experience, people on-site, mine rescue teams, and decision-making. An analysis of their interviews provides an overview of lessons learned on-site at some of the largest mine disasters since the mid-1940s. This knowledge was gathered so that it could be provided to today's miners and to tomorrow's emergency response personnel. It is expected that the collective wisdom obtained can be used to help train new responders and guide those decisions that will have to be made on the scenes of future events.

"Coal mine dust research throughout the world has been stimulated by the recognition of its importance in the development of coal miners' diseases, particularly coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). A historical look at the problem and the present state of knowledge in this area of importance to the worldwide coal industry is presented. A summary of progress made in this area is provided and some research ideas for the future are discussed.1. INTRODUCTIONI thank Dr. Yong Won John, President of the Korean Institute of Mineral and Mining Engineers, for his invitation to address the International Symposium on Coal Mining and Safety. This presents me with an interesting opportunity to take a broad look at the research in coal mine dust and where we are going. From this broad perspective, we can all view the progress and problems that are apparent in the present state of knowledge of coal mine dust. One important element in the review of coal mine dust research and its role in miners' diseases is that of its history. The existence of diseases attributed to the mine atmosphere is often traced back to Pliny the younger in the first century A.D. His work on natural history mentioned observed human effects attributed to mine fumes and vapors. However, the subject of the effects of dust in the mine was not mentioned in published literature until 1556 when Agricola discussed the ailments of miners in his day (Seaton 1975).For many centuries, many medical ailments of the lungs were often categorized together and distinct diseases were often not recognized until more modern times. The ability to distinguish different lung diseases was limited until the discovery of X-rays in 1986. Nonetheless, Zenker in 1866 applied the term pneumonokoniosis to any disease where dust gathers in the lymphatic depots of the lungs. This term was changed to pneumoconiosis in 1932. While pneumoconiosis was defined in the 1800s, scant attention was paid to control of miners' diseases until recent decades. The first attempt to control disease through control of the mine atmosphere has been attributed to the South Africans who instituted a silica control in 1910 (Drinker and Hatch 1954)."

"Respirable high-silica particles from four coal mines. a clay mine and a tunnelling site were analysed for silicon vs aluminum composition by performing scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS) at electron accelerating voltages of 20 kiloelectron volts (keV). The same particles were analysed at 5 keV to determine possible differences in surface vs bulk composition. In some cases high-silica particles exhibited a decrease in the ratio of silicon to aluminium K-alpha line intensities with decreasing electron beam accelerating voltage. This behaviour is consistent with aluminosilicate surface contamination or occlusion of a silica particle. Some 20 high-silica particles were analysed from each of 10 samples. Powdered aluminosilicate glass was used as a control for the behaviour of silica with a homogeneous distribution of aluminium in the particle. Significant differences were found between the control and sample means for an Illinois bituminous coal mine dust, two western and one central Pennsylvania bituminous coal mine dust low-temperature ashes. and a clay mine and mill dust sample, but not for an anthracite coal mine dust and two central Pennsylvania bituminous coal mine dust low-temperature ashes. INTRODUCTIONRESPIRABLE dust quartz content commonly is measured on bulk samples by using i.r. spectroscopy or X-ray diffraction. For research purposes, individual particle-by particle SEM-EDS analysis at 20-30 keV electron beam accelerating potential may be used also. Such measurements have not provided an unambiguous association of quartz content with occupational pulmonary disease prevalence in exposed workers (WALTON et al., 1977). Rather, there is evidence that coal rank modifies the relationship between dust exposure and pneumoconiosis development (WAL TON et al., 1977; ROBOCK and BAUER, 1990; ATTFIELD and MORRING, in press). SEM-EDS analysis was performed to measure the silicon fraction, Si/(Si +Ai), at 20 and at 5 keV on high-silica particles to determine if some respirable quartz particles generated by mining exhibit heterogenous composition with depth (WALLACE et al., 1990), which might affect the bioavailability of the quartz surface."

"The petroleum refiners of the United States made rapid strides in fuel economy in 1928, when the calculated number of B. t. u. required to refine a barrel of crude petroleum was 637,000 as compared with 698,000 in 1927, a decline of 9 per cent. The major portion of this indicated increase in fuel efficiency was undoubtedly due to the gain in use of the pipe-still and the continuous process of refining as contrasted with the old batch method of distillation.,Almost without exception the new refineries are equipped with one or more pipe-stills, and many of the older plants are changing over to this type of equipment. The refineries of the Appalachian area are among the oldest and most conservative of the country, yet a number of them dismantled their old shell and cheese-box stills and installed pipe-stills in 1928.The more extensive use of the pipe-still was not the only way in which the refiners lowered their fuel requirements in 1928. The use of heat-exchangers, in which the heat from hot vapors to be condensed is used to heat the incoming cold oil, also increased in 1928, and in addition the refiners have kept abreast of the times in saving fuel through better insulation and improved burners.For the year 1928 the refiners burned as fuel the following: 46,400,000 barrels of-fuel oil; 3.362,000 short tons of coal; 114,950,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas; 77,313, 000,000 cubic feet of refinery or still gases; and 470,000 short tons of coke, in addition to a little electricity. This fuel was calculated to have produced a grand total of 582,156 billions of B. t. u., as compared with 578,784 billions B. t. u. in 1927.The total of 46,400,000 barrels of fuel oil burned represents an increase over 1927 of about 5,000,000 barrels, which made it about equal to the 1926 figure. Practically all of the refinery districts used more oil as fuel in 1928. The most important increase - over 2,000,000 barrels - occurred in the East Coast district, where greatly expanded throughput of foreign crude was instrumental in increasing fuel-oil production.The use of coal for fuel at refineries again registered a material decline, the total for 1928 of 3,362,000 short tons being 33 per cent below that of the previous year. The outstanding decrease in the use of coal in 1928 occurred in the East Coast district, where coal was probably replaced by oil. The use of coal for fuel at refineries in the States of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia declined materially in 1928; the substitute used in the majority of cases was oil burned in pipe-stills."

This paper describes mining and milling practices at the San Xavier mine of the Eagle- Picher Mining & Smelting Co. in Pima County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and the mine surface buildings are situated in sec . 11 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , in the Sierrita Mountains in Pima County , 20 miles south by southwest from Tucson via the San Xavier Mission and Twin Buttes road ( fig . 1). A well-maintained dirt road continues southward toward Twin Buttes for 4 miles and then branches off northeasterly for 5-1/2 miles to Sahuarita , where the concentrator of the Eagle - Picher Mining & Smelting Co. is situated on the west slope of the Santa Cruz River Valley . Tho mill is connected by a railroad branch to the main line of the Southorn Pacific Railroad between Tucson and Nogales . It is generally assumed that the San Xavier silver - lead deposits became known to the Jesuits and Spaniards in the early part of the eighteenth century . However , no extensive mining operations were conducted by the Jesuits in what is now Arizona before the middle of the eighteenth century . The completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad from Los Angeles to El Paso in 1881 marked the beginning of intense activity in mining throughout the southern part of the State . The San Xavier mine produced 6,000,000 pounds of lead , considerable zinc ( exact figures not available ) and $200,000 in silver from 1897 to 1918 . The Eagle- Picher Mining & Smolting Co. re- opened the San Xavier mine in 1943 and built a 175-ton concentrator at Sahuarita . The capacity of the plant was increased in 1944 to 500 tons in order to take in custom ore . The surface rocks at the San Xavier mine are , in great part , of sedimentary origin . Limestones of various ages comprise most of the exposed sedimentaries , some quartzites and shales also being present . The sedimentaries rest upon coarse - textured , intrusive , igneous rocks comprised mainly of granite and granodiorite . The San Xavier deposit is composed of galena , sphalerite , chalcopyrite , and pyrite . Generally the individual ore bodies are small , discontinuous , and occur as irregularly spaced shoots or lenses . The present mine workings extend horizontally a distance of 2,700 feet and vertically 900 feet . Owing to ground weight, all mine openings are timbered on the levels and all stopes are square- setted and waste -filled .
